Donald Trump has made it clear he will not tolerate the Mexican practice of enticing American factories to just within the Mexican border, having disemployed their American employees, and then giving the American firms a tax holiday in Mexico, cheap Mexican labour to fatten their profits, and the ability to exploit existing free trade arrangements by exporting back into the U.S. both goods the Americans previously manufactured for themselves and the unemployment created in the U.S. by the relocation of the factories. It is clearly not Canada’s place to comment directly on these matters, but Canada is informally in considerable sympathy with the American position, and does not wish to run any risk of being confused with Mexico by the United States in terms of its trade methods and objectives. The U.S.-Mexico relationship is complicated by the open southern border that has been maintained over the past few years, and the effective partnership between the Mexican government and perhaps the nastiest criminal gangs in the world who effectively govern some of the northern Mexican provinces and conduct a massive slave-and-drug-importing business into the United States. The returning President Trump has made it clear that he will not tolerate any of this, that he will close the border, and that he will not hesitate to use the U.S. armed forces to protect the integrity of the country. To the extent that this is a justified concern, our first priority should be—for our sake as well as that of the United States—as careful as reasonably possible about newcomers to this country from overseas. At this point, there’s no reason to be concerned that the United States is trying to keep law-abiding Canadians, who as a group spend billions of dollars in the United States every year, out of that country. Anti-terrorist screening is something Canada should be doing without being prompted by a change of government in Washington. All of this constitutes the transition in the economic ambience of this continent north of the Rio Grande River from night to day. Economics is essentially Grade 3 arithmetic and psychology, and the economic psychology that will be generated by the pro-growth Trump administration will roll over into Canada with greater demand for Canadian goods and resources. If we combine this, following our next election, with policies to encourage responsible development and export of resources and encourage a reversal in our present capital outflows and welcome foreign capital and retention of domestically generated income, we will be entering into the greatest period of economic growth in our modern history. Neither Donald Trump nor any other American president since the War of 1812 has had any reason to consider Canada anything but a friendly and compatible neighbour. We have our differences with the United States from time to time, but when that country prospers, as it is about to, we benefit also. There has also been some discussion about raising Canada’s contribution to military expenses to 2 percent of GDP as we have pledged to do. Defence is the most stimulative of all spending categories as it is heavily concentrated in high-technology areas, and an increase in military personnel exposes that section of the workforce to the most effective place for adult education. It is also entirely complementary to the long-forsaken task of building Canada’s influence in the world. The world respects military and economic power, not the appeasement of underdeveloped despotisms or attempts to be loved by the denizens of the sinkhole of pretension and national failure that is now the United Nations. A Trump administration will be a good thing for Canada, not least because we will once again have determined leadership of the Western Alliance.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Right when the Los Angeles Rams’ offense has dropped into a disconcerting slump, their defense has held three straight opponents under 10 points for the first time in decades. Although the Rams (10-6) are closing in on an NFC West title and another playoff berth with a five-game winning streak, the way they’re doing it makes their postseason prospects quite unpredictable. The methodology has been strange, but the results are not: After holding off Arizona 13-9 on Saturday night, Los Angeles has won nine of 11 and is very close to claiming its fourth division title and sixth playoff berth in coach Sean McVay’s eight seasons. “I’m proud of this group and the way they battled back,” Matthew Stafford said. “A lot of people doubted us, and a lot of people wrote us off at 1-4. To be able to sit here with our record what it is right now, I feel proud of this group.” The Rams hadn’t held three straight opponents to single-digit scoring since 1975, but rookie coordinator Chris Shula’s defense has done it with a strong front and a little luck on the back end, including the last-minute interception by Ahkello Witherspoon on a pass that deflected off star Arizona tight end Trey McBride’s head at the goal line. If they do that, then I know that it’s not as far as sometimes it can feel like. But ultimately, we’ve got to do it.” What’s working The young front four remains the strength of the defense. Jared Verse had a tremendous game on the edge against Murray and Arizona’s running game, while fellow rookie Braden Fiske and second-year pros Kobie Turner and Byron Young all recorded sacks. What needs help The Rams again failed to establish the running game despite never trailing Arizona. Kyren Williams got his second-fewest carries of the season (13, with just five in the second half), while rookie Blake Corum was barely involved. Los Angeles’ 3.9 yards per rush is the second-lowest mark in the NFL even though Williams began Sunday