Shares of Trump Media and Technology Group slid in midday trading on Friday after US President-elect Donald Trump transferred all his shares into a revocable trust, according to a regulatory filing. Mr Trump transferred all of his nearly 115 million shares — worth around four billion dollars (£3.2 billion) on paper — in the parent company of social networking site Truth Social as a “bona fide gift” to the Donald J Trump Revocable Trust, the Securities and Exchange Commission filing on on Thursday said. Mr Trump’s shares amount to more than half of the company’s stock. It is not clear why Mr Trump transferred the stock. Donald Trump Jr is the sole trustee and has sole voting and investment power over all securities owned by the trust. Trump Media shares were down about 2% at midday, to 34.68 dollars each. At one point on Friday, they were down around 6%. Trump Media shares have been volatile since the company began trading in March. They reached intraday highs close to 80 dollars (£63.70) on the first day of trading, then slumped to all-time lows in September when Mr Trump and other insiders were finally allowed to sell shares after standard lock-up agreements expired. Mr Trump has not sold any shares in the company. The company’s stock price has fluctuated wildly on news — good and bad — related to Mr Trump. They tumbled after Mr Trump’s conviction in a hush money trial in May, then surged after the first assassination attempt on him in July. They surged again after he won re-election in November, even as the company reported a 19.2 million-dollar (£15.29 million) third-quarter loss. For decades, China has dominated critical minerals, with Canada and the US, among other nations, all too willing to let Beijing do the mining and/ or processing and sell the end-products. Fighting back But Washington has finally begun to recognize its critical minerals vulnerability. The movement to lessen dependence started in 2019 under then-President Donald Trump. Trump authorized the Pentagon to utilize funding available under Title III of the Defense Production Act (DPA) — a tool established during the Cold War to ensure the US could secure goods needed for national security — to support the re-establishment of a US rare earths supply chain. In 2022, a bipartisan group of senators led by Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski and West Virginia’s Joe Manchin wrote to President Joe Biden urging him to authorize the Pentagon to tap into DPA funds to bolster domestic supplies of other critical minerals. The request resonated with President Joe Biden, who used the DPA authority to designate battery minerals and metals – graphite, lithium, nickel, manganese and cobalt – as “essential to the national defense.” For all the partisanship pulling Washington apart, an emerging consensus on critical minerals – and the dangers of Chinese dependency – began to take shape. The result: a bipartisan understanding that China is “the enemy”, with both Democrats and Republicans supporting legislation that keeps Chinese goods behind high tariff walls and other restrictive measures. In fact the US government has committed billions worth of loans and grants to support a domestic critical mineral supply chain — as the country seeks to become more resource-independent and less beholden to China and other countries for minerals critical to a clean-energy future, and to the tech-intensive defense systems that safeguard national security. China’s latest move Earlier this week, the Chinese government showed that it isn’t waiting for the Trump administration to take power in January 2025, to get an edge in the coming trade war. Beijing announced on Tuesday it is banning exports to the United States of several critical minerals and further tightening sales of graphite. The move came after the White House on Monday slapped fresh curbs on the sale of memory chips made by US and foreign companies to China, said Bloomberg , adding the Biden administration’s goal is to slow China’s development of advanced semiconductors and artificial intelligence systems that may help its military. The country’s Commerce Department said gallium, germanium, antimony and superhard materials will no longer be shipped to the US. Bloomberg reported the targeted materials are used in everything from semiconductors to satellites and night-vision googles, but noted China’s sales to the US had already plunged following export restrictions on gallium and germanium announced last year. However, according to the US Geological Survey , a total export ban on gallium and germanium would deliver a $3.4 billion hit to the US economy. Even that may understate the knock-on impact, as these metals and minerals are embedded in larger technology systems increasingly important to U.S. competitiveness. Trump and minerals While Trump has opposed the Biden Inflation Reduction Act and other clean-energy initiatives that are the darlings of progressives, one area that is likely to see a continuance is critical minerals. According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, “Trump voiced his support for domestic mining, which could result in a more profound permitting reform and further financial support for domestic mining projects.” Recall Trump’s support for coal miners during his first presidential term, and his “drill baby drill” mantra bolstering the oil & gas industry. In 2020 Trump declared a national emergency regarding US dependence on a range of critical minerals. Trump has already announced that his administration will “pursue a path towards US energy dominance” that will require substantial amounts of minerals, from tungsten in exploration drill bits to copper in