The Executive Secretary/CEO, Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Barr Pius Akutah has said low adoption of modern technology in port operations is hindering operational efficiency and transparency. Speaking at the recent annual Seminar for Maritime Journalists in Lagos, organized by First Mediacon Network and Shippers’ Council; he disclosed that the NSC is tasked with promoting the digitalization of port processes, but challenges such as inadequate internet infrastructure, resistance to change among stakeholders, and a lack of skilled personnel in the tech field is hindering progress in this area. Akutah who was represented by Council’s Director, Special Duties, Mustapha Zubairu, noted that the absence of a port economic regulator from 2006-2014 when the private sector took over the operations of terminals had left the ports without a regulator, “And they all set their tariffs which determined their standard of service deliveries regardless of whether it meets the industry quality standard or not.” Akutah emphasized the need for a strong legal framework for the Council as it is the nation’s Port Economic Regulator. Speaking on political interference and bureaucracy, he said changes in government, shifting political priorities, and bureaucratic hurdles delays/disrupt the implementation of policies meant to improve port operation. The NSC CEO said Nigerian ports have poor infrastructure, including outdated cargo handling equipment, inadequate road networks, and insufficient storage facilities. Other challenges he listed include lack of coordination among stakeholders, high cost of doing business, port congestion and inefficiency, limited private sector participation, security and corruption issues. Akutah for said that NSC is an agency constantly in transition which has transited from being an agency primarily responsible for protecting the interest of shippers on matters relating to international trade transaction, to trade facilitator, through the promotion of the development of Inland Dry Ports (IDPs) and other cargo logistics across the 6 geo-economic zones in Nigeria, he recommended that passing the Port Economic Regulatory Agency bill, implementing Cargo Tracking Note, operating a National Single Window, implementing an Enterprise Management System, digital transformation and E-Commerce, Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), regional trade expansion, sustainability of the global shipping industry and Green Shipping will go a long way in solving the problems faced by the Council. “The tasks of correcting the service providers to comply with the standard rules have become an issue which NSC is still battling with up till now. “There is an urgent need for the passage of the Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill 2023 which seeks to repeal the Nigerian Shippers’ Council Act and establish a regulatory agency for the Nigerian ports. “The NSC’s ability to drive reforms and improve port operations is constrained by the broader infrastructural deficiencies within the port system. “Effective port regulation requires close coordination between the NSC, the NPA, customs, terminal operators, shipping companies, and other stakeholders. However, there is often a lack of synchronization among these entities, leading to inefficiencies, conflicting policies, and a fragmented regulatory environment. “Changes in government, shifting political priorities and bureaucratic hurdles delays/disrupt the implementation of policies meant to improve port operations. “High tariffs, port charges, and inefficiencies at the ports increase the cost of doing business in Nigeria. While the NSC is responsible for overseeing tariff structures and pricing, it faces the challenge of balancing the interests of port operators, shippers, and the government while trying to make the ports competitive. “Nigerian ports continue to struggle with congestion and inefficiency, despite efforts to streamline operations. “While the NSC has the mandate to regulate and foster private sector involvement, there remains limited participation from private investors due to regulatory uncertainty, inadequate infrastructure, and challenges related to port security and safety, Security and Corruption Issues. “Security challenges, including cargo theft, piracy, and general lawlessness, persist at Nigerian ports. These security risks negatively affect port operations and increase the cost of shipping. Additionally, corruption among port officials and stakeholders remains a problem, with illegal fees, bribery, and rent-seeking behavior complicating the NSC’s regulatory functions and undermining reforms,” Akutah said. CEO, First Medicaon Network Ltd/Facilitator, Sesan Onilemo, disclosed that the 2024 edition of the seminar was tailored to educate maritime journalists and stakeholders on the issues affecting NSC. “Currently, the rating of ease of doing business in the ports is low. “This year, we deliberately narrowed-down our focus to a topic that can offer a dual opportunity for maritime journalists and content owners to acquire knowledge about the emerging dispensation at the NSC, and also understand the apprehension of direct stakeholders about The Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill 2023, which is in the last stage of being enacted. “I appeal to other agencies and players in the Nigerian maritime industry to emulate the golden initiative of the NSC and join us to espouse capacity building for maritime journalists and content owners,” Onilemo said.
