NEW DELHI: Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister of India and architect of the country’s economic liberalization, has passed away at the age of 92. Singh, who served two terms as prime minister and held key roles in government, was hospitalised at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi late on Thursday due to his prolonged illness. “With profound grief, we inform the demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26th December 2024. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM,” AIIMS said in a statement, confirming the death. An economist by training, Singh was instrumental in transforming India’s economy during his tenure as finance minister in the early 1990s. His policies of economic liberalisation are credited with opening up India to global markets, setting the stage for the country’s rapid growth. Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, a village in the Punjab province of British India (now in Pakistan), Singh’s family migrated to India after the partition in 1947. Despite the turmoil of partition, he excelled academically, earning a first-class degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Singh continued his studies at the University of Cambridge, where he obtained a postgraduate degree in Economics in 1957, and later earned a DPhil from the University of Oxford in 1962. Singh began his career in public service in 1972 as Chief Economic Advisor, navigating India through a period of inflation and global oil shocks. He went on to serve as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985, where he focused on economic stabilization and financial regulation. He also held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission from 1985 to 1987, playing a crucial role in shaping India’s long-term economic strategies. Ex-prime minister entered politics in 1991 when then-Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao appointed him as Finance Minister. In a candid interview with British journalist Mark Tully in 2005, Singh recounted the moment by saying, ”On the day (Rao) was formulating his cabinet, he sent his Principal Secretary to me saying, ‘The PM would like you to become the Minister of Finance’. His tenure from 2004 to 2014 was marked by rapid economic growth, which positioned India as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. During this period, he introduced landmark social reforms, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Right to Information Act. The NFL reinstated Jabrill Peppers from the commissioner’s exempt list on Monday afternoon. Peppers had been on the list since October 9, which prevented him from suiting up with the Patriots or practicing with the team. The safety hasn’t been cleared of the domestic violence charges he’s facing — his trial date is set for January 22 — but the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed was able to offer a window into the league’s thinking. “Per a league source, the reason Patriots S Jabrill Peppers was removed from the commissioner’s exempt list was because the baseline suspension for a violation of the personal conduct policy involving the actions for which he’s accused is six games,” Kyed posted on X. “He’s already missed seven games. If Peppers had remained on the exempt list through his next court date, Jan. 22, he would have missed a total of 12 games. The NFL may still impose discipline at the end of the process if evidence is found that demonstrates Peppers violated the personal conduct policy. The NFL will look to conclude its investigation once there has been a disposition.” So the league could still suspend Peppers after the process is through, but for now, things are in the hands of the Patriots. Peppers faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation or suffocation, possession of Class B substance (cocaine) and assault and battery on a household or family member stemming from a domestic dispute in October. One major exception is the deadline for contributing to a Roth or traditional IRA : You have until April 15, 2025, to make a contribution to a Roth or traditional IRA for tax year 2024. If you qualify for deductible IRA contributions , then a contribution to your traditional IRA can reduce your taxable income for 2024. Here are tips and strategies to prepare now for the 2025 tax-filing deadline. If you had significant changes in your life in 2024 — maybe you got married or divorced, started your own business, or had to claim unemployment benefits — your taxes may be more complicated. As a result, you might need to hire a certified public accountant (CPA), enrolled agent (EA) or other tax professional to prepare and file your taxes. If you decide to hire someone, it’s best to start planning for that sooner rather than later. Waiting until the calendar flips to April could cost you. The average fee for a professional to prepare and file a simple Form 1040 tax return, with no itemized deductions, is about $220, according to a survey by the National Society of Accountants in 2020-2021, the most recent data available. An IRS online account also lets you view your account balance and payment history for each year. You can also create a payment plan to settle your federal income tax debt within minutes. If you’re 73 years old and have enjoyed watching your 401(k) or IRA grow tax-free without touching it, remember that the IRS is going to want its share each year. That means you’ll have to make withdrawals — and pay income tax. If you turned 73 in 2024, plan to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) at the latest by April 1, 2025. Special Counsel Jack Smith on Monday moved to dismiss the case against US President-elect Donald Trump for allegedly conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden. New Delhi, Nov 22 (PTI) A total of 921 degrees was awarded at the seventh convocation ceremony of Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW) on Friday. The convocation was attended by LG V K Saxena, who serves as the chancellor of the university, and Delhi Chief mMinister Atishi as the Guest of Honour. During the ceremony, 735 undergraduate, 170 postgraduate and 16 doctorate degrees were awarded. The event also witnessed the awarding of two Chancellor Gold Medals and 12 Vice-Chancellor Gold Medals to the top-performing students across various disciplines.
