AP Trending SummaryBrief at 12:19 p.m. ESTCHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Ten yards into a scramble, Patrick Mahomes could have easily slid for a first down or simply ducked out of bounds and moved on to the next play. Instead, the three-time Super Bowl MVP cut back inside and raced another 23 yards up the field, helping to set up Spencer Schrader's 31-yard field goal as time expired as the Chiefs held on to beat the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. “At that point, yards are more important than getting out of bounds,” Mahomes said. “With three timeouts, I just tried to just cut through and Justin Watson had a great block and was able to get down the field and get out of bounds.” The game-winning drive was the 21st of Mahomes' career, and the Chiefs won a game decided in the final seconds for the fifth time this season. Eight of the Chiefs' wins have come by one-score margins. “You always want to have some blowouts and be a little calmer in the fourth quarter, but I've always said it could be a good thing when you get to the playoffs later in the season knowing that you have been in those moments before, and knowing how to attack it play by play not making it too big of a moment,” Mahomes said. Then he smiled and said: “But I would say this more than anybody, I would love to win a game not by the very last play.” Mahomes completed 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in his first game at Bank of America Stadium and ran for 60 yards — including 33 on that last-minute play — as the Chiefs (10-1) scored on six of their eight possessions. Noah Gray caught four passes for 66 yards and scored two touchdowns for the second straight week, and DeAndre Hopkins also found the end zone for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Kareem Hunt ran for 68 yards on 16 carries and caught three passes for 19 yards. Bryce Young played well for Carolina (3-8), finishing 21 of 35 for 262 yards and a touchdown while leading the Panthers back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on Chuba Hubbard's 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion with 1:46 remaining. Panthers coach Dave Canales, who benched Young earlier this season for veteran Andy Dalton, said last year's No. 1 overall draft pick “absolutely” will remain the team's starting QB next week. That's a break from Canales' recent pattern of waiting a few days to name a starter. “Bryce is certainly making the most of his opportunities,” Canales said. “And he is making a statement to all of us. Showing us he can make plays in critical areas. He did a great job extending today.” Said Young: “For me, I just want to focus on what I can control. Regardless, I always have the same mindset and preparation, wanting to be better throughout the week. I am definitely grateful for confidence.” Still, there is room for improvement. The Panthers moved the ball well but struggled in the red zone, resulting in field goals of 30, 32, 29 and 33 yards for Eddy Pineiro, the most accurate kicker in NFL history. The Chiefs wasted no time setting the tone as Samaje Perine returned the opening kickoff 56 yards and Mahomes found Gray for a 35-yard touchdown strike on the third play of scrimmage for a 7-0 lead. Gray went nine games without a TD catch before hauling in two last week against Buffalo. His 11-yard score late in the second quarter gave him two more against the Panthers . Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes' poise but said he was concerned about his team's nine penalties for 90 yards. Kansas City's Travis Kelce had six catches for 62 yards and moved into third place in career yards receiving by a tight end. He ranks behind only Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten. However, Kelce failed to find the end zone for the ninth time in 11 games this season. Running back Jonathan Brooks made his NFL debut for Carolina, but the second-round pick was limited to 7 yards on two carries. Panthers: Rookie TE Ja'Tavion Sanders was taken to a hospital, where he was evaluated for a neck injury and released . He landed awkwardly on his head after making a catch near the end of the second quarter. Chiefs: Host Las Vegas on Friday. Panthers: Host Tampa Bay next Sunday. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL
NEW DELHI, Nov 23 — Indian prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju broke new ground to reach the World Chess Championship and the 18-year-old “Friends” fan is now hot favourite to win the title and make more history. Gukesh will be the youngest player to take home the undisputed world crown if he beats reigning champion Ding Liren of China in Singapore from November 25. Most pundits and players believe Gukesh will prevail against the 32-year-old Ding, who has not won a game in the classical format since January. The modest and bearded Gukesh is having none of it. “I don’t believe in predictions and who are the favourites,” he told reporters ahead of the title match, where there is a total prize fund of US$2.5 million. “I’m just focusing on the process and I try to just be at my best every day and play a good game. “I just want to enjoy the experience.” Gukesh became India’s youngest grandmaster aged 12 years, seven months and 17 days, and among the youngest in the history of the game. Even Magnus Carlsen, the most recognisable current player in chess and a five-time world champion, was older. If he beats Ding in the best of 14 games, Gukesh will trump the legendary Garry Kasparov, who was 22 when he became world champion in 1985. In public Gukesh often appears shy and reserved. He was absent from the Bermuda party while starring for India at this year’s Chess Olympiad in Budapest — the do is a decades-old tradition where contestants party at a nightclub in the host city. But after India finished with two gold medals, Gukesh surprised fans accustomed to his serious persona by posting a video of himself dancing exuberantly to a popular Tamil song clad in traditional clothing. Though he spends much of his time practising the game, Gukesh recently confessed to a love of the hit television sitcom “Friends”. When competing he usually wears a tilak — a smattering of white ash on his forehead in deference to his Hindu faith — to go with his suit. In 2022, Gukesh beat US number one Fabiano Caruana at the Chess Olympiad and later that year triumphed over Carlsen. He reached the world championship by becoming the youngest winner of the prestigious Candidates Tournament in April. Indian chess icon and five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand has played a mentor’s role in Gukesh’s journey and hailed the teenager as his successor. “Gukesh is a very level-headed boy,” the 54-year-old Anand told broadcaster NDTV. “I am very, very proud that he has managed this phenomenal achievement. In a way I feel like I have managed to pass on the baton.” ‘Like a seasoned player’ Born to a doctor father and microbiologist mother, Gukesh started playing chess aged seven. His father Rajnikanth took him to watch Anand play Carlsen in a world championship match in his hometown Chennai in November 2013. The world championship in Singapore is being compared by some in India to the classic showdown between the American Bobby Fischer and Soviet great Boris Spassky at the height of the Cold War in 1972. Ties between nuclear-armed neighbours China and India are frequently tense. Ding has been impressed by his teenage opponent’s maturity. “He plays like a seasoned player despite his young age,” said Ding, who since becoming world champion last year has suffered depression and took a nine-month break from competitive chess. Carlsen makes the young Indian “a significant favourite, and if he strikes first he will win the match without any trouble”, the Norwegian told FIDE, the International Chess Federation. “However, the longer it goes without a decisive game, the better it is for Ding Liren because he has the ability, but he doesn’t have the confidence.” — AFPNEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — A New Rochelle Police lieutenant was accused of planting drugs to try to justify an arrest, but we learned late Friday afternoon that he will not be indicted by a grand jury. Now, the man he arrested wants the Department of Justice to take a look at the body camera video, which he shared with CBS News New York investigative reporter Tim McNicholas. New Rochelle Police Lt. Sean Kane's body camera shows him reach behind a tire on a blue SUV on May 29, then return to his car and tell his colleagues he'd found drugs. "You said you found the drugs upper lot, 361 Main?" someone asks over the police radio. "Affirmative," Kane says. You then see Kane holding a baggie with a white substance. But minutes earlier, before the lieutenant approached the blue SUV, he was already holding a similar-looking bag. Ivin Harper says Kane planted the drugs to justify police arresting him. "I was devastated. It ruined my career. It shattered, it shattered everything," Harper said. It all happened as other officers searched for Harper, who says he saw Kane earlier and ran due to past negative interactions with him. Harper says he'd never seen the drugs, and the charges against him were later dropped. He was hoping Kane would be charged, but now a grand jury has reached a "no true bill" decision, meaning they don't feel there is enough evidence to indict Kane. "It was disappointing, and it drained me for a second, hearing it, you know, because expecting it is one thing from actually hearing it," Harper said. Harper, a fitness trainer and actor, says he's now moved to Denver to avoid Kane and other New Rochelle cops. He says he is suing Kane and the City of