McCourt, who formerly owned the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, said he has received verbal funding commitments totaling $20 billion from a consortium of investors to rescue the app from legal purgatory as it awaits a Supreme Court decision to determine if it will be forced to sell its U.S. operations. His vision for TikTok includes revamping the company's advertising model so that users will have control over the ads and type of content they want to see. Over time, TikTok could earn revenue through ecommerce and licensing data for artificial intelligence training models - with users' consent - which will diminish the business' reliance on ads. "When you give permission for your data to be used and you receive compensation, it's flipping this 180 degrees and giving the user the power," McCourt said this week. The plan faces several hurdles, including TikTok's repeated assertions that it cannot be divested from its owner, Chinese tech firm ByteDance. McCourt said the bid for TikTok would exclude the algorithm that determines the content that users see, in order to reduce complications for ByteDance. The Chinese government in 2020 added content recommendation algorithms to its export-control list, requiring a divestiture or sale of TikTok's algorithm to go through its administrative licensing procedures. TikTok's appeal to the Supreme Court is a last-ditch effort to overturn a law signed by U.S. President Joe Biden that seeks to force a sale over national security concerns, or else the app will be banned on Jan. 19. McCourt said he believes the Supreme Court will uphold the law, after which ByteDance could be open to negotiations. Until then, he is focused on smoothing the path to an acquisition. McCourt said he and his team have had "preliminary conversations" with members of President-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration. Trump tried to ban TikTok in 2020 but has since reversed his view, saying on Dec. 16 that he has "a warm spot in my heart for TikTok." A spokesperson for Trump did not respond to a request for comment. The team is also speaking with potential CEO candidates for the new TikTok, McCourt said. One source familiar with the matter said the team approached V. Pappas, TikTok's former chief operating officer. Pappas did not respond to a request for comment. McCourt declined to name who he is speaking with for the CEO role. The plan for TikTok will also include migrating its technology onto an open-source protocol developed by Project Liberty, an organization founded by McCourt. The protocol would allow users to control their data and easily move it elsewhere on the internet. The plan is influencing the search for a CEO. "This is both a big project to scale the technology that we've built, but it is also a vision for a better internet. We're talking to people who share that vision and have the capacity and skills to do both," McCourt said. LAS VEGAS -- After securing his fourth world championship at the age of just 27, has firmly entered 's greatest of all time debate. He is now in exalted company. Only Juan Manuel Fangio, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and have won four championships. Verstappen's next goal is to join Fangio, Schumacher and Hamilton as a winner of five -- if he did it next year, he would emulate Schumacher in winning five consecutively. The Dutchman's record-breaking 2023 season had already firmly established this decade as the Verstappen Era, but his follow-up in 2024 was special for a number of different reasons. Verstappen won seven of the first ten races, seemingly cruising to his fourth title before Red Bull's campaign began to crumble, with an increasingly erratic car, and the rise of McLaren in the middle of the season. This was when Verstappen showed his mettle, though, extracting important performances from the car at every weekend and then in the pouring rain the São Paulo Grand Prix to move himself to the brink. That Interlagos performance, which saw him race from 17th on the grid to victory, was a feather in the cap. F1's candidates for the GOAT also have had career-defining performances in similar conditions: three-time world champion Ayrton Senna, considered by many to be F1's greatest ever, had Monaco 1984 and Donington 1992; Schumacher had Spain 1996; and Hamilton had Silverstone 2008. Verstappen's career now checks multiple boxes. A title against another all-time great, Hamilton, in 2021. Two dominant seasons in an unmatched car. And now a championship with a car that you can consider to have been inferior for much of the season. Few drivers can point to all three of those types of championship-winning campaigns, and that is why 2024 has been so significant to Verstappen's legacy. Dominant Formula 1 winners always have to deal with the suggestion that they are the benefactors of a great car. If that were the case, teams like Red Bull would pay average drivers a lot less money than they are paying Verstappen. There is a reason teams always want a superstar driver. This subject is something that has irked Verstappen recently. He took a playful (but clearly thought-out) jab at McLaren CEO Zak Brown, who earlier this year claimed seven or eight current drivers could win the title in the Dutchman's Red Bull. Verstappen went on to claim if he was driving Brown's McLaren, which doubled up as a dig at title rival . "Last year I had a dominant car but I always felt not everyone appreciated what we achieved as