LOS ANGELES — Matthew Stafford speaks about it often this time of year. The beauty of meaningful football in December. How invigorating it is. How it can’t be taken for granted. If anyone would know, it would be Stafford. Prior to his trade to the Rams before the 2021 season, Stafford’s teams didn’t often have things at stake by the time the calendar turned to the 12th month. He made the playoffs three times in 12 years with the Detroit Lions, and in the down years his team often wasn’t even in the hunt. But in the thick of his third December with the Rams – he missed the final month of 2022 with injuries – Stafford has continued to thrive as the weather gets colder. With four straight wins to start the month, Stafford has improved to 12-1 in December during his Rams tenure, with the chance to improve on that in Saturday night’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. “It’s nice to be on a little bit of a run right now. The cool thing about this group is we know that we earn every single bit of it,” Stafford said. “We don’t win the next game because we’ve won however many times before it. You don’t lose the next game because you had a hiccup the week before, whatever it is. You have to go out there and earn it every single week.” Stafford has completed 67% of his 100 passes this month for 773 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. That improves his overall December stats with the Rams (9-6) to a 66.8% completion rate for 3,272 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The only December loss for Stafford with the Rams came last season in a road game against the Baltimore Ravens that went to overtime and ended with a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown . Aside from that fluky result, a clean record. “He’s just clutch,” head coach Sean McVay said. “The best part about Matthew Stafford is he’s got all these amazing numbers and stats that he’s put up and he’s this special quarterback; he wants to win. And I think he understands what it takes, especially in that month when that’s such a critical time to be able to peak at the right time if you’re gonna get an opportunity to get into the tournament.” A moment that stood out to McVay this month came during the Rams’ final drive in a Week 15 win at San Francisco . After the two-minute warning and in 49er territory, leading by three and trying to add more to the scoreboard, Stafford stood in the shotgun formation with an empty backfield. He sent receiver Cooper Kupp in motion, which pulled defensive backs Talanoa Hufanga and Deommodore Lenoir across the field and away from tight end Colby Parkinson. The play wasn’t designed to go to Parkinson, but Stafford recognized the open man and found Parkinson on a seam route for a 14-yard gain. The play got the Rams a fresh set of downs to burn the 49ers’ timeouts and some clock, too, and put the team comfortably into Joshua Karty’s field goal range to add three extra points. In the third quarter of 2024, the Clean Petroleum Products (CPP) trade remained robust, despite a 6% drop in tonne-miles since Q2. High cargo volumes and tonne-miles remain at historical average highs, primarily driven by geopolitical tensions. These tensions have led to more vessels rerouting away from the Suez Canal toward the Cape of Good Hope. Global oil demand also remained firm in the third quarter, driven by growth in advanced economies. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global oil demand increased by 1.1 million barrels per day in the third quarter, driven by global gasoil deliveries, despite a contraction in overall Chinese demand. Furthermore, global oil demand for 2024 remains firm at an average of 102.8 million barrels per day, an increase of 0.9 million barrels from 2023. Despite steady demand, product tanker rates were under pressure in the last part of Q3, mainly due to increased competition from the crude sector. With a seasonally weak crude market, some crude tankers – despite high conversion costs – shifted to carrying refined products. During the quarter, Suezmax and VLCC tankers transported more diesel shipments from the Middle East to Europe, a trade typically handled by LR2s. As winter approaches, both crude and product markets are expected to strengthen seasonally. Technical challenges and reduced commercial incentives for using crude carriers to carry refined products limit cannibalization, as shown in recent daily loading data, and this drives forward tightness in supply versus demand for the clean products segments. For the first time in history, the product markets will experience a full winter period where seasonal increases in Atlantic demand, partly serviced by the Eastern hemisphere, will exclusively have to route via the Cape of Good Hope rather than Suez. Additionally, improving refinery margins and gradually increasing distances between refineries and end consumers support a strong outlook for earnings in the product sector. On the supply side, the orderbook-to-fleet ratio is approximately 20% for deliveries through 2028 as of November 2024. However, a growing number of tankers over 20 years old are likely scrapping candidates. These older vessels, with lower utilization rates and frequent involvement in “dark trades”, effectively reduce available tonnage and increase demand for the existing fleet. Furthermore, LR2s comprise over 50% of the new tonnage expected in the next few years, and historically, 70% of LR2 capacity has been absorbed into the dirty petroleum products trade. This is further supported by aged Panamax, Aframax, and large crude tanker fleets where newbuild order books are limited compared to the clean segments. Applying 70% dirty products trading for LR2 newbuild capacity reduces the clean products book-to-fleet ratio to 13%. As a result, the overall supply balance is expected to remain manageable in the coming years. Looking ahead, the product tanker market outlook is positive. Demand is expected to remain strong, supported by longer transport distances and refinery dislocation. With winter’s seasonal factors and reduced cannibalization from crude tankers, the market is set to benefit from a high-rate environment for product tankers. This will however be impacted if there is normalization of trade through the Red Sea, or further addition of new tonnage. Hafnia will pay a quarterly dividend of USD 0.3790 per share. (AP) — When the San Francisco 49ers used a third-round pick to draft Jake Moody last year, the hope was it would settle their kicking position for years to come. A shaky second half to Moody's second season with San Francisco has put that into question headed to the offseason. Moody missed his sixth field goal in the past seven games last week, leading to questions about whether the 49ers will need to replace him or at least bring in competition for next season. Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed confidence in Moody on Thursday, attributing some of the struggles to a high ankle sprain he suffered in his kicking leg earlier in the season. “I still feel the same about him, that I believe he is going to be our guy," Shanahan said. “Everyone has got to perform and do things like that and I think he has had a tough year. ... I thought he was doing really well and then had a high ankle sprain to his kicking foot. Since he’s come back, he hasn’t been as consistent, obviously. But I think a lot of that probably has to do with that, just common-sense wise.” Moody got off to a strong start this season, making all six field goals he attempted in the season opener and going 13 for 14 before injuring his ankle while attempting to make a tackle on a kickoff return in Week 5. He missed three games and has struggled since he returned. He missed three field goals in first first game back at Tampa Bay, two more in the snow at Buffalo in Week 13 and then a 41-yarder last week against the Dolphins. “That’s the great thing about kicking is, you can be as talented as whoever and you can struggle,” Moody said. “I feel like this year, I’ve struggled. It doesn’t really waver my confidence or anything. I feel like, throughout my entire life, I’ve gone through struggles, I’ve gone through high points. The biggest thing is to just stay consistent, not change anything.” Moody had an up-and-down rookie season, making 21 of 25 field goals in the regular season and missing only one extra point. But he missed a potential game-winning kick in a loss at Cleveland and missed field goals in playoff wins against Green Bay and Detroit. Moody then made three field goals in the Super Bowl with two coming from more than 50 yards, including a go-ahead 53-yard kick late in the fourth quarter against Kansas City. But Moody also had an extra point blocked in that game. “I believe we’ve got the right guy and I think that eventually, I think he has shown that at times,” Shanahan said. "I thought he showed that at times his rookie year. I thought he showed that big time being 12 out of 13 to start this year. Timberwolves push back start time vs. Spurs because of issue with game court
Alec Baldwin’s Western “Rust” had its world premiere at a film festival in Poland Wednesday, but the actor wasn’t present because he wasn’t invited. Baldwin’s presence would have been too “distracting,” said Kazimierz Suwała, the director of the international EnergaCamerimage film festival in the city of Torun. “We didn’t invite Alec Baldwin, and we never considered doing so,” Suwała told The Hollywood Reporter. “That would be too distracting. What this is about is honoring Halyna’s dreams for her work.” Suwała is referring to Halyna Hutchins, the Ukrainian-born cinematographer for “Rust.” Hutchins, an up-and-coming talent in the industry, was killed in October 2021, after Baldwin pointed a gun at her during a rehearsal on the film’s set outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. The gun went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Baldwin has said he pulled back the hammer — but not the trigger — and the revolver fired. Though the veteran film and TV star called Hutchins’ death a tragic accident, he was charged with manslaughter. However, the case was ultimately dismissed on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to turn over evidence. It’s not known whether Baldwin would have gone to the festival if he were invited, said TMZ, which reported that he was spotted in New York City Monday, pushing a stroller. While Baldwin didn’t travel to Poland to walk the red carpet or to promote “Rust” at the screening, organizers held a moment of silence for Hutchins, the Associated Press reported . The festival is a popular industry event that is devoted to cinematography. Souza, a Palo Alto-based filmmaker and Fremont native, then introduced the film. Souza told the audience that he initially couldn’t imagine trying to finish the film after Hutchins’ death. “It just hurt too much,” he said. But Hutchins’ husband, Matthew, wanted the film to be finished, and came on board as executive producer. Baldwin also wanted to finish the film and returned to the set, which had moved to Montana. But like Baldwin, Matthew Hutchins didn’t attend the premiere. Moreover, Hutchins’ other family members also boycotted the event. “It was always my hope to meet my daughter in Poland to watch her work come alive on screen,” Olga Solovey, Hutchins’ mother, who lives in Ukraine, said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital . “Unfortunately, that was ripped away from me when Alec Baldwin discharged his gun and killed my daughter.” “Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death,” the statement from Solovey continued. “Instead, he seeks to unjustly profit from his killing of my daughter. That is the reason why I refuse to attend the festival for the promotion of ‘Rust,’ especially now when there is still no justice for my daughter.” It’s questionable whether anyone involved in the making of “Rust” will see much profit from it. It could be released sometime in the United States, but it’s not clear when or if it will been screened in movie theaters or go direct to streaming. NBC News reported that the audience response at the premiere was “polite.” “Rust” follows the story of a 13-year-old boy who is sentenced to be hanged after he fatally shoots a rancher by accident. He goes on the run with his estranged grandfather, played by Baldwin. The audience clapped through the film’s closing credits, strengthening their applause when a dedication to Hutchins appeared, NBC News reported. But a fair number of moviegoers left the theater before the credits ended and prior to a Q&A with Souza and with cinematographer Bianca Cline, who completed the movie on Hutchins’ behalf. New York-based film industry expert Rob Rosenberg said “Rust” could get “butts in seats” because of the public’s curiosity. “It’ll be interesting to see if there is a group of people who choose to stay away from the film entirely due to Halyna Hutchin’s death,” Rosenberg, founder of Telluride Legal Strategies, said in an email statement. “People may also choose to see the movie because they might be curious about how they finished the film after the tragic shooting.” Meanwhile, organizers of the EnergaCamerimage festival defended giving the film its world premiere. “Yes, I know it has become divisive,” Suwala told The Hollywood Reporter. “Some felt we were doing it for promotional reasons and that it was inappropriate to screen a film that resulted in a death. But for us, the motivation was very simple. Halyna had a strong connection to this festival. She attended several times. And we were contacted by her friends, who told us that before shooting even began on ‘Rust,’ she told them that the film was very important to her and it was her dream to screen it at Camerimage.” One of those friends, cinematographer Rachel Mason, made an emotional speech at the premiere to defend the film. “I feel strongly that I need to make a statement about a very misunderstood film and the people who made it, who I believe are heroic people,” said Mason, who worked on a documentary about completing the film after Hutchins’ death.