electrical transmission lines. However, according to a recent guest column on Mining.com , fragile mineral supply chains pose a risk to energy dominance; not having sufficient supplies could mean significant delays and may drive up prices. Because many minerals are sourced from a limited number of countries, US energy initiatives are particularly vulnerable to disruptions. Authors Gregory Wischer and Dr. Shubham Dwivedi declare that the most secure source of energy and minerals is domestic production. “Ultimately, the pursuit of US energy dominance could coincide with a push for US mineral independence,” the authors conclude. US manufacturing renaissance Trump’s push for energy independence and support for the mining side of critical minerals is coinciding with a renaissance and a re-think in US manufacturing. It actually started last year with a total investment of $246 billion. Where is all this money coming from? You guessed it: the government. Earlier this week Wolf Street posted an article titled ‘Factory Construction Spending Soars to New Record, +16% YoY, +242% since 2019: Result of Corporate & Strategic Rethink’. The gist of the story is that the Biden administration has been spending billions on manufacturing, but it’s high-tech industry not low-tech. According to the Census Bureau, investments in the construction of manufacturing plants jumped to a record $21.1 billion in October, up by 4% from the prior month, up by 16.3% from a year ago, up by 177% from the beginning of 2022, and up by 242% since 2019. The folly of tariffs Yet all of this, and the mining of critical metals, could be undermined by Trump’s tariff policy. A study on the effects of the 2018-19 tariffs shows that US consumers bore most of the cost. Now Trump is threatening to impose 25% tariffs on all good imported from Mexico and Canada, and 60% from China. 25% tariffs on $974 billion worth of trade into the US in 2022 = $243B worth of tariffs Americans will pay extra for. This isn’t even counting the proposed 60% tariffs on Chinese imports. How long before we all say enough is enough to America’s bullying and start trading more with others? In fact many businesses are expected to shift their production to other countries to avoid paying the exorbitant tariffs, states CNN. Countries likely to benefit from the US-Canada-Mexico-China trade war include Vietnam for low-value goods; nations that can out-compete Mexico on cars, i.e., Japan and South Korea; clothes and shoes from Indonesia, Bangladesh and Cambodia; and Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan for electronics. China has already got the ball rolling by building a port in Chancay, Peru that will bypass North America and allow shipments from South America to go directly to China. Chinese imports will flow tariff-free into countries like Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia. Nearly 150 countries have signed on to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, of which the port is a part. Two mining industry umbrella groups have come out strongly against the Trump tariffs. The Mining Association of Canada says China’s move to ban exports of raw metals to the US underscores the need for trade cooperation between Canada and its southern neighbor. “Imposing tariffs on Canadian mineral and metal exports to the US would run counter to the shared goals of secure and reliable supply chains,” Pierre Gratton, the mining association’s president, said in Tuesday’s statement . More than half of Canada’s mineral exports — valued at more than CAD$80 billion (USD$56.9 billion) — were destined for the US in 2022. According to Black Press Media: Michael Goehring, president and CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia, said Wednesday that China’s decision to ban exports of certain critical minerals and rare earths to the United States demonstrates why it is “vital” for Canada and the U.S. to reduce their dependence on authoritarian regimes for critical mineral supplies and mineral processing... “B.C. has, or produces, 16 of the 50 minerals the United States has identified as being critical to the nation’s economic and national security. In fact, seven per cent of B.C.’s exports to the US in 2022 were critical minerals and metals, including aluminum, germanium, gallium, indium, lead and zinc.”... With 17 new critical mineral projects under development, British Columbia can make what Goehring called “a meaningful contribution to North America’s future”while creating jobs for workers, stability for resource communities and shared prosperity throughout B.C. Conclusion China’s restrictions on graphite and other critical metals are making it harder for the United States to obtain the raw materials required for both economic and defense/ military purposes. Graphite is the ideal material for defense thanks to its unique properties, i.e., it is able to withstand very high temperatures with a high melting point; it is stable at these high temperatures; it is lightweight and easy to machine; and it is corrosion-resistant. Trump says he supports the mining of critical minerals on US soil but he is threatening to impose 25% tariffs on minerals imported from Canada and Mexico. Instead of joining forces with countries friendly to its interests, like Canada, the United States is becoming more insular and protectionist at the same time as China is becoming more outward-looking. While there is little that Canada can do to change Trump’s mind his tariff policy makes greenfield and brownfield mining projects in the United States, free from tariffs, all the more desirable. Graphite One Inc. After her operation, there was not a single cell of cancer (cyst) detected. These