jilicc 777 Lorraine Alford, 64, has been a member of the Minnesota-grown Life Time exercise and healthy living chain for 28 years, and an employee of its Highland Park facility in St. Paul for nearly as long. These days, the South Minneapolis grandmother of five — who took to weightlifting to beat a passing depression nearly three decades ago — is little short of taken aback by the center’s growing suite of technology, as well as dedicated spaces offering concurrent, cardio-infused classes with names like GTX, Alpha and Ultra Fit. Touchscreen-operated massage chairs that kneed muscles with jets of water line the new exercise recovery room at Life Time Highland Park, which also comes outfitted with compression packs, percussion therapy massage guns and chilly cryotherapy machines. On the same floor, a long strip of sprinting turf offers workouts with a weighted sled. Elsewhere in the building, the national fitness chain has expanded its offerings in everything from Pilates to cardio, converting one of its oldest buildings into one of its most state-of-the-art. Renovations on Ford Parkway Life Time Highland Park, one of the most long-standing businesses in operation on Ford Parkway and one of the first Life Time athletic clubs in the nation, officially debuted more than 20,000 square feet of new street-level space this month, weeks in advance of its 30th anniversary year, with additional renovations touching almost every part of the interior. The building, which Life Time owns, now spans more than 71,000 square feet, with fitness offerings on three floors. “It’s super busy and members are just in awe of the new floor,” said Angie Cameron, the new lead general manager of the Highland Facility. “As part of this remodel, they put ‘Life Time’ on the side of the parking garage, and ‘Love Your Life’ signage on the outside of the addition, which underscores the company’s commitment and investment in this community.” Life Time isn’t the only fitness center that has chosen to invest in St. Paul this year. On Snelling Avenue near University Avenue in the Midway, a husband-and-wife team opened a Hotworx franchise this month. It will offer yoga, Pilates, cycling, rowing, barre and other fitness modalities in high-temperature, sauna-like studio rooms led by video instructors. Another fitness chain, Discover Strength — personal-trainer-driven strength training — plans to open in St. Paul next April. Co-working spaces Parham Javaheri, chief property development officer with Life Time, said the glass-enclosed, ground-level addition at Highland Park adds about 40% more area to club offerings, while effectively doubling the multi-level club’s occupancy capacity for group fitness, personal training, cardio and other workout modalities. The addition previously hosted a Fairview clinic, which moved out this year, and follows major Life Time renovations in White Bear Lake and Woodbury. A new Rosemount club built from the ground up opens Dec. 27. Up next? In coming months, Life Time Highland Park plans to seek permitting for new high-end co-working spaces — a nod toward the convergence of fitness, work and play in the era of remote office work — and an innovation that Life Time already introduced in Edina, downtown Minneapolis and its West End facility in St. Louis Park. Life Time began debuting Life Time Work adjacent to select fitness center locations across the country in 2018, and the company plans a similar addition on the upper levels of the Highland Park facility, which is currently the headquarters of the chain’s Experience Life Magazine. “With the residential space moving into the former Ford plant, and so many families moving in there, it was time to reimagine that club,” Javaheri said. “The timing of what’s been happening in that specific Highland Park neighborhood was an impetus to get it done immediately. It’s just been a great development. There’s so much vibrancy around there, and we’re excited to add to that landscape.” Additional offerings In its promotional material, the Chanhassen-based Life Time chain notes the Highland addition offers “dedicated spaces for exclusive programs and (a) host of new wellness experiences,” including group training areas, cardio and resistance machines for personal training, and the new “recovery zone” featuring massage, massage guns, compression and cryotherapy machines. Also in the building, members have access to metabolic testing, nutrition counseling and a chiropractic clinic. The expanded Life Time also features a new grand staircase connecting floors, dedicated space for signature classes on 10 Olympic platforms, four studios for barre, cycle, yoga and other formats, and a refreshed kids area for those 3 months to 11 years old. The updated LifeSpa offers massage and skin care services, including hydro-facials, waxing and tinting. A public-facing cafe features salads, sandwiches and bowls. The location in 2022 contracted Gayle Winegar, who had previously run the SweatShop Pilates and fitness club on Snelling Avenue, to update and expand its Pilates program. To that end, Life Time Highland Park recently opened a new 3,000-square-foot dedicated studio hosting rows of new equipment and 35 weekly classes led by six instructors. Originally dubbed Life Time Fitness, the publicly-traded Life Time athletic clubs were founded in 1992 by Bahram Akradi and have expanded from an initial center in Brooklyn Park to more than 175 locations and 31 states, serving more than 1.7 million members. The Ford Parkway location opened in November 1995. Related Articles