third in the league with 1,299 yards. MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Bucks owe much of their turnaround from a dreadful start to the way Giannis Antetokounmpo has raised his extraordinary game to an even higher level. He has three triple-doubles in the last six games he has played. “He’s been amazing because he’s scoring, but more importantly, he’s getting everybody involved,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said after the Bucks’ over the Washington Wizards on Saturday night. “It’s so difficult to help off a passer that can score. There’s a lot of guys in this league who can score, (but) they ain’t passing. You can go trap them. You can kind of junk up the game. But the way Giannis is passing, you’ve got to pick your poison.” Antetokounmpo had 42 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists Saturday for the highest-scoring triple-double of his career while helping the Bucks win their sixth straight. After losing eight of their first 10 games this season, the Bucks have won eight of nine to get above .500 at 10-9 for the first time since in their season opener. The Bucks’ progress was evident Saturday in how they found a way to win on a night when they weren’t particularly sharp. “If this was the third game or fourth game of the season, we probably would have lost that game,” Antetokounmpo said. “Now we just know — no matter if it looks pretty, if we’re playing well — we’ve got to figure out ways to win the game.” Antetokounmpo has been figuring out plenty of ways to help his team lately. His 42-point performance Saturday improved his season scoring average to an NBA-leading 32.9 points. He also has 11.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. He’s just doing a lot of stuff for us, and he’s doing it in the flow. He said afterward that it took a while for him to get back into a rhythm, but he noted the time off helped him in other ways. “I felt powerful because obviously I took two or three days after the Miami game to lift some weights, get my legs under me,” Antetokounmpo said. “So I felt powerful. Every move was powerful out there.” That power helped Antetokounmpo produce his 48th career triple-double, and eighth with at least 35 points. The Bucks noted after the game that Antetokounmpo matched the number of triple-doubles with 35 points that Michael Jordan accumulated in his career. If you answered yes to either question, you’ll be excited to learn that what’s being called the first-ever dog-friendly cruise is being planned aboard Margaritaville at Sea’s Islander out of the Port of Tampa in November 2025. And business opportunities await. Cruise ships famously don’t allow dogs other than service animals. Organizers of this cruise anticipate selecting from a long line of hopefuls. A “waitlist for all dog parents who have dreamt of bringing their furry friends along for their vacations will open soon,” a news release says. Organizers are calling for 250 dogs, “their owners and their closest humans” to become “inaugural ambassadors” for the cruise, which they promise will offer “unique experiences and activities including gifts and samples from top vendors, dog shows and trainings, guest speakers, costume contests, parades, and more.” The event is being staged by two organizations — Cruise Tails and Expedia Cruises of West Orlando. The website cruisetails.com seeks sponsors and investors in hopes of turning the cruise into a recurring event. Sponsorship and partnership opportunities are available for companies seeking brand visibility “across a passionate pet-loving audience,” the site says. And participants must sign photo waivers, the website says, adding, “We anticipate the fun will be all over social media and even in the press. In fact, the 250 chosen will undoubtedly be asked by sponsors to try products and post about them.” Cruise Tails was formed by Steve Matzke, a Bradenton-based entrepreneur listed on LinkedIn as beginning his career this month as an “independent consultant.” Matzke spent four years prior to that as senior director of external relations for the American Accounting Association, and 12 years before that as director of faculty and university initiatives for the American Institute of CPAs, his LinkedIn profile shows. Expedia Cruises of West Orlando was founded in 2019 by Dawn von Graff, an avid traveler who has taken more than 75 cruises and visited more than 80 countries, and her husband. She owned a computer networking firm, worked as an international tour manager, and was a top salesperson for Marriott before forming Expedia Cruises of West Orlando as a full-service travel agency. Details including dates, prices and itineraries have not yet been released. According to the website, organizers hope to select the inaugural 250 dogs based partly on how the dogs perform in a “video talent singing contest” as well as “a variety of criteria” to be announced “over the next few weeks.” The bigger the dog’s entourage, the better chance it will have to be chosen, the website says. “Preference will be given to dogs in a group which includes one dog cabin traveling with two or more associated cabins of friends or family without dogs,” it says. A spokeswoman for Margaritaville at Sea says the organizers are chartering the Islander, and the cruise will not be available for booking to the general public. Each dog will have “private relief stations” on their cabin balconies, and when dogs don’t make it to the relief station, each will have its own “pet butler” to ensure “their cabin and the boat remain in top condition,” a Cruise Tails spokeswoman said. Participants must agree to follow protocols on board, including keeping their dogs in permitted areas and making sure they are up to date with appropriate