Hampton tweeted Wednesday that he has been promoted to offensive coordinator. Hampton has been on the VMI staff since January 2023. Wade Taylor IV poured in 24 points, Manny Obaseki put his team ahead for good with a fastbreak dunk and No. 20 Texas A&M staved off Rutgers 81-77 to take fifth place at the Players Era Festival on Saturday in Las Vegas. In a game with seven ties and 10 lead changes, the Aggies (6-2) took a 78-77 lead when Solomon Washington pulled out a defensive rebound and heaved it up court for Obaseki to convert a two-handed slam with 2:12 to play. Rutgers lost a pass out of bounds, and Taylor made two free throws for a three-point game. Rutgers freshman star Dylan Harper went to the rim in the final seconds but had his shot blocked by Washington. Washington had 11 points, five rebounds and four blocks for Texas A&M. Henry Coleman III and Obaseki also finished with 11 points. For Rutgers (5-3), Ace Bailey led the way with 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Jeremiah Williams scored 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting and Harper had 18 points. Centers Emmanuel Ogbole and Lathan Sommerville each fouled out. Texas A&M scored nine of the last 12 points of the game after trailing by as many as nine earlier in the half. And in about a minute at Lakeside Country Club in Surrey, England, Paul Lim accomplished the extraordinary. It is a feat which has lived in the record books of darting history – the first player to hit a perfect nine-dart finish at a world championship. The accomplishment landed him £52,000 – about US$92,600 then – and while he was eliminated in the quarter-finals, Lim won the hearts of darts fans worldwide. Fast forward 34 years, and Lim was back where it all started. His features were no longer as youthful, his vision was no longer as sharp, and his polo t-shirt bore the flag of a different country. But it's the same man – the "Singapore Slinger". On Dec 8, Lim lost in the final of the WDF World Darts Championship after a fairytale run. Ireland's Shane McGuirk, 29, beat the 70-year-old Singaporean 6-3 at Lakeside. FROM LOCAL PUB TO WORLD STAGE In the past decades, Lim has travelled the globe, but his story started in England. After he completed his National Service in the 1970s, Lim packed his bags and headed to London. "I went through different jobs just to survive," he told CNA. "Eventually I was able to hunt down a hotel because I wanted to be a chef." With the help of the hotel's head chef, Lim enrolled himself in a cookery course. "Every morning I would go to college ... After I finished college, I would go back to the hotel and work from afternoon to dinner service, which was about 10 to 11 at night," he recalled. It was at a local pub where he was first introduced to darts by other chefs. They competed every Friday night, with everybody chipping in with 50 pence. The winner's prize? A bottle of whisky. Playing a number of sports as a youngster meant that Lim had good hand-eye coordination, and he was quickly drawn to the dartboard. "I found that darts is a very interesting sport ... I straightaway bought a dartboard and put it in the apartment," he said. "And I could practice whether it was snowing, whether it was raining, whenever I wanted. I spent a lot of time doing that, and I eventually just became good." A number of years later, Lim returned to Singapore where he worked as a chef at the now-defunct Marco Polo hotel. During his time back, he competed in his first Singapore Open and won the tournament. But the opportunity to further his career as a head chef of a French restaurant came knocking and Lim moved to Papua New Guinea. A CHANGE OF SCENERY Lim enjoyed the change in environment. "It was different but I've always loved the sea, I loved fishing and Papua New Guinea is a great place for that," he said. Lim represented Papua New Guinea in his first international competition, the Asia-Pacific Cup, where he won his event. It was during that tournament that he met American darts player Jerry Umberger, who recommended that Lim move to the United States and compete in the professional darts circuit. "He said that in the USA we have the darts circuit where there is prize money. Every week there's a tournament somewhere in America and you just have to find where to go," recalled Lim. Lim first moved to Boston. But with the weather proving too cold, he settled down in California and worked at a pub restaurant as a chef. "It was in a darting environment so it really kind of suited me very well ... I worked from Monday to Thursday and on Friday I would fly to tournaments," he said. "I didn't know how I was going to be doing (on the circuit) ... so I had to have a job to sustain my travel and pay my rent and things like that." As Lim made a name for himself on the circuit, sponsors eventually came on board. ONE STEP AT A TIME Prior to that historic showing at the 1990 World Championship, Lim had never made it past the early stages of the competition. But that year, everything changed. "It was a blast. I can't describe it. Until this very day, I still get goosebumps thinking about it," said Lim, who represented the United States at that tournament. He remembers his achievement vividly to this day. The money he earned, which far exceeded the amount awarded to the tournament winner, also came in handy for Lim, who used it to start his own darts business. Over the years, he has continued to compete in major tournaments while working as a consultant for an electronic darts company. But