NEW DELHI: Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister of India and architect of the country’s economic liberalization, has passed away at the age of 92. Singh, who served two terms as prime minister and held key roles in government, was hospitalised at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi late on Thursday due to his prolonged illness. “With profound grief, we inform the demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26th December 2024. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM,” AIIMS said in a statement, confirming the death. An economist by training, Singh was instrumental in transforming India’s economy during his tenure as finance minister in the early 1990s. His policies of economic liberalisation are credited with opening up India to global markets, setting the stage for the country’s rapid growth. Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, a village in the Punjab province of British India (now in Pakistan), Singh’s family migrated to India after the partition in 1947. Despite the turmoil of partition, he excelled academically, earning a first-class degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Singh continued his studies at the University of Cambridge, where he obtained a postgraduate degree in Economics in 1957, and later earned a DPhil from the University of Oxford in 1962. Singh began his career in public service in 1972 as Chief Economic Advisor, navigating India through a period of inflation and global oil shocks. He went on to serve as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985, where he focused on economic stabilization and financial regulation. He also held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission from 1985 to 1987, playing a crucial role in shaping India’s long-term economic strategies. Ex-prime minister entered politics in 1991 when then-Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao appointed him as Finance Minister. In a candid interview with British journalist Mark Tully in 2005, Singh recounted the moment by saying, ”On the day (Rao) was formulating his cabinet, he sent his Principal Secretary to me saying, ‘The PM would like you to become the Minister of Finance’. I didn’t take it seriously. He eventually tracked me down the next morning, rather angry, and demanded that I get dressed up and come to Rashtrapati Bhavan for the swearing in. So that’s how I started in politics”. As Finance Minister, Singh faced a severe economic crisis, with India facing a balance of payments issue and dwindling foreign reserves. His groundbreaking reforms, which included liberalizing the economy, encouraging privatization, and integrating India into global markets, not only averted the crisis but also set India on a path to becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. Singh served two consecutive terms as Prime Minister, leading a coalition government under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). His tenure from 2004 to 2014 was marked by rapid economic growth, which positioned India as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. During this period, he introduced landmark social reforms, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Right to Information Act. Singh also negotiated the historic Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement, which ended decades of nuclear isolation for India. However, his tenure as Prime Minister was also marred by corruption scandals, such as the 2G spectrum case and the coal block allocation controversy, which cast a shadow over his achievements. In recent years, Singh withdrew from active politics due to health reasons, with his last public appearance being in January 2024 at the launch of his daughter’s book. He retired from the Rajya Sabha in April 2024. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A fight broke out at midfield after Michigan 13-10 on Saturday as players attempted to plant their flag and were met by who confronted them. Police had to use pepper spray to break up the players, who threw punches and shoves in the melee that overshadowed the rivalry game. Ohio State police said in a statement “multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray.” Ohio State police will investigate the fight, according to the statement. After the Ohio State players confronted their bitter rivals at midfield, defensive end Jack Sawyer grabbed the top of the Wolverines’ flag and ripped it off the pole as the brawl moved toward the Michigan bench. Eventually, police officers rushed into the ugly scene. Ohio State coach Ryan Day said he understood the actions of his players. “There are some prideful guys on our team who weren’t going to sit back and let that happen,” Day said. The two Ohio State players made available after the game brushed off questions about it. Michigan running back Kalel Mullings, who rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown, didn’t like how the Buckeyes players involved themselves in the Wolverines’ postgame celebration. He called it “classless.” “For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game,” he said in an on-field interview with Fox Sports. “It’s just bad for the sport, bad for college football. But at the end of the day, you know some people got to — they got to learn how to lose, man. ... We had 60 minutes, we had four quarters, to do all that fighting.” Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said everybody needs to do better. “So much emotions on both sides,” he said. “Rivalry games get heated, especially this one. It’s the biggest one in the country, so we got to handle that better.” ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up . The NFL reinstated Jabrill Peppers from the commissioner’s exempt list on Monday afternoon. Peppers had been on the list since October 9, which prevented him from suiting up with the Patriots or practicing with the team. The safety hasn’t been cleared of the domestic violence charges he’s facing — his trial date is set for January 22 — but the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed was able to offer a window into the league’s thinking. “Per a league source, the reason Patriots S Jabrill Peppers was removed from the commissioner’s exempt list was because the baseline suspension for a violation of the personal conduct policy involving the actions for which he’s accused is six games,” Kyed posted on X. “He’s already missed seven games. If Peppers had remained on the exempt list through his next court date, Jan. 22, he would have missed a total of 12 games. The NFL may still impose discipline at the end of the process if evidence is found that demonstrates Peppers violated the personal conduct policy. The NFL will look to conclude its investigation once there has been a disposition.” So the league could still suspend Peppers after the process is through, but for now, things are in the hands of the Patriots. Peppers faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation or suffocation, possession of Class B substance (cocaine) and assault and battery on a household or family member stemming from a domestic dispute in October. In an interview last month, Patriots owner Robert Kraft said Peppers would “be gone” if the allegations against him were true. “When you read the (police report) initially, it turns your stomach,” Kraft said in October. “Once he goes on the commissioner exempt list, they do their independent checking. We’re doing ours. If what was reported is true, he’s gone. There have been some suggestions that this was a set-up and a lot of what was reported isn’t accurate ... We want to get the facts.” The Patriots issued a statement via a team spokesperson following Peppers’ reinstatement on Monday afternoon: “The league has removed Jabrill Peppers from the commissioner’s exempt list. After missing the past seven games, he will now return to the active roster. We understand that the league’s investigation into the matter will continue, as will the legal process. We will await the outcome of both before making any further comment.” Shortly after being reinstated, Peppers took to social media and posted a smiling photo with the caption, “Smile through it all, it’s gon be alright!” More Patriots ContentUS budget airlines are struggling. PTI playing political tactics to gain personal interest: AhsanBy Kemberley Washington, CPA, Bankrate.com (TNS) As the end of the year approaches, now’s the time to start preparing for filing your 2024 tax return in 2025. When it comes to tax strategies, generally Dec. 31 is the deadline to make changes that might lower your tax bill. One major exception is the deadline for contributing to a Roth or traditional IRA : You have until April 15, 2025, to make a contribution to a Roth or traditional IRA for tax year 2024. If you qualify for deductible IRA contributions , then a contribution to your traditional IRA can reduce your taxable income for 2024. Here are tips and strategies to prepare now for the 2025 tax-filing deadline. If you had significant changes in your life in 2024 — maybe you got married or divorced, started your own business, or had to claim unemployment benefits — your taxes may be more complicated. As a result, you might need to hire a certified public accountant (CPA), enrolled agent (EA) or other tax professional to prepare and file your taxes. If you decide to hire someone, it’s best to start planning for that sooner rather than later. Waiting until the calendar flips to April could cost you. The average fee for a professional to prepare and file a simple Form 1040 tax return, with no itemized deductions, is about $220, according to a survey by the National Society of Accountants in 2020-2021, the most recent data available. But that amount rises quickly for more complex returns, and varies depending on where you live. For example, a Form 1040 with itemized deductions costs an average of $432 in states on the Pacific Coast, compared with $285 in New England. No matter where you live, prices usually rise as the tax deadline approaches, so it’s smart to start searching for a tax pro soon. If you’re uncomfortable doing your taxes on your own and can’t afford a CPA, enrolled agent or other tax pro, or to pay for tax software , there are free options to consider. The IRS currently offers three ways to prepare your taxes for free: •With the IRS Free File program, the IRS partners with for-profit tax-software companies that offer free tax-prep software to eligible taxpayers so they can file their federal tax returns for free. Some taxpayers may also qualify for a free state tax filing, depending on the software provider. In January, the IRS will announce the income limit to qualify for the program for the 2025 tax season (for filing 2024 tax returns). For the 2024 tax season (2023 tax returns), taxpayers’ adjusted gross income (AGI) couldn’t exceed $79,000. •The IRS also offers its Direct File program, a free tool that allows you to file your federal income tax return directly with the IRS at no cost. The program supports simple tax returns and is available only in certain states. Check to see if you qualify here. •Another free-filing option is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. IRS-certified volunteers offer free basic tax preparation in person