The Franchise Council of Australia’s loss for the past financial year blew out by more than $1.2m, with the organisation also losing its chief executive after less than a year following complaints to the board. Chair Richard Thame, who himself has only been in the position since the resignation of previous chair Brendan Green in September, has written to members in recent days, calling for unity and saying the board will give more clarity on the organisation’s path to a sustainable footing at its annual general meeting to be held late on Thursday. The annual report for the organisation, which represents 425 franchise owners nationwide, shows its loss rocketed from $85,460 in FY23 to $1.35m in FY24. The financial report included a “going concern” statement from the organisation’s auditors, given its plunge from $667,871 in member equity to negative $683,169 over the course of the year, and negative cash flow of $444,938. The Council had only $170,683 in cash at the end of the most recent financial year. “The group’s ability to continue as a going concern is dependent upon its future profitability, continued financial support from the Australian Taxation Office, and the company raising new funds from the members, if required,’’ accounting firm DFK International said in its going concern statement. Jayson Westbury has taken over at the Franchise Council of Australia after the previous CEO left in April. Picture:Justin Lloyd. The preface to the financial report recognises the challenges faced by the organisation. “It is very clear that the FCA has faced some significant financial headwind during the financial year of 2024 and while the results do show a loss, it is important to report that direct and deep decisions have been made to arrest the loss and place the FCA on a strong footing for the future,’’ the report says. Mr Thame, in his letter to members, said mistakes had been made, and he wanted to address the “serious concerns raised regarding the performance of the organisation and our recent challenges’’. “The past year has been a difficult chapter for the FCA, marked by significant financial strain, decisions that did not meet member expectations, and the need to rebuild trust in our leadership,’’ he wrote. Mr Thame said the board is charged with recruiting a chief executive and to “provide the CEO with the space to implement agreed strategies, monitor their progress, and intervene when necessary. “In the case of our former CEO, the board approved an ambitious strategy designed to grow the FCA. “While some good progress was made, this strategy was not executed well and resulted in unacceptably high staff turnover and significant cost over-runs. “When it became apparent that the CEO’s approach was not delivering the desired outcomes, the board acted to end his tenure and took the necessary steps to reset the cost base of the organisation.’’ Former chief executive Matthew Monaghan was hired in May 2023, but left for “personal reasons” in April of this year. It was later revealed in media reports that he left after two complaints about him were made to the board. Mr Monaghan was one of five people who have led the organisation in a permanent or acting role since 2022. Mr Thame says in his letter that “The board acted on information that was available at the time’’. “With the benefit of hindsight, we acknowledge that the board could have acted sooner. “It is important to recognise that the board did have a legal and ethical obligation to follow a process of procedural fairness and took steps to thoroughly and independently investigate concerns raised by staff, members and suppliers.’’ Mr Thame’s letter says the over-run in the organisation's expenses in FY24 “largely relates to employment cost and includes redundancy, restructuring cost and the settlement of outstanding claims’’. “I am pleased to report that the financial position of the FCA has improved in the five months since the financial year end. More details will be provided at the upcoming AGM.’’ Mr Thame called for unity from members, and said the directors, who worked for free, took their responsibility very seriously. “We hear and respect the criticism from members and understand the calls for greater accountability and transparency. “I can assure you that each and every director on the board during the time these losses were incurred, as well as those on the current board, remain committed to restoring the FCA to a position of strength,’’ he said. The FCA appointed Jayson Westbury as its new chief executive in September. Four years ago Mr Westbury left a previous role as chief executive of the Australian Federation of Travel Agents after saying A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw “needs to be given a firm uppercut or a slap across the face, and I mean that virtually, of course. I wouldn’t want to invoke (sic) any violence on anyone.” Grimshaw and ACA had outed unscrupulous travel companies, including Flight Centre, which had hit travellers with large cancellation fees in the wake of coronavirus travel bans. A statement from AFTA at the time said Mr Westbury resigned because of his comments, which he recognised were “inappropriate and unacceptable in any circumstances”. “My comments relating to Ms Grimshaw involved a very poor choice of words. I apologise for that choice and accept the language used was completely inappropriate,” Mr Westbury said at the time. Mr Thame declined to comment