Polls close in Uruguay’s election, with ruling coalition and opposition headed for photo finishJohn Parker Romo made a 29-yard field goal to lift the Minnesota Vikings to a 30-27 overtime win against the host Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon. Romo buried the game-winning kick in his third career game for Minnesota (9-2), which won its fourth game in a row. The score capped a 10-play, 68-yard drive for the Vikings after the Bears went three-and-out on the first overtime possession. Sam Darnold completed 22 of 34 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Vikings. Wideout Jordan Addison finished with eight catches for a career-high 162 yards and a touchdown. The overtime defeat spoiled an impressive performance from rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, who completed 32 of 47 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns for Chicago (4-7). D.J. Moore had seven catches for 106 yards and a touchdown, and Keenan Allen finished with nine catches for 86 yards and a score. Chicago erased an 11-point deficit in the final 22 seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime. Romo had put Minnesota on top 27-16 when he made a 26-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. Williams trimmed the Bears' deficit to 27-24 with 22 seconds to go. He rolled right and found Allen wide open in the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown, and moments later he fired a strike to Moore for a two-point conversion. The Bears recovered an onside kick on the next play to regain possession at their 43-yard line with 21 seconds left. Cairo Santos' onside kick bounced off the foot of Vikings tight end Johnny Mundt, and Tarvarius Moore recovered it. D.J. Moore put the Bears in field-goal position with a 27-yard reception across the middle of the field, and Santos made a 48-yarder as time expired to even the score at 27-all. Minnesota led 24-10 after three quarters. Romo made a 40-yard field goal early in the third quarter, and Aaron Jones punched in a 2-yard run with 1:22 left in the period to put the Vikings on top by two touchdowns. Addison and Jalen Nailor each had receiving touchdowns in the first half for Minnesota. Roschon Johnson scored on a 1-yard run for the Bears' only touchdown of the first half. Chicago trailed 14-10 at the break. --Field Level Media

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Taylor Swift once raved about the sweet potato casserole served at a New York City restaurant and now that recipe pops up every now and again at Thanksgiving. The holidays encourage many of us to try new recipes. Social media right now is flooded with recipes for appetizers, side dishes and desserts. Anyone making that cornbread casserole from TikTok? While we might not get to share a Thanksgiving feast with Swift — is your name Blake Lively? — or other celebrities beloved by Kansas City, we can eat like them. So here’s the recipe for that casserole Swift loved so much, and favorite family side dish recipes from Donna Kelce and Eric Stonestreet. Enjoy. Travis Kelce's mother, Donna Kelce, seen here last year at her son's music festival, dined on a cheesesteak made by actor Bradley Cooper at QVC festivities in Las Vegas this week. (Emily Curiel/Kansas City Star/TNS) Donna Kelce’s dinner rolls If we tried to guess how many holiday dinner rolls Travis Kelce and his brother, Jason Kelce, have scarfed over the years, would it be in the hundreds? Thousands? Their mom has spoken often about the batches of holiday crescent rolls she has baked over the years. Based on the recipe that won the 1969 Pillsbury Bake-Off, Pillsbury’s Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs , they’re now known as Mama Kelce’s Dinner Rolls. They blend the crescent roll pastry with marshmallows, cinnamon and sugar. Dinner roll or dessert? We bet they didn’t last long enough in front of Travis and Jason for that debate. Ingredients Rolls •1/4 cup granulated sugar •2 tablespoons Pillsbury Best all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •2 (8-ounce) cans refrigerated Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls (8 Count) •16 large marshmallows •1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted Glaze •1/2 cup powdered sugar •1/2 teaspoon vanilla •2-3 teaspoons milk •1/4 cup chopped nuts Directions Make the rolls 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray 16 medium muffin cups with nonstick baking spray. 2. In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon. 3. Separate the dough into 16 triangles. For each roll, dip 1 marshmallow into melted butter; roll in the sugar mixture. Place marshmallow on the shortest side of a triangle. Roll up, starting at shortest side and rolling to opposite point. Completely cover the marshmallow with the dough; firmly pinch edges to seal. Dip 1 end in remaining butter; place butter side down in muffin cup. 4. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. 5. When done, remove from the oven and let the puffs cool in the pan for 1 minute. Remove rolls from muffin cups; place on cooling racks set over waxed paper. Make the glaze and assemble In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar, vanilla and enough milk for desired drizzling consistency. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls. Sprinkle with nuts. Serve warm. Eric Stonestreet’s Roasted Brussels Sprouts Thanksgiving is one of the “Modern Family” star’s favorite holidays. Three years ago, as part of a campaign honoring hometown heroes , he shared one of his favorite recipe with McCormick Spices: Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Butternut Squash . This recipe serves eight. Ingredients •1 pound Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved •1 pound butternut squash, peeled and cut into bite-size cubes •1 tablespoon olive oil •1/2 teaspoon garlic powder •1/2 teaspoon thyme leaves •1/2 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper •5 slices bacon, chopped •1 shallot, finely chopped •1/2 cup dried cranberries •1/4 cup balsamic vinegar •1 teaspoon whole grain mustard •1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted (optional) •1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese, (optional) Directions 1. Preheat oven to 475°F. Spray large shallow baking pan with no stick cooking spray; set aside. Place Brussels sprouts and squash in large bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder, thyme, salt and pepper; toss to coat evenly. Spread in single layer on prepared pan. 2. Roast 16 to 18 minutes or until tender and lightly browned, stirring halfway through cooking. 3. Meanwhile, cook bacon in medium skillet on medium heat about 6 minutes or until crispy. Remove using slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain. Add shallot to same skillet; cook and stir 2 minutes until softened and lightly browned. Stir in cranberries, vinegar and mustard until well blended. Transfer mixture to small bowl; set aside. 4. Arrange roasted Brussels sprouts and squash on serving platter. Drizzle with cranberry balsamic glaze and toss gently to coat. Sprinkle with cooked bacon, toasted pecans, and crumbled blue cheese, if desired. Serve immediately. Donna Kelce, left, mother of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce watched the game with pop superstar Taylor Swift, center, during the first-half on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. (Tammy Ljungblad/Kansas City Star/TNS) Taylor Swift’s favorite sweet potato casserole Swift gushed about the sweet potato casserole served at Del Frisco’s Grille in New York City, a dish crowned with a crunchy candied pecan and oatmeal crumble. “I’ve never enjoyed anything with the word casserole in it ever before, but it’s basically sweet potatoes with this brown sugary crust,” she told InStyle. ”Oh my God, it’s amazing.” The media rushed to find the recipe, which Parade has published this Thanksgiving season . “Similar to T. Swift herself, we think this recipe is a mastermind, especially if you’ve been asked to bring the sweet potato side dish to this year’s Thanksgiving feast. It seriously begs the question: who needs pumpkin pie?” the magazine writes. Ingredients •4 lbs sweet potatoes •1⁄3 cup oats •12 oz unsalted butter, divided •1⁄2 cup packed brown sugar •1⁄2 cup toasted pecans •1⁄2 cup granulated sugar •1 tsp kosher salt •2 tsp vanilla extract •4 large eggs, beaten Directions Preheat oven to 375°F. 1. Scrub sweet potatoes. Pierce each several times with a fork and wrap tightly in foil. Place on a sheet pan. Bake 90 minutes or until tender. Set aside until cool enough to handle. 2. Meanwhile, place oats in a food processor; process 1 minute. Add 4 oz butter, brown sugar and pecans; pulse five times to combine. Spread mixture on a baking sheet; bake 10 minutes. Remove from oven, crumble. Bake 5 minutes or until golden brown. 3. Melt remaining 8 oz butter. Remove skin from cooled sweet potatoes. In a large bowl, whisk sweet potatoes, melted butter, granulated sugar and remaining ingredients until slightly lumpy. Transfer to a greased baking dish, smoothing surface evenly. Top with oat mixture. Bake 12 minutes or until heated through. Make-ahead tips •Sweet potato filling can be made up to 2 days in advance. Prepare the sweet potato filling, cool, place in a casserole dish and keep refrigerated. •Oat-pecan crust can also be made up to 2 days ahead. Make the crust according to recipe directions, cool and store in an airtight container at room temperature. Sprinkle over the sweet potato filling just before baking. It looked like a recipe for disaster. So, when his country's swimmers were being accused of doping earlier this year, one Chinese official cooked up something fast. He blamed it on contaminated noodles. In fact, he argued, it could have been a culinary conspiracy concocted by criminals, whose actions led to the cooking wine used to prepare the noodles being laced with a banned heart drug that found its way into an athlete's system. This theory was spelled out to international anti-doping officials during a meeting and, after weeks of wrangling, finally made it into the thousands of pages of data handed over to the lawyer who investigated the case involving 23 Chinese swimmers who had tested positive for that same drug. The attorney, appointed by the World Anti-Doping Agency, refused to consider that scenario as he sifted through the evidence. In spelling out his reasoning, lawyer Eric Cottier paid heed to the half-baked nature of the theory. "The Investigator considers this scenario, which he has described in the conditional tense, to be possible, no less, no more," Cottier wrote. Even without the contaminated-noodles theory, Cottier found problems with the way WADA and the Chinese handled the case but ultimately determined WADA had acted reasonably in not appealing China's conclusion that its athletes had been inadvertently contaminated. Critics of the way the China case was handled can't help but wonder if a wider exploration of the noodle theory, details of which were discovered by The Associated Press via notes and emails from after the meeting where it was delivered, might have lent a different flavor to Cottier's conclusions. "There are more story twists to the ways the Chinese explain the TMZ case than a James Bond movie," said Rob Koehler, the director general of the advocacy group Global Athlete. "And all of it is complete fiction." In April, reporting from the New York Times and the German broadcaster ARD revealed that the 23 Chinese swimmers had tested positive for the banned heart medication trimetazidine, also known as TMZ. China's anti-doping agency determined the athletes had been contaminated, and so, did not sanction them. WADA accepted that explanation, did not press the case further, and China was never made to deliver a public notice about the "no-fault findings," as is often seen in similar cases. The stock explanation for the contamination was that traces of TMZ were found in the kitchen of a hotel where the swimmers were staying. In his 58-page report, Cottier relayed some suspicions about the feasibility of that chain of events — noting that WADA's chief scientist "saw no other solution than to accept it, even if he continued to have doubts about the reality of contamination as described by the Chinese authorities." But without evidence to support pursuing the case, and with the chance of winning an appeal at almost nil, Cottier determined WADA's "decision not to appeal appears indisputably reasonable." A mystery remained: How did those traces of TMZ get into the kitchen? Shortly after the doping positives were revealed, the Institute of National Anti-Doping Organizations held a meeting on April 30 where it heard from the leader of China's agency, Li Zhiquan. Li's presentation was mostly filled with the same talking points that have been delivered throughout the saga — that the positive tests resulted from contamination from the kitchen. But he expanded on one way the kitchen might have become contaminated, harkening to another case in China involving a low-level TMZ positive. A pharmaceutical factory, he explained, had used industrial alcohol in the distillation process for producing TMZ. The industrial alcohol laced with the drug "then entered the market through illegal channels," he said. The alcohol "was re-used by the perpetrators to process and produce cooking wine, which is an important seasoning used locally to make beef noodles," Li said. "The contaminated beef noodles were consumed by that athlete, resulting in an extremely low concentration of TMZ in the positive sample. "The wrongdoers involved have been brought to justice." This new information raised eyebrows among the anti-doping leaders listening to Li's report. So much so that over the next month, several emails ensued to make sure the details about the noodles and wine made their way to WADA lawyers, who could then pass it onto Cottier. Eventually, Li did pass on the information to WADA general counsel Ross Wenzel and, just to be sure, one of the anti-doping leaders forwarded it, as well, according to the emails seen by the AP. All this came with Li's request that the noodles story be kept confidential. Turns out, it made it into Cottier's report, though he took the information with a grain of salt. "Indeed, giving it more attention would have required it to be documented, then scientifically verified and validated," he wrote. Neither Wenzel nor officials at the Chinese anti-doping agency