He added that he and U.N. colleagues were safe. “We will need to wait for the damage to the airport to be repaired before we can leave,” he said, without mentioning the source of the bombardment. The Israeli strikes followed several days of Houthi launches setting off sirens in Israel. The Israeli military said it attacked infrastructure used by the Houthis at the international airport in Sanaa and ports in the cities of Hodeida, Al-Salif and Ras Qantib, along with power stations, asserting they were used to smuggle in Iranian weapons and for the entry of senior Iranian officials. Israel's military didn't immediately respond to questions about Tedros' post but issued a statement saying it had "capabilities to strike very far from Israel’s territory — precisely, powerfully, and repetitively.” The strikes came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “the Houthis, too, will learn what Hamas and Hezbollah and Assad’s regime and others learned" as his military has battled those more powerful proxies of Iran. The Iran-backed Houthis' media outlet confirmed the strikes in a Telegram post but gave no immediate details. The U.S. military also has targeted the Houthis in Yemen in recent days. The United Nations has noted that the targeted ports are important entryways for humanitarian aid for Yemen, that plunged into a . Over the weekend, 16 people were wounded when . Last week, Sanaa and Hodeida, killing nine people, calling it a response to previous Houthi attacks. The Houthis also have been targeting shipping on the Red Sea corridor, calling it solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting Monday in response to an Israeli request that the council condemn the Houthi attacks and Iran for supplying weapons to the rebels. Meanwhile, an Israeli strike killed five Palestinian journalists outside a hospital , the territory's Health Ministry said. The Israeli military said that all were militants posing as reporters. The strike hit a car outside Al-Awda Hospital in the built-up Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The journalists were working for the local news outlet Al-Quds Today, a television channel affiliated with the Islamic Jihad militant group. Islamic Jihad is a smaller and more extreme ally of Hamas and took part in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel, which ignited the war. The Israeli military identified four of the men as combat propagandists and said that intelligence, including a list of Islamic Jihad operatives found by soldiers in Gaza, had confirmed that all five were affiliated with the group. Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian militant groups operate political, media and charitable operations in addition to their armed wings. Associated Press footage showed the incinerated shell of a van, with press markings visible on the back doors. Sobbing young men attended the funeral outside the hospital. The bodies were wrapped in shrouds, with blue press vests draped over them. The Committee to Protect Journalists says more than 130 Palestinian reporters have been killed since the start of the war. Israel hasn't allowed foreign reporters to enter Gaza except on military embeds. Israel has banned the pan-Arab Al Jazeera network and . The Qatar-based broadcaster denies the allegations and accuses Israel of trying to silence its war coverage, which has focused heavily on civilian casualties from Israeli military operations. Separately, Israel's military said that a 35-year-old reserve soldier was killed during fighting in central Gaza early Thursday. A total of 389 soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the start of the ground operation more than a year ago. The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed across the border in an attack on nearby army bases and farming communities. They killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted around 250. About 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third believed to be dead. Israel's air and ground offensive has killed more than 45,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry. It says more than half the fatalities have been women and children, but doesn't say how many of the dead were fighters. Israel says it has killed more than 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The offensive has caused widespread destruction and driven around 90% of the population of 2.3 million from their homes. Hundreds of thousands are packed into squalid tent camps along the coast, with from the cold, wet winter. Also Thursday, people mourned eight Palestinians killed by Israeli military operations in and around the city of Tulkarem in the occupied on Tuesday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The Israeli military said that it opened fire after militants attacked soldiers, and it was aware of uninvolved civilians who were harmed in the raid.HOUSTON (AP) — An elaborate parody appears to be behind an effort to resurrect Enron, the Houston-based energy company that exemplified the worst in American corporate fraud and greed after it went bankrupt in 2001. If its return is comedic, some former employees who lost everything in Enron’s collapse aren’t laughing. “It’s a pretty sick joke and it disparages the people that did work there. And why would you want to even bring it back up again?” said former Enron employee Diana Peters, who represented workers in the company’s bankruptcy proceedings. Here’s what to know about the history of Enron and the purported effort to bring it back. Once the nation’s seventh-largest company, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 2, 2001, after years of accounting tricks could no longer hide billions of dollars in debt or make failing ventures appear profitable. The energy company's collapse put more than 5,000 people out of work, wiped out more than $2 billion in employee pensions and rendered $60 billion in Enron stock worthless. Its aftershocks were felt throughout the energy sector. Twenty-four Enron executives , including former CEO Jeffrey Skilling , were eventually convicted for their roles in the fraud. Enron founder Ken Lay’s convictions were vacated after he died of heart disease following his 2006 trial. On Monday — the 23rd anniversary of the bankruptcy filing — a company representing itself as Enron announced in a news release that it was relaunching as a “company dedicated to solving the global energy crisis.” It also posted a video on social media, advertised on at least one Houston billboard and a took out a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle In the minute-long video that was full of generic corporate jargon, the company talks about “growth” and “rebirth.” It ends with the words, “We’re back. Can we talk?” Enron's new website features a company store, where various items featuring the brand's tilted “E” logo are for sale, including a $118 hoodie. In an email, company spokesperson Will Chabot said the new Enron was not doing any interviews yet, but that "We’ll have more to share soon.” Signs point to the comeback being a joke. In the “terms of use and conditions of sale” on the company's website, it says “the information on the website about Enron is First Amendment protected parody, represents performance art, and is for entertainment purposes only.” Documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that College Company, an Arkansas-based LLC, owns the Enron trademark. The co-founder of College Company is Connor Gaydos, who helped create a joke conspiracy theory that claims all birds are actually surveillance drones for the government. Peters said that since learning about the “relaunch” of Enron, she has spoken with several other former employees and they are also upset by it. She said the apparent stunt was “in poor taste.” “If it’s a joke, it’s rude, extremely rude. And I hope that they realize it and apologize to all of the Enron employees,” Peters said. Peters, who is 74 years old, said she is still working in information technology because “I lost everything in Enron, and so my Social Security doesn’t always take care of things I need done.” “Enron’s downfall taught us critical lessons about corporate ethics, accountability, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. Enron’s legacy was the employees in the trenches. Leave Enron buried,” she said. This story was corrected to fix the spelling of Ken Lay’s first name, which had been misspelled “Key.” Follow Juan A. ZUORA SHAREHOLDER BUYOUT LAWSUIT FILED: Investors Encouraged to Contact Kaskela Law LLC to ...Global stocks mostly rose Tuesday, with US and German indices posting records, as markets weighed Chinese stimulus hopes, political tensions in France and the US interest-rate outlook. Germany's blue-chip DAX stock index jumped above 20,000 points for the first time and Paris rebounded even as France braced for new political turmoil. In New York, both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq narrowly rose to finish at records, while the Dow pulled back. Oil prices jumped more than two percent following reports that crude exporters were near an agreement to extend production limits. A closely-watched labor market report showed an increase in US job openings in October, but also a decline in new job postings during the month, a less upbeat sign. Samuel Tombs, chief US economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said the data overall provides "good grounds" for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates again this month. Still, the choppiness of Tuesday's trading session in New York points to reticence among US investors following a series of post-election records that many pundits believe have left stocks overvalued. "There wasn't a lot of conviction behind the upside moves," said Briefing.com . "The overall vibe in the market was more negative." Stocks in Paris edged higher even as France headed into a new political crisis as opposition lawmakers vowed to topple the minority government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier in a no-confidence vote after just three months in office. Germany's DAX, meanwhile, scored a fresh milestone, defying multiple headwinds battering Europe's biggest economy. The German economy, hit hard by a manufacturing slowdown and weak demand for its exports, has struggled in 2024. Yet the DAX has advanced in large part because companies in the index do heavy business abroad. In addition, the euro's recent weakness has boosted Germany's export-oriented companies, while easing interest rates both in the eurozone and the United States have also helped sentiment. Investors greeted a Bloomberg report that China's top leaders, including President Xi Jinping, would hold a two-day economic work conference next week to outline their targets and stimulus plans for next year. The report followed manufacturing activity data on Monday that suggested China's economic struggles may be coming to an end, but investors are looking for Beijing to step up support for the economy. The news helped push Hong Kong and Shanghai stock markets higher despite Washington announcing new export restrictions taking aim at Beijing's ability to make advanced semiconductors. The moves step up existing US efforts to tighten curbs on exports of state-of-the-art AI chips to China. Beijing hit back by saying it would restrict exports to the United States of some key components in making semiconductors. Oil prices jumped ahead of a meeting Thursday of members of the OPEC oil cartel and its allies "The forecast is that they will announce an extension until the end of the first quarter of 2025, and this should help put a floor under prices," said Trade Nation analyst David Morrison. The Group General Manager, Continental Hotels, Karl Hala and General Manager, Lagos Continental, Christoph Schleissing, recently unveiled projects already embarked on at the Lagos and Abuja hotels aimed at leaving enduring legacies and memories with guests and tourists, writes Charles Ajunwa As I walked into the Lagos Continental Hotel that Morning after the usually detailed security checks through a smaller door as maintenance work was ongoing at the main entrance, guests and tourists were already checking in and out seamlessly with their luggage well arranged on the ground floor lobby. Within and outside the imposing structure on Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, there was this aura of fecundity in the air. The Group General Manager, Continental Hotels, Karl Hala, General Manager, Lagos Continental, Christoph Schleissing and other senior staff by 11 a.m. prompt were on the third-floor venue of the meeting to welcome us. As the lift opened, we were warmly received with pleasantries exchanged before breakfast was served. Hala, who has lived in Nigeria for 16 years with his family, hit the ground running by unveiling the reason for the meeting. According to him, Lagos Continental Hotel and Abuja Continental both formerly Intercontinental and Sheraton respectively, epitomise the luxury and lifestyle hospitality in Nigeria. “Together we have 947 elegantly big-sized rooms and suites and they do offer you unparalleled comfort. You know when you come somewhere, you have a feeling, like you just mentioned, in Asmara, when you feel, ah, I have arrived! “That is Continental. So what they offer is this unique experience that reflects this rich culture and diversity of Nigeria. What else we have and which is extremely iconic are our convention, media and banquet facilities. Both hotels have 5,000 square metres of meeting space, and can accommodate up to 3,500 delegates. Important to note, both are top state-of-the-art, both are pillarless, both have been refurbished recently, both are the centre for best conferencing in Nigeria, whether it’s the government enhancement delegation conference, whether it’s corporate gatherings, weddings or board meetings. So we provide all of that. It’s flexible, versatile and it’s covered by the best teams in the country. “To further support this, we just opened the Ladi Kwali Sports Village in Abuja. And that is a place which features sports facilities from tennis courts, volleyball, squash and table tennis. And a brand new gym which just opened last month (November).together with the gym in Lagos, which will enhance both of them, absolute top of fitness anything you wish within the technology. “So this Ladi Kwali building the sports facilities we added two paddle and two pickleball courts. So, when I was first told paddle built I said of course. So I went back and googled paddle. Paddle is the fastest growing sport in Africa and in Europe. But it has existed since the 60s in the US. “So are pickles. Now you can see it coming all over. So we have that in our premises in Abuja. So that serves as a hub for team-bonding and the togetherness and brainstorming for smaller groups, bigger groups. You want to have your visions for the next three years to come. “You work this and you can build in addition fun exercises. You can have this creativity and fun together. But you do the brainstorming sessions. You come up and challenge your mindset by being fit. “So it’s physical health and health creates future success for your team and for your company. That really has fostered teamwork and collaboration amongst all bodies. Whether it’s the big companies, whether it’s Oriflame or the MVCs or governmental bodies or the UNs, whoever it is, this is the way forward. And we are triggering this success through and through this new Ladi Kwali Village. And then we have a very impressive selection of culinary options in both hotels across 12 restaurants and bars. “We offer the finest Nigerian and international kitchen. And now the challenge. Michelin star. Michelin star is the pinnacle of acknowledgement being the best in the restaurant business. Do you know how many Michelin star restaurants there are in Africa? All over the world, they are in their thousands, but not in Africa. All over the world they are. In their thousands, but not in Africa. So I looked around and there are between LA, London and Dubai eight Nigerian restaurants. And one of them got a Michelin star. It’s Adejoke Bakare, the first black lady in the UK to be awarded. The restaurant is called Chisuru. Challenge through the media, the Mishla guide. Africa, we are here. If you take the story, this is an interesting ending, it has to do with Yam, yeah? So the ancient lore of the humble Nigerian Yam in all different variations. And we have it all over. We created. Now, if we can have success in LA, in Dubai, and in London, therefore, why not here. Shall we take it up together? We help, we push.’ Talking about the festive season which he described as “festive wonderland, festive continental,” adding, “We are to celebrate. It’s a very joyous season. And I must say, I’ve come to Nigeria for the last 16 years, and it has become very joyous. Decorations are there, events are there, you feel more mellow. Hala, who acknowledged the two hotels in Abuja and Lagos are finishing on a strong note economically in the last five months, said Abuja of course celebrates as well from gingerbread houses to amazing landscaping. “So when you come into Abuja because of the 14 hectares, it is a festive Christmas land you’re going to be overwhelmed with. When you come through, you will celebrate between the Christmas Eve’s because here one celebrates on the 25th at lunch, correct? So where we come from, 24th in the evening, so we celebrate both of those. “So they have wine pairings in the evenings, lavish Christmas, Santa lunches on the 25th, and then get ready for the crossovers on the 31st, where it will be between the restaurants and the pool bar. And the swimming pool has just been reopened. Brand new dialing, decking, whatsoever. Again, another brand new feature for us in Abuja. “And then they have very exclusive staycation packages. Makes families welcome to bring their family along and enjoy the sports village, the culinaries, the swimming pool, or just a walk, I want to say in the park, but it is like a park actually. We have a coconut garden, we have a lot of greens and all this around. This is the difference between Abuja and Lagos, the tranquility of Abuja. Greens, the hills, mountains around. It’s an amazing picture. I love both. “We also have Santa surprises for the children, workshops, cooking, everything around Abuja will offer. So similar to Lagos Abuja, just come, see and enjoy and relax. It’s the place to be for families this Christmas and then the crossover of course will be sensational. Not just fireworks, the fireworks will be on a culinary level with the entertainers, the singing, the dancing. And then we put a bit of light into the air, crossover. “For the next event, March, April, before Easter, we want to talk a little bit about academies, development, and how to bring the best skill set out of our teams. Don’t forget, indirectly and directly with Continental Hotels, we have over 1,700 colleagues. So we do have a platform we want to work with and we want to develop. Because the striving talent in Nigeria is always exciting. There is an eagerness to learn, to see, to perform. Now we want to make sure we realise it to the best with all the platforms which we can offer. It means the engagement with our employees comes to the best and up to the strengthening of the leadership. But we’ll discuss this in much more detail with much more exciting news like our own Academy just before Easter. “Yes, come and see us, come and enjoy, because with Continental Hotels, we are moving forward. We are staying agile. We will continue to innovate responsibly. And we will maintain and continue a relentless focus delivering memorable, bespoke experiences that define the Continental experience of luxury for the business.” The General Manager, Lagos Continental Hotel, Schleissing who arrived Lagos in August, from Kazakhstan in Central Asia, threw more light on the activities lined up for the festive period. “We are very much on the festive season and I think you all arrived to the lobby. You saw that we made a very nice, very festive decoration in the lobby. The goal was really to build a winter wonderland. We have a real Christmas boutique. We sell specialties all over the world. Some of them, we brought them directly from Germany or Italy or the UK. And many of them, we produce in-house. So it’s real, I think it’s a must to pass by the Boutique Alhambra. On the other hand, we go on.” On what he finds interesting about Nigeria, he said “First, is the climate and secondly, for me, most important are the people. When I look here at our people and our team, this genuine hospitality, very welcoming, we all speak the same language, makes my task to deliver exceptional hospitality, you know, easier.”

