"The Six Triple Eight" recently debuted on Netflix and tells the story of the first predominantly Black and female army battalion that served overseas during World War II. The film stars Kerry Washington and was written and directed by Tyler Perry. "You've got to watch this, because this story is not really told in America, and we need to tell the story," "The Six Triple Eight" Producer Nicole Avant said. 80 YEARS LATER, BATTLE OF THE BULGE HEROES REMIND US WHY WE MUST STAND UP TO TYRANTS The 6888th postal battalion consisted mostly of Black American women. They were assigned to locations in England and France during World War II . Their mission was to clear several years of backlogged mail. The 6888th postal battalion marches down a street in a scene from Netflix's "The Six Triple Eight." (Netflix) "When there is no mail, there is low morale," Washington, who stars as U.S. Army Maj. Charity Adams, says during the film. The phrase was the battalion's motto. Adams commanded around 850 women. She finished the war as a lieutenant colonel, becoming the highest-ranking Black woman during the war. According to U.S. Army records, more than 3.3 billion pieces of mail went through the military postal services to reach the frontlines in 1945 alone. The war department began receiving complaints that soldier morale was low due to a backlog of mail. A massive amount of letters and packages, along with a shortage in qualified postal workers, prompted the Army to deploy the 6888th. Kerry Washington plays the role of U.S. Army Maj. Charity Adams in Netflix's "The Six Triple Eight." (Left: National Archives; Right: Netflix) "They were determined, and they were committed, and they were focused. And they weren't going to let anything stand in between themselves and their goal and their mission," Avant said. "The only form of communication at this time was the U.S. Postal Service." Historians estimate the women processed 65,000 pieces of mail per eight-hour shift. They cleared a backlog of around 17 million pieces of mail. A National Archives photograph shows the 6888th postal battalion sorting mail. (National Archives) "Their secret was they were not waiting for things to be fair or right or just, even to be excellent. They were excellent and they were patriots. They wanted to serve the service members. They wanted to serve people on the front lines," Avant said. "They weren't really celebrated, which is why we wanted to do this movie." Avant produced the film using her background in politics and show business. She worked on former President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. She also served as U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas during Obama’s first term. She is the author of the bestselling novel, "Think You’ll Be Happy," which honors her mother in the aftermath of her tragic death . Her father, Clarence Avant, known as "The Black Godfather," was the chairman of Motown Records. "My father saw it right before he crossed over and he passed away," Avant said. "So, this film means even more to me. Extra special for that." Kerry Washington appears as U.S. Army Maj. Ebony Obsidian plays King in the film. Oprah Winfrey also appears in the movie as civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune. Susan Sarandon plays first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. "Everyone wanted to tell this story, about these unsung American heroes that really changed the game and the trajectory of World War II," Avant said. "Everyone was committed and focused and wanted to share this story of these great patriots." ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani police arrested thousands of Imran Khan supporters ahead of a rally in the capital to demand the ex-premier’s release from prison, a security officer said Sunday. Khan has been behind bars for more than a year and has over 150 criminal cases against him. But he remains popular and his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf or PTI, says the cases are politically motivated. Shahid Nawaz, a security officer in eastern Punjab province, said police have arrested more than 4,000 Khan supporters. They include five parliamentarians. Pakistan has sealed off Islamabad with shipping containers and shut down major roads and highways connecting the city with PTI strongholds in Punjab and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. Tit-for-tat teargas shelling between the police and the PTI was reported on the highway bordering Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier on Sunday, Pakistan suspended mobile and internet services “in areas with security concerns.” The government and Interior Ministry posted the announcement on the social media platform X, which is banned in Pakistan. They did not specify the areas, nor did they say how long the suspension would be in place. “Internet and mobile services will continue to operate as usual in the rest of the country,” the posts said. Meanwhile, telecom company Nayatel sent out emails offering customers “a reliable landline service” as a workaround in the areas suffering suspended cellphone service. Khan's supporters rely heavily on social media to demand his release and use messaging platforms like WhatsApp to share information, including details of events. PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram said Khan's wife Bushra Bibi was traveling to Islamabad in a convoy led by the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur. “She cannot leave the party workers on their own,” said Akram. There was a festive mood in Peshawar, with PTI members dancing, drumming and holding up pictures of Khan as cars set off for Islamabad. The government is imposing social media platform bans and targeting VPN services , according to internet advocacy group Netblocks. On Sunday, the group said live metrics showed problems with WhatsApp that were affecting media sharing on the app. The U.S. Embassy issued a security alert for Americans in the capital, encouraging them to avoid large gatherings and warning that even “peaceful gatherings can turn violent.” Last month, authorities suspended the cellphone service in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to thwart a pro-Khan rally. The shutdown disrupted communications and affected everyday services such as banking, ride-hailing and food delivery. The latest crackdown comes on the eve of a visit by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko . Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said authorities have sealed off Islamabad's Red Zone, which houses key government buildings and is the destination for Khan's supporters. “Anyone reaching it will be arrested,” Naqvi told a press conference. He said the security measures were in place to protect residents and property, blaming the PTI for inconveniencing people and businesses. He added that protesters were planning to take the same route as the Belarusian delegation, but that the government had headed off this scenario. Naqvi denied cellphone services were suspended and said only mobile data was affected. Associated Press writers Riaz Khan in Peshawar and Asim Tanveer in Multan contributed to this report. The exit poll results have sparked a debate among leaders of the two major political alliances in the state. While the ruling Mahayuti alliance received the outcomes positively, leaders of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) rejected it. Reacting to the exit polls, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut termed it a fraud and confidently claimed that the MVA would form the government with 160 seats. Raut cited an example of the Lok Sabha election where the exit polls predicted 400 seats to NDA. Even in Haryana the exit polls gave 60 seats to the Congress, he reminded. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis refused to speak on the issue. But he said the Mahayuti has an edge and it was going to form the next government. Soon after the exit polls, the issue of the next chief minister also figured in the reactions by the leaders. The state Congress chief Nana Patole said the Congress-led MVA government will be formed in the state. The trends suggest that Congress will get the maximum number of seats, Patole said. But, his statement was not well received by the allies of the MVA. Sena MP Raut said the chief ministerial face will be decided by the alliance partners. “If the Congress high command has told Nana Patole that he was going to be the chief minister's face then the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the party senior leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra should announce the same,” Raut has reported to have said. Meanwhile, reacting to a question regarding the next CM, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis in Nagpur said there was no discussion about the CM post at the moment. The Mahayuti leaders will sit together and decide after the results are out. BJP candidate from Colaba assembly and State Legislative Assembly speaker Rahul Narvekar on Thursday expressed confidence that Mahayuti would form the government. “Everyone is independent to think whether the exit polls are accurate or not. Everything will be clear on November 23. We will win by double margin this year,” he said. Reacting on the exit poll predictions, MLA Bachhu Kadu of the Prahar Janshakti Party said no government can be formed without his support. The party is part of the third front of which ex MP Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati is also associated. Minister Deepak Kesrakar from the Eknath Shinde led Shiv Sena has said that if needed the Mahayuti can take support of the independent MLAs to form the government. It is said that the senior leaders of the Mahayuti have approached probable winners who have fought the election as an independent. Sanjay Shirsat, spokesperson of the Shinde-led Sena has said that Eknath Shinde will take a decision if denied the CM's post. When he was asked if Shinde decided to ally with Sharad Pawar for the CM's post, Shirsat said whichever decision he may take the MLAs will be with him.HNB General Insurance wins three awards

MARGARET BRENNAN: The 2024 election was historic for several reasons. Among them, the first openly transgender person was elected to the United States Congress. She joins us now from the state she will be representing, Delaware. Democratic Representative-elect Sarah McBride. Welcome to Face the Nation. REP.-ELECT SARAH MCBRIDE: Thank you for having me, Margaret. MARGARET BRENNAN: You know, it's interesting, given how polarized, how angry and divided this country is that people choose to serve and to run. You told my colleague Scott MacFarlane that it was your personal experience as a caregiver for your husband during his bout with terminal cancer that inspired you to run. Do you expect that health care policy will be the focus of your work here? REP.