panalo999 app Police arrested a 26-year-old man on Monday in the Manhattan killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO after they say a Pennsylvania McDonald's worker alerted authorities to a customer who resembled the suspected gunman. New Delhi: Replacing the century-old criminal laws with a new set of legislations for introducing a modern and technology-driven criminal justice system, rolling out the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act and fire-fighting to check unabated violence in Manipur kept the Union home ministry busy in 2024. Assisting the Election Commission in holding the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir without major incidents and bringing down the violence in Naxal-affected states and northeastern region are the other key highlights of the country’s crucial ministry. While the population enumeration exercise Census continues to be on hold for past four years as no decision has been taken by the ministry as to when it will be carried out, the ministry created five year districts in Ladakh and renamed Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands as Sri Vijaya Puram during the year. The three new criminal laws — Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam — replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872 respectively. The new laws came into effect from July 1. Home Minister Amit Shah, who piloted the legislations, said the new laws would give priority to providing justice, unlike the colonial-era laws that gave primacy to penal action. “These laws are made by Indians, for Indians and by an Indian Parliament and marks the end of colonial criminal justice laws,” he said. Shah said the laws were not just about changing the nomenclature but bringing about a complete overhaul. “Soul, body and spirit of the new laws are Indian,” he said. The new laws brought in a modern justice system, incorporating provisions such as Zero FIR, online registration of police complaints, summonses through electronic modes such as SMS and mandatory videography of crime scenes for all heinous crimes. According to home ministry officials, the new laws have tried to address some of the current social realities and crimes and are going to provide a mechanism to effectively deal with these, keeping in view the ideals enshrined in the Constitution. The CAA, which was enacted in December 2019 for granting Indian nationality to persecuted Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who came to India on or before December 31, 2014, was rolled out in March and the first set of 14 people were granted Indian citizenship under the law in May. Shah termed the occasion of granting Indian citizenship under the CAA as a “historic day”, saying the decades-long wait of those who faced religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan is over. After the enactment in 2019, the CAA got the president’s assent a few days later but the rules under which the Indian citizenship were supposed to be granted were issued only on March 11 after over a delay of four years. The passing of the CAA in 2019 sparked protests in different parts of the country with agitators terming it “discriminatory”. Over a hundred people had lost their lives during the anti-CAA protests or police action in various parts of the country. To allay fears of a section of Muslims and students regarding the CAA, the home ministry, a day after the CAA rules were issued, asserted that the Indian Muslims need not worry as the new legislation would not impact their citizenship and has nothing to do with the community which enjoys equal rights as their Hindu brethren. The ministry made it clear that “no Indian citizen would be asked to produce any document to prove his citizenship after this Act”. Intermittent violence continues to rock Manipur, where the first bout of ethnic clash between majority Meiteis and tribal Kukis was witnessed in May 2023. Even after the death of about 260 people, injury to hundreds and displacement of thousands of people, peace continues to be elusive in the northeastern state. Though there have been efforts from the central government to bring the warring communities into negotiating table, sporadic violence continues there. Members of the ruling BJP were also not spared. Mobs set fire to the residences of several BJP legislators, one of whom is a senior minister, and a Congress MLA in various districts of Imphal Valley in November besides making a foiled attempt to storm the ancestral house of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Seeing the fragile situation, the Centre in November reimposed the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Manipur’s six police station areas, including the violence-hit Jiribam. On December 24, the Centre appointed former union home secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla as new Manipur governor, in an apparent bid to help itself find a lasting peace. However, it is to be seen how Bhalla will walk through the difficult terrain of the sensitive state. Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a relatively peaceful assembly elections, which was held after a gap of 10 years. According to a presentation given by the home ministry to a parliamentary panel, there has been over 70 per cent decline in terror-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019, when Article 370 was scrapped and the erstwhile state was bifurcated into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Continuing its thrust on comprehensive development of villages located in remote areas along the border with China, the government allocated Rs 1,050 crore for 2024-25 under the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) that will benefit select villages in 19 districts in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. Before his death today, Jimmy Carter defied illness and death for years. When his melanoma spread to his brain in 2015, he drew praise for announcing it publicly. Even as he underwent treatment, he continued