Amazon says Robin is currently being used in dozens of warehouses. The others are in a testing stage or haven’t been rolled out widely. But the company says it’s already seeing benefits, such as reducing the time it takes to fulfill orders and helping employees avoid repetitive tasks. However, automation also carries drawbacks for workers , who would have to be retrained for new positions if the robots made their roles obsolete. In October, Amazon held an event at a Nashville, Tennessee, warehouse where the company had integrated some of the robots. The Associated Press spoke with Julie Mitchell, the director of Amazon’s robotic sortation technologies, about where the company hopes to go from here. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity. A: This journey that we’ve been on has taken a couple of years. Luckily for us, we’ve been at this for over a decade. So we have a lot of core technology that we can build on top of. We started these particular robots – Cardinal and Proteus – in this building in November 2022. We came in and began playing around with what it would look like to pack and move a production order. Less than two years later, we are at scale and shipping 70% of the items in this building through that robotics system. A: We talk about “build, test and scale” and that’s about a two-year cycle for us right now. A: As you can probably imagine, we have so many items, so it’s an exceptional challenge. We rely on data and putting our first prototype in a real building, where we expose it to all the things we need it to do. Then we drive down all the reasons that it fails. We give it a lot of sample sizes in a very short period of time. For example, a couple of years ago, we launched our Robin robotics arm – a package manipulation robot – and we’re at 3 billion picks. So the ability to launch into our network, rapidly collect data, scale and iterate has enabled us to go fast. The challenge itself can be boiled down to three simple things: you need to perceive the scene, plan your motion and then execute. Today, those are three different parts of our system. Artificial intelligence is going to help us change all of that, and it’s going to be more outcome-driven, like asking it to pick up a bottle of water. We’re on the verge, so that’s why I’m personally excited to be here at the onset of generative AI and use it to dramatically improve the performance of our robotics. A: With the technology we’ve deployed here, we’re creating new roles for individuals that can acquire new skills to fulfill those roles. And these new skills are not something that is too difficult to achieve. You don’t need an engineering degree, Ph.D. or any really technical skills to support our robotics systems. We designed the systems so they’re easy to service and train on the job to be a reliability maintenance engineer. We are working backwards from the idea that we want to employ more skilled labor. These opportunities are obviously higher paid than the entry level jobs in our buildings. And partnering with MIT has helped us understand what matters most to our team as we’re deploying these technologies across our network. A: Not in the adoption. We’re integrating it. But these are complex systems and this is the real world, so things go wrong. For example, we had bad weather due to the storms in the Southeast. When I look at the robotics systems data, I can tell the weather is bad outside because that dramatically affects how the ship dock works. When trucks don’t arrive on time or when they can’t leave, you see bottlenecks in the building in strange ways. Containers build up, we have to put them in different places, and then humans need to recover them. So communication between what our robotics system is doing and what we need employees in the building to do to recover is important. It’s a collaboration of automation and humans to deal with real-world problems. It’s not a matter of having robotics take over but making it one system of humans and robotics working together to accomplish the goal of shipping the product.



NEW YORK (AP) — Thousands of Microsoft 365 customers worldwide reported having issues with services like Outlook and Teams on Monday. In social media posts and comments on platforms like outage tracker Downdetector, some impacted said that they were having trouble seeing their emails, loading calendars or opening other Microsoft 365 applications such as Powerpoint. Microsoft acknowledged “an issue impacting users attempting to access Exchange Online or functionality within Microsoft Teams calendar” earlier in the day. In updates posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, the company’s status page said it identified a “recent change” that it believed to be behind the problem — and was working to revert it. Microsoft shared that it was deploying a fix — which, as of shortly before noon E.T., it said had reached about 98% of “affected environments.” Still, the company’s status page later added , targeted restarts were “progressing slower than anticipated for the majority of affected users.” As of midday Monday, Downdetector showed thousands of outage reports from users of Microsoft 365 , particularly Outlook .

