magic ace wild lock demo BEIRUT (AP) — Syria's de facto leader said Sunday it could take up to four years to hold elections in Syria, and that he plans to dissolve his Islamist group that led the country's insurgency at an anticipated national dialogue summit for the country. Ahmad al-Sharaa, who leads Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the group leading the new authority in Syria, made the remarks in an interview with Saudi television network Al-Arabiyya. It comes almost a month after a lightning insurgency led by HTS overthrew President Bashar Assad's decades-long rule, ending the country's uprising-turned civil war that started back in 2011. Al-Sharaa said it would take time to hold elections because of the need for Syria's different forces to hold political dialogue and rewrite the country's constitution following five decades of the Assad dynasty's dictatorial rule. Also, the war-torn country's battered infrastructure needs to be reconstructed, he said. “The chance we have today doesn’t come every 5 or 10 years,” said al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani. “We want the constitution to last for the longest time possible.” Al-Sharaa is Syria's de facto leader until March 1, when Syria's different factions are set to hold a political dialogue to determine the country's political future and establish a transitional government that brings the divided country together. There, he said, HTS will dissolve after years of being the country's most dominant rebel group that held a strategic enclave in the country's northwest. Earlier, an Israeli airstrike in the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday killed 11 people, according to a war monitor, as Israel continues to target Syrian weapons and military infrastructure even after the ouster of Assad. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the airstrike targeted a weapons depot that belonged to Assad’s forces near the industrial town of Adra, northeast of the capital. The observatory said at least 11 people, mostly civilians, were killed. The Israeli military did not comment on the airstrike Sunday. Israel, which has launched hundreds of airstrikes over Syria since the country's uprising turned-civil war broke out in 2011, rarely acknowledges them. It says its targets are Iran-backed groups that backed Assad. Unlike his criticism of key Assad ally Iran, al-Sharaa hoped to maintain “strategic relations” with Russia, whose air force played a critical role in keeping Assad in power for over a decade during the conflict. Moscow has a strategic airbase in Syria. The HTS leader also said negotiations are ongoing with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in northeastern Syria, and hopes that their armed forces will integrate with the Syrian security agencies. The Kurdish-led group is Washington’s key ally in Syria, where it is heavily involved in targeting sleeper cells belonging to the extremist Islamic State group. Turkish-backed Syrian rebels have been clashing with the SDF even after the insurgency, taking the key city of Manbij, as Ankara hopes to create a buffer zone near its border in northern Syria. The rebels attacked near the strategic northern border town of Kobani, while the SDF shared a video of a rocket attack that destroyed what it said was a radar system south of the city of Manbij. In other developments: — Syrian state-run media said a mass grave was found near the third largest city of Homs. SANA said civil defense workers were sent to to the site in al-Kabo, one of many suspected mass graves where tens of thousands of Syrians are believed to have been buried during a brutal crackdown under Assad and his network of security agencies. — An Egyptian activist wanted by Cairo on charges of incitement to violence and terrorism, Abdulrahman al-Qardawi, was detained by Lebanese security forces after crossing the porous border from Syria, according to two judicial and one security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to to talk to the press. Al-Qardawi is an Egyptian activist residing in Turkey and an outspoken critic of Egypt's government. He had reportedly visited Syria to join celebrations after Assad's downfall. His late father, Youssef al-Qaradawi, was a top and controversial Egyptian cleric revered by the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. He had lived in exile in Qatar for decades. — Lebanese security forces apprehended an armed group in the northern city of Tripoli that kidnapped a group of 26 Syrians who were recently smuggled into Lebanon, two Lebanese security officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share the information with the media. The Syrians included five women and seven children, and security officials are working to return them to Syria. Kareem Chehayeb, The Associated Press

Gaya: Gaya senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ashish Bharti has asked the officials concerned to ensure heightened surveillance of hotels and private houses in Bodh Gaya following a bomb threat to the Mahabodhi Mahavihara. Conducting a security review on Friday, the SSP instructed security personnel to improve mobile patrolling and quick response teams’ efficiency. He also called for regular mock drills, repair and updating of CCTV cameras and ensuring emergency response teams are fully equipped and alert. The company signed a non-binding agreement with the US Commerce Department and could receive up to $225 million in funding. Lest you think Amazon’s gruff crime solver somehow got a piece of the action, Bosch is also a German multinational corporation that makes... just about everything under the sun. (That even includes a stink-removal machine !) The company recently accelerated its silicon development, buying TSI Semiconductors in 2023 and finalizing the deal early this year. But instead of focusing on cutting-edge silicon for computers, phones and AI, Bosch specializes in chips for the auto industry. The company plans to use the funds on the Roseville, CA facility it acquired in the TSI deal. The company will invest up to $1.9 billion to convert the plant into one that spits out silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors, which are used to boost the efficiency of EV driving and charging. Bosch expects the first 200mm wafers to come off the line there in 2026. “The Roseville investment enables Bosch to locally produce silicon carbide semiconductors, supporting US consumers on the path to electrification,” Paul Thomas, president of Bosch in North America and Bosch Mobility Americas, wrote in a statement. In addition to boosting America’s primacy in the chip industry, the CHIPS Act’s other goal is job creation. The White House says the proposed funding would create up to 1,700 jobs, including 1,000 in construction and 700 in manufacturing, engineering and R&D. “Today’s agreement catalyzes nearly $2 billion of private investment and the creation of over 1,700 jobs, while investing in a critical technology relied upon on by our defense and auto industry,” wrote Natalie Quillian, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff. In November, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s leading advanced chip maker, was the first to have its CHIPS Act grants (to the tune of $6.6 billion) finalized. Other recipients include Intel (although its funding was recently cut ), HP , Samsung , GlobalFoundries , Texas Instruments and Rocket Lab .

