California Assemblyman David Tangipa and political commentator Arynne Wexler analyze Trump’s pick for attorney general and the path to Senate confirmation. Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., resigned from the House last week. That is final. The precedent of the House is that once you bow out, it is done. So, Gaetz cannot revoke his letter of resignation last week. It declared he was stepping aside "effective immediately." As reported earlier, Gaetz could serve in the new Congress. He was duly re-elected to his seat for the new Congress to be seated on Jan. 3. In his letter to the clerk of the House, Gaetz declared, "I do not intend to take the oath of office for the same office in the 119th Congress to pursue the position of Attorney General in the Trump Administration." (Angela Weiss-Pool/Getty Images) However, Fox is told that Gaetz would have to inform the clerk of the House that he, in fact, does intend to serve in the new Congress – if he elects to do so. Gaetz has not signaled his future plans. That part of the Gaetz letter is not binding. Technically, the House Ethics Committee must wrap up its inquiry into Gaetz by the end of this Congress at 11:59:59 am EST on Jan. 3. However, there is precedent for the House Ethics Committee voting to carry over an inquiry from one Congress to another. So it’s not unheard of that this is a done deal. (Brendan Smailowski/AFP via Getty Images) The committee still wants to finish its current work. However, if Gaetz is not going to serve in the new Congress and has withdrawn his nomination for attorney general, this likely diminishes the importance of publicly releasing the report of a former member. Yes, there may be damning information in the report, but the House usually does not release reports about former members – even though there is precedent for doing so. Moreover, the Senate Judiciary Committee isn’t interested in the report, now that Gaetz is not before them as the attorney general nominee. Source: Rivalry Corp. With inflation still elevated, Federal Reserve officials expressed caution at their last meeting about cutting interest rates too quickly, adding to uncertainty about their next moves. Even if inflation continued declining to the Fed’s 2% target, officials said, “it would likely be appropriate to move gradually” in lowering rates, according to minutes of the November 6-7 meeting. The minutes don’t provide much guidance about what the Fed will do at its next meeting Dec. 17-18. Wall Street investors see the odds of another quarter-point reduction in the Fed’s key rate at that meeting as nearly even, according to CME Fedwatch. Most economists think officials will probably cut rates next month for the third time this year, but could then skip cutting at following meetings. Kathy Bostjancic, chief economist at Nationwide, said she expects the Fed will cut its key rate by a quarter-point next month, to about 4.3%. But officials will “likely pause” early next year “to assess prospective policy changes under the second Trump administration as well as the current landscape of economic activity and inflation,” she added in a client note. In September, the Fed signaled it would reduce its key rate as many as four times next year, but since then investors and economists have come to expect fewer cuts. The economy is growing at a solid pace, inflation is showing signs of getting stuck above the Fed’s target, and President-elect Donald Trump’s proposals, particularly higher tariffs, could also accelerate inflation. Inflation fell to 2.1% in September, down from a peak of 7% in mid-2022, providing Fed officials with the confidence to implement a steep half-point reduction in its key rate that month. But excluding the volatile food and energy categories, so-called “core” prices are more elevated, rising 2.7% from a year earlier in September. And they are expected to have risen again last month, when that data is reported Wednesday, to 2.8%. Most officials at last month’s meeting expressed confidence that inflation is steadily falling back to target, the minutes said. Yet they also said that it “remained somewhat elevated” and a couple of officials “noted the possibility that the process could take longer than previously expected.” Nineteen people participate in the Fed’s interest rate policy discussions, though only 12 have a vote. Many of the policymakers also noted that it was uncertain how far the Fed would have to cut its rate. There is broad disagreement among officials about what level of the Fed’s rate would neither restrain nor stimulate growth. As a result, the minutes said, that “made it appropriate to reduce (interest rates) gradually.” The Fed is trying to calibrate its policies so that it doesn’t cut rates too quickly and allow inflation to surge again. At the same time, it doesn’t want to reduce them too slowly, which could drag down hiring and growth. If inflation stayed too high, Fed officials could “pause” their rate cuts, the minutes said, while if the economy slowed and unemployment rose, they could reduce rates more quickly. Already bracing for funding cuts under a new Trump administration, With inflation still elevated, Federal Reserve officials expressed caution at U.S. stocks rose to records Tuesday after Donald Trump’s latest Federal authorities have released an update on the investigation into

Trae Young, Hawks hoping to win big in Vegas at the NBA Cup semifinalsLAHORE: The National Seed Policy is nearing its final stage and will soon be presented to cabinet for approval. The policy aims to address the challenges faced by seed technology companies and is designed to modernize the seed production system in the country, ultimately boosting the yields of cotton and other crops. “The private sector must play a crucial role in the development of Pakistan’s agricultural sector by providing high-quality seeds that have the potential to increase yields,” said Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, the Punjab Agriculture Secretary, during an informal meeting with agriculture reporters on Friday. “The Punjab government is in discussions with both multinational and local companies to stabilize the declining cotton production rather than taking it to past glory,” he added. Sahoo further emphasized that the national seed policy, along with efforts at both the federal and provincial levels, aims to