Ever since it opened at Disneyland in 1969, the Haunted Mansion has spooked and delighted millions and millions of Disney Parks guests from all over the world. Now, with the Disney Treasure's Haunted Mansion Parlor, there is a brand-new way to experience this beloved attraction while in the middle of the ocean on Disney's newest cruise ship. Welcome, Foolish Mortals The Haunted Mansion Parlor feels like the perfect extension of The Haunted Mansion itself and just screams authenticity. From the iconic ticking clock sound to a floating Madame Leota to eerily familiar paintings that hide dark secrets to hitchhiking ghosts and the always wonderful 'Grim Grinning Ghosts,' there is so much love and care put into every inch of this lounge. However, this isn't just a smaller version of the Haunted Mansion. No, this is its own wonderful place with its own story to tell that shouldn't be missed. "We built our own mythology here because we're on a cruise ship, so we wanted it to have a nautical twist to everything," Danny Handke, senior creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, said. "And we built it all around this Captain character who is currently dead but lives on in this place and even in a portrait in the lounge. "This is the Captain's lounge, and the story is he rescued his bride-to-be who is actually a murderous mermaid you can also meet in the parlor. They get engaged and things start to go wrong and that's where the real Haunted Mansion story comes into play. More of the story is then told in various ways around the space and you have the option to discover it on your own and figure out what the lore is." One of the biggest additions to this lore is the centerpiece of the Haunted Mansion Parlor - an aquarium with ghost fish. While this alone seems like a very cool concept, its history goes way back to when the original Haunted Mansion was being developed. "The Haunted Mansion was worked on and developed for 10 years before it opened in 1969 at Disneyland for the first time and there were so many things that didn't make it in," Daniel Jones, executive illusions & effects development at Walt Disney Imagineering, told me. "So, with love, we looked at all these concepts and what really popped out were the Museum of the Weird elements that Imagineer Rolly Crump had worked on. Most of all however, the team and I agreed the Ghost Fish Aquarium was a must because it's the perfect fit." The Museum of the Weird was set to be a companion walkthrough experience to the Haunted Mansion but it never saw the light of day due in part to Walt's passing. Variations of some of the planned pieces of the museum - from the 'Donald Armchair' near the Endless Hallway to the iconic wallpaper - made it into the Haunted Mansion, and now one more of Crump's designs can be celebrated. While this was an exciting prospect for the team, it also proved to be one of the parlor's most difficult challenges. "The Ghost Fish Aquarium was a call it action to my team and I because a lot of illusions and things that we like to do tend to be in the dark and from one point of view and, as you know, the aquarium is the central piece and can be seen from all sides," Joseph said. "You can look through and see other people behind it. So it is, for all intents and purposes, a real fish tank just like you'd normally have but with ghost fish." Getting this bit of "Disney Magic" came down to the wire as it wasn't quite to the standard of Walt Disney Imagineering until after it was already installed on the ship. The aquarium was mocked up and designed four years beforehand but the team was tweaking it up until the last minute to make it what they all knew it could be. "The aquarium is a great example of typical Disney Magic where there's a lot of technology in it but you don't see any of it or don't even question it," Joseph said. "This thing was mocked up and developed probably four years ago and since then we've been kind of tweaking on and off how it would work and what's in it. And, really to the last minute, we didn't have it fully working to what we all knew it could do until it was on the ship, which is pretty late in our process. "The aquarium is a great example of typical Disney Magic where there's a lot of technology in it but you don't see any of it or don't even question it." Grim Grinning Ghosts Galore While Joseph didn't reveal all the tricks that finally brought the aquarium to the finish