Did Arizona’s previously punchless rushing attack experience a breakthrough in the second half against Houston last week? The Wildcats certainly hope so. Because if they’re to have any shot to upset TCU on Saturday, they’ll need to replicate their performance from the final 30 minutes against the Cougars. Arizona rushed for 107 yards after halftime. That equaled the Wildcats’ total vs. Colorado on Oct. 19 and exceeded their combined output from the previous two games (83 yards vs. West Virginia and UCF). Arizona’s overall total of 122 rushing yards also reversed a downward trend — fewer rushing yards each week after a 161-yard performance at Utah on Sept. 28. “I thought that was great,” UA coach Brent Brennan said. “The bye week (gave) us some time to dive into some fundamental football. And that (is) such a part of the run game — blocking, stepping with the right foot, going to the right guy ... pad level.” Arizona still ranks 13th in the 16-team Big 12 Conference at 115.7 rushing yards per game — “I think we all agree that it hasn't been consistent or efficient enough,” Brennan said — and there are multiple reasons for that. It would be the only game Croskey-Merritt would play for the Wildcats. We’ll examine all aspects of the Wildcats’ run game in this week’s “Cats Stats.” Personnel changes Any discussion of Arizona’s ground game has to begin with the players who are no longer a part of it. Jonah Coleman, DJ Williams and Michael Wiley accounted for 1,554 of the Wildcats’ 1,816 rushing yards last season, or 85.6%. Coleman transferred to Washington; Williams and Wiley ran out of eligibility. Arizona assembled a new tailback corps featuring transfers Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Quali Conley and Kedrick Reescano. Croskey-Merritt rushed for 1,190 yards and 17 touchdowns last season at New Mexico. But his season ended after just one game because of an eligibility issue that never was resolved. He was trending toward becoming the Wildcats’ lead back, rushing for 106 yards and a touchdown on just 13 carries vs. UNM in the season opener. With holdover Rayshon Luke electing to redshirt after making four appearances, Arizona essentially became a two-back attack led by Conley and Reescano. Conley, a senior, followed the staff here from San Jose State, where he rushed for 842 yards last season. Reescano, a sophomore, played exclusively on special teams as a freshman at Ole Miss. “A lot of people want to try to figure out who we don't have, who's missing, all the different moving parts,” UA running backs coach Alonzo Carter said. “We don't flinch. They're a tight group of guys. “You got a guy like Quali that, if you've been at practice, you'll see that two or three of those days, he's very limited, and he comes out there and gives you 100%. You got a guy like Kedrick, the young guy, (who) has had to step it up and play more than anticipated. Production so far Conley ranks 11th in the Big 12 — which is loaded with quality running backs — with 677 yards. His average per carry of 5.3 yards ranks 14th among qualifiers. Conley has gained a lot of those yards on his own, underscoring Arizona’s offensive line struggles. He ranks fifth in the Big 12 with an average of 4.02 yards after contact per rushing attempt, according to Pro Football Focus (minimum 51 carries). The latter exceeds what Wiley (3.44) and Williams (2.87) were able to do last season — but is well shy of Coleman’s mark of 5.09, which was the best in the Pac-12 by a full yard. Reescano is averaging 3.48 yards after contact per attempt, which ranks 15th in the Big 12. He has forced 20 missed tackles in just 63 total carries, per PFF. On a per-carry basis, Reescano is comparable (31.7%) to the league’s best tackle breakers such as ASU’s Cam Skattebo (33.1%) and UCF’s RJ Harvey (30.8%). Conley has forced a missed tackle on 22.8% of his rushes (29 of 127). Overall, Arizona’s rushing production isn’t as far off last year’s output as you might think. The raw numbers show a drop of 24 yards per game and .51 per carry. If you take out sacks — which count toward teams’ net rushing totals in college football — those gaps shrink to 18.6 yards per game and .22 per carry. Commitment issues After adjusting for sacks, Arizona is averaging just 2.4 fewer carries per game than a year ago. That’s a surprisingly small difference considering how often the 2024 Wildcats have been playing from behind compared to last year’s squad. The 2023 Cats had 208 carries with the lead, or 16 per game, according to CFBStats.com . The ’24 club has 97 carries with the lead, or 9.7 per game. The difference in carries with a deficit of 15-plus points illustrates the divergent paths these past two UA teams have taken. Last year’s squad had just four carries with a deficit that large; this year’s has 67. The Houston game presented a rare opportunity to play with a multiple-score lead. Conley’s 13-yard touchdown reception less than five minutes into the second half put Arizona ahead 17-3. The Wildcats had 21 rushing attempts after halftime — compared to 16 passing attempts. Arizona finished with 36 rushing attempts (a season high) and 35 passing attempts, marking just the third time this year the Wildcats have had more of the former. San Jose State never ranked in the top half of the Mountain West Conference in rushing attempts during Brennan’s seven seasons there. The Spartans’ highest ranking in that category was seventh (2020), and they finished last or next-to-last