Michigan , but it wasn't enough to save the job of offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell. The , which also included quarterbacks coach. Tight ends coach Steve Casula will become the interim offensive coordinator for bowl season. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore's comment, via the program: "After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction," said Moore. "This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan Football and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors." It was a challenging year for Michigan in its first season under Moore, who took over for Jim Harbaugh full-time after a breakthrough national championship. Moore filled his old offensive coordinator position with Campbell, who was previously the program's quarterbacks coach in 2023 and an offensive analyst in 2022. Before Michigan, Campbell's play-calling experience consisted of stints at Old Dominion and Division II Alderson Broaddus. The offensive results weren't pretty for Michigan, which also saw seven offensive players get selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, including quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum and wide receiver Roman Wilson. The Wolverines ranked 117th in the country in yards per play — after ranking 24th last season — and didn't score more than 17 points in any of its six games against ranked opponents. Those struggles didn't prevent Michigan from , though the numbers from that game normally wouldn't be an argument for keeping Campbell. Quarterback Davis Warren was 9-for-16 for 62 passing yards and two interceptions, while the run game averaged 4.2 yards on 41 attempts. Before its game-winning field goal, Michigan had scored all of its points on drives of three yards or less. Its touchdown came after an interception deep in Buckeyes territory, while the first field goal was the product of a weak punt and a three-and-out. As for what Michigan will do going forward, it at least has plenty to offer the next offensive coordinator. Thanks to a donation from tech billionaire Larry Ellison, the program was able to . The man charged in the killing of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare reported in online writings over a period of years that he had been navigating a series of life-altering health problems. In posts on a Reddit account, the man, Luigi Mangione , said back pain that had once been a minor issue in his life grew more extreme in 2022 after he went surfing, then grew worse again a few weeks later when he slipped on a piece of paper. He reported persistent problems, including pain when he sat down, twitching leg muscles, and numbness in his groin and bladder. Credit: AP He shared details that friends have corroborated, writing that he had a spinal fusion surgery in July 2023. He wrote that within days he did not need pain meds and could sit, stand and walk just fine. “The surgery wasn’t nearly as scary as I made it out to be in my head, and I knew it was the right decision within a week,” he wrote in one Reddit post. He went on to encourage others to consider such surgery, pointing to athletes who had done so. An X-ray that he posted on another social media account showed a spinal fusion. The back pain was not his only struggle. He wrote at times about “brain fog” that had worsened during his college years, making studying more difficult. Doctors could not seem to figure out what was happening, he reported. “It’s absolutely brutal to have such a life-halting issue,” he wrote. He also posted on a page for people dealing with irritable bowel syndrome, saying that he had undergone some testing for the condition. He said the testing had been covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield — his only reference in the Reddit writings to insurance coverage. After the back surgery, he returned to Hawaii, where he had previously been living, but by the spring of this year, he had ceased communications with most friends and family members. His family reached out to his friends in recent months in hopes of finding him. Arraignment photo of Luigi Mangione, a suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Credit: AP The suspect’s comment history on Reddit gives other clues to his personal life and pursuits. He was an active commenter in the OneBag subreddit, a community that “promotes urban travel with the philosophy of carrying less” and focuses on different types of backpacks and travel gear. Photos released by the New York Police Department of the assailant in the UnitedHealthcare shooting showed what its maker identified as a backpack by Peak Design, a brand that was widely discussed in the OneBag subreddit. The suspect also posted to the Magfest subreddit, a community dedicated to a gaming subculture and festival held annually in Maryland, where he grew up. Sarah Nehemiah, a friend during his time in Hawaii, described him as an avid gamer and Pokémon enthusiast. He posted enthusiastically to the Pokémon Go subreddit, a forum dedicated to the popular mobile augmented reality game in which users catch virtual Pokémon using their mobile phones. Police have charged Luigi Mangione with the murder of Brian Thompson. Credit: Facebook Gaming has long been a part of the suspect’s life. He spent much of his childhood creating games and later went into the tech and gaming industry, working as an intern at the company that created the enormously popular Civilization game franchise. The Reddit account has since been deleted by the company, but archived versions of the posts were reviewed by The New York Times . A Reddit spokesperson said its policy was to suspend accounts that may potentially be related to suspects in high-profile criminal investigations. We have witnessed a volatile November as markets keep moving from bullish and bearish phases. What is your call on markets? November has indeed been a volatile month for the Indian markets, driven by factors like rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Presidential elections in the US and Legislative Assembly elections in Maharashtra, together leading to significant FII outflows. We saw valuations neutralising, with NIFTY’s PE ratio dropping from a high of 24.4x in late September to ~21.5x in mid-November. However, we have observed a notable recovery in the markets since