line, he and Handke did share how Imagineering made the rest of the parlor feel just as real and believable as the ghost fish are. We spoke previously about the paintings that change before your eyes in the parlor, which are very much in the style of those found in the original Haunted Mansion by Marc Davis, but Imagineering once again went above and beyond to honor the past while paving a new way forward. "What we're really proud of about this paintings is a new technique that we use where you can go right up on top of them, put your face right near it, and it looks and seems like a real painting," Joseph shared. "Just like in a museum, you can go up and see the texture of the art, all the brush strokes, and even the glossiness and the matte finish of the oil paint." This is made even more impressive by the fact that these paintings do change and move, from the captain becoming a skeleton to his bride-to-be showing her true form as that murderous mermaid. However, Imagineering was careful never to go too far and leave what we all expect from the Haunted Mansion behind. In fact, their passion for the attraction is one of the main reasons it feels so authentic. This is perhaps seen best in the mirror behind the bar where we see the hitchhiking ghosts, Madame Leota, and more. One route the team could have taken was to update these characters and use modern-day techniques to bring them to a new audience, but they chose a different path. For the character behind the bar, we elected to go with the original Haunted Mansion animated figures," Joseph said. "So, there's no CGI in that because we wanted it to feel like the original from 1969. Those aren't animated cartoon characters that you can see in a video game, they are very analog looking. So, we took a very high ISO camera with high resolution and filmed a whole bunch of the figures in the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland and then amped up the quality and added glow and all that." I know it's cliche to say, but the Haunted Mansion Parlor truly is a love letter to the original attraction and the incredible people who made it into the iconic attraction it is and always will be. To shine a haunted light on that and bring this story to a close, I want to share one final story from Daniel Joseph that just really proves why this is more than just another lounge. "Another character we all loved from the Museum of the Weird was Rolly Crump's Candleman," Joseph said. "Sadly, Rolly passed away during the development of the Haunted Mansion Parlor and we were all saddened by that and the fact he'd never get to see it completed. "So, we knew we wanted to do a bust in there no matter what just like you'd find in the Haunted Mansion, but we then knew the perfect choice was to make it of Rolly. To make it even more special, one of our team members suggested we do Rolly partially as the Candleman and make sure the side of his head that's melting is next to the fireplace. This was a huge honor and another really detailed thought and the authenticity of the design that follows suit with everything else in the Mansion parlor. For more on the Disney Treasure, check out why The Tale of Moana is one of the best shows I've seen on land or sea and why the Plaza de Coco dining experience was one of the most emotional I've had in quite some time. Thanksgiving Travel Latest: Airport strike, staff shortages and weather could impact holiday travel Airports and highways are expected to be jam-packed during Thanksgiving week, a holiday period likely to end with another record day for air travel in the United States. Canadian Press Nov 25, 2024 1:04 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message Travelers prepare to board aircraft near a holiday decoration, top, Monday, Nov. 25, 2024, at Boston Logan International Airport, in Boston. (AP Photo/Steven Senne) Airports and highways are expected to be jam-packed during Thanksgiving week, a holiday period likely to end with another record day for air travel in the United States. AAA predicts that nearly 80 million Americans will venture at least 50 miles from home between Tuesday and next Monday, most of them by car. However, travelers could be impacted by ongoing weather challenges and those flying to their destinations could be grounded by delays brought on by airline staffing shortages and an airport service workers strike . Here's the latest: 2.2 billion packages are expected to ship between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve U.S. airlines are preparing for a Thanksgiving holiday rush, and so are the U.S. Postal Service, United Parcel Service and FedEx. Shipping companies will deliver about 2.2 billion packages to homes and businesses across the U.S. from Thanksgiving to Dec. 31, said Satish Jindel, a shipping and logistics expert and president of ShipMatrix. That’s down from 2.3 billion packages last year. Because the shopping period is a week shorter than in 2023, consumers are shopping further ahead