Lakeside Country Club has always had a special place in his heart. "I was excited to be back there again after so many years," he said, this time wearing the Singapore flag. Going into this year's WDF World Darts Championship, Lim's goal was to take it one game at a time – and he saw off challenge after challenge. "What's going to happen, you never know. But I go with the intent that I want to do well," he said. Lim first beat the Netherlands' Moreno Blom 2-0, then Hong Kong's Leung Kai Fan 3-2. The match against Leung, a close friend of Lim's, was particularly tough, he said. Prior to the tournament draw, Leung had invited Lim to stay at his home and prepare for the event. "He's the guy I spent time with and he's the guy who looked after me ... It's always difficult," added Lim. Lim's fairytale run continued, as he beat Scotland's Gary Stone 3-2, Dutchman Jarno Bottenberg 4-3 and American Jason Brandon 5-0. "I always think one step at a time. If I win one step at a time, I'll be in the final," said Lim. But he fell short in his bid to become the oldest darts world champion on Dec 8. McGuirk took home the winner's cheque of £50,000 (US$63,500), while Lim collected £16,000. "I did prove a point that age is not really a vital thing," he said. POWERED BY PASSION Things have changed over the years, admitted Lim. These days, he no longer has as much stamina to compete in a full-day tournament. "Stamina is very important," he said. "(A) 70-year-old gets tired a lot easier. The funny thing is I have gone through this (sport) for over 40 years now and I've never felt that I could get tired. Until maybe when I was about 68." Earlier this year, he switched to using glasses after experiencing blurred vision. "It was a struggle to get used to it," Lim admitted. "I kept practising with my glasses on at home until it became secondary." While physical problems can be an issue when it comes to darts, having a strong mindset is key, he stressed. "A lot of people can be great dart players but if your mindset is weak, you're going (to be) rattled ... and you're going to do everything differently." He wants to continue competing for as long as he can. "At the back of my mind, I know one day it will stop. But as of right now, I just don't feel that day is coming," said Lim. What helps is that Lim enjoys not just the competitive nature of darts but interacting with supporters. "In every sport, (it is) for yourself but you've got to think about the fans out there and the people that support you. It gives me a lot of joy, it really does," he added. "(People ask me): 'How come you're always smiling?' It's supposed to be a happy moment. I'm able to play a sport that I love, and I'm able to make a living out of it. What else would you want to ask for?" When he decides to call it a day competitively, Lim intends to keep promoting the sport. "I want to bring joy to other people (through) darts and I think it's good for them," he said. "I'm living proof. I'm 70 years old right now, I can still move around and I'm happy doing it ... Each boxer was able to use his full arsenal to win the fight. At her studio in Los Angeles, Australian artist Jemima Wyman is trying to come to terms with the cancellation of her 30-year survey show. or signup to continue reading The internationally-known Palawa artist could have shown her career survey at a range of prestigious institutions, but went with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, where she has both studied and taught. "It has a really special place in my heart, and that's why I was excited to do the 30 year survey show there, because I had such a long relationship with the institution," she told AAP. In November, Wyman was told QUT's Art Museum was cutting its 2025 program, and her show would be axed. The free-to-visit museum at QUT's Garden Point campus has eight staff and describes itself as one of Queensland's premier visual arts institutions. The university is facing financial challenges due to funding shortfalls, but staff would not be impacted by any of the university's current plans, a QUT spokesperson said. "We have had to make a number of difficult decisions with regard to pausing activities across a number of areas of the university, including some programming at QUTAM for 2025," they told AAP. It appears the museum will show one exhibition of items from the university's art collection during 2025. Wyman is not the only artist left hanging, with an exhibition of two of Australia's most significant ceramicists, Vipoo Srivilasa and the late Gwyn Hanssen Pigott also affected, as well as a group show by six Barkandji/Barkindji artists. University museums do more to support first nations artists than any other type of gallery, according to Penelope Benton of the National Association for the Visual Arts. "This kind of decision is hugely impactful for the working lives of Australian artists," she said. Wyman's exhibition had been expected to tour to UNSW in Sydney, followed by the Samstag Museum at the University of South Australia. The artist said she's worried the university is technically shutting down the museum. "If you're only having one show a year, and it's from the collection, then you're not really being an active institution in terms of supporting contemporary artists," she said. "It sounds to me like a strategy to not ring alarm bells ... a strategy to step down the museum and eventually shut it down completely." University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Margaret Sheil has apologised