Michigan fired offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell on Tuesday, ending his three-year tenure with the team and his first as playcaller. Campbell oversaw an offense that had slipped to 112th nationally in scoring and 129th in passing this fall, while using three different starting quarterbacks. He served as Michigan's quarterbacks coach in 2022, mentoring eventual first-round NFL draft pick J.J. McCarthy when the team won its first national championship since 1997. "This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program," Moore said in a statement. "I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan football and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors." Tight ends coach Steve Casula will serve as interim offensive coordinator. Michigan, which upset archrival Ohio State to finish the regular season 7-5, will learn its bowl assignment and opponent this weekend. Campbell was offensive coordinator at Old Dominion in 2020 and 2021 before joining Michigan's staff as an offensive analyst in 2022. After McCarthy entered the NFL draft, Michigan turned to Davis Warren , a former walk-on quarterback, to open the season as the starter. Alex Orji and Jack Tuttle also started games at quarterback before Michigan went back to Warren. The offense will be replacing top running backs Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards and will lose top wide receiver Tyler Morris to the transfer portal. Junior tight end Colston Loveland , who leads Michigan in receptions (56), receiving yards (582) and receiving touchdowns (5), is a top NFL prospect and could elect to enter the draft in 2025. Michigan recently gained a commitment from quarterback Bryce Underwood , ESPN's top overall recruit in the 2025 class.

Iran said it will start easing some of the world’s tightest internet restrictions by lifting its ban on WhatsApp and Google Play — a sign that authorities want to placate domestic opponents as the Islamic Republic faces major economic and foreign-policy challenges. Earlier on Tuesday, Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace approved the lifting of blocks on “certain widely used foreign platforms” according to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency, which named WhatsApp and Google Play as the first two applications to be unblocked. Since the 2009 protests against the reelection of hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, social media networks including Facebook, X and YouTube have been banned or restricted by authorities who’ve blamed them for facilitating protests and fomenting opposition to the state. Iran’s government has faced criticism for years from ordinary Iranians, Western governments, the United Nations and political activists for its draconian attitude toward the internet. Officials — most of whom use banned social media sites to run their own public-facing accounts — often fail to deliver on promises to reduce censorship. Instead, it’s increased significantly over the past 10 years. It’s not clear when Tuesday’s decision will come into effect. IRNA said it was reached by a unanimous vote at a council meeting attended by the head of the judiciary and reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian who’d pledged to relax internet freedoms for Iranians when he was elected in July. The move comes as the Islamic Republic, already widely unpopular at home following a nationwide 2022 uprising that was brutally suppressed, is locked in a standoff with Israel for supporting Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Both groups — designated as terrorist organizations by the U.S. and its allies — have been crippled by Israel’s military response to the October 2023 attacks by Hamas. The ouster of Bashar al-Assad in Syria has also upended Iran’s foreign policy at a time when it’s struggling to keep the lights on for industry and households amid a major fuel and natural-gas crisis. “The process of lifting cyberspace restrictions will be multistaged and ongoing, and it won’t be limited to the removal of restrictions on one or a few platforms,” IRNA said. Complete internet blackouts have often been imposed on Iranians, including during protests in November 2019 and the 2022 nationwide uprising, which prompted the U.S. government at the time to ease restrictions on internet services to Iran, such as Elon Musk’s Starlink. The Washington-based Freedom House said Iran was among the three least free countries in the world in terms of internet access — after China and Myanmar — in its annual “Internet Freedom Scores” ranking. ©2024 Bloomberg L.P. Photo: The Canadian Press A lone killer whale breaks the water in a Comox, B.C., harbour on Tuesday July 31, 2018. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jen Osborne A family of killer whales has made a rare trip into waters off downtown Vancouver for what an expert says was likely a "grocery shopping" hunt for harbour seals. Video shared on social media by False Creek Ferries shows the whales cruising past highrise towers at the entrance to False Creek on Sunday. Andrew Trites, director of the University of British Columbia's marine mammal research unit, has identified the whales as a family group of transient orcas consisting of a mother and her three offspring. He says it's the first time the 26-year-old mother, known as T35A, has shown up in downtown Vancouver with her children aged six, 11 and 14. Trites says the well documented family has previously been seen by marine researchers from Alaska to the Strait of Juan de Fuca south of Vancouver Island. He attributes the pod's surprising downtown appearance to seals also changing their habits as they hide from orcas, forcing killer whales to hunt in backwater areas like False Creek. Trites says the video shows the whales moving quietly like "ghosts" to avoid alerting their prey. Killer whales have previously been spotted in False Creek, including in 2019, and in 2010 a grey whale swam all the way to the end of the inlet, near Science World.

However, the disgraced Duke of York spends most of his time shut away at the “crumbling” Royal Lodge in Windsor, with his “loyal” daughters taking it in turns to check in on him. Five years after his divisive Newsnight interview triggered the end to his public life, Prince Andrew now leans on "protective” Princess Beatrice, 36, and Princess Eugenie , 34. A source tells HELLO !: "The girls take the grandchildren to visit him most weekends. “They are spending far more time with him now than they have done in recent years. "They are quite close to their father; they seem to be quite protective towards him." The Duke of York - who shares his £30million, 30-bedroom home with ex wife Sarah Ferguson - is said to have found solace in his grandkids. He has been seen driving Sienna Mapelli-Mozzi - the three-year-old daughter of Beatrice and husband Edoardo Mapelli-Mozzi - around the Windsor Estate. Andrew has also been helping his young granddaughter take the reins as she learns to ride horses, which is a popular hobby in the royal family. Both Beatrice and Eugenie are also said to have invited friends over to the estate to go shooting in recent weeks. When Prince Andrew isn’t spending time with his grandkids, he plays golf and horserides himself in the grounds of Windsor Castle. He also spends time with former wife Sarah, Duchess of York, and they walk their five Norfolk Terriers, and two Corgis, who used to belong to the late Queen. Prince Andrew stepped back from public life in 2019, following being linked to American financier and child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Royal author Robert Hardman tells HELLO!'s Right Royal Podcast : "He's got nothing else, he's got no public life, he has no public role. "He is clearly devoted to this home and he likes being there, so if he can make it work, he's going to try." The 19th century listed Royal Lodge was where the late Queen Elizabeth spent part of her childhood and boasts 40 hectares of woodland and lawns, eight cottages, and lodgings for security personnel. Charles, 75, is said to have wanted Andrew out of the house for years. But Andrew, who moved into Royal Lodge in 2004 - has refused to move, after taking on a lease that lasts until 2078. THE disgraced Duke of York resides at the £30million Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, Berkshire - at least for now. King Charles has redoubled his efforts to evict the Duke - with insiders branding the stand-off the " siege of Royal Lodge ". Despite his divorce from Sarah Ferguson in 1996, Prince Andrew lives with his ex-wife at the countryside estate. Prince Andrew's royal residence, with its eye-catching white exterior, boasts 30 rooms with plenty of space for entertaining, plus seven bedrooms spread across the two topmost floors. The Duke of York is said to spend all day "watching TV in a dark room" like a prisoner at his "crumbling" home. Royal Lodge is said to "need extensive repairs", thought to be about £400,000 a year. The monarch is said to be becoming increasingly frustrated at Andrew’s refusal to care for the colossal mansion. Andrew is said to have promised King Charles he would take care of its expensive repairs - despite having no apparent source of income. His Majesty urged him to follow the late Queen’s plan and move out of the 30-bed mansion and into nearby Frogmore Cottage, the former home of Prince Harry and Meghan. This month, we revealed how Prince Andrew - who does not work but has links to oligarchs - has lost his annual £3million-a-year hand-out from brother Charles which funded guards at Windsor’s Royal Lodge. But Andrew has now convinced Palace authorities he has sufficient funds to support himself, including security costing £3million annually and repairing the 19th century Grade II listed property at around £400,000 a year. His plan is believed to be bankrolled by Middle East money .

jilibay vip login register download About 600,000 small businesses will start receiving their long-awaited federal carbon rebates today. The federal government has promised to return about $2.5 billion collected from small and medium-sized businesses through carbon pricing since 2019. The initial plan was to return the money annually through various programs to encourage energy-efficiency investments, but those mostly failed to materialize. Small businesses had complained repeatedly they were paying a significant portion of carbon pricing collected by Ottawa but were getting nothing back because 90 per cent of the revenue collected was returned in rebates to households. Individual businesses will start receiving their rebates today. The amounts will depend on which provinces the businesses operate in and how many workers they employ. Trudeau government to send $250 cheques to most workers, slash GST on some goods PBO says deficit likely exceeded Liberals' $40B pledge, economy to rebound in 2025 Small, medium-size businesses to receive carbon rebates in December The funds were to go out next month but Small Business Minister Rechie Valdez told a news conference in Ottawa on Monday that payments are being sent now instead. Valdez said a small business with 10 employees in Winnipeg can expect to receive $4,810, a business in Mississauga with 50 employees will receive $20,050 and a medium-sized business in Calgary with 200 employees will receive $118,200. The rebates affect smaller companies with lower emissions that don't trigger the big industrial carbon pricing system. These businesses pay the same carbon price as individuals do on things like natural gas for heat and gasoline for fleet vehicles. Big industrial companies with high amounts of greenhouse gas emissions instead pay the carbon price on a portion of their actual emissions. What the GST holiday means for consumers — and why some economists are worried Federal government can spend $46B more a year and remain sustainable over long term: PBO report At the same news conference, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland urged opposition parties to co-operate with the government so it can pass legislation to provide a GST/HST holiday on some essential goods that would start on Dec. 14 and run through Feb. 15, 2025. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the affordability measure last week as well. The federal government also plans to cut $250 cheques in spring 2025 for working Canadians who made $150,000 or less last year. In October, Parliamentary Budget Officer Yves Giroux said he estimates the federal government posted a $46.8 billion deficit for the 2023-24 fiscal year. The final tally for last year's deficit will be confirmed when the government publishes its annual public accounts report this fall. Freeland pledged a year ago to keep the deficit capped at that level, and said in her spring budget it would stay in line with the promise. The new fiscal guardrail was part of an effort to quell fears that high government spending would fuel price growth and undermine the Bank of Canada's inflation-taming efforts. Asked Monday whether the government surpassed its fiscal guardrail and when public accounts would become available for viewing, Freeland pivoted to the Conservatives, saying their filibustering has been "blocking routine Parliamentary business." "I'm glad to have this opportunity to say to the Conservatives that it is high time to stop these dilatory games and to let Parliament do its job," she said. "We do intend to publish a fall economic statement and the public accounts."LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Allowing two kickoff return touchdowns and missing an extra point all in the final few minutes added up to the Washington Commanders losing a third consecutive game in excruciating fashion. The underlying reason for this slide continuing was a problem long before that. An offense led by dynamic rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels that was among the NFL's best for a long stretch of the season put up just nine points and 169 yards for the first three-plus quarters against Dallas before falling behind 20-9 and teeing off on the Cowboys' conservative defense. “We just couldn’t really get it going,” said receiver Terry McLaurin , whose lengthy touchdown with 21 seconds left masked that he had just three catches for 16 yards through three quarters. “We’ve got to find a way to start faster and sustain drives, and that’s everybody: the whole coaching staff and the offensive players just going out there and figuring out ways that we can stay on the field.” This is not a new problem for Washington, which had a season-low 242 yards in a Nov. 10 home loss to Pittsburgh and 264 yards four days later in a defeat at Philadelphia. Since returning from a rib injury that knocked him out of a game last month, Daniels has completed just under 61% of his passes, after 75.6% over his first seven professional starts. Daniels and coach Dan Quinn have insisted this isn't about injury. The coaching staff blamed a lack of adequate practice time, but a full week of it before facing the Cowboys did not solve the problem. It is now fair to wonder if opponents have seen enough film of offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's system to figure it out. “I think teams and coordinators are going to see what other teams have success against us and try to figure out how they could incorporate that into their scheme," Daniels said after going 12 of 22 for 80 yards passing through three quarters in the Dallas game. "We’ve been in third and longer a lot these past couple games, so that’s kind of where you get into the exotic pressures and stuff like that. We’ve just got to be better on first and second downs and stay ahead of the chains.” Daniels has a point there, and it predates this losing streak. The Commanders have converted just 36% of third-down opportunities (27 for 75) over their past seven games after 52% (31 for 60) in their first five. That challenge doesn't get any easier with Tennessee coming to town Sunday. The Titans, despite being 3-8, have the second-best third-down defense in the league at 31.6%. The defense kept the Commanders in the game against Dallas, allowing just 10 points until the fourth quarter and 20 total before kickoff return touchdowns piled on to the other side of the scoreboard. Even Cooper Rush's 22-yard touchdown pass to Luke Schoonmaker with five minutes left came after a turnover that gave the Cowboys the ball at the Washington 44. The defense spending more than 35 minutes on the field certainly contributed to fatigue as play wore on. The running game that contributed to a 7-2 start has taken a hit, in part because of injuries to top back Brian Robinson Jr. The Commanders got 145 yards on the ground because Daniels had 74 on seven carries, but running backs combined for just 57. Daniels could not say how much the rushing attack stalling has contributed to the offense going stagnant. “You’ve got to be able to run the ball, keep the defense honest,” he said. "We got to execute the plays that are called in, and we didn’t do a good job of doing that.” Linebacker Frankie Luvu keeps making the case to be first-year general manager Adam Peters' best free agent signing. He and fellow offseason addition Bobby Wagner tied for a team-high eight tackles, and Luvu also knocked down three passes against Dallas. Kicker Austin Seibert going wide left on the point-after attempt that would have tied the score with 21 seconds left was his third miss of the game. He also was short on a 51-yard field goal attempt and wide left on an earlier extra point. Seibert, signed a week into the season after Cade York struggled in the opener, made 25 of 27 field goal tries and was 22 of 22 on extra points before injuring his right hip and missing the previous two games. He brushed off his health and the low snap from Tyler Ott while taking responsibility for not connecting. “I made the decision to play, and here we are,” Seibert said. “I just wasn’t striking it well. But it means a lot to me to be here with these guys, so I just want to put my best foot moving forward.” Robinson's sprained ankle and fellow running back Austin Ekeler's concussion from a late kickoff return that led to him being hospitalized for further evaluation are two major immediate concerns. Quinn said Monday that Ekeler and starting right tackle Andrew Wylie are in concussion protocol. It's unclear if Robinson will be available against Tennessee, which could mean Chris Rodriguez Jr. getting elevated from the practice squad to split carries with Jeremy McNichols. The Commanders still have not gotten cornerback Marshon Lattimore into a game since acquiring him at the trade deadline from New Orleans. Lattimore is trying to return from a hamstring injury, and the secondary could use him against Calvin Ridley, who's coming off a 93-yard performance at Houston. 17 — Handoffs to a running back against Dallas, a significant decrease from much of the season before this losing streak. The situation in the premium electric car market changed with the introduction of the Tesla Model S in 2012. The American sedan demonstrated for the first time what a car could be like if it combined speed, comfort, performance, and elegance. Nowadays, most European manufacturers, including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, present luxury electric cars. Some cars seek to maximize sophistication and luxury. Others put performance first or add a good dose of utility to the SUV body. Competition is fierce and standards are constantly rising. Experts have named the leaders in the premium electric car segment. BMW i7 It is an indicator of the growing preference for electric vehicles that the first version of the all-new BMW 7 Series flagship is the electric i7. It's not an elegant or even particularly aesthetically pleasing car, but the i7's monumental proportions are undeniably eye-catching. Inside, it's even more impressive thanks to its superbly crafted finish and stunning technology. High-quality materials are used throughout, and the sleek screens located at the top of the dashboard can be accessed via the iDrive swivel controller. For rear-seat passengers, there is the option of an incredible 31.3-inch flip-down screen that, when combined with the Bowers & Wilkins audio system, provides a cinema-like experience in the car. Thanks to all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, the big BMW is surprisingly approachable, with precise steering and firm grip. The twin-engine setup delivers 536 hp for plenty of performance. BMW iX The iX is roughly the same size as the X5 but is based on a specialized platform adapted from lightweight composite materials and mixed metals and is powered by a single electric motor per axle. The entry-level version of the BMW iX xDrive40 has a power output of 296 hp and a WLTP-certified range of 400 km. On the xDrive50, these statistics increase significantly to 516 hp and a range of 600 km, along with a 200 kW fast-charging potential. The iX M60 xDrive offers even more power and performance, but even with the lightweight platform, no iX weighs less than 2.5 tons. In a comparison test, the iX outperformed the Mercedes-Benz EQS. The Mercedes is comfortable, but the iX's isolation and ride refinement are very special indeed and make it a top luxury car. Porsche Taycan Porsche has significantly expanded the range of its electric Taycan model since the car was first launched in 2020. You can now have one or two drive motors. The car has become a competitive contender in the luxury segment with enough power to outsell all other Porsche models in the UK. The Cross Turismo's expanded cargo space and increased added versatility do not weaken its dynamic capabilities. The electric range is not the best in its class at 400 km. Mercedes-Benz EQS Built on an all-new platform (and partly in response to the loss of market share to the conventionally powered S-Class when the Tesla Model S gained success in the important North American market), the EQS is a luxury electric vehicle without compromise. The EQS makes the most of its powerful 120 kWh battery pack. The air suspension ensures high standards of insulation, comfort, and refinement. Lucid Air Few cars have caused such a stir or kept us waiting as long as the Lucid Air. For example, the top-of-the-line Dream Edition has 1111 horsepower and 1389 Nm of torque and accelerates from a standstill to 100 km per hour in a claimed 2.4 seconds. In addition, there is a giant 118 kWh battery that promises a range of 840 km without charging. And when you do need to recharge, the 300 kW fast charger means you can add 480 km in just 20 minutes. The handling, according to experts, suffers a bit from a lack of damping control, even in the firmest suspension setup. On the larger wheels, the ride is also mixed, lacking the firmness and composure typical of pace-setting luxury cars, although this improves significantly with 19-inch wheels. Air suspension is also in development, which should improve things even further. Mercedes-Benz EQC The Mercedes EQC 400 offers a combination of driver comfort and appeal, as well as first-class infotainment and navigation systems. Sharing its platform with the GLC with an internal combustion engine, the EQC has dual electric motors, torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, and a combined maximum output of 402 hp. The WLTP-confirmed range is 416 km. EQC has many driving modes. Unfortunately, both deals are for the first two months. After that, you’ll be paying the regular price which starts at $7.99 for Paramount Plus Essentials and $12.99 for Paramount Plus with SHOWTIME. Now, while the annual plans are not discounted, they still have better values than the Black Friday Deal. Paramount Plus Essentials is $59.99 per year (or $5 per month), while Paramount Plus with SHOWTIME is $119 per year (or around $10 per month). Paramount Plus is what used to be CBS All Access and now has a ton of great content available. This includes being able to watch the NFL on CBS as well as UEFA Champions League Live. Now, on plans, you’ll see ads for sports since they are live. But on Paramount Plus with SHOWTIME, it is ad-free – except for live TV. More info I'm A Celebrity viewers noticed a telling detail about Dean McCullough during the latest episode of the reality show. The campmates were tasked with riding the Fright Bus, but what caught the audience's attention was Dean's surprisingly calm demeanour during the challenge. This was in stark contrast to his previous Bushtucker trials, where he had earned the public vote five times in a row and even shouted the infamous phrase "I'm a celebrity get me out of here" twice, reports OK! . Fans took to social media to express their surprise, with one commenting: "Dean screaming the least? Is he ok?" Another viewer pointed out the discrepancy between Dean's reactions during the Fright Bus challenge and the trials, saying: "Na the difference in Dean doing the fright bus compared to the trials is actually embarrassing! Just shows how much he's been overdramatic and playing on it for the camera time/attention!". A third fan said that Dean's calmness during the Fright Bus challenge had reinforced their suspicions, writing: "Suddenly Dean has no fear.... cementing the suspicion of his dramatics being faker than that of a premier league footballer." A viewer suggested that the actions were a tactic to win over viewers, commenting: "Oh Dean has just proved all our points he was doing it all to get the votes to do the trails to get the screen time." After witnessing the campmates' ordeal on the Fright Bus, predictions are now swirling that Tulisa is likely to be chosen by the public for the upcoming Bushtucker trial, especially since Barry had to step in to help her clear off the creepy crawlies. On the show I'm A Celebrity Unpacked, it was disclosed that Maura and Jane would be the ones to take on the next Bushtucker challenge. The forthcoming task has been ominously named the Fright at the end of the Tunnel. I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX

Bears reach property tax deal in Arlington Heights — but stadium sights still set on Chicago, team saysAxios CEO Flips Out Over Elon Musk’s ‘Bulls**t’ Claim That X Users Are Replacing The MediaVan Nistelrooy has replaced Steve Cooper at the King Power Stadium and saw Jamie Vardy open the scoring after just 98 seconds. Bilal El Khannouss and Patson Daka added goals after the break to ensure the Dutchman started with three points in style. Starting with a win! 🤩 Delivered by @bcgame #LEIWHU pic.twitter.com/X90nFSbMLm — Leicester City (@LCFC) December 3, 2024 His task is to keep the Foxes in the Premier League this season and after ending a five-game winless run they moved up to 15th, four points clear of the relegation zone. West Ham’s hierarchy will have seen what impact a managerial change can have as the jury remains out on Lopetegui, with away fans making their feelings clear by chanting “You’re getting sacked in the morning”. Niclas Fullkrug scored a consolation goal at the death but it counted for nothing and forthcoming games against Wolves, Bournemouth, Brighton and Southampton could determine the Spaniard’s future. When Van Nistelrooy went to bed last night, even he would not have dreamt of his side starting as well as they did as they went ahead with less than two minutes on the clock. One of the Dutchman’s first conversations following his appointment was to take Vardy to task for breaking his record for scoring in the most consecutive Premier League games nine years ago. And the veteran striker rolled back to the years as, living on the shoulder of the West Ham defence, he raced clear from El Khannouss’ through-ball and slotted into the corner. The linesman’s flag immediately went up but a lengthy VAR review ruled Vardy had timed his run perfectly and the goal stood. Vardy could have added a second from a similar move but this time Lukasz Fabianski denied him. The Dutchman quickly learned about the frailties of his side as West Ham created a raft of chances in search of an equaliser. Jarrod Bowen forced Mads Hermansen into a stretching save when he cut in from the right before Ings’ header crashed into the post and Max Kilman slipped at the crucial point from the rebound. Bowen, a constant threat, sent a ball across face of goal which evaded everyone before the England international was denied by a reflex save from the busy Hermansen. The Danish goalkeeper needed to be alert to tip over Mohammed Kudus’ deflected effort early in the second half before he was saved by the referee’s whistle after after his attempted punch went into his own goal, Tomas Soucek the man penalised. Leicester remained a threat on the counter-attack and that is how they doubled their lead just after the hour. Kasey McAteer was set clear down the left and his ball inside was perfect for El Khannouss to find the bottom corner from 15 yards. It was almost three as Fabianski produced an acrobatic save from Wilfred Ndidi’s header before Leicester needed a heroic piece of defending to keep their 2-0 lead intact. Crysencio Summerville bundled the ball goalwards and it was heading over the line until Conor Coady adjusted his feet and poked it clear. The Foxes, who also had a goal from substitute Bobby De Cordova-Reid chalked off by VAR, wrapped things up in the 90th minute when Daka broke clear and emphatically converted into the roof of the net. West Ham did get on the scoresheet when Fullkrug headed a corner home, but the game was already done.Jayden Daniels and the offense stalling have the Commanders on a three-game losing streak

Here are some things to know about Turner: From professional football to politics Turner grew up in a Dallas suburb, Richardson, and graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. During offseasons, he worked as an intern then-Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif. After Turner retired in 2004, he worked full time for the congressman. In 2006, Turner ran unsuccessfully as a Republican in California’s 50th Congressional District. Turner joined the Texas House in 2013 as part of a large crop of tea party-supported lawmakers. Trump credited Turner with “helping to lead an Unprecedented Effort that Transformed our Country’s most distressed communities.” The mission of the council was to coordinate with various federal agencies to attract investment to so-called “Opportunity Zones," which were economically depressed areas eligible to be used for the federal tax incentives. The role of HUD HUD is responsible for addressing the nation’s housing needs. It also is charged with fair housing laws and oversees housing for the poorest Americans, sheltering more than 4.3 million low-income families through public housing, rental subsidy and voucher programs. The agency, with a budget of tens of billions of dollars, runs a multitude of programs that do everything from reducing homelessness to promoting homeownership. It also funds the construction of affordable housing and provides vouchers that allow low income families pay for housing in the private market. During the campaign, Trump focused mostly on the prices of housing, not public housing. He railed against the high cost of housing and said he could make it more affordable by cracking down on illegal immigration and reducing inflation. He also said he would work to reduce regulations on home construction and make some federal land available for residential construction.

Article content When the first Austin Powers movie was filmed in 1997, the Jaguar he drove on screen was thirty years old, just enough of an anachronism to be parodied by painting a huge Union Jack over it. This explains why the film is funny. Today, we are nearly three decades from when that film was first released in theatres. This explains why your knees hurt. Thus, seeing the actual Jaguar from the movie coming up for auction in January is less about nostalgia for the 1960s spy movies that Mike Myers was skewering; and more about a time capsule back to when your phone was only for phoning people. The 1990s! What a heady place to re-visit. Did we really go nuts for a floppy-haired, hairy-chested, perpetually bumbling secret agent with teeth like a picket fence in a hurricane? Box-office results for all three movies of – Dr. Evil voice – one billion dollars says we did. Well, nearly half-a-billion. The Powers franchise was bigger than anyone remembers, and you’d have to think today’s young audiences would be completely bewildered by it. However, if you’re of a certain age, it was pretty fun, and eminently quotable. Now you can get your hands on a piece of that franchise. This 1967 Jaguar E-Type, dubbed the “Shaguar,” is coming up for auction at Mecum’s Kissimmee, Florida event early next year. It is the only example used in filming across all three films – due to a lack of funds, there were no stunt doubles constructed – and was driven by Mike Myers and his various leading ladies. The car was apparently acquired by someone tied to the studio right after filming wrapped on the third movie, and was promptly treated to a restoration; it’s been in private hands ever since. Shown off by Jaguar Land Rover from time to time, it’s a decent example of an E-Type underneath, with the 4.2L inline-six and a manual gearbox. However, the draw here really is for the Austin Powers fan. It’d be a fun addition to a collection of either significant Jaguars, or movie cars. Head over to Mecum’s site to check out their presentation, and mark your calendar to watch what kind of money this thing will fetch—a not-so-nearly-famous example is worth about CDN$136,000 in driver condition, per insurer Hagerty, but we expect this one to go for quite a bit more. Yeah, baby! ( Really ? We used to say things like that?) The Shaguar goes up on the block on January 18, 2025. Clark, 39, was shocked that she was asked to pay that amount during this second prenatal visit. Normally, patients receive the bill after insurance has paid its part, and for pregnant women that’s usually only when the pregnancy ends. It would be months before the office filed the claim with her health insurer. Clark said she felt stuck. The Cleveland, Tennessee, obstetrics practice was affiliated with a birthing center where she wanted to deliver. Plus, she and her husband had been wanting to have a baby for a long time. And Clark was emotional, because just weeks earlier her mother had died. “You’re standing there at the window, and there’s people all around, and you’re trying to be really nice,” recalled Clark, through tears. “So, I paid it.” On online baby message boards and other social media forums , pregnant women say they are being asked by their providers to pay out-of-pocket fees earlier than expected. The practice is legal, but patient advocacy groups call it unethical. Medical providers argue that asking for payment up front ensures they get compensated for their services. How frequently this happens is hard to track because it is considered a private transaction between the provider and the patient. Therefore, the payments are not recorded in insurance claims data and are not studied by researchers. Patients, medical billing experts, and patient advocates say the billing practice causes unexpected anxiety at a time of already heightened stress and financial pressure. Estimates can sometimes be higher than what a patient might ultimately owe and force people to fight for refunds if they miscarry or the amount paid was higher than the final bill. Up-front payments also create hurdles for women who may want to switch providers if they are unhappy with their care. In some cases, they may cause women to forgo prenatal care altogether, especially in places where few other maternity care options exist. It’s “holding their treatment hostage,” said Caitlin Donovan, a senior director at the Patient Advocate Foundation . Medical billing and women’s health experts believe OB-GYN offices adopted the practice to manage the high cost of maternity care and the way it is billed for in the U.S. When a pregnancy ends, OB-GYNs typically file a single insurance claim for routine prenatal care, labor, delivery, and, often, postpartum care. That practice of bundling all maternity care into one billing code began three decades ago, said Lisa Satterfield, senior director of health and payment policy at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists . But such bundled billing has become outdated, she said. Previously, pregnant patients had been subject to copayments for each prenatal visit, which might lead them to skip crucial appointments to save money. But the Affordable Care Act now requires all commercial insurers to fully cover certain prenatal services. Plus, it’s become more common for pregnant women to switch providers, or have different providers handle prenatal care, labor, and delivery — especially in rural areas where patient transfers are common. Some providers say prepayments allow them to spread out one-time payments over the course of the pregnancy to ensure that they are compensated for the care they do provide, even if they don’t ultimately deliver the baby. “You have people who, unfortunately, are not getting paid for the work that they do,” said Pamela Boatner, who works as a midwife in a Georgia hospital. While she believes women should receive pregnancy care regardless of their ability to pay, she also understands that some providers want to make sure their bill isn’t ignored after the baby is delivered. New parents might be overloaded with hospital bills and the costs of caring for a new child, and they may lack income if a parent isn’t working, Boatner said. In the U.S., having a baby can be expensive. People who obtain health insurance through large employers pay an average of nearly $3,000 out-of-pocket for pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care, according to the Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker . In addition, many people are opting for high-deductible health insurance plans, leaving them to shoulder a larger share of the costs. Of the 100 million U.S. people with health care debt, 12% attribute at least some of it to maternity care, according to a 2022 KFF poll . Families need time to save money for the high costs of pregnancy, childbirth, and child care, especially if they lack paid maternity leave, said Joy Burkhard , CEO of the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, a Los Angeles-based policy think tank. Asking them to prepay “is another gut punch,” she said. “What if you don’t have the money? Do you put it on credit cards and hope your credit card goes through?” Calculating the final costs of childbirth depends on multiple factors, such as the timing of the pregnancy , plan benefits, and health complications, said Erin Duffy , a health policy researcher at the University of Southern California’s Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics. The final bill for the patient is unclear until a health plan decides how much of the claim it will cover, she said. But sometimes the option to wait for the insurer is taken away. During Jamie Daw’s first pregnancy in 2020, her OB-GYN accepted her refusal to pay in advance because Daw wanted to see the final bill. But in 2023, during her second pregnancy, a private midwifery practice in New York told her that since she had a high-deductible plan, it was mandatory to pay $2,000 spread out with monthly payments. Daw, a health policy researcher at Columbia University, delivered in September 2023 and got a refund check that November for $640 to cover the difference between the estimate and the final bill. “I study health insurance,” she said. “But, as most of us know, it’s so complicated when you’re really living it.” While the Affordable Care Act requires insurers to cover some prenatal services, it doesn’t prohibit providers from sending their final bill to patients early. It would be a challenge politically and practically for state and federal governments to attempt to regulate the timing of the payment request, said Sabrina Corlette , a co-director of the Center on Health Insurance Reforms at Georgetown University. Medical lobbying groups are powerful and contracts between insurers and medical providers are proprietary. Because of the legal gray area, Lacy Marshall , an insurance broker at Rapha Health and Life in Texas, advises clients to ask their insurer if they can refuse to prepay their deductible. Some insurance plans prohibit providers in their network from requiring payment up front. If the insurer says they can refuse to pay up front, Marshall said, she tells clients to get established with a practice before declining to pay, so that the provider can’t refuse treatment. Then she called her OB-GYN’s office and asked for a refund. “I got my spine back,” said Clark, who had previously worked at a health insurer and a medical office. She got an initial check for about half the $960 she originally paid. In August, Clark was sent to the hospital after her blood pressure spiked. A high-risk pregnancy specialist — not her original OB-GYN practice — delivered her son, Peter, prematurely via emergency cesarean section at 30 weeks. It was only after she resolved most of the bills from the delivery that she received the rest of her refund from the other OB-GYN practice. This final check came in October, just days after Clark brought Peter home from the hospital, and after multiple calls to the office. She said it all added stress to an already stressful period. “Why am I having to pay the price as a patient?” she said. “I’m just trying to have a baby.” ©2024 KFF Health News. Caitlin Clark was announced on Tuesday as TIME's Athlete of the Year . While she spoke about her initial success in the WNBA and her transition from college to the pros during an in-depth interview with the magazine, Clark also spoke about her Taylor Swift fandom. The Indiana Fever star admitted to attending consecutive concerts on the heralded "Eras tour" at Lucas Oil Stadium and was bombarded with friendship bracelets from other "Swifties." Swift left Clark with four separate bags of tour merchandise that the 14-time Grammy-award-winning artist indicated were from " Trav and I." The singer also expressed that she's excited to attend a Fever game sometime next year. Caitlin Clark reveals truth about Angel Reese relationship and her response to WNBA gesture Chennedy Carter lets her game do the talking with WNBA contract decision looming “People are just going crazy that I’m there,” Clark said of her experience at the concert. “I thought people would be so in their own world, ready to see Taylor. And it was just completely the opposite.” Swift has had more crossover into the sports world in recent years, in part thanks to her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce . This season, she attended the first six Chiefs home games at Arrowhead Stadium. Swift had to miss Kansas City's most recent home game , a nervy 19-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night, as she wrapped up the Eras Tour in Vancouver. She's also attended the US Open and the opening game of the ALCS Playoffs between the Cleveland Guardians - Kelce's alleged favorite team - and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs return home in two weeks when they take on the Houston Texans on December 21, the team's last contest at Arrowhead Stadium this season. With the Eras Tour over, Swift would be able to attend. The Fever start their 2025 season with a home meeting against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on May 17th of next year. Clark will line up for new coach Stephanie White next season. She led the Connecticut Sun the last two seasons after a stint at Vanderbilt University. The Fever may look to strengthen their team this offseason even though star Kelsey Mitchell is a free agent. Indiana owns the eight eight pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.