returned messages from AP asking about the noodles conspiracy and the other athlete who Li suggested had been contaminated by them. Meanwhile, 11 of the swimmers who originally tested positive competed at the Paris Games earlier this year in a meet held under the cloud of the Chinese doping case. Though WADA considers the case closed, Koehler and others point to situations like this as one of many reasons that an investigation by someone other than Cottier, who was hired by WADA, is still needed. "It gives the appearance that people are just making things up as they go along on this, and hoping the story just goes away," Koehler said. "Which clearly it has not." But like other Trump plans, the idea is likely to run into regulatory and legislative hurdles, including a landmark law that requires federal agencies to consider the environmental impact before deciding on major projects. In a post on his Truth Social site Tuesday, Trump said anyone making a $1 billion investment in the United States “will receive fully expedited approvals and permits, including, but in no way limited to, all Environmental approvals.” “GET READY TO ROCK!!!" he added. While Trump did not specify who would be eligible for accelerated approvals, dozens of energy projects proposed nationwide, from natural gas pipelines and export terminals to solar farms and offshore wind turbines, meet the billion-dollar criteria. Environmental groups slammed the proposal, calling it illegal on its face and a clear violation of the National Environmental Policy Act, a 54-year-old law that requires federal agencies to study the potential environmental impact of proposed actions and consider alternatives. “Trump is unabashedly and literally offering to sell out America to the highest corporate bidder,'' said Lena Moffitt, executive director of Evergreen Action, an environmental group. She said the plan was “obviously illegal” and another example of Trump “putting special interests and corporate polluters in the driver’s seat, which would result in more pollution, higher costs and fewer energy choices for the American people.” Alexandra Adams, chief policy advocacy officer at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said Trump should be careful what he wishes for. “What if someone wants to build a waste incinerator next to Mar-a-Lago or a coal mine next to Bedminster golf course?" she asked, referring to Trump's Florida home and New Jersey golf club, respectively. “There’s a reason Congress requires the government to take a hard look at community impacts to make sure we don’t greenlight projects that do more harm than good. Cheerleading on social media doesn’t change that reality,” Adams said. Energy analyst Kevin Book said Trump's post showed his usual flair for showmanship but said there was a real concern underlying it: a bipartisan push for permitting reform to speed up major environmental projects that now take years to win approval. READ: “The substance here is he is really serious about trying to get permitting reform done," said Book, managing partner at ClearView Energy Partners, a Washington research firm. “Permitting delays are an impediment in many sectors — including energy — and there are multiple billion-dollar investments waiting for permitting reform," Book said. A bipartisan plan championed by Senate Energy Committee Chairman Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, the committee's top Republican, would speed up permitting for major energy and mineral projects, but its chances are uncertain in the final few weeks of the current Congress. Their plan would boost energy projects of all types, bringing down prices, creating domestic jobs and allowing the U.S. to continue as a global energy leader, Barrasso and Manchin say. Critics say the bill would open major expanses of public lands and waters for oil and gas drilling and gut executive and judicial review. “Checking off wish lists for oil, gas and mining companies is not permitting reform,” said Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona, the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee. He called the bill “a dirty deal” that would exempt some oil and gas drilling projects from federal review and “let mining companies dump even more toxic waste on our public lands.” Jason Miller, a senior adviser to Trump, said Trump's second term will be a “golden age of regulation-cutting,'' including a promise to “drill, baby, drill.'' “If you want to bring in money, he’s going to move heaven and earth to get that money in the door and get it invested in the United States,'' Miller said Tuesday at a conference organized by the Wall Street Journal. The plan applies to both domestic and foreign investment, Miller said: “He wants to get the money and he wants to get the regulations cut and get the economy moving again. ” In the short term, Trump's post makes permitting reform less likely this year, Book said, as Republicans seek to wait until next year when they will control both chambers of Congress and the White House. But the issue is likely to return quickly in the new year. ___ Associated Press writer Jill Colvin contributed to this story. Copyright 2024 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. DataBank Ranks Among Fastest-Growing Companies in North America on the 2024 Deloitte Technology Fast 500TMIt is an ambitious social experiment of our moment in history — one that experts say could accomplish something that parents, schools and other governments have attempted with varying degrees of success: keeping kids off social media until they turn 16 . Australia's new law, approved by its Parliament last week, is an attempt to swim against many tides of modern life — formidable forces like technology, marketing, globalization and, of course, the iron will of a teenager. And like efforts of the past to protect kids from things that parents believe they're not ready for, the nation's move is both ambitious and not exactly simple, particularly in a world where young people are often shaped, defined and judged by the online company they keep. The ban won't go into effect for another year. But how will Australia be able to enforce it? That's not clear, nor will it be easy. TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram have become so ingrained in young people's lives that going cold turkey will be difficult. Other questions loom. Does the ban limit kids' free expression and — especially for those in vulnerable groups — isolate them and curtail their opportunity to connect with members of their community? And how will social sites verify people's ages, anyway? Can't kids just get around such technicalities, as they so often do? This is, after all, the 21st century — an era when social media is the primary communications tool for most of those born in the past 25 years who, in a fragmented world, seek the common cultures of trends, music and memes. What happens when big swaths of that fall away? Is Australia's initiative a good, long-time-coming development that will protect the vulnerable, or could it become a well-meaning experiment with unintended consequences? The law will make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) for systemic failures to prevent children younger than 16 from holding accounts. “It’s clear that social media companies have to be held accountable, which is what Australia is trying to do,” said Jim Steyer, president and CEO of the nonprofit Common Sense Media. Leaders and parents in countries around the world are watching Australia’s policy closely as many seek to protect young kids from the internet's dangerous corners — and, not incidentally, from each other. Most nations have taken different routes, from parental consent requirements to minimum age limits. Many child safety experts, parents and even teens who have waited to get on social media consider Australia's move a positive step. They say there’s ample reason to ensure that children wait. “What’s most important for kids, just like adults, is real human connection. Less time alone on the screen means more time to connect, not less," said Julie Scelfo, the founder of Mothers Against Media Addiction, or MAMA, a grassroots group of parents aimed at combatting the harms of social media to children. “I’m confident we can support our kids in interacting in any number of ways aside from sharing the latest meme.” The harms to children from social media have been well documented in the two decades since Facebook’s launch ushered in a new era in how the world communicates. Kids who spend more time on social media, especially as tweens or young teenagers, are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, according to multiple studies — though it is not yet clear if there is a causal relationship. What's more, many are exposed to content that is not appropriate for their age, including pornography and violence, as well as social pressures about body image and makeup . They also face bullying, sexual harassment and unwanted advances from their peers as well as adult strangers. Because their brains are not fully developed, teenagers, especially younger ones the law is focused on, are also more affected by social comparisons than adults, so even happy posts from friends can send them into a negative spiral. Many major initiatives, particularly those aimed at social engineering, can produce side effects — often unintended. Could that happen here? What, if anything, do kids stand to lose by separating kids and the networks in which they participate? Paul Taske, associate director of litigation at the tech lobbying group NetChoice, says he considers the ban “one of the most extreme violations of free speech on the world stage today" even as he expressed relief that the First Amendment prevents such law in the United States "These restrictions would create a massive cultural shift,” Taske said. “Not only is the Australian government preventing young people from engaging with issues they’re passionate about, but they’re also doing so even if their parents are ok with them using digital services," he said. "Parents know their children and their needs the best, and they should be making these decisions for their families — not big government. That kind of forcible control over families inevitably will have downstream cultural impacts.” David Inserra, a fellow for Free Expression and Technology, Cato Institute, called the bill “about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike” in a recent blog post . While Australia's law doesn't require “hard verification” such as an uploaded ID, he said, it calls for effective “age assurance.” He said no verification system can ensure accuracy while also protecting privacy and not impacting adults in the process. Privacy advocates have also raised concerns about the law's effect on online anonymity, a cornerstone of online communications — and something that can protect teens on social platforms. “Whether it be religious minorities and dissidents, LGBTQ youth, those in abusive situations, whistleblowers, or countless other speakers in tricky situations, anonymous speech is a critical tool to safely challenge authority and express controversial opinions,” Inserra said. A spot check of kids at one mall in the Australian city of Brisbane on Wednesday didn't turn up a great deal of worry, though. “Social media is still important because you get to talk to people, but I think it’s still good that they’re like limiting it,” said Swan Son, a 13-year-old student at Brisbane State High School. She said she has had limited exposure to social media and wouldn’t really miss it for a couple of years. Her parents already enforce a daily one-hour limit. And as for her friends? “I see them at school every day, so I think I’ll be fine.” Conor Negric, 16, said he felt he’d dodged a bullet because of his age. Still, he considers the law reasonable. “I think 16 is fine. Some kids, I know some kids like 10 who’re on Instagram, Snapchat. I only got Instagram when I was 14." His mom, Sive Negric, who has two teenage sons, said she was happy for her boys to avoid exposure to social media too early: “That aspect of the internet, it’s a bit `meanland.'" Parents in Britain and across Europe earlier this year organized on platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram to promise not to buy smartphones for children younger than 12 or 13. This approach costs almost no money and requires no government enforcement. In the United States, some parents are keeping kids off social media either informally or as part of an organized campaign such as Wait Until 8th, a group that helps parents delay kids' access to social media and phones. This fall, Norway announced plans to ban kids under 15 from using social media, while France is testing a smartphone ban for kids under 15 in a limited number of schools — a policy that could be rolled out nationwide if successful. U.S. lawmakers have held multiple congressional hearings — most recently in January — on child online safety. Still, the last federal law aimed at protecting children online was enacted in 1998, six years before Facebook’s founding. In July, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed legislation designed to protect children from dangerous online content , pushing forward with what would be the first major effort by Congress in decades to hold tech companies more accountable. But the Kids Online Safety Act has since stalled in the House. While several states have passed laws requiring age verification, those are stuck in court. Utah became the first state to pass laws regulating children’s social media use in 2023. In September, a judge issued the preliminary injunction against the law, which would have required social media companies to verify the ages of users, apply privacy settings and limit some features. NetChoice has also obtained injunctions temporarily halting similar laws in several other states. And last May, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said there is insufficient evidence to show social media is safe for kids. He urged policymakers to treat social media like car seats, baby formula, medication and other products children use. “Why should social media products be any different? Scelfo said. “Parents cannot possibly bear the entire responsibility of keeping children safe online, because the problems are baked into the design of the products.” Associated Press Writers John Pye in Brisbane, Australia and Laurie Kellman in London contributed to this story.

