ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons are back in first place in the NFC South and again in control of their playoff hopes. Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. showed the poise in his first NFL start the Falcons will need to take advantage of their opportunity to end a six-year playoff drought. Powered by a big-play defense that produced two pick-6s, a solid starting debut by Penix and two rushing touchdowns by Bijan Robinson, the Falcons cruised past the hapless New York Giants 34-7 on Sunday. On Sunday night, the Falcons (8-7) received the assist they needed when Tampa Bay lost at Dallas . Because the Falcons swept the Buccaneers, they hold the tiebreaker advantage if they remain tied atop the division. The Falcons have games remaining at Washington on Sunday night and at home against Carolina to close the regular season. If Atlanta wins both games, it would win the division and have a home playoff game. The Falcons are assured of their best record since a 10-6 finish under coach Dan Quinn in 2017, their most recent playoff season. Quinn is in his first season as Washington's coach and has led the Commanders (10-5) to three straight wins, including Sunday's 36-33 victory over Philadelphia. Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, was promoted after coach Raheem Morris benched Kirk Cousins. Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards with one interception on a pass that should have been caught by tight end Kyle Pitts. Penix is not a dual-threat quarterback, but he showed the ability to escape pressure in the pocket that Cousins lacks following his 2023 Achilles tendon injury. The left-hander's superior arm strength also was immediately obvious. Robinson's production provided a safety net for the offense which helped make for a smooth transition to Penix. Robinson had scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards. Robinson has rushed for 10 touchdowns this season. He's the first Atlanta player with 10 more more rushing touchdowns since Devonta Freeman during the 2016 Super Bowl season. Robinson ran for 94 yards on 22 carries and had 103 yards from scrimmage. His 11th game this season with at least 100 yards from scrimmage are the most for the Falcons since Warrick Dunn's 11 in 2005. Morris said Robinson deserves to be considered with Philadelphia's Saquon Barkley in discussions regarding the league's top running backs. “Bijan has been outstanding all year in the things that he’s able to do," Morris said. “He’s special. If it wasn’t for this other guy out in Philly, he’d get a lot more recognition across the league. But that guy is having a special year, and Bijan’s not far behind him.” With kicker Younghoe Koo on injured reserve and watching from the sideline, Riley Patterson was wide left on his first field-goal attempt from 43 yards. Patterson rebounded to make attempts from 52 and 37 yards. Jessie Bates III and Matthew Judon each had a pick-6 to highlight a day of big plays for the defense. Arnold Ebiketie had his fifth sack of the season and added a fumble recovery. Kaden Ellis added a strip-sack. He also has five sacks this season, including sacks in four consecutive games. It is the longest streak for Atlanta since Patrick Kerney had sacks in five straight games in 2001. There was some thought that a change at quarterback could be good news for Pitts, who often seemed to be missing in action with Cousins running the offense. After all, a tight end often is a natural target for quick passes from a rookie making his first start. Instead, Pitts had a poor start to the Penix era when he bobbled his first pass from the left-hander, creating an interception by cornerback Cor’Dale Flott. Pitts caught a 7-yard pass on his only other target. For the season, Pitts has 41 catches for 543 yards and three touchdowns. There will be much interest in this week's injury report after WR Drake London (hamstring) was hurt in the second half. Morris provided an optimistic postgame outlook on London. CB Antonio Hamilton (quad) did not return after leaving the game in the first half. 8: Bates has four interceptions and four forced fumbles. His combined eight forced turnovers lead the NFL. The game against Jayden Daniels and the Commanders is a reminder Penix was only the fourth of six quarterbacks selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Daniels, from LSU, was the No. 2 overall pick behind Caleb Williams by Chicago. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflSocial Justice, Equality, Welfare Bedrock of Cong Govt: Uttam

Manufacturing sector’s struggle for revival LAHORE: The decline in Pakistan’s manufacturing sector is a complex issue influenced by more than just faulty government policies. Inefficiencies within the business sector, poor governance practices and external economic pressures also play significant roles in this downward trajectory. While government policies undeniably shape the manufacturing landscape, their shortcomings often exacerbate existing challenges. For instance, complex and uneven taxation has placed undue burdens on manufacturers, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Inefficient tax collection further raises the cost of doing business, discouraging growth and innovation. Energy costs in Pakistan rank among the highest in the region, making local products uncompetitive compared to those from regional peers like India and Bangladesh. Frequent policy reversals, a lack of long-term planning and limited consultation with industry stakeholders create uncertainty and deter investment. Weak transportation networks and inadequate industrial zones disrupt supply chains and hinder production efficiency. The reliance on imports, coupled with insufficient export facilitation, further stifles the potential of local manufacturers. However, the inefficiency and governance issues within the manufacturing sector itself cannot be ignored. A lack of innovation has left many businesses unable to modernise their production processes, adopt new technologies or invest in research and development (R&D), thereby reducing global competitiveness. Many