United Airlines travelers with lost luggage have a new tool to track their bags. If the lost bag has an Apple AirTag in it, that information can now be passed directly to United, the airline announced Thursday. The new feature, called Share Item Location, allows travelers with an AirTag or other Find My network accessory to share the location with the airline’s customer service team to help locate their luggage in the event it’s misplaced. United says more than 99% of its customers pick up their luggage without a hitch. Travelers on United whose bags do not arrive at their destination can file a delayed baggage report with United and share the link to the item’s location either through the United app or via text message. After the report has been submitted, customer service agents will be able to locate the item on an interactive map alongside a timestamp of a recent update. The shared location will be disabled after a customer has the bag, and customers can also stop sharing the location of the item at any time on their own. The location link will also automatically expire after seven days. Using AirTags or other tracking devices on luggage is increasingly popular among frequent travelers, with a significant boom following the 2022 Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown , which displaced thousands of travelers over Christmas and into 2023, alongside much of their belongings. United says lost bags are rare, with more than 99% of its customers arriving with their bags. It says the new technology will help those with lost bags to recover them more quickly because the airline will have more information about them. Apple previously announced the new service will also be integrated at other air carriers, including Delta Air Lines. Others include Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Vueling.
By John Ogunsemore A former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has said President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidy was not hasty or rushed as being insinuated in some quarters . Omokri, who was a social media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, stated this in a Facebook post on Saturday. He was reacting to a recent remark by Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, that Tinubu and his predecessors found themselves in power by accident and were therefore not fully prepared before assuming office. Omokri said Tinubu showed his readiness to govern by removing fuel subsidy at the outset of his administration. The ex- presidential aide insisted that Tinubu displayed great wisdom in taking action during his honeymoon period, when Nigerians historically gave new administrations the benefit of the doubt because of their euphoria that the old unpopular regime was gone. He stressed that such decisive action must be taken immediately and by surprise or it will never happen. “There was absolutely nothing like a rushed or hasty removal of fuel subsidy. “President Tinubu did the right thing. It was a masterstroke. “If you want to take such a decisive action in Nigeria, you do it immediately and by surprise, or it will never happen. If you alert people, you, as President, will have paralysis from analysis. “The day you give notice by announcing that you plan to remove it, you will start receiving calls from the owners of Nigeria. “Emirs and First Class traditional and spiritual leaders will come to your house and office to pressure you not to remove it. “Activists will rally Nigerians to take to the streets. The Nigerian Labour Congress will go on strike. The media will exaggerate its effects and paint doomsday scenarios,” he said. He added, “And the result is that you, as President, would be in a catch-22 position between the devil and the deep blue sea. “If you go ahead, you will appear insensitive. If you demurred, you look weak,” he added. Omokri maintained that Tinubu’s actions showed that, unlike Bishop Matthew Kukah claimed, he was ready to be President and had planned ahead. “That is why he hit the ground running on his first day and week by passing more policies and initiatives than any other administration before him, except Murtala Muhammad’s military government, on his first day, first week, first month and first 100 days. “In one week, Tinubu has achieved what Buhari would have taken one year to complete. This vindicates what I said during the campaigns, that any of the major Presidential candidates would have been better than Buhari. “Whether it is the immediate removal of fuel subsidy, flotation of the ,naira, the granting of Local Government autonomy, or the implementation of Student Loans to federal and state universities, all achieved with enthusiastic alacrity in his first year, one thing nobody can accuse President Tinubu of is not being prepared or decisive.”
The Detroit Lions will play without two high draft picks in rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. while possibly getting back veteran Emmanuel Moseley against the host Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Arnold was downgraded Saturday from questionable to out because of a groin injury. He was limited at practice on Thursday and participated in a full practice on Friday. The Lions drafted Arnold with the 24th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Arnold, 21, has started all 10 games and has 38 tackles and six passes defended. Rakestraw (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve after not practicing all week. He already had been ruled out for Sunday's game. Detroit picked Rakestraw in the second round (61st overall) out of Missouri. He has played in eight games and has six tackles. Rakestraw, 22, has played on 46 defensive snaps (8 percent) and 95 special teams snaps (42 percent). Moseley had full practice sessions all week and was activated from injured reserve on Saturday but was listed as questionable for Sunday. The 28-year-old is in his second season with Detroit and appeared in one game last season before going on IR in October 2023. He was placed on IR on Aug. 27 with a designation to return. Moseley played from 2018-22 for the San Francisco 49ers and had 162 tackles, four interceptions -- one returned for a touchdown -- and 33 passes defensed in 46 games (33 starts). On December 12, Professor Franklin Bien and his research team in the Department of Electrical Engineering at UNIST announced the creation of a revolutionary electric resonance-based (ERWPT) system, marking a significant milestone in the field. This modern technology allows devices to charge virtually anywhere within a 3D environment, addressing the longstanding challenges associated with traditional magnetic resonance wireless power transfer (MRWPT) and offering a robust solution that enables efficient power transmission without the constraints of precise device positioning. The paper is in the journal . While MRWPT has served as a pioneering concept in wireless energy transfer, it has faced limitations due to the constraints of magnetic fields on receiver arrangement. This lack of monopole in MRWPT leads to a diminished sensitivity in power transfer efficiency (PTE) as receiver positioning changes, complicating the practical implementation of efficient wireless power solutions. In contrast, ERWPT harnesses the monopole characteristic of electric charges, providing a significant advantage over magnetic field-based methods. The newly developed technology achieved an impressive nonradiative power transfer of up to 50 watts and a PTE of 46% over a distance of 2 meters, while maintaining consistent efficiency regardless of variations in receiver arrangement. For context, researchers at MIT achieved a transmission efficiency of 40% at the same distance using magnetic resonance methods in 2007. Professor Bien stated, "While MIT's research indicated the feasibility of mid-range charging using a self-resonant method, our technology represents a genuine innovation that enables charging anywhere within a three-dimensional space." He further elaborated, "This development will provide wireless charging solutions for logistics robots and automation systems in smart factories." A key element of this breakthrough is the enhanced physical structure of the transceiver, featuring an open bifilar coil configuration. This design optimizes electric resonance and facilitates effective power transfer by allowing devices to be freely positioned within the electric field without compromising efficiency. This configuration also enables wireless power transmission over greater distances. Additionally, the ERWPT system allows for the simultaneous charging of multiple electronic devices, with experimental results confirming that power transmission maintains consistent efficiency even when multiple receivers are situated within a shared space. The research team underscored the academic significance of their study, providing a new perspective on the nature of that extends beyond purely technical achievements.
