( MENAFN - Gulf Times) Mercedes driver George Russell was agonisingly close to claiming pole position at Qatar Grand Prix, but he explained that he is more than ready to battle back past pole-sitter Max Verstappen and get stuck into a multi-team fight for the win. The Briton continued his magnificent run of form that has characterised his last few races, lining up for his fourth consecutive front-row start in tomorrow's race around the Lusail International Circuit. After taking provisional pole, he was pipped to the top spot by just 0.055s following Verstappen's final flying lap – but the tight result, coupled with his P3 finish in the Sprint, has left Russell optimistic that he can target victory. He also explained that Mercedes couldn't“have dreamt of” their resurgence to be repeatedly in the mix at the front of the field after they experienced a clear slump in performance after the summer break. “Feeling in such a groove at the moment, feeling really great,” Russell said after qualifying.“My first lap was one of the best I've ever done, and then for whatever reason just couldn't find that extra bit of time on the last lap and Max pipped me.“Just taking the positives – the car's been so great the last two weekends and just enjoying it while we can.” Four teams could have a shot at the win around the high-speed, physically demanding track as Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari have been virtually inseparable at points across the weekend's sessions. It was McLaren who led the pack in the Sprint, with Lando Norris handing Piastri the win out of the final corner, after Russell found himself unable to overtake the Australian having lost P2 on the first lap, but he consistently stayed close to both papaya cars. He added:“Hopefully we can have a proper race rather than this team orders stuff! It's going to be a good race. I think we'll all be going for it. It's actually great that Max is in the mix as well – I was really surprised at their turnaround because they looked really off the pace yesterday, off the pace this morning. Obviously they were both in Q3 and Max on pole so I think we've got a good race on our hands.” I know I've still got it, says 'slow' Hamilton Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton said he knew he had 'still got it' despite qualifying sixth and nearly half a second slower than Mercedes teammate George Russell for today's Qatar Grand Prix. The seven-times Formula One world champion, who will be 40 next year when he moves to Ferrari, had said after qualifying seventh for the sprint at Lusail on Friday that he was“definitely not fast any more”. He repeated that verdict to reporters after the main qualifying session, with Russell on the front row, but in a slightly more positive way.“I know I've still got it,” he said.“It's just the car won't go any faster, I definitely know I've got it. It's not a question in my mind. Looking forward to the end (of the season).” The most successful driver in the history of the sport with a record 105 wins has triumphed twice this season but Russell, second on the grid in Qatar behind four-times champion Max Verstappen, has out-qualified him 18-5.“I'm slow,” said Hamilton.“About half a second off my team-mate in the same car.“It's been all year,” he added, saying he did not know why that was. “It's not possible to change it right now.” The season ends in Abu Dhabi on Dec 8, with Hamilton contracted to Mercedes until the end of the year and facing sponsor commitments before he can start at Ferrari next season. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. More than 30 crew members of Thai fishing boats were detained in Myanmar waters on Saturday after three Myanmar patrol vessels opened fire on them, leaving one person dead and two injured, a navy commander said. Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakul, a commander in the 3rd Naval Area, said that one Thai fisherman drowned and “31 people were taken into Myanmar”, without specifying who had detained them. Some media reports said there were two fatalities but this could not be confirmed. Vice Adm Suwat said several Thai fishing boats were operating in Myanmar waters off Ranong province at the time of the incident. The man who is thought to have drowned “jumped into the water during the attack,” he said. Vice Adm Suwat said he had instructed local authorities to negotiate with their Myanmar counterparts to secure the release of the fishermen. He added the 31 crew — four Thais and 27 Burmese — were believed to have been taken to Yan Cheuk Island in Myanmar. Thai fishing boats have often defied warnings from Myanmar and continued to operate in Myanmar waters, which have more fish stocks than Thai waters, he said. The Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre said that about 50 Thai boats were fishing around 20 kilometres west of Koh Phayam when they were approached by three Myanmar patrol vessels, which opened fire on them. The attack prompted the fishermen to escape by cutting their nets and revving their engines, heading towards Koh Phayam where they were rescued by a Thai patrol boat stationed near the island. However, two Thai fishing boats were taken by the Myanmar vessels and subsequently towed into Myanmar waters. Crew members abandoned their vessels, jumping into the sea, and one of them drowned. The others were rescued by other Thai fishing vessels. Two crew members from another Thai fishing boat sustained injuries — one from gunfire from the Myanmar vessels and the other from an electric shock. The injured were taken to a hospital in Ranong. Nikorndej Balankura, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the navy is trying to contact its Myanmar counterpart to hold talks to secure the release of the fishermen. The Thai-Myanmar Maritime Border Fisheries Coordination Centre is also working with the Thai-Myanmar Local Border Committee to resolve the situation. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has also instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Thai embassy in Myanmar to work with Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist the detained crew members, said Mr Nikorndej. Ms Paetongtarn has also told state agencies to investigate whether international laws were broken during the incident, and whether overly heavy-handed action was taken against the fishermen on the Thai boats. Adm Jirapol Wongwit, the navy commander, said it was exploring every possible channel to help the detained Thai crew members. The Department of Fisheries also issued a warning urging all operators and vessel owners to be cautious when navigating near the maritime border. Thailand and Myanmar share approximately 2,400 kilometres of land and maritime borders, including in the Andaman Sea. According to a notice on the department’s website, some Thai fishing boats have been illegally operating in Myanmar waters, raising tensions between the neighbours.Senatorial candidate Luis “Manong Chavit” Singson underscored the importance of strengthening the nation’s reservist forces in his address during the RRU Mustering for the 4th Quarter CY 2024, held at Camp Riego de Dios in Tanza, Cavite on Saturday. “We must ensure that more Filipinos are encouraged to join the reserves and serve our country. This is key to building a strong and resilient defense,” said Singson, who is No. 58 in the Senate ballot. Manong Chavit also vowed to provide state-of-the-art military equipment, drawing on his experience as a global defense contractor. “I will continue to deliver the best military technology to fortify our nation’s defense capabilities,” he assured the crowd. The event featured the ribbon-cutting and blessing of key facilities, including the High-Velocity Deployment transport services, PAARU facilities, and the Laang Kawal Integrated Farm. It was attended by top military officials, reservists, and local supporters. Major Artemio Aloseda, director of the 402nd Ready Reserve Unit, praised Singson for his steadfast dedication to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), particularly the Army. “Chavit’s understanding of the AFP, honed during his tenure as chief of police, is unparalleled. His support for our armed forces is steadfast and genuine,” Major Aloseda said. The event highlighted Singson’s senatorial campaign focus on national security, emphasizing both military readiness and grassroots empowerment. His support for initiatives like the Laang Kawal Integrated Farm, which promotes sustainable agriculture and self-reliance, showcased his vision of a prepared, self-sufficient nation. The RRU Mustering event also allowed attendees to witness the operational readiness of the reserve unit, fostering camaraderie and national pride among the participants.UBA SANI AND ICT-DRIVEN KNOWLEDGE