Mother orca and her children make 'grocery shopping' trip near downtown VancouverBy David Shepardson and Nora Eckert (Reuters) -General Motors said on Tuesday it will end robotaxi development at its majority-owned, money-losing Cruise business, a blow to the ambitions of the largest U.S. automaker which had made the advanced technology unit a top priority. The Detroit-based car company said it would no longer fund work on self-driving robotaxis "given the considerable time and resources that would be needed to scale the business, along with an increasingly competitive robotaxi market." The automaker has invested more than $10 billion in Cruise since 2016. Cruise will be folded into its group working on driver assistance technology. The move comes on the heels of GM scaling back plans for electric vehicles, selling its stake in one of its joint venture battery plants and restructuring its China business, leaving the company more focused on its profitable business of making gasoline-powered pickup trucks and other large vehicles. GM shares rose 3.2% in extended trading on Tuesday. In 2023, GM CEO Mary Barra said the Cruise business could generate $50 billion in annual revenue by 2030 but on Tuesday said the business was expendable. "You've got to really understand the cost of running a robotaxi fleet, which is fairly significant, and again, not our core business," Barra said on an analyst call. GM expects the restructuring will cut spending from about $2 billion to $1 billion after the plan is completed by the end of June. Barra declined to say how many Cruise employees could be moved over to GM. COSTLY BUSINESS Rivals still in the emerging robotaxi industry include deep-pocketed developers such as Alphabet's Waymo, Baidu and Tesla. But some of GM’s competitors have already stopped funding autonomous driving businesses, citing the costs and difficulties involved in developing such sophisticated technology. In October 2022, Ford Motor began winding down its Argo AI operation that was part-funded by Volkswagen. Ford is still working on advanced driver assistance systems in-house different from the fully autonomous ones previously being developed at Argo AI. Still, Tesla CEO Elon Musk - a close adviser to President-elect Donald Trump - is bullish on the future of robotaxis, and Trump is expected to make it easier to deploy self-driving vehicles nationally. Waymo last week said it would expand its autonomous ride-hailing services to Miami. Last month, the company opened its ride-hailing services to everyone in Los Angeles, and in October it closed a $5.6 billion funding round led by Alphabet. Last month, Cruise admitted to submitting a false report to influence a federal investigation and agreed to pay a $500,000 criminal fine as part of a deferred prosecution agreement. The Justice Department said Cruise failed to disclose key details of an October 2023 crash to federal regulators in which one of its robotaxis in San Francisco struck and seriously injured a pedestrian. GM paid a substantial settlement to the woman who was injured and it faces continuing scrutiny from U.S. auto safety regulators. GM in July said it would halt development of a planned robotaxi that would not have a steering wheel or other human controls after it made a series of dramatic cuts following the 2023 crash including firing many top executives and laying offmore than a quarter of its employees. In 2022, GM filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration seeking permission to deploy up to 2,500 self-driving Origin vehicles annually without human controls such as brake pedals or mirrors. GM in recent months withdrew the petition, a person briefed on the matter said. Jamiya Neal finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and four blocks to lead host Creighton over UNLV 83-65 on Saturday in Omaha, Neb. Creighton was without star Pop Isaacs, who was ruled out for the season on Saturday morning after undergoing surprise hip surgery. It was a startling turn, considering Isaacs led Creighton with 27 points in Wednesday's win over No. 1 Kansas. Neal and Steven Ashworth (17 points) anchored the backcourt in Isaacs' absence, combining to make 13-of-20 shots from the field. Neal made 7 of his 10 and Ashworth 6 of 10. Isaac Traudt also stepped up, making five 3-pointers off the bench to account for all 15 of his points. Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 12 points, making 4-of-5 attempts from the field, and added six rebounds. Creighton opened the second half on a 10-0 run, extending its lead to 49-27 before UNLV mustered an answer. Creighton made 10 consecutive shots early in the second half, extending its lead to a 62-41 with 12:20 remaining. Dedan Thomas Jr. paced UNLV with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting, making 1 of 4 attempts from 3-point range. Jailen Bedford added a team-high 20 points for the Rebels on 8-of-15 shooting, scoring 17 points in the second half. Julian Rishwain added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, but UNLV's second leading scorer for the season, Jeremiah Cherry, was limited to just four points in 16 minutes after early foul trouble. Creighton shot a resounding 63.3 percent from the field for the game, including going 10-of-20 from beyond the arc. Creighton outscored UNLV 38-34 in the paint and outrebounded them 34-21. UNLV finished the game shooting 42.2 percent field, making 7-of-21 attempts from distance. --Field Level MediaATLANTA (AP) — Georgia quarterback Carson Beck will not return after he was hit on his throwing hand on the final play of an ugly first half Saturday in the Southeastern Conference championship game against Texas. Beck was hit by outside linebacker Trey Moore, forcing a fumble recovered by Anthony Hill Jr., who then lost the ball on an errant attempt to extend the play with a lateral as time expired. Beck was one of the last players to return to the field following halftime. He was holding his helmet but did not warm up remained on the sideline as backup Gunner Stockton led the offense to its first touchdown on the Bulldogs' first drive of the second half. Georgia coach Kirby Smart told ESPN Beck would not return to the game and said he had no details on the hand injury. Beck had the right arm wrapped in ice on the Georgia bench. No. 2 Texas outgained No. 5 Georgia 260-54 but led only 6-3 at halftime. The Bulldogs netted minus-2 yards rushing and Beck completed 7 of 13 passes for 56 yards. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” Carter, who lived longer than any U.S. president, had been receiving hospice care, without medical intervention, since February 2023 so he could be with his family after what the Carter Center described as a series of short hospital stays for undisclosed ailments. He is survived by his four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife, Rosalynn, had been diagnosed with dementia in May 2023 and died Nov. 19 at age 96. "Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian," President Joe Biden said in a statement. "Over six decades, we had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well." Biden was the first sitting senator to endorse Carter for president in 1976, insisting the moderate Southern Democrat was best positioned to defeat incumbent Gerald Ford. Carter would live to see Biden himself elected to the presidency, although he was too ill to attend Biden’s 2021 inauguration. He would famously go on to fulfill his pledge to vote for Biden’s Democratic vice president, Kamala Harris, in October. "To all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning – the good life – study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility," Biden added in his statement. "He showed that we are great nation because we are a good people – decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong." Carter's 43-year post-presidency was the longest in American history. And while his four years in the White House were defined by national and international problems that he was unable to solve, he used his time out of office to work on many charitable projects, fight disease, monitor elections abroad and undertake peace missions that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. While Carter had what many considered a disappointing presidency, he earned back the respect and affection of people the world over for his work as a humanitarian, human rights advocate and hands-on builder of homes for the needy. The man voters eagerly discarded after one term went on to be considered America’s best former president. Carter once told reporters that, while the presidency was his most important political experience, his work with the Carter Center in Atlanta, an organization named after him and devoted to research and humanitarian activism, was more "personally gratifying." Through the center, Carter said, he could directly help poor people around the world. His post-presidency was impressive in other ways, as Carter demonstrated a deeply felt commitment to his Christian faith and his community. Even though other former presidents cashed in on their time in office with paid speeches and stints on corporate boards – and many never returned to their pre-presidential communities – Carter was different. He made money from his many books, but he wasn't overly materialistic. He brought attention to a now-well-known project called Habitat for Humanity, which builds houses for poor people. The former president and his wife famously participated personally in many building projects. Born James Earl Carter Jr. – and known all his life as Jimmy – the former president came from modest beginnings. He hailed from Plains (population about 600) where his father, James Earl Carter, was a successful farmer and small businessman who for a while ran a grocery store. His mother, the former Bessie Lillian Gordy, was a nurse. Four years after Carter was born, the family moved for a while to nearby Archery, Georgia, even smaller than Plains. Jimmy had three siblings, Gloria, Ruth and Billy, and their father required hard work from all of them around the farm and in his other enterprises. Carter was studious as a boy, also very patriotic and family-oriented. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1946 and married Rosalynn, his sweetheart from home, the following month. He was assigned to the U.S. submarine fleet, serving aboard the USS Pomfret as an electronics officer among other assignments. It was during his Navy career that Carter, training for a role as engineer on a nuclear submarine, was involved with mitigating an incident at a nuclear reactor in Canada. The government of Canada describes the 1952 incident at Chalk River Laboratories in Ontario as “the world’s first nuclear reactor accident,” saying the facility experienced “mechanical problems and operator error that led to overheating fuel rods and significant damage.” Carter was widely credited with helping prevent an accident from spiraling into a disaster. After his father died in 1953, Carter gave up his promising career in the Navy and returned to Plains to help run the family businesses, especially the peanut farm. He won two terms in the state Senate and was elected governor of Georgia as a moderate Democrat in 1970. Serving one term, he audaciously decided to run for president in the 1976 election, casting himself as a maverick, a truth-teller and a Washington outsider. He surprised the political pros by winning the Democratic nomination and narrowly defeating Republican incumbent Ford in the popular vote 50.1% to 48% and 297-240 in the Electoral College. But Carter will always be known for his post-presidency. Mark Peterson | Corbis | Getty Images Former President Carter volunteers at a Habitat for Humanity construction site in 1992. After the White House, he went back to Plains. He wrote his books there, and for years he and Rosalynn made a habit of pedaling their bicycles around the town for recreation. He seemed to know all the local merchants and helped his community by volunteering on community projects and in other ways. He worshiped and taught Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, sometimes mowed the lawn there and tidied up after services. There was much for him to forgive in the treatment he received from his critics while he was president, but he tried to move beyond all that. Once an outsider who never fit in with the Washington political arena he struggled to navigate as president, Carter later became the subject of admiration and affection by some of the most prominent figures in American politics. Words of tribute and support came from both sides of the political aisle when the Carter family announced Feb. 18, 2023, that the former president would enter home hospice care for his final challenge – facing a cancer that had spread from his liver to his brain and that he knew amounted to a death sentence. Georgia politicians, from Republican Gov. Brian Kemp to Democratic Sen. Rafael Warnock, issued statements of support. Former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, tweeted on President’s Day 2023 that he was thinking of Carter – almost 50 years after he first declared his candidacy for the nation’s highest office in December 1974. In a statement after Carter's death, former President Barack Obama and first Lady Michelle Obama lauded him for "the longest, and most impactful, post-presidency in American history." "Elected in the shadow of Watergate, Jimmy Carter promised voters that he would always tell the truth. And he did – advocating for the public good, consequences be damned. He believed some things were more important than reelection – things like integrity, respect, and compassion. Because Jimmy Carter believed, as deeply as he believed anything, that we are all created in God’s image," they said in a statement. Carter elevated his national profile back then with a promise not to lie and a pledge to bring integrity and a common touch to the White House after the imperial reign of Richard Nixon, who resigned amid the Watergate scandal. Ford, as vice president, succeeded Nixon in office but didn't fully connect with the American people despite his personal decency and many years as a distinguished member of the House of Representatives from Michigan. Once in office, Carter did his best to limit the trappings of the imperial presidency. He ordered his staff not to have a band play the martial anthem "Hail to the Chief" when he entered a room. He wore cardigans to show his casual approach and to make the point that he had lowered the thermostats in the White House to save energy. For a while, he carried his own hand luggage aboard Air Force One when traveling. He held town meetings to stay in touch with everyday people. He advocated energy conservation and less reliance on foreign oil. And Americans liked their new president – initially. But as the nation's problems intensified, the public turned on him. The economy got worse. Inflation rose. So did unemployment. Gasoline shortages resulted in huge lines at filling stations across the country and unsettled millions. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, a signal to many that Carter wasn't perceived as a strong leader internationally and could be defied by America's adversaries. In response, Carter announced a boycott of the Olympic Summer Games in Moscow in 1980, a protest that saw support from a significant number of American allies. READ: Carter concluded that Americans were suffering from an epic loss of confidence. At one point in 1979, he canceled a major energy speech and secluded himself at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains. For eight days, he met privately with advisers there and contemplated what to do next. The result was what critics called "the malaise speech." He didn't actually use the word "malaise" but argued that the country was suffering from a profound "crisis of confidence" that damaged the nation's "heart and soul." His critics said Carter was really blaming the country for his own flawed leadership. When he fired half his Cabinet a few days later, he seemed hopelessly adrift. He never recovered politically. "Carter's eventual difficulties with a heavily Democratic Congress sprang as much from his personality and cultural divides within the Democratic Party, as from ideological differences between Carter and his fellow partisans," wrote political scientist Alvin Felzenberg in "The Leaders We Deserved." "Proud that he had won the presidency, without having had to court party power brokers or representatives of special interests, Carter took office believing he owed nothing to the political establishment that he had defeated on the way to the nomination." And his administration scored some successes, at least in retrospect. During 1978, his second year in office, he won Senate approval for transferring control of the Panama Canal to Panama. And he negotiated the Camp David Accords, a major peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. Carter argued in favor of energy conservation, a stance that was not very popular at the time but that resonates much better today. And he made human rights a cornerstone of American foreign policy – a goal that remains widely admired, even though his critics said he was naive and impractical at the time. In one of the worst setbacks to his presidency, Islamic extremists seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and held 53 Americans hostage for more than a year. Carter seemed powerless to get them released. When he ordered a rescue mission that failed miserably, his popularity declined even further. In 1980, he suffered a shattering defeat in his bid for reelection, losing to Republican challenger Ronald Reagan by an overwhelming margin and winning just six states and the District of Columbia. He was hurt and embarrassed by this repudiation, and it took him a long time to put the memory behind him. He was particularly proud of having avoided a war during his presidency. And he took comfort in having led the diplomacy that resulted in the freeing of the Iranian hostages, although it happened by design on the very day that Reagan was sworn in as president in January 1981 – too late for Carter to get credit for it. Reagan supporters said the hostages were freed because the Iranian leaders were afraid of what Reagan would do if the crisis persisted. In the decades after his presidency, Carter made a point of tracking political prisoners and working behind the scenes to help secure their release. In 2010 at the age of 85, he traveled to North Korea to secure the release of Aijalon Gomes, who was imprisoned for entering into North Korea from China for what is believed to have been missionary purposes. In a sign of the enduring esteem in which Carter was held, North Korea said it would release Gomes if the former president traveled personally to retrieve him. The final truth about Jimmy Carter was that he concluded, as did so many others, that his real legacy was not being a good politician or a good president but being a good man. There will be public observances in honor of the former president in Atlanta and Washington, according to the Carter Center, followed by a private interment in Plains. The final arrangements for his state funeral are still pending. Former U.S. News political writers Susan Milligan and Kenneth T. Walsh contributed to this report.