further about the FCA’s turnaround plans before the Thursday AGM. OTTAWA — Incoming U.S. president Donald Trump is brushing off Ontario’s threat to restrict electricity exports in retaliation for sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods, as the province floats the idea of effectively barring sales of American alcohol. On Wednesday, Premier Doug Ford said Ontario is contemplating restricting electricity exports to Michigan, New York state and Minnesota if Trump follows through on a threat to impose a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada. “That’s OK if he that does that. That’s fine,” Trump told American network CNBC when asked Thursday about Ford’s remarks on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. “The United States is subsidizing Canada and we shouldn’t have to do that,” Trump added. “And we have a great relationship. I have so many friends in Canada, but we shouldn’t have to subsidize a country,” he said, claiming this amounts to more than US$100 billion annually in unspecified subsidies. Meanwhile, an official in the Ford government says it’s considering restricting the Liquor Control Board of Ontario from buying American-made alcohol. The province says the Crown agency is the largest purchaser of alcohol in the world. The province also says it could restrict exports of Canadian critical minerals required for electric-vehicle batteries, and bar American companies from provincial procurement. Ford doubled down Thursday on the idea of cutting off energy exports. The province says that in 2013, Ontario exported enough energy to power 1.5 million homes in those three states. “It’s a last resort,” Ford said. “We’re sending a message to the U.S. (that if) you come and attack Ontario, you attack livelihoods of people in Ontario and Canadians, we are going to use every tool in our tool box to defend Ontarians and Canadians. Let’s hope it never comes to that.” Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce said the province would rather have co-operation with the U.S., but has mechanisms to “end power sale into the U.S. market” the day Trump takes office on Jan. 20. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith ruled out following suit. “Under no circumstances will Alberta agree to cut off oil and gas exports,” she said. “Our approach is one of diplomacy, not threats.” Michael Sabia, president and CEO of Hydro-Québec, said “it’s not our current intention” to cut off Quebec’s exports to Massachusetts or New York state, but he conceded it might be possible. “Our intention is to respect those contracts, both because they’re legally binding, but also because it’s part of, in our view, a sound relationship with the United States,” he said. “It’s a questionable instrument to use in a trade conflict.” Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew would not directly say whether Manitoba would threaten to withhold hydroelectric exports. “We are preparing our list and starting to think through what those options should look like,” he said. “I’m not going to make specific news today about items that we’re looking at.” Kinew added that some premiers felt retaliatory measures wouldn’t work in a call Trudeau held Wednesday. Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey said “we have no interest in stopping” the export of energy to the U.S., adding that a trade war would hurt both countries. “We hope it is just bluster; we’re preparing as if it is not,” he said. Canada supplies more oil to the U.S. than any other country. About 60 per cent of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85 per cent of U.S. electricity imports as well. Canada sold $170 billion worth of energy products last year to the U.S. It also has 34 critical minerals and metals the Pentagon is eager for. Trump has threatened to impose a 25 per cent tax on all products entering the United States from Canada and Mexico unless they stem the flow of migrants and drugs. Canadian officials have said it is unfair to lump Canada in with Mexico. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. Canada since has promised more border security spending to address Trump’s border concerns. Ford said that will include more border and police officers, as well as drones and sniffer dogs. Dylan Robertson, The Canadian PressTrump Jr. didn’t like Kimberly Guilfoyle’s ‘style,’ family happy to see her go: reportsBrazil’s federal police last Thursday formally accused Mr Bolsonaro and 36 other people of attempting a coup. They sent their 884-page report to the Supreme Court, which lifted the seal. “The evidence collected throughout the investigation shows unequivocally that then-president Jair Messias Bolsonaro planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organisation aiming to launch a coup d’etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law, which did not take place due to reasons unrelated to his desire,” the document said. At another point, it says: “Bolsonaro had full awareness and active participation.” Mr Bolsonaro, who had repeatedly alleged without evidence that the country’s electronic voting system was prone to fraud, called a meeting in December 2022, during which he presented a draft decree to the commanders of the three divisions of the armed forces, according to the police report, signed by four investigators. The decree would have launched an investigation into suspicions of fraud and crimes related to the