Purdue athletic director Mike Bobinski promised to give new coach Barry Odom everything he needed to revive the Boilermakers program. Increasing the NIL budget is a solid start. Odom knows what's coming next — the questions. So naturally, it didn't take long for the former UNLV coach to be asked one thing he's likely to hear frequently on the recruiting trail: Could he explain the payment dispute that led to the departure of his starting quarterback, Matthew Sluka, after just three games this season? “I think every story, you look at what you're able to say, what's the truth, what's the reality and what's fabricated,” Odom said Tuesday at his introductory news conference. “I think you look at that very specific instance there was very open communication from the day the recruiting process started. Everything we did as a staff, as a university, as an athletic department was by the book and by the law.” Sluka transferred from Holy Cross to UNLV after twice being selected as a Walter Payton Award finalist. The award goes to the best player in the Football Championship Series. He didn't last long in Las Vegas. Sluka entered the transfer portal after winning all three starts, claiming he never received a promised $100,000 NIL payment. Odom issued a statement at the time saying the program abided by the “applicable rules.” On Tuesday, he seemed to acknowledge that part of the explanation was a continuing quarterback competition between Sluka and Hajj Malik-Williams, who took over as the starter and led UNLV (10-3) to its best record in 40 years and a second straight Mountain West Conference championship game appearance. Malik-Williams was a second-team all-conference selection. Odom likely will need more detailed answers for prospective recruits if he intends to make the Boilermakers competitive again in a Big Ten with four playoff-bound teams. Odom does have some advantages at Purdue — a strong alumni base led by former NFL star Drew Brees, a recently renovated stadium, other upgraded facilities and the school's longtime reputation as the “Cradle of Quarterbacks.” The biggest advantage, though, will be Purdue going all in on NIL money. “We’re going to operate at the full cap," Bobinski said. “We’re going to be as resourced as anybody in the country, allowing Barry and his staff the ability to go out there and be eyeball to eyeball with everybody we’re competing for, a transfer or from a high school recruiting perspective.” Bobinski said Odom's results at UNLV were the primary attraction, though. As the Boilermakers continued to struggle in November, Bobinski started studying the revival of a UNLV program that had struggled for decades. What he found was that the man Missouri fired in 2019 after posting a 25-25 record in four seasons had earned a second chance with a Power Four program. “What was accomplished at UNLV these last couple years was nothing short of remarkable,” Bobinski said. “What that shows me is Coach Odom brings a very unique combination of an old-school, traditional football toughness and mindset with ability to operate and adapt to today’s college football environment.” It's a combination Purdue desperately needs following an embarrassing 2024 season in which it went 1-11 (0-9 Big Ten) and suffered the two most lopsided losses in school history — 66-7 to Notre Dame and 66-0 to Indiana. He takes over a team that lost its final 11 games and did not beat an FBS opponent. Navigating the path back in what's likely to be the first year of revenue sharing and NIL caps tied to roster limits could be even trickier given what he's facing. The state's other two most prominent programs — No. 3 Notre Dame (11-1, No. 5 CFP) and No. 9 Indiana (11-1, No. 8 CFP), will meet in a first-round playoff game on Dec. 20. There are other complications, too. Purdue signed only six recruits on the first day of the early signing period and has 21 players currently in the transfer portal, including All-American safety Dillon Thieneman, starting linebacker Yanni Karlaftis, starting tight end Max Klare and two quarterbacks. “We've got to be great evaluators, and then you've got to build an offense or a defense and a kicking game around the strengths of our players,” Odom said. “And then we've got to be great teachers at making them and teaching them, understanding the reasons we're calling the play and how important their job is to get that job done.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Published 4:20 pm Tuesday, December 10, 2024 By Sabrina Simms Robertson NATCHEZ — A long-time, well-known educator in Natchez passed away in late November at the age of 81. Bettie Minor was an educator for nearly 40 years in Natchez beginning in 1964, according to her daughter, Vermelle Minor. A native of Hazelhurst, Bettie Minor’s influence to become a teacher began during her childhood teaching her younger siblings, Vermelle said. “She was the third of 10 children and the oldest daughter,” she said. Compounding health issues made Bettie Minor move to Dallas, Texas closer to her daughter, but since she started her career as a Social Studies teacher at Sadie V. Thompson High School in 1964, Natchez has been her home, Vermelle said. She later taught at North Natchez, South Natchez, and Natchez High School. “After she retired in 2003, she still worked at the Natchez Children’s Home as a tutor,” Vermelle said. “She cared deeply and wanted to give back to the community.” Bettie Minor was an active member of her community, contributing to various organizations and causes. She worked with the NAACP and the