As usual with Trump, it’s hard to isolate a particular falsehood, but we focused on four — two having to do with immigration, one on tariffs and another on the unemployment rate. His running-mate, JD Vance, also landed on the list (not for the first time) for an immigration-related claim that Trump echoed in a presidential debate. In fact, five of the 12 claims below relate to illegal immigration — showing it was a potent issue in the election season. President Joe Biden merited two spots, for a false claim on the inflation rate and for a roundup of his unverified claims about his life (this is a perennial). Biden’s flip-flop on pardoning his son Hunter earned a bonus award. This list has no particular order. President-elect Donald Trump. Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post “The Harris-Biden administration says they don’t have any money [for hurricane relief]. ... They spent it all on illegal migrants. ... They stole the FEMA money just like they stole it from a bank, so they could give it to their illegal immigrants that they want to have vote for them.” — President-elect Donald Trump, Oct. 3 Trump sought to weaponize Hurricane Helene relief efforts, accusing the Biden administration of failing to provide adequate assistance. As part of his critique, he claimed there was no money available for hurricane relief because it was spent already to handle the surge of migrants at the southern border. This was false: Money was not running short, and the Biden administration did not spend FEMA disaster money on migrants. What’s even richer is that when Trump was president, he did exactly what he claimed Biden did — funding migrant programs with FEMA disaster aid. In 2019, the Trump administration, in the middle of hurricane season, told Congress that it was taking $271 million from DHS programs, including $155 million from the disaster fund, to pay for immigration detention space and temporary hearing locations for asylum seekers who had been forced to wait in Mexico. Sen. Katie Boyd Britt (R-Alabama). Melina Mara/The Washington Post “I spoke to a woman who shared her story with me. She had been sex trafficked by the cartels starting at the age of 12 .... President Biden’s border policies are a disgrace.” — Sen. Katie Boyd Britt (R-Alabama), March 7 In the centerpiece of the Republican response to State of the Union, Britt told a long story about a victim of sex trafficking who she suggested was recently abused in the United States and suffered because of President Biden’s policies. But Biden had nothing to do with the travails of Karla Jacinto Romero, later identified as the person Britt referenced in the speech. In fact, Jacinto was never trafficked to the United States; she worked in Mexican brothels during the George W. Bush administration. Vice President-elect JD Vance. Allison Robbert for The Washington Post “Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country. Where is our border czar?” — Vice President-elect JD Vance, Sept. 9 Vance sparked one of the oddest controversies of the campaign season by falsely claiming that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating pets — a tweet inspired by a false rumor on a Facebook post about migrants eating cats. His running-mate piled on during his Sept. 10 debate with Vice President Kamala Harris: “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.” Soon after, bomb threats repeatedly forced the evacuation of schools and government offices in the city. Amid the backlash, Vance doubled down, insisting he had raised legitimate issues that were ignored or belittled by the media. But Ohio officials said the claims of pet-eating migrants were not true. President Joe Biden. Allison Robbert for The Washington Post Inflation “was at 9 percent when I came in and it’s now down around 3 percent.” — President Joe Biden, May 14 Inflation was an albatross for Democrats in this election year. After decades of stable prices — inflation of about 2 percent a year — the sudden increase early in President Joe Biden’s term was a shock, both for consumers and policymakers. Inflation, as measured by the year-over-year percentage change in the consumer price index, spiked to a 9 percent annual rate in June 2022 — the highest level in 43 years. By Election Day, it had fallen below 3 percent, but that was not good enough for many Americans. Biden tried to explain that inflation was largely the fault of the coronavirus pandemic, not his policies, and that his administration has made strides in reducing it. But in doing so, he was sloppy in his phrasing. He flatly has said inflation was 9 percent when he became president — when it was actually 1.4 percent. Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump speaks Oct. 1 at campaign event at Discovery World in Milwaukee. AP photo “Over 13,000, the exact number’s 13,099, convicted illegal, alien murderers are now on the loose.” — Trump, Oct. 1 Illegal immigration surged during the Biden administration, and Trump made many false claims about the issue during his campaign. This statement — which became a standard line in his speeches — was especially egregious. Trump twisted a report on the number of noncitizens with criminal convictions that were not detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to make it sound like they had been released under Biden. But the data went back 40 years. Most of these killers are in some sort of detention (just not ICE), and have been since before Trump was president. President Joe Biden, with his fingers crossed, speaks to reporters Nov. 26 after being asked a question about a Gaza ceasefire, at the White House in Washington. AP photo Biden, like many politicians, likes to tell stories — stories in which he tries to connect his own life with his audiences’, and that make up an essential part of his persona. But throughout his career, Biden’s propensity to exaggerate or embellish tales about his life have led to doubts about his truthfulness. That hasn’t changed in his last year as president. He claimed “I used to drive an 18-wheeler” — not true, but an amalgam of driving a school bus in college and being a passenger on a 47,000-pound cargo truck. He said he was a list of 10 most eligible bachelors; no such list can be found. He said he was the first in his family to go to college — but evidence suggests his father did. And he claimed he was the state runner-up in scoring in high school football; he was in fifth place. Jesse Watters appears on Fox News “The Five” in New York on Oct. 10, 2019. AP photo “Tyson Foods has its eyes on a different class of workers. The company is now offering new jobs to asylum seekers in other states .... They’re firing Americans and offering perks to illegals.” — Fox News prime-time host Jesse Watters, March 14 Watters put Tyson Foods, the nation’s largest meat-packer, in the spotlight. With his platform on Fox News, he generated a firestorm on the right by claiming that Tyson was firing workers in Perry, Iowa, “one of the great American suburbs,” and hiring undocumented immigrants elsewhere in the country. An investment fund that claims it invests only in companies with conservative values earned headlines by announcing it had divested its Tyson stock. But Watters misleadingly connected two unrelated events — in a textbook example of how events taken out of context can be weaponized for political purposes. FILE – Shipping containers are stacked at a port in Tianjin, China, Jan. 16, 2023. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein, File) “A tariff is a tax on a foreign country. That’s the way it is, whether you like it or not. A lot of people like to say it’s a tax on us. No, no, no. It’s a tax on a foreign country. It’s a tax on a country that’s ripping us off and stealing our jobs. And it’s a tax that doesn’t affect our country.” — Trump, Aug. 17 Trump has said he will impose an across-the-board tariff on all imported products. But in making the case for his policy, he repeated the false claim he made often during his first term as president — that the entire tariff is paid by a foreign country. Economists do not debate this fact; they agree that tariffs — essentially a tax on domestic consumption — are paid by importers, such as U.S. companies, which in turn pass on most or all the costs to consumers or producers who may use imported materials in their products. Even an economist recommended by the Trump campaign said a 10 percent tariff would increase prices for consumers. In this courtroom sketch, defendant Alexander Smirnov speaks Feb. 26 in Federal court in Los Angeles. William T. Robles via AP When House Republicans prepared to impeach President Biden (remember that?), the star witness was supposed to be a confidential FBI source who alleged that Biden and his son Hunter Biden had each been paid $5 million to oust a Ukrainian prosecutor and protect a Ukrainian energy company that placed Hunter on its board. The source’s allegations were discovered because of a project launched by then-Attorney General William P. Barr soon after Trump was impeached for the first time. The FBI, however, decided the claims were not worth pursuing. Then-Rep. James Comer (R-Kentucky) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) publicly released the FBI’s 2017 interview with the source, forcing the reevaluation. Investigators determined he had lied, even when given a chance to recant, and Alexander Smirnov was arrested in February when he landed in Las Vegas. The Biden impeachment effort quickly collapsed. Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump during a Jan. 21 campaign stop in Rochester, N.H. AP photo “We had the best unemployment rates ever. And they were real unemployment, not like you have today where nobody’s working and they consider it to be.” — Trump, Jan. 21 Trump rode to victory in 2024 in part because of Americans’ dissatisfaction with the economy, especially inflation. The unemployment rate, however, was a bright spot — the lowest numbers in 70 years. So Trump reached back to the playbook he used in the 2016 election, when the economy was also on an upswing — suggesting the unemployment numbers are fake. That was false. And naturally he falsely claimed that he had the best unemployment rate ever — when in fact Biden beat him. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pennsylvania). Melina Mara/The Washington Post “McCormick’s promised the richest people in America a massive tax break. To pay for it, he’s made clear he’ll slash your Medicare and Social Security and cut Medicaid for nursing home care.” — Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pennsylvania), Oct. 10 The Senate race between Casey, the incumbent, and former hedge fund manager Dave McCormick was one of the closest in the nation. In an ad, Casey walked out of a bank vault as he complained that McCormick’s “billionaire buddies” have spent $150 million attacking him. Then he did something unusual — he directly attacked McCormick as having “made clear he’ll slash your Medicare and Social Security and cut Medicaid for nursing home care.” Usually, negative ads use voice-overs or text to make incendiary claims as a way to shield the candidate from possible fact checks. McCormick had said no such thing, and Casey’s campaign had no evidence to back up the claim. The ad did not seem to help Casey, who lost the race by about 15,000 votes out of 7 million cast. Rep. Ted Lieu (D-California). Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post “Something I’ve heard that doesn’t seem to be being covered are the Epstein files. These files were released. And, like, Donald Trump is sort of all over this.” — Rep. Ted Lieu (D-California), July 9 Florida Circuit Judge Luis Delgado unsealed nearly 200 pages of grand jury testimony related to the 2006 Florida case involving disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was alleged to have raped teenage girls. Trump’s name was not mentioned in any of the transcripts, but that did not stop Lieu from relying on dubious social media posts to claim that there was something about Trump in the documents. “One of the highest trending hashtags on Twitter right now is about Trump and Epstein,” he told reporters. But when we explored what was available in the public record, we found no credible allegation had emerged to connect Trump to any of Epstein’s crimes. President Joe Biden and son Hunter Biden walk Nov. 29 in downtown Nantucket Mass. AP photo On June 13, Biden was emphatic: “I’m extremely proud of my son Hunter ... I’m not going to do anything. I said I’d abide by the jury decision, and I will do that. And I will not pardon him.” Less than six months later, there was the flip-flop: The president not only pardoned his son for his conviction on three felony gun charges, three felony tax offenses and six misdemeanor tax offenses — he issued a sweeping pardon that absolved Hunter Biden of any possible federal crimes he might have committed between 2014 and 2024. As we reported, the arguments he marshaled in defense of a pardon could have been made back when he firmly stated that he would not pardon his son. He also never addressed the fact that he once pledged not to pardon his son — a clear but unacknowledged “flip-flop” from a previously held position. We invite you to add your comments. Researchers launch “moonshot” to cure blindness through eye transplantsElon Musk came to DC to lots of fanfare. But he said surprisingly little of substanceBEIRUT — Insurgents’ stunning march across Syria accelerated Saturday with news that they had reached the gates of the capital and that government forces had abandoned the central city of Homs. The government denied rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The loss of Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Assad. It stands at an important intersection between Damascus and Syria’s coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader’s base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria’s third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. The capture of Homs is a major victory for insurgents, who have already seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama, as well as large parts of the south, in a lightning offensive that began Nov. 27. Analysts said Homs falling into rebel hands would be a game-changer. The rebels’ moves around Damascus, reported by the monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. For the first time in the country’s long-running civil war, the government now has control of only three of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Latakia and Tartus. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. In their push to overthrow Assad’s government, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. The rapid rebel gains, coupled with the lack of support from Assad’s erstwhile allies, posed the most serious threat to his rule since the start of the war. The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country is Assad’s chief international backer, said he feels “sorry for the Syrian people.” In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands went to Syria’s border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those still open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a yearslong siege. The U.N. said it was moving noncritical staff outside the country as a precaution. Syria’s state media denied social media rumors that Assad left the country, saying he is performing his duties in Damascus. He has had little, if any, help from his allies. Russia is busy with its war in Ukraine. Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad’s forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media that that the United States should avoid engaging militarily in Syria. Pedersen said a date for talks in Geneva on the implementation a U.N. resolution, adopted in 2015, and calling for a Syrian-led political process, would be announced later. The resolution calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with U.N.-supervised elections. Later Saturday, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, along with Pederson, gathered on the sidelines of the Doha Summit to discuss the situation in Syria. In a statement issued late Saturday, the participants affirmed their support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis “that would lead to the end of military activity and protect civilians.” They also agreed on the importance of strengthening international efforts to increase aid to the Syrian people. Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. HTS controls much of northwest Syria and in 2017 set up a “salvation government” to run day-to-day affairs in the region. In recent years, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has sought to remake the group’s image, cutting ties with al-Qaida, ditching hard-line officials and vowing to embrace pluralism and religious tolerance. The shock offensive began Nov. 27, during which gunmen captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria’s largest, and the central city of Hama, the country’s fourth largest city. Opposition activists said Saturday that a day earlier, insurgents entered Palmyra, which is home to invaluable archaeological sites had been in government hands since being taken from the Islamic State group in 2017. Gene Defect Linked Brain Size and Social Behavior in ASD, Schizophrenia - Neuroscience NewsMiami Fair Asks Gallery to Remove Portrait of TrumpJamiya Neal finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and four blocks to lead host Creighton over UNLV 83-65 on Saturday in Omaha, Neb. --Field Level Media