a team. Of course the car was dominant but it wasn't as dominant as people thought it was," Verstappen said in Las Vegas. "I will always look back at it because, even if in places we didn't have the best setup in the races, we were still capable to win races because the car was quite strong. But I am also very proud of this season because for most of it -- I would say for 70% -- we didn't have the fastest car, but actually we still extended our lead, so that is something I am very proud of." Fans and pundits can get into the weeds of who had the best car where until the end of time, but Verstappen is right to say his car did not look like a title-winning one for much of the year. Norris has been criticised for failing to properly utilise the strength of his McLaren at various points in the season, and it was that contrast to Verstappen that proved most telling. Another mark of the new four-time world champion's greatness can be seen by looking at the other side of the Red Bull garage. Much has been made of 's abysmal form in the second RB20, but plenty within the team feel the car is likely somewhere between his and Verstappen's performances; there is a suggestion that one driver is over performing and the other is underperforming. Verstappen's reputation as a teammate killer is well founded and is built on his incredible ability to drive just about anything beyond the limits of what other drivers might be able to. That's why 2024 felt like the cherry on top of his achievements so far: he wasn't just beating a teammate to the title, he was battling an erratic car against quickly improving rivals. At this stage, it's hard to imagine Verstappen retiring as just a four-time world champion. McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes will take renewed hope of challenging for the drivers' title in 2025, but this season has demonstrated that Verstappen is the driver to beat, regardless of where his car is in the competitive order. While at times this year -- something that was true of other GOAT candidates like Senna and Schumacher -- it is difficult to find times Verstappen has made unforced errors. Most worryingly of all for his rivals is that, in the decade since he made his debut as a 17-year-old, he appears to have gained the wisdom to settle for second, fourth or sixth when he needs to. Is Verstappen the GOAT? Assigning GOAT status to anyone is circumstantial and subjective and often suffers from recency bias. Some sports have obvious candidates for how they completely reshaped the game they played, like Michael Jordan. Some were utterly unmatched by their peers, like Serena Williams or Wayne Gretzky. Others, like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, divide opinion but stand alone in the argument. While it is always difficult and slightly unfair to compare different eras, with standards of play and professionalism improving with every decade that passes, Formula 1 has an added layer of complexity to it. The best example of this is to compare the greats of today to Fangio, the legend of the 1950s. The Argentine won five championships for four different teams in an era when a season would span less than 10 races -- the 2024 season will finish at 24. But there were more glaring differences back then. Fatality rates in F1 races during Fangio's day were awful and that fact hung over drivers every time they stepped into the cockpit. That is not to say the same danger does not exist today, but safety standards have improved massively. The stats show that to be the case: 15 F1 drivers died in the 1950s, 14 in the 1960s, 12 in the 1970s, 4 in the 1980s and 2 in the 1990s. Jules Bianchi's death in 2015, from injuries sustained at the previous year's Japanese Grand Prix, remains the only one from this millennium. Improved safety is not something to hold against modern drivers, it simply complicates trying to compare a Verstappen or Hamilton with someone of Fangio's era. There are many who saw Jim Clark race in the 1960s who felt he was the greatest ever. The Scot was killed in a Formula 2 race in 1968 as a two-time F1 champion but at the time of his death held the record for wins, pole positions and fastest laps. Enzo Ferrari considered Gilles Villeneuve, who died at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix having not managed to win a title, as the best driver he ever saw race one of his famous cars. Senna is revered as one of the greatest, but his death in at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix stopped him from trying to add to his three championships. The darker side of motor racing makes an easy debate on the topic difficult to have. It is not just the deaths either. While the basic rules of a soccer game and the dimensions of a pitch have remained the same, Formula 1 is an ever-evolving championship. Rules change, cars change, safety standards change, even the circuits change. Technology's continued, rapid evolution is what allows the sport to change as often as it does. Senna, Prost and Schumacher raced in a time with limited data available to them. Drivers today have an almost-unbelievable amount of information at their fingertips: insights into their own performance and that of their teammates and rivals. You could use that to knock the modern generation, but there is a flip side to that. The modern batch of F1 racers compete in an era of significantly limited testing; gone are the days where Schumacher and Ferrari could travel home from a race and