The stock market is buzzing with activity as major futures like the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq experience minor gains after hours. The spotlight is on the upcoming CPI inflation report set to be released early Wednesday, which promises to influence market dynamics significantly. Market Pulse : On Tuesday, the stock market saw minor declines, though it remains near historic peaks. Notable movements included Google-parent Alphabet (GOOGL) breaking through resistance levels, while Tesla (TSLA) sustained its upward trajectory, bolstered by positive market sentiment for its autonomous vehicles and supportive policies. However, the tech sector showed signs of fragility. Leading names like Nvidia (NVDA), Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), and Broadcom (AVGO) faced pivotal moments, with stocks falling past key support levels. In contrast, GE Vernova (GEV) stirred interest by maintaining its full-year guidance, despite lowering its 2025 revenue expectations. Investment Shifts : Alphabet saw a strong uptick, driven by its advancements in quantum computing, lifting its stocks significantly. Tesla’s shares climbed, fueled by optimism surrounding its EV registrations, particularly in China, overpowering slower growth in the U.S. and Europe. While some stocks soared, others faced setbacks. Palantir (PLTR), despite being 2024’s top S&P 500 performer, continued its downward correction. AppLovin (APP) also struggled, seeing a notable dip after missing the S&P 500 index inclusion. The unfolding market scenario suggests a complex landscape where selective growth stocks like Google and Tesla shine amidst broader sector struggles. Investors are advised to navigate cautiously, keeping an eye on emerging stock opportunities and potential shifts following the upcoming inflation figures. Market Dynamics: Emerging Trends and Future Predictions to Watch The stock market is undergoing subtle yet significant shifts as we move into the next phase of economic data analysis and investor sentiment. While familiar names like the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq show minor after-hours gains, the focus remains on the forthcoming CPI inflation report, which is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping future market trajectories. How the CPI Report Could Impact Your Investments With inflation data remaining a hot topic, investors eagerly anticipate the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. This key economic indicator is set to influence interest rates and potentially sway the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decisions. As markets hover near historic highs, understanding the implications of the CPI report is crucial for strategic portfolio adjustments. Insights into Tech Sector Volatility The tech sector’s complexity persists, with major players facing volatility. Alphabet (GOOGL) broke through resistance levels, largely driven by breakthroughs in quantum computing technology. This positions the company for long-term competitiveness. Meanwhile, stocks such as Nvidia (NVDA), Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), and Broadcom (AVGO) fell past key support levels, highlighting potential vulnerabilities amidst their robust growth narratives. The Rise of Quantum Computing and AI Alphabet’s investment in quantum computing marks a significant trend as tech companies race to harness revolutionary technologies. Quantum computing holds the potential to disrupt various industries by handling complex computations far beyond the capability of traditional systems. As these advancements unfold, their impact on global industries and stock valuations will require careful observation. Tesla’s Strategic Advances Tesla (TSLA) continues its upward momentum, supported by increasing EV registrations in China despite facing slower growth in Western markets. Policies supportive of autonomous vehicle development contribute to investor optimism. Tesla’s strategic focus on expanding its footprint in emerging markets could fortify its market position and drive future growth. Key Challenges and Opportunities Palantir (PLTR), despite being a top performer, is experiencing a correction, suggesting a revaluation phase that investors should be cautious about. Similarly, AppLovin (APP) struggles after missing S&P 500 index inclusion targets, underlining the importance of index alignments in investor strategies. Predictions and Future Market Trends Investors are encouraged to stay informed about upcoming market developments, including inflation trends and the potential uptick in interest rates. Monitoring advancements in quantum computing and AI could present lucrative opportunities for forward-thinking investors. With selective growth stocks like Alphabet and Tesla in focus, a cautious yet opportunistic approach could yield significant rewards. The Apprentice star also argued that a lack of clarity from the Government on the ownership test is causing “significant uncertainty” for potential investors. This came as the House of Lords continued its scrutiny of the Football Governance Bill, which seeks to establish an independent regulator for the top five tiers of the men’s game. In the upper chamber, Baroness Brady said: “We are creating legislation which will profoundly affect 160 quite unique institutions, from Premier League clubs through to the National League community clubs, but it is important for everyone to understand that the consultation with these affected businesses by the current Government has been remarkably limited, almost unbelievably so. “Just seven Premier League clubs, I was one of them, was granted a brief half-hour meeting with the Secretary of State over the summer. “And following this cursory engagement, significant decisions were made that could fundamentally affect the future of English football, most notably with the inclusion of parachute payments within the backstop mechanism. “This is particularly concerning given that fundamental issues still remained unresolved, we still lack any clarity on Uefa’s position on state interference, for example, this clearly creates profound uncertainty for clubs competing in or aspiring to European competition, as well as our national teams.” “We don’t know what the ownership test will look like, this causes significant uncertainty for potential investors as to whether they are able to own a club,” she added. Lady Brady continued: “I have spoken to many of my colleagues across all of the football pyramid, we are all alarmed about and puzzled by the lack of discussion on the Bill with ministers. “Would the minister agree that we all want to get the detail of this Bill right? And can she see any downsides to providing meaningful opportunities to hear from all clubs across the football pyramid affected by the legislation?” Prior to this, Tory shadow sports minister Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay had tabled an amendment which he said would allow clubs to “make their views known on this legislation” by including specific competitions on the face of the Bill. Labour frontbencher Baroness Twycross told the upper chamber: “I don’t think the leagues are confused either on which leagues this legislation will apply to.” She added: “This power is both reasonable and the result of evidence-based consultation with all key stakeholders in the industry. “This power ensures that the competitions in scope can be amended in a timely manner and ensures the scope of the regime remains relevant.” The peer later said: “Over the past three years there have been countless opportunities for all affected and interested parties to make representations.” Lady Brady also raised concerns about the financial distribution backstop, which she said is “clearly designed as a mechanism to gain direct access to, and apportionate Premier League revenue, and no-one else’s”. “I might add the backstop will allow the IFR (Independent Football Regulator) to do this even if it was against the Premier League clubs’ will, or even without the clubs’ agreement, even if it was to have a detrimental effect on the clubs and the overall competition it removes revenue from,” she added. The backstop would allow the new IFR to intervene in the distribution of Premier League broadcast revenue down the leagues as a last resort. It could be triggered by the Premier League, English Football League (EFL) or National League to mediate the fair financial distribution of this revenue if they are not able to come to an agreement. Conservative peers later raised concerns over the cost implications to clubs of establishing the regulator, although they faced claims of “filibustering” – wasting time by making overlong speeches in a bid to delay progress. Watching opposition benches blatantly filibustering to destroy the Football Governance Bill is nothing short of sporting vandalism.Football is broken. Clubs are struggling. Now those seats have been lost, do they no longer care about likes of Reading or Southend? — Niall Couper (@NiallCouper) Labour peer Lord Watson of Invergowrie questioned why Lord Parkinson was showing “confected outrage” at the Bill when the former culture minister would have been defending a similar proposal had the Tories remained in power. Lord Parkinson, in his reply, said: “We want to see this regulator established, we want to see it doing its work and doing so effectively, but we also see before us a Bill that is different because of the election that was called and the result that happened, and we’re interrogating particularly closely the changes that the Government have made to the Bill – of which there are many. “And we have more concerns on these benches than we did before the election from my colleagues behind me about the way we do it.” The Tory peer pointed to Labour frontbenchers fulfilling their duties to “properly scrutinise” then-government legislation when they were on the opposition benches. Lady Twycross, in an intervention, said: “While I agree that (Lord Parkinson) is correct that I would scrutinise legislation when I was sitting on those (opposition) benches, I have never sought to filibuster a Bill to which my party had committed, which my party had laid before Parliament, and intended to filibuster it to the point of getting us stuck in treacle.” Lord Parkinson replied: “That is not what we’re doing.” Niall Couper, chief executive of the campaign group Fair Game, wrote on social media site X: “Watching opposition benches blatantly filibustering to destroy the Football Governance Bill is nothing short of sporting vandalism.”

It is an ambitious social experiment of our moment in history — one that experts say could accomplish something that parents, schools and other governments have attempted with varying degrees of success: keeping kids off social media until they turn 16 . Story continues below video “Not only is the Australian government preventing young people from engaging with issues they’re passionate about, but they’re also doing so even if their parents are ok with them using digital services," he said. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to lead the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), withdrew his name from consideration on Tuesday. In a post on X, Chronister described the nomination as "the honor of a lifetime." "Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration. There is more work to be done for the citizens of Hillsborough County and a lot of initiatives I am committed to fulfilling," Chronister continued. "I sincerely appreciate the nomination, outpouring of support by the American people, and look forward to continuing my service as Sheriff of Hillsborough County." Following Chronister’s withdrawal, rumors began circulating on social media that his nomination was suggested by Pam Bondi, Trump’s pick for attorney general. "I have a feeling Pam Bondi was part of this recommendation to Trump. She should be pulled as well if that is true," one person claimed on X. Another wrote, "Potential that Pam Bondi recommended him. If true, not a good look for her." A third person commented, "Pam Bondi needs to have her nomination withdrawn over that recommendation." As of now, these rumors remain unconfirmed. Pam Bondi replaced Matt Gaetz as Trump's attorney general nominee after Gaetz withdrew his candidacy. A former Florida attorney general, Bondi is the first woman to hold that role in the state. Announcing her nomination, Trump said, "For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans - Not anymore. "Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years - She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!" (Photo by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Program via FLICKR | Creative Commons license) The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s former longtime grizzly bear recovery manager has written a new report that recommends against grizzly bear delisting and details how he believes the federal recovery plan he wrote in 1993 should be updated to treat grizzlies in the Northern Rockies as a single population and to include new research detailing how to connect separate grizzly populations to ensure their long-term recovery. Based on the report , a group of 15 environmental and animal conservation groups on Wednesday sent a petition to the Fish and Wildlife Service asking it to update its Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan just weeks before the agency is set to issue decisions on whether to delist the animals from Endangered Species Act protections in two ecosystems in Montana or in all the Lower 48 states. Chris Servheen, the Missoula-based grizzly bear recovery coordinator for the Fish and Wildlife Service from 1981 to 2016, said he had been working on the new report for the past year and that its finalization simply happened to come just before the agency’s decisions are released. Servheen is currently the co-chair of the North American Bears Expert Team for the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The Fish and Wildlife Service said in court filings earlier this year it would issue decisions on whether to de-list grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem, and the Lower 48 states by the end of January and likely ahead of the change in administrations. Those decisions are being made in response to requests for delisting from the states of Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, whose leadership believe grizzly bears have recovered either in the particular ecosystems or in the U.S. as a whole and want to be able to manage the species at a state level. But Servheen and the groups that filed the petition Wednesday morning do not believe grizzlies have recovered enough to warrant delisting in response to any of the states’ petitions. They point to 90 documented grizzly bear deaths so far this year in the Northern Rockies – including 73 in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem – as showing that there is still work to do before the species’ fate goes into the hands of governors who would like to eventually open up grizzly hunting seasons. “The service has been managing bears under the same plan for the last 31 years, and yet so much has changed in the world of grizzly bear science and conservation over the last three decades, when the plan was first revised,” Earthjustice senior attorney Mary Cochenour said in a news conference detailing the petition and report. “The current practice of managing bears in isolated populations just isn’t working anymore, and recovery is more than just the number of bears.” Servheen’s report says the 1993 revision to the recovery plan that he led now fails to account for the population increases in the Northern Rockies or efforts during the past several years by states including Montana to create or enact programs focused on reducing predator populations, including for once-protected animals like wolves and grizzlies. The report proposes managing grizzly bears as a single metapopulation in the Northern Rockies rather than the current system in which there are five separate recovery zones in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and eastern Washington. While there were only an estimated 300 to 400 grizzlies when the species was listed in 1975, that has now grown to about 2,000 in the five recovery zones, Servheen said. And it recommends that federal and state governments impose stronger regulations to cut down on human-caused grizzly bear deaths and the sprawl of homes and businesses into grizzly bear territory, especially the connectivity zones where scientists hope the different ecosystem populations can at some point connect in order to bolster the overall population and diversify the species’ gene pool. “These revisions will enhance resiliency and build a strong recovery system in the 4% of their historical range where grizzlies remain within the conterminous U.S.,” the report says. “Rather than rush to delist the grizzly bear, this plan invites Tribal, State, and Federal agencies to come together to build a strong and lasting recovery framework for this vulnerable and iconic species.” Servheen’s report says that if the Fish and Wildlife Service does not adopt his proposed revisions to the recovery plan, the grizzly bear in the Northern Rockies “remains in danger and cannot be considered for delisting.” It says that since grizzlies have moved beyond the boundaries of each recovery area, treating them as a metapopulation makes more sense because grizzlies can eventually be connected between the separate areas and can be managed as a single population, and not with set population guidance for each area. “A naturally functioning metapopulation of interconnected grizzly bears in the Northern U.S. Rockies will be more demographically and genetically resilient to the ongoing impacts of climate change and increasing levels of human activity in the area,” the report says. The report and the petition also suggest that state and local governments, along with federal land agencies, need to better manage sprawl into grizzly bear territory, find ways to educate residents living in grizzly territory to keep themselves and the bears safe and out of conflict, and reduce recreation pressure on grizzly bears. That is so the bears have a greater chance to move through the connectivity areas, to keep them focused on wild food sources, and to prevent humans from artificially influencing grizzly bear habitat, several representatives of the 15 groups said in a news conference Tuesday. Servheen pointed out that the Montana Grizzly Bear Advisory Council convened by former Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock in 2020 issued recommendations that the final report said “support our vision for an interconnected metapopulation of grizzly bears in Montana.” But he said that vision has changed under Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte’s administration and with some lawmakers’ “anti-predatory attitudes.” He said regulations including allowing for hound hunting of black bears and baited wolf traps and snares were among the newly created threats to grizzly bears. Some of the same groups involved in the petition have successfully gone to court to restrict wolf trapping seasons in Montana and Idaho to when grizzlies are most likely to be inside their winter dens. “Why are the states so anti-carnivore? Well, it seems to be based on an abnormal hatred of carnivores among some people,” Servheen said. “It is not reasonable and it’s not based on facts. It’s basically the anti-predator attitudes of the 1800s in some people’s minds. These state policies toward carnivores have no place in modern-day science and fact-based wildlife management.” Kristin Combs, the executive director of Wyoming Wildlife Advocates, said Teton County, Wyoming, has been working to outfit people living and visiting there with bear-proof trash cans, assisting with paying for electric fencing, and working on other measures that allow grizzlies and humans to coexist in the area. The petition asks for an updated recovery plan that includes more funding and resources to allow people in recovery and connectivity areas to be better bear aware and tolerant of grizzlies, while helping grizzlies avoid food habituation that often leads to them being killed. “Coexistence has got to occur before we can consider grizzly bears to be safe, and we’re never going to have connectivity between those areas until we make sure that people are aware that bears could be in their area and are taking measures to do so,” Combs said. Cochenour said the group wanted to get the report and petition in front of the Fish and Wildlife Service to consider before it releases its delisting decisions. In the event that grizzlies in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem alone are delisted and the recovery plan is revised, Servheen said that would be an “incomplete approach” and that if grizzlies are delisted in the Lower 48, a grizzly recovery plan would not apply and the “game is over” for grizzlies. Cochenour said regardless of the outcome of the petition and the delisting decisions, the group would be prepared to defend grizzly bears and advocate for a broader recovery. Servheen said he hopes pressure from the states does not force a decision he believes would not be grounded in science. “These bears belong to all the people of the United States. They shouldn’t be controlled by just a few anti-predator state politicians, and their future is really in our hands,” he said. “Most people think of grizzly bears as super powerful, but really, they’re really vulnerable, and they’re vulnerable to the decisions we make.” Earthjustice Center for Biological Diversity Endangered Species Coalition Friends of the Bitterroot Friends of the Clearwater Great Bear Foundation Humane Society of the United States Humane Society Legislative Fund Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment Park County Environmental Council Sierra Club Western Watersheds Project WildEarth Guardians Wyoming Wildlife Advocates Yaak Valley Forest Council Daily Montanan is part of States Newsroom, a nonprofit news network supported by grants and a coalition of donors as a 501c(3) public charity. Insurgents' stunning march across Syria gained speed on Saturday with news that they had reached the suburbs of the capital and with the government forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by an opposition war monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. > Watch NBC Bay Area News 📺 Streaming free 24/7 The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. In their push to overthrow Assad's government, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. For the first time in the country's long-running civil war, the government now has control of only four of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Homs, Latakia and Tartus. The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country is Assad's chief international backer, said he feels “sorry for the Syrian people.” In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands went to Syria's border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those still open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a yearslong siege. The U.N. said it was moving noncritical staff outside the country as a precaution. Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine . Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad's forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media that that the United States should avoid engaging militarily in Syria. Pedersen said a date for talks in Geneva on the implementation a U.N. resolution, adopted in 2015, and calling for a Syrian-led political process, would be announced later. The resolution calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with U.N.-supervised elections. Later Saturday, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, along with Pederson, gathered on the sidelines of the Doha Summit to discuss the situation in Syria. No details were immediately available. The insurgents' march Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. HTS controls much of northwest Syria and in 2017 set up a “salvation government” to run day-to-day affairs in the region. In recent years, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has sought to remake the group’s image, cutting ties with al-Qaida, ditching hard-line officials and vowing to embrace pluralism and religious tolerance. Syria’s military, meanwhile, sent large numbers of reinforcements to defend the key central city of Homs, Syria’s third largest, as insurgents approached its outskirts. The shock offensive began Nov. 27, during which gunmen captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria’s largest, and the central city of Hama , the country’s fourth largest city. Opposition activists said Saturday that a day earlier, insurgents entered Palmyra, which is home to invaluable archaeological sites had been in government hands since being taken from the Islamic State group in 2017. To the south, Syrian troops left much of the province of Quneitra including the main Baath City, activists said. Syrian Observatory said government troops have withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces and are sending reinforcements to Homs, where a battle loomed. If the insurgents capture Homs, they would cut the link between Damascus, Assad’s seat of power, and the coastal region where the president enjoys wide support. The Syrian army said in a statement that it carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists." The army said it was setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area,” apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. Diplomacy in Doha The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkey is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticized Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country’s underlying problems. “Assad didn’t seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there is a real threat to Syria’s “territorial integrity.” He said the war could “damage and destroy what is left if there is no sense of urgency” to start a political process. ____ Karam reported from London. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The president of South Korea early Wednesday lifted the martial law he imposed on the country hours earlier, bending to political pressure after a tense night in which troops surrounded parliament and lawmakers voted to reject military rule. President Yoon Suk Yeol, who appeared likely to be impeached over his actions, imposed martial law late Tuesday out of frustration with the opposition, vowing to eliminate “anti-state” forces as he struggles against opponents who control parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea. Shane Bieber says bonds led to re-signing with Guardians after he missed 2024 following elbow surgeryWEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump's supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in his political movement into public display, previewing the fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trump's movement — wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump's Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S. Loomer declared the stance to be “not America First policy” and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves. Much of the debate played out on the social media network X, which Musk owns. Loomer's comments sparked a back-and-forth with venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks , whom Trump has tapped to be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar." Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tasked with finding ways to cut the federal government , weighed in, defending the tech industry's need to bring in foreign workers. It bloomed into a larger debate with more figures from the hard-right weighing in about the need to hire U.S. workers, whether values in American culture can produce the best engineers, free speech on the internet, the newfound influence tech figures have in Trump's world and what his political movement stands for. Trump has not yet weighed in on the rift, and his presidential transition team did not respond to a message seeking comment. Musk, the world's richest man who has grown remarkably close to the president-elect , was a central figure in the debate, not only for his stature in Trump's movement but his stance on the tech industry's hiring of foreign workers. Technology companies say H-1B visas for skilled workers, used by software engineers and others in the tech industry, are critical for hard-to-fill positions. But critics have said they undercut U.S. citizens who could take those jobs. Some on the right have called for the program to be eliminated, not expanded. Born in South Africa, Musk was once on an a H-1B visa himself and defended the industry's need to bring in foreign workers. “There is a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent," he said in a post. “It is the fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley.” Trump's own positions over the years have reflected the divide in his movement. His tough immigration policies, including his pledge for a mass deportation, were central to his winning presidential campaign. He has focused on immigrants who come into the U.S. illegally but he has also sought curbs on legal immigration , including family-based visas. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump called the H-1B visa program “very bad” and “unfair” for U.S. workers. After he became president, Trump in 2017 issued a “Buy American and Hire American” executive order , which directed Cabinet members to suggest changes to ensure H-1B visas were awarded to the highest-paid or most-skilled applicants to protect American workers. Trump's businesses, however, have hired foreign workers, including waiters and cooks at his Mar-a-Lago club , and his social media company behind his Truth Social app has used the the H-1B program for highly skilled workers. During his 2024 campaign for president, as he made immigration his signature issue, Trump said immigrants in the country illegally are “poisoning the blood of our country" and promised to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. But in a sharp departure from his usual alarmist message around immigration generally, Trump told a podcast this year that he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges. “I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country," he told the “All-In" podcast with people from the venture capital and technology world. Those comments came on the cusp of Trump's budding alliance with tech industry figures, but he did not make the idea a regular part of his campaign message or detail any plans to pursue such changes.Bullies sneak into ICU, take pics of 12-year-old girl they drove to hang herself: suit

United States President-elect Donald Trump suggested Sunday that Mexico should become a state of the U.S. due to a trade imbalance between the two countries, prompting President Claudia Sheinbaum to reiterate that Mexico is “a free, sovereign and independent country.” In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” program, Trump railed against the trade deficits the United States is recording with Mexico and Canada, which together with the U.S. are the signatories to the USMCA free trade pact. “We’re subsidizing Canada to the tune of over $100 billion a year. We’re subsidizing Mexico for almost $300 billion,” he said, significantly exaggerating the United States’ trade deficits with both countries. “We shouldn’t be — why are we subsidizing these countries? If we’re going to subsidize them, let them become a state. We’re subsidizing Mexico and we’re subsidizing Canada and we’re subsidizing many countries all over the world,” Trump said. “All I want to do is I want to have a level, fast, but fair playing field,” he added. While Mexico has a significant trade surplus with the United States, it is not as large as Trump claimed. The United States’ trade deficit with its southern neighbor was US $152.47 billion in 2023 and $141.85 billion in the first 10 months of 2024, according to the United States Census Bureau . Although Trump signed the USMCA deal, which superseded NAFTA in 2020, he evidently believes that trade between the three North American countries is not fair. In October, he pledged to renegotiate the pact . Since the trade agreement took effect, Mexico has become the world’s top exporter to the United States, ousting China from that position in 2023 . Trump has pledged to impose a 25% tariff on all Mexican and Canadian exports to the United States on the first day of his second term, although his stated motivation for doing so is not the trade imbalance but what he described as the “long simmering problem” of drugs and migrants entering the U.S. via its southern and northern borders. Trump said in a social media post on Nov. 25 that his proposed tariff on Mexican and Canadian goods would “remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” At her morning press conference on Monday , Sheinbaum was asked about the president-elect’s “let them become a state” remark in reference to Mexico and Canada. She initially expressed her desire to cease “dialogue” with Trump “through the media,” but added that “obviously Mexico is a free, sovereign and independent country.” “We all know that and we always have to defend it,” Sheinbaum said. “I understand that this subsidy he speaks about has to do with the increase in Mexico’s exports to the United States, which now exceed [Mexico’s] imports [from the U.S.],” she said. “But yesterday, at the event we were at in Nuevo Laredo, I stated that the only way to compete with other regions of the world is by maintaining and strengthening the [North American] trade agreement, the USMCA,” Sheinbaum said. “... More than looking at each other as competition, we have to look at each other as complementary. It was President Trump who signed the USMCA and the United States has had a lot of benefits from the agreement,” she said. Sheinbaum previously said that her government would implement its own reciprocal tariff on U.S. exports to Mexico if Trump goes ahead with his Nov. 25 tariff threat. However, she has expressed confidence that the proposed U.S. tariff won’t end up being imposed on Mexican exports. Meanwhile, the Mexican government has countered that a 25% tax on Mexican exports would have a negative impact on the U.S. economy and consumers . Trump’s “Meet the Press” interview was his first sit-down interview since he won the United States presidential election on Nov. 5. In a discussion with NBC journalist Kristen Welker that lasted more than an hour, the president-elect made a range of remarks that were directly or indirectly related to Mexico. Here is a selection of those comments. ( Sheinbaum previously rejected Trump’s claim that she agreed during their call to “stop migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our southern border.”) Mexico News Dailywin real money casino online 。

Gabriel is a doubt for Arsenal 's huge Premier League clash with Manchester United on Wednesday. The influential Brazil centre-back won his race to be fit for Saturday's trip to West Ham after limping out of the impressive 5-1 UEFA Champions League win over Sporting CP in midweek. Once again, Gabriel showed his prowess when attacking set-pieces by heading home an early opener from Bukayo Saka's right-wing corner. Arsenal rode a five-goal first half explosion to victory against West Ham. 💥 Watch ALL FIVE of their goals ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/bmKWXsb4Oc That set in motion a frantic first half, which ended with Arsenal 5-2 in front. Not only was the interval the end of the goalscoring, it was also the end of Gabriel's participation. Speaking after the match, Mikel Arteta confirmed a recurrence of the issue that forced the 26-year-old off in Lisbon, as opposed to any side effects from being clattered by West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski for the penalty that Saka dispatched for the Gunners' fifth goal. MORE: All the latest Arsenal news | Premier League schedule for 2024/25 | Latest Premier League top scorer rankings "It was related to the previous injury that he had in Lisbon," Arteta said. "Obviously he did great to be part of that but with the result and the niggle that he's feeling we decided to take him off." Victory moved Arsenal to within five points of Liverpool at the summit. The leaders face champions Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. All of the title favourites have already been hit by injury problems this season and Gabriel is not Arteta's only fresh concern coming out of the West Ham game. Riccardo Calafiori hobbled off to be replaced by Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, while Jorginho started at the base of the midfield following late withdrawals from Mikel Merino (knee) and Thomas Partey (muscular). Nevertheless, Arteta was heartened by the performances put in by Jakub Kiwior and his other injury replacements with United's visit to Emirates Stadium on the horizon. "We had an issue with Gabby and then we had an issue with Ricci as well," he added. "Yesterday, we lost Thomas and Mikel and Myles [Lewis-Skelly], which was very bad news. "What I'm really happy about is Jakub has to come in and does really well. Oleks the same. Jorginho I thought was exceptional today. "That's the level. Every three days we're going to need everyone at their best and it's a good sign that the team can do that."Secretaries of State are being told that any outgoings which are not contributing towards one of Labour’s “priorities” must be cut as Rachel Reeves vows to wield “an iron fist against waste.” In letters sent by Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones, departments will be told to brace for “difficult” spending decisions in order to restore trust in the Government’s handling of the public finances. Every pound of departmental spending will be face a “line-by-line review” involving external finance experts from banks and think tanks in order to ensure it represents value for money, the Treasury said. The Chancellor will on Tuesday launch the next round of Government spending, and is expected to warn departments that they “cannot operate in a business-as-usual way when reviewing their budgets for the coming years”. She will insist that areas focused on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s “plan for change”, which includes targets to improve living standards across the country and build 1.5 million homes, must be prioritised. Ms Reeves said: “By totally rewiring how the Government spends money we will be able to deliver our plan for change and focus on what matters for working people. “The previous government allowed millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money to go to waste on poor value for money projects. We will not tolerate it; I said I would have an iron grip on the public finances and that means taking an iron fist against waste. “By reforming our public services, we will ensure they are up to scratch for modern day demands, saving money and delivering better services for people across the country. That’s why we will inspect every pound of Government spend, so that it goes to the right places and we put an end to all waste.” Under the Treasury’s plans, departments will ensure budgets are scrutinised by “challenge panels” of external experts including former senior management of Lloyd’s Banking Group, Barclays Bank and the Co-operative Group. These panels, which will also involve think tanks, academics and the private sector, will advise on which spending “is or isn’t necessary”, the ministry said. The Treasury said work has already begun, with an evaluation of the £6.5 million spent on a scheme that placed social workers in schools finding “no evidence of positive impact on social care outcomes”. “Departments will be advised that where spending is not contributing to a priority, it should be stopped,” it said. “Although some of these decisions will be difficult, the Chancellor is clear that the public must have trust in the Government that it is rooting out waste and that their taxes are being spent on their priorities.” Ms Reeves had already announced efficiency and productivity savings of 2% across departments in her autumn budget as she seeks to put the public finances on a firmer footing. In a speech in east London, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden hinted at a further squeeze. “At the Budget the Chancellor demanded efficiency and productivity savings of 2% across departments – and there will be more to come,” he said. “As we launch the next phase of the spending review at its heart must be reform of the state in order to do a better job for the public.”