mid-November, fuelled by positive developments such as the Central Government’s landslide victory in Maharashtra and Donald Trump’s win in the US. Although these factors have injected a sense of optimism into the markets, we still see valuations being stretched in certain pockets and hence expect the markets to witness volatility and remain sideways over the short term. Over the long term, we strongly believe that the India story is going to play out very well with aggressive reforms expected to be pushed through by the government. This, coupled with India’s strategic positioning in the geo-political landscape are expected to be strong catalysts for growth Market might be down by about 8-10% from the highs in terms of benchmark levels. But are you getting any bargain buys at current levels? In November, the NIFTY dropped sharply to ~23,000 levels but has since shown signs of recovery, finding strong support around 23,200 levels. The index sharply recovered, gaining more than 1,000 points in just 3 trading sessions. The recovery was likely fuelled by the Central Government’s victory in Maharashtra. While most indices have rebounded alongside this recovery, the NIFTY FMCG index remains below its September highs of ~ 66,000. The FMCG pack saw steep declines due to muted Q2FY25 results and worries surrounding declining rural demand. Most of the stocks in this pack are down 20%+ from their 52-week highs. We expect the pent-up demand to rebound in Q3-Q4FY25. Marquee FMCG names are available at attractive levels and present a case for a bargain buy. Trump pledges 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and deeper tariffs on China. Do you see any impact for India Inc.? President Trump’s recent announcement of a 25% tariff on Mexican and Canadian imports, along with an additional 10% on Chinese imports, is a significant move under his "America First" policy. Historically, while India has exported ~18% of its merchandise to the US, President Trump has criticized India for its high import tariffs. In the short to medium term, the tariffs imposed will present an opportunity for Indian businesses to plug the gaps left by Mexican, Canadian and Chinese products in the U.S. However, given Trump’s focus on reciprocal trade policies, there is a possibility that India could face similar tariffs in the future. Given India’s strategic positioning in the geo-political landscape, we expect limited tariffs to be imposed and corresponding impact only on limited sectors Is there any beaten-down theme that is now attractive as the risk-to-reward ratio is more comfortable? As discussed in the 2nd question, we believe the FMCG sector stands out as an attractive investment opportunity, offering a favourable risk-to-reward ratio for investors. The NIFTY FMCG index’s PE multiple has corrected more than 20% from its highs in September end. Most of the stocks in this space are down 20%+ from their 52-week highs and are trading at good support zones. We expect pent-up demand to rebound in Q3-Q4FY25. Current levels present investors with a good risk-to-reward ratio and may offer a strategic entry point for those looking towards long term gains. What are the queries that you get from NRI clients? In light of the volatility in the equity markets, our NRI clients have raised some concerns about the near to medium term outlook for Indian assets in their portfolio. Further, their primary focus has been two-fold: Understanding whether and how they should reallocate their portfolios between debt and equity in the Indian markets to align with the changing market dynamics. The impact of rupee depreciation on their investments. With rupee depreciating briskly, import led companies are facing earnings pressure and corresponding impact on stock prices. To tackle this, India has to become more competitive on the current account and more confident on the local economy. Further, this has to be backed with exponential increase in defence spends to become a global power. These factors coupled could enable India to aspire for a reserve currency status for the rupee, the advantages of which the US has been reaping for years There is too much chatter about FIIs taking out money, but they have been consistent buyers in debt. How do you think investors should read this? FIIs have been net sellers in the equity markets since the beginning of October, selling (net) an average of ₹3,800 crore per day, aggregating to net sales of ~1 lakh crore. However, they have been consistent net buyers in the debt markets with average net purchase of ~10k crore over the last 5-6 months. We believe, the factors behind this are instruments are offering good yields and rate cuts just around the corner. This should instil confidence among the investor community to look at portfolio diversification opportunities. In light of a strong dollar and its global repercussions, how do you see currency movements affecting Indian investments? The dollar index has seen significant gains in October and November, climbing to approximately 106 from around 100 in September. This surge is aligned with ongoing FII outflows and the bearish sentiment currently prevailing in Indian markets. A rising dollar index often deters FIIs from viewing emerging markets, including India, as attractive high-return potential candidates. Additionally, as the rupee continues to depreciate against the dollar, India faces higher import costs and mounting inflationary pressures. This impact is evident in the ~20% fall in the BSE Oil and Gas index since September. Elevated inflation is likely to dampen investor sentiment further, potentially leading to reduced inflows into Indian markets. It often seems like he's daring Congress to oppose his decisions. But on Thursday, Trump's attempt to act with impunity showed a crack as Matt Gaetz , his choice for attorney general, withdrew from consideration. Trump had named Gaetz, a Florida congressman, to be the country's top law enforcement official even though he was widely disliked by his colleagues, has little legal experience and was accused of having sex with an underage girl, an allegation he denied. After being plagued by investigations during his first presidency, Trump wanted a devoted ally in charge of the Justice Department during his second. However, it was never obvious that Gaetz could win enough support from lawmakers to get confirmed as attorney general. Trump chose for a replacement Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who defended him during his first impeachment trial and supported his false claims of voter fraud. Now the question is whether Gaetz was uniquely unpalatable, or if Trump's other picks might exceed his party's willingness to overlook concerns that would have sunk nominees in a prior political era. The next test will likely be Pete Hegseth, who Trump wants to lead the Pentagon despite an allegation of sexual assault that he's denied. So far, Republicans are rallying around Hegseth , an Army veteran and former Fox News host. Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the controversy over Gaetz would have little bearing on Trump’s other choices. He said they would be considered “one at a time.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, suggested otherwise, claiming “the dominoes are falling.” “The drip drip of evidence and truth is going to eventually doom some others,” he said. Trump's election victory was a sign that there may not be many red lines left in American politics. He won the presidential race despite authoritarian, racist and misogynist rhetoric, not to mention years of lies about election fraud and his role in sparking the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He was also criminally convicted of falsifying business records to pay hush money, and he was found liable for sexual abuse in a civil case. Empowered by voters who looked past his misconduct and saw him as a powerful agent of change, Trump has shown no deference to Washington norms while working to fill his second administration . The transition team hasn't pursued federal background checks for Trump's personnel choices. While some of his selections have extensive experience in the areas they've been chosen to lead, others are personal friends and Fox News personalities who have impressed and flattered Trump over the years. Several have faced allegations involving sexual misconduct . Hegseth is facing the most scrutiny after Gaetz. Once Trump announced Hegseth as his nominee for Pentagon chief, allegations emerged that he sexually assaulted a woman in California in 2017. The woman said he took her phone, blocked the door to the hotel room and refused to let her leave, according to a police report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing, the report said. However, he paid the woman a confidential settlement in 2023. Hegseth's lawyer said the payment was made to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit. Trump’s choice for secretary of health and human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has faced allegations of misconduct too. A woman who babysat for him and his second wife told Vanity Fair magazine that Kennedy groped her in the late 1990s, when she was 23. Kennedy did not deny the allegation and texted an apology to the woman after the article was published. That isn't the only hurdle for Kennedy; he's spent years spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories about vaccines, raising fears about making him a top health official in the new administration. Linda McMahon, chosen by Trump to be education secretary, is fighting a lawsuit connected to her former company, World Wrestling Entertainment. She’s accused of knowingly enabling sexual exploitation of children by an employee as early as the 1980s, and she denies the allegations. Tulsi Gabbard is another person who could face a difficult confirmation battle, but for very different reasons. The former Democratic representative from Hawaii has been a vocal Trump ally, and he chose her to be national intelligence director. But there's grave concern by lawmakers and national security officials over Gabbard’s history of echoing Russian propaganda. Critics said she would endanger relationships with U.S. allies. Gaetz was investigated by federal law enforcement for sex trafficking, but the case was closed without charges and Republicans have blocked the release of a related report from the House Ethics Committee. However, some allegations leaked out, including that Gaetz paid women for sex. One of the women testified to the committee that she saw Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old girl, according to a lawyer for the woman. As Gaetz met with senators this week, it became clear that he would face stubborn resistance from lawmakers who were concerned about his behavior and believed he was unqualified to run the Justice Department. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction,” Gaetz wrote on social media when announcing his withdrawal. Sen. Mike Braun, an Indiana Republican, said he believed there were four to six members of the caucus who would have voted against Gaetz, likely dooming his nomination, and “the math got too hard.” He said some of the issues and allegations around Gaetz were “maybe beyond the pale." “I think there were just too many things, it was like a leaky dike, and you know, it broke," Braun said. Trump thanked Gaetz in a post on Truth Social, his social media website, without addressing the substance of the allegations against him. “He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect,” Trump wrote. Associated Press writers Mary Clare Jalonick, Stephen Groves and Lisa Macaro contributed from Washington. VANCOUVER — Vancouver Canucks defenceman Filip Hronek is expected to be out until the end of January as he recovers from a lower-body injury. General manager Patrik Allvin issued a statement Tuesday saying Hronek underwent a successful procedure for the undisclosed ailment and is expected to miss about eight weeks. He says the 27-year-old Czech blueliner will not require surgery for an upper-body injury. Hronek hasn't played since going into the endboards hard late in Vancouver's 5-4 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh last Wednesday. He's been paired with captain Quinn Hughes for much of the season and registered eight points (one goal, eight assists) in 21 games. The Canucks (13-7-3) have dealt with a litany of notable absences this season, including all-star goalie Thatcher Demko, who remains sidelined with a knee injury, and star centre J.T. Miller, who's on an indefinite leave for personal reasons. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 3, 2024.
