The Federal Minister visited the CCP head office Tuesday to receive a comprehensive briefing on the Commission’s performance. Chairman CCP, Dr Kabir Ahmed Sidhu, briefed the Minister on ongoing inquiries, provided details of significant cases pending in courts, and outlined recent initiatives to strengthen the CCP. The briefing was attended by CCP members Saeed Nawaz, Salman Amin and, Abdul Rashid Sheikh, along with senior management. Fighting cartelism: CCP brings enforcement, policy actions under focus Senator Aurangzeb expressed his appreciation for the Commission’s efforts but stressed the importance of adopting modern technologies and data analytics, to monitor and detect cartelization and collusion. He assured CCP of the government’s full support, including budgetary provisions to digitalize the Commission’s operations and implement international benchmarking practices to strengthen its capabilities. “The government is determined to discipline the markets and stop illegal practices at any cost. The Commission has the full backing of the government, and we expect the ongoing inquiries to be completed swiftly. However, it is crucial that the due process is followed, and there is no harassment,” the Minister stated. Dr Sidhu apprised the Minister that there was a backlog of 567 cases involving penalties worth Rs 74 billion. Over the past year, the Commission has made significant progress by recovering Rs 100 million in penalties and resolving 73 cases in courts. He also provided details of the number of pending cases, with around 200 in the Supreme Court, 179 in the Competition Appellate Tribunal, and 146 in various high courts. The goal is to make CCP more effective in its mission to curb market abuse and ensure fair competition,” the Finance Minister concluded. Copyright Business Recorder, 2024UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson was shot and killed on Wednesday morning in what police said was a “brazen, targeted attack” outside a Manhattan hotel where the health insurer was holding an investor conference. The 50-year-old executive was shot at about 6.45am as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel, police said. The gunman appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Mr Thompson from behind and opening fire, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Police have not yet established a motive. “Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” Ms Tisch said, adding that the shooting “does not appear to be a random act of violence”. Mr Thompson was struck at least once in the back and once in the calf, Ms Tisch said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect, dressed in a hooded sweatshirt and carrying a grey backpack, then fled on foot down an alleyway before pedalling an e-bike into Central Park a few blocks away. The shooter was at large, sparking a search that included police drones, helicopters and dogs. “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare,” the insurer’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, said in a statement. “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him,” the company said. “We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.” Police issued a poster showing a surveillance image of the suspect pointing what appeared to be a gun and another image that appeared to show the same person on a bicycle. Police offered a reward of up to 10,000 US dollars (£7,860) for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The killing shook a part of New York City that is normally quiet at that hour, happening about four blocks from where tens of thousands of people are set to gather on Wednesday night for the annual Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree lighting. Mr Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News that the executive told her “there were some people that had been threatening him”. She said she did not have details, but suggested they may have involved issues with insurance coverage. UnitedHealthcare is the insurance arm of the health care giant UnitedHealth Group. The group was holding its annual meeting with investors to update Wall Street on the company’s direction and expectations for the coming year. The company ended the conference early in the wake of Mr Thompson’s death. “I’m afraid that we – some of you may know we’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members,” a company official told attendees, according to a transcript. “And as a result, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today. I’m sure you’ll understand.” Mr Thompson, a father of two sons, had been with the company since 2004 and served as chief executive for more than three years. UnitedHealthcare is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the US and manages health insurance coverage for employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programmes. Minnesota governor Tim Walz posted on the social platform X that the state is “sending our prayers to Brian’s family and the UnitedHealthcare team”. “This is horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota,” the Democrat wrote.None