Red Bulls go into MLS Cup final with distinctly Canadian flavour in front officeSenator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) reacted with characteristic bluntness to the withdrawal of former Representative Matt Gaetz from consideration for U.S. Attorney General . Speaking to reporters at the Capitol on November 21, Fetterman sarcastically remarked on the news, which came after fresh revelations about Gaetz's alleged misconduct. "Holy s–t! I didn't see that coming," Fetterman said, adding, "Like yes, he was the ultimate troll... You better pace yourself though—it's not even Thanksgiving yet. We don't have to take unserious things so seriously, like the world's gonna spin off its axis." John Fetterman on Matt Gaetz withdrawing name: Holy shit! I didn't see that coming! @DailyCaller pic.twitter.com/OO43H1d9Ck Gaetz , nominated by President-elect Donald Trump, faced widespread skepticism about his fitness for the role due to ongoing ethics investigations and a history of scandal. His withdrawal Thursday followed CNN's reporting of new allegations regarding a sexual encounter between Gaetz and a 17-year-old. The allegations and mounting criticism led Gaetz to step down , stating he did not want to be a "distraction" to Trump's transition team. Fetterman mocked the situation further, joking that Trump might commemorate the incident: "I just heard that Trump is going to issue a new silver dollar to commemorate that. So, I think that's going to be the next cycle." Earlier in the month, Fetterman had described Gaetz's nomination as "God-tier trolling" by Trump, suggesting it was meant to provoke outrage rather than a serious consideration. Despite his critique of Gaetz, Fetterman praised some of Trump's other cabinet picks, such as Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for Secretary of State, calling them "serious choices." Sen. Several opposition parties have joined forces with the IPC on possibly taking legal action against the Electoral Commission of Namibia over what they say were irregularities in Wednesday’s elections and the two-day extended voting period. In a clarification to The Namibian on Monday evening, AR leader Job Amupanda said his party was exploring its own avenues in taking action. “AR is an entity on its own,” he said. At a press briefing earlier on Monday, Amupanda said his party will not align with other political parties. “We are a serious organisation. It is important for you to discuss and analyse and resolve before you go and meet outsiders. How do we then go already and meet other political parties without making a scientific and objective and subjective assessment of the election? So the first priority for us is to understand and take a position. It’s not our priority to join other political parties or to join other things,” Amupanda said.

YouTube’s reigning king, MrBeast, just dropped his latest banger, "Beat Ronaldo, Win $1,000,000," and it’s packed with star power. The video features Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Brady, Olympic sprinter Noah Lyles, MLB slugger Bryce Harper, golf champ Bryson DeChambeau, and even IShowSpeed. But here’s the kicker: Ronaldo and IShowSpeed didn’t actually meet, leaving fans of both creators absolutely crushed. In classic MrBeast style, the stakes are sky-high. Everyday contestants went head-to-head with these sports legends, trying to win up to $100,000 per challenge—or in Ronaldo’s case, a jaw-dropping $1 million. If they lost? The cash went to the athlete’s chosen charity, so either way, it’s a win-win. The video opens with high school quarterback Jake taking on Tom Brady in a wild balloon-popping contest, aiming for precision and speed. Then, MrBeast’s buddy Jonah races Noah Lyles in a brutal 200-meter sprint. Even IShowSpeed jumps into the action, blazing through a 50-meter race against Lyles in a clip that had fans hyped. Next up, social media star Big Justice faced Bryce Harper in a home run derby, while amateur golfer Aaron took a swing at beating Bryson DeChambeau in a one-hole showdown. Each challenge was as intense as it was unpredictable. The grand finale? Cristiano Ronaldo himself went head-to-head with Khalid, a football superfan, in a high-pressure target shootout with $1 million on the line. It was the perfect cap to a video that delivered on drama, laughs, and epic sports moments. While fans loved the action, the missed chance for IShowSpeed and Ronaldo to finally meet has become the ultimate "what if?" moment. Still, with MrBeast bringing together this level of star power, it’s safe to say no one’s leaving disappointed.

Non-GAAP Measure The Company presents adjusted EBITDA, which is not a measurement of financial performance under generally accepted accounting principles in the United States ("GAAP"). The Company's non-GAAP "Adjusted EBITDA" excludes (i) impacts of interest, taxes, and depreciation; (ii) the Company's share-based compensation expense, unrealized gains/losses on securities, and, changes in the fair value of contingent consideration with respect to previously completed acquisitions, all of which are non-cash items that the Company believes are not reflective of the Company's general business performance, and for which the accounting requires management judgment, and the resulting expenses could vary significantly in comparison to other companies; (iii) non-cash impairment losses related to long-lived assets (including goodwill); (iv) realized gains and losses on sales of equity securities, the amounts of which are directly related to the unrealized gains and losses that are also excluded; (v) legal fees related to litigation and various transactions, which fees management does not believe are reflective of the Company's ongoing operating activities; (vi) gains and losses on disposal of assets, the majority of which are related to obsolete or unrepairable machines that are no longer deployed; (vii) gains and losses related to discontinued operations that would not be applicable to the Company's future business activities; and (viii) severance expenses. The Company previously excluded non-cash impairment losses related to digital assets and realized gains and losses on sales of bitcoin from its calculation of adjusted EBITDA, but has determined such items are part of the Company's normal ongoing operations and will no longer be excluding them from its calculation of adjusted EBITDA. Management believes that providing this non-GAAP financial measure that excludes these items allows for meaningful comparisons between the Company's core business operating results and those of other companies, and provides the Company with an important tool for financial and operational decision making and for evaluating its own core business operating results over different periods of time. In addition to management's internal use of non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA, management believes that adjusted EBITDA is also useful to investors and analysts in comparing the Company's performance across reporting periods on a consistent basis. Management believes the foregoing to be the case even though some of the excluded items involve cash outlays and some of them recur on a regular basis (although management does not believe any of such items are normal operating expenses necessary to generate the Company's bitcoin related revenues). For example, the Company expects that share-based compensation expense, which is excluded from adjusted EBITDA, will continue to be a significant recurring expense over the coming years and is an important part of the compensation provided to certain employees, officers, and directors. Additionally, management does not consider any of the excluded items to be expenses necessary to generate the Company's bitcoin related revenue. The Company's adjusted EBITDA measure may not be directly comparable to similar measures provided by other companies in our industry, as other companies in the Company's industry may calculate non-GAAP financial results differently. The Company's adjusted EBITDA is not a measurement of financial performance under GAAP and should not be considered as an alternative to operating (loss) income or any other measure of performance derived in accordance with GAAP. Although management utilizes internally and presents adjusted EBITDA, the Company only utilizes that measure supplementally and does not consider it to be a substitute for, or superior to, the information provided by GAAP financial results. Accordingly, adjusted EBITDA is not meant to be considered in isolation of, and should be read in conjunction with, the information contained in the Company's consolidated financial statements, which have been prepared in accordance with GAAP. Croatia’s incumbent President Zoran Milanovic won most of the votes in the first round of a presidential election on Sunday but must face a runoff against a ruling party candidate to secure another five-year term. With nearly all of the votes counted, left-leaning Mr Milanovic won 49% while his main challenger Dragan Primorac, a candidate of the ruling conservative HDZ party, trailed far behind with 19%. Pre-election polls had predicted that the two would face off in the second round on January 12, as none of the eight presidential election contenders were projected to get more than 50% of the vote. Mr Milanovic thanked his supporters but warned that “this was just a first run”. “Let’s not be triumphant, let’s be realistic, firmly on the ground,” he said. “We must fight all over again. It’s not over till it’s over.” Mr Milanovic, the most popular politician in Croatia, has served as prime minister in the past. Populist in style, the 58-year-old has been a fierce critic of current Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and continuous sparring between the two has been a recent hallmark of Croatia’s political scene. Mr Plenkovic has sought to portray the vote as one about Croatia’s future in the EU and Nato. He has labelled Mr Milanovic “pro-Russian” and a threat to Croatia’s international standing. “The difference between him (Mr Primorac) and Milanovic is quite simple: Milanovic is leading us East, Primorac is leading us West,” he said. Though the presidency is largely ceremonial in Croatia, an elected president holds political authority and acts as the supreme commander of the military. Mr Milanovic has criticised the Nato and European Union support for Ukraine and has often insisted that Croatia should not take sides. He has said Croatia should stay away from global disputes, thought it is a member of both Nato and the EU. Mr Milanovic has also blocked Croatia’s participation in a Nato-led training mission for Ukraine, declaring that “no Croatian soldier will take part in somebody else’s war”. His main rival in the election, Mr Primorac, has stated that “Croatia’s place is in the West, not the East”. However, his bid for the presidency has been marred by a high-level corruption case that landed Croatia’s health minister in jail last month and which featured prominently in pre-election debates. Trailing a distant third in the pre-election polls is Marija Selak Raspudic, a conservative independent candidate. She has focused her election campaign on the economic troubles of ordinary citizens, corruption and issues such as population decline in the country of some 3.8 million. Sunday’s presidential election is Croatia’s third vote this year, following a snap parliamentary election in April and the European Parliament balloting in June.

Tudor and Cashel Township held a Lunch and Learn at their community centre on Nov. 26, where the township’s Historical Society presented to attendees on how Tudor and Cashel came to be through time. Made possible by the Ontario Seniors Accessibility Grant, there was also a hot lunch of soup, sandwiches and dessert provided by Wattle and Daub Café. Councillor Elain Holloway comments on this look back into Tudor and Cashel’s past to Bancroft This Week. The Lunch and Learn on Nov. 26 was facilitated by the Tudor and Cashel Historical Society’s Bob Clarke, Marie Whittaker and Gina Sikama, although Sikama was unable to attend due to another commitment, but sent her regards. Holloway told the crowd that they were an amateur historical society and what they know and what they found out they collected themselves through research and conversations through their lives here over the decades. “Their hope is to encourage you to become more involved, if not with the township’s history but with that of your own families. There’s a history that goes away if you don’t have that history and hang on to it,” she says. Clarke said that there was so much history and so much had changed over the past 175 years and that as they go through it, hopefully they’ll answer some of the attendees’ questions. “We’re just going to skim the surface today. If there’s an interest in another one of these presentations that deals with logging or mining, we’ll certainly give it an effort to do that,” he says. Clarke told Bancroft This Week back in 2020 in the Bancroft This Week article “Tudor and Cashel’s history illuminates residents’ souls,” that they’d gotten the idea to pursue the historical society from the history section on the township’s website in 2017, as resident Joan Donaldson had preserved quite a bit of the area’s history. “The history of the area here is quite a story, going back to the 1850s. A lot of the older folks are passing and their stories are going to be lost and have been lost. But there’s a lot of their siblings and relatives in the area so that that history can still be preserved. So basically, we live here on the Heritage Trail and the old hotel which used to be called Rickett’s Hotel and the railroad went right by and the station was out front of the place. Well, the history kind of grows on you and I started collecting a bit of information on the railroad and then it kind of snowballed,” he said at the time. On Nov. 26, Holloway presented what Sikama would have said that day, based on some notes provided, called “where it began to now,” going from Upper Canada to the establishment of Canada in 1867, and from the initial farming that didn’t pan out too well, to mining and logging that sustained Tudor and Cashel over the years. “Today, people travel to Bancroft to Belleville to Trenton and points in between to make a living. They could work closer to home but they don’t and this is their home. It’s where they want to live, hunt and fish. The lumber industry will continue, mine exploration, and maybe someday land will be cleared and farmed again using new machinery and technology. Whatever the occupation, families live in Tudor and Cashel because their roots are here and because the rocks, trees, wetlands and lakes draw their heart strings,” she says. Whittaker went next, giving the crowd a taste of what it was like toward the end of the farming era (1850 to 1950) and what family life was like, based upon her own personal experiences. She said life was never dull and there was always something to do. She recalled many memories of life on the Ridge at her family’s farms. “I have vague memories of using coal oil lamps in my Uncle George’s house. I’m not sure when the hydro came to the Ridge, but it was quite an event when the telephones came in. Each house got their own ring and very little privacy,” she says. Clarke finished off the presentation by looking at the early settlers to Tudor and Cashel and the reasons why they came and persevered in the area, like free 50 to 100 acre lots, hope for a better life, and the logging and mining industries. He then looked at the histories of Tudor Township, established in 1865 and Cashel Township, established in 1869 before they amalgamated in 1897 and the history of Tudor and Cashel since then. For instance, Clarke talked about the history of the Central Ontario Railroad and the effect it had on Tudor and Cashel, initially transporting iron ore and later logs through the area, and the effect that the building of Hwy 62 had on the railroad traffic over time, until the last train came through in 1975 and the tracks were removed in 1980. Clarke concluded by says that there’s just so many stories they could spend days telling folks what they’ve been able to pull together from various sources over the years. “We’re going to try to come up with some way to preserve this for the next generation. Most people really aren’t that interested in it until later in life when they think ‘oh, wonder what that was all about?’” he says. Clarke told Bancroft This Week that he hoped the presentation answered a few questions for people in attendance and that it was just interesting. “What we’re trying to do is get an interest in this just so that this stuff preserves. We’re even doing a book that’s in the editing stages but it just skims off the top of what we could put in it and if there’s interest we could do more. It’s to get the next generation thinking ‘okay, we’ll carry on with this,’” he says. Holloway told Bancroft This Week that the Historical Society Lunch and Learn was the best attended, drawing residents including those from neighbouring townships. “The presentation was excellent, very informative giving a glimpse at how Tudor and Cashel came to be. I believe the participants were equally captivated, evident with their interaction and comments, leaving wanting to learn even more. There is so much more yet to share and Bob Clarke, Marie Whittaker and Gina Sikama are eager to come again. The Ontario Seniors Accessibility Grant has provided excellent opportunities for our residents, reducing isolation and encouraging ongoing participation,” she says. “It was an excellent presentation.”