My love of movie scoundrels has been sorely tested this year. When I was young, I daydreamed of exotic heists, slick con artists and lovable crooks I’d seen on screen. For most of my moviegoing life, I’ve been a sucker for larceny done well. Most of us are, probably. But now it’s late 2024. Mood is wrong. In the real world, in America, it’s scoundrel time all the time. Maybe Charles Dickens was right. In “American Notes for General Circulation” (1842), the English literary superstar chronicled his travels and detected a widespread, peculiarly American “love of ‘smart’ dealing” across the land. In business and in politics, Dickens observed, slavish admiration of the con men among them “gilds over many a swindle and gross breach of trust.” And here we are. It’ll pass, this scoundrel reprieve of mine. In fact it just did. All it took was thinking about the conspicuous, roguish outlier on my best-of-2024 list: “Challengers.” It’s what this year needed and didn’t know it: a tricky story of lying, duplicitous weasels on and off the court. The best films this year showed me things I hadn’t seen, following familiar character dynamics into fresh territory. Some were more visually distinctive than others; all made eloquent cases for how, and where, their stories unfolded. “All We Imagine as Light,” recently at the Gene Siskel Film Center, works like a poem, or a sustained exhalation of breath, in its simply designed narrative of three Mumbai hospital workers. Fluid, subtly political, filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s achievement is very nearly perfect. So is cowriter-director RaMell Ross’ adaptation of the Colson Whitehead novel “The Nickel Boys,” arriving in Chicago-area theaters on Jan. 3, 2025. “Nickel Boys,” the film, loses the “the” in Whitehead’s title but gains an astonishingly realized visual perspective. If Ross never makes another movie, he’ll have an American masterpiece to his credit. The following top 10 movies of 2024 are in alphabetical order. Both a mosaic of urban ebb and flow, and a delicate revelation of character, director and writer Payal Kapadia’s Mumbai story is hypnotic, patient and in its more traditional story progression, a second feature every bit as good as Kapadia’s first, 2021’s “A Night of Knowing Nothing.” Mikey Madison gives one of the year’s funniest, saddest, truest performances as a Brooklyn exotic dancer who takes a shine to the gangly son of a Russian oligarch, and he to her. Their transactional courtship and dizzying Vegas marriage, followed by violently escalating complications, add up to filmmaker Sean Baker’s triumph, capped by an ending full of exquisite mysteries of the human heart. As played by Adrien Brody, the title character is a visionary architect and Hungarian Jewish emigre arriving in America in 1947 after the Holocaust. (That said, the title refers to more than one character.) His patron, and his nemesis, is the Philadelphia blueblood industrialist played by Guy Pearce. Director/co-writer Brady Corbet’s thrillingly ambitious epic, imperfect but loaded with rewarding risks, was shot mostly in widescreen VistaVision. Worth seeing on the biggest screen you can find. Opens in Chicago-area theaters on Jan. 10, 2025. Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor play games with each other, on the tennis court and in beds, while director Luca Guadagnino builds to a match-point climax that can’t possibly work, and doesn’t quite — but I saw the thing twice anyway. In Bucharest, production assistant Angela zigzags around the city interviewing people for her employer’s workplace safety video. If that sounds less than promising, even for a deadpan Romanian slice-of-life tragicomedy, go ahead and make the mistake of skipping this one. llinca Manolache is terrific as Angela. Like “Do Not Expect Too Much,” director Agnieszka Holland’s harrowing slice of recent history was a 2023 release, making it to Chicago in early 2024. Set along the densely forested Poland/Belarus border, this is a model of well-dramatized fiction honoring what refugees have always known: the fully justified, ever-present fear of the unknown. A quiet