vaccinations. Dogs will not be allowed in dining areas, the ship’s casino, pool decks, lounges or music venues, according to the news release. Organizers will also be looking for workers and vendors. “We’re going to need dog walkers, pet butlers, and so much more,” the website says. And “if you have a proven skill like pet massage, grooming and pet walking or if you make custom dog costumes, have a unique dog product you would like to promote or are a well-known dog expert, we would love to chat with you.” Calls for pet handlers and vendors will be posted “in the next few months,” the site says. Whether the event turns into the profitable industry that its organizers hope for will undoubtedly depend on how the first one unfolds. A spokeswoman did not immediately have answers to such questions of what will happen to dogs that get aggressive with humans or other dogs? Will owners be required to purchase additional insurance to cover any possibilities? Will food be provided and how will feedings be handled? This doesn’t seem like a very good idea,” said one. “Now all decks are poop decks,” said another. A couple of posters worried about dogs going overboard. HSFO supply is a bit tight for prompt delivery in Rotterdam and in the rest of the ARA, with lead times of 5-7 days recommended for the grade. VLSFO and LSMGO availability continues to be normal with lead times of 3-5 days. The ARA’s independently held fuel oil stocks dipped by 2% in November compared to October, according to Insights Global data. The region imported 301,000 b/d of fuel oil in November, an increase from 262,000 b/d imported in October, according to data from cargo tracker Vortexa. The ARA imported low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) and HSFO in a 51/49 ratio in November, unlike October’s 45/55 ratio which was tilted towards HSFO. The UK (16% of the total) was the region’s biggest fuel oil import source in November. The US (12%) ranked second and France (11%) at third. Other import sources were Sweden (10%) and India (9%). The ARA hub’s independent gasoil inventories – which include diesel and heating oil – registered a 3% dip in November. The region imported 359,000 b/d of gasoil and diesel in November, a moderate decline from 411,000 b/d imported in October, according to Vortexa data. In the German port of Hamburg, prompt supply is good across all three grades, a trader said. Lead times of 3-5 days are advised. HSFO and LSMGO tightness has eased in Gibraltar, a trader said. As a result, lead times have come down to 3-5 days for both grades. VLSFO lead time has remained consistent since last week with suppliers able to offer prompt delivery dates of 3-5 days across all three grades. The port is forecast with calm weather for the rest of this week, before strong wind gusts of 20-25 knots are set to hit on Sunday and Monday. This may trigger bunkering disruptions in the port area. In the Canary Islands’ Port of Las Palmas, VLSFO availability has tightened and a trader advises 5-7 days of lead time for the grade. Recent weather issues have caused some backlog, a trader said adding that VLSFO availability was tight for a couple of suppliers last week. HSFO and VLSFO availability has been consistent in Las Palmas since last week, with suppliers unable to offer for very prompt delivery dates. Lead times of 5-7 days are advised for both grades in Las Palmas. Rough weather may disrupt bunkering in the port on Wednesday and Thursday, a source said. Bunker availability is normal in the Spanish port of Barcelona with suppliers offering on a case-to-case basis, a trader said. Lead times of 5-7 days are advised for HSFO, VLSFO and LSMGO. Availability is normal in the Portuguese ports of Lisbon and Sines, a source said. Lead times of 3-5 days are advised for all three grades. Demand has been low in the Greek port of Piraeus, a trader told ENGINE. Despite low demand, prompt availability is tight and lead times of 7-10 days are advised for all three grades. This tightness could be exacerbated by a three-day refinery strike announced for Saturday in Piraeus, the trader said. Availability is expected to stabilise from Tuesday onwards. Other Mediterranean bunkering locations such as off Malta and Istanbul have witnessed a spike in demand. Availability is tight in both locations. Rough weather is forecast off Malta and in Istanbul on Friday, which may disrupt bunkering, a source said. In South Africa’s Durban and Richards Bay, VLSFO availability is still tight for prompt delivery dates, according to a trader. Lead times of 7-10 days are advised by traders for full coverage. Prompt availability of LSMGO is still very tight in Durban. A trader advised lead times of 7-10 days for the grade. Rough weather is forecast in Durban on Friday, when strong wind gusts of 26 knots are forecast. After a brief window of calm weather on Saturday, wind gusts will escalate to 36 knots on Sunday and may impact bunkering in the area. In Mauritius’ Port Louis, prompt bunker availability is good for all three grades, a trader said. Bad weather may impact bunkering in Port Louis on Friday and Saturday. Off Namibia’s Walvis Bay has good bunker availability with around five days recommended for all three grades, according to a trader. VLSFO and LSMGO have witnessed strong bunker demand, the source added. Adverse weather is forecast off Walvis Bay from Wednesday. It could last well into next week and may impact bunkering in the area. Meanwhile, civil unrest in Mozambique could trigger bunkering disruptions. Vessel operators and shipping companies should prepare for possible delays and interruptions, shipping agent Inchcape Shipping Services said. The country is facing civil unrest following the announcement of its national election results in October.
