HCST students deserve better As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hudson County Schools of Technology for nearly 10 years, I witnessed first-hand what can be accomplished when we properly manage and invest in our public schools, and what can happen when we allow them to be negatively impacted by politics. Under the visionary leadership of former Superintendent Frank Gargiulo, HCST flourished and became one of the most highly regarded county vocational districts in the entire state. Beyond running two excellent and academically rigorous high school programs, Superintendent Gargiulo ensured that HCST provided exemplary services to the community through the district’s renowned alternative schools for at-risk youth, adult high school and other programs designed to help Hudson County residents succeed. The district was recognized with many prestigious awards and was universally known as a place where students would receive a truly excellent education. Unfortunately, that formerly sterling reputation has now been tarnished not only by scandals involving school district leadership, but by a reduction in important programs and in reduced academic performance. Services that made a positive impact on the community like KAS Prep, Career Academy and the Adult High School were discontinued, leaving vulnerable residents with fewer educational options. Even the district’s flagship schools have suffered — case in point, High Tech High School was ranked as the No. 12 public high school in America in 2015 under Superintendent Gargiulo’s leadership, and this year was ranked No. 387 by Niche. Our students clearly deserve better than this. But instead of investing in the kinds of programs that flourished in the past, the district’s current leadership at the county level is more interested in settling scores and playing politics. This lack of quality leadership has created a dark cloud in the district that is negatively impacting employee morale and performance, which then hurts students. It’s time for a qualified, visionary new superintendent to put HCST back on the right path by showing the kind of dedication to quality education and community service that Frank Gargiulo always lived by, but with the current leadership situation on the board and at the county, I am not hopeful that this will be the case. Jerry Burke, Howell Letter writer will be missed This writer is very saddened to see our Jersey Journal cease its print form this February 2025. And with it, so many fond memories in its 156-year history go along with it. Hudson County and Jersey City are no ordinary places, their politics speak volumes and their place in history will never be denied. In its prime The Jersey Journal was the voice of the people of Hudson County and footprint of our collective memory. But most important I’d like to acknowledge a writer who for some 50+ years has given us a broad prospective of life in Jersey City and news of the day that affected all of us. That person is prolific letters to the editor writer John Di Genio of Jersey City, who, without a doubt, wrote eventful and knowledgeable articles that were well thought out and informed the people of his thoughts and ideas without any fanfare. The editorial section of the paper printed hundreds of his letters because of John’s keen insight into every article he wrote. I also had the honor to co-write many of these articles; it was an honor to be a co-pilot and express our views — some controversial and many the readers would agree on. So, in closing, I’d like to publicly thank John and bid The Jersey Journal a fond adieu. I’m so proud of being part of the grand history of this newspaper. Improvements to Transit Windsor's garage are coming. But the union warns it's hard to keep buses on the roadEven as massive improvements are on the way for Windsor's transit garage, the union representing drivers and mechanics says equipment failures mean their members are having trouble keeping buses on the road and on time. But the City of Windsor says the union's claims aren't true, and no one will be left out in the cold. "They're the frontline people when the passengers get on and they're angry because they've been waiting out in the cold and some buses aren't showing up," said Manny Sforza, the international vice-president of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), which represents Windsor workers through Local 616. "When they get on the bus, the bus is really crowded because ridership is up. Ridership revenue for Windsor Transit's cross-border tunnel bus is $566K in the hole Overtime, portable hoists solve Transit Windsor service interruptions as city warns of costly long-term fix "The members just kept telling us the general public gets on and they're angry at us because that's the first person they see and they believe it's the operator's fault. Our members are really tired of taking the brunt of the frustration and the anger." Riders told CBC Windsor they had noticed people being rude to drivers in their daily travels. "It happens from time to time. Someone's angry about having to pay their fare, about what they can and can't bring on the bus. It all depends," said Zander Kelly, who says he rides the bus at least once or twice a week. The Transit Windsor sign on the downtown bus terminal. (Dalson Chen/CBC) But another rider says he feels individuals have to do more to use the transit system well. "I've heard people complain, 'Well, buses take forever,' Well, you're not checking your app. You're not putting in the effort," said AJ Szwed. "You know, it's just not gonna fall in your lap, right?" This week, the ATU said that three more of the hoists used to lift buses for repair are out of service. Combined with the six hoists already out of service, an issue the union says goes back a couple of years, and the hoist for transit support vehicles also not working, there are just five hoists to service 117 buses. With fewer buses able to be repaired, that means fewer buses on the street. That means cancelled routes and late or overcrowded buses, the union says. But the City of Windsor says that's not the case: 14 maintenance bays are available. And, a statement says, the city has invested in mobile lift technology. "The city has made continued investments in the maintenance facilities at Transit Windsor, including new state-of-the-art mobile hoists and associated lifting devices," a statement read. "These new lifting devices have resulted in improved efficiency, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness, and have moved Transit Windsor away from reliance on outdated technology to meet the current industry standard of mobile lifts." The union representing Transit Windsor drivers says the city has brought in mobile hoists, but some are still in shrink wrap and not in use. The city says 14 maintenance bays are available and that mobile lifts are the current industry standard. (Submitted by Manny Sforza) Sforza acknowledges that temporary hoists have been brought in. But those, he says, are inefficient and make some repairs more challenging, because they lift the bus by its wheels instead of the axles. Some of those hoists, he said, remain on pallets and shrink wrapped. And a representative from the hoist company recently met with their members. "[The representative] himself confirmed some health and safety concerns that our members have been bringing up," Sforza said. "They said — this is the hoist company — it's unsafe to do certain tasks on those temporary hoists. "So that is actually making this problem even more complicated." The city has recently awarded an initial request for proposals worth about $35 million for renovations and repairs to the Transit Windsor garage, with work expected to be complete by spring 2027 without service interruptions. Transit Windsor leader selected as new Lakeshore CAO Bus shortage at Transit Windsor leaving some riders to wait twice as long The city has also hired a consultant, to the tune of about $2.4 million to oversee and design the project. The hoist issue came up during the latest round of contract negotiations with the city earlier this year Earlier this year, the then-executive director of Transit Windsor said that between 80 and 90 of the fleet's 117 buses need daily service. "Our members do a great job, but they just don't have the tools to provide the reliable and efficient transit to the taxpayers of City of Windsor," Sforza said. "It's just unbelievable that we're even in this situation."