four times. Arizona has a different offensive coordinator, but those numbers at least hint at Brennan’s overall offensive philosophy. TCU’s vulnerability If the Horned Frogs are susceptible anywhere on defense it’s in the run game. TCU ranks 14th in the Big 12 in rushing defense (172.1 yards per game) compared to third in passing defense (186.5). If you exclude sacks, the Horned Frogs yield 188.8 rushing yards per game and 4.96 per carry. Six teams have rushed for at least 167 yards against TCU, and four have topped 200: UCF, SMU, Houston and Baylor. The Horned Frogs are 2-4 when allowing 167 or more rushing yards. TCU has the most prolific passing offense in the Big 12 and would like nothing more than to turn this game into a Texas shootout. Arizona’s chances of competing will improve substantially if the Wildcats can control the ball by running it like they did in the second half vs. Houston. Sports Reporter/ColumnistSYRACUSE (AP) — Kyle McCord threw for a career-high 470 yards with two touchdowns to lead Syracuse to a 31-24 win over UConn on Saturday. The win gives the Orange (8-3) their first eight-win regular season since 2018, and third since 2000. “We knew they would play all the way through the fourth quarter, and we thought it’d be a fourth-quarter game,” Syracuse coach Fran Brown said. “So, it’s just what we talked about the entire week and we didn’t take it lightly.” McCord completed 37-of-47 passes for his first 400-yard game this season. He opened the game with a 77-yard touchdown drive, spanning two plays in 50 seconds. The touchdown came on a 22-yard pass to Oronde Gadsden. McCord broke Syracuse’s all-time record for single-season passing yards with 4:12 remaining in the first half. He needed 273 yards to pass Nassib, and finished the game against the Huskies with 3,946 passing yards. The former quarterback set his record in 2012, recording 3,749 passing yards during his senior year. McCord also tied Nassib’s record for single-season touchdown passes with 26, with his second touchdown pass on the same play as the yardage record. “I got a standard of what the quarterback needs to look like being here,” Brown said. "Not necessarily statistically and all those things, because that’s hard, but just in reference to how you prepare.” The Orange missed two field goals and had two touchdowns called back that allowed the Huskies offense a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter. After a 2-yard passing touchdown by quarterback Joe Fagnano left UConn trailing back one score, Syracuse recovered the Huskies’ onside kick attempt to end the game. UConn (7-4) will finish its season without a Power Four win after staying within two touchdowns of the Orange for all 60 minutes. The Huskies have ended each of their four Power Four games within one score of their opponent. “They’re disappointed as hell, and they should be,” UConn coach Jim Mora said. “But we have to get over that, and we have to figure out what we can do better and apply those lessons going forward and prepare to get a win next week.” Cam Edwards led UConn on the ground with 87 rushing yards, including a 71-yard touchdown dash in the first quarter. Mexico City, Nov 23 (AP) Mexico has been taking a bashing lately for allegedly serving as a conduit for Chinese parts and products into North America, and officials here are afraid a re-elected Donald Trump or politically struggling Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could try to leave their country out of the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement. Mexico's ruling Morena party is so afraid of losing the trade deal that President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday the government has gone on a campaign to get companies to replace Chinese parts with locally made ones. “We have a plan with the aim of substituting these imports that come from China, and producing the majority of them in Mexico, either with Mexican companies or primarily North American companies,” Sheinbaum said. While Sheinbaum claimed Mexico had been working on that effort since the 2021 global supply chain crisis — when factories around the world were stalled by a lack of parts and particularly computer chips from Asia — it appears to be an uphill battle. Even the United States has faced big challenges in moving chip production back home despite billions in subsidies and incentives. Mexico gained tens of thousands of jobs when US and foreign automakers moved their plants to Mexico under the free trade pact to take advantage of much lower wages. But the idea that Chinese parts — or even whole cars — could be piggybacking on that arrangement to further hollow out the US auto industry has enraged some people north of the border. So Mexico is scrambling with private companies to get them to move parts production here. “Next year, God willing, we are going to start making microchips in Mexico,” Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said on Thursday. “Of course they're not yet the most advanced chips, but we are going to start producing them here.” Mexico's nationalistic ruling party, which is normally very resistant to being seen as bending to US demands, is scrambling in other ways, too. The ruling party is in the process of eliminating a half-dozen independent regulatory and oversight agencies that were established by former presidents. That includes the anti-monopoly, transparency and energy regulatory bodies. Together with reforms that