October 2022 vote, and suspended the powers of the nation’s electoral court. The navy’s commander stood ready to comply, but those from the army and air force objected to any plan that prevented Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s inauguration, the report said. Those refusals are why the plan did not go ahead, according to witnesses who spoke to investigators. Mr Bolsonaro never signed the decree to set the final stage of the alleged plan into action. Mr Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or awareness of any plot to keep him in power or oust his leftist rival and successor. “No one is going to do a coup with a reserve general and half a dozen other officers. What is being said is absurd. For my part, there has never been any discussion of a coup,” Mr Bolsonaro told journalists in the capital Brasilia on Monday. “If someone came to discuss a coup with me, I’d say, that’s fine, but the day after, how does the world view us?” he added. “The word ‘coup’ has never been in my dictionary.” The top court has passed the report on to prosecutor-general Paulo Gonet. He will decide whether to formally charge Mr Bolsonaro. Rodrigo Rios, a law professor at the PUC university in the city of Curitiba, said Mr Bolsonaro could face up to a minimum of 11 years in prison if convicted on all charges. “A woman involved in the January 8 attack on the Supreme Court received a 17-year prison sentence,” Mr Rios told the Associated Press, noting that the former president is more likely to receive 15 years or more if convicted. “Bolsonaro’s future looks dark.” Ahead of the 2022 election, Mr Bolsonaro repeatedly alleged that the election system, which does not use paper ballots, could be tampered with. The top electoral court later ruled that he had abused his power to cast unfounded doubt on the voting system, and ruled him ineligible for office until 2030. Still, he has maintained that he will stand as a candidate in the 2026 race. Since Mr Bolsonaro left office, he has been targeted by several investigations, all of which he has chalked up to political persecution. Federal police have accused him of smuggling diamond jewellery into Brazil without properly declaring them and directing a subordinate to falsify his and others’ Covid-19 vaccination statuses. Authorities are also investigating whether he incited the riot on January 8 2022 in which his followers ransacked the Supreme Court and presidential palace in Brasilia, seeking to prompt intervention by the army that would oust Mr Lula from power. Mr Bolsonaro had left for the United States days before Mr Lula’s inauguration on January 1 2023 and stayed there for three months, keeping a low profile. The police report unsealed on Tuesday alleges he was seeking to avoid possible imprisonment related to the coup plot, and also await the uprising that took place a week later.Man City stumble again while Arsenal and Bayern Munich earn dominant wins
The shocking broad-daylight shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4 was carried out with a homemade firearm that alleged shooter Luigi Mangione may have created with a 3D printer. The increasing use of such weapons, often called "ghost guns," has raised troubling new questions about the easy availability of homemade firearms and the challenges they pose to both public safety and the ability of law enforcement to solve crimes. How do ghost guns work? Ghost guns are "firearms that are privately assembled and untraceable," said NPR . Some are created more or less from scratch using 3D printers, and others are sold as partially assembled "kits" to individuals, to avoid assigning the weapon a traceable serial number. That's because the individual components of a gun "are not subject to any of the federal regulations that govern firearms sales," including background checks, said PBS News . The use of a ghost gun in Brian Thompson's killing was hardly a new development. Gun kits allowing people to build their own weapons by simply completing a few simple assembly steps at home have been around since the 1980s, and that is still how many people obtain their ghost guns. But the ease of creating homemade firearms increased dramatically with the rise of 3D printing in the 2010s. 3D printing is a "manufacturing process in which material is laid down, layer by layer, to form a three-dimensional object," said PC Mag . 3D printers, therefore, can use that process to "turn digital files containing three-dimensional data" into a variety of items. As costs have fallen over the past 20 years, 3D printing is "no longer a novelty technology," said Steve Lohr at The New Yorker . In fact, anyone can now buy a small 3D printer for under $200 online and use it to create everything from guns to food . And the "vast majority of people assembling a ghost gun are legally allowed to do so," said CBS Philadelphia . That means that this type of ghost gun is increasingly "falling into the hands of individuals who should not have access to them, including young people and violent extremists," said The Soufan Center . Why are they a problem? Guns manufactured in the U.S. or imported from abroad are "legally required to have serial numbers," which are the "critical piece of information that law enforcement agencies use to trace the gun from the manufacturer to the gun dealer to the original buyer," said The New York Times . Without the ability to trace firearms back to individuals, law