Vikings waive former starting cornerback Akayleb Evans in another blow to 2022 draft classGames to snuggle up with this holiday season
The Washington Commanders are facing some uncertainty at the running back position due to injuries in Week 12 to Brian Robinson, Jr. (ankle) and Austin Ekeler (concussion protocol). In the meantime, they've signed Chris Rodriguez, Jr., who was just waived by the team days ago. Rodriguez was a sixth-round pick by the Commanders in 2023, and had spent most of the 2024 season on Washington's practice squad prior to this past week. Now he'll have a chance to join the active roster, and may be asked to play a featured role depending on the health of Robinson and Ekeler. Rodriguez has only appeared in four games for the Commanders this season, and only taken non-special teams snaps in two of them. In one of those games, against the New York Giants in Week 9, Rodriguez rushed 11 times for 52 yards. Jeremy McNichols would presumably get most of Washington's carries if both Robinson and Ekeler are unable to go on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, but Rodriguez would likely be asked to chip in with a sizable workload. It could be the best opportunity of his young career. What Rodriguez's signing means for Robinson and Ekeler is unclear. There's a chance that either of them could still play and Rodriguez's presence is merely precautionary. If not, though, it's next man up.
Article content The Opposition Conservatives say Premier David Eby’s decision to not hold a fall sitting of the legislature is an indication he has already broken his promise to hit the ground running on concerns British Columbians have about the cost of living, public safety and health care. On Friday, Eby backed away from his promise for a one-day fall sitting to pick a Speaker and instead announced that Burnaby-New Westminster MLA Raj Chouhan will continue in that position, which he has held for the past four years. Conservative MLA Elenore Sturko of Surrey-Cloverdale said she believes Eby’s decision to cancel the fall sitting is selfish. “We could have gone back for a brief sitting to debate and discuss and get rolling relief for British Columbians. We are approaching the holiday season, a lot of people have more expenses at this time of year. They want to be able to provide for their families for the holidays.” “He said that the election was a wake-up call. It’s more clear to me than ever, the selfish premier hasn’t changed a lick,” said Sturko. Hamish Telford, a University of the Fraser Valley political science professor, said Eby’s decision represents an erosion of democratic norms and the NDP should have called the legislature back within two weeks of the Oct. 19 election to ensure they continue to have the confidence of the house. In comparison, Saskatchewan held their election on Oct. 28 and a legislative session began Monday, less than a month later, with a throne speech. Telford said the government will now have four months to rule unopposed until they come back in February for a throne speech and the spring session. “We need to be establishing a principle that the legislature, not just the B.C. legislature, but any legislature in Canada, should meet as quickly as possible after an election to demonstrate that the government has the confidence of the legislature and therefore the authority to govern, and there is no need for this to take four months here in British Columbia,” he said. “I think it was critical to have a fall session of the legislature to elect the speaker and most critically, have a throne speech and a vote on the throne speech to ensure that the government has the authority to govern. This is the first time we’ve had an election in the fixed schedule for the fall, and it’s a terrible precedent to establish that.” Telford also believes the B.C. NDP has become too centralized, running most policies out of the premier’s office. As an example, he pointed to discussions about whether the promised grocery rebate of $500 a person can be accomplished through an order-in-council or whether it required legislation. A communications official in Eby’s office said there will still be a secret ballot to ensure Chouhan is confirmed as Speaker by all members of the house, at which point there will also be a throne speech to ensure the confidence of the house. It remains unclear what day the legislature will resume in February. As for that rebate, the official said the Ministry of Finance is putting together options about how to get that out the door but it won’t be ready until the new year. The premier has also made no secret he is still in negotiations with the Greens on shared priorities, discussions that have resulted in the delay of mandate letters to ministers until January. B.C. Green Leader Sonia Furstenau was unavailable Monday to discuss how those negotiations are going or how she feels about the cancellation of the fall sitting.Kim Pledges to Be Tough on USGEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands — Joshua Beadle hit a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to give Boston College a 63-61 win over Boise State and the Cayman Islands Classic championship on Tuesday. Take a seat, Josh Allen, there's no more need to play in the regular season You wouldn’t expect to use as a reference point for a potential NFL Most Valuable Player, but this is 2024 and, well, things are weird. Barely a day after Miami’s Cam Ward opted to sit for the second half of the Pop-Tart Bowl to protect his future options, Buffalo’s Josh Allen faces a similar question in Week 18 of the NFL regular season. No, Allen isn’t trying to protect his NFL standing; he’s got that pretty well locked down. Allen is chasing two career-defining milestones, an MVP award and a Lombardi trophy. Buffalo’s Week 18 game against the Patriots might help him burnish his chances at the former, but it will do absolutely nothing for the latter quest. Allen led Buffalo to a 40-14 annihilation of the New York Jets that was as thorough and merciless as anything short of a stadium demolition. Allen wasn’t spectacular – 16 of 27 for 182 yards and two touchdowns, plus another on the ground — but he didn’t need to be. Buffalo led 40-0 deep into the fourth quarter, and the destruction was so complete that even Mitchell Trubisky got some run at quarterback for the Bills. Next week, he ought to get a whole lot more. The only regular-season game left on Buffalo’s slate is a road contest against New England, and there’s absolutely nothing at stake for the Bills — or, for that matter, for the Patriots, who were eliminated from the playoff hunt back around the Fourth of July. Buffalo is locked into the second spot in the AFC playoffs, meaning the Bills are going to welcome the Chargers, Steelers or Broncos to chilly Orchard Park, New York, in a couple weeks. There’s no outcome of the Patriots game that changes Buffalo’s seeding. And there isn’t even any “best effort”/fair play concern for the Patriots, since there’s no scenario where that game means anything to the final teams in the hunt for the last AFC playoff spot. The Bills, in fact, have been playing with house money for awhile now. Buffalo clinched the AFC East with five weeks remaining in the year, the first team since the 2009 Colts to grab a divisional championship that early. (In a good omen for Buffalo, that Colts team would go on to reach the Super Bowl; in a familiar omen, the Colts lost that Super Bowl to New Orleans.) In other words, from a team perspective, there’s no reason for Allen to play next week. From an individual perspective ... maybe? Allen is, by all accounts and metrics, the runaway favorite to win his first MVP. BetMGM has him listed at -350, with Lamar Jackson well behind at +250 and Saquon Barkley at +2500. Yes, — two passing TDs, one rushing TD — and has a chance to prettify his stats even further with a regular season finale against the Browns. But is it worth risking Allen’s health on the road in search of an award he may already have won? After Sunday’s game, Bills head coach Sean McDermott stated his case succinctly and effectively: “I think Josh Allen continues to show why he should be the MVP.” McDermott declined to say whether Allen would play in Week 18, instead indicating that the team would discuss how to handle rest later this week. Allen, for his part, punted like it was fourth-and-long, saying of the decision to play, “That’s up to coach. I’ll do whatever is asked of me.” That’s the right answer from a political perspective, but from a Super Bowl-chasing one, there’s an obvious play here. It’s time for Allen to watch Buffalo-New England from the closest spot in Gillette Stadium. For him and Buffalo, there’s plenty of work left to do after Week 18.From earbuds to e-books: the best tech gifts for holidays 2024