of Black Friday and more purchases are taking place in physical stores, he said. The number of holiday package shipments grew 27% in 2020 and by more than 3% the following year during the pandemic. The numbers have been falling since then, with a projected decline of about 6% this holiday season. Does your airport offer therapy dogs? Looking to de-stress while waiting for your flight? Many airports have a fleet of therapy dogs — designated fidos and puppers that are eager to receive pets and snuggles from weary travelers. Rules and schedules vary from airport to airport, but the group AirportTherapyDogs uses online crowdsourcing to share the locations of therapy dogs across its various social media accounts. Today, Gracie, a toy Australian shepherd, and Budge, an English bulldog, wandered the concourses at Denver International Airport, and an American Staffordshire Terrier named Hugo greeted travelers at Punta Gorda Airport in Florida. Some airports even feature other therapy pals. San Francisco International Airport’s fleet of animals includes a Flemish Giant rabbit and a hypoallergenic pig. What the striking airport workers are saying “We cannot live on the wages that we are being paid,” ABM cabin cleaner Priscilla Hoyle said at a rally earlier Monday. “I can honestly say it’s hard every single day with my children, working a full-time job but having to look my kids in the eyes and sit there and say, ‘I don’t know if we’re going to have a home today.’” Timothy Lowe II, a wheelchair attendant, said he has to figure out where to spend the night because he doesn’t make enough for a deposit on a home. “We just want to be able to have everything that’s a necessity paid for by the job that hired us to do a great job so they can make billions,” he said. ABM said it is “committed to addressing concerns swiftly” and that there are avenues for employees to communicate issues, including a national hotline and a “general open door policy for managers at our worksite.” What are striking Charlotte airport workers’ demands? Employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services cast ballots Friday to authorize the work stoppage at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a hub for American Airlines. They described living paycheck to paycheck while performing jobs that keep planes running on schedule. Most of them earn $12.50 to $19 an hour, union officials said. Rev. Glencie Rhedrick of Charlotte Clergy Coalition for Justice said those workers should make $22 to $25 an hour. The strike is expected to last 24 hours. Several hundred workers participated in the work stoppage. US flights are running normally Forty-four fights have been canceled today and nearly 1,900 were delayed by midday on the East Coast, according to FlightAware . According to the organization’s cheekily named MiseryMap , San Francisco International Airport is having the most hiccups right now, with 53 delays and three cancellations between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. EST. While that might sound like a lot of delays, they might not be so bad compared to last Friday when the airport suffered 671 delays and 69 cancellations. Cutting in line? American Airlines’ new boarding tech might stop you now at over 100 airports In an apparent effort to reduce the headaches caused by airport line cutting, American Airlines has rolled out boarding technology that alerts gate agents with an audible sound if a passenger tries to scan a ticket ahead of their assigned group. This new software won’t accept a boarding pass before the group it’s assigned to is called, so customers who get to the gate prematurely will be asked to go back and wait their turn. As of Wednesday, the airline announced, the technology is now being used in more than 100 U.S. airports that American flies out of. The official expansion arrives after successful tests in three of these locations — Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Tucson International Airport. ▶ Read more about American Airlines’ new boarding technology Tips to make holiday travel a bit easier Travel can be stressful in the best of times. Now add in the high-level anxiety that seems to be baked into every holiday season and it’s clear travelers could use some help calming frazzled nerves. Here are a few ways to make your holiday journey a little less stressful: 1. Make a checklist of what you need to do and what you need to bring 2. Carry your comfort with you — think noise-canceling headphones, cozy clothes, snacks and extra medication 3. Stay hydrated 4. Keep up to date on delays, gate changes and cancellations with your airline’s app ▶ Read more tips about staying grounded during holiday travel The timing of this year’s holiday shapes travel patterns Thanksgiving Day takes place late this year, with the fourth Thursday of November falling on Nov. 28. That shortens the traditional shopping season and changes the rhythm of holiday travel. With more time before the holiday , people