The prize includes a $100,000 grant, a new scoreboard, professional consultation from football experts, 5G network upgrades and a remodeled weight room. Inola celebrated its victory Tuesday morning with a pep assembly in the high school gym. While the band punched out Inola's fight song and the cheerleaders waved magenta pompoms, junior football player Tyler Yoder led other students in a chant: "When I say 'T,' you say 'Mobile'!" This year introduced T-Mobile's first Friday Night Lights competition. Matt Cantu, T-Mobile director for North Texas and Oklahoma, congratulated Inola for beating the other 1,700 small-town high schools that took part in the contest. "This is part of our commitment at T-Mobile to small town America, and nothing embodies that feeling of a sense of community like Inola, Oklahoma," Cantu said. Inola was one of 16 finalists in the competition, and the only finalist in Oklahoma. To win, a school had to garner the most likes on an Instagram video created especially for the competition. Inola and Hughson High School in California traded first place several times in the final days of the competition, but by the end of the night Nov. 12, Inola had pulled ahead. Yoder said he and other students ran a ground campaign all over the state to drum up support — at the Student Council state convention in Bartlesville, an Oklahoma City Thunder game, and the new Scheels store in Tulsa. "It's been a lot more than just social media for us; it's been community and a lot of face-to-face contact," Yoder said. "It's really great to have all that hard work pay off." Inola plans to replace the aging turf on its football field with the prize money. The prize will also bring former NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski to Inola to remodel the weight room, which sophomore cheerleader Suri Spratt said needs a huge upgrade. Yoder said he was pumped at the prospect of meeting Gronkowski. "That's a guy who was stiff-arming people into the dirt when I was a little kid, and him getting to meet me, that's pretty awesome," Yoder said. Deleea Meeker, Inola's student council adviser, led the charge on the competition with the Student Council. She said she was grateful for the support Inola received from across Oklahoma because the town of roughly 2,000 people was up against schools from towns with up to 150,000. "Being a small school, we go without a lot," Meeker said. "This is really exciting because there's a whole bunch of cool things that come with it, but also just being able to update dilapidated facilities, being able to have pride in our community. Big stuff doesn't happen like this — really, ever." Meeker said T-Mobile plans to hold another competition next year. She said that meant upgrades would likely come in time for next school year, as T-Mobile will gather footage in Inola to promote next year's contest. Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton, a resident of Inola, said five of his grandchildren attend Inola schools. He said he was happy the prize money would not only benefit the school, but the entire town, as many other groups in the community use the school's facilities. Walton said the win reflects the camaraderie of small towns like Inola and other northeast Oklahoma communities that propelled Inola High School to victory. "I'm very thankful I'm from small-town America," Walton said. "...I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. You can't say thank you enough for T-Mobile."
