LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Andrej Jakimovski converted an off-balance layup with 8 seconds left, and Colorado handed No. 2 UConn its second loss in two days at the Maui Invitational, beating the two-time defending national champion 73-72 on Tuesday. A day after a 99-97 overtime loss to Memphis that left Huskies coach Dan Hurley livid about the officiating, UConn (4-2) couldn't shake the unranked Buffaloes (5-1), who shot 62.5% in the second half. With Colorado trailing 72-71 in the closing seconds, Jakimovski drove to his right and absorbed contact from UConn’s Liam McNeeley. He tossed the ball toward the glass and the shot was good as he fell to the floor. Hassan Diarra missed a 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer for UConn. Elijah Malone and Julian Hammond III scored 16 points each for Colorado, and Jakimovski had 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Huskies led 40-32 at halftime and by nine points early in the second half, but Colorado quickly closed that gap. McNeeley led UConn with 20 points. UConn: Hurley's squad is facing its first adversity in quite a while. The Huskies arrived on Maui with a 17-game winning streak that dated to February. Colorado: The Buffaloes were held to season lows in points (56) and field goal percentage (37%) in a 16-point loss to Michigan State on Monday but shot 51.1% overall and 56.3% (9 of 16) from 3-point range against the Huskies. Hurley called timeout to set up the Huskies' final possession, but the Buffs forced them to take a contested 3. Colorado had a 28-26 rebounding advantage after being out-rebounded 42-29 by Michigan State. Colorado will play the Iowa-Dayton winner in the fifth-place game on Wednesday. UConn will play the loser of that matchup in the seventh-place game. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . According to reports, Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels are in agreement on a contract that will make the six-time Super Bowl champion the successor to Mack Brown in Chapel Hill. The deal is three years for $30 million, according to The Athletic . It's the first time in Belichick's decades-long football career that he'll coach at the college level. He started as a special assistant for the Baltimore Colts in 1975 and rose up the ranks from there. He took his first NFL head coaching job for the Cleveland Browns in 1991 and eventually joined the Patriots in 2000. After the 2023 NFL season ended, Belichick and the Patriots mutually agreed to part ways. When the 72-year-old didn't get a job in the ensuing hiring cycle, he settled for a one-year hiatus from coaching. For the last few months, Belichick has been a regular in ESPN's "Pat McAfee Show" and its "ManningCast" with Peyton and Eli Manning during "Monday Night Football" games. Going forward, Belichick will try to right the ship at UNC, where his dad was an assistant coach in the 1950s. NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more. Punjab Kings, who retained only two uncapped players have Rs 110 crore left, while Rajasthan Royals have just Rs 41 crore after retaining six players. The teams have to acquire a minimum of 18 players and can get up to 25 players in their squads. Out of 577 players, 204 could go under the hammer on Sunday at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Retentions affecting auction dynamics On October 31, the 10 franchises announced their retained players. While there were a few obvious retentions, some teams surprised both fans and experts alike. Further, most teams require a wicket-keeper along with a backup. This keeps both foreign and Indian keepers, be it capped or uncapped, in demand. Most teams have also chosen to leave out their spinners and would want to assemble a strong bowling lineup with a lead spinner. Franchises will want experienced bowlers like Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin. Other spinners like Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar will also be integral parts of teams' plans. Further, both Indian and foreign pacers are likely to go big in the auction. Even inexperienced or uncapped pacers will be sought after. Since this is a mega auction and the fact the most teams need to buy at least 12-15 players, the likeliness of a lot of players going for over Rs 15 crore is low. Teams will want to manage their money according to the available budget. However, there would be three or four players who might fetch up to Rs 20 crore by teams like PBKS, RCB and GT. The auction has the knack of spurring surprises every year and there could be a few unexpected buys this year too. Tyler Herro recorded game highs of 27 points and nine assists before being ejected during a hostile final minute as the Miami Heat rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to beat the host Houston Rockets 104-100 on Sunday. Herro was one of five players tossed in the final 47.4 seconds after Nikola Jovic's 3-pointer gave Miami a 98-94 lead. Houston's Fred VanVleet was ejected first for arguing a five-second call on the Rockets' ensuing inbounds play. Twelve seconds later, Herro and Rockets forward Amen Thompson ignited a skirmish that led to both being disqualified along with Heat guard Terry Rozier and Houston guard Jalen Green. Rockets head coach Ime Udoka and assistant Ben Sullivan were also kicked out. Jovic tacked on two free throws after the chaos to help Miami close out the win. He finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists off the bench. Haywood Highsmith tallied 15 points and eight rebounds for the Heat, who played a fifth consecutive game without Jimmy Butler. Bam Adebayo paired 12 points with 10 boards. Dillon Brooks scored a team-high 22 points for Houston after missing the last three games with right ankle soreness. Alperen Sengun added 18 points and 18 rebounds, while Green scored 19 points before his ejection. Herro led a 20-9 run that closed Miami to within 82-81 at the end of the third quarter. He also fueled the Heat down the stretch in the fourth, assisting on Highsmith's tying 3-pointer with 4:47 left before adding a 9-footer for a 95-94 lead with 1:56 to play. Brooks tallied nine points during a 14-2 spurt early in the third quarter that pushed the Rockets to a nine-point lead. Green's 3-pointer made it 73-61 with 5:19 left in the third before Miami began to chip away behind Herro, who finished the quarter with 11 points and four assists. The Heat used a 12-0 run to build a 31-27 lead after the first quarter. Neither team gained control of the second as Miami carried a 53-50 lead into the break. Rozier led the Heat with 12 points in the first half, while Sengun paced Houston with 14. --Field Level Media/ReutersEel has been selected as Japan's "Dish of the Year" in 2024, reflecting its popularity among inbound tourists and progress in research to pursue its sustainability amid dwindling catches, a restaurant search website operator said. Gurunavi Inc. also said opportunities to consume eel have expanded beyond celebratory occasions due to an improvement in processing technology, making the fish available in such forms as "onigiri" rice balls. In Japan, researchers are conducting studies to realize a complete aquaculture process, where eels raised from eggs are artificially inseminated to produce the next generation. "We want people to enjoy eels in various forms in daily life, while being aware of the importance of natural eels as a resource," a Gurunavi official said in early December. Japanese craft gin came in second. Domestically distilled products are winning increasing recognition overseas, with various areas of the country starting to create their own gin with different flavors, Gurunavi said. Premium ramen noodles were given the "Inbound Award" on the back of their rising popularity among travelers visiting Japan, the company said, as the recent weakness of the yen has increasingly made it a reasonable yet high-quality dish. An increasing number of ramen shops are differentiating themselves from rivals by adding value to ingredients, noodles and soups, while some have started taking reservations or introducing priority entry, Gurunavi said. The company selects its "Dish of the Year" based on the search history on its website and the results of a questionnaire.