New Rochelle. "I would like the DOJ to take a peek at this because I have no confidence in the investigation that took place," he said. Kane's attorney sent CBS News New York the following statement: "For the past several months, Lieutenant Sean Kane has stood silently by while his name and reputation have been destroyed on social media and in the press. "Unfortunately, to preserve the integrity of a narcotics investigation in its entirety, Lt. Kane was unable to respond until a full and thorough investigation was completed. "That time is now. "A Westchester County grand jury, convened by District Attorney Mimi Rocah, heard the sworn testimony of, among other witnesses, Lieutenant Kane. The grand jurors were provided with all evidence relevant to the charges filed against Ivin Harper and rightly concluded that Lt. Kane did nothing wrong. "To the contrary, Lt. Kane's lawful and necessary actions - which have been badly mischaracterized on social media - furthered the investigation of a known narcotics dealer who was actively pushing poison into the streets of New Rochelle. "Mr. Harper's protestations of innocence, extensively published via social media, are unequivocally and provably untrue. "The grand jury's determination was in all respects correct and consistent with the known and verifiable facts of this incident. "We are grateful that the members of the grand jury took the time to listen and hear the evidence, and arrive at the correct conclusion." The district attorney released the following statement Friday: "Upon the August referral of misconduct allegations against Lt. Sean Kane to my Office by New Rochelle Police Department Internal Affairs, the Public Integrity and Law Enforcement Integrity Bureau launched an immediate investigation. "Prosecutors presented evidence to a Westchester County grand jury, which decided Thursday not to indict Lt. Kane. "Under state law, grand jury proceedings are confidential. "We thank the NRPD for referring the case to my Office and working closely with us to do our part on this case. "We respect the process and thank the Grand Jury for their service on this matter." Kane was suspended with pay after Harper's arrest. CBS News New York reached out to the department to ask what his current status is and we're waiting to hear back. Tim McNicholas is a reporter for CBS News New York. He joined the team in September 2022 after working in Chicago, Indianapolis, Toledo and Hastings, Nebraska.

Government Urged to Ban Chinese LiDAR Sensors From US Weapons, Critical SectorsThe Biden administration withdrew two major student loan forgiveness plans Friday, just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House. Here's a look at what it means for borrowers and student loan service providers. The Details: The Education Department posted notices in the Federal Register that it was withdrawing two proposals that could have reduced student loan debt for millions of borrowers, including those with financial hardship and those who have been in repayment for years, CNBC reported. Read Next: Waymo’s Autonomous Vehicles Are Safer Than Human Drivers: Report The department wrote that it was withdrawing the proposed rules due to "operational challenges in implementing the proposals." It also said it would focus its resources on "helping at-risk borrowers return to repayment successfully" as the administration prepares to leave office in the next month. "The Biden administration knew that the proposals for broad student loan forgiveness would have been thwarted by the Trump administration," higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz told CNBC. What Else: Also on Friday, the Department of Education announced another $4.28 billion in loan forgiveness for nearly 55,000 public service workers which brought the total amount of student loan forgiveness under the Biden administration to $180 billion. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona emphasized the administration's commitment to student loan relief for public service workers in a statement Friday. "Four years ago, the Biden-Harris Administration made a pledge to America’s teachers, service members, nurses, first responders, and other public servants that we would fix the broken Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and I’m proud to say that we delivered," Cardona said. Loan Servicers: The administration's withdrawal of the additional loan forgiveness proposals is potentially a positive development for student loan providers including SoFi Technologies, Inc. SOFI , Navient Corp. NAVI and SLM Corp. SLM Student loan providers would have lost revenue if Biden's student loan forgiveness plans had gone through. Additionally, the rollout of forgiveness programs often requires servicers to update systems, retrain staff and manage complex transitions, all of which would increase expenses.