to teach Sunday school in his home town's Baptist church. Within months, he announced that he was cancer-free. Four years later, Carter fell at least three times, at one point breaking a hip and at another requiring 14 stitches. Each time he bounced back, even showing up for a Habitat for Humanity home-building project shortly after one stumble. But he has slowly retreated from public life lately, making fewer and fewer appearances or statements and was unable to attend President Biden's inauguration in January 2021. However, he lived long enough to outlast two presidents who followed him and his own vice president, Walter Mondale. He became the longest-living president in March 2019 when he passed former President George H.W. Bush, who died four months before. Although Carter, nicknamed Jimmy Cardigan after once wearing a jumper for a televised speech, left the White House after one of the biggest landslide defeats of the modern era, he was one of very few US leaders to be memorialised while still alive. The evolution of his legacy was unusual as he had such a long period between the end of his unpopular presidency and the announcement at the weekend that he would undergo no further treatment to die peacefully at his home. Carter's time in the White House was marred by his struggles to respond to formidable challenges, including a major energy crisis, high inflation, and unemployment. He took office after Gerald Ford left the entire US government in disarray. Carter entered the Oval Office facing mounting challenges - an energy crisis, Soviet aggression and, above all, a deep mistrust of leadership by voters. In foreign affairs, he reopened US relations with China and tried to broker peace in the historic Arab-Israeli conflict, but was damaged late in his term by a hostage crisis in Iran. Carter's diagnosis of America's "crisis of confidence" did little to boost his flagging popularity, and in 1980 he was defeated in the general election by Ronald Reagan. Over the following decades, Carter built a distinguished career as a diplomat, humanitarian and author, pursuing conflict resolution in countries around the globe. He was awarded the Noble Peace Prize in 2002 "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." Born in Plains, Georgia, in October 1924, Carter attended the US Naval Academy graduating in 1946. Already, he had a solid moral compass installed in him by his nurse mother, "Miz" Lillian. She set an example for her son by crossing the strict lines of segregation in 1920s Georgia to counsel poor African American women on health care. Shortly after passing out of the navy, he married Rosalynn Smith, having four children together. But tragedy struck in July 1953 as while he was preparing to serve as an engineering officer on the submarine Seawolf, his father, Earl, died from cancer. Carter returned home and was able to rebuild his family's struggling peanut warehouse business after a crippling drought. Ironically the legume became the symbol of his presidential campaign. Active in community affairs and a deacon at the Plains Baptist Church, he launched his political career with a seat on his local board of education. In 1962, he won the election to the Georgia State Senate as a Democrat, running for the governor's office four years later, finishing a disappointing third. The loss sent Carter into a depression, which he overcame by finding renewed faith as a born-again Christian. He ran again for the governorship in 1970 and won. A year later, Carter was featured on the cover of Time magazine as one of a new breed of young political leaders in the South, known for their moderate racial views and progressive economic and social policies. Initially, Carter was a political phenomenon, a new-generation Democrat who, after a single term as governor of the Peach State, shocked the political world by beating a host of better-known rivals to capture his party's presidential nomination in 1976. A year later, he would oust the incumbent Republican president, Ford. Over four years in office, he sought to restore trust in government following the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal, ushering in reforms meant to transform politics. He mediated the historic Camp David Accords, making peace between Israel and Egypt, an agreement that remains the foundation of Middle East relations. But a sour economy, rocketing inflation, and a 444-day hostage crisis in Iran where 52 American diplomats were held captive undercut his public support. Ultimately, it cost him his re-election bid, losing to Ronald Reagan in 1980. Carter spent his post-presidency, however, on a series of philanthropic causes around the world, like building houses for the poor, combating disease, promoting human rights in places of repression, monitoring elections and seeking to end conflicts. His work as a former president in many ways came to eclipse his time in the White House, eventually earning him the Nobel Peace Prize and rehabilitating his image in the eyes of many Americans. "Between the time he left office and entered hospice care, he got to sit back and enjoy the adulation of a grateful nation," Jeffrey Engel, the director for the presidential history centre at Southern Methodist University, said. "The passage of time smoothed out the rough edges of his political career. If Carter had died in 1982, there would be less adulation than he is receiving right now." Joseph Crespino, the Jimmy Carter Professor of History at Emory University, called his resilience "remarkable." "Instead of sulking about not winning the second term, he used his influence and prominence from his position in politics to help millions of people and win the Nobel Peace Prize," he said. When asked about regrets, Carter spoke of his in his autobiography "A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety." The former president said he was upset by how his kiss with the Queen Mother was portrayed. He wrote how he didn't regret puckering up to Her Majesty, describing it as "lightly on the cheek" as