complete 300 laps the following day at the Fiorano test track in Maranello. The current budget cap has added another layer of difficulty drivers of old simply did not have to deal with: power units need to be managed to stretch over a long season, rather than dropping in a freshly built engine ahead of each grand prix, and crashes can now have a direct impact on what can be invested in development. The more you pull at the threads of different factors over the years, the more complicated it becomes to assign the greatest status to anyone. The outright greatest will always be subjective and often can be limited to whether you saw a particular driver competing at their best, but Verstappen is doing something few before him have done, and is raising the bar every year he competes. There might even be greater talents on the horizon but, like Schumacher and Hamilton before him, Verstappen continues to move the goalposts they'll be tasked with reaching Verstappen is also good enough that, in a few years, there might not even be a debate left to have. He has repeatedly spoken about not wanting to race into his late 30s, but in the here and now, he goes into 2025 as favourite. Whether he is still racing with Red Bull in 2026 or beyond will be a fascinating narrative to follow in the coming seasons, and it is clear the best route to success for any team right now is to have Verstappen in the cockpit. That isn't going to change any time soon.Metro Detroit received its first snow of the season this week and there were more than 100 crashes in the area. Over the last 24 hours, there have been approximately 150 preventable crashes across Metro Detroit, according to Michigan State Police. Four patrol cars were hit while troopers were investigating the crashes. State police say that many of the drivers were following vehicles too close, and driving too fast for the conditions. “Unfortunately, we still have some flurries out there,” said state police in a social media post. “So we will say it again, weather doesn’t cause crashes, drivers do.” Snow flurries are possible and high temperatures in the 20s are expected across Southeast Michigan throughout the weekend. Blake Snell and the Dodgers agreed to a $182 million, five-year contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the deal is subject to a successful physical. The two-time Cy Young Award winner broke the news personally by posting a photo of himself on social media in a Dodgers uniform — No. 7. Snell gets a $52 million signing bonus, payable on Jan. 20, and annual salaries of $26 million, of which $13 million each year will be deferred. Because Snell is a Washington state resident, the signing bonus will not be subject to California income tax. Snell would join two-way star Shohei Ohtani and fellow Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto atop Los Angeles’ rotation, giving the Dodgers the first megadeal this offseason following Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year contract and Yamamoto’s $325 million, 12-year agreement last offseason. Ohtani didn’t pitch this year while recovering from right elbow surgery but is expected back on the mound in 2025. He won his third MVP award — first in the National League — following a huge season at the plate exclusively as a designated hitter. Yamamoto went 7-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 18 starts as a rookie, then won twice in four October outings. Because he turned down a qualifying offer from San Diego last November, the Giants were not eligible to give Snell another one and won’t receive draft-pick compensation. The preferences of the modern car buyer are so vastly different now than they were 40 years ago. It’s hard to imagine that there was actually a point in time where Chevrolet thought a fancy Camaro focused on luxury and technology would ever sell, but the 1984 Camaro Berlinetta was just that. While it’s still hard to conceive of any reason that someone would buy one, the latest MotorWeek Retro Review showcases some unique touches in the interior of the Camaro Berlinetta that were improved over the ‘82 model , and it actually really impressed me. What didn’t impress me, though, were the gussied-up alleged muscle car’s performance numbers. History remembers the Chevrolet Camaro as a muscle car; a powerful, affordable, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, blue-blooded stab at a performance car. It hasn’t always been that way. The early days of U.S. emissions regulations hamstrung the performance chops of most cars sold in the country, and the Camaro Berlinetta’s standard 2.8-liter V6 only produced a paltry 107 horsepower. That was barely enough power for a 14-second 0-to-60-mph “sprint,” despite being paired with the more efficient five-speed manual transmission option. But the V6 was only the base engine, and the Berlinetta was about more than just outright performance, so how did it fare as a personal luxury coupe? Luxury? I wouldn’t describe the Berlinetta’s interior in this Retro Review as particularly luxurious, but it did have some innovative features. The most impressive touch that I believe would be beneficial to include in modern cars is the extendable control pods that are mounted around the perimeter of the gauge cluster. Dash-mounted control pods were all the rage in the ‘80s, but I never knew that some of them were adjustable. Especially when the steering wheel is adjustable making those important controls farther away from some