UAE delegation included 28 SMEs that showcased their products & services based on advanced technology Abu Dhabi, 15 December 2024: A UAE delegation, led by Her Excellency Alia bint Abdullah Al Mazrouei, Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, participated in the ComeUp startup festival held in the Korean capital, Seoul, recently. The UAE’s participation in the forum was aimed at enhancing cooperation with Korea in the fields of entrepreneurship, SMEs, advanced technology and innovation, and exchanging experiences and policy frameworks in these fields. The UAE pavilion at the exhibition, set up by the Ministry of Economy, showcased 28 small and medium-sized companies who highlighted their products and services that harness latest technological solutions and AI, enabling them to attract investments that aid business growth. The pavilion actively engaged visitors and participants in presentations on the potential of the UAE’s entrepreneurial landscape and the opportunities and incentives it offers to SMEs. Her Excellency Alia Al Mazrouei emphasized that the UAE and the Republic of Korea share historical relations and a comprehensive strategic partnership in all fields, especially on trade and economy fronts. These relations are supported by the shared commitment of both leaderships to continually develop them. Her Excellency said in a speech during a session on the sidelines of the exhibition: “The SMEs sector is one of the key sectors in cooperation between the two friendly countries, especially since the two sides share a common vision for its continuous development. The UAE and Korea provide all enablers and opportunities needed for the growth and prosperity of SMEs in their markets.” Her Excellency added: “The UAE delegation’s participation in the exhibition this year represents an important milestone in our efforts to support the economic relations between the two countries in the field of entrepreneurship. It is also an ideal opportunity to open new global markets for the UAE’s SMEs and support them in promoting their projects to a large base of investors in Korea and many countries around the world. These efforts are of great significance since SMEs constitute 94% of the total companies operating in the UAE markets, and contribute 63.5% to our non-oil GDP.” “The Ministry of Economy is committed to providing all forms of support to Emirati entrepreneurs and creating a supportive environment for the growth of their businesses, enabling them to attract investments and promote their products and services in foreign markets. This is in line with the objectives of the National Agenda for Entrepreneurship and SMEs, which aims make the country a true entrepreneurial nation by 2031,” she added. Her Excellency Alia Al Mazrouei shed light on the initiatives under the UAE’s new entrepreneurship system, which aim to sustain the UAE’s leadership and competitiveness in this field and increase the rate of success for entrepreneurs from 30 percent to 50 percent by 2031. These initiatives include the “Riyada Fund,” which has allocated incentives totaling AED 300 million to encourage graduates to pursue entrepreneurship and foster an entrepreneurial mindset and culture among various communities in the country. It also includes the “Youth Entrepreneurship Council”, which empowers young entrepreneurs to keep pace with developments in the field and promotes the culture of self-employment among them. Her Excellency Alia Al Mazrouei urged Korean investors and entrepreneurs to capitalize on the UAE’s dynamic entrepreneurial environment and explore business and partnership opportunities available across various vital sectors. The forum featured a session focused on the UAE, titled “The UAE: Your First Gateway to Business and Investment.” It was attended by representatives of the Dubai Airport Freezone, Khalifa University Projects Company, the Emirates Development Bank, and Digitalstores.ae. The session highlighted the key aspects of the business and investment environment in the UAE, particularly the provision for 100 percent foreign ownership of companies, as well as the advantages of the free zones and their advanced infrastructure. Also emphasized was the UAE’s strategic location as a vital gateway connecting the East and West, making it an ideal destination for an array of economic activities. In addition, several UAE entrepreneurs delivered impressive presentations on their pioneering projects and products during various sessions and held meetings with investors and venture capitalists who participated in the exhibition. Furthermore, Her Excellency Alia Al Mazrouei attended the MoU signing between the UAE’s Digitalstores and Shukran Korea, aimed at enhancing the opportunities for the expansion of Korean companies to the UAE, particularly in the fields of storage and delivery. This agreement is expected to attract 27 diverse Korean brands – including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and ready-made clothing brands – to the UAE market by 2025. Her Excellency also attended the signing of an MoU between Remal IoT and Sungjin Techwin, which saw both parties agree to merge under the name Remal, reflecting a shared vision for the future. This