marvel of a feature debut from writer-director Annie Baker, this is a mother/daughter tale rich in ambiguities and wry humor, set in a lovely, slightly forlorn corner of rural Massachusetts. Julianne Nicholson, never better; Zoe Ziegler as young, hawk-eyed Lacy, equally memorable. I love this year’s nicest surprise. The premise: A teenager’s future 39-year-old self appears to her, magically, via a strong dose of mushrooms. The surprise: Writer-director Megan Park gradually deepens her scenario and sticks a powerfully emotional landing. Wonderful work from Aubrey Plaza, Maisy Stella, Maria Dizzia and everybody, really. From the horrific true story of a Florida reform school and its decades of abuse, neglect and enraging injustice toward its Black residents, novelist Colson Whitehead’s fictionalized novel makes a remarkable jump to the screen thanks to co-writer/director RaMell Ross’s feature debut. Cousins, not as close as they once were, reunite for a Holocaust heritage tour in Poland and their own search for their late grandmother’s childhood home. They’re the rootless Benji (Kieran Culkin) and tightly sprung David (Jesse Eisenberg, who wrote and directed). Small but very sure, this movie’s themes of genocidal trauma and Jewish legacy support the narrative every step of the way. Culkin is marvelous; so is the perpetually undervalued Eisenberg. I'm not expecting another 7,000% in the next seven years. However, over the long-term, I do believe that the company has significant to become a much larger and more profitable business. This online retailer of homewares and furniture has reasons. Temple & Webster estimates it had a market share of just over 0.5% of the Australian furniture and homewares market in FY19, and this has grown to 2.3% in FY24. Part of its success is that, by being online, it's able to offer a huge product range – more than 200,000 products, in fact. Many are shipped directly by suppliers, which means the ASX stock doesn't require the warehouse or inventory investment to facilitate those sales. This enables the business to have an asset-light model. Temple & Webster notes that its category is experiencing a once-in-a-generation shift from offline to online. According to the company, millennials and Generation Z are driving online channel adoption. The Australian level of online penetration for furniture and homewares is approximately 20%, noticeably lower than the United States, United Kingdom, and other higher-penetrated categories. If the company can simply maintain its market share of sales, then it should do well out of the migration. As it becomes larger, its customer offering can improve around its range, pricing, data and personalisation, content, service and delivery experience. Temple & Webster has already delivered a lot of revenue growth. In , it achieved $498 million which was 26% higher than the year before. Its revenue has grown at a of 34% since 2017. That's impressive, in my opinion. Depending on its growth rate, the company aims to reach at least $1 billion in annual sales between FY26 and FY28. Within that $1 billion target, it is targeting a market share of 4.2% (up from 2.3% in FY24). The company expects its market share to grow to 15%. Overall, its core furniture and homewares segment is aiming for at least $800 million of the $1 billion sales target. The ASX stock also has multiple 'growth plays'. One is its business-to-business offering, and the other is its home improvement segment called TheBuild, where it sells products like plumbing, kitchen appliances, sinks, curtains and blinds, tiles, heating and cooling, wallpaper, and so on. Management hopes this segment will contribute at least $200 million of the $1 billion sales target. I expect revenue to continue growing strongly to 2026 and beyond, but even more importantly, I believe profit margins can climb. This will enable the bottom line profit to climb significantly. As the business grows, its fixed costs as a percentage of revenue are expected to decrease. In FY24, fixed costs decreased to 11% of revenue, down from 12% in FY23. It has a target of 6% of revenue by 28%. Another margin-improving move by the company is utilising AI for product content generation, recommendations, and live chat. This has led to an improvement in conversion and a $4 million improvement in annualised cost of doing business (CODB) savings. Growing its level of orders from repeat customers is expected to help lower marketing costs of overall revenue. In FY24, the ASX stock achieved a business as usual (BAU) operating profit ( ) margin of 4.6%. It's aiming for a BAU EBITDA margin of at least 15% in the long term. If the company can deliver on its margin improvement goals, it'll become a pleasingly profitable business with much higher revenue, which could drive the Temple & Webster share price higher.