The United States Postal Service might have found a way to unite a nation bitterly divided after this month's election: It will release a Betty White stamp. The beloved actor known for roles in "The Golden Girls," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Boston Legal" and others will be on a 2025 Forever stamp, USPS announced this past week. White died in late December 2021 , less than three weeks before her 100th birthday. The Postal Service hasn't announced a release date for the stamp. Betty White speaks Sept. 17, 2018, at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. “An icon of American television, Betty White (1922–2021) shared her wit and warmth with viewers for seven decades,” the Postal Service said in announcing the stamp, which depicts a smiling White based on a 2010 photograph by celebrity photographer Kwaku Alston . “The comedic actor, who gained younger generations of fans as she entered her 90s, was also revered as a compassionate advocate for animals.” Boston-based artist Dale Stephanos created the digital illustration from Alston's photo. "I'd love to send a letter back to my 18-year-old self with this stamp on it and tell him that everything is going to be OK," Stephanos posted on Facebook . Regardless of personal politics, self-proclaimed supporters of Republican President-elect Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris reacted with delight on social media. "Betty White was my hero, all of my life! I actually had a doll when I was a little girl I named Betty White," one Trump supporter posted on X , formerly Twitter. “Something to make this awful week a little better: We’re getting a Betty White stamp,” a pro-Harris X account posted. White combined a wholesome image with a flare for bawdy jokes . Her television career began in the early 1950s and exploded as she aged. “The only SNL host I ever saw get a standing ovation at the after party," Seth Meyers posted on Twitter after her death. "A party at which she ordered a vodka and a hotdog and stayed til the bitter end.” Allen Ludden and his wife Betty White, who love to play games, continue a two year gin rummy battle in which she's ahead by a cumulative 6,000 points in Westchester, N.Y. on April 29, 1965. Chick-Fil-A in fresh attempt at UK launch By JESSICA CLARK Updated: 21:54, 13 December 2024 e-mail View comments US fast food giant Chick-fil-A is aiming to avoid another backlash over the anti-gay views of its billionaire owners when it opens in the UK next year. Chick-fil-A scrapped its Reading pop-up site after just six months when gay rights campaigners targeted it in 2019. But the Atlanta-based restaurant chain has been in talks with LGBT group Stonewall and other charities in a bid to distance itself from accusations of homophobia. The company was founded in 1946 by devout Christian S Truett Cathy and is the third largest fast-food chain in the US by sales. It has more than 3,000 sites in America and has launched in Canada – where it also faced backlash from LGBT campaigners – and Puerto Rico in the last five years. Despite the popularity of its chicken sandwiches, comments and donations made by the Cathy family, who still own and run the business, have triggered controversy. Protests: Chick-fil-A scrapped its Reading pop-up site after just six months when gay rights campaigners targeted it in 2019 They have historically donated to various organisations that have been linked to anti-LGBT beliefs. And chairman Dan Cathy, father of chief executive Andrew Cathy, revealed his opposition to gay marriage in 2012. But the business has been in talks with Stonewall about how to be 'a more inclusive workplace' ahead of another bid to conquer the competitive British market. Outspoken: Chairman Dan Cathy 'We have had some recent conversations with Chick-Fil-A about the training and services we could provide to support the company on this journey.' When asked about the controversy ahead of the UK launch, Chick-fil-A international vice president Paul Trotti told the Mail that the firm's 'desire is to be inclusive to all people and to treat all people with honour, dignity and respect'. Launching in the UK comes with other challenges including tough competition from the likes of KFC and Nando's, and recent American imports Popeyes and Wingstop. Chick-fil-A believes its 'unique' owner-operator franchise model, its focus on fresh ingredients and its trademark Southern hospitality will set it apart. Durant left the game with 3:51 to play in the second quarter and did not return. He headed to the locker room under his own power, and the Suns later said he hurt an ankle without providing any specifics. He finished with 13 points. Though Oklahoma City won West Group B in the NBA Cup, the Suns were hoping to earn a wild-card berth into the quarterfinals. But they were eliminated when Dallas beat Memphis. Booker surpassed 15,000 career points with his first basket of the night. He trails only Walter Davis (15,666) on Phoenix’s scoring list. San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama scored 15 points, all in the second half, and had 13 rebounds. He missed all seven shots in the first half, six from 3-point range. Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 25 points off the bench. Stephon Castle scored 16. Tyus Jones scored 16 points, and Royce O’Neale and Bradley Beal had 10 each for Phoenix. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants snapped a franchise-record 10-game losing streak and ended the Indianapolis Colts' slim playoff hopes Sunday as Drew Lock threw four touchdown passes and ran for another in a 45-33 victory. New York earned its first home win of the season and it no longer has control of the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Lock sandwiched touchdown passes of 31 and 59 yards to Malik Nabers around TD passes of 32 yards to Darius Slayton and 5 yards to Wan'Dale Robinson in leading the Giants (3-13) to their first win since beating Seattle on Oct. 6. Ihmir Smith-Marsette had a 100-yard return on the second-half kickoff on a day the league's worst offense set a season high for points. Jonathan Taylor scored on runs of 3 and 26 yards for Indianapolis (7-9), while Joe Flacco, subbing for the injured Anthony Richardson, threw touchdown passes of 13 yards to Alec Pierce and 7 yards to Michael Pittman, the last bringing the Colts within 35-33 with 6:38 left in the fourth quarter. Lock, who finished 17 of 23 for 309 yards, iced the game by leading a nine-play, 70-yard drive that he capped with a 5-yard run. The 45 points were the most for New York since putting up 49 in a 52-49 loss to the Saints in 2015. It’s the Giants most in a win since a 45-14 rout against Washington in 2014 and most at home since a 52-27 win against the Saints in 2012. Nabers finished with seven catches for a career-high 171 yards. Flacco was 26 of 38 for 330 yards with two interceptions, the second by rookie Dru Phillips shortly after Lock's TD run. Taylor, who rushed for 218 yards in a win over Tennessee last weekend, finished with 125 yards on 32 carries. Pierce had six catches for 122 yards. Rookies Nabers and running back Tyrone Tracy become the third pair of rookies to have more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage in the same season. The previous duo was running back Reggie Bush and receiver Marques Colston of the Saints in 2006. Injuries Colts: Richardson was inactive with foot and back injuries sustained against Tennessee. Giants: DL Armon Watts (knee) was ruled out in the first half. Up next Colts: Finish the regular season by hosting Jacksonville. Giants: At Philadelphia to face Saquon Barkley and the Eagles. AP NFL coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLPresident-elect Donald Trump’s transition operation announced today that it had belatedly signed an agreement with the Justice Department that will allow the FBI to conduct background checks on people Trump intends to appoint as senior officials in his new administration. FBI background checks have long been a routine part of transitions. Law enforcement vetting of a president-elect’s senior team is normally part of decisions about whether they can be entrusted with access to national security secrets, and senators traditionally want to see such dossiers during the confirmation process. But Trump, who is hostile to the FBI because of its role in various criminal and counterintelligence investigations into him, had let weeks pass without signing the agreement. His team considered bypassing the FBI and instead using private investigators. Under that plan, Trump would grant security clearances to his picks after his inauguration, and the Senate would not have access to the usual vetting materials. Despite the signing of the agreement, it remains unclear whether Trump’s team plans to send the names of all officials requiring a security clearance or Senate confirmation to the FBI for vetting. The announcement did not say whether Trump would require his appointees to undergo the process or was simply allowing the FBI to begin looking at those who are willing to submit to its scrutiny. Susie Wiles, Trump’s campaign manager and the incoming White House chief of staff, said in a statement that the agreement would ensure that Trump and his team were “ready on Day 1” to begin enacting their agenda. The transition also said submitting names for background checks and security clearances “will afford the transition process additional insights, and it facilitates our agency landing teams gaining access to the information they need to prepare for leadership of the federal agencies and departments.” Still, the background check process begins with an individual filling out a form with personal information. Under normal circumstances, if an intended appointee refused to cooperate, the president-elect would presumably drop that person. But Trump revels in flouting norms, and there is no legal requirement that requires him to use FBI checks, so the possibility remains that if some decline to participate, Trump might ultimately grant them a security clearance or submit their names to the Senate anyway. The Trump transition team had also delayed signing other agreements with the Biden White House that are part of the normal handoff process. One enables a transition team to use government resources, like office space and email; Trump has decided instead to use private donations to pay for administrative support. The other agreement, which the Trump transition finally signed last week, allows transition officials to gain access to nonpublic — though still not classified — information in exchange for agreeing to obey certain ethics rules and other limits. That agreement allowed so-called “landing teams” to arrive at agencies for briefings about their activities ahead of the transfer of power. In October, The New York Times reported that a memo had circulated at high levels within Trump’s orbit outlining a proposal suggesting that Trump bypass the FBI entirely and, after private screening processes, grant security clearances to a large number of people on his first day in office. The proposal was said to have been influenced by his top legal adviser, Boris Epshteyn, among others. Such a step would reduce the risk that the FBI would uncover evidence of potential wrongdoing and launch a criminal investigation into any of Trump’s cohort. It would also severely undermine the value of the background checks, since private investigators do not have access to information in government law enforcement and intelligence databases. Because the same background check materials are also routinely consulted by the Senate during the confirmation process, that step would represent a challenge to the legislative branch’s independent authority and constitutional role. The memo also suggested that Trump could regard the private background checks as covered by executive privilege — which means he would not have to show them directly to the Senate. Instead, the memo laid out a scenario in which a Trump administration official would brief a limited number of Senate staff members on the findings at the White House. The contents of the memo were described to the Times by three people briefed on the matter. Trump’s delay in starting the process of FBI background checks had attracted growing attention on Capitol Hill, where Republicans will hold a majority of the Senate starting in January. Assuming all 47 Democratic senators would vote against any nominee who lacked a background check as a matter of principle, it would take four Republican senators to break partisan ranks and deny confirmation. Against that backdrop, some Republican senators have suggested that they would like nominees to receive traditional background checks, while others have made clear they would go along whatever Trump wanted to do. At least eight people were killed by Israeli military operations in the northern West Bank around the city of Tulkarem on Tuesday, the Palestinian Health Ministry said, including three people it said were killed by Israeli airstrikes. The Israeli military said it opened fire after militants attacked soldiers, and it was aware of some uninvolved civilians who were harmed in the raid. Elsewhere in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian city of Bethlehem was marking a second somber Christmas Eve under the shadow of the war in Gaza, with most festivities cancelled and crowds of tourists absent. Israel's bombardment and ground invasion in Gaza has killed over 45,000 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians in its count. Winter is hitting the Gaza Strip and many of the nearly 2 million Palestinians displaced by the devastating 15-month war with Israel are struggling to protect themselves from the wind, cold and rain. The war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel in October 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage by Palestinian militants. Around 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza , although only two thirds are believed to still be alive. Here’s the latest: NUR SHAMS REFUGEE CAMP, West Bank — The Palestinian Health Ministry said at least eight people were killed by Israeli military operations in and around the city of Tulkarem in the northern West Bank on Tuesday. The ministry reported three of the dead were killed by airstrikes. The Israeli military said it opened fire after militants attacked soldiers, and it was aware of some uninvolved civilians who were harmed in the raid. An Associated Press photojournalist captured images of Israeli forces detonating an explosive device planted by Palestinian militants during a raid in the Nur Shams refugee camp. Israel has carried out several large-scale raids in the West Bank since the start of the war in Gaza, ignited by Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel. While airstrikes were once rare in the West Bank, they have grown more common since the outbreak of war as Israeli forces clamp down, saying they aim to prevent attacks on their citizens. Israeli fire has killed at least 800 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since October 2023, Palestinian health officials say. In that time, Palestinian militants have launched a number of attacks on soldiers at checkpoints and within Israel. SAYDNAYA, Syria — A large crowd of Syrians gathered near a historic monastery in Saydnaya on Christmas Eve to witness the lighting of a towering tree adorned with glowing green lights. Tuesday's celebration offered a rare moment of joy in a city scarred by over a decade of war and an infamous prison , where tens of thousands were held. Families and friends stood beneath the illuminated tree — some wearing Santa hats, others watching from rooftops — while a band played festive music and fireworks lit up the sky “This year is different, there’s happiness, victory and a new birth for Syria and a new birth for Christ,” said Houssam Saadeh, one attendee. Another, Joseph Khabbaz, expressed hope for unity across all sects and religions in Syria, dismissing recent Christmas tree vandalism as “isolated incidents.” Earlier in the afternoon, pilgrims visited the historic Our Lady of Saydnaya Monastery, one of the world’s oldest Christian monasteries, believed to be built in the sixth century. In Homs, a similarly grand Christmas tree was illuminated as security officers patrolled the area to ensure a safe and peaceful gathering, according to Syria’s state media. UNITED NATIONS -- Recent attacks on hospitals in North Gaza, where Israel is carrying out an offensive, are having a devastating impact on Palestinian civilians still in the area, the U.N. humanitarian office says. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs expressed deep concern at reports that the Israeli military entered the Indonesian Hospital on Tuesday, forcing its evacuation. The humanitarian office, known as OCHA, also expressed deep concern at attacks reported in recent days in and around the two other hospitals in North Gaza that are minimally functioning – Al Awda and Kamal Adwan. OCHA said the Israeli siege on Beit Hanoun, Beit Lahia and parts of Jaballiya in North Gaza continued for a 79th day on Tuesday, and while the U.N. and its partners have made 52 attempts to coordinate humanitarian access to besieged areas in December 48 were rejected by Israel. While four missions were approved, OCHA said the U.N. and its partners faced impediments as a result of Israeli military operations and “none of the U.N.-coordinated attempts to access the area have been fully facilitated.” Throughout the Gaza Strip, OCHA said that Israeli authorities facilitated just 40% of requests for humanitarian movements requiring their approval in December. WASHINGTON — A leading global food crisis monitor says deaths from starvation will likely pass famine levels in north Gaza as soon as next month. The U.S.-created Famine Early Warning System Network says that’s because of a near-total Israeli blockade of food and other aid in that part of Gaza. The finding, however, appears to have exposed a rift within the Biden administration over the extent of starvation in northern Gaza. The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Jacob Lew, disputes part of the data used in reaching the conclusion and calls the intensified famine warning “irresponsible.” Northern Gaza has been one of the areas hardest-hit by fighting and Israel’s restrictions on aid throughout its 14-month war with Hamas militants. UNITED NATIONS — Israel’s foreign minister has requested an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council to condemn recent missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, and to condemn the group's Iranian allies for allegedly providing the group with weapons. Gideon Saar said in a letter Tuesday to Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield of the United States, which holds the council presidency this month, that the Houthis are violating international law and council resolutions. “This Iranian-backed terrorist group continues to endanger Israel’s and other nations’ security, as well as the freedom of maritime navigation, in flagrant violation of international law,” Saar said. “All of this malign activity is done as part of a broader strategy to destabilize the region.” The U.S. Mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to an email asking when the council meeting will be held. The Houthis have said they launched attacks on shipping in the Red Sea – and on Israel -- with the aim of ending Israel’s devastating air and ground offensive in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli war in Gaza followed Hamas’ deadly October 2023 attacks in southern Israel. TEL AVIV, Israel — An Israeli military investigation has concluded that the presence of troops inadvertently contributed to the deaths of six hostages killed by their Hamas captors in Gaza. The hostages' bodies were discovered in a tunnel in late August, an event that shook Israel and sparked some of the largest anti-war protests since the war began. The investigation found that the six hostages were killed by multiple gunshots from their captors after surviving for nearly 330 days. The Israeli military’s “ground activities in the area, although gradual and cautious, had a circumstantial influence on the terrorists’ decision to murder the six hostages,” the report found. According to the investigation, the Israeli military began operating in the area where the hostages were being held in southern Gaza about two weeks before their discovery, under the assumption that the chances of hostages in the area was medium to low. On August 27, hostage Qaid Farhan Alkadi was found alone in a tunnel , causing the Israeli military to halt operations for 24 hours to determine if there could be other hostages in the area. The military discovered the opening leading to the tunnel where the bodies of the six hostages were located on August 30. A pathological report estimated the six hostages were killed on August 29. The six hostages killed were Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, Ori Danino, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin , whose American-Israeli parents became some of the most recognized spokespeople pleading for the hostages’ release, including addressing the Democratic National Convention days before their son’s killing. “The investigation published tonight proves once again that the return of all hostages will only be possible through a deal,” the Hostages Families Forum said in response to the investigation. “Every passing moment puts the hostages’ lives in immediate danger.” JERUSALEM — The Israeli negotiating team working on a ceasefire returned from Qatar to Israel on Tuesday, the prime minister’s office said, after what it called “a significant week” of talks. After months of deadlock, the U.S., Qatar and Egypt resumed their mediation efforts in recent weeks and reported greater willingness by the warring sides to reach a deal. According to Egyptian and Hamas officials, the proposed agreement would take place in phases and include a halt in fighting, an exchange of captive Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, and a surge in aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. Israel says Hamas is holding 100 hostages, over one-third of whom are believed to be dead. On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there was “some progress” in efforts to reach a deal, but added he did not know how long it would take. CAIRO — Israeli soldiers took control of a hospital in isolated northern Gaza after forcing all the patients and most of the doctors to leave, the Palestinian Health Ministry said Tuesday. Some of the patients had to walk to another hospital while others were driven by paramedics, according to Health Ministry spokesperson Zaher al-Wahidi. He did not specify how many patients had evacuated. The Israeli military confirmed its troops had entered the Indonesian Hospital in the town of Jabaliya as part of an operation searching for Hamas fighters. The army later said its soldiers had left the hospital. The military said it had assisted with evacuating the patients and had not ordered the hospital closed. However, al-Wahidi said only one doctor and maintenance person were left behind. The Indonesian Hospital is one of three hospitals left largely inaccessible in the northernmost part of Gaza because Israel has imposed a tight siege there since launching an offensive in early October. The Israeli army said Tuesday’s operation at the Indonesian Hospital came after militants carried out attacks from the hospital for the past month, including launching anti-tank missiles and planting explosive devices in the surrounding area. The Health Ministry accused Israel of “besieging and directly targeting” the three hospitals in northern Gaza. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, said Israeli drones detonated explosives near the hospital and that 20 people were wounded, including five medical staff. The Israeli military declined to comment on the operation around the hospital. DAMASCUS — Scores of Syrian Christians protested in the capital Damascus on Tuesday, demanding greater protections for their religious minority after a Christmas tree was set on fire in the city of Hama a day earlier. Many of the insurgents who now rule Syria are jihadis, although Ahmad al-Sharaa, the leader of the main rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has renounced longtime ties to al-Qaida and spent years depicting himself as a champion of pluralism and tolerance. It remains unclear who set the Christmas tree on fire Monday, which was condemned by a representative of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham who visited the town and addressed the community. “This act was committed by people who are not Syrian, and they will be punished beyond your expectations," the HTS representative said in a video widely shared on social media. "The Christmas tree will be fully restored by this evening.” On Tuesday, protesters marched through the streets of Bab Touma in Damascus, shouting slogans against foreign fighters and carrying large wooden crosses. “We demand that Syria be for all Syrians. We want a voice in the future of our country,” said Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II of the Syriac Orthodox Church as he addressed the crowd in a church courtyard, assuring them of Christians’ rights in Syria. Since HTS led a swift offensive that overthrew President Bashar Assad earlier this month, Syria’s minority communities have been on edge, uncertain of how they will be treated under the emerging rebel-led government. “We are here to demand a democratic and free government for one people and one nation,” another protester said. “We stand united — Muslims and Christians. No to sectarianism.” DOHA — Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said that ceasefire negotiations to end the war in Gaza were ongoing in Doha in cooperation with Egyptian, Qatari, and American mediators. “We will not leave any door unopened in pursuit of reaching an agreement,” said Majid al-Ansari, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Tuesday. Al Ansari added that rumors the ceasefire would be reached before Christmas are “speculation.” The ceasefire negotiations come at a time when winter is hitting the Gaza Strip and many of the nearly 2 million Palestinians displaced by the devastating 15-month war with Israel are struggling to protect themselves from the wind, cold and rain. Families of the approximately 100 hostages who have been held for 445 days in Gaza are also worried their loved ones will not survive another winter. In a press conference, al-Ansari also called on the international community to lift sanctions on Syria as quickly as possible on Tuesday. “The reason was the crimes of the previous regime, and that regime, with all of its authority, is no longer in place, therefor the causes for these sanctions no longer exist today,” he said. DAMASCUS, Syria — American journalist Austin Tice is believed to be still alive, according to the head of an international aid group. Nizar Zakka, who runs the Hostage Aid Worldwide organization, said there has never been any proof that Tice, who has been missing since 2012, is dead. Zakka told reporters in Damascus on Tuesday that Tice was alive in January and being held by the authorities of ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad. He added that U.S. President Joe Biden said in August that Tice was alive. Zakka said he believes Tice was transferred between security agencies over the past 12 years, including in an area where Iranian-backed fighters were operating. Asked if it was possible Tice had been taken out of the country, Zakka said Assad most likely kept him in Syria as a potential bargaining chip. Biden said Dec. 8 that his administration believed Tice was alive and was committed to bringing him home, although he also acknowledged that “we have no direct evidence” of his status. TEL AVIV, Israel — Hannah Katzir, an Israeli woman who was taken hostage on Oct. 7, 2023, and freed in a brief ceasefire last year, has died. She was 78. The Hostages Families Forum, a group representing the families of people taken captive, confirmed the death Tuesday but did not disclose the cause. Her daughter, Carmit Palty Katzir, said in a statement that her mother’s “heart could not withstand the terrible suffering since Oct. 7.” Katzir’s husband, Rami, was killed during the attack by militants who raided their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz. Her son Elad was also kidnapped and his body was recovered in April by the Israeli military, who said he had been killed in captivity. She spent 49 days in captivity and was freed in late November 2023. Shortly after Katzir was freed, her daughter told Israeli media that she had been hospitalized with heart issues attributed to “difficult conditions and starvation” while she was held captive. TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel's military said the projectile was intercepted before crossing into Israeli territory, but it set off air raid sirens overnight in the country's populous central area, sending residents looking for cover. Israel’s rescue service Magen David Adom said a 60-year-old woman was seriously wounded after being hurt on her way to a protected space. There was no immediate comment from Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. It was the third time in a week that fire from Yemen set off sirens in Israel. On Saturday, a missile slammed into a playground in Tel Aviv, injuring 16, after Israel’s air defense system failed to intercept it. Earlier last week, Israeli jets struck Yemen’s rebel-held capital and a port city, killing nine. Israel said the strikes were in response to previous Houthi attacks.jilibay voucher code philippines