enforcement is deprived of one of its most significant crime-solving tools at a time when ghost guns are proliferating. "Because of their untraceable nature, we can't say for certain how many ghost guns are in circulation," said the Federation of American Scientists . But between 2017 and 2021, there was a "roughly tenfold increase in the number of ghost guns submitted to the ATF by law enforcement agencies for tracing," said CBS News . The explosion of ghost guns used in crimes is a problem the Biden administration tried to address in 2022 with a new rule that made it "illegal for businesses to manufacture gun kits without a serial number and for a licensed gun dealer to sell them without a background check," said The Associated Press . Since the Biden administration's rule was enacted, "those trends have reversed" and recoveries of ghost guns have dropped in many major cities and states, said The Trace . In October, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case challenging the Biden administration's ghost gun regulations. The court "appeared ready to uphold" the rule, said SCOTUSblog , and a ruling is expected sometime in 2025. Ghost guns were not part of the Trump campaign's gun policy agenda , and it is not clear whether the incoming administration will uphold or rescind Biden's rule. But the "growing availability of 3D-printed guns represents a whole new threat" that the Biden administration's rules didn't address, said the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.Washington: The common murre, a large black-and-white seabird native to northern waters, has become far less common in Alaska over the past decade due to the impacts of climate change. A study published on Thursday in Science reveals that a record-breaking marine heat wave in the northeast Pacific from 2014 to 2016 triggered a catastrophic population collapse, wiping out four million birds -- about half the species in the region. Strikingly, they have shown little signs of rebounding, suggesting long-term shifts in the food web that have locked the ecosystem into a troubling new equilibrium. "There's a lot of talk about declines of species that are tied to changes in temperature, but in this case, it was not a long term result," lead author Heather Renner of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge told AFP. "To our knowledge, this is the largest mortality event of any wildlife species reported during the modern era," she and her colleagues emphasized in their paper. The finding triggers "alarm bells," Renner said in an interview, as human-caused climate change makes heat waves more frequent, intense, and longer-lasting. With their dapper, tuxedoed look, common murres are sometimes called the "penguins of the north." Their slender wings power them across vast distances in search of food and make them expert divers. But even these hardy seabirds were no match for an unprecedented environmental catastrophe. The largest marine heat wave ever recorded began in the late fall of 2014, spanning a massive swath of the northeast Pacific Ocean from California to Alaska. It persisted for over two years, leaving devastation in its wake. During this time, some 62,000 emaciated murres washed ashore along the North American Pacific coastline -- dead or dying from starvation. Experts point to two key reasons for the bird deaths: elevated ocean temperatures reduced both the quality and quantity of phytoplankton, impacting fish like herring, sardines, and anchovies -- the mainstay of the murre diet. At the same time, warmer waters increased the energy demands of larger fish, such as salmon and Pacific cod, which compete with murres for the same prey. "We knew then it was a big deal, but unfortunately, we couldn't really quantify the effects," explained Renner. For years after the event, breeding colonies failed to produce chicks, complicating efforts to assess the full impact. Earlier estimates pegged the number of deaths at around a million, but a more robust analysis -- drawing on data from 13 murre colonies -- revealed the toll was four times higher. "It is just so much worse than we thought it was," Renner said of the new findings. The marine heat wave didn't just impact common murres. Pacific cod stocks collapsed, king salmon populations dwindled, and as many as 7,000 humpback whales perished. Yet the crisis created an uneven playing field: some species emerged unscathed, while others even thrived. Thick-billed murres, which often share nesting cliffs with common murres, were largely unaffected, possibly due to their more adaptable diet, Renner noted. For common murres, however, the fallout lingers. Despite nearly a decade since the heat wave, their numbers show no sign of bouncing back -- and the losses may well be permanent. Part of the reason lies in the long-term decline of some of their prey. Another factor is murres' survival strategy relies on numbers: they aggregate in massive colonies to protect their eggs from opportunistic predators like eagles and gulls. With their populations slashed, these birds have lost their critical safety buffer. Still, Renner offered a glimmer of hope. While addressing global warming is essential for curbing long-term climate change, conservation efforts can make a difference in the short term, she said. Removing invasive species like foxes and rats from murre nesting islands could also provide the beleaguered birds with a fighting chance.