bring a comprehensive system to Pakistan—spanning seed technology to cotton stewardship. He acknowledged that public sector research institutions have struggled to develop high-yielding varieties of crops, pointing out that the breakthroughs in maize and rice production were largely due to the introduction of hybrid seeds by the private sector. “We cannot rely solely on public sector research institutions. The private sector has a vital role to play in developing high-yielding seeds for the country. The government does not view the private sector as a competitor, but rather as a partner. We are ready to support them financially and in any other way necessary to strengthen the agricultural sector,” Sahoo stated. He also shared some of the Punjab government’s efforts to enhance the agricultural sector, noting that the province had successfully achieved its wheat sowing target of 16.5 million acres, despite numerous challenges. He commended the extension staff for their dedication, highlighting their success in meeting the target by the end of the wheat season on December 10. Sahoo revealed that negotiations were ongoing with an international firm to establish a bio-refinery in the province, which would use crop waste, especially rice straw, to produce biofuels. Addressing concerns about smog and its potential impact on crop yields, Sahoo acknowledged that the exact impact on yields had yet to be determined. However, he noted that the government had distributed 1,000 super seeders to rice farmers to prevent the practice of burning rice crop residue, which contributes to smog. He added that next year, the number of super seeders would increase to 5,000. Rice is grown on 6.5 million acres in Punjab, with 3 million acres in the Lahore and Gujranwala divisions alone. He said that mechanical and environmental friendly harvesting is another goal set by the provincial government. Dr Anjum Buttar, Project Director PESP, shared that the government was working on a national pulses project to promote the production of chickpeas (Channa) and mung beans (Mong) to meet growing domestic demand and reduce imports. In addition, the government is promoting off-season sowing of tomatoes and onions, with large areas along the Chenab River already dedicated to these crops. Earlier, the Secretary of Agriculture also discussed various projects such as CM Punjab Kissan Card, Green Tractor Scheme, CM Programme for Solarisation of tube wells, internship programme for agri graduations etc in detail. S&P Dow Jones Indices Announces Dow Jones Sustainability Indices 2024 Review ResultsBoston College’s offense had its moments on Saturday, converting 6 of 13 third downs and amassing 296 passing yards. BC caught Nebraska’s aggressive, blitzing defense with a few screens, coach Matt Rhule said, and Eagles’ quarterback Grayson James kept plays alive with timely scrambles. But Rhule said the Huskers' defense found its footing in the red zone — inside NU’s own 20 — by twice denying the Eagles points when they reached the Nebraska 9 and Nebraska 2. The Huskers, coordinated by John Butler, were trying to make BC attempt field goals. Boston College only attempted four all season, and missed its fifth try early in Saturday’s game. From thereon, BC went for its fourth downs in NU territory. It did not successfully convert one. “They missed the first one, so we felt pretty good about our opportunity — hey, they’re not going to kick one, it’ll be four downs,” Rhule said. “We knew how to address it.” Eight of BC’s drives reached Nebraska territory, producing just 13 of BC’s 15 points. “We were having trouble kicking the ball, so I didn't want to kick it,” Boston College coach Bill O’Brien said. “We were in that area where you're either going to plus-50 and punt it — which we could have done, but we're not great at that — or tried to kick a 50-yard field goal, which we're definitely not ready to do that. “I went for it on 4th down and probably put the defense in a couple tough positions. Look, Nebraska did a good job. We had trouble running the ball, had trouble scoring in the red area. We moved the ball. I think at halftime we had the time of possession, we had yardage, but didn't have the score.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!Robert Braswell scores 19 to help Charlotte earn 77-63 victory over Georgia State

Published 5:00 pm Friday, December 13, 2024 by Thomas Howard Residents and visitors walking downtown will notice stars bearing the names of famous Mississippians embedded in the sidewalk. The Queen City has long been known for its recognition of the arts, and the stars are one of several projects paying homage to those whose efforts put the Magnolia State on the map. A number of events this past week, however, suggest significantly more stars will be needed in the near future. Events put on by both Meridian and Lauderdale County school districts highlighted the immense talent developing among our next generation of leaders and celebrated the effort students put into honing their craft. Email newsletter signup On Monday, Meridian High School students performed “Blue Christmas,” with both choir and band students participating in the concert. On Tuesday, Northwest Middle School held its annual Christmas concert, while at The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience, Lauderdale County School District held its Holiday Showcase highlighting musical, artistic, dance and stage acting talent from students at each of the district’s four campuses. Thursday, MPSD’s youth choir helped set a festive mood as they opened for Mississippi trio Chapel Hart, which brought its Hartfelt Family Christmas Tour at the Temple Theater. The arts are a vital part of Meridian’s community, but even if that were not the case, arts education would remain a critical part of students’ education. According to the University of Florida, arts education is linked to improved academic outcomes, better mental health, increased engagement, reduced disciplinary actions and more. While many students will likely go on to pursue careers other than art, the skills developed by the arts, such as critical thinking and social skills, are highly valued among employers across the board. Thank you to the teachers, administrators, parents, volunteers, sponsoring businesses and all others who had a hand in making this week’s events come to fruition.
