Foreign companies have made a fortune in the U.S. by giving them access to our markets. They shouldn’t be looking for every last penny knowing how many families are hurt.” The International Longshoremen’s Association has until Jan. 15 to negotiate a new contract with the U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents ports and shipping companies. At the heart of the dispute is whether ports can install automated gates, cranes and container-moving trucks that could make it faster to unload and load ships. The union argues that automation would lead to fewer jobs, even though higher levels of productivity could do more to boost the salaries of remaining workers. The Maritime Alliance said in a statement that the contract goes beyond ports to “supporting American consumers and giving American businesses access to the global marketplace – from farmers, to manufacturers, to small businesses, and innovative start-ups looking for new markets to sell their products.” “To achieve this, we need modern technology that is proven to improve worker safety, boost port efficiency, increase port capacity, and strengthen our supply chains,” said the alliance, adding that it looks forward to working with Trump. In October, the union representing 45,000 dockworkers went on strike for three days, raising the risk that a prolonged shutdown could push up inflation by making it difficult to unload container ships and export American products overseas. The issue pits an incoming president who won November’s election on the promise of bringing down prices against commitments to support blue-collar workers along with the kinds of advanced technology that drew him support from Silicon Valley elite such as billionaire Elon Musk. Trump sought to portray the dispute as being between U.S. workers and foreign companies, but advanced ports are also key for staying globally competitive. China is opening a $1.3 billion port in Peru that could accommodate ships too large for the Panama Canal. There is a risk that shippers could move to other ports, which could also lead to job losses. Mexico is constructing a port that is highly automated, while Dubai, Singapore and Rotterdam already have more advanced ports. Instead, Trump said that ports and shipping companies should eschew “machinery, which is expensive, and which will constantly have to be replaced.” “For the great privilege of accessing our markets, these foreign companies should hire our incredible American Workers, instead of laying them off, and sending those profits back to foreign countries,” Trump posted. “It is time to put AMERICA FIRST!”The Prime Minister said the season was a time to remember the importance of “being there for one another”, including in “the more difficult times”. He also expressed hope for “peace, particularly in the Middle East as the birthplace of the Christmas story” amid spiralling conflict across the region. The message comes after a challenging first five months in office for the Labour Government and against the backdrop of a flatlining economy and rising inflation. NEW DELHI: The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) has asked banks to integrate their internal compliance monitoring systems with its advanced supervisory platform Daksh, two executives aware of this development told ET. The regulator has asked banks to implement the integration through straight-through processing (STP), and to facilitate this, the deadline for regulated entities to streamline their compliance functions has been extended to April 2025. "Lenders had requested the RBI to extend the deadline for review and implementation of new internal compliance tracking and monitoring processes, which has been accepted, but now the regulator wants such systems to be integrated with Daksh," a senior bank executive said. Launched last year, Daksh is a web-based end-to-end workflow application through which the RBI monitors compliance requirements in a more focused manner with the objective of further improving the compliance culture in supervised entities (SEs) like banks and non-banking finance companies ( NBFCs ). "We will further discuss the issue with all concerned stakeholders, including technology vendors, and then approach the RBI for more clarification," he said. In January, the regulator had come out with a notification, 'Streamlining of internal compliance monitoring function-leveraging use of technology', and asked regulated entities to implement comprehensive, integrated, enterprise-wide, and workflow-based solutions and tools to enhance the effectiveness of the compliance monitoring process. The deadline to implement it was set for June 30. "Banks had then decided to form a common format for such compliance monitoring, which the RBI has approved," said the second bank executive quoted above. In its January circular, the RBI had noted that after an assessment in select supervised entities of the prevailing system in place for internal monitoring of compliance with regulatory instructions, it was observed that SEs have adopted varying levels of automation to support this function, ranging from the use of macro-enabled spreadsheets to workflow-based software solutions. "There is, thus, a need to implement comprehensive, integrated, enterprise-wide, and workflow-based solutions/tools to enhance the effectiveness of this function," it had stated, adding that this initiative aims to enhance the monitoring framework, enabling real-time data access for improved communication and collaboration among stakeholders. He added that he supports construction of a border wall, saying it is not perfect but helps shift and control illegal border crossing attempts. “Anybody we know who’s committed a serious crime, they’re on the list,” Griffith said of deportation. Asked if he met Donald Trump, Griffith got another round of applause when he said yes. “I wouldn’t say we’re close personal friends,” Griffith added, “but we know each other.” Griffith said he has disagreed not as much with things Trump has said as with how he said them. He cited an instance where Trump hosted a coal company delegation at the White House. After the meeting ended, the press had left and Griffith was waiting for a ride back to the Capitol, he said he saw Trump invite some miners in to see the Oval Office. “That’s the Donald Trump I’m proud to know and to have supported,” Griffith said. Asked about gas prices going down when Trump takes office in January, Griffith said, “In the next two or three weeks? No. In the next two or three years? Yes.” Griffith claimed energy policies during President Biden’s term have lowered the nation’s capacity to produce electric power, and that may mean higher electric prices for consumers. A question about Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency caused Griffith to declare that Musk and DOGE collaborator Vivek Ramaswamy “are geniuses.” He added that he saw much of government regulation as burdensome and costly to U.S. businesses. “It’s a good idea but hard to do,” Griffith said of DOGE. Top officials from the FBI and Department of Homeland Security on Thursday drew bipartisan fire for declining to testify in public at a Senate hearing on "worldwide threats" and instead offering to testify in a classified setting. Both Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Homeland Security Committee expressed anger at what they called Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and FBI Director Christopher Wray's "refusal" to testify in public. "In a shocking departure from the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee's longstanding tradition of transparency and oversight of the threats facing our nation, for the first time in more than 15 years, the Homeland Security and FBI Director have refused to appear before the Committee to provide public testimony at our annual hearing on Threats to the Homeland," Chairman Gary Peters, a Michigan Democrat, said in a statement. Peters said it was "their choice" to not provide public testimony for the American people. "Americans deserve transparency, public answers about the threats we face," Peters said. Sen. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, went a step further and said he "looked forward to Director Wray's resignation." "This is Mayorkas & Wray giving the middle finger to the American people," he tweeted. While it wasn't immediately clear specifically why they declined to testify in public, a Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement that Mayorkas has appeared before Congress more than 30 times. "DHS and the FBI have offered to the Committee a classified briefing to discuss the threats to the Homeland in detail, providing the Committee with the information it needs to conduct its work in the months ahead," a the spokesperson said in a statement. "DHS and the FBI already have shared with the Committee and other Committees, and with the American public, extensive unclassified information about the current threat environment, including the recently published Homeland Threat Assessment." The FBI said in a statement they've "repeatedly" showed their commitment to being transparent with the American people. "We remain committed to sharing information about the continuously evolving threat environment facing our nation and the extraordinary work the men and women of the FBI are doing -- here at home and around the world -- to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution of the United States ," according to an FBI statement.