the pair said goodnight after dinner at Buckingham Place in May 1977. However, much like his presidency, its impact never left those affected most by his actions. To her dying day, the Queen Mother had two hates, as detailed in her 2009 biography - oysters and being kissed by a US president.is a Spanish extravaganza set over one weekend, reuniting us once again with the Defoe family as they swap briefcases for suitcases and head to Barcelona for a destination wedding in the sun-drenched vineyards of Catalonia. As always with , there is plenty of drama in the two standalone episodes which explore themes of love, legacy, and modern marriage. Here is everything we know about episode 1... The first episode of opens with Hannah on a date with a new love interest called Archie and we discover it is two years since we last saw the Defoe family in . Archie seems charming and kind as they play a fun game of 'would you rather' and Hannah seems happy, but when he asks if she would rather have heartache or heartburn she is reminded of Christie and tells Archie that he went to New York and never came back. When Archie goes to the bathroom after asking Hannah 'your place or mine' she has flashbacks to Christie leaving and she flees the bar before Archie comes back. Time then jumps forward three months and we are at a Spanish airport where the whole Defoe family is arriving for a wedding - complete with hen party-style bridal veils. Nina has a new man who is very overly affectionate and no one is impressed, least of all Ruth who announces he has to go! As they wait for a taxi Hannah and Nathan chat about how they are the only ones not in a couple this weekend and Nathan jokes that Hannah had better not try it on becasue Kate wouldn't be happy. They are checking a prenup and decide that it shouldn't be signed... and Nathan announces that he gives the marriage a year, tops. Nina and Rose use the opportunity to tell Nathan about Hannha's dates with Archie and Hannah downplays it and changes the subject by laughing about Nathan's new earring. It turns out it is Hannah and Nathan's daughter, Liv, who is getting married in Barcelona and she arrives in a taxi to collect all her family, thrilled to see them all. They arrive at the vineyard, which belongs to Gael's parents, Valentina and Alvaro, who are there to welcome everyone. The couple are the picture of happiness and talk about Liv and Gael's prenup, joking that they wrote their own on a napkin many years ago. As they are given the guided tour of the fancy vineyard Nathan asks Hannah when she is going to be ready to put their family home up for sale. He wants his share of the capital so that he and Kate can move with their two young children, but Hannah is adamant that while she might have an empty nest at the moment, their kids will be back sooner rather than later. As the Defoes settle into the vineyard's fancy outhouse, Valentina tells Hannah that there are drinks for friends and family on the lawn in an hour and that she really wants her to encourage Liv to sign the prenup. While she gets ready Hannah sees a paper flower that Archie made for her on their last date, not only has she kept it but she has also brought it with her to Spain - but while she is reflecting on Archie, Rose knocks on the door and raids her welcome pack while telling her sister that her boyfriend, Glen, has gone to check out the chapel while Nina also comes in and they talk about Julian, her boyfriend who Rose says is rich but boring! While Nathan reads out the itinerary for the day, taking the mickey out of the organised fun, Rose, Nina and Hannah can't take him seriously with his earring. Meanwhile, Hannah goes inside to get the fizz as Alvaro comes out onto the neighbouring balcony arguing with someone, who turns out to be Archie, the man who Hannah was dating at the start of the episode. Archie is Alvaro's lawyer and family friend, and Hannah has no idea, so when she comes back out onto the balcony she is so shocked to see him standing there that she sprays Cava all over herself. After making a hasty retreat back into her room, an amused Rose and Nina follow her in, full of questions, the penny dropping that this Archie is THE Archie that Hannah has been dating and mysteriously ended things with without warning. While Hannah struggles to recall exactly why she ended things with Archie, Nina is convinced this fate is giving her a second chance at happiness. However, as they gather for the pre-wedding drinks it turns out Nina has told everyone about Archie and her whole family teases her about her former flame being at the wedding. As the drinks get underway Nathan compliments Hannah on how nice she looks while she goes in search of wine. But while she is looking, Rose finds her and points out that Nina's annoying boyfriend Julien has a box-shaped bulge in his suit trouser pocket. Before they can discuss this any further, though, the waiter offers them more wine, which Hannah eagerly accepts but Rose instantly turns it down, making Hannah realise that her little sister is pregnant. Nina overhears them and comes over excitedly to hug Rose, but she doesn't want any fuss becasue she's only 5 or 6 weeks gone and it's too early to get excited after she miscarried the last time she was pregnant. Talk then turns to Archie after Rose and Nina admit to having stalked his socials, and it turns out he has a son a little older than Liv and he likes sunsets and climbing mountains. But as they ask Hannah what is holding her back a glamorous woman comes and takes his arm, and it turns out he has bought a 'friend'. But not everything is as it seems becasue Archie doesn't look very happy with Wren, despite the fact Wren announces to the whole family that they are engaged, which shocks Hannah and she finds more wine to hide her horror. Archie tracks Hannah down while Valentina and Alvaro are making a speech and tries to explain that his decision to come to the wedding was last minute and reminds her that she was the one who walked out on him. Soon it is Hannah's