to Wyman in an email, saying the university has to make tough decisions, with departments prioritising teaching and research until the budget returns to surplus. Professor Sheil also cited a rapid decline in creative and fine arts enrolments, and said fine arts degrees and staff are now based at QUT's Kelvin Grove campus, several kilometres away from the museum. There have been a series of recent cuts to arts courses at institutions in the region, including at the University of Queensland, James Cook University, Queensland College of the Arts, and Southern Cross University. "It's a shame that it's all being cut, I think it will be really detrimental to the region," said Wyman. As uncertainty grows surrounding Jimmy Butler's future with the Heat, several teams across the league are weighing the benefits of making a run for the veteran swingman. According to NBA insider Mike Scotto, two Texas teams are at the top of the list for Butler and will be waiting with an offer if he splits from the Heat . “Within league circles, there’s been quiet discourse about whether the Houston Rockets or Dallas Mavericks will eventually land Butler, a Texas native, should he and Miami decide to part ways," wrote Scotto . "For now, however, the Rockets are among the top teams with a young core, and the Mavericks remain a contender in the tightly competitive Western Conference. It’s also worth noting executives who’ve checked in on Butler got the impression that Miami wants to figure out their star’s future after the season.” Butler, 35, is a 13-year NBA veteran who has played various stints over his career. His latest team, the Miami Heat, has come with the most success for Butler, having been to the Finals twice since 2020. For his career, he is averaging 18.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game on 47.1% shooting. As one of the top two-way players in the game and an intense competitor, Butler is a favorite among the fans and he's been viewed as the perfect star to lead the franchise's legendary "Heat culture." But after several failed playoff runs and a declining performance in the regular season, there are rumblings that both sides are open to a breakup. With a $52.4 million player option for the 2025-26 campaign, Butler can opt out and become a free agent as early as July but the Heat could trade him sooner if they believe that he's likely to leave. In Texas, the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets are often at odds but they both have a major interest in Butler -- a two-way veteran forward who will drastically raise their ceiling. In the case of the Mavericks, Butler's defensive versatility will fill an especially big need for the Mavericks and with Luka Doncic as his teammate, there would be enough spacing to get him some clean looks around the basket. If you add Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson to the equation, the Mavericks suddenly look like the most dangerous team in the West. The Houston Rockets aren't quite as stacked as the Mavericks, but they are currently 2nd in the West at 15-6. As winners of 8 in their last 10 games, the Rockets are very much on an upward trajectory, and adding a proven veteran like Butler would only enhance their young and versatile roster. He could help speed the development of Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., and Amen Thompson. With the Heat at 9-10 so far this season, it's too early to say which players will be available for them at the deadline but if Jimmy Butler isn't in play then, he will almost surely be available in the summer when the Heat may finally be ready for a fresh start. Until then, Butler is going to keep fighting with his current team and he's not going to let petty distractions pull him away from his quest for a title. "Since coming to power in November 2005, we have taken several steps for the development of the agricultural sector and the welfare of farmers, which are now benefiting them. We are continuously working for the benefit of farmers. Before we came to power, no steps were taken by the previous govts for the development of farmers and the agricultural sector. We launched an agricultural roadmap in 2008 and implemented agricultural development programmes, which led to an increase in the production and productivity of crops, fruits, and vegetables," Nitish told reporters after inaugurating the four-day agri exhibition. The exhibition—from November 29 to December 2—features over 125 stalls showcasing cutting-edge farming equipment and technologies. Agricultural equipment manufacturers from 13 states, including Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Punjab, are participating in this annual event, which has been organized consistently since 2011. During his tour of the exhibition, Kumar examined various displays featuring modern agricultural machinery, crop residue management equipment, and horticultural tools. He emphasized that farmers should adopt these technological innovations to enhance agricultural productivity. The state govt has made arrangements for as many as 4,500 farmers from across the state to visit the fair daily free of cost. Daily workshops are being conducted to train farmers in the operation and maintenance of modern agricultural equipment. A highlight of the exhibition is the state's Agricultural Mechanization Scheme, which offers subsidies on 110 types of farming equipment. The scheme provides up to 80% subsidy on crop residue management tools, which would promote sustainable farming practices.
