When confronted by horrific scenes such as those witnessed in the German city of Magdeburg on Friday, where five people were killed and about 200 injured in a car-ramming attack, one of the first questions many people rightly ask is: why? Certainly, the indiscriminate nature of the violence is shocking and strikes at people’s sense of security. Among the dead is a nine-year-old boy; many people who were out shopping and socialising before Christmas will be left with life-changing injuries and lasting trauma. The attack was roundly condemned by numerous countries like the UAE as well as the Muslim Council of Elders. However, at this stage, much about the attacker’s exact motives remains unknown.A 50-year-old Saudi doctor, identified by German police as Taleb A, is the main suspect. The long-time German resident has a history of troubling online outbursts; analysis of social media accounts allegedly held by him suggests he was a vocal critic of Islam who sympathised with the German far-right. After he was arrested at the scene, police said Taleb A was acting alone. But what pushed him to carry out such a heinous attack is still unclear. Although the police investigation is at an early stage, there are worrying suggestions that Saudi warnings about the suspect went largely unheeded by German authorities. The warnings to Germany had reportedly been made several times since the suspect left Saudi Arabia in 2006, but a report in German outlet Welt claims a 2023 risk assessment by German investigators concluded the man posed “no specific danger”. The uncertainty has not deterred some from indulging in speculation or seizing the opportunity to accrue political capital. A group of about 1,000 people gathered in Magdeburg on Saturday night, with some brandishing a large banner with the word “remigration” written on it. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has claimed – without evidence – that the 2015 wave of immigration into Europe is responsible, adding that the EU’s leadership wants such attacks “to happen to Hungary, too”. Many questions hang over this case, but it is clear that security and intelligence co-operation regarding such problematic individuals will have to be reviewed and improved. Not only do the general public have the right to life in safety, but Germany’s Arab and Muslims communities – the vast majority of whom are law-abiding residents – will have to be protected from the hostility emanating from right-wing hardliners. This is true also of such communities across Europe. Many of these people have fled war and instability at home to begin new lives in peace and security; others were born in Europe. However, collectively they are often the target of pernicious political campaigns and unfairly lumped together with the tiny groups of extremists who have carried out attacks much like that seen in Magdeburg at the weekend. Immigrants to Europe want and deserve security as much as host communities do. A model of a tiny, wedge-shaped robot designed to explore subsurface oceans of icy moons, right, sits beside a large waterproof capsule containing electronics and sensors for testing below glacial ice at the Juneau Icefield in Alaska in July 2023. The model, about 5 inches (12 centimeters) long, was 3D-printed to show the final envisioned size of a futuristic NASA mission concept called SWIM, short for Sensing With Independent Micro-swimmers. Led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory from spring 2021 to fall 2024, SWIM envisions a swarm of dozens of self-propelled, cellphone-size robots exploring the waters of icy moons like Jupiter’s Europa and Saturn’s Enceladus. Delivered to the subsurface ocean by an ice-melting cryobot, the tiny robots would zoom away to look for chemical and temperature signals that could point to life. The capsule shown here contains the first generation of an ocean composition sensor built for the SWIM robots by a team at Georgia Tech. The final version of the sensor would enable each robot to simultaneously measure temperature, pressure, acidity or alkalinity, conductivity, and chemical makeup. During the Alaska field test, the team lowered the capsule through a borehole in the ice and measured pressure and conductivity down to a depth of 164 feet (50 meters). This field test was conducted as part of a JPL-managed project called ORCAA (Ocean Worlds Reconnaissance and Characterization of Astrobiological Analogs). Known as an analog mission, ORCAA is working to answer science questions and test technology in preparation for a potential future mission to explore the surface or subsurface of icy moons. ORCAA is funded by NASA’s Planetary Science and Technology from Analog Research program. According to Lillard, he doesn't get his due credit on that end of the floor since he doesn't often get torched like others in his position. “In the last couple years of my career, it’s been something that I’ve taken pride in," said Lillard . "I think early in my career, like most young players, especially scoring young players, it’s a learning curve defensively. Not just physically, but when you don’t know the terminology, you don’t know personnel that well, it’s a challenge to be a good defender in the NBA. And as I’ve become more experienced, I think it’s carried on as more of a narrative than actual truth. Guys not just coming out here breaking me off and putting me out there and scoring on me over and over." After starting the season 3-8, Milwaukee hit rock bottom early before a recent win streak put them back in play for a top-six seed. For his part, Lillard is trying his best to stop the bleeding with averages of 25.9 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game on 45.1% shooting. Chandigarh To build pressure on the Centre to accept the demands and address concerns regarding Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s health, farmer leaders will seek time to meet President Droupadi Murmu in the first week of January. Dallewal, 67, who heads Bharatiya Kisan Union (Sidhupur), has been sitting on a hunger strike at the Khanauri border