drivers hands than others, why not make the controls telescope, too? The swiveling stereo in this Berlinetta really blew my mind. Is the concept revolutionary? No, but prior to watching this review I didn’t know that such a thing ever existed, let alone 40 years ago. Both the adjustable control pods and the swiveling stereo look like they’ll break with more than five uses, but they’re still some pretty zany features that have actual ergonomic benefits. Especially compared to modern cars where many vital controls are hidden behind a series of touch-sensitive menus that require concentrated eye contact to use with any accuracy. But, if I had to choose between physical buttons and modern powertrains, I’d take modern powertrains any day. Scheifele wasn’t accidentally handing out bulletin-board material after this game, but he gave folks in attendance or watching elsewhere plenty to talk about with this virtuoso performance. Scheifele had five shots on goal, nine shot attempts and his pass to Kyle Connor on a two-on-one rush for his second goal of the contest was a thing of beauty. “Oh, yeah. Obviously, I know how much it means for him to come in here. He’s just a local kid that wants to do well,” said Jets head coach Scott Arniel. “That whole line, I thought they did lots of good things and yeah, for Scheif, that will make for a nice Christmas present.” The Jets were eager to return the favour to the Maple Leafs after they snapped their season-opening eight-game winning streak in late October. “We were excited to get another crack at them and show them the game that we can play,” said Scheifele. “All in all, it’s a big win for us and that’s pretty much it.” Several hats were tossed onto the ice when Scheifele sealed the game with his empty-netter with 20.9 seconds to go. “I was hoping I was going to see a couple right away,” said Scheifele. “Maybe the Jets fans couldn’t get the seats closer to the ice.” Since it was his first time in Toronto since Canada named its 4 Nations Face-Off roster, Scheifele was asked about being left off the team and he gave a diplomatic answer — saying he was disappointed but just wants to play well for the Jets and control what he can control. Connor, his longtime linemate, was also asked whether or not Scheifele has been playing with additional motivation since the announcement. “Whether it is or not, his play has been great all year. He’ll be on that Olympic team, I’ve got no doubts,” said Connor, who had a four-point effort of his own with two goals and two assists. “He’ll take this motivation and he’s the type of player that can ramp it up like that. It’s too bad he didn’t make the team, but it is what it is. Obviously you’ve seen what he’s done since.” The Jets enter the holiday break with a record of 25-10-1 and 51 points, which is tops in the NHL. “Well, it’s a good start. It’s a race,” said Arniel. “Obviously you’ve got to get out of the gate good and we did. Let’s take a closer look at this one. – Along with the one Scheifele made to Connor for the backhand redirection, there were several other beautiful passes made by the Jets that led to goals, including a backhand saucer from Gabe Vilardi to Scheifele that made it a 3-1 game early in the second period. However, two hedge fund billionaires sold Microsoft and bought Meta Platforms in the third quarter: Stephen Mandel of Lone Pine Capital sold 364,426 shares of Microsoft, reducing his position by 18%. He also bought 496,900 shares of Meta Platforms, increasing his position by 36%. Meta Platforms is now his largest holding, and Microsoft dropped from second to fifth. Louis Bacon of Moore Capital Management sold 93,922 shares of Microsoft, cutting his stake by 70%. He also bought 128,207 shares of Meta Platforms, increasing his position by 961%. Meta is now his second-largest holding aside from options, and Microsoft no longer ranks in the top 50. Investors should not copy those trades without due diligence. Both hedge funds underperformed the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) during the last three years. And the trades were made in the third quarter, which ended three months ago. That said, Microsoft and Meta Platforms do warrant further consideration, given that artificial intelligence could supercharge their profits in the future. 1. However, Brent Bracelin at Piper Sandler says concerns related to investments in AI are overblown. Microsoft's AI business is expected to surpass an annual revenue run rate of $10 billion next quarter, just two-and-a-half years after its launch, which is four times faster than the cloud business reached the same milestone. Also, Bracelin thinks AI revenue could grow tenfold to reach $100 billion annually in the future. Even so, Microsoft still has a valuable problem. The stock trades at 36 times earnings, a premium to the five-year average of 33 times earnings. That multiple is hard to justify when Wall Street expects earnings to grow at 13% annually in the next three years. Those figures give a price-to-earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio of 2.7, and conventional wisdom says values above 2 are expensive. However, the Indian equity market faced headwinds due to record levels of aggressive selling by FIIs. Adding to the challenges, disappointing Q2 earnings by India Inc. and a slowdown in GDP growth further dampened investor sentiment,” Meena said. Carter – the longest-lived and longest-married US president – is unlikely to be placed in the first rank of