family-owned manufacturing businesses suffer from nepotism, poor transparency and inadequate succession planning. Cartels in key industries, such as cement and sugar, often prioritise short-term profits over long-term growth, distorting market dynamics and hindering fair competition. Moreover, insufficient investment in employee training and productivity improvements leads to subpar product quality and inefficiencies across the sector. A significant number of manufacturers cater exclusively to the domestic market, failing to meet international standards and thereby missing global opportunities. The state’s inability to enforce quality standards enables local producers to sell subpar products domestically, effectively barring them from entering international markets. External factors, including global recessions, supply chain disruptions and currency depreciation, further exacerbate the challenges faced by Pakistan’s manufacturing sector. Improving governance in Pakistan is a daunting challenge. The country’s governance system suffers from entrenched inefficiencies, corruption and bureaucratic inertia that cannot be dismantled overnight. Many government institutions lack the expertise, autonomy and resources necessary for effective policymaking and implementation. Frequent changes in government and policy direction erode trust, fostering a culture of short-termism among both decision-makers and businesses. Populist measures often take precedence over essential yet politically challenging reforms. Businesses, meanwhile, hesitate to voice concerns or innovate for fear of victimisation, selective taxation or unfair treatment. While challenges persist, there are promising signs of improvement. Initiatives such as digitising tax records and streamlining customs procedures have the potential to reduce corruption and inefficiency. Greater collaboration between the private sector and the government, especially in export-oriented industries, could act as a catalyst for reform. Agreements with international institutions like the IMF often push the government towards structural reforms, albeit slowly. Pakistan’s young population and rising entrepreneurial spirit hold the promise of a more efficient and innovative manufacturing environment. However, in the short term, transformative changes in governance are unlikely due to deeply rooted structural issues and political instability. With sustained efforts in digitalisation, public-private collaboration, and long-term planning, gradual improvements in governance and manufacturing competitiveness can be achieved over time.SEBI takes strict action in front running case, bars 9 entities, seizes over Rs 21 crore

SEAL BEACH, Calif. - An alleged shoplifter got quite the surprise when she found out some shoplifting offenses are now considered a felony in California. "It's a felony?" video shows one of the women saying. "B*tch new laws!" the suspect next to her replies as they sit handcuffed in the back of a patrol car. "Stealing is a felony and this Orange County b*tch. They don’t play." Surveillance video shared Sunday by the Seal Beach Police Department shows three women walking into an Ulta Beauty store, perusing the shelves, then nonchalantly leaving with around $648 worth of stolen merchandise. SUGGESTED: Business owners support Prop 36 amid lootings Another video allegedly shows the same three women going inside a Kohl's store where they allegedly left with around $1,000 worth of merchandise. Surveillance video shared Sunday by the Seal Beach Police Department shows three women walking into an Ulta Beauty store, perusing the shelves, then nonchalantly leaving with around $648 worth of stolen merchandise. Bodycam video shows police officers chasing the women and ultimately arresting them. "A friendly reminder that Proposition 36, which increases punishments for some retail theft and drug possession offenses, went into effect Wednesday morning in California," the Seal Beach PD wrote on Instagram. "Don't steal in Seal!" SUGGESTED: The debate over Prop 36 in California Prop. 36 was a rightward swing of the California political pendulum – a decade ago, voters eased criminal penalties for certain crimes under 2014’s Proposition 47, which was pitched as both a cost-saving measure and a more effective way to combat crime by focusing dollars on treatment instead of incarceration. Then, during the pandemic, the rate of shoplifting and commercial burglaries skyrocketed, especially in Los Angeles, Alameda, San Mateo and Sacramento counties. Statewide, reported shoplifting of merchandise worth up to $950 soared 28% over the past five years , according to the Public Policy Institute of California. That’s the highest observed level since 2000. SUGGESTED: Explaining California's Prop. 36 Combining shoplifting with commercial burglaries, the institute’s researchers found that total reported thefts were 18% higher than in 2019. Now, certain drug offenses and thefts under $950 can be classified as felonies rather than misdemeanors if the suspected perpetrator has two or more past convictions for theft crimes. SUGGESTED: California Prop 36 explained: Increasing penalties for theft and drug trafficking Proponents said the initiative is necessary to close legal loopholes that have made it challenging for law enforcement to punish shoplifters and drug dealers. Opponents, including Democratic state leaders and social justice groups, said it will disproportionately imprison poor people and those with substance-use issues rather than target ringleaders who hire large groups of people to steal goods for resale online. The initiative will also take away drug and mental health funding that comes from savings from incarcerating fewer people. Californians for Safety and Justice, a nonprofit that seeks to reduce prison and jail spending, estimated that Prop. 36 will add 130,000 more people to California jails each year, about 100,000 of them held in jail before trial and about 30,000 serving one-year sentences after their convictions. The Source: This story was reported with information from the Seal Beach Police Department and the Associated Press.