turn to make a speech and while it starts out well things soon turn when she starts talking about trust and it becomes clear that she is talking about Archie. The hens head on their night out and while everyone is enjoying the party Nina seems horrified at the thought of Julian asking her to marry him, but soon she is thinking of other things when Lola, who works at the vineyard, whisks her off to dance. Meanwhile, the stags are sitting around a table at the vineyard, sampling some of Alvaro's best wines and talking about the women in their lives. As Gael sings Liv's praises, Prof Ronnie talks about Ruth and Nathan talks about the love of his life, but accidentally talks about Hannah and not Kate - and when he does talk about Kate it isn't a very glowing report! The focus turns to Archie but instead of describing Wren as the love of his life, he talks about his son, saying he is the one he loves the most in the world. However, as he starts talking about meeting Hannah he is cut off abruptly by Alvaro. After everyone else has left the room, Archie tells Alvaro that he is uncomfortable with what is happening and is worried about Gael and Valentina... Alvaro tells him not to worry and Wren is just playing games, and it turns out the pair of them are hiding a huge secret. At the hen night, Valentina tells Hannah about Archie's first wife and says that he took years to get over her, but recently he started talking about another woman and how brilliant and funny she was. However, Valentina admits that she didn't picture Wren when he was describing his new love, and Hannah realises he was talking about her. As the rest of the hens head to the beach, Nina says she is going to call it a night before going home with Lola. The pair share a kiss at the car and the spark is so strong between them that they end up in bed together. At the vineyard, Nathan lays into Archie about the fact he has hurt Hannah, but Archie corrects him, telling him that it was Hannah who walked out on him, not the other way around. Soon the hen and stag parties are reunited outside the vineyard but Valentina has had enough of Wren being there uninvited and asks her to leave. However, Wren stands her ground and says she needs to ask Alvaro if she wants her to leave, and the penny drops that Archie isn't engaged to Wren but it was Alvaro who gave her the ring. It turns out that Alvaro and Wren have been having an affair and while Valentina races off, devastated, Gael is also heartbroken that his parents' love is all lies and he tells Liv the wedding is off before also running away. Meanwhile, Julian stumbles to bed, oblivious to the fact Lola has just climbed out their bedroom window after a night with Nina, and Glen is listening to a voice note from his kids where they ask 'did she say yes?!' and Rose pretends not to hear. After comforting Liv, Hannah talks with Nathan and he tells her that he misses her and their home together... just as Liv comes to ask him to walk her back to the house. After they have gone, Archie comes to find Hannah and they laugh about her botched speech earlier in the day. He then explains why he pretended to be engaged to Wren, saying he was trying to protect Valentina from Wren and save the wedding - and while he is talking Hannah kisses him. However, it isn't quite a happy ending to the episode because he stops her, saying he doesn't understand her after she walked out on him. Archie then goes to bed, telling Hannah they should talk in the morning, leaving her confused and upset. Where does Hannah's heart lie? With Archie? Or still with Nathan?Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti said an explosion late Friday night that damaged a key water canal was a “terrorist act” and accused groups aligned with Serbia of having been behind it — an accusation Serbia called baseless. Kosovo’s interior minister, Xhelal Svecla, announced the arrest of eight people linked to the explosion and said police seized a large cache of weapons and military equipment during the operation. He said the searches were carried out at 10 locations in northern Kosovo. The searches “to the confiscation of arms, explosives, hundreds of uniforms, and other military gear, which will serve as evidence in criminal proceedings,” he said during a press conference on Saturday evening. The blast in the Zubin Potok municipality of northern Kosovo damaged a canal that carries drinking water to several regions as well as cooling water for the country’s thermal power plants. The incident raised concerns about potential disruptions to essential services, including water and electricity. Local media showed photographs of water leaking from the reinforced canal. “The attack was carried out by professionals, and we believe it comes from groups orchestrated by and directed by Serbia,” Kurti said in the Kosovan capital of Pristina at an emergency press conference after midnight. Kurti said Serbian operatives have the “capacity to carry out such attacks using large quantities of explosives,” without offering specific evidence. Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric fired back against “premature accusations” in a lengthy post on X, saying the blast may have been “a deliberate diversion” orchestrated by Kosovo’s government. He offered financial and technical support to help repair the canal, which is vital to Serb-populated municipalities of Kosovo. Aleksandr Vucic, Serbia’s president, said in Belgrade on Saturday that his country had nothing to do with the incident “and Pristina knows that.” Kosovo’s National Security Council convened an emergency meeting to approve additional security measures for critical infrastructure. Jeff Hovenier, U.S. ambassador to the Balkan nation, and other diplomatic missions, including France and the EU, also condemned what they called an attack. The U.S. is closely monitoring the situation and supports a full investigation, Hovenier said. The incident follows a series of grenade attacks in northern Kosovo targeting police stations and government buildings.