is particularly significant as Sungjin Techwin, now known as “Remal Korea”, is an advanced facility for manufacturing and research and development, located in Daejeon, South Korea. This MoU will enhance cooperation in the fields of the Internet of Things, space, defence, and manufacturing by combining Emirati and Korean expertise to deliver world-class solutions and innovations. Several government and private sector entities were part of the UAE delegation, including the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development, the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Dubai Airport Freezone, the Creative City in Fujairah, the Emirates Development Bank, Dubai Silicon Oasis, the Sharjah Economic Development Department, Khalifa University, the Higher Colleges of Technology, the United Arab Emirates University, and the In5 incubator. ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani security forces launched an operation Tuesday night to disperse supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan who had gathered in the capital to demand his release from prison. The latest development came hours after thousands of Khan supporters, defying government warnings, broke through a barrier of shipping containers blocking off Islamabad and entered a high-security zone, where they clashed with security forces, facing tear gas shelling, mass detentions and gunfire. Tension has been high in Islamabad since Sunday when supporters of the former prime minister began a “long march” from the restive northwest to demand his release. Khan has been in a prison for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases that his party says are politically motivated. Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, led the protest, but she fled as police pushed back against demonstrators. Hundreds of Khan’s supporters are being arrested in the ongoing nighttime operation, and police are also seeking to arrest Bibi. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters that the Red Zone, which houses government buildings and embassies, and the surrounding areas have been cleared. Leaders from Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, have also fled the protest site. Earlier Tuesday, Pakistan’s army took control of D-Chowk, a large square in the Red Zone, where visiting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is staying. Since Monday, Naqvi had threatened that security forces would use live fire if protesters fired weapons at them. “We have now authorized the police to respond as necessary,” Naqvi said Tuesday while visiting the square. Before the operation began, protester Shahzor Ali said people had taken to the streets because Khan had called for them. “We will stay here until Khan joins us. He will decide what to do next,” Ali said. “If they fire bullets again, we will respond with bullets,” he said. Protester Fareeda Bibi, who is not related to Khan’s wife, said people have suffered greatly for the last two years. “We have really suffered for the last two years, whether it is economically, politically or socially. We have been ruined. I have not seen such a Pakistan in my life,” she said. Authorities have struggled to contain the protest-related violence. Six people, including four members of the security services, were killed when a vehicle rammed them on a street overnight into Tuesday. A police officer died in a separate incident. Dozens of Khan supporters beat a videographer covering the protest for The Associated Press and took his camera. He sustained head injuries and was treated in a hospital. By Tuesday afternoon, fresh waves of protesters made their way unopposed to their final destination in the Red Zone. Most demonstrators had the flag of Khan’s party around their shoulders or wore its tricolors on accessories. Naqvi said Khan’s party had rejected a government offer to rally on the outskirts of the city. Information Minister Atta Tarar warned there would be a severe government reaction to the violence. He said the government did not want Bushra Bibi to achieve her goal of freeing Khan. “She wants bodies falling to the ground. She wants bloodshed,” he said. The government says only the courts can order Khan’s release. He was ousted in 2022 through a no-confidence vote in Parliament. In a bid to foil the unrest, police have arrested more than 4,000 Khan supporters since Friday and suspended mobile and internet services in some parts of the country. Messaging platforms were also experiencing severe disruption in the capital. Khan’s party relies heavily on social media and uses messaging platforms such as WhatsApp to share information, including details of events. The X platform, which is banned in Pakistan, is no longer accessible, even with a VPN. Last Thursday, a court prohibited rallies in the capital and Naqvi said anyone violating the ban would be arrested. Travel between Islamabad and other cities has become nearly impossible because of shipping containers blocking the roads. All education institutions remain closed. Pakistan's Stock Exchange lost more than $1.7 billion Tuesday due to rising political tensions, according to economist Mohammed Sohail from Topline Securities. Associated Press writers Munir Ahmed in Islamabad and Asim Tanveer in Multan, Pakistan, contributed to this report.NEW YORK, Dec. 10, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Attorney Advertising -- Bronstein, Gewirtz & Grossman, LLC, a nationally recognized law firm, notifies investors that a class action lawsuit has been filed against Evolv Technologies Holdings, Inc. Myanmar delegation attends 20th ASEAN-PAC meetingSyria’s former president Bashar al-Assad is in Moscow with his family after Russia granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds, a Kremlin source told Russian news agencies on Sunday, and a deal has been done to ensure the safety of Russian military bases. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said earlier that Assad had left Syria and given orders for a peaceful transfer of power, after rebel fighters raced into Damascus unopposed on Sunday, ending nearly six decades of his family’s iron-fisted rule. “Syrian President Assad of Syria and members of his family have arrived in Moscow. Russia has granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds,” the privately-owned Interfax news agency and state media quoted the unnamed Kremlin source as saying. Must Read Syrian rebels topple President Assad, prime minister calls for free elections Interfax cited the same Kremlin source as saying Russia favoured a political solution to the crisis in Syria, where Moscow supported Assad during the long civil war. The source said negotiations should be resumed under the auspices of the United Nations. Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s ambassador to international organisations in Vienna, said on his Telegram messaging channel: “Breaking news! Bashar al-Assad and his family in Moscow. Russia does not betray friends in difficult situations.” Syrian opposition leaders had agreed to guarantee the safety of Russian military bases and diplomatic institutions in Syria, the source told news agencies. But some Russian war bloggers said the situation around the bases was extremely tense and the source did not say how long the security guarantee lasted. Moscow, a staunch backer of Assad whom it intervened to help in 2015 in its biggest Middle East foray since the Soviet collapse, is scrambling to salvage its position. Its geopolitical clout in the wider region and two strategically-important military bases in Syria are on the line. A deal to secure Russia’s Hmeimim air base in Syria’s Latakia province and its naval facility at Tartous on the coast would come as a relief to Moscow. The Tartous facility is Russia’s only Mediterranean repair and replenishment hub, and Moscow has used Syria as a staging post to fly its military contractors in and out of Africa. Losing Tartous would be a serious blow to Russia’s ability to project power in the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Africa, say Western military analysts. Military presence in doubt Influential Russian war blogger “Rybar,” who is close to the Russian Defence Ministry and has over 1.3 million followers on his Telegram channel, said the situation around the bases was a serious cause for concern whatever Moscow’s official line. “Russia’s military presence in the Middle East region hangs by a thread,” Rybar said. “What anyone decided in high offices is absolutely irrelevant on the ground,” he added, suggesting Russian forces at the bases had not taken the initiative to defend their positions in the absence of orders from Moscow. Russian warships had left Tartous and taken up position off the coast for security reasons, the Hmeimim airbase had effectively been cut off after rebels took control of a nearby town, Kurdish forces had started to block Russian facilities beyond the Euphrates, and Russian positions at an oil facility in Homs had been blocked, Rybar said. Reuters could not independently confirm Rybar’s assertions. Earlier on Sunday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two military facilities had been put on a state of high alert, but played down any immediate risk. “There is currently no serious threat to their security,” the ministry said as it announced Assad’s departure from office and from Syria. “As a result of negotiations between B. Assad and a number of participants in the armed conflict on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic, he decided to resign from the presidency and left the country, giving instructions for a peaceful transfer of power,” it added, saying Russia did not participate in those negotiations. The Foreign Ministry said Moscow was alarmed by events in Syria. “We urge all parties involved to refrain from the use of violence and to resolve all issues of governance through political means,” its statement said. “In that regard, the Russian Federation is in contact with all groups of the Syrian opposition.” – Rappler.com Must Read Syrian opposition leader calls for 18 month transition period before elections
The suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare's chief executive struggled with sheriff’s deputies and shouted in an angry outburst as he arrived at court to fight extradition to New York . Luigi Nicholas Mangione, 26, could be heard shouting words that included “insulting the intelligence of the American people” as he was bundled into a Pennsylvania court by a horde of deputies for the hearing. Mangione is contesting his extradition back to New York where he has been charged with murder over the shooting of Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. He was denied bail at the brief hearing. He has 14 days to challenge the bail decision. Prosecutors, meanwhile, have a month to seek a governor's warrant out of New York. Mangione, wearing an orange jumpsuit, mostly stared straight ahead during the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair, or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion, but was told to be quiet by his lawyer. Thomas Dickey, his defence lawyer, questioned whether the second-degree murder charge filed in New York might be eligible for bail under Pennsylvania law, but prosecutors raised concerns about both public safety and Mangione being a potential flight risk, and the judge denied it. Prosecutors on Tuesday were beginning to take steps to take Mangione back to New York to face the murder charge while new details emerged about his life and how he was captured. The Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland family was charged with murder hours after he was arrested in the killing of Mr Thompson, 50, who led the United States' largest medical insurance company. Mr Dickey had declined to comment before the hearing at the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg. Mangione is being held without bail in Pennsylvania on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors have charged him with five counts, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Mangione was likely motivated by his anger with what he called "parasitic" health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed, a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said. He wrote that the US has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while "our life expectancy" does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of his hand-written notes and social media posts. Mangione called "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski a "political revolutionary" and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, according to the police bulletin. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania - about 230 miles (370km) west of New York City - after a McDonald's customer recognised him and notified an employee, authorities said. Officers found him sitting at a back table, wearing a blue medical mask and looking at a laptop, according to a Pennsylvania police criminal complaint. He initially gave them a fake ID, but when an officer asked Mangione whether he had been to New York recently, he "became quiet and started to shake", the complaint says. When he pulled his mask down at officers' request, "we knew that was our guy," Officer Tyler Frye said. Images of Mangione released on Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald's while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and beanie. In another photo from a holding cell, he stood unsmiling with rumpled hair. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mangione was carrying a gun like the one used to kill Mr Thompson and the same fake ID the gunman had used to check into a New York hostel, along with a passport and other fraudulent IDs. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione also had a three-page, handwritten document that shows "some ill will toward corporate America". A law enforcement official who was not authorised to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said the document included a line in which Mangione claimed to have acted alone. "To the Feds, I'll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn't working with anyone," the document said, according to the official. It also had a line that said: "I do apologise for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming." Pennsylvania prosecutor Peter Weeks said in court that Mangione was found with a passport and 10,000 dollars (£7,839) in cash, 2,000 dollars of it in foreign currency. Mangione disputed the amount. Mr Thompson was killed on Wednesday as he walked alone to a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. Police quickly came to see the shooting as a targeted attack by a gunman who appeared to wait for Mr Thompson, came up behind him and fired a 9mm pistol. Investigators have said "delay," "deny" and "depose" were written on ammunition found near Mr Thompson's body. The words mimic "delay, deny, defend," a phrase used to criticise the insurance industry. From surveillance video, New York investigators determined the gunman quickly fled fled the city, likely by bus. A grandson of a wealthy, self-made real estate developer and philanthropist, Mangione is a cousin of a current Maryland state legislator. After his elite Baltimore prep school, he went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a spokesperson said. "Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi's arrest," Mangione's family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Nino Mangione. "We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved." From