remedies do not require any money." Tata Memorial Hospital's statement is signed by 262 present and past oncologists from TMH. It said, "These statements have no high-quality evidence to support them. While research is ongoing for some of these products, there is no clinical data currently to recommend their use as anti-cancer agents." The statement further said, "We urge the public to not delay their treatment by following unproven remedies, but rather to consult a doctor, preferably a cancer specialist, if they have any symptoms of cancer. Cancer is curable if detected early." Only a day prior to the statement, TMH director Dr CS Pramesh took note of the viral video and said in an X (formerly known as Twitter) post, "Please don't believe and get fooled by these statements regardless of who it comes from. These are unscientific and baseless recommendations. She got surgery and chemotherapy that were evidence-based, which is what made her cancer-free. Not the haldi, neem, etc." The video was also rebuked by Hepatologist Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, known as ‘The Liver Doc' on X, popular for his science-driven fact checks. He said in a post, "I know you (Sidhu) are emotional, and emotions make people's thoughts go blind. There is no evidence that any specific diet or herb or Ayurvedic balderdash can prevent, control, or cure cancer." He added, "Studies have shown that complementary and alternative medicines and practices kill cancer patients more than it can delusionally save." Even the prestigious All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, Delhi, rushed to counter Sidhu's claims. Dr Abhishek Shankar, assistant professor, radiation oncology at AIIMS Delhi, said these claims can create false hope and might discourage patients from pursuing necessary cancer treatment, potentially worsening their condition. "I urge you (Sidhu) to advise cancer patients to consult an oncologist like you did for your wife to explore the best treatment options suited to individual needs," he said. Dr P K Julka, vice-chairman Max oncology, said cancer treatment should follow scientific norms. "New claims, if any, need to be proved by scientific means," he said.

McCourt, who formerly owned the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, said he has received verbal funding commitments totaling $20 billion from a consortium of investors to rescue the app from legal purgatory as it awaits a Supreme Court decision to determine if it will be forced to sell its U.S. operations. His vision for TikTok includes revamping the company's advertising model so that users will have control over the ads and type of content they want to see. Over time, TikTok could earn revenue through ecommerce and licensing data for artificial intelligence training models - with users' consent - which will diminish the business' reliance on ads. "When you give permission for your data to be used and you receive compensation, it's flipping this 180 degrees and giving the user the power," McCourt said this week. The plan faces several hurdles, including TikTok's repeated assertions that it cannot be divested from its owner, Chinese tech firm ByteDance. McCourt said the bid for TikTok would exclude the algorithm that determines the content that users see, in order to reduce complications for ByteDance. The Chinese government in 2020 added content recommendation algorithms to its export-control list, requiring a divestiture or sale of TikTok's algorithm to go through its administrative licensing procedures. TikTok's appeal to the Supreme Court is a last-ditch effort to overturn a law signed by U.S. President Joe Biden that seeks to force a sale over national security concerns, or else the app will be banned on Jan. 19. McCourt said he believes the Supreme Court will uphold the law, after which ByteDance could be open to negotiations. Until then, he is focused on smoothing the path to an acquisition. McCourt said he and his team have had "preliminary conversations" with members of President-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration. Trump tried to ban TikTok in 2020 but has since reversed his view, saying on Dec. 16 that he has "a warm spot in my heart for TikTok." A spokesperson for Trump did not respond to a request for comment. The team is also speaking with potential CEO candidates for the new TikTok, McCourt said. One source familiar with the matter said the team approached V. Pappas, TikTok's former chief operating officer. Pappas did not respond to a request for comment. McCourt declined to name who he is speaking with for the CEO role. The plan for TikTok will also include migrating its technology onto an open-source protocol developed by Project Liberty, an organization founded by McCourt. The protocol would allow users to control their data and easily move it elsewhere on the internet. The plan is influencing the search for a CEO. Kuma’s office has been testing out AI for its work since around the beginning of last year. AI has helped the 400-member staff manage 400 projects in Japan and overseas. The time saved has been spent meeting with clients or coming up with new ideas. Kuma uses AI not only to streamline his work but also create new designs by getting ideas from images generated by AI, with the aim of “surpassing the current Kengo Kuma.” After seeing the AI-generated designs, which were created after AI learned Kengo Kuma’s architecture, Kuma said he felt inspired to “become the next version of [himself].” However, through using AI, Kuma came to the realization that there are many jobs that can only be done by humans. As design requires the subtleties of humans, Kuma said: “I make