American leaders, but his single four-year term is now seen in a much better light than it was when he was best known for the seizure of American hostages in Iran and for his crushing loss to Ronald Reagan in 1980. The easy shorthand on Carter – inept president but superb former president – is a major oversimplification. In office, Carter was a political failure but a policy success, with a string of unheralded accomplishments and a partially fulfilled vision of peace and a clean energy future. He was an austere, non-ideological, moral leader who didn’t like to think of himself as a politician and operated as one only during campaigns. With a peculiar combination of Zen calm and steely-eyed stubbornness, Carter essentially lived in three centuries. He was born in 1924 but it might as well have been the 19th century. His family, while well-to-do for the area, had no electricity, running water or mechanized equipment on the farm. He was connected to almost all of the significant events of the 20th century. And the issues he tackled during his post-presidency – global health, democracy promotion and conflict resolution – are the cutting-edge challenges of the 21st. As a child, Carter was driven by a dream of attending the US Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1946. When his father died, in 1953, he left the navy to take over the family peanut warehouse and assume his father’s many civic responsibilities. Ducking the civil rights movement, Carter was elected to the Georgia senate in 1962 and – after dog-whistle appeals to segregationists – as governor in 1970. He immediately turned on his racist supporters and integrated state government before launching a brilliant campaign that, with the help of the Watergate scandal and the support of the “Gonzo” journalist Hunter S Thompson, brought him from 0% in the polls to the Democratic nomination for president in 1976. Though briefly derailed by an interview in Playboy magazine in which the Southern Baptist confessed to having “committed adultery in my heart many times”, he won a narrow victory over Gerald Ford, who had assumed the presidency after the resignation of Richard Nixon. With skills ranging from agronomist, nuclear engineer and sonar technologist to poet, painter and master woodworker, Carter was the first president since Thomas Jefferson who could rightly be considered a Renaissance man. He was also the first since Jefferson under whom no blood was shed in war. And his record of honesty and decency, once seen as minimum qualifications, have loomed larger with time. At a farewell dinner just before leaving office, his vice-president, Walter F Mondale, toasted the Carter administration: “We told the truth. We obeyed the law. We kept the peace.” Carter later added a fourth major accomplishment: “And we championed human rights.” Carter did so by taking the American civil rights movement global and setting a new standard for how governments should treat their own people. While his human rights policy could be hypocritical – the US continued to support the Shah of Iran and a few other dictators who served American interests – Carter’s new approach contributed to the demise of more than a dozen authoritarian regimes in Latin America and Asia. Two future heads of state, Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic and Kim Dae-jong of South Korea, credited their freedom from prison in part to Carter, whose words gave hope to thousands of dissidents and, even by some conservative accounts, helped undermine communism. Carter may be best known for the 1978 Camp David Accords, the most durable major peace treaty since the second world war. Israel and Egypt had fought four wars in 30 years when Carter brought the Israeli prime minister, Menachem Begin, and the Egyptian president, Anwar Sadat, together at a rustic retreat in the Maryland mountains. At various times, Begin and Sadat (a close friend of Carter) packed their bags and prepared to leave without an agreement. The talks were saved by Carter’s grit. Averell Harriman, Franklin D Roosevelt’s wartime envoy, called Camp David “one of the most extraordinary things any president in history has ever accomplished”. While Israel and Egypt have maintained a chilly detente for four decades, the second part of the deal – a path to Palestinian statehood – has not been realized. Carter praised Begin for turning over the Sinai to Egypt but argued that he reneged on a pledge to freeze Israeli settlements on the West Bank until the completion of Palestinian autonomy. He believed that had he been re-elected, he would have achieved a comprehensive Middle East peace. Carter’s most far-reaching accomplishment may have been the normalization of US relations with China. Within days of Deng Xiaoping’s historic 1979 visit to Washington, Deng legalized private property and took other big steps toward a capitalist economy. Carter jettisoned Nixon and Ford’s awkward “two China policy” (which favored Taiwan) and established the bilateral relationship that is the foundation of the global economy. Another foreign policy victory came when Carter overcame steep odds to win the 67 votes in the Senate needed to ratify the Panama Canal treaties, which turned over the canal to the Panamanians. The treaties sharply improved the standing of the US throughout Latin America and avoided a permanent deployment of more than 100,000 US troops to protect the canal from guerrilla attacks. But several Democratic senators lost their seats