News story speaks volumes This, from the Dec. 16 Chicago Tribune: “A former FBI informant pleaded guilty on Monday to lying about a phony bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.” The informant, Alexander Smirnov, told the FBI a Ukrainian energy company paid the Bidens $5 million each around 2015. Smirnov also claimed Russian officials had recordings from a meeting in a Kiev hotel wired for sound and controlled by Russians. Both are fabrications. Smirnov’s indictment reveals Hunter Biden never even traveled to Ukraine. The article continues, “No evidence has emerged that Joe Biden acted corruptly or accepted bribes as president or in his previous office as vice president.” Smirnov’s lies triggered the Republican effort in Congress to investigate the Bidens and a House impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden, despite acknowledging they could not confirm Smirnov’s allegations were true. The Russians spread this story as part of their disinformation campaign. Republicans spread it as part of their presidential campaign. All too many American voters swallowed it hook, line and sinker. Note that Smirnov was indicted on Feb. 14 for making a false statement and creating a false and fictitious record, almost nine months before the U.S. presidential election. As an American voter, how does this make you feel? I can understand why an enemy, Russia, would spread malicious disinformation. I’ll never understand why an American political party, the party of Lincoln, would also spread misinformation. Who will replace Ray Hadley? Bizarre theory emerges over broadcast veteran's potential successor READ MORE: Ray Hadley's multimillion retirement property investment revealed By A. JAMES FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA Published: 18:31 EST, 22 November 2024 | Updated: 18:44 EST, 22 November 2024 e-mail View comments Ray Hadley shocked listeners earlier this month when he announced he was hanging up his mic for good in December . And as the 70-year-old's retirement looms, speculation is hot over who will take his seat at Channel Nine's flagship station, 2GB. Front runners include current 2GB personalities Ben Fordham , and Chris O'Keefe. But since Channel Nine management has the summer to settle on the host's ultimate successor, a bizarre theory has emerged about how 2GB plans to fill the void left by Hadley in the meantime. Instead of popping in a stand-in announcer for Hadley's regular 9-12pm slot, there's now speculation that presenters will 'likely' have their shifts 'extended', according to The Daily Telegraph . There's been no confirmation from 2GB management over their plans. Ray Hadley astounded listeners earlier this month when he announced he was hanging up his mic for good in December. As the 70-year-old's retirement looms, speculation is hot over who will take his seat at Channel Nine's flagship station, 2GB. (Pictured) Instead of popping in a stand-in announcer for Hadley's regular 9-12pm slot, there's now speculation that presenters will 'likely' have their shifts 'extended' before a full-time successor is announced. Pictured: Ben Fordham Meanwhile, insiders are tipping 2GB's reigning breakfast show host Ben Fordham as his likely replacement. The tireless talkback presenter has repeatedly shown he is more than capable of winning over a crowd. He was given the almost impossible task of replacing 2GB's all-powerful Alan Jones four years ago and has since proved a runaway success at retaining the station's critical early morning audience. He's well-known to audiences after doing impressive stints with Sky News, A Current Affair and 60 Minutes. The only drawback? The internal shuffle would just create further headaches for Nine Radio execs who would then have to replace him at breakfast. There's also much talk about Nine reporter Chris O'Keefe comfortably slotting into Hadley's old chair. Currently wowing 2GB listeners in the station's 3-6pm drive time slot he impressed management as Nine Sydney's state political editor before switching formats. Also in the mix to replace Hadley is talkback veteran Jason Morrison. Front runners for Hadley's gig include current 2GB stars Ben Fordham and Chris O'Keefe (pictured) Read More Viewers mock Ray Hadley's new TV move with hilarious throwback post He kicked off his lengthy media career at 2GB as a cadet reporter in 1989 at the tender age of 17. Just 10 years later he was the station's director of news - the youngest person to ever hold the role – and been giving a weekly newspaper column. Like Fordham and O'Keefe, Morrison is a veteran of 2GB's drivetime slot, hosting the show between 2008 and 2010. He was also Alan Jones regular fill-in host at breakfast during the golden age of talkback and, according to industry legend, even out-rated him during one extended stint before defecting to rival 2UE. Morrison eventually left radio for the glitz and glamour of television during an eight-year run as Seven's Sydney news director before taking some time out with his young family last year. There is currently speculation that Sydney's 2SM are pursuing him for a major role. Insiders are also pointing to former Nine player Liam Bartlett. The award-winning journalist is a favourite among executives across all of the country's commercial networks - and was even a headline act at the national broadcaster for a while – due to his hard-hitting, take-no-prisoners approach to interviews. This year he made headlines for his chat with billionaire former media baron James Packer and for breaking the 'fake gun shots' scandal enveloping the ABC. A former presenter A Current Affair and 60 minutes, he's also worked for Seven's Spotlight. After leaving 60 Minutes for the second time five years ago, he enjoyed a successful stint at 2GB's sister station 6PR in his hometown of Perth. Sources said he enjoyed a strong relationship with Nine Radio boss Tom Malone while the duo worked together at 60 Minutes and that he shouldn't be ruled out of contention. Login or signup to continue reading Friday, December 13, owner Michael Hope, of Hope Estate, confirmed yesterday. The menu has been released, and it's an impressive one. Starters include olives and Guindilla peppers with grissini, chicken liver pate with Borettane onions and crusty bread, and duck and pistachio terrine. Small plates? Think bresaola with tomato, horseradish, beetroot, pistachio crumb, saffron mayo and pecorino romano; seared scallops with cauliflower cream, chorizo crumb, salmon roe and smoked extra virgin olive oil; prawn and white fish cappelletti with lobster bisque; and Sicilian-style grilled octopus with olives, potato, tomato and chilli, to name a few. Large plates include the braised Angus beef tortelloni with pancetta, carrot, sage and beef stock reduction; oven-baked spatchcock with charred baby capsicum, pumpkin puree, chimichurri and stock reduction; a 12-hour smoked beef brisket with colcannon potato, heirloom tomato, chorizo compote and red wine jus; a fillet of Aquna Murray cod with pasta fregola, tomato, lobster bisque and braised fennel; duo of duck breast and confit leg Sheppard's pie with celeriac, baby pear and black truffle jus gras; and a range of vegetarian and "from the garden" options. Hope Estate executive chef Anthony Fullerton has a keen interest in dry-aged beef and has been working with the Hope family to develop their Black Angus cattle. Michael Hope's son, Jonno, turned his attention to cattle farming in 2019 to utilise the spent grain from the family's brewery. The business soon branched out to the 530-hectare Nioka Farm, located at the foothills of the Barrington Tops in the Upper Hunter Valley. The cattle are grass-fed on the farm and then transported to the pastures adjacent to Hope Estate at Pokolbin, where they spend 120 days being fed spent grain from Hope Estate's brewery and distillery production. Prime cuts are then dry-aged in Hope's custom-made dry-ageing facility. The steakhouse was originally meant to open at Hope at Honeysuckle (Newcastle's former maritime centre) but has instead found a home at the former Hope Estate at The Landing. If visitors ask me where they should eat while they are in Newcastle, Nagisa Japanese Restaurant always gets a mention. The quality of the food, the extensive wine list, the friendly and professional service, the consistency ... it makes for a memorable dining experience. Last month the Yamba family hosted a celebratory 20 th anniversary lunch at Nagisa (which spilled over into their neighbouring Honeysuckle restaurant, Âpé Yakitori Bar). There was a Taiko drum performance and a large sake barrel, and the many guests were served a selection of 20 canapes to represent each of the 20 years the restaurant has been open. To the Yamba family and Nagisa staff past and present, congratulations on two decades of dining excellence in Newcastle. I heard from Rob Fonti last week, letting me know his Belmont restaurant, Salina, is still open for business (despite being on the market). It also has a new summer menu. New dishes include the homemade chocolate gelato, Pina Colada gelato and mango granita; lamb loin fillet with spinach, roast capsicum, goat's cheese, pear and lentil salad, broccolini and walnut salsa; fish of the day fillet with prawn, asparagus, peas, feta and risoni salad and sun-dried tomato tapenade; and the buffalo mozzarella with prosciutto, peach, avocado, pomegranate and grilled ciabatta. You can drop by for a Prosecco and a pizza in the rear garden courtyard, too. Rob says there has been "a good amount of interest and a couple of close offers, but not enough to seal the deal". The restaurant is listed for sale through Raine and Horne Newcastle. Teppanyaki fun I stopped by Fukusui Japanese Teppanyaki Restaurant at Warners Bay last week for a birthday dinner, having previously dined there a decade or more ago, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The restaurant relies on word of mouth, and it's obviously working. It was sold out on a Tuesday night. The chef was in fine form at the grill, flicking scrambled egg here and there and spinning utensils at his hip like a Wild West cowboy, entertaining us with his facial expressions alone. Kids love it, and the food is very good. Try the plum-flavoured jelly sparkling wine in a can. It's an interesting experience. The Oceane Hotel is opening at 29 Honeysuckle Drive "soon", according to its social media pages. Details are hard to come by. Pork Ewe Deli at Mayfield is taking Christmas orders (platters, foie gras, caviar, smoked seafood, cheeses, meat) until December 16. Chef Mitch Beswick has clocked up a decade at Muse Restaurant. Jjindakk at shop 1/50 Beaumont Street in Hamilton has updated its menu with corn cheese, beef bulgogi nachos and a spicy cheese buldak. Have you tried Guzman y Gomez 's breakfast range? I tried the Brekkie Taco the other day (flour tortilla, scrambled eggs, bacon or chorizo, Jack cheese, pico de Gallo, jalapeno ketchup) and was pleasantly surprised. There's also a Brekkie Burrito, Big Brekkie Burrito or avo on toast. CorEat Newcastle has just launched a good-looking December Degustation menu, $75 per person.
