The minister said that supply from the coal mine operational again in Dec 2022 had proven to be a cost-effective alternative to sourcing coal from Coal India Limited. He added that the Pachhwara coal mine had been inoperative since 2015. “Coal from Pachhwara is Rs 11 crore cheaper per 1 lakh metric tonne compared to obtaining coal from Coal India Limited. Till now, PSPCL has procured 92 lakh metric tonne of coal from Pachhwara, transported through a total of 2,400 rakes,” he said. “As a result of this initiative, the thermal plants in Punjab are no longer facing any coal shortages. The Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Power Plant in Ropar has a coal stock sufficient for 35 days, Sri Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant in Lehra Mohabbat has a 26-day stock, and the Sri Guru Amardas Thermal Power Plant in Goindwal Sahib has a 28-day stock,” he said. He also highlighted the acquisition of the 540 MW GVK Thermal Plant, now known as the Sri Guru Amardas Thermal Plant in Goindwal Sahib. “Purchased at a rate of Rs 2 crore per MW, this plant alone is generating annual savings of Rs 350 crore. Trump won in 2016 despite many polls saying he would lose to Secretary Hillary Clinton, and came close to President Joe Biden when some analysts said it would be more of a blowout for Biden. In 2024, the polls were within a margin of error of the final election results. "For pollsters hoping to accurately forecast an election with Donald Trump at the top of the ticket, the third time may have been the charm — but it was still somewhat unsatisfactory," Politico reported. "Pollsters argue that they finally cracked the challenge of pinning down Trump voters, an elusive segment of the polling population that has caused polls to veer off the mark in previous election cycles when Trump was on the ticket." BJP leader B. Sriramulu, who launched a hunger strike outside the district hospital in Ballari over the maternal deaths reported there and at Ballari Medical College and Research Centre, called off his agitation after Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao persuaded him with concrete assurances on Saturday. In the evening, Mr. Rao visited the spot and briefed him about his government’s measures to handle the issue. “Just as we received the information about the deaths of lactating mothers in Ballari Hospital, we ordered a probe by a team of experts from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. The team expressed its apprehensions about the quality of the IV fluid [Compound Sodium Lactate Injection I.P intravenous fluid]. We immediately stopped the use of the IV fluid in question. We have decided to send another team of experts to conduct another round of thorough investigation into the deaths,” Mr. Rao told Mr. Sriramulu and appealed to the latter to end the agitation. When the Health Minister said that he was ready to tender his resignation if that would solve the problem, Mr. Sriramulu said he sought a permanent solution to the problem, not the resignation of the Health Minister. Substandard IV fluid “The Health Minister need not resign. What is required is that maternal deaths should stop and the health system should be strengthened. Hundreds of lactating mothers have died in a year. The deaths are the direct result of the use of substandard IV fluid manufactured and supplied by West Bengal-based Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals. It is not due to the negligence of doctors but that of the government, People are scared of visiting government hospitals. The government should sternly act upon and pay a compensation of ₹25 lakh to the families of each lactating mother who died recently,” Mr. Sriramulu demanded. Mr. Rao pointed out how the drug company got a stay order against the ban on its IV fluid in the State and how the Central Laboratory certified the quality of its product. “When the reports of the State laboratories underlined the substandard quality of the IV fluid supplied by the company, we stopped its usage. However, they moved to court and got a stay order. The Central laboratory upheld the quality of the drug. We will not cover up these cases of maternal deaths. As many as 327 lactating mothers have died in the state in one year. We will investigate each case and take stringent legal action against the people responsible,” the Health Minister said. Impacted by an increase in soap prices and unseasonal rainfall slowing down sales of the home insecticides (HI) segment, Godrej Consumer Products expects a "flattish" underlying volume growth and a mid-single-digit sales growth in the domestic market in the December quarter. Both segments jointly contribute to two-thirds of GCPL's standalone revenue — mainly income from operations from the domestic market. However, the rest of the portfolio is demonstrating good performance and is expected to deliver double-digit underlying volume growth, Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL) said in an update on business conditions and quarterly performance to the exchanges. "The demand conditions in India have been subdued for the past few months which is evident in the FMCG market growth," it said. A surge in palm oil and derivatives prices to the extent of a year-on-year increase of 20-30 per cent has impacted the soaps category, representing one-third of GCPL's standalone business revenue. "To partly offset the cost increases we have taken price increases, reduced grammage of key packs and reduced various trade schemes," said the Godrej Industries Group FMCG arm. Such pricing actions typically have minimal impact on category consumption but do result in reduced inventory across wholesale and household pantries, it said. It anticipates normalisation happening on the volume growth side following price stabilisation after the next few months only as per the historical patterns. Moreover, delayed winters in the north and cyclones in south India have slowed down sales in the HI segment, which also contributes one-third to GCPL's standalone business. "This has impacted HI category growths in the current quarter," it said. Under the HI category, GCPL operates in the home hygiene segment with mosquito repellent brands such as Good Knight and HIT. "However, given the significant contribution of soaps and HI to the overall business mix, the standalone business is expected to report around flattish underlying volume growth and around mid-single digit sales growth in this quarter," it said. According to GCPL, these are "exceptional situations in standalone business" that the management believes are transitionary and not structural. "Hence the management remains focused on navigating these near-term challenges while maintaining strategic investments for long-term growth as these negative trends are likely to persist for a few months," it added. GCPL's international businesses continue to do well on their relevant strategic objectives, it added. Indonesia, which is the second largest market for GCPL after India, it expects to deliver a "continued superior performance with mid-single digit volume growth and high single-digit sales growth". While its GAUM (Godrej Africa, USA, and Middle East) organic business is expected to see volume decline due to a reduction in trade stocks and portfolio simplification, as per its earlier guidance. "The effects of these actions would be largely completed in Q3 FY25. However, we continue to do well on our profitability journey, and this is likely to be the fourth consecutive quarter of healthy EBITDA margins for GAUM," it said. Through these updates, GCPL provided an overall summary of the demand conditions & trends and operating performance during the ongoing quarter. "This will be followed by a detailed performance update, post the approval of the Q3 FY25 financial results by the Board of Directors," it added. In FY24, GCPL had a consolidated revenue of ₹14,096 crore in which 59% was from the Indian market and the rest 41%was generated from international operations.