tend to spread out their outbound travel over more days, but everyone returns at the same time, said Andrew Watterson, the chief operating officer of Southwest Airlines . “A late Thanksgiving leads to a big crush at the end,” Watterson said. “The Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday after Thanksgiving are usually very busy with Thanksgiving this late.” Airlines did a relatively good job of handling holiday crowds last year, when the weather was mild in most of the country. Fewer than 400 U.S. flights were canceled during Thanksgiving week in 2023 — about one out of every 450 flights. So far in 2024, airlines have canceled about 1.3% of all flights. Advice for drivers Drivers should know that Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons will be the worst times to travel by car, but it should be smooth sailing on freeways come Thanksgiving Day, according to transportation analytics company INRIX. On the return home, the best travel times for motorists are before 1 p.m. on Sunday, and before 8 a.m. or after 7 p.m. on Monday, the company said. In metropolitan areas like Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle and Washington, “traffic is expected to be more than double what it typically is on a normal day,” INRIX transportation analyst Bob Pishue said. FAA staffing shortage could cause flight delays Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Mike Whitaker said last week that he expects his agency to use special measures at some facilities to deal with an ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers. In the past, those facilities have included airports in New York City and Florida. “If we are short on staff, we will slow traffic as needed to keep the system safe,” Whitaker said. The FAA has long struggled with a shortage of controllers that airline officials expect will last for years, despite the agency’s lofty hiring goals. Thanksgiving travel, b y the numbers 5. Auto club and insurance company AAA predicts that nearly 80 million Americans will venture at least 50 miles from home between Tuesday and next Monday. Most of them will travel by car. 6. Drivers should get a slight break on gas prices . The nationwide average price for gasoline was $3.06 a gallon on Sunday, down from $3.27 at this time last year. 7. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 18.3 million people at U.S. airports during the same seven-day stretch. That would be 6% more than during the corresponding days last year but fit a pattern set throughout 2024. 8. The TSA predicts that 3 million people will pass through airport security checkpoints on Sunday; more than that could break the record of 3.01 million set on the Sunday after the July Fourth holiday. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be the next busiest air travel days of Thanksgiving week. ▶ Read more about Thanksgiving travel across the U.S. Charlotte airport workers strike over low wages Workers who clean airplanes, remove trash and help with wheelchairs at Charlotte’s airport, one of the nation’s busiest, went on strike Monday to demand higher wages. The Service Employees International Union announced the strike in a statement early Monday, saying the workers would demand “an end to poverty wages and respect on the job during the holiday travel season.” The strike was expected to last 24 hours, said union spokesperson Sean Keady. Employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services cast ballots Friday to authorize the work stoppage at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a hub for American Airlines. The two companies contract with American, one of the world’s biggest carriers, to provide services such as cleaning airplane interiors, removing trash and escorting passengers in wheelchairs. ▶ Read more about the Charlotte airport workers’ strike Northeast should get needed precipitation Parts of the Midwest and East Coast can expect to see heavy rain into Thanksgiving, and there’s potential for snow in Northeastern states. A storm last week brought rain to New York and New Jersey, where wildfires have raged in recent weeks, and heavy snow to northeastern Pennsylvania. The precipitation was expected to help ease drought conditions after an exceptionally dry fall. Heavy snow fell in northeastern Pennsylvania, including the Pocono Mountains. Higher elevations reported up to 17 inches (43 centimeters), with lesser accumulations in valley cities including Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. Around 35,000 customers in 10 counties were still without power, down from 80,000 a day ago. In the Catskills region of New York, nearly 10,000 people remained without power Sunday morning, two days after a storm dumped heavy snow on parts of the region. Precipitation in West Virginia helped put a dent in the state’s worst drought in at least two decades and boosted ski resorts as they prepare to open in the weeks ahead. ▶ Read more about Thanksgiving week weather forecasts More