January to June 2022, Luigi Mangione lived at Surfbreak, a "co-living" space at the edge of Waikiki in Honolulu. Like other residents of the shared penthouse catering to remote workers, Mangione underwent a background check, said Josiah Ryan, a spokesperson for owner and founder RJ Martin. "Luigi was just widely considered to be a great guy. There were no complaints," Mr Ryan said. "There was no sign that might point to these alleged crimes they're saying he committed." At Surfbreak, Mr Martin learned Mangione had severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life, from surfing to romance, Ryan said. "He went surfing with RJ once but it didn't work out because of his back," Mr Ryan said, but noted that Mangione and Mr Martin often went together to a rock-climbing gym. Mangione left Surfbreak to get surgery on the mainland, Mr Ryan said, then later returned to Honolulu and rented an apartment. Mr Martin stopped hearing from Mangione six months to a year ago.AP Trending SummaryBrief at 4:17 p.m. ESTMinnesota firearms deer harvest remains above 2023 after third weekend, DNR says
Lewandowski scores his 100th Champions League goal. He is the 3rd player to reach the milestoneThe experience of getting a period is hardly thrilling, especially if it comes with bloating, cramps, and irritation. But PMS symptoms aside, one of the more exasperating (and sometimes embarrassing) parts of menstruation involves leaky underwear. Yet for generations, women just did their best, hoping their pads wouldn’t shift and tampons would hold under heavy flows. Those were the old days. Today, a new generation of women is saying, “Enough with this.” In an era of freedom, why should any woman be made to feel ashamed just because she menstruates? The answer, of course, is that she shouldn’t. And she shouldn’t have to deal with flow leaks, either, which is why Knix has become such a welcome innovator in the intimate apparel scene. The Knix story began in the early 2010s with the vision of entrepreneur Johanna Griffiths. Tired of an undergarment market that had flash but lacked comfort and practicality, she launched Knix. Although the company’s lineup of products includes bras, activewear, and swimwear, its leakproof underwear and lower-waste period solutions are the differentiators that have put Knix on the map. If you’ve never heard of leakproof panties, there’s a good reason: It’s a new concept. These aren’t just underwear that hugs every curve and ridge of the body, though. They’re also outfitted with a special liner designed to absorb up to about nine tampons’ worth of flow depending on the style. Plus, they feature a triple-layer technology that wicks away moisture, locks in liquid, and prevents leaking. From an efficiency perspective alone, Knix has the menstrual marketplace covered. What could be easier than slipping into leakproof underwear that has a built-in period “safety net”? However, Knix didn’t earn 40,000+ five-star reviews just because it's leakproof underwear worked. The brand has invested serious energy and commitment into doing everything possible to gain customers’ trust, including implementing several principles. 1. Knix undergarments are both functional and fashionable. Creating leakproof underwear is one thing. Making them look cute and feel great is another. Knix clearly understands that some prefer to have matching bras and panties when they can. For that reason, Knix makes it simple to mix and match all the garments it sells. Customers can pick the right shape, style, and fit for both their tops and bottoms. That way, they don’t have to compromise on quality to get style. It’s worth mentioning that Knix has focused on creating an extensive collection for every body type. And they use real bodies to showcase how their apparel actually looks on a typical human. In fact, Knix notes on its site that it was one of the first brands to bring honest-to-goodness real people into its images. 2. Knix has no time for period shaming. The days of making women feel at fault for their periods is over, and Knix is bringing menstruation out of the shadows. Obviously, its leakproof underwear is a great start. But the company is dedicated to pushing the conversation even more into the open. Take the company’s Sport Your PeriodTM initiative in partnership with former Olympian and advocate, Megan Rapinoe for example. Knix learned that 1 in 2 teens will skip sports or drop out all together because of their period. Periods in sport are still a taboo topic despite the fact that they are a reality for almost all menstruating athletes. Knix is paying athletes competing at the national or global level between July 18 and November 1, 2024, to share their experiences with their periods while competing. This initiative was created to open up the conversation about periods in sports. Because the more people talk about periods in sports, the more they normalize periods in sports, and the more they can keep teens playing the sports they love. 3. Knix is bringing Gen Alpha into the fold. To help the next generation move beyond the idea that they need to feel uncomfortable about their periods, Knix offers apparel for teens. Like the products meant for adults, Kt by Knix offers leakproof underwear, swimwear, activewear, and ‘Period Kits’ , focused on the needs and bodies of younger customers just beginning their menstrual journeys. The company’s positioning in the teen market is particularly revealing. Why? It shows just how passionately and authentically Griffiths and the rest of the leadership team believe in the business’s mission. Additionally, it makes room for teens (and their families and friends) to have important conversations around women’s wellness concerns. 