-ELECT MCBRIDE: Well, I certainly am glad to be back here in Delaware after two weeks of orientation and to have the privilege of serving this state that I love in Congress. I ran to bring down costs facing workers, retirees and their families. That means bringing down the cost of health care, but also housing and child care and everyday expenses like gas and groceries. I did run for office after my experience as a caregiver to my husband, Andy, during his battle with cancer. And throughout that experience, while Andy ultimately lost his life, we both knew how lucky we were. We knew how lucky Andy was to have health insurance that would allow him to get care that would hopefully save his life. And we both knew how lucky we were to have flexibility with our employers. That allowed Andy to focus on the full time job of getting care, and me to focus on the full time job of being there by his side to care for him, to love him, to marry him, and to walk him to his passing. And I ran for office because I do not believe that in the wealthiest, most developed nation on earth, that that time and that ability to get care should be a matter of luck. I believe it should be the law of the land. And it's why during my time in the Delaware General Assembly, I passed paid family and medical leave and secured the largest investment in our state's Medicaid program. And I want to do that work in Congress on health care, but also on housing and child care. MARGARET BRENNAN: Paid leave is something that Mr. Trump has paid lip service to, we'll see in the new Congress if it comes up. We see in our CBS polling that 86% of voters feel congressional Democrats should find common ground with Mr. Trump and Republicans. Do you feel you can? REP.-ELECT MCBRIDE: Well, I said throughout this campaign that I will work with anyone who's willing to work with me to help Delawareans, to lower costs facing my constituents. There are opportunities for us to find common ground. But it's also clear that this administration, as it begins to fill its appointments with Project 2025 authors, that a lot of the policies that this president will pursue will likely hurt my constituents and raise prices. And so where I need to fight back, I will. But where I can find common ground, I will certainly seek it. That's what I've done during my time in the General Assembly, where nearly every bill I passed passed with bipartisan support. MARGARET BRENNAN: As you mentioned, you were here for orientation. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was asked about you coming to work and some objections by a female South Carolina Republican representative regarding what bathroom you'd be able to use. Here's what the speaker said. SPEAKER MIKE JOHNSON (ON TAPE): A man is a man, and a woman is a woman, and a man cannot become a woman. That said, I also believe- that's what Scripture teaches, what I just said. But I also believe that we treat everybody with dignity. MARGARET BRENNAN: Do you believe that you are being treated with dignity by your colleagues? REP.-ELECT MCBRIDE: I didn't run for the United States House of Representatives to talk about what bathroom I use. I didn't run to talk about myself. I ran to deliver for Delawareans. And while Republicans in Congress seem focused on bathrooms and trans people, and specifically me, I'm focused on rolling up my sleeves, diving into the details, setting up my office, and beginning the hard work of delivering for Delawareans on the issues that I know keep them up at night. And I look forward to working with any colleague who's ready to work and ready to be serious about the issues that matter because at the end of the day, how I'm being treated does not matter. What matters is how the American people are being treated and whether we're actually focused on the issues that matter to them. MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, some of your fellow congressional Democrats, including Tom Suozzi and Seth Moulton, have also recently spoken about their feelings, looking back at the last election, and said Democrats should be more open about saying whether they object to transgender athletes playing in girls sports. Those were the specific examples they brought up. How would you respond to your soon to be Democratic colleagues on those? Do you understand why some parents, for example, feel uncomfortable or frustrated? REP.-ELECT MCBRIDE: Look, I think this country is still entering into a conversation about who trans people are, the full diversity of the community. And I've had conversations with colleagues in the Democratic caucus already that- that span diversity of thought about how the party should engage on a whole host of issues. But I think we are all united that every single American deserves equal rights. I think we are all united that attempts to attack a vulnerable community are not only mean spirited, but really an attempt to misdirect. Because every single time we hear the incoming administration or Republicans in Congress talk about any vulnerable group in this country, we have to be clear that it is an attempt to distract. It is an attempt to distract from what they are actually doing. Every single time, every single time we hear them say the word trans, look what they're doing with their right hand. Look at what they're doing to pick the pocket of American workers, to fleece seniors by privatizing Social Security and Medicare. Look what they're doing undermining workers. And here's also what we have to be clear about, because I think the last week has been a prime example of this. Every bit of time and energy that is used to divert the attention of federal government to go after trans people is time and energy that is not focused on addressing the cost of living for our constituents. And we have to be clear that there is a real cost for the American worker every time they focus on this. MARGARET BRENNAN: All right. Congresswoman elect, I'm sure we'll be seeing you here in Washington. We'll be right back.