to people who earn less than $67,000 a year, are disabled or whose English is limited. The IRS has an online location tool for hundreds of free tax preparation sites in the U.S. (the locator tool is updated from February through April). Some VITA sites also offer online tax-prep assistance. Now is a good time to create an IRS online account. If you want to see your Form 1040 from last year, or you’re missing a prior year Form W-2 or mortgage interest statement, you can find your documents using this free tax tool. Another benefit of creating an IRS online account is that it allows you to quickly obtain your prior year’s tax information without sitting on the phone for hours with an IRS representative, says Carl Johnson, a certified public accountant in New Orleans. An IRS online account also lets you view your account balance and payment history for each year. You can also create a payment plan to settle your federal income tax debt within minutes. If you’re 73 years old and have enjoyed watching your 401(k) or IRA grow tax-free without touching it, remember that the IRS is going to want its share each year. That means you’ll have to make withdrawals — and pay income tax. If you turned 73 in 2024, plan to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) at the latest by April 1, 2025. Read this IRS bulletin for more information. The amount of your RMDs is based on your age and the year-end values of your retirement accounts. A Roth IRA has two big tax advantages over a traditional IRA : Qualified withdrawals are not considered income for federal (and usually state) tax purposes, and you don’t have to take distributions from a Roth every year once you reach age 73. Converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA may save you money in the long run. Just know that when you convert an IRA to a Roth, it’s considered taxable income, which will raise your tax bill for that year. Generally, it’s best to convert to a Roth IRA when you’re in a low-income year. As tax season approaches, many people start receiving phone calls, emails and texts from entities claiming to be the IRS. Be wary, and understand that these are scams. Typically, the IRS will mail you a notice before using any other method of communication to notify you concerning issues with your tax return. The IRS won’t reach out via social media or text messaging. Relatedly, the IRS warns taxpayers to be careful when choosing a tax preparer. Taking time to vet your tax preparer is crucial to protect yourself from tax scams and fraud. Before hiring a tax professional, search that person’s name in the IRS database of federal tax return preparers to avoid dishonest “professionals.” “Taxpayers should check the tax professional’s credentials,” Johnson says. Tax pros without credentials “may take questionable positions without any degree of scrutiny or fear of losing their access to the profession,” Johnson says. Taxpayers who don’t file a tax return and owe a tax bill, or who file but don’t pay their tax bill on time, risk severe penalties. The IRS can even seize assets if necessary. Respond quickly if the IRS has been sending you letters because it found an error on your return or claims you owe back taxes. Typically, the IRS will send you a notice if you have a balance due, changes were made to your tax return, or the agency needs additional information. “If you ignore a collection letter from the IRS, you may face wage garnishments, liens, bank levies, and other adverse action. And in some cases, the amount due may increase for failure to respond,” Johnson says. Keep in mind the IRS does offer installment plans and other payment plans. Make copies of your correspondence and use only the U.S. Postal Service, the postmark from which is your proof of timeliness when responding. But whatever you do, don’t ignore the IRS because this may cause more issues in the future. ©2024 Bankrate.com. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

Marijuana is legal in Nevada and the odor can often be prevalent among those attending sporting events. “Yes, there was a smell of weed,” Williams driver Franco Colapinto said. “If they dope (test) the drivers now, I think we’ll all test positive. When we all test positive, there will be a mess.” Drivers had three practice sessions as well as qualifying beginning Thursday leading up to Saturday night’s race. Max Verstappen, who went into the race hoping to clinch his fourth consecutive series title, said the smell of marijuana was quite noticeable. “I was quite high in the car,” Verstappen said jokingly. “It’s not ideal because you can also smell it while driving and it’s quite extreme.” His Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, echoed Verstappen’s comments. “I’m tired of it already,” Perez said. “The amount is incredible.” Nevada voters approved legalizing the drug in 2016, and the new law took effect Jan. 1, 2017. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law. Warner was 27-of-42 passing for 430 yards and had 294 yards and two TD throws in the first half when the Owls (4-6, 3-5 American Athletic Conference) rolled up 367 yards offense and 19 first downs for a 27-7 lead at the break. Trailing 35-14 with five minutes left, USF quarterback Bryce Archie had to leave the game after taking a late hit. Rice recovered an onside kick and got the clock down to 27 seconds on six straight Christian Francisco runs before turning the ball over on downs at the USF 28. Special Counsel Jack Smith on Monday moved to dismiss the case against US President-elect Donald Trump for allegedly conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden. Smith, in a filing with the judge in Washington presiding over the historic case, said it should be dropped in light of a long-standing Justice Department policy not to prosecute a sitting president. The special counsel asked District Judge Tanya Chutkan to dismiss the case “without prejudice” — leaving open the possibility it could be revived after Trump leaves office four years from now. Possibilty of revival after Trump leaves office Smith paused the election interference case earlier this month after Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election. “The Government’s position on the merits of the defendant’s prosecution has not changed,” Smith said in the filing with Chutkan. “But the circumstances have.” “It has long been the position of the Department of Justice that the United States Constitution forbids the federal indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution of a sitting President,” Smith said. ALSO READ: WATCH G20: Ramaphosa promises to carry on ‘good work’ done by Brazil “As a result this prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated.” Trump’s communications director Steven Cheung welcomed the move to dismiss the case, calling it a “major victory for the rule of law.” “The American People and President Trump want an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and we look forward to uniting our country,” Cheung said in a statement. ‘Major victory for the rule of law’ Trump is accused of conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding — the session of Congress called to certify Biden’s win, which was violently attacked on January 6, 2021, by a mob of the then-president’s supporters. Trump is also accused of seeking to disenfranchise US voters with his false claims that he won the 2020 election. Smith charged Trump with mishandling top secret documents after leaving the White House, but that case was tossed out by a federal judge in Florida, a Trump appointee, on the grounds that Smith was unlawfully appointed. ALSO READ: JD Vance’s rise through Trump’s unpredictable orbit Smith had appealed that dismissal but is now expected to drop the appeal. Trump also faces two state cases — in New York and Georgia. He was convicted in New York in May of 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 election to stop her from revealing an alleged 2006 sexual encounter. Trump’s cases Judge Juan Merchan has postponed sentencing while he considers a request from Trump’s lawyers that the conviction be thrown out in light of the Supreme Court ruling in July that an ex-president has broad immunity from prosecution. In Georgia, Trump faces racketeering charges over his efforts to subvert the 2020 election results in the southern state, but that case will likely be frozen while he is in office under the policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. – By: © Agence France-PresseReady to Launch, Asterion Token Brings a New Era of Secure Digital InvestmentSÃO PAULO — Brazil’s federal police said Thursday they had indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people for allegedly attempting a coup to keep him in office after his defeat in the 2022 elections. Police said their findings were being delivered Thursday to Brazil’s Supreme Court, which must decide whether to refer them to Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet, who would either formally charge Bolsonaro and put him on trial or toss the investigation. The right-wing former president has denied all claims that he tried to stay in office after his narrow electoral defeat in 2022 to leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has faced a series of legal threats since then. Police said in a brief statement that the Supreme Court had agreed to reveal the names of all 37 people who were indicted “to avoid the dissemination of incorrect news.” The 700-page police document will probably take several days for the court to review, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said. Dozens of former and current Bolsonaro aides were among those indicted, including Gen. Walter Braga Netto, who was his running mate in the 2022 campaign; former Army commander Gen. Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira; Valdemar Costa Neto, the chairman of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party; and his veteran former advisor Gen. Augusto Heleno. The investigation started last year. On Tuesday, four military men and one federal police agent were arrested as part of the same inquiry. Other investigations focus on Bolosnaro’s potential roles in smuggling diamond jewelry into Brazil without properly declaring it and in directing a subordinate to falsify his and others’ COVID-19 vaccination statuses. Bolsonaro has denied involvement in either. Another investigation found that he had abused his authority to cast doubt on the country’s voting system, and judges barred him from running again until 2030. The far-reaching investigations have weakened Bolsonaro’s status as a leader of Brazil’s right wing, said Carlos Melo, a political science professor at Insper University in São Paulo. “Bolsonaro is already barred from running in the 2026 elections,” Melo told the Associated Press. “And if he is convicted he could also be jailed by then. To avoid being behind bars, he will have to convince Supreme Court justices that he has nothing to do with a plot that involves dozens of his aides. That’s a very tall order,” Melo said. On Tuesday, the federal police arrested four military officials and a federal police officer accused of plotting to overthrow the government after the 2022 election, including plans to kill Lula and other top officials.