4. Knix keeps raising the inclusivity bar. Knix doesn’t rest when it comes to seeking ways to show customers of all ages that they’re supported by the brand — including those whose relationship with their periods is ending. Specifically, Knix has unveiled a perimenopause collection for customers in their 40s, 50s, and beyond whose menstrual flows may be annoyingly uneven and unpredictable. It’s not enough to call this a novel campaign. It’s a completely different (and refreshing) way of acknowledging how menstruation affects every body differently. Plus, all of the Knix products aimed at customers experiencing the signs and symptoms of perimenopause have the same aesthetic appeal as the Knix signature line. In other words, Knix invites anyone who menstruates to feel sexy and confident every day of the month. The company is on a path to help in the menstrual and women’s health and beauty space. And it’s all because one woman said “no more” to a history of unnecessary period shame and discomfort.NoneExposing the Dark Art of Election Manipulation With ‘Kingmaker’
After living for 17 years in the US, Chintan Dagli observed two things about the city upon moving back to India—the missing reading culture in kids and inadequate sources of books for them. Vidhya Thakkar, book blogger & digital marketer | A parent of two young kids, he realised there was a limit to the number of books he could buy for children. Determined to resolve this, in 2021, he started the Library on Wheels Foundation, under which Gyan Library was launched—a colourful van that is filled with books for children, going around the city with pre-designated stops. “The goal is to promote reading, and we believe that reading is like the key to success academically, socially and personally. So if a kid is good at reading, then they will do good at everything else in the future,” shares Dagli, adding that the goal is to not just promote reading, but also to do so consistently. Unlike a one-off or occasional experience where kids take a book, read it, and are done, Dagli wants it to be a habit that they cultivate. The library has books for children of all ages up to teenage, and a small segment for adults as well. “We want to encourage parents to read too as that directly influences kids,” says the 38-year-old. “In Mumbai, there aren’t a lot of libraries, there are no good sources of books for children. Our goal is to give them access, make it easy and not charge any fees for reading,” explains Dagli, who has a full-time job with a tech giant. The colourful van, carrying around 2,000 books, visits 30 stops from Dahisar to Malad. On any given day, it visits five locations. Currently, there are 13,000 books in circulation. “The locations are pre-decided, so the children from that area will come to that particular spot on time,” he adds. Children can take up to four books, which they can keep for three weeks and then return them before borrowing more books. The books are bought locally, but a lot of the books are also donated by parents and others in the community. These books in the van are sorted by age group and scanned when borrowed so that information is updates on each borrowed book. The lights inside the van are solar-powered. “I wanted to automate as much as possible as that makes the process seamless. This data has helped us understand which genres of books and writers are more popular amongst the children,” he shares. Geronimo Stilton, Ruskin Bond, Sudha Murthy and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series are quite popular. “Gyan Library is doing a phenomenal job of cultivating the habit of reading amongst the younger ones, which in today’s tech-savvy generation is challenging. Chintan is enabling young minds to enter a fabulous world of stories and to provide a platform to pick books for free! I have seen the library in my neighbourhood and watching young ones huddling inside really makes my heart sing,” shares Vidhya Thakkar, book blogger and digital marketer.SAN DIEGO , Dec. 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Realty Income Corporation (Realty Income, NYSE: O), The Monthly Dividend Company ® , today announced it has declared an increase in the company's common stock monthly cash dividend to $0.2640 per share from $0.2635 per share. New Aquila DSP Delivers Cost, Power, and Scalability for 2 km to 20 km Connectivity, Extending Marvell Optical Interconnect Leadership SANTA CLARA, Calif. , Dec. 