CLEMSON — The days following a college football season have become a time for heartfelt messages, playful quotes, and cryptic emojis. "Let's run it back Clemson," sophomore defensive end T.J. Parker posted to X/formerly Twitter on Dec. 27, with a GIF image of WWE wrestler Roman Reigns screaming "The Big Dog is Back!" "I'll be back," junior linebacker Wade Woodaz posted on Dec. 24, opting for a clip of a stoic Arnold Schwarzenegger delivering his famous line from Terminator. "Run it," sophomore defensive lineman Peter Woods posted more cryptically on his Instagram on Dec. 28, though he paired it with emojis of a Tiger and a upward-trending stock line on his X account. This is very much a sign of the times, particularly with sophomores like Parker and Woods, because it was rarely questioned in previous decades whether a player would return for their junior seasons. But in this era of name, image, and likeness (NIL) pay and the transfer portal, these announcements are big news. It means Clemson — and its NIL collective, 110 Society — has done its work to retain some of the Tigers' top talent. These can be turbulent days and weeks for a college football program. But with every announcement, Clemson's 2025 roster becomes clearer and clearer. And it appears Dabo Swinney is keeping his roster mostly intact. Only a reserve defensive end, sophomore A.J. Hoffler , has joined departures from the receiver room, Troy Stellato and Noble Johnson , and a defensive back, Sherrod Covil Jr. , in hitting the transfer portal. The deadline to enter is Dec. 28. Parker, Woods, and Woodaz have each made clear — each in their own way — they intend to return to Clemson's defense next season. Woodaz was one of the Tigers' biggest risers in 2024, collecting a team-high 82 tackles after totals of 20 and 28, respectively, in his first two seasons. The rising senior will be expected to play a major role in 2025 alongside ACC defensive rookie of the year Sammy Brown . Parker, a second-team All-ACC selection, led Clemson in tackles for loss (19.5), sacks (11), and quarterback pressures (13) this season. He also forced a school-record six fumbles. He could be primed for a leap to the NFL after next season. Woods had more of an uneven 2024 because of injuries and switching positions between defensive tackle and defensive end. But he still produced 8.5 TFLs and three sacks this season, and Woods should return to tackle full-time as a junior with Purdue transfer Will Heldt fortifying the end rotation. Woodaz, Parker, and Woods represent the bulk of the clarifications expected to come from the defensive side of the ball, but now Clemson awaits word from several offensive starters. Quarterback Cade Klubnik made big strides as a junior, which revived his standing a potential NFL draft pick in 2026. But it would be surprising if Klubnik jumped to the pros this year absent a more robust track record of success. He has a chance to throw to rising redshirt junior Antonio Williams and rising sophomores T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. as a senior. Offensive tackle Blake Miller , on the other hand, was a Freshman All-American in 2022 and was named first-team All-ACC in 2024. Miller had allowed just one quarterback hit and no sacks in 485 pass rush snaps heading into the ACC title game, according to Pro Football Focus. The receiver Williams is another name to watch. Even though he missed most of his second season to an ankle injury, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound receiver led the Tigers in receiving yards as a freshman (604) and led all Clemson wideouts in catches (75), yards (904) and touchdowns (11) as a redshirt sophomore. If Klubnik, Miller, and Williams return, Clemson's offense only has to withstand the loss of running back Phil Mafah , tight end Jake Briningstool , and offensive guard Marcus Tate in 2025. Clemson's No. 2 tight end, Olsen Patt-Henry, is heading into his junior season, while Mafah is likely to be replaced by one or both of redshirt freshman David Eziomume and true freshman Gideon Davidson . There are a number of possible successors to Tate, including rising junior Harris Sewell, redshirt junior Collin Sadler, and sophomore Elyjah Thurmon. Simply put, there don't appear to be many holes in Clemson's roster with the fall transfer window set to close. Most of the 2024 Tigers appear ready to "run it back" in 2025.New Delhi: Parteek Chhabra 's 34th birthday celebration turned into a life-altering event when a reckless stunt caught on camera showed him cutting his birthday cake with a firearm. The video went viral on social media, leading to his arrest and a stint in jail in 2020. While behind bars, Chhabra's life took a darker turn. He formed connections with gang members, who later drew him into a world of crime. IPL 2025 mega auction IPL Auction 2025: Who got whom IPL 2025 Auction: Updated Full Team Squads Upon his release, the garment businessman became involved in financing the illicit activities of northeast Delhi gangs. On Nov 22, police received specific information about Chhabra's presence in the Shastri Park area with associates. DCP (crime branch) Vikram Singh said, "Acting on this lead, a team was deployed to the location, and after monitoring and a coordinated raid, he was apprehended." During the operation, a country-made pistol and a live cartridge were seized, further implicating him in illegal activities. Chhabra, a 10th-grade graduate, initially worked in the garment business, selling products online to earn a living. His criminal journey began during his 2020 incarceration under the Arms Act. "It was in jail that he first encountered members of the ‘Chhenu Gang', particularly Sabbir, also known as Popa Pahalwan. After his release, he began arranging funds for the gang," said a senior police officer. Chhabra operated an illegal satta (gambling) business to generate funds for the gang's activities. "The weapon recovered during his arrest is believed to have been provided by Sabbir through another associate, Bharat, alias Noni, from northeast Delhi," the officer added. Investigators discovered that Chhabra was actively evading arrest and staying in contact with other criminals to support the gang's operations. Police tracked his involvement in financing gang-related activities through intelligence and technical surveillance.