rain expected after deadly ‘bomb cyclone’ on West Coast Two people died in the Pacific Northwest after a rapidly intensifying “ bomb cyclone ” hit the West Coast last Tuesday, bringing fierce winds that toppled trees and power lines and damaged homes and cars. Hundreds of thousands lost electricity in Washington state before powerful gusts and record rains moved into Northern California. Forecasters said the risk of flooding and mudslides remained as the region will get more rain starting Sunday. But the latest storm won’t be as intense as last week’s atmospheric river , a long plume of moisture that forms over an ocean and flows over land. “However, there’s still threats, smaller threats, and not as significant in terms of magnitude, that are still going to exist across the West Coast for the next two or three days,” weather service forecaster Rich Otto said. As the rain moves east throughout the week, Otto said, there’s a potential for heavy snowfall at higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada, as well as portions of Utah and Colorado. California’s Mammoth Mountain, which received 2 feet (0.6 meters) of fresh snow in the recent storm, could get another 4 feet (1.2 meters) before the newest system clears out Wednesday, the resort said. Forecasts warn of possible winter storms across US during Thanksgiving week Another round of wintry weather could complicate travel leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday, according to forecasts across the U.S., while California and Washington state continue to recover from storm damage and power outages. In California, where two people were found dead in floodwaters on Saturday, authorities braced for more rain while grappling with flooding and small landslides from a previous storm . Here’s a look at some of the regional forecasts: 9. Sierra Nevada: The National Weather Service office issued a winter storm warning through Tuesday, with heavy snow expected at higher elevations and wind gusts potentially reaching 55 mph (88 kph). Total snowfall of roughly 4 feet (1.2 meters) was forecast, with the heaviest accumulations expected Monday and Tuesday. 10. Midwest and Great Lakes: The Midwest and Great Lakes regions will see rain and snow Monday and the East Coast will be the most impacted on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, forecasters said. 11. East Coast: A low pressure system is forecast to bring rain to the Southeast early Thursday before heading to the Northeast. Areas from Boston to New York could see rain and breezy conditions, with snowfall possible in parts of northern New Hampshire, northern Maine and the Adirondacks. If the system tracks further inland, there could be less snow and more rain in the mountains, forecasters said. ▶ Read more about Thanksgiving week weather forecasts The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Your relationship with money might seem random, but one expert says it offers clues about your childhood — and understanding this could help overcome toxic spending habits. Vicky Reynal, a financial psychotherapist and author of "Money on Your Mind," told CNBC Make It that there are psychological reasons behind our spending habits, and many of these attitudes stem from childhood experiences. > 24/7 San Diego news stream: Watch NBC 7 free wherever you are "Our emotional experiences growing up will shape who we become," she said. For example, someone who felt secure during childhood might feel that they deserve good things, and later in life may be more likely to negotiate a higher salary or enjoy the money they have, Reynal said. Whereas someone who experienced childhood neglect may grow up with low self-esteem and act this out through money behaviors. This could include feeling guilty when spending money because they don't feel they deserve good things, or splashing the cash to impress because they feel unworthy of attention. "The little toddler that goes up to their parents to show them their scribble — how they get responded to will give them a message about how the world will respond to them," Reynal added. Money Report Political leaders and industry titans pay tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh China's industrial profits extend decline to a fourth straight month, dropping 7.3% in November Reynal said "the money lessons we learn growing up" are largely shaped by whether we grew up in an environment of scarcity or wealth. "To give you an example, growing up in scarcity, people that manage to move themselves out of that economic reality, and maybe in their own adult life manage to accumulate quite a bit of wealth, it's quite common for them to struggle with what they call the scarcity mindset," Reynal said. This is a pattern of thinking that fixates on the idea that you don't have enough of something, like money. A scarcity mindset means someone might struggle to enjoy the money they've earned and be anxious about spending it, Reynal added. Alternatively, there are