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Marvell Technology, Inc . (NASDAQ: MRVL), a leader in data infrastructure semiconductor solutions, today announced Marvell® Aquila , the industry's first coherent-lite DSP optimized for 1.6 Tbps coherent optical transceiver modules operating at O-band wavelengths. By combining advanced coherent modulation with scalable O-band optics, the Aquila DSP delivers a power and performance-optimized solution tailored for the emerging market for distributed campus data center interconnects spanning up to 20 km with high bandwidth and low latency. The industry is shifting from large-scale facilities to campus-based data centers due to power and space constraints. While PAM4 interconnects remain the standard for inside data center connections and coherent data center interconnect (DCI) interconnects address regional data center connectivity, both areas where Marvell is the industry leader, campus-based data centers require optimized interconnects spanning 2-20 km, driving the need for coherent-lite technology. Marvell, leveraging its unique expertise in both PAM4 and coherent DSPs, is leading this market transformation. Traditional coherent DSPs are optimized for C-band tunable optics, which lack the scalability needed for high-volume data center deployment. The new Aquila coherent-lite DSP introduces an innovative O-band coherent architecture that delivers cost efficiency, power savings, and scalability, enabling the next generation of campus-based data center connectivity. Indian police fire tear gas to halt farmers’ protest march
King scores 28, North Carolina Central downs Gardner-Webb 78-77
Embiid scores 31 in triumphant NBA return for 76ersBefore being elected as the first transgender woman to the US Congress, 34-year-old Sarah McBride said she expected hostility. A harsh national spotlight has fallen swiftly upon her. "They may try to misgender me, they may try to say the wrong name, they will do what we can predictably assume they might do," she told the TransLash podcast last month ahead of her resounding election victory on November 5. "They are going to do that to get a rise out of me and my job will be to not give them the response they want," the Democrat from Delaware explained. Ahead of her arrival in the House of Representatives on January 3, McBride was targeted by a resolution this week from a right-wing Republican colleague that would ban transgender women from women's toilets in the Capitol. "Just because a Congressman wants to wear a mini skirt doesn’t mean he can come into a women’s bathroom," South Carolina firebrand Nancy Mace wrote on social media as she led a highly personal campaign against McBride. House Speaker Mike Johnson, after initially seeking to buy time to debate the issue, came out in support of a ban, saying that all single-sex facilities would be "reserved for individuals of that biological sex." McBride -- who wears knee-length dresses, not miniskirts -- issued a statement saying that she said would respect the rules "even if I disagree with them." "I'm not here to fight about bathrooms," said the politician and activist, who transitioned as a 21-year-old and told her parents on Christmas Day 2011. Donald Trump repeatedly raised transgender issues in the closing stages of his presidential campaign, with aides noting how questions around trans identity struck a nerve with swing voters. Two of the biggest issues -- at the heart of ongoing "culture wars" between conservatives and progressives -- are whether transgender women should be allowed in women's toilets and be admitted in women's sport. Mocking transgender athletes and "woke ideology," Trump promised to get "transgender insanity the hell out of our schools, and we will keep men out of women’s sports." McBride has long been an advocate for trans rights and she helped campaign for a law banning gender discrimination in her home state of Delaware, during which she was publicly called a "freak" and the "devil incarnate". "Listening to that was demeaning and dehumanizing for my child," her mother Sally told The Washington Post in a 2018 profile. "I still have a hard time coping with that." Undeterred, McBride rode the blows and was elected as the first US transgender state senator in 2020. She has been open about her mental health struggles growing up as a boy named Tim and the personal tragedy that has marked her life since, writing a memoir called "Tomorrow Will Be Different" in 2018. "I remember as a child praying in my bed at night that I would wake up the next day and be a girl," she told a TED talk in 2016. She first gathered major public attention with an open letter while a student leader at American University in Washington that announced her transition. She went on to encounter President Joe Biden and his family, also Delaware natives, when she became active in grassroots politics there. After interning at the White House under President Barack Obama, she secured an invitation to speak at the 2016 Democratic Party convention. The White House was also the scene of her first encounter with her late husband, Andrew Cray, a transgender man and LGTBQ+ activist. They married two years later shortly before Cray died from cancer. Knowing the attention she is destined for in the US Congress, she says her aim is to be an effective congresswoman focused on everyday voter priorities such as housing and inflation. But she knows she will be constantly pushed to be a spokeswoman -- and defender -- of the trans community. "I can't do right by the trans community if I'm not being the best member of Congress that I can be for Delaware," she told TransLash. "It's the only way that people will see that trans people can be good doctors, can be good lawyers, good educators, good members of Congress. I can't be there to put out a press release and tweet every time someone says something." adp/bgs