Democratic Women of Adams County, served as Secretary for the Adams County Democratic Committee, and was a past president of the Adams County Teachers’ Association. As a member of the Emma Morris Chapter No. 12 Order of the Eastern Star for 54 years, Bettie Minor was instrumental as an instructor, mentor and “connoisseur in helping others move forward,” Minor said. As a mom, Vermelle described Bettie Minor as stern but loving. “She saw the best in you and the potential of what you could do and pushed you to be your best,” she said. “Now that (my siblings and I) are older, it’s an innate part of our personalities to communicate well with others, get things done and be persistent and consistent in everything we do because of her.” Bettie and her husband Robert Lee Minor Sr. had two children, Vermelle and Marco. Bettie Minor also embraced the role of mother to Maurice Minor, the late Minnie Minor, Robert Lee Minor Jr., and Carl Elijah Minor. Before the years of computer-generated tests, Vermelle recalled her mother spending hours at home writing out her tests by hand and grading them afterward. Her other hobbies were gardening, fishing and watching football and basketball games. She always pulled for the underdog, said her son Marco. “She did like Brady and Mahomes until they started winning all of the time. She always said, ‘You’ve had your turn, now let the next person get the ball and move on.’ That’s the teacher in her,” he said. Bettie Minor’s first-time bass fishing, “She caught one that got off the hook. Moments later, if she didn’t pull that same fish out of the water,” Vermelle said. “Ever since she always loved fishing with dad. He would say he didn’t get to fish. He would just sit there and bate the poles over and over and she would keep pulling the fish in.” Marco added their mother loved helping people and wasn’t afraid to admit when she was wrong or when one of her children was wrong. “She believed in doing the right thing by people,” he said. “She also never met a stranger. If she saw someone in the room, she didn’t know she would say, ‘Come on over and talk to me. I don’t think I’ve met you yet.’ She would bring you in.” Besides dedicating her life to being an educator, mentor, mother and serving her community, Bettie Minor also was a devout Christian woman and active member of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church since 1970, where she served as Secretary, Chaplain of the Senior Choir, and President of the Beulah Clubs. She also served as Recording Secretary for the Women’s Auxiliary of Adams County and on the Memorial and Praise Committee. Bettie sang with the Gospel Choir, the Voices of Hope, where she was the Financial Secretary for the Voices of Hope, and participated annually in the Fall Pilgrimage. Vermelle said Bettie Minor is sorely missed. “You don’t find many like her. It’s hard to lose a gem like she was. Her light shines bright, even when she is gone,” she said.

(AP) — The New York Giants organization got exactly what it deserved in getting blown out by Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Giants were embarrassed in Sunday's 30-7 loss , taunted by Mayfield after a touchdown run just before halftime. And then they saw their fans walk out on them again when the Bucs extended their lead to 30-0 and sent New York (2-9) to its sixth straight loss. The losing streak is the longest for the Giants since 2019, when they dropped a franchise-record nine straight games to finish 4-12. That led to the firing of coach Pat Shurmur after two seasons. Third-year coach Brian Daboll is clearly in trouble, with the Giants guaranteed a second straight losing season. They were 6-11 in a 2023 season that featured a lot of injuries. Daboll, who denies he has lost the team, isn't the only one whose job is in jeopardy. General manager Joe Schoen is on the hot seat and so is this entire franchise, which is celebrating its 100th year. It's one thing to lose. It's quite another to give up, and that's what the organization did when it decided to bench Daniel Jones a week ago and then release him on Friday after the 27-year-old asked co-owner John Mara to let him walk away. While he wasn't playing well, Jones was the Giants' best quarterback. He gave them more a of chance to win than either Tommy DeVito or Drew Lock. Removing him from the picture was all but certain to make the Giants worse, even if it was a good business decision. If Jones was hurt and unable the pass his physical before the 2025 season, the team would have been on the hook for a $23 million cap hit. The problem is the players care about now. By getting rid of Jones and elevating DeVito to the starting role, the front office was telling the team it didn't care about winning with seven games left in the season. So the players gave a lackluster effort. Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence called the team soft. Rookie receiver Malik Nabers said he was sick of losing. Left tackle Jermaine Eluemunor said he saw a lack of effort by some players. What they all were saying was they were angry at being betrayed. Money is never more important than winning, and the Giants made that mistake. At this point in the season? Nothing. The offense once again. The Giants have scored a league-low 163 points, including only 60 in six games at MetLife Stadium, where they are winless this season. They have scored in double figures at home twice. Daboll's team has been held scoreless in the first half in three of 11 games and it has been held without a first-half touchdown seven times. Daboll said he will continue to call the offensive plays. S Tyler Nubin. The rookie has had a team-high 12 tackles in each of the last two games. His 81 tackles for the season are just two behind team leader Bobby Okereke. RB Tyrone Tracy. The rookie leads Giants running backs with 587 yards on 116 carries — a 5.1-yard average for the fifth-round pick. But holding onto the ball has been a big issue. Tracy's fumble in overtime cost New York a chance to win in Germany against Carolina. He also lost the ball in the third quarter at the Bucs 5-yard line with New York down 23-0. It earned him a seat on the bench. LT Jermaine Eluemunor (quad) and OLB Azeez Ojulari (toe) left Sunday's game in the first quarter. Chris Hubbard filled in at tackle and the Giants luckily got back DL Kayvon Thibodeaux this past week after he missed five games with a broken wrist. DeVito was banged up but Daboll expects him to start against the Cowboys. 10 — The Giants have gone 10 consecutive games without an interception, tying the NFL record held by the 1976-77 San Francisco 49ers and the 2017 Oakland — now Las Vegas — Raiders. Also, it appears more people say off-leash dogs are a problem. That's according to surveys conducted of Missoula residents in 2018 and 2024, asking their opinions on a variety of topics related to public spaces managed by the Missoula Parks and Recreation Department. The 2024 survey was conducted by the University of Montana's Bureau of Business and Economic Research. It was statistically valid, meaning it represents an accurate slice of the city's adult demographics. The survey was presented to the city's parks and recreation board on Tuesday morning. "Safety, we assumed that was a growing issue for our community, largely because of phone calls and emails," said city Parks and Recreation Director Donna Gaukler, when asked if she was surprised by any of the findings. Gaukler said there's a difference between "real safety" and "perceived safety." She said that the city needs to work hard on addressing "real safety," as in making sure park facilities meet safety codes and addressing crime prevention through environmental design. She said the city also needs to work to address "perceived safety" by increasing education and awareness. "We need to do a better job of communicating how to be safe," Gaukler said. Bonner Park is a popular spot for pickup grass volleyball in Missoula. Most respondents, about 91%, said the city's top priority should be ensuring that parks, trails, open spaces and facilities are safe. Zac Covington, the city's open space program manager, was the city staffer who presented the report to the board. He noted that in 2018, the word "homeless" was not one of the top 50 words used by survey respondents. However, in 2024, the word "homeless" was one of the top four or five words that came up when they tallied all the words used by respondents. When asked what things they would emphasize to city staff, about 13% of respondents wrote down challenges or perceptions about homeless individuals. A trailhead sign on Waterworks Hill north of Missoula encourages hikers to leash their dogs and even provides leashes for those who don't have one. Dog owners can still take their pets off leash in the open space. Covington also said they compared the feelings of Missoula residents in 2024 to a national survey conducted by the National Parks and Recreation Association in 2023. About 27% of Missoula residents say they don't feel safe at a park, trail, open space or recreational facility, compared to 21% who feel the same way in the U.S. overall. Missoula residents are more likely to say they don't know about available parks and recreation programs and that the programs were too expensive. However, Missoula residents are less likely to say that parks and open space are too far from their house. About 15% of respondents said maintenance or cleanliness improvements were needed at a park, trail, open space or facility. "We need to get better at keeping parks really clean, which is hard with limited resources," Gaukler said. In 2018, about 18% of respondents said dogs off-leash were a problem. By 2024, that number had increased to about 33% of respondents. "What hasn't changed is challenges around dogs," Gaukler said. "Or I should say, dog owners managing their pets in parks and open spaces. That hasn't changed." More people in 2024 also said they found a lack of access to a restroom to be a problem. Covington said that 45% of respondents who have children said that programs offered by the Parks and Recreation Department were too expensive. At the same meeting, the board heard a presentation about how the city will be increasing fees for Parks and Recreation facility rentals. Ryan Applegate, the deputy director of programs and fiscal services for the Parks and Recreation Department, said fees will generally increase 5% to help offset increased costs. "A benefit of fees is the increased ability to serve more residents by providing a revenue stream," he said. "Fees allow increased value or quality of services." He said fees also reduce conflict by allowing users to reserve facilities, which means two different groups don't show up to use the same space at the same time. The fee increases are necessary to keep up with inflation, Applegate explained. Wages and the general cost of business have increased over the last few years, he said. The city conducted a survey of fees in other Montana cities and found that Missoula is on par with other Montana cities in terms of field rental fees and aquatic facility use fees. Tennis facility rental fees will increase 20% to offset the need to replace and maintain those courts, he said. The full survey results about Missoula's parks, trails, open spaces and facilities can be found online by finding this story online and visiting Pub-missoula.