since November 26 to put pressure on the Centre to accept the farmers’ demands, including legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP). The SKM Punjab unit leaders held a meeting on Tuesday and condemned the central and the Punjab governments’ “indifferent attitude”, saying they should have intervened by now as Dallewal’s health was deteriorating. SKM leader Prem Singh Bhangu said it was decided in the meeting to jointly present a delegation to the President in view of deteriorating health of Dallewal. The national coordination committee of the SKM would seek an appointment from the President for first week in January.” The SKM leaders, however, said there was no plan to join the ongoing protest at Shambhu and Khanauri or their call for programmes such as a Punjab ‘bandh’. He said appeals for legal guarantee for MSP and loan waiver, among others, were old demands, for which their body was already fighting at various platforms. The SKM has also planned a rally in Moga on January 9 in which various issues pertaining to farmers will be highlighted. Farmers, under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been camping at the Shambhu and the Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces. Referring to the Centre’s National Agriculture Market Policy, the SKM leaders expressed apprehension that it was another move to bring back the repealed farm laws in another form. Neither the Punjab chief minister nor his ministers are concerned. Both the central and the Punjab governments should have intervened by now. When we recently met the Punjab governor, we expressed concern over Dallewal’s health. We told the governor that the Centre should intervene as his (Dallewal’s) health was important. We also told him that the situation was volatile. If anything untoward happens, a problem of law and order can arise,” he said. The Michigan native and longtime quarterback coach has been mentoring kids of all ages for years. He’s known Underwood, the No. 1 prospect in America who flipped his college commitment from LSU to Michigan on Thursday, since he was 8 years old. “Like a long, baby deer,” Dooley described Underwood, who towered over his high school competition at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds. “He was always talented as a kid dude to his dad’s backyard workouts. He was the kid who was just grinding.” Now 17, Underwood plans to enroll at Michigan next month and begin his college journey in the maize and blue, thrust into the national spotlight as one of the most intriguing quarterbacks in the country. Michigan’s coaches — who can’t speak publicly about Underwood until he makes his commitment official early next month — celebrated the news late Thursday, touting their ability to keep the state’s prized prospect home. In a video posted on social media confirming his flip to Michigan, a young, adolescent Underwood could be seen speaking into a microphone proclaiming himself — one day, he hoped — a member of the Wolverines. That’s kind of cliche, but what he has is he’s clutch. “He’s not afraid to fail, which is a unique trait for a quarterback with his pocket courage.” Underwood, the QB coach says, is also mature for his age. He was 13 years old when he played his first game in high school and will enroll and go through spring practices as a 17-year-old, not turning 18 until just a few weeks before the season opener. As for next season, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore and his staff will have a decision to make on when, and if, to play him. The school has had a long-standing track record of letting true-freshmen quarterbacks sit their first year, to learn and absorb the responsibilities that come with playing in college. Even so, Dooley believes Underwood could be ready to play on Day 1. “I always use the term unicorn,” Dooley said. “He’s 1 of 1. Now he gets to be around those in a room who take the position seriously — a staff, a college atmosphere. Everybody doesn’t understand what it is you do. When you’re around that atmosphere and structure, he’s only going to continue to raise the bar. This year, he rushed for 568 yards and five touchdowns, showing off his dual-threat ability. “The past couple years he’s continued to get better at being very methodical and situation-based,” Dooley said. “Understanding down-and-distance, taking care of the football in the red zone, taking calculated risks and shots. “When he was a freshman, he used to try and stretch the field vertically a ton, and myself and his dad in our down used to try and talk to him, saying ‘work the chains, move the sticks.’ And without a doubt, (he listened).” As it turns out, Underwood’s college career is just the next step in a pathway toward his ultimate goal: Winning a Super Bowl in the NFL. It’s a dream he’s been talking about for some time, Dooley says, and it will be up to Michigan and its staff to make sure he’s able to reach the next level. Moore and his assistants were “relentless” in their pursuit of Underwood, Dooley said, making him feel comfortable in his decision to stay close to home. “I know he wants to be a winning quarterback. I know he wants to be the best to ever play the position,” Dooley said. “Most kids say, ‘Hey, I want to be an NFL player.’ You’ve never heard that out of Bryce. You ask him, what do you want to do when you get older? ‘I want to win a Super Bowl.’ You’ll say, ‘What if you win one?’ ‘Well, I’ll win it again.’ He’s always got something he’s chasing.” Underwood will enter a quarterback room at Michigan wide open. Veteran Jack Tuttle is out of eligibility after retiring, Davis Warren and Alex Orji have largely struggled in their time on the field this year, and true freshman Jadyn Davis has yet to see the field. An opportunity could be there for Underwood to seize the job and enter next fall as the Wolverines’ stater. Don’t rule out Michigan looking to the transfer portal for a seasoned vet, too. Either way, Dooley looks forward to seeing what Underwood does at Michigan. He cautions fans to show some patience early — “he’ll be learning on the job,” Dooley points out — but enjoy the ride. Geneva/New Delhi, Dec 22 (PTI) India has the potential to be a key producer of sustainable aviation fuel by utilising its ethanol supplies and availability of lipids feedstocks like non-edible industrial oils, according to a senior official at the global airlines' grouping IATA. With decarbonisation in focus, efforts are being made to reduce emissions and over the years, Indian carriers have operated some flights with a blend of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and traditional Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). India has the availability of lipids feedstocks like non-edible industrial oils, animal fats and tallows where the supply chains are not well developed with limited supply for biodiesel production, Mistry said. The country's surplus annual biomass availability is estimated to be more than 200 Mt. With multiple options available for road fleets, lipids-based feedstock must be used for India's SAF value chains. These oily feedstocks can be utilised at existing refineries by ASTM-qualified HEFA co-processing pathways, Mistry said. Consultancy Deloitte, in a report in October this year, said India has the potential to produce 8-10 million tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2040, and investments worth USD 70-85 billion will be required to achieve the projected production. On the priorities under the SAF umbrella, Mistry said it is a question about more support to get the technologies to maturity and enable some sort of market development. "We should not have feedstock criteria that are regionally divergent. We should have sustainability criteria that are universally acknowledged," he added. There are 11 certified pathways to make SAF and HEFA method (Hydrotreated Esters Fatty Acids) is projected to account for around 80 per cent of the production in the next five years. HEFA method utilises used cooking oil and animal fats, among others. As per the airlines' grouping, SAF volumes could be boosted by increasing investments to scale up production through the other certified pathways, in particular Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) and Fischer-Tropsch (FT), which use biological and agricultural wastes and residue. "The airline industry's decarbonisation must be seen as part of the global energy transition, not compartmentalised as a transport issue... renewable fuel refineries will produce a broad range of fuels used by other industries, and only a minor share will be SAF, used by airlines," IATA Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist Marie Owens Thomsen said last week. It's the iconic rye bread with the blue and white label, right? Well, imagine how confusing it would have to be if you're an entirely separate company in Buffalo – one that makes frozen pizza dough – that is also called Al Cohen's? That has been the reality for Al Cohen's Premium Dough Products since 2019. That's the year Al Cohen's Rye Bread, which is now made in Syracuse, split its frozen dough manufacturing operation into a separate company. Al Cohen's – the frozen dough company, not the rye bread company – also makes and sells frozen bread dough, which is baked fresh in grocery store bakeries. "You can imagine how confusing it gets," said owner Chris Covelli. Being associated with the rye bread name didn't do enough for the frozen bread maker's brand to make it worth the headaches. Now, Al Cohen's – the frozen dough company, not the rye bread company – will cut the confusion by changing its name. Al Cohen's Premium Dough Products will be known as Covelli Premium Dough Products starting Feb. 1. "Very few people realize that the frozen dough business is separate from the fresh rye bread business,” Covelli said. He added, “Most importantly, none of our products will change. We will continue to use the same recipes and production processes that have made our frozen dough products successful for over 50 years." Aside from the name change, there's another big move in store for Covelli – literally. The company bought the former Will Poultry building at 1075 William St., for $2.2 million. "The biggest challenge by a mile is this facility. We're spending, like, upwards of $60,000 a month right now just keeping this building operational," Covelli said in July. "We explored trying to stay here, and the city wanted to work with us. It's just the bones, the building will not allow us to make a functional food production facility." Only about two-thirds of the 30,000-square-foot building on Broadway was usable. It had just one loading dock, which let out onto the busy Broadway portion of the factory, making it difficult for trucks to move in and out efficiently. "The biggest thing is just putting the frustrations of repairs and maintenance and building issues behind us, and really focusing on growth," Covelli said. "Like I said, we've got a couple really nice pieces of business that want to come on board, and there's too many distractions in this building to really grow. The new facility will give us four times the capacity and eliminate all those headaches and really give us a place to grow into comfortably." Covelli spent more than a year looking for a new building, which spans 57,000 square feet and sits on nearly 3 acres of land. “The main challenge was finding a facility with the specific features we need, such as sufficient frozen storage space, food-grade production rooms, and ample electrical capacity,” Covelli said. The company plans to invest up to $1 million to transform and modernize the facility, turning it into a "hub for growth." The renovated space will include state-of-the-art production lines, new offices and employee break rooms, a test kitchen with advanced equipment for research and development and enhanced cosmetic upgrades throughout. “We’re excited about the new facility and the opportunities it will bring,” Covelli said. “The renovations will ensure we have everything we need to support long-term growth and maintain our commitment to excellence.” Covelli bought out Gioia Capital