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) has become the first Senate Democrat to join President-elect Donald Trump ’s social media site — and used his first post to again call for Trump to be pardoned in his hush money case. “The Trump hush money and Hunter Biden cases were both bullshit, and pardons are appropriate,” the Pennsylvania senator wrote on Tuesday. “Weaponizing the judiciary for blatant, partisan gain diminishes the collective faith in our institutions and sows further division.” Last week, Fetterman made a similar argument on “The View.” “I think that it’s undeniable that the case against Hunter Biden was really politically motivated, but I also think it’s true that the trial in New York for Trump — that was political, as well,” Fetterman told the hosts. “In both cases, I think a pardon is appropriate and I really think, collectively, that American’s confidence in these kinds of institutions [has] been damaged by these kinds of cases, and we cannot allow these kinds of institutions to be weaponized against our political opponents,” he added. So where does she get this ability to remain even keel at all times? “From her mom,” Shuwanda Turner laughed, but she was also serious. “Calm, cool and collected ... she always knows her purpose. I know my purpose.” Trinity agrees. “Yeah, I get it from my momma,” she smiled. “I don’t know.” Georgia coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson is amazed at Turner’s natural ability. “She just has it. I can’t explain what it is, but she has it,” said the coach, whom the players call Coach Abe. In her third season at Georgia since coming over from UCF, Abe has been impressed though not surprised. “Whoooo, she just has a lot of charisma, a lot of poise for being a freshman. It’s crazy,” Coach Abe said. “You can’t teach her what she brings us. That is just natural talent. “And the team loves her and that’s what is awesome about it.” She’s already a leader for Coach Abe, who knew she needed to get on Trinity’s good side the first time she saw her. From middle school to high school to college, we’re just thankful she’s able to do her thing.” The Turners are no longer married, buy they sit a few rows apart and admire their daughter. “Oh my goodness, I am ecstatic,” Mom said. “Just watching her play since she was age 3, playing with the bigger girls at all times, and I knew she would be ready for this one day, but seeing her out there on the floor now with the Bulldogs is very exciting for me.” She’ll likely take the SEC by storm this season as the Bulldogs get further into conference play, and then perhaps the bigger stage and the WNBA. “One team at a time, one step at a time,” said her mother. “That’s always been a dream, so we’re very supportive and hopefully we’ll see her on the bigger platform.” “We’re gonna see,” Trinity said. She said the college game is much different than what she was used to, but she hasn’t missed a beat. “It’s way different than high school,” Trinity laughed. “It’s different intensity, different everything ... a different program, so it’s like a changed mindset.” But she was ready for the challenge, as evidenced by her quick adapting to the college game. She runs the floor like a veteran, pushing the ball up the court — always at a breakneck pace — with few mistakes. Thursday was not a good night for Turner, back in her hometown with her family, former coach, former teammates and friends all in attendance. She had hoped to perform to her usual level. Whether it was the pressure to perform or just nerves with everyone there to watch her, or perhaps it was a lingering cold that she was battling, or perhaps a slightly sprained ankle she has been dealing with ... still, no excuses for Turner. “I had way too many turnovers,” Turner said, after coughing up the ball an uncharacteristic six times against Tulsa. She also had a tough night from the field going 3-of-12 with just 7 points but she still managed to play 32 minutes. She was carrying around a box of tissues she kept under her seat on the bench to help with the cold. You could not tell she was ailing from her intensity. Turner is always focused, hellbent to get the job done play by play. She will likely continue to set records as she rolls through her Georgia career, but that’s no concern to Turner. All she wants to do is play the game she loves. “Just stepping up when I need to, it definitely feels good, but I don’t care about all that stuff though,” said Turner, who is eager to get ramped up in SEC play. “I’m excited about that. It’s just a lot of hard work that is going to continue to get done, keep practicing hard.” Georgia will play its second game in the WBCA State Farm Showcase on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. The 26-year-old man charged in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO appeared in a Pennsylvania courtroom on Tuesday, where he was denied bail and his lawyer said he’d fight extradition to New York City, where the attack happened. Luigi Nicholas Mangione was arrested Monday in the Dec. 4 attack on Brian Thompson after they say a worker at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, alerted authorities to a customer who resembled the suspected gunman. When arrested, Mangione had on him a gun that investigators believe was used in the attack and writings expressing anger at corporate America, police said. As Mangione arrived at the courthouse Tuesday, he struggled with officers and shouted something that was partly unintelligible but referred to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” Mangione is being held on Pennsylvania charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors have charged him with five counts, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Here are some of the latest developments: Wearing an orange jumpsuit, Mangione mostly stared straight ahead during the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair, or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion but was quieted by his lawyer. Judge David Consiglio denied bail to Mangione, whose attorney, Thomas Dickey, told the court that his client did not agree to extradition and wants a hearing on the matter.