over the vote and Carter won no credit for preventing a festering Vietnam-style conflict in Central America. Carter sharply increased defense spending and developed the B2 stealth bomber and other hi-tech weapons that years later helped win the cold war, contradicting a rightwing canard that he was somehow “weak” on defense. After the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, he was forced to withdraw the Salt II Treaty from the Senate (though its terms were respected by both nations). Carter’s decision to boycott the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and impose a grain embargo on the Soviet Union were ineffective and, eventually, hugely unpopular. At home, Carter failed to enact welfare, tax and healthcare reform. But he still signed more domestic legislation than any other postwar president except Lyndon Johnson, much of it far-sighted. He established the Department of Education, the Department of Energy and the Federal Emergency Management Agency; replaced tokenism with genuine racial and gender diversity in the civil service and federal judiciary; curbed the power of banks to “redline” (disinvest in) black neighborhoods; and provided the first whistleblower protections and the first bureaucratic watchdogs, or inspectors general. Carter placed solar panels on the roof of the White House (taken down by Reagan), a symbol of a stellar environmental record that included the first funding for green energy, the first fuel economy standards for autos and the first federal requirements for toxic waste clean-up, among other far-reaching statutes. With the Alaska Lands Act, Carter protected that state from despoilment and doubled the size of the national park system. Had he been re-elected, he planned to begin to address global warming, which was then an obscure problem even in the scientific community. Anticipating the moderate “New Democrat” presidencies of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, Carter reduced the budget deficit and reluctantly approved a business tax cut. His appointment of Paul A Volcker as chair of the Federal Reserve board led to sky-high interest rates that helped cripple his presidency. But Volcker’s harsh monetary medicine eventually ended double-digit inflation, a victory whose political benefits accrued to Reagan. In the second half of his term, Carter was beset by external problems, many beyond his control. Gasoline shortages led to a public “malaise”, which Carter addressed in a famous speech, without using the word. Senator Edward Kennedy, darling of liberals, launched a damaging campaign against him for the 1980 Democratic nomination. After the seizure of the hostages in Tehran, the American public rallied around Carter for a time, which helped him fend off Kennedy. But when a helicopter mission to free the hostages was aborted in the Iranian desert, Carter’s popularity sank again. While he was unable to free the hostages before the election (perhaps because of an “October Surprise” deal between the Reagan campaign and the Iranian government), he did so afterwards – though the liberated Americans didn’t clear Iranian airspace until moments after Reagan was sworn in. For four decades after leaving office, Carter continued his work as a peacemaker and promoter of human rights and democratic accountability. The Musketeers committed 14 turnovers in the first half and fell behind 41-30. The blast in the Zubin Potok municipality of northern Kosovo damaged a canal that carries drinking water to several regions as well as cooling water for the country’s thermal power plants. The incident raised concerns about potential disruptions to essential services, including water and electricity. Local media showed photographs of water leaking from the reinforced canal. “The attack was carried out by professionals, and we believe it comes from groups orchestrated by and directed by Serbia,” Kurti said in the Kosovan capital of Pristina at an emergency press conference after midnight. Kurti said Serbian operatives have the “capacity to carry out such attacks using large quantities of explosives,” without offering specific evidence. Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric fired back against “premature accusations” in a lengthy post on X, saying the blast may have been “a deliberate diversion” orchestrated by Kosovo’s government. He offered financial and technical support to help repair the canal, which is vital to Serb-populated municipalities of Kosovo. Aleksandr Vucic, Serbia’s president, said in Belgrade on Saturday that his country had nothing to do with the incident “and Pristina knows that.” Kosovo’s National Security Council convened an emergency meeting to approve additional security measures for critical infrastructure. The president-elect is renewing unsuccessful calls he made during his first term for the U.S. to buy Greenland from Denmark, adding to the list of allied countries with which he's picking fights even before taking office on Jan. 20. In a Sunday announcement naming his ambassador to Denmark, Trump wrote that, “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." Trump again having designs on Greenland comes after the president-elect suggested over the weekend that the U.S. could retake control of the Panama Canal if something isn't done to ease rising shipping costs required for using the waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He's also been suggesting that Canada become the 51st U.S. state and referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “governor” of the “Great State of Canada.” Stephen Farnsworth, a political science professor at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, said Trump tweaking friendly countries harkens back to an aggressive style he used during his days in business. “You ask something unreasonable and it’s more likely you can get something less unreasonable,” said Farnsworth, who is also author of the book “Presidential Communication and Character.” Greenland, the world’s largest island, sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. It is 80% covered by an ice sheet and is home to a large U.S. military base. It gained home rule from Denmark in 1979 and its head of government, Múte Bourup Egede, suggested that Trump’s latest calls for U.S. control would be as meaningless as those made in his first term. “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale,” he said in a statement. “We must not lose our years-long fight for freedom.” The Danish Prime Minister’s Office said in its own statement that the government is “looking forward to welcoming the new American ambassador. And the Government is looking forward to working with the new administration.” “In a complex security political situation as the one we currently experience, transatlantic cooperation is crucial,” the statement said. It noted that it had no comment on Greenland except for it “not being for sale, but open for cooperation.” Trump canceled a 2019 visit to Denmark after his offer to buy Greenland was rejected by Copenhagen, and ultimately came to nothing . He also suggested Sunday that the U.S. is getting “ripped off” at the Panama Canal. “If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America, in full, quickly and without question,” he said. Panama President José Raúl Mulino responded in a video that “every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to,” but Trump fired back on his social media site, “We’ll see about that!” The president-elect also posted a picture of a U.S. flag planted in the canal zone under the phrase, “Welcome to the United States Canal!” The United States built the canal in the early 1900s but relinquished control to Panama on Dec. 31, 1999, under a treaty signed in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter . The canal depends on reservoirs that were hit by 2023 droughts that forced it to substantially reduce the number of daily slots for crossing ships. With fewer ships, administrators also increased the fees that shippers are charged to reserve slots to use the canal. The Greenland and Panama flareups followed Trump recently posting that “Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State" and offering an image of himself superimposed on a mountaintop surveying surrounding territory next to a Canadian flag. Trudeau suggested that Trump was joking about annexing his country, but the pair met recently at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida to discuss Trump's threats to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods. “Canada is not going to become part of the United States, but Trump’s comments are more about leveraging what he says to get concessions from Canada by putting Canada off balance, particularly given the precarious current political environment in Canada,” Farnsworth said. “Maybe claim a win on trade concessions, a tighter border or other things.” He said the situation is similar with Greenland. “What Trump wants is a win," Farnsworth said. The home of the Sounders may now officially become the home for a country during the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. FIFA announced an updated list of potential base camps for countries participating in the World Cup on Thursday that included the Sounders new training center at the former Longacres site in Renton. Adding the Sounders training center is an announcement that’s long been expected and was probably amplified by the visit last month from FIFA President Gianni Infantino to the area that also included a reception and tour of the facility. Seattle is set to host six matches during the tournament beginning in June 2026 – four in the group stage, one in the round of 32 and one in the round of 16. But cities can often serve as both host venues and base camps for various countries. For example, during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the city of Sochi hosted matches while also being the base camp for Brazil and Poland at a couple of venues around the area. The Sounders facility was one of 26 new options added by FIFA that also included a couple of other potential sites in the Pacific Northwest. Across the state, Gonzaga University in Spokane is listed as a possible base camp. The Bulldogs’ Luger Field is a grass soccer stadium on the bank of the Spokane River. Another site in the region listed was Boise State University where the Broncos play at the Boas Soccer Complex. Any of the three Pacific Northwest locations would seem likely options for a country that ends up with the majority of its group stage games on the West Coast. Other cities are expected to be added as potential base camps for the 48 participating countries throughout 2025. Portland is not currently listed as a possible base camp but would seem a likely candidate with a few options in the area. The final decisions on what cities each country will call home for the tournament are expected a little over a year from now, shortly after the draw.
