(AP) — New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito came out of his first start of the season with a sore throwing arm and his status for Thursday's game against the Cowboys in Dallas is uncertain. DeVito was not listed on Monday's injury report and coach Brian Daboll said he did not know about the injury to the quarterback's right arm until just before the team had a walkthrough practice on Tuesday. Daboll said he was hopeful DeVito would play, but he added that backup Drew Lock will get a couple of extra snaps in the short workout. “If Tommy is good, then Tommy will be the guy,” Daboll said. Having played on Sunday, the Giants (2-9) are prepping for the Cowboys (4-7) with walkthroughs. After the workout on Tuesday, DeVito said his whole body was still sore, even his neck. He planned to test his arm on Wednesday before the team headed to Dallas. “The plan is to play," DeVito said. “We’ll see how I feel tomorrow. Hopefully wake up feeling a little bit better after I get some more treatment today. Looking forward to tomorrow.” DeVito was given the starting job last week when Daboll benched Daniel Jones after five straight losses. Jones asked co-owner John Mara to cut him on Friday and the team released him so he could pursue other opportunities after he cleared waivers on Monday, which he did. DeVito was 21 of 31 for 189 yards in a 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was sacked four times and missed one play in the fourth quarter after being hit hard after making a throw. Lock said the uncertainty about playing is the life of a backup. He noted playing one play after DeVito was hurt in the fourth quarter was a first for him. “Always got to be ready,” he said. “No matter what the week, no matter what the situation is, just playing like you’re going to go in there and play. Critics view the move as further evidence of Northern Ireland still having to follow EU rules post-Brexit and being treated differently from the rest of the UK – a major source of contention to the unionist community. The paperwork, which will be free to apply for, includes a declaration that the owner will not travel onwards to Ireland or another EU country with their pet or assistance dog. Animals will have to be microchipped and have their own individual pet travel document, which will be valid for its lifetime. Northern Ireland residents returning after a stay in Great Britain with their pet or assistance dog will not need a travel document. The scheme is being introduced under the Windsor Framework, a revised deal for Northern Ireland’s post-Brexit trading arrangements aimed at tackling issues caused by the protocol. Raising her concerns in Parliament, Baroness Hoey, a Northern Irish Brexit supporter and former Labour MP, said: “These regulations are in effect about a new aspect of the Irish Sea border that has not had expression until this point because of the grace periods.” She added: “The experience of visiting Northern Ireland with your pet dog or cat, or even a ferret, will be made to feel like a visit to a foreign country. Lady Hoey went on: “This could spell the end of holiday trips for pet owners from GB to NI and then on to the Republic, when they want to explore both Northern Ireland and the Republic. “If they have a pet passport, they will have renounced their right to go to the Republic. That makes the border more of an obstruction than having border control posts on it, because at least in that eventuality, you could still cross over it.” Rejecting claims it was a result of the UK leaving the EU, she said: “The reality is that this is happening precisely because Northern Ireland has not got Brexit. “As we say repeatedly, it is still subject to EU rules and the EU could change the rules overnight.” Former DUP deputy leader Lord Dodds of Duncairn said: “Every one of the statutory instruments that come forward under the Windsor Framework must be properly debated, because these laws are being brought forward to implement what a foreign jurisdiction has decided should be the law of the United Kingdom. “In the 21st century, we should not accept colonial rule. We abolished it elsewhere. We believe it should not be tolerated for one second. People should have the democratic right to decide their laws for themselves, in their interests.” He added: “The ridiculous part about this debate is that we are having to debate European laws regulating the movement of pet animals owned by British citizens between one part of the United Kingdom and another. That is an outrage.” Lord Dodds went on: “As I said, there will be hundreds, thousands more of these regulations, in all areas, affecting the daily lives of people in Northern Ireland. They all add up to a grievous assault on Northern Ireland’s constitutional position.” But former leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick said: “I support the Windsor Framework because it is a necessary legal device to deal with the complexities that were presented to us in Ireland, north and south, on the issue of Brexit. “We need a pragmatic solution rather than choosing to have political contests and duels simply for the sake of them.” Introducing the regulations, environment minister Baroness Hayman of Ulloch said: “This scheme will simplify the requirements associated with moving pet dogs, cats and ferrets from Great Britain to Northern Ireland significantly. “It replaces single-use animal health certificates with a free-of-charge lifelong travel document and removes the need for costly pet health treatments. “Pet owners who travel frequently with their pets, or those who rely on the services of an assistance dog to travel independently, will benefit substantially from this change in approach.” However, she acknowledged the concerns raised by peers and promised to continue engagement with them.

