The Wanted star Max George has said he is “staying positive” while in hospital waiting for tests that could shine a light on issues with his heart. In a post to Instagram on Thursday the singer, 36, explained that he went to hospital after feeling “really unwell” and added that he needed “a lot more tests” to determine “what surgery I will need to get me back on my feet.” Updating his fans, George posted a video from his hospital bed on Friday, and said he “had a bit of a rough day”. The grant is intended to support a synthetic diesel plant near Carseland, east of Calgary, that would use natural gas and natural gas liquids to produce synthetic diesel, naphtha and wax. “Alberta is the economic engine of Canada, and our job creation and diversification is key to this. We are committed to making Alberta a world leader in petrochemicals and APIP is helping to attract investment, like this Rocky Mountain Clean Fuels project, as we capitalize on opportunities throughout the province,” said Minister of Energy and Minerals Brian Jean. Officials say naphtha is a petroleum fraction that can be used for gasoline blend stock and diluent. The wax — Fischer Tropsch paraffin wax to be specific — can be used for lubricants, hot melt adhesives, paints and coatings. The government says APIP has played a role in attracting billions of dollars in investment to the province and that Rocky Mountain Clean Fuels is critical to the province’s push for energy diversification and efforts to lower emissions. APIP funds up to 12 per cent of an eligible project’s capital costs, only paid out following the completion of construction. For larger projects such as this one, the grant is paid out over three years. APIP was established in October 2020 to help grow the petrochemical manufacturing sector in the province. Three other projects have received funding through the program: Inter Pipeline’s Heartland Petrochemical Complex; Dow Canada’s Fort Saskatchewan Furnace expansion; and Air Products’ Net-Zero Hydrogen complex. “APIP is helping make our province, including rural areas, an attractive jurisdiction for investment. In addition to the good-paying jobs created for construction and operations, the facility will generate economic spinoffs in the Carseland region,” commented Chantelle de Jonge, MLA for Chestermere-Strathmore. Rocky Mountain Clean Fuels recently opened its $173 million facility and production started at the end of November. The facility is currently producing about 220 barrels per day (bpd) of synthetic diesel, naphtha and wax, and is expected to produce 500 bpd at full capacity, Alberta officials report. They add that the project has created 900 jobs between construction and operations. Ald. Gilbert Villegas, 36th, hand-delivered his message Thursday to Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Dr. Tony Sanders, state superintendent of education. “Various media outlets have published disturbing reports of conduct on the part of some personnel associated with Chicago Public Schools, potentially implicating unfair labor practices and breaches of fiduciary duty,” Villegas wrote. CTU’s contract expired in June and bargaining has been ongoing for months — ramping up recently as both sides make public their frustrations with negotiations. CTU members argue that the election of Donald J. Trump adds urgency as the nation’s new leader promises to dismantle the Department of Education and lead the largest deportation efforts in the history of the United States. Meanwhile, some aldermen — like Villegas — have questioned the school board’s alignment with Mayor Brandon Johnson and the powerful teachers union that helped him rise to power. The mayor is a former teacher and CTU organizer. “We have conflicts of interest just all over the place,” Villegas said in an interview with the Tribune. “I want to make sure that the teachers have a fair contract, but I also want to make sure that the taxpayers are also protected as well. I don’t feel that (the) second part is being taken into consideration.” The letter urges the importance of ethical governance within CPS. Villegas suggests that the Chicago Teachers Union and board members are “cutting out” the district’s chief of staff, Pedro Martinez, in collective bargaining negotiations. Under the Illinois School Code, Martinez has exclusive statutory authority to negotiate collective bargaining agreements, Villegas wrote. Villegas called the board’s discussions of contract negotiations ahead of time “troubling.” The board’s role, he said, is “to wait until the CEO CPS and their staff have agreed to a contract ... and then the board is to approve the contract” after getting briefed. In a post on social media, CTU said the board is not “colluding” with the union during contract negotiations. CTU called the letter “an absurd and legally incoherent accusation.” “There isn’t an organization in America where the CEO gets to operate independently from its board of directors or a school district in America where a superintendent gets to override the school board,” CTU wrote. Ultimately, the CEO and board are supposed to have a collaborative relationship. The CEO reports to the board, which studies the needs of the students and community. According to the district’s board rules, Martinez negotiates all collective bargaining agreements on behalf of the board and submits tentative agreements to the board for adoption and approval. The board and CEO have been at odds for months, however, over a financial dispute that led to the resignation of all seven members in early October. Johnson appointed a new board just days later. The union and district are getting closer to a resolution at the bargaining table, both union and district officials said Thursday. But the letter suggests that lines between the distinct Board of Education and the CTU are being blurred in murky ways. Beyond concerns about overstepping the CEO’s authority, Villegas wrote about how some board members participating in negotiations have a direct connection to CTU, “presenting a clear conflict between CPS interests and CTU interests.” Villegas cited a 1984 Illinois Appellate Court case between the Board of Education of Niles Township and the Regional Board of School Trustees of Cook County that he said emphasized the invalidity of board decisions when there are conflicts of interest. Moving forward, Villegas directed the two Illinois state officials and recipients of the letter to investigate whether the involvement of one or more school board members in CTU collective bargaining matters constitutes a breach of labor practices and to provide an opinion on how the district or public can respond. What We Know About Brian Thompson’s Murder Thompson, 50, was the CEO of the health insurance division of the $550 billion UnitedHealth Group and was in New York City on Wednesday for UnitedHealth Group’s investor meeting. He was shot from behind just before 7 a.m. on Dec. 4 outside of the New York Hilton Midtown—where the meeting was being held—and was hit in the back and right calf, after which the suspect fled the area on foot and on an electric bike. A Minnesota resident, Thompson had served as chief executive since April 2021 and had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004. A video of the shooting showed the suspect walk out behind Thompson—who did not have a security detail—before firing multiple times. Prior to Mangione’s arrest, police said they believed the shooting was “a brazen targeted attack” and searched New York City before saying they believed the suspect had left the city on a bus. Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News “there had been some threats,” but didn’t provide details on what the threats were. Thompson had two sons, one who just graduated from high school and one still in high school. Police had been searching for the gunman by utilizing diving teams in Central Park, flying helicopters, searching through security cameras in the area, maintaining drones and using dogs. They released several photos of the suspected shooter since Wednesday. What Do We Know About Luigi Mangione? Mangione, a Maryland native, was last known to be living in Honolulu, has no prior arrest history in New York or elsewhere in the country, and he may have attended college in Pennsylvania, police said. Social media pages that appeared to be Mangione’s said he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with bachelor's and master's degrees in computer and information science in 2020, after attending the Gilman School for high school. A LinkedIn page appearing to belong to Mangione describes internships at the Johns Hopkins Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics and Firaxis Games before going on to work as an engineer for TrueCar, a car shopping website based in California, where he’d been employed for four years. The Times also reported Mangione worked as a counselor in the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies Program in 2019. How Was Luigi Mangione Caught? New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mangione was recognized in a McDonald’s in Altoona and was reported to local police, who then found he had “multiple fraudulent IDs,” a U.S. passport, a firearm and suppressor similar to what was used in the murder and a “handwritten document that speaks to both his motivation and mindset.” Officers reportedly asked Mangione if he was in New York recently, which resulted in him becoming quiet and shaking, according to a description of his arrest. A man named Larry who said he was a regular at the McDonald’s told Fox News his friend recognized Mangione and said he “looks like the shooter from New York,” but Larry thought he was kidding—“but then as it turned out, it was him.” Though his face was largely covered in most pictures law enforcement released, officials credited the images that were circulating of Mangione for him eventually being spotted and taken into custody. Pennsylvania State Police released a new photo Tuesday morning of Mangione eating what appears to be a McDonald’s hash brown with his mask down and wearing a beanie and dark coat. They are asking for help and information about Mangione’s “travel and recent whereabouts in Pennsylvania,” though Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said authorities believe Mangione had been all over the state and officials had “already identified businesses, for example, that he frequented in this area and activities that he engaged in.” A hotel clerk in Altoona told ABC News that Mangione tried to get a room at the hotel—which is about a 17-minute walk from McDonald’s—the morning he was arrested, but the hotel didn’t have any clean rooms, so Mangione, who the clerk described as “cagey, just looking around, making sure he wasn't being watched,” was turned away. But there was one thing missing: you. You sat politely in the darkness, sipping your soda and nibbling your popcorn, when what you really want to do was belt out the tunes you know by heart. And soon you can. Universal Pictures this week announced that approximately 1,000 theaters across the United States — including several in the Chicago area — will offer “sing-along” screenings of “Wicked” on Christmas Day. The show opened in theaters Nov. 22. Jim Orr, president of domestic theatrical distribution for Universal Pictures, said in a statement that the screenings will “offer fans a unique opportunity to become part of the story they’ve embraced so enthusiastically. There’s something extraordinarily special about experiencing this beloved musical together as a community, and we’re thrilled to create that opportunity this holiday season.” And if you only know, say, the chorus to “Popular,” the screenings will also feature subtitles. Until this week’s announcement, AMC Theatres had made it clear, with a movie-specific pre-show announcement, that it didn’t want patrons singing along during “Wicked.” “At AMC Theatres, silence is golden. No talking, no texting, no singing, no wailing, no flirting and absolutely no name-calling,” says an announcer over snippets of the movie. According to some movie-goers on social media, there have been problems with folks applying green face paint to try to look like the character Elphaba, played by Erivo. One TikTok video features a young woman painting her face green before heading out to an AMC theater, where she says she was told to remove her makeup. “This the dumbest rule I’ve ever heard,” the woman says on the video. But go to AMC’s website and that rule is spelled out: “We love it when our guests dress up for the occasion, however, no weapons, even ‘prop’ weapons, can be brought in. Also, face paint, helmets, masks (except for standard face masks used explicitly for health and safety reasons), or anything that covers the face are prohibited.” Movie theaters across the United States banned face paint, masks and prop weapons following a 2012 screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colorado, in which James Holmes — dressed head to toe in body armor — killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Holmes went on trial and was later convicted on all charges. He is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. Plenty of folks also have been pulling out cell phones and posting videos of parts of “Wicked” online. “We have no problem with singing, but cell phone videos would be an issue for copyright reasons,” said Chris Johnson, CEO of Classic Cinemas, a small theater chain headquartered in Downers Grove.