Zack Snyder doesn’t seem to be all that worried about AI disrupting the filmmaking world, bringing scores of novices to the fold. At WIRED’s The Big Interview event in San Francisco on Tuesday, the director told managing editor Hemal Jhaveri that “every single person has a pretty good movie camera on their phone and yet we don’t have—right this second, anyway—millions of awesome movies being uploaded out of peoples’ pockets.” The Big Interview For the first time, WIRED’s iconic series came to life on stage with a series of unforgettable, in-depth live conversations. Check out more highlights here . That doesn’t mean he thinks Hollywood creatives can avoid AI altogether. “Educating yourself and understanding what it can and can’t do is important right now, especially where it exists in image-making and storytelling,” Snyder said. “You have to understand what it is and what it’s not capable of, and you have to be able to use it as a tool as opposed to standing on the sidelines with your hands on your hips.” While Snyder says he still sometimes questions the “why” of AI filmmaking, asking what the point of using the technology would be if you just want to shoot footage of someone sitting in a chair in a living room, for instance, he also acknowledges the technology’s potential to make some shots more accessible. “AI doesn’t care if a house is on fire or if it’s on Mars or whether it’s underwater,” he told Jhaveri. “All the things that might cost a filmmaker a lot of money to shoot are, to the AI, no different.” Snyder says he’s especially intrigued by the idea of an AI that could understand a movie or filmmaker’s aesthetic core, like if he was able to shoot an actor’s performance and then sync it up with a production designer-created world of sets in some sort of “aesthetic bank.” If an AI could understand what he truly wants—the “motes of dust,” a backlight, overall set design—rather than just convey its interpretation of what it thinks he’s asking, then, he thinks, “the concept is pretty awesome.” As a director who’s made a number of movies, superhero and otherwise, with a massive range of VFX, Snyder says he’s no stranger to “a very virtual world when it comes to filmmaking.” Still, he says, he’s always seen artistic performance at the front of what we eventually see on screen. Everything that’s not an actor is just “context,” he says. “My favorite movies are the ones where I can feel the director’s hand. I want that human point of view to be moving me in a narrative way through a story in a way I wouldn’t have thought of or couldn’t imagine what would happen next,” Snyder says. “As audiences, that’s what we pay for and that’s what we hunger for. How we get to that very human thing, though ... well, that could change.” How audiences see movies could also change, Snyder says, acknowledging that streamers like Netflix have become an absolute juggernaut in the cinematic world. Movies and shows he’s made for the platform have been seen by millions more eyes than might have seen them in the theater, he asserts, and even films classified as “blockbusters” have and will undoubtedly draw a bigger audience if they’re on a bigger streaming service than they would at the box office. As a director, Snyder says, as long as he’s aware that he’s making something that’s exclusively for streaming, then he’s up for the challenge. “It feels rude to say that I’m not an artist if my movie isn’t in the theater,” he told Jhaveri. “If you’re the streamer, you’re paying for the movie, and if you say, ‘This is our format and 250 million people are going to look at it on their phones, probably’ at the very beginning of our conversation, then I have to know that’s the reality. And if that’s the case, then I should be fine with everything that happens afterwards.”
ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan Chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, Tuesday, while slamming the government for slowing down internet services and putting other restrictions on the internet has said that the JI has started a national programme to provide information technology (IT) education to one million youth within next few years under the “Bano Qabil project” of Alkhidmat Foundation. Speaking at the Youth Empowerment Seminar here, he emphasised that the people of Pakistan require uninterrupted internet access. He described the government’s tactics as unbearable, adding that JI would resist these measures. Rehman criticised the government’s approach, stating that instead of fostering growth in the field of IT, it has resorted to using firewalls to control internet access. He argued that this was not only depriving the youth of employment opportunities but also leading to increasing frustration and desperation. He said that new Bano Qabil Centers will also be established in Rawalpindi, following Karachi and Lahore. He was speaking at the Youth Empowerment Session organised by Alkhidmat Foundation on the occasion of International Volunteer Day at Pak-China Center. He congratulated Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan for serving in almost eight major sectors and continuing its mission through projects like earthquake and flood relief, healthcare, education and training of orphans, housing, scholarships, and the BanoQabil program. He praised Alkhidmat Foundation’s efforts in providing thousands of orphaned and destitute children with free education, training, and housing, particularly through its premier educational institutions like Aghosh, which cater to the educational needs of underprivileged children. Vice Ameer Mian Muhammad Aslam, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Punjab North Dr Tariq Saleem, and Alkhidmat Foundation President Dr Rizwan were also present on the occasion. Hafiz Naeem emphasised on provision of employment and development opportunities to the youth in the IT sector and called for ensuring uninterrupted internet facility to the citizens and said that there must be ethical guidelines for the use of technology. He said that the Constitution obliges the state to provide free and quality education to all citizens. However, he said that 25 million children in the country are still deprived of education. Naeem emphasised implementing a uniform curriculum and education system. He stressed the need of implementing the economic system of Islam in the country as the interest-based capitalist system deprives people of equal opportunities and concentrates wealth in a few hands. He reaffirmed JI’s commitment to strive for an Islamic economic system in line with the spirit of the Constitution of Pakistan. Naeem emphasised implementation of Urdu as the national and official language as mandated by the Constitution and upheld by the Supreme Court, calling for all government correspondence, education, and judicial proceedings to be conducted in Urdu.