people who grew up with little but became wealthy, and are now very careless with money. "They're giving themselves everything that they longed for when they were little so they might go on the other extreme and start spending it quite carelessly, because now they want to give their children everything that their parents couldn't give them," Reynal added. The key to overcoming toxic spending habits is to stop self-sabotaging — a common behavior — according to Reynal. "Often behind a pattern of financial self-sabotage, there are deep-seated emotional reasons, and it could range from feelings of anger, feelings of un-deservedness, to maybe a fear of independence and autonomy," she said. To identify these, you first have to determine what your financial habits and inconsistencies are, Reynal said, giving an example of someone who might overspend in the evenings. "Is it boredom? Is it loneliness? What is the feeling that you might be trying to address with the overspending?" she said. "That's already giving you a clue as to what you could be doing different. So, if it's boredom, what can you replace this terrible financial habit with?" Reynal said she had a young client who would always run out of money within the first two weeks of the month. She asked them: "What would happen if you were financially responsible?" The client revealed that they feared risking their relationship with their mother because every time they ran out of money, they called their mother to ask for more. "Their parents had divorced a long time ago, and the only time they ever spoke to their mother was to ask for money," Reynal said. "They had a vested interest in being bad with money, because if they were to become good with money, then they had the problem of: 'I might not have an excuse to call mother anymore and I don't know how to build that relationship again'." The financial psychotherapist recommended being "curious and nonjudgmental" when considering the root of bad spending behavior. "So sometimes asking ourselves: "What feelings would I be left with if I actually didn't self-sabotage financially, or if I weren't so generous with my friends?' That can start to reveal the reason why you might be doing it," she added. Don't make these 3 mistakes, experts warnThe Indian rupee took a major beating in 2024 as concerns regarding weak economic growth and the global strength of the American dollar weighed on the currency. The domestic unit tanked 3 per cent in the year, however, it managed to remain among the least volatile currencies in the world. Going ahead, experts said that headwinds are expected to be less intense in 2025. With a series of geopolitical conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war, the crisis in the Middle East, trade disruptions in the Red Sea, and elections across global economies, the currency suffered in 2024, reported PTI. Global factors such as the measures taken by major central banks impacted the rupee-dollar dynamics, and also disturbed the exchange rates of currencies across emerging economies. In comparison to the euro and the Japanese yen, the rupee ended up with gains, the report said. Notably, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s former governor, Shaktikanta Das, earlier said that the domestic currency remained less volatile than its peers in the emerging markets. Naveen Mathur, Director - Commodities & Currencies, Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers noted, “Yet, the RBI has been more active in its efforts towards stabilising the rupee-dollar rate, thanks to increased demand for the greenback due to India's dependence on oil imports and the widening trade deficit. RBI was also seen intervening actively in NDF (non-deliverable forward) markets to prevent sharp depreciation of the rupee.” Also Read : Markets Ahead: Investors To Observe Auto Stocks, Rupee Movements, And Global Trends, Say Analysts Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Mirae Asset Sharekhan, noted that the American dollar outperformed the market and gained 6.9 per cent in the year. The expert attributed this growth to the improvement in the US economy, geopolitical concerns, and weakness in Europe. Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst, Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said that the rupee suffered major weakness in the latter half of 2024, specifically between October and December, weighed down by major outflows from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). During this period, FII outflows touched Rs 1.70 lakh crore nearly and this impacted the performance of the domestic currency. Further, the domestic economy faced major challenges from the global scenario as China’s GDP growth slowed down to 4.8 per cent, resulting in a fall in demand for Indian exports. Additionally, tensions in the Middle East and crisis in the Red Sea led to an escalation in supply chain disruptions and affected the trade balance of multiple countries including India.