For more than a decade, the United States has sought to keep out of Syria's political debacle, seeing no viable partner. Islamist rebels' toppling of strongman Bashar al-Assad has forced a change of tune -- and a debate over just what US interests are. Donald Trump, who returns to the White House in little more than a month, on the eve of Assad's fall called Syria "a mess" and stated in his plain-speaking style that the United States should not be involved. Joe Biden's administration, after putting Syria on the backburner in a turbulent region, has offered a tacit rebuttal by stating that clear US interests are at stake -- including preventing Syria from fragmenting and avoiding a resurgence of the Islamic State extremist group. Steven Cook, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump's and Biden's statements could be combined and "together they make a kind of decent policy." The United States needs to address real concerns about the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda but "as far as getting involved in arranging the politics of Syria, I think that no good can come from it," Cook said. Since the presidency of Barack Obama, the United States has walked a fine line on Syria that critics often derided as a non-policy. The United States questioned the legitimacy of Assad, demanding accountability for brutality in one of the 21st century's deadliest wars, but stopped short of prioritizing his departure due to suspicions about the main rebels. The Islamist movement Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has now led Assad's ouster, traces its roots to Syria's Al-Qaeda branch and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States. Since Obama's time, the United States instead has allied itself in Syria with a smaller fighting force of the Kurdish minority -- over strenuous objections of neighboring Turkey, which backs HTS -- with a narrow mission to counter the Islamic State group. Some 900 US troops remain in Syria. Assad fell in a lighting surprise offensive as his protector Russia is bogged down in its invasion of Ukraine and after Israel's military heavily degraded Assad's other key supporters -- Iran and Lebanese militia Hezbollah. Robert Ford, the last US ambassador to Syria, helped spearhead the terrorist designation of HTS in 2012 but said that the group since then has not attacked US or Western targets and has instead fought Al-Qaeda and Islamic State forces. Ford also pointed with hope to post-victory statements by rebel chief Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, including welcoming international monitoring of any chemical weapons that are discovered. "Can you imagine Osama bin Laden saying that?" said Ford, now a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute. "I'm not saying 'trust Jolani.' He's obviously authoritarian. He's obviously an Islamist who doesn't believe that Christians have an equal right to power as Muslims. But I sure as hell want to test him on some of these things," Ford said. He said that the United States should encourage HTS, as well as other Syrian actors, to reach out and reassure the country's diverse communities including Christians, Kurds and Alawites -- the sect of the secular-oriented Assad. Beyond that, Washington should take a back-seat and let Syrians sort out their future, he said. "We should learn from the experience in Iraq that trying to impose exiles on a population traumatized by a brutal dictatorship and war is not a recipe for success," Ford said. Outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday offered US recognition to a future government that is "credible, inclusive and non-sectarian." Trump in his first term, at the urging of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, abruptly said he would pull troops out of Syria. He backtracked after intense criticism at home and appeals from French President Emmanuel Macron, who pointed to the risk of Islamic State filling the vacuum. Trump has not indicated how he would change Syria policy this time. But he has shown no reluctance in the past to negotiate with foreign adversaries on the US blacklist, from Afghanistan's Taliban to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said there was no legal restriction on US contact with designated terrorists, although he indicated there was no direct dialogue with HTS. Natasha Hall, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Syria could face "devastating economic and humanitarian consequences" unless the United States reconsiders the terrorist designation of HTS, which impedes aid groups. "That said," she said, "if there isn't sort of an established framework for negotiations and good behavior now, before that designation is lifted, that could potentially also be a major mistake down the line for Syria's future." sct/sms