and Robert Drago in late 2023 and has since taken on two strategic partners. A lawyer for Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for defense secretary, has said the encounter was consensual. Authorities declined to bring charges in the case. Hegseth later paid the woman an undisclosed sum as part of a nondisclosure agreement. The documents offer the most detailed account yet of the steps police took to investigate Hegseth as part of an incident that has been roiling Trump’s team since the former president announced the former Fox News host was his pick to run the Defense Department. The accuser - referred to as “Jane Doe” in the 22-page batch of documents released in response to a public records request - met Hegseth at a Republican conference in Monterey, California, where he had been featured as a speaker. After observing Hegseth behaving “inappropriately” with women at the upscale hotel event, she said she confronted him, officers wrote, and the pair argued. “Doe” recalled Hegseth telling her that he was a “nice guy,” officers wrote. Her next memory was being in an unknown room with Hegseth, according to the police report. As of Nov. 18, a total of 294 dairies in California were under quarantine due to the avian flu, state agriculture officials confirmed. More than 4 million turkeys and chickens have been killed at poultry ranches across the state in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading. Meanwhile, the bird flu virus was detected in a batch of raw milk from Raw Farm in Fresno County, the California Department of Public Health reported. The Fresno Bee talked to María Soledad, a food safety inspection service spokeswoman at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to learn more about the virus and how it affects food safety. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, highly pathogenic avian influenza — also known as bird flu or H5N1 — is a highly contagious and often deadly disease primarily found in poultry. It is “caused by highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5) and A (H7) viruses,” the agency said on its website. HPAI can spread from wild birds to domestic poultry and other animals. The virus can also infect humans in rare cases. “It is important to note that ‘highly pathogenic’ refers to severe impact in birds, not necessarily in humans,” the agency said. Unlike seasonal influenza viruses, which are typically contracted through human-to-human transmission, avian influenza viruses are spread by infected birds through saliva, mucus and feces, according to the CDC. The virus can also be present in the respiratory secretions, organs, blood, or body fluids of other infected animals — including milk. Human infections occur when the virus enters the eyes, nose or mouth, or is inhaled through airborne droplets, aerosol particles or dust. It can also be transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face. “Illness in humans from avian influenza virus infections have ranged in severity from no symptoms or mild illness to severe disease that resulted in death,” the CDC said. “Consumers can safely enjoy turkey this holiday season,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration wrote in an email to The Bee, noting that food safety inspectors examine turkeys for disease “before and after slaughter.” That includes your Thanksgiving bird. “The turkeys from farms with confirmed avian influenza don’t even get sent to slaughter,” Soledad said. “They are destroyed on premises.” During an avian flu outbreak, “The chance of infected poultry or eggs entering the food chain is low,” the FDA said on its website in April, “because of the rapid onset of symptoms in poultry as well as the safeguards in place, which include testing of flocks and federal inspection programs.” “When food is properly prepared and stored, the risk of consumers becoming infected with HPAI is reduced even further,” the FDA said. U.S. President Joe Biden, speaking in Washington, called the agreement “good news” and said his administration would make a renewed push for a ceasefire in Gaza. Vice President-elect JD Vance has worn a handful of hats this year, but his sights are now centered on ensuring the Donald Trump administration secures wins — early and often. It’s a tall order, seemingly requiring Vance to be in multiple places at once, and the stakes are high. That directive has required Vance to miss some Senate votes, even as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) works to force through President Joe Biden’s nominees for judicial posts. But Democrats hold a 51 to 49 majority and have Vice President Kamala Harris’s vote if needed. Vance’s vote therefore is not likely to be a determining factor for most confirmation votes, allowing him to work effectively elsewhere. Keeping families’ sensitive, personal information safe from cyberattacks has become the top insurance risk for private schools in Australia, according to a global insurance broker. AON Australia, which has more than 600 Australian private schools on its books, has named cyber risk as schools’ primary area of vulnerability, followed by mental health and social media, in its Independent Schools Risk Report . In this context, the term child abuse includes abuse from fellow children or at the hands of adults. AON national education director Andrew Leahy said this in part reflected the 2017 release of the report of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. He said for many schools, getting insurance cover for child abuse was becoming “incredibly difficult”. An increasingly complex digital environment was the common thread linking the top three areas of risk for private schools, with cyberattacks becoming an established threat schools could not ignore. “You’ll never get in front of it,” Leahy said, adding that the nature of the information schools held made them vulnerable. “Schools have a lot of personal, identifiable information,” he said. “They have names, addresses, dates of birth, potentially medical conditions or counselling records as well as school records.