will make all judges stand for election in Mexico, that has sparked concern in the US and Canada. Countries are required under the agreement to have some independent agencies, in part to protect foreign investors. For example, they could prevent a government from approving a monopoly for a state-owned company that could force competitors out of the market. So ruling-party legislators are actually re-writing the proposed laws to exactly mimic the minimum accepted requirements under the trade accord. “What is being done is to create a reform so that its almost exactly equal to what exists in the United States, so we can clear that up,” Ebrard said. It's all part of a very legalistic defence of the trade accord, signed in 2018 and approved in 2019. Mexico hopes the rules of the agreement would prevent the US or Canada from simply walking away when the trade pact comes up for review in 2026. Experts agree, saying that totally abandoning the accord is unlikely. Gabriela Siller, director of economic analysis of the financial group Banco Base notes that if a country is dissatisfied with the trade agreement during the periodic reviews, like in 2026, there is a clause in the pact that says they can ask for a review each year to work out a solution, and keep doing that for a decade while the agreement remains in force. “That is, they wouldn't be able to get out until 2036,” Siller said. “I think they will play hardball with Mexico in the 2026 review.” Like any marriage, when the pact no longer works for one party, it may still drag on for years but it's death by a thousand cuts. C.J. Mahoney. who served as deputy US trade representative in Trump's first administration, said in a talk for the Texas-based Baker Institute in September that the United States probably wouldn't end the trade agreement. But with growingly vocal critics of the pact it could hold up renewing it for years. “The costs of not renewing immediately are actually quite relatively low,” Mahoney said. “I think the inclination to just kick the can down the road will be pretty strong.” Because many companies won't make big investments in production facilities without certainty, that could be a serious if not fatal blow to the pact. How much does Mexico actually buy from China? Mexican officials say they have fewer imports of Chinese parts and products than the United States does. But given the enormous size difference between the two countries' economies, it is a true but weak argument. In July, the US imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum shipped from Mexico that were made elsewhere, in an attempt to stop China from avoiding import taxes by routing goods through Mexico. It includes a 25 per cent tariff on steel not melted or poured in Mexico and a 10 per cent tariff on aluminum. Sen. Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat, has called for stopping Mexican steel imports, saying “the alarming rise in Chinese steel and aluminum coming into the country through Mexico ... is unsustainable and a threat to American jobs, as well as our economy and national security". In the end, Mexico may be forced to crack down on Chinese imports, but it won't be easy. “Reducing the dependence on Chinese imports is not going to be achieved in the short or medium term," said José María Ramos, a professor of public administration at the Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Tijuana. Sampson scored on a 14-yard TD run early in the second quarter for the game's first points to deliver his 22nd TD of tje season to break the Tennessee single-season mark set by Gene McEvers in 1929. Iamaleava was 15 of 20 for 173 yards for Tennessee (9-2), while Bru McCoy caught a pair of TD passes and Squirrel White and Ethan Davis each had a TD reception. Tennessee moved its all-time record to 2-0 against the Miners, also having blanked the Conference USA school 24-0 in 2018. No. 11 Tennessee crushes UTEP to enhance CFP chancesA lumber mill is in ruins following a fire east of Wingham, Ont. North Huron Fire Chief Chad Kregar said fire crews were called to the scene around 10:30 a.m. Friday after people working in the lumber mill noticed smoke coming from the attic of the converted barn. Crews from North Huron, South Bruce, Lucknow, and Huron East were called in to assist battling the blaze and trucking water to the scene, which was on Belmore Line, near Salem Line. No one was injured in the blaze, but the Amish-operated lumber mill was levelled by the blaze. Neighbours on horse and buggy could be seen gathered at the scene. “Crews did a great job battling the fire today. It’s safe to say it’s under control now,” said Kregar. Kregar said the biggest challenges fighting the fire were the cold temperatures and slippery road conditions while trucking water to the scene. Kregar said the fire is not considered suspicious. Casey’s concession comes more than two weeks after Election Day, as a grindingly slow ballot-counting process became a spectacle of hours-long election board meetings, social media outrage, lawsuits and accusations that some county officials were openly flouting the law. Republicans claimed that Democrats were trying to steal McCormick’s seat by counting “illegal votes.” Casey’s campaign accused of Republicans of trying to block enough votes to prevent him from pulling ahead and winning. , Casey said he just called McCormick to congratulate him. “As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last,” Casey said.