Now Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens can rest a bit. They've certainly earned it. Baltimore's 31-2 rout of Houston on Wednesday capped a sweep of a grueling stretch of three games in 11 days. Baltimore looked like a Super Bowl contender while handling the Giants, Steelers and Texans. A win next week would give the Ravens the AFC North title — and a third MVP award for Jackson seems to be very much in play. "These guys took these three games in 11 days and smashed it, obliterated it, tore it up and made into a bunch of smithereens laying around everywhere," coach John Harbaugh said. "I'm proud of the guys (and) how they did it. They did a great job." Jackson's passer rating is up to 121.6 on the season. The NFL record is 122.5 by Aaron Rodgers in 2011. Derrick Henry has 1,783 yards rushing, the second most of his career. Justin Tucker, who has struggled to an alarming degree this season, made a 52-yard field goal that went right down the middle in the first quarter Wednesday. A win next week would be Baltimore's 12th of the season — only one behind the number that gave the Ravens the league's best regular-season record in 2023. They won't be the top seed this season, but a victory over Cleveland in Week 18 would mean a division title. Baltimore can also win the division if Pittsburgh loses to Cincinnati. "I believe how our season has gone — the regular season — it just explains how the NFL is. It really doesn't matter how you start off. It's about how you finish," Jackson said. "And I believe we're finishing pretty well right now." The Ravens lost their first two games of the season, but their open date came right before this tough 11-day stretch, which may have helped. Now they get some extra time to prepare for Cleveland. What's working The Ravens outrushed Houston 251-58, with Jackson scoring on a 48-yard run and Henry racing through big holes from the outset. Jackson passed Michael Vick to take over first place on the NFL's career list for yards rushing by a quarterback. The MVP odds at BetMGM on Thursday showed Buffalo's Josh Allen (-250) as the favorite, but Jackson (+160) was by no means a long shot. "I've seen a lot of great plays from Lamar Jackson," Harbaugh said. "I told him I was proud of him. I'm not just proud of him just because he makes great plays. I'm proud of him for all the things that go into making great plays and also for all the things he's overcome along the way." What needs work The Ravens have cycled through punt returners of late, and newcomer Steven Sims did not have much success in that area Wednesday. He was tackled at his 6-yard line on one return, and when a penalty made Houston do that punt over, the ball bounced inside the 10 and was downed at the 4, leading to a safety and the Texans' only points of the game. Stock up The Baltimore defense, such a liability at times earlier this season, held Houston without a point offensively. C.J. Stroud was sacked five times and threw an interception, and Joe Mixon rushed for only 26 yards. "I'd say we've come full circle," cornerback Marlon Humphrey said. "It's always good when you can have their offense not score. You've got to say you played pretty well. This is a testament to it all kind of coming together. I felt the coaching was there, and I just felt as players, 'What is the formula to continue to get high percentages of 11 guys doing 11 guys' jobs?'" Stock down Keaton Mitchell and Rasheen Ali managed only 17 yards on 12 carries. Justice Hill's absence following a concussion left Baltimore without an effective change-of-pace back to pair with Henry. Injuries Ali injured his hip in the third quarter and didn't return, another blow to Baltimore's running back depth. Key numbers After a 99-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter, the Ravens now have 10 TD drives of 90-plus yards this season. That's the most in the NFL since at least 2000. Up next The Ravens face a Cleveland team that has only three wins entering Week 17 — although one of those victories was against Baltimore. The Ravens allowed 401 yards in a 29-24 loss at Cleveland in late October.

Bruising yearLA Tech, Army players discuss altered postseason plansJinnah’s role as a global figure: Perspectives from international historians “Jinnah was a historic personality who is born once in a century.” - Mussolini “Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.” - Stanley Wolpert, Jinnah of Pakistan. These words by Stanley Wolpert encapsulate the remarkable legacy of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan. Jinnah’s journey from being a staunch advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity to the lone voice of the Muslims of the subcontinent who led the creation of a new nation, stands as a testament to his unparalleled vision and leadership. In his book Jinnah of Pakistan, Stanley Wolpert explores Jinnah’s role as a global figure. Many other international historians also recognise Jinnah for his determination to form a new state through peaceful negotiations with colonial powers. While historians praise his contributions not only as the founder of Pakistan but also as a global figure, they also highlight his transformation from an ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity to a nation builder. However, different historians and world leaders have viewed Jinnah’s role, character, and personality as a global leader from varying perspectives. The great leader played a pivotal role in creating Pakistan, and for this remarkable contribution, he is admired by historians, diplomats, and political commentators. “Jinnah was a historic personality who is born once in a century.” - Mussolini Mussolini acknowledged Quaid-i-Azam’s role as a global figure by calling him a once-in-a-century leader, recognising his extraordinary capabilities. During the Pakistan movement, Jinnah proved to be an iconic leader who changed the course of history, profoundly influencing global politics beyond the dynamics of South Asian politics. As a champion of minority rights, Jinnah believed in equality, justice, and constitutional supremacy for every community. He is known for safeguarding the interests of minorities, and his speech delivered on August 11, 1947, clearly defines his vision of a secular state, where everyone enjoys religious freedom. As he said, “You are free! You are free to go to your temples. You are free to go to your mosques or to any other places of worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion, caste, or creed-that has nothing to do with the business of the state.” Additionally, Jinnah was the leader of the Muslims in South Asia and had clear-cut differences with the ideologies of his counterparts, Nehru and Gandhi. Despite their contrasting views about the future of post-colonial India, Jinnah’s formidable opponents could not ignore his remarkable intellect, determination, and legal brilliance. Nehru’s words reflect his admiration for Jinnah when he said, “Jinnah is one of the most extraordinary men in history.” It has been noted that their arguments and differences sometimes became contentious due to Jinnah’s unwavering determination for a separate homeland for the Muslims of South Asia. Nevertheless, Nehru openly acknowledged the significant role Jinnah played in shaping the future of India. It was due to his pragmatic and visionary leadership qualities that historians pay high tribute to his attributes. Ayesha Jalal, a distinguished historian, in her book The Sole Spokesman: Jinnah, the Muslim League, and the Demand for Pakistan, describes Jinnah as an advocate for the interests of Muslims in India under colonial rule. She highlights his ability to navigate the complicated politics of the time and his efforts to protect the rights of Muslims in South Asia. Her words portray him as a master strategist, willing to adapt his demands based on the political realities of the time, and he achieved his objective through constitutional means. Similarly, S. M. Burke, a famous Pakistani diplomat, professor, and author, in his book Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah: His Personality and His Politics, provides a comprehensive analysis of Jinnah’s personality and political philosophy. He delves into the various aspects of his life, portraying him as a charismatic figure who never compromised his principles and adhered to constitutionalism. He also praised Jinnah’s oratory skills, legal brilliance, and the way he dealt with his counterparts and the colonial government. As he said, “Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was a luminary in three walks of life: he was one of India’s leading legal practitioners, one of India’s leading legislators, and one of India’s leading politicians.” Moreover, Hector Bolitho, Jinnah’s official biographer, in his work Jinnah: Creator of Pakistan, provides a comprehensive account of the life of the great leader. He describes Jinnah as an unwavering and determined leader who, despite his poor health and the hardships of the time, remained firm in his resolve to achieve a separate homeland for the Muslims of South Asia. Another famous historian, Patrick French, in his Liberty or Death: India’s Journey to Independence and Division, views Jinnah as a champion of the rights of Muslims in India and a pragmatic leader who altered the history of India and reshaped the history of the world. Beverley Nicholas, a British author and journalist, in his famous book Verdict On India, referred to him as “the most important man in Asia.” He sees Jinnah as a significant figure in Asia because of his pivotal role in reshaping the history of the people of South Asia and for remaining determined to his values and principles. Quaid-i-Azam was equally praised by both friends and foes, not only as the founder of Pakistan but as a global leader. He holds a distinct position in the annals of history. His style of leadership serves as an excellent approach to achieving desired goals. He established Pakistan on the foundations of justice, equality, and freedom for all. His ideas continue to be praised and debated for the protection of minority rights and nation-building. He was, without a doubt, a great orator, and his speeches had a profound impact on his audience. In the end, it can be inferred that his emphasis on democracy and constitutionalism makes him one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot celebrates victory over Leicester (Peter Byrne/PA) Liverpool head coach Arne Slot continued to play down the significance of their place at the top of the Premier League despite it being strengthened by their 3-1 win over Leicester. Chelsea’s surprise defeat by Fulham meant victory over the Foxes stretched their lead to seven points, with a match in hand, with the halfway point of the campaign fast approaching. But Slot is maintaining his level-headed approach despite the clamour growing around their chances of adding another title to the one won in 2020. The league table is something of course we are aware of but we always understand how many games there are to go.” Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team led early on against Liverpool (Peter Byrne/PA) Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy felt his side held their own until Salah scored in the 82nd minute. “I think we were in the contest for a result for a long time,” he said. “Three-one was the turning point in the sense the game was done there to get a result. “I think the 60th minute I remember a chanced for Daka to score the equaliser so we were in the game to get a surprising result. “We did well, we did what we could: a good start with the goal but if you speak of a turning point, 3-1 with Salah, the game was done.” Van Nistelrooy left goalkeeper Danny Ward out of the squad after he struggled in the defeat to Wolves and was jeered by his own fans. Danny Ward was left out by Leicester (Mike Egerton/PA) “The change in goal was one to make and the conversation with Wardy was impressive, the way he was thinking of the team and the club,” added the Dutchman. “I insisted on a conversation and of course it is a private conversation but what I want to share is the person and the professional he is. “I was impressed with that and his willingness for the team and the club to do well. “Really tough what happened for him. We are professionals but human beings as well, when frustration is being directed towards one person that is difficult.”