Schlumberger Ltd. stock underperforms Thursday when compared to competitors despite daily gainsCanadiens captain Nick Suzuki admits it’s a little weird having a photo of his former teammate and captain Shea Weber looking down at him now from the wall of the team’s locker rooms at the Bell Centre and at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard. Weber’s photo was put up in the locker rooms “It looks good up there and we’ll probably see Carey’s soon,” Suzuki said after the Canadiens practised Thursday morning in Brossard, noting that Carey Price will probably join Weber in the Hall of Fame next year when he becomes eligible for induction. “It’s pretty cool that you have guys that you played with and now you get to see them in the Hall of Fame, which is pretty special.” Suzuki and Weber were teammates for two seasons before the new Hall of Famer’s career came to an end because of injuries after the Canadiens advanced to the 2021 Stanley Cup final before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Suzuki looked up to Weber and now Weber is looking down on Suzuki in the locker room. What’s the best advice Weber gave Suzuki when they were teammates? “Just little things,” said Suzuki, “Probably the biggest thing was me sitting over here watching him every day, how he handles himself. It’s nothing that really he said. I got to learn a ton off him just watching him every day of how he handles things and interacts with people in the rink.” Suzuki and several of Weber’s old Canadiens teammates — including Price, Brendan Gallagher, Cole Caufield, Joel Armia, Jake Evans, Josh Anderson, Jeff Petry, Ben Chiarot, Paul Byron and Karl Alzner — made the trip to Toronto for his induction ceremony. Suzuki was also able to have dinner with Weber and Anderson last Friday in Montreal before the former Canadiens captain was honoured the next night at the Bell Centre. “It felt like he was still my teammate,” Suzuki said. “It was nice to hang out with him. I got to see him a little bit in Toronto at the ceremony, but not too much one-on-one time. So it was nice to have dinner with him.” During the dinner, Weber made it clear to Suzuki he could call him any time he wants if he needs to talk. Weber knows what it’s like to be a young captain since he was given that role with the Nashville Predators a month shy of his 25th birthday. He was captain of the Predators for six years and won the NHL’s Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2016, “I said don’t be afraid to call or reach out,” Weber said when he met with the media last Saturday at the Bell Centre. “No pressure. Don’t feel like you have to. But I’m just here to listen, even if you want to vent for a half hour, you can just spit things at me.” Weber remembers feeling awkward at first as a young captain when talking to an older teammate who might be 10 years older with three kids. But he grew into the role, just like Suzuki is doing now. He leads the Canadiens in scoring with 7-12-19 totals in 19 games. “Probably the biggest thing I do is try to lead by example,” Suzuki said. “Day-to-day, during the games, in practice, just set the tone for intensity in the way I play. That’s how I’ve always tried to play and I think that’s my best leadership quality.” Despite having a 7-10-2 record and sitting in last place in the Atlantic Division, the Canadiens were only three points out of a wild-card playoff spot following Wednesday’s games. They will be looking to extend their winning streak to three games when the Vegas Golden Knights visit the Bell Centre Saturday The Canadiens had only one three-game winning streak last season and it came in late March. “I think we’ve learned a lot about ourselves,” Suzuki said with the Canadiens about to reach the quarter-mark of the season. “Been through a lot together over kind of a short period of time. The low that we went through has helped us move forward and we’ve gotten better from it. I think we’re in a pretty good spot right now playing really good hockey and just want to keep that going. ... It’s exciting. There’s a lot of us in our division that are within two points of each other.” As the season moves on, Suzuki said he won’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call Weber if needed. “I’ll definitely take advantage of it,” he said about Weber’s offer. “He’s been through everything as a player and it’s definitely a really easy call to make and he’s always there for me.”
