The news about academic cheating has gone from worrying to post mortem. Colleges apparently can’t manage cheating on any level. As usual, a lot of handwringing and total lack of answers produce a sort of techno-manga doomscape. Those headlines create a bizarre set of situations from “ AI is an existential threat to colleges” from the Washington Post (paywall) to the truly alarming penalizing of a student for proofreading using Grammarly. The AI outscores the humans relentlessly at about 83%, according to Forbes . As usual, honesty gets you nowhere. See that quaint little rustic waste of time called the USA for details. Strangely, people aren’t happy with this 100% true-to-Western-cultural breakthrough into institutional incompetence and corruption. Despite the decades of noble roles of mainstream media and so many utterly futile public figures, people who can’t do their jobs aren’t much in demand. “Why not?” you enquire, grimly bolting yourself to the ridiculous shriveled lettuce of a society. Well, ‘cause: Education has become a stagnant backwater of regressive politics. They’re either scared of it or actively trying to prevent it. See Oklahoma for details. Defunding public education is actually a stated policy in the USA. If they seriously think everyone can afford private education, you can see the level of intellect in the mix. Past idiocies sabotaged education decades ago. The blame isn’t all one-way. Imbecile ideas like not teaching phonics (structuring basic words and concepts) did a lot of damage. Many people in multiple generations are functionally illiterate. The illiteracy of the system itself doesn’t exactly help in managing AI issues. Literacy isn’t just being able to read. It’s being able to understand what you read. It’s essential to critical thinking, of which we have so little lately. The future isn’t looking at all good for the skills bases required to manage new tech and things like human reality. Let’s get down to basics: 1, AI cannot replace humans. If you replace people with AI, you have to check absolutely everything. It’s actually more work. 2, AI doesn’t give you actual skills. You still need to learn and understand to know your stuff. Your overpriced education is utterly meaningless and useless if you can’t do the jobs. 3. It’s pretty easy to prove who can really do a job and who can’t. All you need is a simple competence test. See if the useless smug little brats can function. 4, Force AI providers to include AI detection capacity in their products by law. This “free lunch for fakes” stuff has to stop somewhere. Bear in mind that the present capacity is nothing like up to this task. According to the Forbes article above, the current 6% detection rate of AI is an overestimate. (Might help with scientific fraud and deranged social media bots, too.) This isn’t “artificial intelligence” yet. It’s “artificial idiocy”. The Government has “dragged its feet” on tackling , the chief of a campaign group has said, as thousands marched in London. The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) said 32,000 people attended a march from the Royal Courts of Justice to Parliament Square on Sunday afternoon. The protest was a stand against “unprecedented levels of anti-Semitism and growing extremism in British society”, the group said. protests since have “unleashed a tidal wave” of anti-Semitism, with hate crimes towards Jews quadrupling in the time since, according to the CAA. Protesters waved Israeli flags and placards, and chanted “Act against hate, before it’s too late” and “Say it loud, Jewish and proud”. Gideon Falter, CAA chief executive, told the crowd: “Two governments have now dragged their feet on anti-Semitism since October 7. “The fight against anti-Semitism puts Jews on the front lines of the battle for the future of the West. “It is a long front line with many flashpoints, but should any part of it fail, the entire defence fails. “We owe it to future generations to raise our voices against this tide of extremism and bigotry, and reject appeasement, so that we might bequeath them the bright future that once was ours.” A spokesperson for CAA said that over the past year, “anti-Semitic hate crime has quadrupled”, and Jews are now the “most targeted faith minority in the country, despite our minuscule numbers”. They added: “Jewish people feel like we’re drowning. A loud siren began to sound, and a yellow beam of light was reflected as soon as the leopard set his foot close to 30-35 metres from a dwelling. This scared the wild cat, and he fled the area. This warning mechanism prevented a possible leopard attack. This was not the only incident, several other incidents were also reported and recorded in Ambegaon and Junnar tehsils, especially in the hotspot areas, where the newly inducted warning mechanism has proven effective in preventing the leopard attacks. Smita Rajhans, assistant conservator, Junnar forest department, said, “Currently, we have 55 Aniders placed at various locations including 20 in Junnar, 20 in Otur 20, 10 in Shirur and 5 in Manchar. The system not only alarms people about the leopard’s presence but also saves the animal. We do not need to harm the leopard or even trap the wild cat, the animal moves away on its own, which also helps keep the big cat safe.” “It is a manually operated system, and we are seeing a decrease in interaction especially in the hotspot areas,” said Rajhans. The forest department is trying to combine this system with its solar fencing project to enhance the safety of villagers and wild animals. So far at least 10 people including 6 in Junnar and 4 in Shirur have received the benefits of the solar fencing scheme. The scheme will be expanded to hundreds of other people in leopard-prone tehsils, said officials. Sagar More, a farmer in Shiroli Khurd village of Junnar tehsil, said, “The leopard recently killed our pet dogs after which we installed the solar fencing around our home. Recently, when the leopard came in contact with this fencing, he suffered a minor current and ran away, since then we haven’t seen a leopard presence around the house.” Apart from solar fencing, the department is also making efforts to protect the marginal community including shepherds, farm workers, and labourers from possible leopard attacks. These people mostly sleep in open places and are very prone to such attacks. To protect such vulnerable people, the forest department has come up with a solar lamp and tent distribution scheme. The department has purchased nearly 400 solar lamps and an equal number of tents. In the first phase 85 lamps and tents were distributed to the shepherds in Junnar tehsil and further distribution is going on. “While Anider system and solar fencing seem effective in protecting the people living in houses, the tents and solar lamps will help protect the marginal community. The tents will not only safeguard the shepherds from leopard attack but also protect them from snakebite and rough weather conditions,” said Amol Satpute, deputy conservator, Junnar forest department.