The make and brand of the sweater worn by murder suspect Luigi Mangione in court Monday, when he pleaded not guilty to federal charges, has sold out. Meanwhile, more merchandise centered on Mangione is appearing online, as he continues to draw support from fans worldwide. Mangione has been arrested and charged with more than a dozen counts, including murder, in the Dec. 4 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The evolution of Mangione from unknown tech employee and former Gilman School valedictorian to a suspect in a high-profile murder, and even a hero to some because of his reported views on the polarizing American health system, has perplexed and confused many people — and becoming a fashion icon and the subject of merchandise from mugs to posters is one more sign of a large and diverse fan base. While being arraigned on charges of murder in the furtherance of terrorism and other counts in New York, Mangione’s supporters took particular notice of the burgundy sweater he wore during his plea of not guilty on federal charges in Manhattan. Later identified as a merino wool sweater from Nordstrom in the color Burgundy Royale, the sweater worn by Mangione has since sold out following his court appearance. Eagle-eyed legal observers noted that Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, also wore a similar color and style in court, where she described Mangione as a “ human ping pong ball ,” but it wasn’t identical to her client’s. Etsy sellers have also capitalized on Mangione’s notoriety, creating merchandise featuring his likeness on T-shirts, mugs and even flower pots, prompting the retailer to send some sellers featuring the murder suspect takedown notices . In addition to his online supporters researching his outfit, Mangione was joined in court by about two dozen female fans , some of whom wore face masks and cried during his court appearance. The outfits reminded some on social media of the one worn by Ken Bone, an undecided voter who became a minor internet phenomenon in 2016. Nordstrom selling out of Mangione’s sweater is the latest example of his fanbase’s numbers. Tattoos, depictions of Mangione as a saint and a local banner reading “Deny Defend Depose,” the words allegedly on the bullets used to kill Thompson, show how divided the public has become over the 26-year-old Maryland native. ©2024 Baltimore Sun. Stocks closed higher on Wall Street, giving the market its fifth gain in a row and notching another record high for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The S&P 500 rose 0.3% Friday. The Dow added 1%, and the Nasdaq composite tacked on 0.2%. Retailers had some of the biggest gains. Gap soared after reporting quarterly results that easily beat analysts’ estimates. EchoStar fell after DirecTV called off its purchase of that company’s Dish Network unit. European markets closed mostly higher and Asian markets ended mixed. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. Crude oil prices gained ground. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. Stocks rose on Wall Street in afternoon trading Friday, keeping the market on track for its fifth straight gain. The S&P 500 was up 0.2% and was solidly on track for a weekly gain that will erase most of last week's loss. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 333 points, or 0.8%, and the Nasdaq composite was essentially flat with a gain of less than 0.1% as of 3:07 p.m. Eastern. Markets have been volatile over the last few weeks, losing ground in the runup to elections in November, then surging following Donald Trump's victory, before falling again. The S&P 500 has been steadily rising throughout this week to within close range of its record. “Overall, market behavior has normalized following an intense few weeks,” said Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide, in a statement. Several retailers jumped after giving Wall Street encouraging financial updates. Gap soared 10.8% after handily beating analysts' third-quarter earnings and revenue expectations, while raising its own revenue forecast for the year. Discount retailer Ross Stores rose 1.5% after raising its earnings forecast for the year. EchoStar fell 2.4% after DirecTV called off its purchase of that company's Dish Network unit. Smaller company stocks had some of the biggest gains. The Russell 2000 index rose 1.8%. A majority of stocks in the S&P 500 were gaining ground, but those gains were kept in check by slumps for several big technology companies. Nvidia fell 3.3%. Its pricey valuation makes it among the heaviest influences on whether the broader market gains or loses ground. The company has grown into a nearly $3.6 trillion behemoth because of demand for its chips used in artificial-intelligence technology. Intuit, which makes TurboTax and other accounting software, fell 5.6%. It gave investors a quarterly earnings forecast that fell short of analysts’ expectations. Facebook owner Meta Platforms fell 0.8% following a decision by the Supreme Court to allow a multibillion-dollar class action investors’ lawsuit to proceed against the company. It stems from the privacy scandal involving the Cambridge Analytica political consulting firm. European markets closed mostly higher and Asian markets ended mixed. Crude oil prices rose. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.41% from 4.42% late Thursday. In the crypto market, Bitcoin hovered around $99,000, according to CoinDesk. It has more than doubled this year and first surpassed the $99,000 level on Thursday. Retailers remained a big focus for investors this week amid close scrutiny on consumer spending habits headed into the holiday shopping season. Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, reported a quarter of strong sales and gave investors an encouraging financial forecast. Target, though, reported weaker earnings than analysts' expected and its forecast disappointed Wall Street. Consumer spending has fueled economic growth, despite a persistent squeeze from inflation and high borrowing costs. Inflation has been easing and the Federal Reserve has started trimming its benchmark interest rates. That is likely to help relieve pressure on consumers, but any major shift in spending could prompt the Fed to reassess its path ahead on interest rates. Also, any big reversals on the rate of inflation could curtail spending. Consumer sentiment remains strong, according to the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index. It revised its latest figure for November to 71.8 from an initial reading of 73 earlier this month, though economists expected a slight increase. It's still up from 70.5 in October. The survey also showed that consumers' inflation expectations for the year ahead fell slightly to 2.6%, which is the lowest reading since December of 2020. Wall Street will get another update on how consumers feel when the business group The Conference Board releases its monthly consumer confidence survey on Tuesday. A key inflation update will come on Wednesday when the U.S. releases its October personal consumption expenditures index. The PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation and this will be the last PCE reading prior to the central bank's meeting in December. Damian J. Troise And Alex Veiga, The Associated PressThe transfer saga took a dramatic turn when it was revealed that Barcelona could not guarantee Neymar's immediate registration with the Spanish Football Federation. This uncertainty created a roadblock in the negotiations, leading Neymar to reconsider his decision to join the Catalan giants. Without the assurance of being able to play for Barcelona right away, Neymar weighed his options carefully and ultimately decided to stay put at PSG.

Their ability to take on defenders and create space in the final third has made them invaluable assets for Crystal Palace and Everton respectively. In the end, Nani's story serves as a reminder that success is not always measured by external recognition or comparison to others. True fulfillment comes from staying true to oneself, embracing challenges with courage, and finding strength in one's own light. Nani may not have followed in C Ronaldo's footsteps, but he blazed his own trail and shone brightly in his own right.

However, the surge in asset values of Chinese listed companies has also raised concerns about potential risks and market frothiness. Critics have pointed out issues such as corporate governance practices, regulatory uncertainties, and the lack of transparency in financial reporting as reasons for caution when investing in Chinese concept stocks.Placing a legal bet in Illinois once required a trip to a racetrack. Then riverboat casinos set sail and eventually made landfall, followed by an ever-growing wave of slot machines installed at bars and restaurants statewide. Now, the advent of mobile sports betting means gamblers can get in on the action anywhere there’s a cell signal. And soon, the full gamut of casino games could be just a phone tap away, too, as lawmakers consider crossing the final frontier of legalized gambling in a state already teeming with temptations. Gaming interests are expected to make a full-court press next year in Springfield to legalize internet casino gambling, known in industry parlance as iGaming, that would bring state-regulated slots, blackjack, poker and more to the palm of your hand. It’s not the first time gaming industry players have pushed to expand Illinois’ sprawling menu of gambling options. Nor is it the first time they’ve faced stiff pushback from business owners who rely on video gaming terminals to draw customers through their doors — or from opponents who warn of a surge in addiction to what some have branded “gambling fentanyl.” But internet gambling could have better odds of advancing in the upcoming legislative session as Gov. JB Pritzker and statehouse leaders scramble for new money to help cover an estimated $3 billion budget shortfall. “In a tough budget year, you’re looking at ways to increase revenue. This is one tool for that,” said state Sen. Cristina Castro, an Elgin Democrat who has introduced iGaming bills that previously fell short. “And it’s something that could be more palatable to constituents.” Proponents estimate the state would rake in $450 million in new tax revenue within a year of allowing Illinoisans to play casino games on their mobile devices, eventually generating up to $800 million a year. Opponents argue it would be a zero-sum game for a state that has more places to bet than Nevada does, when counting Illinois’ 16 casinos, two racetracks and 8,660-and-counting bars, restaurants, gas stations and VFW halls authorized to operate video gaming machines. “When you start letting people play from home, do you think they’re going to go to those places and spend money?” said state Rep. John Cabello, R-Machesney Park. “It’s cutting off the nose and spiting the face.” Potential tax jackpots Illinois government relied on a record-high $2.1 billion in gaming tax revenue in the fiscal year ending in June, including $158 million from casinos, $190 million from sports betting, $848 million from video gaming and $886 million from the lottery, according to the state Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability. Seven other states that have authorized internet gambling in recent years have seen significant tax windfalls — and surging interest from gamblers. New Jersey casinos reported a record $214 million in gross revenue from internet gambling in November, generating about $32 million in state taxes. Pennsylvania, which taxes iGaming at a higher rate, pulled in almost $86 million in taxes on $200 million in revenue. Gov. Pritzker called the idea “worthy of consideration” for Illinois. His office is drafting its yearly budget proposal, which he’ll present in February and negotiate with lawmakers for passage by the end of May. Pritzker’s administration has overseen a massive gambling expansion that added six new casinos, expanded video gaming and ushered in the sports betting industry — which the governor and state lawmakers slapped with hefty tax hikes last year. Lobbyists for major gambling companies like DraftKings and FanDuel banded together as the Sports Betting Alliance to fight the new graduated tax system before it was passed, threatening to leave the state due to the cut into their profits. But they’re back this time around to push for internet gambling, which the companies offer on their platforms in other states in addition to sports betting. Cannibalizing concerns The ubiquity of casino games could go live within a few months of potential legislative passage in Illinois, with licenses likely tied to partnerships with brick-and-mortar casinos, according to Sports Betting Alliance president Jeremy Kudon. That’s how the state handles sports betting licenses. “All of this iGaming already exists in Illinois,” Kudon said, pointing to illegal online casinos that have long operated offshore. “All we’re trying to do is legalize, regulate and tax it.” He rejected the idea that internet gambling would cannibalize dollars from other corners of Illinois’ saturated gaming market. “People who play online blackjack are not the same people going to bars and restaurants and casinos to play. Those have a certain social appeal and physical element that brings people in,” Kudon said. The companies say they’ve found that internet gamblers tend to be younger than casino or video gaming customers, with demographics skewing toward women with higher salaries who wager no more than $15 per session. “Something entirely on your phone attracts a different customer. It’s almost like mindless entertainment, or meditation. You’re present in this moment, not thinking about anything else,” Kudon said. “For me, it’s more of a relief than Netflix.” Castro agreed, saying “there is enough business to go around. We should do everything we can to shut down the illegal market.” But bar and restaurant owners are worried it would cut into their clientele who are often drawn in by video gaming. Keith Wetherell, executive director of the Illinois Licensed Beverage Association, estimates some businesses could see their revenue drop by 40% if customers have the option to gamble on their couch instead. “It lowers foot traffic in our establishments. That would be devastating to smaller bars and liquor license holders. A good portion of them wouldn’t survive,” Wetherell said. “A lot of these are Mom-and-Pop shops. Gaming helps subsidize health insurance options and keeps people employed. They wouldn’t be able to shoulder that big of a loss.” Those losses would hit local governments that split video gaming revenue at the benefit of large out-of-state gambling corporations, Wetherell said. “Their software isn’t in Illinois. This is a whole lot of money leaving the Illinois economy,” he said. More money would be made if Chicago were to adopt video gaming, Wetherell argued, an idea that Mayor Brandon Johnson has supported but hasn’t pushed to implement. State law allows municipalities to opt out of it. Cabello, the Republican state lawmaker, called it “absolutely, positively stupid” that Chicago bars and restaurants are missing out on video gaming revenue — a windfall the state could use, too. “How stupid can any elected official be, to know that your budget is ballooning out of control, and you don’t allow gaming in your city?” Cabello said, adding that he’d push for legislation requiring Chicago and other Cook County municipalities to allow video gaming. Kudon suggested the iGaming lobby would be open to potentially licensing some video gaming operators to cut them into the action — but Wetherell said he hasn’t seen “any mechanism that would make the system equitable.” ‘Gambling fentanyl’ Other opponents are urging lawmakers to look past the massive dollar signs being flashed by the internet gambling industry and to consider the social costs. “This literally is the equivalent of gambling fentanyl,” said Les Bernal, national director of the Stop Predatory Gambling advocacy group.”This is putting gambling fentanyl on every smartphone, in every living room, every dorm room, every office in the state of Illinois that has an internet connection.” A study commissioned by the state in 2021 found that 3.8% of adults in Illinois, or about 383,000 people, have a gambling problem, with additional 7.7% — about 761,000 people — potentially at risk for developing a problem. Since Pritzker authorized Illinois’ 2019 gaming expansion, he’s set aside additional money in state budgets for gambling addiction treatment programs . Internet gambling supporters also note their technology allows customers to set time and wager limits. None of that makes up for an inevitable rise in an addiction disorder that is closely linked to suicide, Bernal said. “The idea that you have this incredibly dangerous and addictive product, and you’re going to have state officials welcoming it when Illinois has already got as much predatory gambling as any state in America — it’s a threat to public health,” Bernal said. “There’s no grassroots movement for any of this. It’s being driven by very powerful gambling interests with the help of a handful of officials in both parties.” The new General Assembly will be inaugurated Jan. 8. Castro, the Elgin state senator who has supported internet gambling, said she expects extended talks on potential legislation through May.