A pair of teams with minimal rest will face off in Nassau, Bahamas, on Sunday when No. 22 St. John takes on Georgia. St. John's (5-1), which will play its third game in four days, began the stretch in the Bahamas Championship on Thursday, dropping a heartbreaker to No. 13 Baylor. The Red Storm led by 18 in the first half before Baylor forced overtime. From there, St. John's rallied from five down with 1:47 left to send the game to a second overtime, where it saw Baylor knock down a pair of 3-pointers in the final seven seconds -- including Jeremy Roach's buzzer-beater -- to knock off the Red Storm 99-98. In the third-place game on Friday, St. John's breezed past Virginia 80-55. RJ Luis Jr. led the way with 18 points and four steals, followed by Kadary Richmond's 12 points, as the Red Storm took a one-point lead with 15:21 left in the first half and didn't trail again. "I'm really impressed with our guys, coming off a double-overtime, extremely emotional loss," St. John's head coach Rick Pitino said. "To respond that way was extremely impressive, both offensively and defensively." Pitino, in his second year with the Red Storm, was moved by something off the court on Friday, involving captain Zuby Ejiofor, who chipped in eight points, nine boards, two steals and two blocks. Ejiofor was serenaded by St. John's fans during the win, following his two missed free throws at the end of double overtime against Baylor. "When you've only been in a job for a year, you search for things you love about a place," Pitino said. "Tonight I found out what I love about St. John's. Our fans chanted Zuby's name the whole game, which doesn't happen anywhere else in America. I was really impressed with our fans and I thank them for making Zuby feel good, because he gives you all the energy." Luis leads the Red Storm with 17.3 points per game, followed by Ejiofor (10.7), Aaron Scott (10.5), Deivon Smith (10.3) and Richmond (10.2). Georgia enters Sunday's matchup looking to rebound from its first loss after falling to No. 15 Marquette 80-69 on Saturday. Georgia (5-1) battled back from a 15-point, second-half deficit, but was held to just three points over the final 4:57 in Saturday's loss. Blue Cain led the Bulldogs with a season-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers. "It's a process. It's a journey with this team," Bulldogs head coach Mike White said. "It's about continuing to make strides, continuing to protect our culture. ... At the end of the day, wins and losses are going to take care of themselves. We just have to embrace the process and enjoy it." Five-star freshman recruit Asa Newell was held to a season-low nine points but leads the team with 15.5 points per game. Silas Demary Jr. is second with 13.8. --Field Level Media

The five-year strategic action plan to strengthen ties between India and Italy, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni will lead to improved ties between the two nations, a senior Italian minister said on Saturday. Adolfo Urso , Minister of Business and Made in Italy, was speaking in Mumbai at the Villaggio Italia exposition , being held to coincide with the port of call of Amerigo Vespucci , a 93-year-old Italian Navy ship used for training and supporting national diplomacy. The plan, announced at the G20 summit , focuses on 10 key areas including defense, trade, clean energy, and connectivity, aiming to deepen collaboration and boost economic ties. The Italian minister referred to five bilateral meetings between Modi and Meloni over the last two years, and said, "The time is right. Urso said that India and Italy, due to their "geographical, cultural, political, economic and productive conditions", represent a link between Europe and Asia. Referring to the Russia-Ukraine war, Urso highlighted the importance of maritime routes "in the backdrop of what is unfortunately happening on the eastern continental border of Europe". He also referred to the Blue Raman submarine cable project, undertaken by Italian firm Sparkle. The project, which aims to connect Mumbai and Genoa, represents a significant step towards integrating the two nations into a broader digital connectivity framework. Urso said his ministry has created an increasingly convenient climate for foreign investments. He said there are various procedures depending on the quantum of investment, if it is up to 25 million Euros, or up to 400 million Euros, or above one billion Euros. "My ministry provides each investor with a guide who accompanies him in every phase of the investment process. There is a map already on the internet in which over 200 industrial sites are identified," he said. Urso said industries will grow together on the "manufacturing platforms" created by the Modi government. PRICE NEW YORK (AP) — Chad Chronister, Donald Trump’s pick to run the Drug Enforcement Administration, said Tuesday he was withdrawing his name from consideration, becoming the second person selected by the president-elect to bow out quickly after being nominated for a position requiring Senate confirmation. Sheriff Chronister, the top law enforcement officer in Hillsborough County, Florida, said in a post on X that he was backing away from the opportunity, which he called “the honor of a lifetime.” “Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration,” Chronister wrote. He did not elaborate, and Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Chronister follows former Republican congressman Matt Gaetz , Trump’s first pick to serve as attorney general, in withdrawing his name for a post in the administration. Gaetz withdrew following scrutiny over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. Trump’s pick of Chronister for the DEA job drew backlash from conservatives, who raised concerns over his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and his saying that his office “does not engage in federal immigration enforcement activities.” In March 2020, Chronister arrested the pastor of a megachurch who held services with hundreds of people and violated a safer-at-home order in place aimed at limiting the spread of the Covid virus. “Shame on this pastor, their legal staff and the leaders of this staff for forcing us to do our job. That’s not what we wanted to do during a declared state of emergency,” Chronister said at the time. “We are hopeful that this will be a wakeup call.” U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky, was among those airing public complaints, saying Chronister should be “disqualified” for the arrest. Others flagged comments Chronister made in a video about Florida’s immigration laws that he released in 2023 that circulated again online after Trump named him last weekend. We do not target individuals based on their immigration status. That’s the authority of federal agencies.” Trump has made a sweeping crackdown on immigration a central focus of his campaign and his aims for his coming administration. Just over a year ago, soon after the dramatic exit of Francis deSouza as Illumina’s CEO, the company announced that it had appointed a new leader, Jacob Thaysen, PhD. The initial reactions were mixed. Thaysen had held multiple roles in the life sciences, most recently at Agilent Technologies. But despite his experience in the life sciences business, he was unknown to many in the genomics world. reached out for an interview when he first took over, but Illumina declined the invitation. A lot has changed over the past year. Last November, secured an interview with Thaysen at the annual meeting of the American Society for Human Genetics (ASHG), which was held in Denver, CO. He described how the past year has been, why he took the job in the first place, and what he is looking forward to doing in the future. Yeah, for sure! I’m originally from Denmark, and I have a PhD in physics. I don’t have a biology background, so I’ve done some self-learning there. After my PhD, I founded a startup company that used MEMS [microelectromechanical systems] technology for making small sensors that could be used for many different applications, but really for biochemical interactions. I did that for four years as CTO of the company, and I enjoyed it. But in the end, the technology was not strong enough to survive. It was driven by venture capital, and it had good momentum, but we could see it was not really differentiated enough. After that, I moved into management consulting for a few years to look at something completely different. I spent a few years there and worked with nonscientific companies—airline companies, freight companies, media companies. I learned that every segment has the same challenges and that having the right strategy, the right operations, the right execution, and of course the right people is everything. From there, I was hired to be the chief of staff at the cancer diagnostic company, Dako, and I really enjoyed that, too. I didn’t really need to be in the life sciences industry. But after a few years at Dako, I saw the impact of working with patients and what it means to fight cancer. That crawled under my skin, and I got really passionate about it. A few years in, I was offered the chance to become head of R&D. After I had spent all this time getting out of science! But it was one of my best jobs. It was really fun being there. Dako was a Danish company that was acquired by Agilent because Agilent wanted to move into IVD [in vitro diagnostics]. With that acquisition, I was offered the chance to run the genomics business for Agilent, in the United States. I thought that I would try that for a few years, and then go back to Denmark. But after six months, I told my wife, I don’t think we should go back. It’s way too fun, and this weather is way too good! It was also very clear—and this was back in 2013—that genomics needed to move much further into IVD and into cancer. And I have a unique background. I know IVD from the inside out. I know what the IVD laboratories look like and what the clinical laboratories are looking for. I also learned a lot about genomics at that period of time. And then I got the call last summer, for the opportunity in San Diego. To me it felt like coming home. I am very passionate about fighting cancer and I am very passionate about genomics. And there is just no better place to be than Illumina to do those things. There was a lot going on at Illumina. Everybody was sitting on the sideline, with their popcorn, looking at the Illumina show. There were so many opinions. It’s unbelievable how interested people are in Illumina. But you can either decide to sit at the sideline or you can decide to step in and be a part of a solution. You have one life, you have one career, you have one opportunity. And Illumina is a strong company. I knew that there would be a few years when it is going to be tough. But that is true of all companies. Every company will face challenging times. You just don’t know when that will happen. But in the end, what drove me was the desire to be in a company that is really doing something transformative for health. And yes, there are some challenges, but I believe we will get through them. We are on a great trajectory now. I only have my own career to look at. It’s difficult to say, but I think I learned a few things early in my career. Starting up a company directly out of school, nobody told me how to do a competitive analysis, or build a business plan, or really anything about running a company. So, I had to rely on learning on the job and on common sense and instincts. And that common sense can take you quite far. I learned that very quickly because that’s the only way to survive. When I was a strategy consultant, I learned the main components of how to think about this, because I saw so many different businesses and industries. Look, in the end, companies all have the same challenges. It’s about how it’s led. It’s about a clarity of strategy, a clarity on what you expect from people. And it’s about a plan that everybody understands and can execute on. I stayed in Agilent/Dako for many years, and I had many different roles which gave me confidence that I could move into something new. I can build clarity on strategy, and I can successfully execute it. But every new job, every new adventure, is different. So, I’m not just saying, “yeah, it’s just all going to be fine.” It’s hard work every day. But that’s what I like. I like doing this. In the end, you only have one life, and you only have one career. It was never important to me to be CEO. It was very important to me to be part of something where you can make an impact. When you have a patient sitting there, with the worst news they have ever got in their life, and they’ve just been told that they have cancer or another devastating disease, and we are there to help them fight that disease ... I’m proud to be a part of that. That is what is important to me. And then everything else in the end becomes daily challenges. There will always be ups and downs in jobs. We all have that. But I want to be a part of that, and I think Illumina is that company. And that’s super-fascinating. We have the power, and the position in the market, to really make a difference. But I also found, coming in—and I think this is very natural—that it’s difficult to keep your feet on the ground when you have been a market leader for a long time. And at some point, you start to believe you have all the answers yourself. I think we’ve seen others go through the same thing. So, when you’ve been successful for many years, you need to remind yourself: What are you? Who are you? What is your true calling? When I came in, my clear focus was to make sure we went back and focused on who we are as a company. And there were a few things that, for me, needed to be put front and center. One was, as you said, the marriage with our customers. Illumina has done tremendous business because we have worked very deeply with our customers and the industry. And I felt we had lost a little bit of that. You’ll see here at ASHG, as we are coming out with new innovations, researchers speaking on the behalf of the technology to show what is in our R&D pipeline. So, we don’t just surprise people or customers with what is coming out. We engage them into developing the right solutions. We are separating GRAIL out and going back to being a company that is really focused on the tools themselves. That doesn’t mean that we’re never going into IVD or into the clinic. But we can build the sequencer and the workflows—from sample prep all the way into informatics—in different directions. We can take it both toward the clinic, but also toward researchers. This is who we are. This is what we do extremely well. The other part is focusing on operational excellence, which sounds boring but is important if we want to grow. We are a $4.5 billion company, but we want to be a $10 billion company. To get to that, we need to always change ourselves, the processes, the way we work, the way we engage with each other. If we want to be much bigger, there are certain ways we need to change how we work. And clearly, we’ve been super-successful. And when you grow a lot, you tend to solve a lot of your problems by adding more people. And even though that’s a good thing to do, and we love getting more people into the company, it might not drive productivity. In the end, you end up being slower. You end up not being as agile as you want to be. That is a key pillar in our strategy and in who we are as a company—both customer centric and strongly committed to innovation. But we’re also committed to keep improving who we are and how we do things. No. When you say tools, you think about an instrument. That’s not how I think about it. So, let me qualify that a little bit. Fundamentally, we are developing solutions for