decisions by reading the mood of the times while watching social trends. You can’t get AI to calculate that.” Using AI has made Kuma very aware of the responsibilities that can never be left to machines, making him realize that humans should always make the final decisions in what kind of building should be made based on what design. As AI becomes more widely used, there is a movement to have AI handle some of the work. A survey conducted by independent administrative agency Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA) found that 16% of the approximately 4,900 workers surveyed have either used or were in a position to use AI in their workplace as of March. AI was found to be used for customer inquiries or translations, and IPA believes that the use of AI will further increase. Of the 1,000 respondents who have either used or plan to use AI, about 60% said that the spread of false information and information leaks by AI was a “threat.” Generative AI also has the risk of copyright infringement. The Copyright Law currently allows copyrighted works to be used for machine learning without authorization, except in cases in which it would unfairly harm the author’s interest. Copyright collectives are calling for rights to be protected through such means as the rejection of machine learning. Kuma’s office carefully considers the risks of copyright infringement and other issues and educates its staff about information security. A man who hit a woman to the head with a wooden stick causing serious injuries that required surgery has been released on parole despite an assessment showing the risk of him re-offending was “high”. Brendan James Cotter, 49, was granted parole from November 11 with special conditions including that he wear an electronic monitoring device, be electronically monitored and “not contact, approach, threaten, follow, stalk, harass or keep under surveillance the registered victim/s of your offending”. He was sentenced to five years’ jail in 2021 after being convicted on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm in Hobart. “This offending involved a serious incident, in which the applicant tracked down the victim, after forming a grievance against her and choosing to seek retribution and attacked her in a residence she had been temporarily staying at, with a wooden stick he used as a weapon,” the Parole Board said in its decision. “The victim sustained serious injuries to her head and body, requiring surgical repair. “The judge described the offending as premeditated, serious violence, which is abhorrent and of great concern to the community.” Legalities of tying the knot. It said Cotter served three-and-a-half years of his sentence and “there has been some prison offending reported”. The board said that while he was in prison he had reflected on his actions and he recognised the lasting effects his offending will have on his victim. It said given concerns by community corrections and the board about Cotter’s risk of re-offending, a psychological report and risk assessment was requested from Dr Amy Washington. “Regarding the risk of re-offending, Dr Washington reported this was high but would be reduced if the applicant can recommence his employment in the community, if he maintains support for alcohol use and attempts to maintain pro-social networks,” the board said. Prior to his imprisonment it said Cotter was self-employed running two businesses relating to water proofing. “The applicant has suitable accommodation, good prospects of suitable work in the community, and is willing and motivated to change his life, by amongst other things continuing to engage in appropriate counselling to address his alcohol use,” the board said in its decision. A rape allegation against rapper Jay-Z, whose company Roc Nation has produced some of the NFL’s entertainment presentations including the Super Bowl halftime show, will not affect the league’s relationship with the music mogul. “We’re aware of the civil allegations and Jay-Z’s really strong response to that,” NFL (National Football League) commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday after the conclusion of the league’s winter meetings. “We know the litigation is happening now. From our standpoint, our relationship is not changing with them, including our preparations for the next Super Bowl.” A woman who previously sued musician Sean “Diddy” Combs, alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 when she was 13 years old, amended the lawsuit on Sunday to include a new allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault. Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, said the rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt. The 24-time Grammy Award winner called the allegations “idiotic” and “heinous in nature” in a statement released by Roc Nation. The Huadian Tibet Caipeng PV-Storage Project is located in Naidong District, Shannan City, Tibet, with elevations ranging from 5,046 meters (16,552 feet) to 5,228 meters (17,152 feet). It’s not just a technological feat – it’s a step forward in proving that renewable energy projects can thrive even in the harshest, most remote environments. PowerChina’s Hydropower Bureau Ninth Engineering Division led construction, with Kunming Engineering Corporation serving as the general contractor. Construction of the second 100 MW phase kicked off in August 2024. PowerChina finished the world’s highest-altitude solar plus storage project in 155 days, 42 days ahead of schedule, by using pre-installed mounts and on-site assembly lines. The entire project has a hefty 150 MW capacity. It features 170,000 solar panels paired with a 20 MW/80 MWh energy storage system.