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=317361 . The operation brought the Palestinian cause back to the forefront of media coverage and became a key topic of discussion in elite circles. Although the "two-state solution" remains a distant prospect, it has gained renewed public support in the West as a potential resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In a recent article for The Hill, Mark Toth and Jonathan Sweet argue that "Iran's nuclear phoenix may yet rise from the ashes of Gaza, Lebanon, Syria." However, their argument is unsupported by the facts on the ground. The authors' suggestion that Iran has been completely defeated by Israel in the region is inaccurate. Since October 2023, Israel has targeted Hezbollah facilities and fighters across Lebanon, without significant success. Hezbollah operations continued in northern occupied Palestine and even into Haifa and Tel Aviv until a ceasefire took effect last month. Israel's operations in southern Lebanon failed to gain significant territory, and Hezbollah successfully repelled those attacks. The Lebanon ceasefire, largely mirroring UN Resolution 1701, offers no substantial changes. Hezbollah retains its weaponry and maintains its capacity to resume operations against Israel at any time. In Gaza, Israel appears to lack a clear plan, and occupying the territory and building settlements is not a viable option due to several factors, including international pressure. The Israeli Prime Minister has actively blocked ceasefire efforts, a move viewed by many as an attempt to evade legal challenges he faces. Furthermore, installing the Palestinian Authority as Gaza's governing body is impractical; the PA lacks popular support and is unlikely to govern effectively without Hamas's cooperation. While the fall of the Assad government in Syria was undoubtedly a setback for the Resistance Axis, it was not catastrophic. The Axis was not solely dependent on Syria; Hezbollah was a significant force long before Damascus became a logistical hub, and Ansarullah in Yemen demonstrates the viability of independent resistance movements. The country has been under siege by the Saudi-led coalition, however, it managed to foil attempts to overthrow the government in Sana’a. Yemenis have been launching attacks in the Red Sea and surrounding waters against U.S.-Israeli interests. It has also launched missiles and drones on occupied Palestine successfully despite being constantly under attack by a U.S.-led coalition. Toth and Sweet suggest Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons; however, Tehran's continued cooperation with the IAEA and adherence to the NPT render these comments irrelevant. Iran's actions were reactive measures taken in response to escalations against the country. The U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA initiated Tehran's retaliatory measures, which included a gradual increase in uranium enrichment. Moreover, even if Israel could destroy Iranian nuclear sites, such an attack would eliminate any basis for negotiations and leave Iran's existing expertise intact. Furthermore, such an operation might trigger further escalation, potentially including attacks on U.S. military sites in the region. The authors criticize the previous U.S. administration for its perceived leniency toward Iran and praise Israel's decision to launch large-scale attacks on Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria, despite the significant loss of life. They claim Iran received $10 billion due to sanctions relief; however, the fact is that the Trump administration's "maximum pressure" policy, continued under Biden, proved ineffective. Biden's administration attempted to pressure Iran back to the negotiating table, but these efforts have so far failed. Toth and Sweet defend Israeli actions in West Asia and portray Iran negatively; however, the reality on the ground is far different. The Israeli war on Gaza has resulted in over 45,000 Palestinian deaths, mostly women and children, over 107,000 injuries, and thousands unaccounted for. A similar situation, though less severe, occurred in Lebanon and cannot be described as "self-defense." Israel has also repeatedly attacked Syrian infrastructure since the fall of the government and occupies parts of Syria, seemingly intending a permanent presence, in violation of the 1974 disengagement agreement. Iran’s ties with Russia and China have been growing throughout recent years yet, it can’t be called a “strategic partnership” due to several factors. Iran and Russia share interests on several issues. For example, while their ultimate goals differ, their presence in Syria and the fight against terrorism represent a shared objective. Moscow sought to maintain air and naval bases, while Iran aimed to protect Shia holy shrines and establish a new supply route to Hezbollah in Lebanon. Despite the article's claims, these factors do not indicate Russia's willingness to provide Iran with nuclear detonation technology. Moscow has historically been cautious about Iran's nuclear program, even supporting anti-Iran resolutions in the UN Security Council and elsewhere. Similarly, China's economic interests in West Asia facilitated the normalization of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