labs, whether they’re clinical labs or research labs. And they are using tools, but those tools are not just instruments, they are workflow solutions. I would argue that 15 years ago, or 10 years ago, people were excited just to be doing sequencing. But now, it’s about moving toward the outcome and what you can use those solutions for. And the more we can simplify it, the more information will come out of it. And it will help the scientists, or clinicians, use that outcome either to make treatment decisions or, of course, to expand science. This is who we are. And that’s why I say that tools are also building workflows. There is a lot of innovation coming out now that is pushing us from being a genomics company to a multiomics company. We will always have a foundation in genomics. But we envision that in the future, you will be able to look at multiomes using the sequencing platform. That is super-powerful, and I truly believe that it is going to change biology. I’m not sure I fully agree with that. I mean, I think that companies that are not Illumina would claim that. But we still haven’t really taken full benefit of the power of the sequencing platform itself and the ability to look at many things at the same time, whether it’s on the genomic, epigenetic, or proteomic level. So, if you have a powerful tool like the [NovaSeq] X, you can do all of these different types of assays. You can use the same instrument with a different type of workflow to do genomics, proteomics, epigenetics. Some of those can be combined, others will be different workflows, but you don’t necessarily need many different tools. Whenever you get a new job, there are always surprises. But on the big themes that you mentioned, I knew going into the job that there were things that we needed to take care of the first year. So, in that sense, it was not frustrating. It was more like, okay, let’s work through this. Let’s find the right way of doing this in a way that makes sense for everyone. And I think, here, a year later, we did that. Of course, when you sit in the middle of it, it can be frustrating. And externally, it could look unclear. But we had a very good understanding on the steps we needed to walk through, and I think we came out with a good result. Under the circumstances, this turned out as well as it could. Looking back on the year, we have done a lot to get clarity on who we are as a company. We have done a lot to clean up and make sure we can focus on our calling. We have done a lot to set up a new leadership team, bringing some people in and promoting other people who I believe are the right ones to move the company forward. We have put a strategy in place and started to engage much deeper with the customers, and build some of those customer relationships, that I think have been on a pause for a while. So, when I look back, I’m very pleased with where we are. But I’m very ambitious also. So, this is just a start.Walmart’s mega “Black Friday Deals” sale is coming to a close, but there’s still time to score major savings on those holiday gifts online now. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau flies to Florida to meet with Trump after tariffs threat WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has flown to Florida to have dinner with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club after Trump threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products. Joining Trump and Trudeau at dinner were Trump's picks for commerce secretary, interior secretary and national security adviser, and the three men's wives. From the Canadian side, the dinner guests included Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, whose responsibilities include border security. Trump’s transition did not respond to questions about what they had discussed or whether the conversation alleviated Trump’s concerns about the border. A smiling Trudeau declined comment upon returning to his West Palm Beach hotel late Friday. Emboldened 'manosphere' accelerates threats and demeaning language toward women after US election CHICAGO (AP) — An emboldened fringe of right-wing “manosphere” influencers has seized on Donald Trump’s presidential win to justify and amplify misogynistic derision and threats online. Many have appropriated a 1960s abortion rights rallying cry, declaring “Your body, my choice,” and have been using it publicly on college campuses and even in public schools. While none of the current online rhetoric is being amplified by Trump, experts say many young men see the former president’s return to the White House as vindication of their views on women. For many women, the words are a worrying sign of what might lie ahead as some men perceive the election results as a rebuke of reproductive rights and women’s rights. Syrian insurgents are inside Aleppo in a major setback for Assad as government forces regroup BEIRUT (AP) — Thousands of Syrian insurgents have fanned out inside Syria's largest city Aleppo a day after storming it with little resistance from government troops. Syria's army said troops have redeployed to prepare for a counteroffensive. Witnesses said insurgents were seen Saturday at landmarks in Aleppo for the first time since 2016, when they were expelled by government forces backed by Russia and Iran. The surprise offensive is a major embarrassment for Syrian President Bashar Assad, who has regained total control of the city eight years ago. An Israeli strike in Gaza kills workers with World Central Kitchen charity DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli airstrike on a car in the Gaza Strip on Saturday killed five people including employees of World Central Kitchen. The charity says it is “urgently seeking more details” after Israel’s military said it targeted a WCK worker who had been part of the Hamas attack that sparked the war. The charity in an email says it is “heartbroken” by the airstrike and that it had no knowledge anyone in the car had alleged ties to the Oct. 7, 2023 attack, saying it is “working with incomplete information.” It says it is pausing operations in Gaza. Lebanese fisherman hope ceasefire with Israel means normal life returning TYRE, Lebanon (AP) — The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is bringing hope for normality back to many in southern Lebanon. That includes fishermen who’ve long launched their single-engine wooden boats into the Mediterranean at dawn. For months, Israel imposed a siege that kept hundreds of fishermen at this ancient Phoenician port ashore. That upended their lives and dealt the industry a major blow. The port siege also cut people off from key ingredients for traditional Lebanese dishes. As war devastated their country, the loss of fish damaged a deep association with home. Now, the possibility of renewed fishing is helping fuel hope. How Brazilian police say Bolsonaro plotted a coup to stay in office SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s Federal Police have formally accused former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others of plotting a coup to keep him in office. The plot was allegedly comprised of several components and substantiated by evidence and testimony in the agency's 884-page report. The pieces of the puzzle include laying the groundwork by systematically sowing distrust of the electoral system among the populace. It also includes drafting a decree to give the plot a veneer of legal basis and pressuring top military brass to go along with the plan. Bolsonaro and his main allies have denied any wrongdoing or involvement and accuse authorities of political persecution. More than 100 arrested as Georgian police clash with protesters over suspension of EU talks TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — More than 100 demonstrators were arrested overnight in Georgia as protesters clashed with police following the government’s decision to suspend negotiations to join the European Union, the country’s Interior Ministry said. Friday marked the second straight night of protests after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of the country’s ruling Georgian Dream party announced the suspension the previous day. The Associated Press saw protesters in Tbilisi being chased and beaten by police as demonstrators rallied in front of the country's parliament building. The violence follows Georgian Dream’s disputed victory in the Oct. 26 election, which was widely seen as a referendum on the country’s aspirations to join the European Union. Romania's parliamentary vote risks being overshadowed by presidential race chaos BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romanians are preparing to go to the polls in a parliamentary vote that will determine a new government and prime minister to lead the European Union and NATO member country. However, Sunday's vote is sandwiched between a two-round presidential race and is overshadowed by controversies and chaos following the outcome of the first vote. While the president has significant decision-making powers in areas such as national security and foreign policy, the prime minister is the head of the nation’s government. Sunday’s vote will determine the formation of the country’s 466-seat legislature. North Korea's Kim vows steadfast support for Russia’s war in Ukraine SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country will “invariably support” Russia’s war in Ukraine as he met Russia's visiting defense chief. A Russia military delegation led by Defense Minister Andrei Belousov arrived in North Korea on Friday as international concerns about the two countries’ expanding cooperation deepened after North Korea sent thousands of troops to Russia. During a Friday meeting, Kim and Belousov reached “a satisfactory consensus” on issues on how to further boost strategic partnership and defend each country’s sovereignty and security interests, state media said. Great Lakes, Plains and Midwest forecast to be hit with snow and dangerous cold into next week BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The first big snowfall of the season is threatening to bury towns in New York along lakes Erie and Ontario as the hectic holiday travel and shopping weekend winds down. Numbing cold and heavy snow could persist into next week and cause hazards in the Great Lakes, Plains and Midwest regions. A state of emergency was declared for parts of New York, making it problematic for scores of Thanksgiving travelers trying to return home. This week’s blast of frigid Arctic air also brought bitterly cold temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit below average to the Northern Plains. Cold air was expected to move over the eastern third of the U.S. by Monday, the weather service said, with temperatures about 10 degrees below average.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Zahir Abdus-Salaam ran for a touchdown and caught another as Western Michigan defeated Eastern Michigan 26-18 on Saturday to become bowl eligible, snapping a three-game losing streak. Abdus-Salaam scored on a 22-yard run for a 23-8 lead in the third quarter and he celebrated by jumping into a snowbank bordering the end zone. The Broncos (6-6, 5-3 Mid-American Conference) blocked a punt for safety that started a run of 16 points in under four minutes. Abdus-Salaam scored on a 31-yard screen pass then Joey Pope recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to set up Jalen Buckley's 15-yard TD run with 19 seconds before the half ended. Eastern Michigan's Delmert Mimms II scored two third-quarter touchdowns. The teams exchanged field goals for the only fourth-quarter scoring. The Eagles got the ball back with 2:18 remaining but on their first play Bilhal Kone intercepted a tipped pass. Eastern Michigan (5-7, 2-6) lost its last five games. Abdus-Salaam rushed for 135 yards and Buckley 103 on 19 carries apiece. Hayden Wolff threw for 126 yards and a score. Abdus-Salaam had 40 yards receiving. Mimms rushed for 127 yards on 18 carries. Cole Snyder was only 7 of 22 for 91 yards passing. AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll and https://apnews.com/hub/college-football . Trump’s lawyers urge judge to toss his hush money convictionPresident-elect Donald Trump is considering rearranging White House press briefings in a move that could leave establishment media outlets out to dry. Instead of hostile legacy media outlets, Trump could seat new media hosts such as Megyn Kelly or Joe Rogan. Donald Trump Jr. revealed the plan Monday on his podcast, Triggered with Donald Trump Jr ., with Michael Knowles. Knowles inquired if “Karoline Leavitt is looking at the new press briefing room chart, [if] maybe it’s time to reorder that chart and maybe take away some people’s seats.” Donald Trump, Karoline Leavitt (X/Karoline Leavitt) Trump Jr. responded, “We’re gonna break some news here,” continuing, “I literally had this conversation with — I was flying back, I was on the plane with my father, I think it was coming back from the SpaceX launch with Elon [Musk] last week. And we were talking about the podcast world and some of our friends and Rogan and guys like you.” He revealed his father responded, “That’s a great idea, Don.” “So that may be something in the works,” Trump Jr. added. The White House briefing room holds seats for only 49 credentialed members of the press. Yet while the White House controls who is credentialed, the independent White House Correspondents’ Association decides who is seated, and where. WATCH — Sebastian Gorka Reveals How President Trump Rejects the Swamp Status Quo: During his first administration, Trump temporarily banned CNN’s Jim Acosta from the briefing room. The White House relented after CNN launched a legal skirmish, and Acosta returned to briefings. Podcasts have quickly gained prominence, including significant gains since Trump left office. But the White House Correspondents’ Association may be unlikely to welcome new media into their fold. It’s unknown if Rogan or Kelly will be interested in being seated for press briefings. Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow also appeared on the episode of Triggered , during which Trump Jr. suggested Marlow should take over MSNBC if Musk buys the struggling network. Raymond Gerald Gerry BiggsBy Arpan Chaturvedi NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Adani Group founder Gautam Adani responded for the first time on Saturday to allegations by U.S. authorities that he was part of a $265 million bribery scheme, saying that his ports-to-power conglomerate was committed to world class regulatory compliance. The indictment is the second major crisis to hit Adani in just two years, sending shockwaves across India and beyond. One Indian state is reviewing a power deal with the group, France’s TotalEnergies decided to pause its investments and political rows over Adani have disrupted India’s parliament. “Less than two weeks back, we faced a set of allegations from the U.S. about compliance practices at Adani Green Energy. This is not the first time we have faced such challenges,” Adani said in a speech at an awards ceremony. U.S. authorities have accused Gautam Adani, his nephew and executive director Sagar Adani and managing director of Adani Green, Vneet S. Jaain, of being part of a scheme to pay bribes to secure Indian power supply contracts, and misleading U.S. investors during fundraisings in the country. Adani Group has denied the allegations, describing them as “baseless” and vowing to seek “all possible legal recourse”. “What I can tell you is that every attack makes us stronger and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group,” Adani said in the northern Indian city of Jaipur. “In today’s world, negativity spreads faster than facts, and as we work through the legal process, I want to re-confirm our absolute commitment to world class regulatory compliance,” he added, without giving further details. Adani Group’s finance chief on Friday rejected the allegations, while the Indian government said it had not received any U.S. request regarding the case. At one point, Adani Group’s listed companies saw as much as $34 billion wiped off their combined market value, but the stocks have recovered ground as some partners and investors have rallied behind the conglomerate. By Teeuwe Mevissen, senior macro strategist at Rabobank Did we leave behind the cost of living crisis? Obviously this depends on one’ s financial situation but for some money ain’t a thang as Jermaine Dupri would say. Recently the ‘art’ concept ‘ the comedian’ was auctioned via the legendary auction house Sotheby’s. A crypto ‘investor’ is now the new and proud owner of a banana and a roll of silver coloured duct tape. The price? $6.2 million and up from $ 120K in 2019 . This is still peanuts compared to the Magritte that was also auctioned at the other legendary auction house Christie’s and sold at the hefty price of $121 million . More money more problems? Or more money more bananas? It’s likely bananas since it all seems bananas nowadays. Yesterday for instance, Russia rattled it’s nuclear sabre once more because it apparently thinks that it’s only Russia’s privilege to use long range weapons obtained from its pariah partners. This was after the West had to discuss bananas once more to finally decide that certain types of weapon systems could be used by Ukraine - and if so - how. Or maybe instead we should discuss how to end the war in 24 hours without addressing and more importantly solving the true underlying problem(s). Looking at bitcoin one might think that all problems have already been solved. At the moment of writing bitcoin is approaching $100.000 because of expectations of a pro-crypto administration and also indicating that there is plenty of risk appetite in various corners. Stock markets also seem to have brushed off the recent escalation regarding the war in Ukraine with a Dow Jones close to reaching a level of 44,000. But when one takes a look at eurodollar, the exchange rate diving below a level of 1.05 seems to indicate that there is plenty of (geopolitical) risk and market participants are looking for safe havens. Weak data from Europe this morning, obviously are not helpful here. Regardless let’s discuss bananas simply because it’s all bananas. So let’s switch from bananas to economic data which in some cases is actually more related to each other than one might think. While the data calendar of yesterday did not have much to offer, today markets will be offered more insights. UK retail sales volumes fell 0.7% in October, after a revised 0.1% rise in September (down from 0.3%). Monthly retail sales look like a seesaw, often swayed by factors like weather. Over the three months to October 2024, volumes rose 0.8% compared to the three months to July, and 2.4% year-on-year. However, they remain 1.5% below pre-pandemic levels from February 2020, highlighting the lasting impact of weak growth and inflation. Germany’s Q3 growth was revised down to 0.1% q/q from 0.2%. While this still beats the initial forecasts, the economy’s business model is faltering, and storm clouds loom for next year, particularly with Trump tariffs on the horizon. Preliminary data measuring European purchase manager indices paint a harrowing picture of sentiment in both the services as well as in the manufacturing sector. Sentiment in the French services sector dropped sharply and came in much lower than expected (45.7 vs 49 expected). Sentiment in the French manufacturing sector also disappointed coming in at 43.2 vs 44.5 expected). Both indices indicating an economic downturn. The survey also highlighted that ‘cost pressures’ remain a concern (even in France where wage growth is considerably lower than in, for example, Germany). Operational expenses increased at the fastest rate in 3 months, albeit at a limited rate compared to the series average. Many panellists cited higher wages as the main reason for the cost increases. Output charges rose, but this was fully driven by services providers; manufacturing gave discounts to deal with competition. Germany also reported a manufacturing PMI of 43.2 vs 43 expected and sentiment in the services sector dropped to a level of 49.2 where a level of 51.7 was expected. The survey reports uncertainty among panellists, with services providers highlighting fewer new orders from manufacturers. Falling goods production and a lack of incoming new work therefore remains a major drag on overall economic output. This indicates that Germany’s economy is still very much struggling and that a new government will have plenty of issues to deal with.Exploring the Fundamentals of MCB Electrical Circuit Breakers: Types, Functions, and Applications 12-26-2024 06:54 PM CET | Industry, Real Estate & Construction Press release from: ABNewswire In today's technologically advanced world, ensuring electrical safety is paramount. These devices are designed to protect electrical circuits from damage caused by overloads and short circuits, making them indispensable in both residential and industrial settings. MCBs not only enhance the safety of electrical installations but also offer reliable and efficient control over electrical distribution. This article delves into the fundamentals of MCBs, highlighting the features, types, and applications of the MCB Terminal Electrical product, and provides insights into the company behind its innovation. Image: https://www.cncele.com/uploads/144.png Understanding MCBs [ https://www.cncele.com/mcb-terminal-electrical/ ] A Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) is an automatic electrical switch. It is designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short circuit. Unlike a fuse, which operates once and then needs to be replaced, an MCB can be reset to resume normal operation. This automatic switch is compact and designed for integration in various electrical systems, making it a vital component in modern electrical infrastructure. Basic Functioning of MCB The primary function of an MCB is to interrupt the flow of excessive current to prevent overheating and potential fire hazards. It operates on two key principles: thermal and magnetic trip mechanisms. The thermal mechanism uses a bimetallic strip that bends when heated by excessive current, breaking the circuit. The magnetic mechanism, on the other hand, uses an electromagnet that generates a magnetomotive force to separate the contacts when a sudden surge in current is detected, such as during a short circuit. This dual-action mechanism ensures prompt and efficient disconnection to safeguard electrical appliances and wiring. Importance of Overload and Short Circuit Protection Protection against overloads and short circuits is vital to maintaining electrical safety and operational integrity. Overloads can occur when the electrical demand exceeds the capacity of the circuit, leading to overheating and potential damage to wiring and connected devices. Short circuits, caused by direct contact between live and neutral wires, create a rapid increase in current flow that can result in severe damage and even fire. By providing automatic disconnection, MCBs prevent these dangerous conditions, helping to protect both the electrical system and the property it serves. This proactive measure not only ensures longevity and functionality but also adheres to safety regulations and standards. Classification of Instantaneous Release Types Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) come in various types, each classified by their instantaneous tripping characteristics. This classification helps in selecting the appropriate MCB based on the nature of the loads and the application requirements. The primary types are Type B, Type C, and Type D, each catering to different scenarios and electrical loads. 1.Type B (3-5)ln Type B MCBs are designed to trip instantaneously when the current flowing through them reaches between 3 to 5 times the rated current (In). These MCBs are highly sensitive to short-circuits and are best suited for applications with low inrush currents. Typical installation environments include residential settings and light commercial use, where the loads predominantly include lighting and small appliances. Their quick response ensures minimal damage in case of a fault, making them ideal for protecting circuits with more delicate equipment. 2.Type C (5-10)ln Type C MCBs trip instantaneously at currents ranging from 5 to 10 times the rated current. These are suitable for environments where moderate inrush currents are common, such as general industrial and commercial applications. They provide a balanced approach between sensitivity to low-level faults and robustness against transient surges caused by equipment like motors, transformers, and fluorescent lighting. Their versatility makes them a popular choice in buildings with mixed load types, offering reliable protection without frequent nuisance tripping. 3.Type D (10-20)ln Type D MCBs are designed to trip instantaneously when the current reaches 10 to 20 times the rated current. These are specifically tailored for environments that experience high inrush currents, typically seen in heavy industrial applications. Loads such as motors, welding equipment, X-ray machines, and large transformers can cause significant surges during startup. The higher tolerance of Type D MCBs ensures that these initial surges do not cause unwanted tripping while still providing prompt disconnection during genuine fault conditions, thus safeguarding heavy-duty equipment and infrastructure. Application Scenarios for Each Type Type B (3-5)ln: Ideal for domestic or light commercial applications with highly sensitive loads, such as household appliances and lighting circuits. These MCBs are best used in environments without significant surges in current, ensuring protection without unnecessary interruptions. Type C (5-10)ln: Suitable for both residential and industrial settings where moderate inrush currents are present. These MCBs find applications in protecting circuits powering motors, transformers, and lighting systems in commercial buildings, workshops, and small manufacturing units. Their balanced approach makes them adaptable for a wide range of uses. Type D (10-20)ln: Best for heavy industrial applications where high inrush currents are a norm. These are typically employed in protection scenarios involving large motors, high-powered machinery, and equipment with substantial startup current requirements. Industrial plants, manufacturing facilities, and environments with heavy-duty electrical equipment benefit the most from Type D MCBs. By understanding the characteristics and application scenarios of these MCB types, it becomes easier to select the right protection device for specific electrical installations, ensuring both safety and operational efficiency. With his debut novel ‘The Other Side of the Rainbow’ published recently, Niranjan Nayak, an English professor at Puri’s SCS College, embarks on a transformative journey — from the routine life of an academic to the exciting life of a writer. The novel is about a friend’s loving recall of a friendship formed at the college of their dreams a long time ago, a friendship that was cut short by a cruel stroke of fate. The novel transports the reader back to that past in an effort to comprehend what appeared incomprehensible to the actors themselves. A steady and unrelenting focus on the thought processes, delineated through two ‘I’ narrations, Arun’s and Rajiv’s that alternate with each other, lifts the novel from the plane of a light-hearted campus novel to a serious engagement with the labyrinthine alleyways of the mind. The verse with which the prologue opens sets the stage for the excavation of the past. Not an easy task given the failure, as the verse tells us, to see the ‘invisible me’, to hear the ‘tumult in a silent zone.’ The second metaphor is close to George Eliot’s ‘roar which lies on the other side of silence’, suggesting the rationale for the novel’s title, ‘The other side of the rainbow’. To say what cannot be said with the words that the polite society has handed to us and to peek into the abyss is the forte of three categories of truth tellers — the fictionist, the philosopher and the psychologist. But to do these two seemingly impossible tasks of speaking and looking against the grain while not abandoning the grain itself, is the province and forte of the fictionist alone. It involves the writer in fracturing syntax, in forcing words beyond and against their conventional meanings. Nayak doesn’t fracture syntax, but he does the latter in ample measure through his resort to paradox, oxymoron and conundrum. For Arun, beginning and end merge. For Rajiv, destination is not destiny. ‘Life’, said Bertrand Russell, ‘is an uneasy awakening between two sleeps.’ Arun and Rajiv, the two protagonists of Nayak’s tale and those of us who are among their auditors, would tend to agree. They themselves speak in paradoxes and conundrums. Arun and Rajiv are ordinary students who become friends during their four-year residence at Ravenshaw College. One of them – Arun, the son of a ‘pakodawala’ — comes of a dirt-poor family and the other – Rajiv – just a notch above, namely a lower middle class family. Though they share a bond, they seem headed in different, almost opposite, directions. This is thanks as much to their differing social backgrounds as to their different psychological orientations. Arun wants to flee his fatherless and shelter home-ridden past, good grades in examination his only vehicle. Rajiv wants to flee a father-dominated oppressive present, with alcohol as his prop. Arun is mother-fixated and Rajiv is caught in a bitter oedipal struggle. The fact of Arun being intellectually gifted and Rajiv being lackadaisical goes into the mix as well, making them the perfect unlike poles that attract rather than repel. The excruciating tale that the novel tells takes shape from the sweetness of their intertwined lives and the bitterness of their interrupted friendship, with two potentially romantic entanglements — Arun’s with Ruby and Rajiv’s with Saswati, threatening to derail it. Arun’s unrequited feelings for Ruby, a girl his social superior, complicates their friendship, bringing into it a deficit of trust and openness. Rajiv’s words capture the fraught relations quite well: ‘We were three hands of a queer structure that looked like a triangle that didn’t have any corner or meeting point’ (p. 173). Rajiv too cannot bring himself to love Saswati. It takes its toll on both, but more cruelly on Arun. It is painful to read the climax revealingly given the name: ‘A Tree Sheds Its Leaf.’ Does the setting of Ravenshaw College play a part in this sad human drama? Or is it only a mute backcloth? Nayak is clearly not writing a novel to document Ravewnshaw College. But his novel darkly hints at how the lives of its young population are warped by academic competitiveness and snobbery related to status. Arun’s breakdown is ultimately caused by his dark and brooding disposition. But it is exacerbated by family expectations and an uncaring environment, making for a potentially tragic tale. Rajiv survives to not only tell the story of wasted opportunities, broken dreams and shattered hopes but also to give his life some closure by revisiting Arun’s village after thirty years. His chance meeting with Saswati also helps him to heal. Thus a melancholic and disturbing tale is turned into a redemptive one of losing and finding. The novel is a gripping read. (Himansu S.