Pep Guardiola claims three-quarters of the Premier League want to see Manchester City relegated over financial irregularities. But the City boss has vowed to stay on and lift the club back to the top even if they are sent all the way down to the National League. Guardiola ended speculation over his immediate future this week by extending his contract, which had been due to expire at the end of the season, through to the summer of 2027. That has given the club some stability at a time of great uncertainty as they fight 115 charges related to alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations. City have denied all wrongdoing but their punishment if found guilty could be severe, with demotion even a possibility. Guardiola has strongly defended the club in the past and is happy to continue doing so. The Spaniard said: “I don’t enjoy it, I prefer not to be in that position, but once it’s there I love it because, when you believe in your club, and the people there – I believe what they say to me and the reasons why. “I cannot say yet because we’re awaiting the sentence in February or March – I don’t know when – but at the same time, I like it. “I read something about the situation and how you need to be relegated immediately. Seventy-five per cent of the clubs want it, because I know what they do behind the scenes and this sort of stuff. “I said when all the clubs accused us of doing something wrong, (and people asked) what happens if we are relegated, (I said) I will be here. “Next year, I don’t know the position of the Conference they are going to (put) us, (but) we are going to come up and come up and come back to the Premier League. I knew it then and I feel it now.” The immediate priority for Guardiola, who said his contract negotiations were completed in “just two hours”, is to arrest a run of four successive defeats in all competitions. Yet, ahead of their return to action against Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, the champions continue to grapple with a lengthy injury list. Mateo Kovacic is their latest casualty after sustaining a knock on international duty that could keep him out for up to a month. On the positive side, defenders Nathan Ake, John Stones and Manuel Akanji could feature and Jack Grealish is also closing in on a return after a month out. Much to Guardiola’s frustration, Grealish was called up by England for their recent Nations League games, although he later withdrew. Guardiola said: “I want the best for Jack and I want the best for Jack with the national team but the doctor said to me that he was not ready to play. “I know (England) want him but they have 200 players to select from and Jack was not fit. He had to recover from many things.” Kyle Walker played for England against both Greece and the Republic of Ireland despite limited game time since suffering injury in the October international break. Guardiola said: “If he is fit I like him to play in the national team. It is not a problem, don’t misunderstand me. “Kyle has a dream to make 100 caps for the national team. Do I want to cancel this dream? Absolutely not. “But if you are not fit, if you cannot play here, you cannot play for the national team. It is quite obvious.”F.P. Report ISLAMABAD: The National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta) Saturday issued a threat alert warning of potential terrorist activity by Fitna-ul-Khawarij during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest scheduled for November 24. According to the alert, there are credible reports of terrorists linked to Fitna-ul-Khawarij crossing the Pakistan-Afghanistan border between the nights of November 19 and 20. These operatives are believed to have entered various major cities within Pakistan and could potentially carry out attacks at any time. Sources revealed that Nacta formally communicated these concerns to key authorities, including the Chief Commissioner Islamabad, the Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs), and the Chief Secretaries of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K). In light of the threat, NACTA urged all relevant stakeholders to enhance security arrangements and adopt proactive measures to prevent any untoward incidents during the protest. The alert stressed the critical importance of more vigilance as political activities in the capital draw closer. On the other hand, as PTI prepares itself for its planned protest on Nov 24 (Sunday), authorities have implemented extensive security and transportation restrictions across major cities, causing significant disruption for residents and commuters. In the capital city Islamabad, security measures were enforced early in the morning, with all major entry and exit points of the city being sealed. All the roads leading to the capital city were shut off, particularly those from the neighbouring cities of Rawalpindi and other surrounding areas. Container blockades have been set up along key thoroughfares like Iran Avenue and Margalla Road to prevent access to crucial parts of the city, including Parliament House and the central business districts. The Expressway, a major route connecting Islamabad with Rawalpindi, and Zero Point were also closed as authorities braced themselves for the PTI protests. There will be no internet services in several parts of the city on Sunday. The government has also imposed Section 144 to prevent gatherings. We’re counting down our top 10 stories of the year as they were covered in the pages of the Herald-Zeitung: 6. Tragic crashes claim lives of NB youth By Erica Wilson | The Herald-Zeitung The New Braunfels community mourned the loss of two local youths this year who died in vehicle accidents. Layne Adams was an eighth-grader at Oak Run Middle School. He died in January after a utility task vehicle accident, and his death was felt across the New Braunfels community. “He was one of our eighth-grade athletes and one of the most popular kids in the class, from a great family — a wonderful family,” said New Braunfels ISD athletic director Jim Streety following the accident. Hundreds of parents and students gathered at Unicorn Stadium, dressed in Unicorn blue, to mourn the loss in a moment of public grief on Jan. 7. “That’s what New Braunfels is,” Streety said. “That’s what our school and our school district