Tweets by TomHousenickWashington, Dec 8 (AP) President Joe Biden said Sunday that the sudden collapse of the Syrian government under Bashar Assad is a “fundamental act of justice” after decades of repression, but it was “a moment of risk and uncertainty” for the Mideast. Biden spoke at the White House hours after after rebel groups completed a takeover of the country after more than a dozen years of violent civil war and decades of leadership by Assad and his family. Biden said the United States was unsure of Assad's whereabouts, but was monitoring reports he was seeking refuge in Moscow. The outgoing Biden administration and President-elect Donald Trump were working to make sense of new threats and opportunities across the Middle East. Biden credited action by the US and its allies for weakening Syria's backers — Russia, Iran and Hezbollah. He said “for the first time” that they could no longer defend Assad's grip on power. “Our approach has shifted the balance of power in the Middle East," Biden said, after a meeting with his national security team at the White House. Trump said Sunday that Assad had fled his country, which his family had ruled for decades, because close ally Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, “was not interested in protecting him any longer.” Those comments on Trump's social media platform came a day after he used another post to decry the possibility of the US intervening militarily in Syria to aid the rebels, declaring, “THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT." The Biden administration had no intention of intervening, according to President Joe Biden's national security adviser. The US has about 900 troops in Syria, including forces working with Kurdish allies in the opposition-held northeast to prevent any resurgence of the Islamic State group. Biden said he intended those for troops to remain, adding that US forces on Sunday conducted “dozens” of what he called “precision air strikes" on Islamic State camps and operations in Syria. The Syrian opposition that brought down Assad is led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The Biden administration has designated the group as a terrorist organisation and says it has links to al-Qaida, although Hayat Tahrir al-Sham says it has since broken ties with al-Qaida. “We will remain vigilant,” Biden said. “Make no mistake, some of the rebel groups that took down Assad have their own grim record of terrorism and human rights abuses.” He added that the groups are “saying the right things now.” “But as they take on greater responsibility, we will assess not just their words, but their actions,” Biden said. Assad's fall adds to an already tense situation throughout much of region on many fronts, including Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza and its fragile cease-fire with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Trump, who takes office Jan. 20, 2025, made a connection between the upheaval in Syria and Russia's war in Ukraine, noting that Assad's allies in Moscow, as well as in Iran, the main sponsor of Hamas and Hezbollah, “are in a weakened state right now.” Vice President-elect JD Vance, a veteran of the U.S.-led war in Iraq, wrote on own social media Sunday to express skepticism about the insurgents. “Many of the rebels' are a literal offshoot of ISIS. One can hope they've moderated. Time will tell,” he said, using another acronym for the group. Trump has suggested that Assad's ouster can advance the prospects for an end to fighting in Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia in February 2022. Trump wrote that Putin's government “lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine” and the Republican called for an immediate cease-fire, a day after meeting in Paris with the French and Ukrainian leaders. Daniel B. Shapiro, a deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East, said the American military presence will continue in eastern Syria but was “solely to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS and has nothing to do with other aspects of this conflict.” “We call on all parties in Syria to protect civilians, particularly those from Syria's minority communities to respect international military norms and to work to achieve a resolution to include the political settlement,” Shapiro said. “Multiple actors in this conflict have a terrible track record to include Assad's horrific crimes, Russia's indiscriminate aerial bomb bombardment, Iranian-back militia involvement and the atrocities of ISIS," he added. Shapiro, however, was careful not to directly say Assad had been deposed by the insurgents. “If confirmed, no one should shed any tears over the Assad regime,” he said. As they pushed toward the Syrian capital of Damascus, the opposition freed political detainees from government prisons. The family of missing US journalist Austin Tice renewed calls to find him. “To everyone in Syria that hears this, please remind people that we're waiting for Austin,” Tice's mother, Debra, said in comments that hostage advocacy groups spread on social media. "We know that when he comes out, he's going to be fairly dazed & he's going to need lots of care & direction. Direct him to his family please!” Tice disappeared in 2012 outside Damascus, amid intensification of what became a civil war stretching more than a decade. We've remained committed to returning him to his family,” Biden said at the White House. "We believe he's alive, we think we can get him back but we have no direct evidence to that yet. And Assad should be held accountable.” The president added: “We have to identify where he is." The incident occurred on Saturday at Jagaba’s block-moulding industry along the Eastern Bye-Pass in Minna, the state capital. Abdulhakeem is accused of stabbing the retired official in the head and fleeing with his Toyota Camry. An eyewitness, Nuhu Abubakar, told reporters that the attack was sudden and unprovoked. “The incident happened on Saturday. The panel beater came to the Jagaba industry to fix the car. There