Mukesh Ambani gets big milestone, Reliance’s first-ever refinery at Jamnagar completes...Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president, has died at 100 ATLANTA (AP) — Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died. He was 100 years old and had spent roughly 22 months in hospice care. The Georgia peanut farmer served one turbulent term in the White House before building a reputation as a global humanitarian and champion of democracy. He defeated President Gerald Ford in 1976 promising to restore trust in government but lost to Ronald Reagan four years later amid soaring inflation, gas station lines and the Iran hostage crisis. He and his wife Rosalynn then formed The Carter Center, and he earned a Nobel Peace Prize while making himself the most internationally engaged of former presidents. The Carter Center said he died peacefully Sunday afternoon in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. Jimmy Carter: Many evolutions for a centenarian ‘citizen of the world’ PLAINS, Ga. (AP) — The 39th and longest-lived U.S. president, James Earl Carter Jr., died Sunday at the age of 100. His life ended where it began, in Plains, Georgia. He left and returned to the tiny town many times as he climbed to the nation’s highest office and lost it after four tumultuous years. Carter spent the next 40 years setting new standards for what a former president can do. Carter wrote nearly a decade ago that he found all the phases of his life challenging but also successful and enjoyable. The Democrat's principled but pragmatic approach defied American political labels, especially the idea that one-term presidents are failures. Jet crash disaster in South Korea marks another setback for Boeing WASHINGTON (AP) — A machinists strike. Another safety problem involving its troubled top-selling airliner. A plunging stock price. 2024 was already a dispiriting year for Boeing, the American aviation giant. But when one of the company’s jets crash-landed in South Korea on Sunday, killing all but two of the 181 people on board, it brought to a close an especially unfortunate year for Boeing. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and aviation experts were quick to distinguish Sunday’s incident from the company’s earlier safety problems. Alan Price, an airline consultant, said it would be inappropriate to link the incident Sunday to two fatal crashes involving Boeing’s troubled 737 Max jetliner in 2018 and 2019. Tornadoes in Texas and Mississippi kill 2 and injure 6 as severe weather system moves east HOUSTON (AP) — A strong storm system is threatening to whip up tornadoes in parts of the U.S. Southeast, a day after severe weather claimed at least two lives as twisters touched down in Texas and Mississippi. Strong storms moving eastward Sunday are expected to continue producing gusty, damaging winds, hail and tornadoes through Sunday. That is according to National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira. So far, the line of severe weather has led to about 40 tornado reports from southeastern Texas to Alabama, Pereira said, but those reports remain unconfirmed until surveys of damage are completed. Israeli hospital says Netanyahu has undergone successful prostate surgery TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — An Israeli hospital says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has undergone successful prostate surgery. Netanyahu’s office had said Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a close ally, would serve as acting prime minister during the procedure. Doctors ordered the operation after detecting an infection last week. Netanyahu is expected to remain hospitalized for several days. With so much at stake, Netanyahu’s health in wartime is a concern for both Israelis and the wider world. Azerbaijan's president says crashed jetliner was shot down by Russia unintentionally Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev says the Azerbaijani airliner that crashed last week was shot down by Russia, albeit unintentionally. Aliyev told Azerbaijani state television on Sunday that the aircraft was hit by fire from the ground over Russia and rendered uncontrollable by electronic warfare. He accused Russia of trying to “hush up” the issue for several days. The crash on Wednesday killed 38 of 67 people on board. Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized to Aliyev on Saturday for what he called a “tragic incident” but stopped short of acknowledging Moscow’s responsibility. Croatia's incumbent president gains most votes for re-election, but not enough to avoid a runoff ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — Croatia’s incumbent President Zoran Milanovic has swept most votes in the first round of a presidential election, but will have to face a runoff against a ruling party candidate to secure another five-year term. With 99% percent of the vote counted Sunday, Milanovic won 49% while his main challenger Dragan Primorac, a candidate of the ruling HDZ party, trailed far behind with 19%. Pre-election polls had predicted that the two would face off in the second round on Jan. 12, as none of the eight presidential election contenders were projected to get more than 50% of the vote.
