A New York state agency is requesting a federal recall of a toy helicopter that testing found contains high lead levels. The New York Department of State's Division of Consumer Protection urged the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to recall the MAXX Action toy helicopter. The toy is distributed by Old East Main Co. and sold at Dollar General. The toy's black window paint has a total lead content of 160 parts per million, exceeding the federal limit 90 ppm. "During routine product testing, our Division of Consumer Protection has found that the MAXX Action helicopter toy poses a serious health risk to children due to high levels of lead," New York Secretary of State Walter Mosley said. "I urge Dollar General to pull this item from its shelves immediately and for the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue a recall of this product." Lead exposure can cause developmental problems in child. It can also cause physical health problems, such as anemia and kidney damage. New York Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald noted that toys containing lead are among the sources of lead exposure in children, especially younger children who could put the toys in their mouths. "Parents and guardians should have the peace of mind to know that the toys they buy for their children are safe and free from toxic substances," McDonald said. "Products that are found to violate established health and safety standards should be removed from store shelves and a recall should be issued." The state Division of Consumer Protection provided guidance to consumers buying toys for children, including purchasing for age-appropriate toys, reading labels and warnings, maintaining toys and disposing of broken toys, and ensuring that fabric toys are labeled as flame-resistant or flame-retardant. Anyone with a MAXX Action helicopter can dispose of the toy or set it aside if there is a federal recall.