was no argument. “The next thing we saw was that the panel beater entered the car and drove away while the perm sec was lying in a pool of his blood and writhing in pain,” Abubakar stated. Jagaba, who previously served in the Niger State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the arrest of the suspect and recovery of the stolen vehicle. Abiodun revealed that Abdulhakeem had conspired with some of Jagaba’s workers to carry out the crime. “On December 7, 2024, at about 3 pm, a report of an incident of culpable homicide was made at Tudun-Wada Division, that at about 11:30 am, a yet-to-be-identified person(s) trespassed into a block industry located along Eastern Bye-pass, Minna, attacked and stabbed one Adamu Jagaba on the head and made away with his vehicle. “The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he gave up the ghost and was confirmed dead,” he stated, adding that police operatives visited the scene. During interrogation, Abdulhakeem reportedly confessed to the killing and implicated others in the crime. He revealed that some of Jagaba’s workers provided information to facilitate the attack. “Fortunately, on the local circulation of the vehicle’s details to all police points and formation within the state, on the same date at about 7 pm, the Police Crack Squad of the Command intercepted the vehicle along Bosso Estate Road, Minna, with the suspect named Fatiyah Abdulhakeem, aged 18 years of Tayi Village via Bosso Minna. “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being the victim’s car painter and visited him at his block industry located at Eastern Bye-pass, via Maitumbi, opposite PDP Secretariat Minna. “He said after discussing changing the vehicle bumper, he deliberately stabbed the deceased severally on the head and neck, and also hit him multiple times with a stapler in the office and made away with his Toyota Camry vehicle with registration number MNA 61 AE. “He confessed further that he conspired with some of the deceased’s workers, who gave him the target and more information in carrying out the crime. “He said he has other gang members he does such heinous acts with, as he mentioned their names for investigation,” Abiodun added. The command’s spokesperson revealed that an effort is ongoing to apprehend the members and the suspect will be charged in court for prosecution immediately after the investigation. The New England Patriots added another "Worst Loss of the Season" nominee Saturday as they were blown out by the Los Angeles Chargers in front of their home crowd , 40-7. Just about everything that could go wrong, did go wrong for the Patriots in the embarrassing defeat. In what NBC Sports Boston's Patriots insider Tom E. Curran labeled an "unprofessional" performance , New England allowed L.A. to score on seven consecutive possessions. The Chargers cruised to victory while dominating the time of possession battle, 40:34 to 19:26. The dismal showing culminated in boos and "Fire Mayo" chants from the Gillette Stadium crowd as the Patriots fell to 3-13. Other than their updated 2025 draft position , there were hardly any positives to take away from Saturday's game. That was reflected in the latest "Stock Watch" with Curran and fellow Pats insider Phil Perry. The duo broke down their "Stock Up, Stock Down" picks in the latest edition of the Patriots Talk Podcast . 🔊 Patriots Talk Podcast: Disastrous day for Patriots puts need for change back on front burner | Listen & Subscribe | Watch on YouTube Cole Strange, OL Curran: "Cole Strange gets a Stock Down for the early snap." Patriots offensive line Perry: "Can we give it to the entire Patriots offensive line? It just felt like Maye was under duress -- it felt like maybe the game where Drake Maye got the most punishment that he has absorbed all season, which is saying something." CB Jonathan Jones and S Kyle Dugger Perry: "On the scene for a lot of Ladd McConkey yards and a Ladd McConkey touchdown where he ran by Jonathan Jones and Kyle Dugger. Can we just add Kyle Dugger as sort of an addendum to the Jonathan Jones Stock Down? Because that was -- you're the free safety on the play, you can't be flat-footed and just have the guy run right by you." Patriots coaching staff Perry: "We have to put the coaches in there. NoneSyria's ousted president Bashar al-Assad and his family are in Moscow, a Kremlin source told Russian news agencies, hours after he fled the country as Islamist-led rebels entered Damascus. The announcement comes as Russia, a key Assad ally, called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the fast-changing situation on the ground in the war-torn country. "Assad and members of his family have arrived in Moscow," the source told the TASS and Ria Novosti news agencies. "Russia granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds," he added. Asked whether Assad was confirmed to be in Moscow, a Western official said they believed that was likely the case and had no reason to doubt Moscow's claim. The Kremlin source also said the rebels who ousted Assad in a lightning offensive "guaranteed the security of Russian army bases and diplomatic institutions on Syria's territory." Russia, Assad's biggest backer along with Iran, holds a naval base in Tartus and a military airfield in Khmeimim. Moscow's forces became militarily involved in the Syrian conflict in 2015, providing support for Assad's forces to crush the opposition in the bloody civil war. "Russia has always been in favor of a political solution to the Syrian crisis. Our starting point is the need to resume negotiations under the auspices of the UN," the Kremlin source added. A Russian representative to the United Nations announced that Moscow had requested an emergency closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Syria for Monday afternoon. "The consequences (of the events in Syria) for this country and the whole region have not yet been measured," the official said on Telegram.Wizkid: ‘You’re Not Able To Make Logical Arguments Again’ – Adeleke’s Aide Blasts Reno Omokri Over Revenue Comment