is. That’s part of who we are. There’s a lot of love throughout our community.” A few months later in April, a 16-year-old New Braunfels boy died in a crash near Garden Ridge in Comal County. The crash occurred on Farm to Market Road 3009, about half a mile south of the intersection with FM 1863, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. A 31-year-old San Antonio man was driving a 2023 Isuzu box truck north on FM 3009 about half a mile south of FM 1863. The 16-year old New Braunfels boy was driving a 2010 Toyota Sienna minivan southbound on FM 3009. The truck lost control after going too fast on a wet road, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety investigation report. The truck was driving “at an unsafe speed for the road/weather conditions” on the wet two-way road, according to the crash report. The truck “lost control and slid into the southbound lane of FM 3009,” striking the minivan. The 16-year-old minivan driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was treated at a hospital for serious injuries. 5. Growth sparks even more developments By Kaitlynn Hutchins | The Herald-Zeitung No. 5 on this year’s countdown is the plethora of neighborhood developments being built around Comal County. From groundbreaking on the Mayfair development off of I-35 in New Braunfels to approval of the 400-acre Canyon Ranch development in Spring Branch, the new communities and new developments being built kept popping up in the H-Z’s headlines. Growth in Veramendi has been underway for many years now, but this year, the Del Webb company broke ground on the active adult section of the development designed for homebuyers ages 55 and up. The Del Webb section will include amenities such as a fitness center, clubhouse and pool, as well as proximity to nearby medical complexes and other amenities throughout Veramendi. Del Webb is known for building active adult communities throughout the country, including the 4,750-acre Sun City Texas development in Georgetown. “Our vision for Del Webb Veramendi is to create more than just a place to live; it’s to cultivate a lifestyle that encourages wellness, connection, and enjoyment,” said Shawn Seaberg, division president at PulteGroup – San Antonio. “Whether you’re passionate about fitness, socializing, or simply enjoying nature, there’s something for everyone here. We offer more than a beautiful home; we offer a place to belong.” Down the road in an unincorporated portion of the county near Spring Branch, Comal County commissioners approved the first and second phases of the Canyon Ranch development. The development is situated on a plot of land totaling 400 acres, with the first phase offering 118 lots on 32 acres and the second phase offering 52 lots on 13 acres. Mayfair, a new community featuring homes, parks, a Canyon ISD middle and elementary school, a farmer’s market, retail space and more amenities, made several headlines this year. Paving of roads in the development has begun and the community held its inaugural Mayfest this year, a family-friendly event that included activities such as hot air balloon rides, a bier and wein garten and a petting zoo. “I think Mayfair is different than other communities, and we want to do things that are fun and we will have events throughout the year,” said Kristi Robinson, Southstar marketing and community relations director. “This will be our big festival that we’ll have annually, but we plan to have concerts, different activities, social clubs — everything.”

Bipartisan effort needed to resolve Muan disaster Published: 29 Dec. 2024, 19:51 A massive aviation disaster took place amid the national crisis from the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol and the following impeachment of Prime Minister and acting President Han Duck-soo. Most of the 181 passengers and crew aboard a Jeju Air plane returning from Bangkok died at around 9 a.m. after the plane caught on fire while landing at Muan International Airport, South Jeolla. The government must rescue any possible survivors, treat injured passengers and crew, and offer support for their families. It must also conduct safety checks with other passenger planes to prevent such tragedies at airports across the country. The crash was reportedly caused by a bird strike above the airport. After the plane lost one engine from the collision, the plane belly-landed and veered off the runway. During belly landings, airports usually spray a layer of fire suppression foam on the runway. But the Muan airport didn’t take such measure. We are deeply worried if the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters really can handle the disaster. If a large-scale accident takes place, the Minister of the Interior and Safety usually leads the headquarters. If an accident calls for bigger leadership, the prime minister takes up the role. However, as the prime minister was suspended from duties due to his impeachment last week, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok — who currently serves as acting prime minister and acting president — is required to play the role of the headquarters commander with the help from the interior minister as his deputy. But since the interior minister already resigned for his role in declaring emergency martial law, his deputy must help the finance minister. The seat of the police chief is also vacant since his impeachment by the legislature. But the finance minister must deal with tough economic challenges from unstable financial markets after the presidential impeachment. The value of the Korean won plummeted to nearly 1,500 won per dollar while the stock market dramatically plunged. On top of such urgent tasks, the finance minister must also deal with the unprecedented airplane crash. The opposition Democratic Party certainly played a big part in impeaching the president on Dec. 14 for his nonsensical declaration of martial law. But the majority party must not send the government into limbo further. The government and political parties must not deepen public concerns about security. Despite the ongoing impeachment procedure through the Constitutional Court, all stakeholders must be united in resolving the worst-ever aviation accident in Korea. We extend our deep condolences to the victims of the airplane crash and their bereaved families.