By FATIMA HUSSEIN WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday threatened 100% tariffs against a bloc of nine nations if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar. His threat was directed at countries in the so-called BRIC alliance, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have applied to become members and several other countries have expressed interest in joining. While the U.S. dollar is by far the most-used currency in global business and has survived past challenges to its preeminence, members of the alliance and other developing nations say they are fed up with America’s dominance of the global financial system . The dollar represents roughly 58% of the world’s foreign exchange reserves, according to the IMF and major commodities like oil are still primarily bought and sold using dollars. The dollar’s dominance is threatened, however, with BRICS’ growing share of GDP and the alliance’s intent to trade in non-dollar currencies — a process known as de-dollarization. Trump, in a Truth Social post, said: “We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy.” At a summit of BRIC nations in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. of “weaponizing” the dollar and described it as a “big mistake.” “It’s not us who refuse to use the dollar,” Putin said at the time. “But if they don’t let us work, what can we do? We are forced to search for alternatives.” Russia has specifically pushed for the creation of a new payment system that would offer an alternative to the global bank messaging network, SWIFT, and allow Moscow to dodge Western sanctions and trade with partners. Trump said there is “no chance” BRIC will replace the U.S. dollar in global trade and any country that tries to make that happen “should wave goodbye to America.” Research shows that the U.S. dollar’s role as the primary global reserve currency is not threatened in the near future. An Atlantic Council model that assesses the dollar’s place as the primary global reserve currency states the dollar is “secure in the near and medium term” and continues to dominate other currencies. Trump’s latest tariff threat comes after he threatened to slap 25% tariffs on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tax on goods from China, as a way to force the countries to do more to halt the flow of illegal immigration and drugs into the U.S. He has since held a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who said Thursday she is confident that a tariff war with the United States can be averted. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returned home Saturday after meeting Trump, without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on Canada.

“Intimidation” and “threats” on new director’s first day at National Gallery
Walmart employees have begun to wear body cameras as concerns about crime and shoplifting are on the rise. The Arkansas-based retail giant recently began a pilot test involving multiple stores in the Dallas area to address confrontations with unruly customers, a person familiar with the initiative told The Post. “While we don’t talk about the specifics of our security measures, we are always looking at new and innovative technology used across the retail industry,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. “This is a pilot we are testing in one market, and we will evaluate the results before making any longer-term decisions.” The devices were spotted at a store in Denton, Texas where employees were sporting the cameras while they checked customers’ receipts, according to a report by CNBC. Walmart declined to say how many stores are participating in the program or to share any findings about the test. Other retailers use body cameras to prevent theft and violent incidents , which has spiked over the past several years as a rash of smash and grab incidents have gripped the retail industry from grocery stores to department stores and luxury boutiques. The high incidence of these crimes has resulted in expensive and popular merchandise, including toothpaste, clothing detergent and toiletries being locked up and requiring the assistance of a store clerk. Walmart staff were instructed on how to use the cameras, according to CNBC, which cited an online forum for Walmart employees and customers. Walmart employees are advised to “record an event if an interaction with a customer is escalating,” and to remove the cameras in employee break areas and bathrooms, according to a Walmart document entitled “Providing customers service while creating a safer environment,” cited by CNBC. Employees are told to log any incidents in the “ethics and compliance” app. The Walmart initiative comes as retailers struggle with how to handle aggressive customers who may have mental health issues or are trying to steal merchandise. This year, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the Retail Worker Safety Act, which will require merchants with 50 or more employees to install panic buttons that will alert law enforcement to come to the store immediately. The panic buttons will be required by Jan. 2027. It’s the first such law in the U.S. and Walmart opposed it arguing that it would result in false alarms. Other retail experts have argued that body cameras are effective deterrents to bad behavior. “Many of these body-worn cameras have reverse view monitors on them so ... there’s a little video screen that you actually see yourself on camera,” David Johnston, vice president of asset protection for the National Retail Federation told CNBC. “That in itself can be a very big deterrent. The moment that you see yourself is probably [when] you’re going to change your behavior, and that’s what I think the use of a body-worn camera can do.”How to Watch Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Games – Sunday, December 1Representatives will meet with global partners to share market insights and discuss the company's unique supply chain solutions HOUSTON , Dec. 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Smith , a leading global distributor of electronic components and semiconductors, today announces its attendance at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada .
