Longtime USA Today Sports Columnist Passes Away At 82
A lead organisation monitoring for food crises around the world withdrew a new report this week warning of imminent famine in north Gaza under what it called Israel’s “near-total blockade,” after the US asked for its retraction, US officials told Associated Press. The move follows public criticism of the report from the US ambassador to Israel. The rare public dispute drew accusations from prominent aid and human-rights figures that the work of the US-funded Famine Early Warning System Network, meant to reflect the data-driven analysis of unbiased international experts, has been tainted by politics. US ambassador to Israel Jacob Lew earlier this week called the warning by the internationally recognised group inaccurate and “irresponsible”. Lew and the US Agency for International Development, which funds the monitoring group, both said the findings failed to properly account for rapidly changing circumstances in north Gaza. “We work day and night with the UN and our Israeli partners to meet humanitarian needs – which are great – and relying on inaccurate data is irresponsible,” Lew said on Tuesday. His absurdist and irreverent sense of humour is an uneasy fit with the canon of his native literature. As he noted, humour was “rare in literature, and rarest of all in German literature. And in the histories of German literature, pride is taken in that very fact”. His comic sense would have fitted comfortably into a Flann O’Brien column. Writing at the time of the 200th anniversary of Goethe’s birth in 1949, he postulated that there would be a Goethe-Derby among German universities producing articles including “Goethe and the Control of Clothes Moths”; “Goethe’s Disapproval of Dogs on the Stage”; and “Goethe and the Fire Brigade”! His delightful autobiography, When I Was a Little Boy, mentions that he had visited Dublin although there is little evidence of when this occurred. He played tennis in London in 1938 with that most English of Irishmen, Bernard Bracken, and he may have extended his visit to Dublin. Another possibility would be a visit in the postwar years in his role as president of PEN, the writers’ organisation. The autobiography catches neatly his trademark apposition of wide-eyed innocence and mischievous spirit. In the foreword, he posits that all proper books should have a foreword. A book with a foreword he likened to house with a garden: a book without a foreword to the Dresden tenement where he was born. Prolific in output in many literary formats, including journalism, reviews, novels and poems, his finest work reflected the energy of the Weimar republic and the artistic movement Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). Realism is a notable and ground-breaking feature of the Emil books, embedded in the gritty milieu of Berlin. It notably portrays the struggle of working-class family life with Emil’s single working mother a reflection of Kästner’s own mother supporting her family as a hairdresser. The runaway success of the Emil books has somewhat drawn attention away from his other outputs. His novel Fabian (1931), much admired by Graham Greene, was daringly modern and explicit in terms of the free-living aspects of the Weimar period: unsurprisingly his books were burned by the National Socialist regime in 1933, and all banned except Emil and the Detectives. Kästner chose to stay in Germany rather than exile, a form of internal exile. He managed to write the script for a film version of the Adventures of Baron von Munchausen in 1943 under the pseudonym of Bert Citizen, arousing the ire of Goebbels when this was discovered and narrowly escaping execution by the SS at war’s end. His insights into the human condition are their most appealing and accessible in his collections of poetry. Paralleling the wit, satire, lyricism and common touch of earlier poets such as Heinrich Heine and Wilhelm Busch, he promoted the opportunity of poetry to act as sounding boards and instrumental supports in the challenges of everyday life. This comes to fruition in his Dr Erich Kästner’s Poetical Medicine Cabinet (1936), the title itself an echo of Heine’s description of the human insights of the Bible as the “Medicine Cabinet of Humanity”. In the droll foreword Kästner describes the collection as a reference work devoted to the care of the average inner life. He lists the contents of the typical home medicine cabinet but questions their utility in the face of the desolate loneliness of furnished room or the cold, wet, foggy autumn evenings. What remedies should someone resort to when seized by angel of jealousy? What should someone gargle who is fed up with life? What use are lukewarm compresses to someone whose marriage is falling apart? Kästner proposes that other remedies are needed to alleviate loneliness, disappointment and other heartache, chief among which are humour, anger, indifference, irony, contemplation and exaggeration. The analogy of therapeutic efficacy is carried through in a framework for prescription of the poems to 36 human conditions and states, listed in alphabetical order from when ageing makes you sad (wenn das Alter traurig stimmt) to irritation with one’s contemporaries (Zeitgenossen). The poems are short, notable for brief sentences whose economy of measure contains surprises of consolation and calm embedded in the language of everyday life, reminiscent of the poetry of Tomas Tranströmer or Seamus Heaney. Sadly, few of his poems are translated into English and currently in print – fresh translations would be a fitting anniversary tribute for this versatile and gifted artist.Authored by Austin Alonzo via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours), Although President-elect Donald Trump and the Republican Party swept the 2024 general election, the cryptocurrency industry feels it is the real winner. Powered by donations from some of the biggest figures in cryptocurrency and venture capital, three political action committees poured more than $100 million into efforts to influence the 2024 election. “ This election was a huge win for crypto ,” co-founder and CEO of Coinbase Global Inc. Brian Armstrong wrote on Nov. 7 in an article on X. Coinbase, a cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2012, donated about $55 million to the super PAC Fairshake, according to Federal Election Commission records. Armstrong personally donated $1 million. As Armstrong wrote, the industry had much to celebrate in early November. It saw its preferred candidates take the White House and win key seats in both houses of Congress. He declared that the 119th Congress will be the “most pro-crypto Congress ever.” In his message, Coinbase’s leader wrote something that is usually implied but rarely said in the world of political spending, too. “ [Washington] received a clear message that being anti-crypto is a good way to end your career ,” Armstrong said. Twenty years ago, few people had heard of cryptocurrency—a term used to refer to decentralized digital currencies as opposed to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) that are controlled and backed by a government or central bank. One week after the Nov. 5 election, a Bitcoin was trading for more than $89,000. Gold, by comparison, traded for about $2,600 an ounce on the same day. Between 2007 and 2009, a person or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto conceived of and launched Bitcoin . It was a new type of digital money secured via encryption technology. Unlike traditional currency, Bitcoin can transfer value online without a bank or a payment processor. It is not backed by any government, central bank fiat currency, or physical asset. Bitcoin began as an obscure novelty worth less than 10 cents per token. However, its price has exploded in the last decade, creating significant public interest in the digital asset. According to the crypto website Coinranking, as of Nov. 13, Bitcoin’s market capitalization was about $1.83 trillion. Nevertheless, public opinion polling shows that a majority of Americans are not confident in cryptocurrency as an investment. A Pew Research Center study published in October found that just 5 percent of the people it surveyed in February said they were “very” or “extremely” confident in the reliability and safety of cryptocurrency. The same report found that 17 percent of Americans have ever invested in, traded, or used a cryptocurrency. As an investment, about 38 percent of respondents said cryptocurrency has done “worse than expected.” Rick Claypool, the research director in the president’s office of Public Citizen, told The Epoch Times that cryptocurrency, generally, is an extremely volatile investment vehicle without any intrinsic value—one that is now very risky for the average investor. Public Citizen, founded in 1971, is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization. In May, it published a report describing the cryptocurrency industry’s investment in politics as part of a “strategy of combating enforcement crackdowns and designing a regulatory system that meets the industry’s specifications.” The growing use of cryptocurrency over the last decade, and concern about the consumer risks, has led to a rush to begin regulating the fast-growing industry. The swift rise and fall of Sam Bankman-Fried and his cryptocurrency exchange FTX highlighted the potential for fraud in a lightly regulated sector of the economy. In March, Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to pay $11 billion in forfeiture for what the U.S. Department of Justice called his “orchestration of multiple fraudulent schemes.” Bankman-Fried was accused of stealing more than $8 billion of his customer’s money through FTX and Alameda Research, a cryptocurrency trading firm he founded. Bankman-Fried was initially arrested in the Bahamas and extradited to the United States, where he was charged with multiple fraud offenses, in December 2022. FTX collapsed in November 2022. A year earlier, Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Gary Gensler asked the Senate’s Banking Housing and Urban Affairs Committee for additional resources to begin addressing regulatory concerns surrounding the cryptocurrency industry. In that testimony, he said the entire crypto asset class was “rife with fraud, scams, and abuse.” Under Gensler, who was appointed commissioner by President Joe Biden in April 2021, the SEC views most crypto assets as securities. Since 2022, the SEC has charged multiple firms with violating federal securities law by offering and selling unregistered securities. As recently as Oct. 9, when he appeared at a conference at the New York University School of Law, Gensler said he continues to view the crypto industry as a hotbed of “fraudsters,” “grifters,” and “scams.” Gensler’s actions made him the crypto industry’s top political enemy , Claypool said. In 2024, the industry began spending on political causes through three linked committees: Fairshake, Defend American Jobs, and Protect Progress. Claypool said while these PACs were founded and funded by crypto, none of the advertisements and political messaging they paid for said anything about cryptocurrency or a candidate’s positions on financial regulations. Fairshake was launched in May 2023. According to federal records, within its first six months, it received donations of $1 million or more from Armstrong, Coinbase, and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz’s co-founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz. By the end of 2023, it had raised about $85.7 million. Representatives of Coinbase, Andreessen, and Horowitz did not respond to a request for comment from The Epoch Times. According to its latest FEC disclosure, covering its activities through Oct. 16, the PAC raised about $118.4 million and spent about $153.3 million in 2024. Its top donors were Coinbase, executives at Andreessen Horowitz, and Ripple Labs Inc. Representatives of Ripple did not respond to a request for comment from The Epoch Times. Fairshake’s most significant independent expenditures against a single candidate, totaling more than $10 million, went toward opposing Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) in her bid to replace outgoing Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.). Porter lost in the state’s Democratic Party primary to Senator-elect Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) in March. Ahead of Porter’s primary, a new political group called the Stand With Crypto Alliance emerged. In its inaugural release, dated Feb. 7, Stand With Crypto said it planned to launch a “candidate questionnaire and voter education program” in California. Read the rest here...

The man who ended Nadal's career helps the Netherlands beat Germany to reach the Davis Cup finalA video shows people emerging from the wreckage of Wednesday's Azerbaijan Airlines crash. A 2015 study from Time Magazine found lower fatality rates in the rear section of aircraft. Pilot actions and the circumstances of the crash impact survivability across all seat areas. Video footage of survivors emerging from the wreckage of an that crashed Wednesday raises questions on how it's possible to survive such a catastrophic event. At least 29 people survived the crash in Kazakhstan, and 38 people died. The survivability of any plane crash largely depends on the circumstances of the accident. It's not yet known what , or how nearly half the people on board survived. In general, however, seating arrangements and the actions of crew on board can contribute to survivability. Specifically, seats in the rear of a plane — the section from which the Azerbaijan survivors were emerging — are historically the safest, data shows. Federal data analyzed by in 2015, which looked at 17 crashes between 1985 and 2000 that had both survivors and fatalities and seat maps available, found the back third of the aircraft had a fatality rate of 32%. The aft middle seats had the lowest fatality rate at 28%. That compares to the 39% fatality rate in the middle third section and the 38% fatality rate in the front third section. The study found the highest fatality rate was in the middle section aisle seats at 44%. The report followed a 2007 by the science and technology magazine Popular Mechanics. It analyzed 20 crashes dating back to 1971 and found the survival rate in the aft section was 69%, which is a 31% fatality rate. The middle section and front sections had survival rates of 56% and 49%, respectively. The back of the plane may be safer because, when a plane crashes, the front and middle sections often absorb much of the impact energy. This can allow the to remain more intact during head-on collisions with water or terrain, even if the rear portion separates from the plane. The sole four people who survived a in 1985 were seated in the aft section when the plane slammed into a mountainside. 520 others died. A Delta Air Lines crash in 1985 in Texas saw 27 survivors, most of whom were seated in the back of the aircraft. The aft section broke free during impact. In 2012, the Discovery Channel into the desert with test dummies on board to analyze survivability. They found that the middle and aft sections were the least fatal, with the front section experiencing 12 times the force of gravity. The middle and aft sections experienced a G-force of eight and six, respectively. and cabin crew responses can also improve the chances of surviving a plane crash. Azerbaijan Airlines president Samir Rzayev spoke about the pilots' "heroism" to reporters on Wednesday. Both died in the crash. "While this tragic accident brought a significant loss to our nation, the crew's valiant dedication to their duties until the last moment and their prioritization of human life have immortalized their names in history," Rzayev said, Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger is one of the more famous examples of pilots whose quick decision-making is credited with saving lives. In 2009, Sullenberger's US Airways plane lost engine power over New York City. He responded by ditching the aircraft in the Hudson River because there were no runways in gliding range. All Decades earlier, a United Airlines plane crashed in Iowa in 1989 due to an engine failure and subsequent hydraulics loss, meaning aircraft control was severely limited. The pilots kept the landing gear down to absorb some of the crash shock and maintained relative control of the plane as it crashed. 184 of the 296 passengers and crew survived. Flight attendants have also been credited for saving lives. During a in January, flight crews' quick response and communication were cited for the successful evacuation of all 379 people on board. Federal authorities say there is no because every crash is different and depends on factors like how the plane impacted the ground and whether there was a fire. Sully's water landing is an example of how the back of the plane could be most at risk after landing because it was taking on water with no exit doors available — so those passengers were among the last to exit. In the United crash in Iowa, most of the survivors were in the rows behind first class but in front of the wings. They likely lived because of how the plane hit the ground and broke during landing, allowing people to more easily escape. Some people who did not perish on impact died due to smoke inhalation, an NTSB investigation found. In 1977, a Pan Am and a KLM killing 583 people and becoming the world's deadliest plane crash. However, 61 people seated in the front section of the Pan Am plane survived. The KLM jet hit the middle and aft sections of the Pan Am aircraft, causing the front of the Pan Am jet to be less severely damaged and allowing people to escape via an opening near the left wing. Despite the different outcomes of the varying air crashes over the decades, — regardless of where you sit — thanks to strict safety laws and improvements in aircraft design. A 2020 National Transportation Safety Board survivability found that 1.3% of people involved in commercial airline accidents between 2001 and 2017 died, down from 4.7% between 1983 and 2000. Elder statesman, Edwin Clark has written a letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, lauding her efforts to reform the judiciary while revisiting the controversial removal of Justice Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. In the letter made available to the media in Abuja on Sunday, Clark described the removal as a gross injustice and a blot on Nigeria’s democratic record. Clark commended Justice Kekere-Ekun’s commitment to cleaning up the judiciary, emphasising the importance of an efficient and incorruptible judicial system. “Without an efficient and incorruptible judiciary, Nigeria will end up as a failed country,” he wrote, expressing the hope that ongoing reforms would restore public confidence in the judiciary. In revisiting the events surrounding Justice Onnoghen’s ousting, the foremost South-South leader described it as an orchestrated humiliation carried out by Buhari and his then-Attorney General, Abubakar Malami. He characterised the suspension of Onnoghen and the subsequent appointment of Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as Acting CJN as “callous, unjust, and barbaric.” The elder statesman argued that Onnoghen was unfairly targeted to ensure the judiciary aligned with Buhari’s political ambitions, particularly during the 2019 presidential election. He recounted how Onnoghen’s removal circumvented due process, as the National Judicial Council (NJC) was not consulted, and alleged that judicial tribunals established under Justice Tanko Mohammed were manipulated to favour Buhari’s re-election. Clark did not mince words in condemning the broader culture of impunity under Buhari’s administration, likening it to practices in autocratic regimes. He called for accountability, urging the administration of President Bola Tinubu to ensure that no individual or officeholder is above the law. “Sacred cows must not exist in Nigeria, no matter whose ox is gored,” Clark asserted. He criticised the tendency of former presidents to avoid scrutiny despite allegations of corruption, noting, “Today in Nigeria, we have corrupt presidents accusing their successors of corruption without reflecting on their own actions in office.” Clark also highlighted the irony in Onnoghen’s case, recalling how the former CJN had been part of the Supreme Court panel whose ruling favoured Buhari in the 2011 presidential election dispute. He suggested that Onnoghen’s principled stance and independence posed a threat to Buhari’s second-term bid, making his removal a calculated move. Clark made a broader call for reform and justice, urging the judiciary and the Tinubu administration to address past injustices to strengthen democracy and the rule of law. He also hinted at the possibility of legal redress, stating that Buhari’s actions should be brought to trial to set a precedent for accountability. Since then, Smith has been trending to miss this upcoming week but nothing has been confirmed. Smith has missed just two games throughout his NFL career, one being earlier this season due to a concussion. If Smith were to miss Sunday's game, it would mark the first time in his four-year career that he would miss more than one game in a single season. Smith's near-perfect attendance is a testament to his durability. The hamstring injury Smith is dealing with has plagued the wide receiver for several weeks now. A.J. Brown also missed time this season due to a hamstring injury. Smith took much of the receiving load in Brown's absence as he was sidelined for three games. The Eagles could choose to keep Smith out as the team prepares for a deep playoff run. Smith has 41 catches for 516 yards and four touchdowns this season. As of late, Smith has tallied just six receptions and 43 yards on nine targets through the last two games. Smith's lack of production seems to be because of a weird combination of factors. Plays are certainly dialed up for the wide receiver but haven't been successful. Smith isn't the only offensive starter to be dealing with an injury heading into Week 12. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has also been nursing an ankle injury but was listed as a full participant in practice Thursday which is a sign he will be ready to go for Sunday's game against the Rams. "At this point of the year, I think it's not about, I think it's necessarily about me, I think it's the mentality where we are," Hurts told NBC Sports . "We're in a phase of the year where things could very easily (go bad). Well, it did (last year), it didn't end the way we wanted to. And so that's at the top of my (list) as we enter this phase and putting the emphasis on finishing strong, putting ourself in a good place." The Eagles hope to escape their playoff woes in 2024 but will need both Smith and Hurts to remain healthy in order to do so. For more on the NFL , head to Newsweek Sports .

For 26 single-parent households, thanks to a helping hand via The Singletons , this season feels a little brighter thanks to the nonprofit’s holiday toy drive held at Diamond Children’s Hospital. The Singletons, a Phoenix-based nonprofit, provides essential support to single-parent families coping with cancer. “For 19 years, we’ve worked to lighten the load of families battling cancer,” said Jody Boyd, founder and CEO of The Singletons. “This is our second holiday event in Tucson, and it’s wonderful to see our community grow.” Boyd founded the organization after the loss of her childhood friend Michelle Singleton to breast cancer. “She was a single mom of four children, and I saw firsthand how overwhelming it was,” Boyd shared. “Our programs mirror the ways her friends and family supported her—providing meals, essentials, and a sense of care.” At this year’s event, the nonprofit distributed gifts, meal kits, and household necessities. “Families today are leaving with items ranging from laundry detergent to toothbrushes, plus holiday gifts tailored to their wish lists,” Boyd said. Volunteer-packed meal kits, including comfort foods like enchiladas and mac and cheese, aim to provide quick, nutritious options during hectic days of treatment. The impact extends beyond material goods. Jamie Sanchez, a social worker with Banner University Medical Center, emphasized the importance of these events for the families. “Cancer can be financially devastating,” Sanchez said. “Many parents have to stop working to care for their child, which compounds the stress of meeting basic needs. These donations make an enormous difference.” Volunteer efforts, like baking fresh cookies with a local Girl Scout troop, highlight the collaborative spirit behind the event. “It’s heartwarming to see the community come together,” Sanchez noted. “These families often feel isolated, but programs like this remind them they’re not alone.” Looking ahead, The Singletons plans to expand its Tucson outreach. “Our goal is to provide consistent support year-round,” Boyd said. “The holidays are special, but we’re here every month ensuring these families know someone cares.” To learn more or get involved, visit TheSingletonsAZ.org . —— Eddie Celaya is a multimedia journalist at KGUN 9.
