Officers had been executing a search warrant at a house on Tuesday night when 33-year-old Robert Langlais and another suspect allegedly fled the scene by jumping on the roof. Body camera video released by Fall River Police shows the moment officers made the discovery after a dog walker saw Langlais jump into the chimney. Watch the video above. Detectives attempted to free him but firefighters were needed to assist in the rescue. "One male eluded capture by bounding from the roof and onto a parked vehicle. The other male, later identified as Robert Langlais, aged 33, invoked the essence of the seasonal icon and attempted to hide inside of a chimney," Fall River Police said. "Langlais quickly became stuck in the chimney and required the assistance of the very detectives he was previously fleeing from." He has since been arrested and charged with multiple offences including outstanding warrants and possession of drugs. No one wants to see any player take a vicious hit like the one that knocked Trevor Lawrence out of the game. It’s easy to agree on that point. Eliminating violent shots is the hard part. The NFL has instituted several rules to protect quarterbacks but football is a physical sport and players have to react instantly and make split-second decisions going at high speeds so injuries keep occurring. Lawrence was carted off the field in the first half of Jacksonville’s 23-20 loss to Houston on Sunday after Azeez Al-Shaair leveled the defenseless quarterback with a forearm to the facemask. The late hit put Lawrence in the fencing position — both fists clenched — and he stayed on the ground for several minutes, while a brawl ensued. Lawrence didn’t require hospitalization for his concussion but it’s unknown when he’ll return. “Thank you to everyone who has reached out/been praying for me,” Lawrence wrote on X. “I’m home and feeling better. Means a lot, thank you all.” Al-Shaair was ejected from the game and faces a fine and potential suspension after his latest unsportsmanlike penalty. The Texans’ linebacker was flagged and later fined $11,255 for a late hit out of bounds on Titans running back Tony Pollard last week. He was fined earlier this year after he punched Bears running back Roschon Johnson on the sideline in Week 2. That occurred during a scuffle that started after his hard shot on quarterback Caleb Williams near the sideline that wasn’t flagged. Al-Shaair once got away with grabbing Tom Brady by the throat on a pass rush in a game between the 49ers and Buccaneers. Outraged Jaguars players called Al-Shaair’s hit “dirty” and Texans coach DeMeco Ryans made it known he didn’t condone it. “It’s not what we’re coaching,” Ryans said. “Want to be smart in everything we do and not hurt the team, get a penalty there. Have to be smarter when the quarterback is going down. Unfortunate play. Not representative of who Azeez is. He’s a smart player, really great leader for us. We felt his presence not being there. His loss really affected us on the defensive side. Just not what we’re coaching. Didn’t want to see the melee and all the aftermath. That’s not what we’re about. Not representative of us. The NFL rulebook states: “A defender must pull up when a runner begins a feet-first slide.” But defensive players aren’t automatically penalized if they make contact with a sliding quarterback if they already committed and the contact is unavoidable. The rules state it’s a foul when “the defender makes forcible contact into the head or neck area of the runner with the helmet, shoulder, or forearm, or commits some other act that is unnecessary roughness.” Al-Shaair did that so he was penalized and will face other repercussions. Depending on how tight the vote turns out to be, electoral officials may not call the race for days — as happened in the contentious 2019 runoff that brought center-right President Luis Lacalle Pou to office and ended 15 years of rule by Uruguay’s left-leaning Broad Front. Uruguay's staid election has turned into a hard-fought race between Álvaro Delgado, the incumbent party’s candidate who won 27% in the first round of voting on Oct. 27, and Yamandú Orsi from the Broad Front, who took 44% of the vote in the first round. But other conservative parties that make up the government coalition — in particular, the Colorado Party — notched 20% of the vote collectively, enough to give Delgado an edge over his challenger. Congress ended up evenly split in the October vote. Most polls have shown a virtual tie between Delgado and Orsi, with nearly 10% of Uruguayan voters undecided even at this late stage. Twelve-year-old influencer Ryan Kaji , for example, earns US$30 million a year on YouTube leading one of the most popular children 's channels. His empire was built on toy unboxing. An influencer (child or adult) with more than 1 million followers can earn upwards of $20,000 for one sponsored post, while a person with under 100,000 followers on a social media platform may still earn as much as $4,000 for each sponsored post. But the rise of kidfluencers around the globe raises questions about the blurred lines between play and labor, independence and control, privacy, profit and online success. Our research examines these questions. By analyzing existing research to clearly identify the challenges faced by child toy unboxers , we can guide future researchers and governments to best support children who are living parts of their lives online. YouTube as a career goal A 2023 global survey of children aged between 8 and 12 found they were three times more likely to aspire to be a YouTuber (29%) than an astronaut (11%). Advertisers have taken note. Social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube collectively earned nearly $11 billion in advertising revenue in 2022 from United States-based users younger than 18. Toy unboxing has emerged as particularly popular, generating massive revenue and global audiences. These types of videos involved children who unbox, play and review toys. Unboxing videos became popular in the 2010s , with content creators unpacking products such as tech gadgets and fashion items. Toy unboxing is now one of the highest-earning genres on YouTube. Work, play or somewhere in between At first glance, unboxing videos seem to follow a simple entertainer-audience relationship. The kidfluencers emotionally engage with young viewers, who are then inspired to create their own toy wish lists. But behind the fun is a world of complexity often not obvious for young viewers (and sometimes older viewers too). These children are hired by companies—and managed by their parents—to promote toys and other products in a job-like arrangement. This has raised concerns about child exploitation, privacy risks and unethical work practices. But current child labor laws in New Zealand and elsewhere do not see child influencers as a type of "child worker." And it is difficult to do so. While kidfluencers seem to be genuinely playing with the sponsored toy, their content is managed by contracts with advertisers, and expectations set by their parents. Therefore it can't fully be labeled as "play." At the same time, calling these practices purely "labor" ignores the real excitement children feel when creating sponsored content. In 2020, the French government labeled kidfluencers a "gray zone"—where the child is not officially working, but nevertheless spends a significant amount of time making videos, or derives a significant level of income from them. Protecting children Another complexity is that some social media platforms require users to be over 13, yet some kidfluencers are toddlers , with parents creating and managing their accounts, including producing and posting their children's online content. While parents play a big role in managing their child's online presence, the child drives the toy sales, creating tension between parental control and a child's independence. And behind this all is the issue of money. A child's involvement—and success—is driven by the wants and needs of advertisers. This raises questions about how much of a say the child really has in terms of creating content. Privacy and online safety are two key issues facing the kidfluencer industry. The more content a child toy unboxer posts online, the more popular and profitable they can become. But at the same time, popularity brings very real risks. Young female unboxers—and female kidfluencers in general—have been targeted by online predators . To stay safe, some kidfluencers use fake names and don't share their location. But these strategies are not perfect . Current (and proposed) policies rarely balance protecting child stars with supporting their success in sponsored content. In recent years, however, France and individual states in the US have created laws to protect the kidfluencers' earnings. All governments should follow suit and create policies that recognize the challenges of the kidfluencer industry, and which support and protect the children involved.
