Police in eastern Ontario charged a Toronto resident who was allegedly in possession of hundreds of grams of cocaine earlier this month. Officers with the Gananoque Police Service conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle suspected of transporting drugs on Dec.13, a news release said. A search completed with the assistance of K9 led to the discovery of a hidden compartment inside the vehicle. Police seized approximately 454 grams of cocaine with a street value of $48,500. A loaded .40 calibre handgun and $1,165 in cash were also taken. A 27-year-old suspect from Scarborough was arrested on various firearms and drugs charges. They were held in custody for a bail hearing. Gananoque is located approximately 170 kilometres southwest of Ottawa. New Delhi, Dec 29 (IANS): E-commerce company Snapdeal has managed to cut down its loss to Rs 160.38 crore in FY24 from Rs 282.20 crore in FY23. Apart from this, the company's Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortisation (EBITDA) loss declined by 88 per cent to Rs 16 crore in FY24. It was Rs 144 crore in FY23. The reason for the reduction in the company's loss is the decline in expenses. The company's total expenditure in FY24 was Rs 540.76 crore. It was Rs 687.93 crore in FY23. The employee benefits expenditure of the company in FY24 declined by 48.5 per cent on YoY (year-on-year) basis to Rs 158.4 crore. It was Rs 307.53 crore in FY23. During this period, the company's advertising expenditure was reduced by 23.5 per cent on YoY basis to Rs 70.37 crore. Snapdeal's operating income increased by 2.1 per cent to Rs 379.76 crore in FY24 from Rs 371.96 crore in FY23. Market services have the biggest contribution of Rs 252.55 crore to the company's revenue. However, it decreased by 9.6 percent on YoY basis as compared to FY23. The company's enablement income increased by 14.8 per cent year-on-year to Rs 103.36 crore in FY24. The company's income from other items has increased 8 times to Rs 23.85 crore in the last financial year. According to the stock exchange filing, Snapdeal has reduced its stake in Unicommerce. Most of the time, high-quality options carry on in a niche way, but they become more expensive or inconvenient, relatively speaking, and fewer people either remember what they’re missing, or are willing or able to pay the extra. PEOPLE LIKE AI CONTENT WHEN THEY DON’T KNOW IT’S AI There are, of course, plenty of counter-examples of products which have improved in quality over time, such as computers and phones. All the same, my realisation about music left me with the question: What is there in the world today which people will have qualitynesia about in the future? One obvious place to look is the creative sector upon which AI is now beginning to encroach. Research so far suggests that when people know something “creative” was made by AI, they find it mediocre and soulless. But if they don’t know, they quite like it. A recent study found that people couldn’t distinguish AI-generated poems from human ones, and actually preferred AI poems “in the style of” famous poets such as William Shakespeare and Sylvia Plath to real poems by those poets. The researchers’ theory is that the AI poems were less challenging. Similarly, Coca-Cola’s new AI-made Christmas advert, a version of its famous Holidays Are Coming one from the 1990s, was popular when tested on people who weren’t told it was AI. Andrew Tindall from System One, which performed the tests, told me that was because the AI version was leaning heavily on "a great creative idea invented over 30 years ago, by a human marketing team that has built that idea and invested in it over 30 years". That sounds reassuring for people who want to believe in the irreplaceable value of human creativity. And in any case, just because people liked one AI advert doesn’t mean they would enjoy AI films or novels, which matter more to most of us. STEADILY WORSENING REMIXES What’s more, history does offer some examples of people reacquiring a taste for quality. A new generation of young people is now driving a small rise in CD sales, for example. Yet the unsettling thought lingers. If people do like AI-remixes of familiar-feeling, once-human content, and if they’re increasingly hard to detect and much cheaper to produce, we could drift into a world of steadily worsening remixes of previous remixes of previous remixes. And by that point, would we even know what we’d lost? Some consider this job to be one of, if not the, best job available this offseason. The Chicago Bears do not have a bad team. There is a lot of talent on the roster. There just has to be some improvements made on both the offensive and defensive lines. The most important thing is that it appears they have the right quarterback in Caleb Williams . And, of course, the coaching staff. The Bears have had their problems with the coaching staff. They lost two of them due to off-field problems. They also had to fire two offensive coordinators due to offensive struggles. All that has happened in just over the past calendar year. Now the team hopes to get it right for the first time in five chances since they fired Lovie Smith in 2012. The fifth time is the charm, right? Additionally, he has worked with some very good quarterbacks such as Dak Prescott , Justin Herbert , and Jalen Hurts . Moore has seen what helped these quarterbacks succeed. He can evaluate Williams and use what he learned from those others and utilize some of those skill sets on Williams. Moore has, for the most part, succeeded in running offenses. In three of his four season with the Dallas Cowboys, his offenses ranked no lower than sixth in points scored. He did not experience the same success with the Los Angeles Chargers last season. However, that had to do with Herbert being injured for most of the season. This season Moore’s offense is once again humming. The Philadelphia Eagles rank seventh in points this season. Hurts is having the best season of his career with Moore helping him. It is a big reason why they are 10-2, one game behind the Detroit Lions for the top seed in the NFC. The Eagles are trying to make their second Super Bowl run in three seasons. They fell short to the Kansas City Chiefs but hope to come out on top. As they continue to play well, Moore will get a lot more attention from teams wanting a head coach. While Moore does not have head coaching experience he has six seasons with a lot of offensive success under his belt. Additionally, working with some top notch quarterbacks and helping them makes him attractive to teams. With the Chicago Bears job likely to be the most attractive there could be mutual interest between the two. Hurts is happy to work with Moore. He has high praise for the way he not only executes a good game plan but also his approach to teaching it. I think for him, he’s brought a unique approach. He’s brought some new visions for us, and I think it’s helped us. I think he’s definitely added a dimension for us, and who he is, and his philosophy of being multiple. I think there’s another dynamic that’s new to him in having a guy back there who’s mobile, can play the game, and stretch the defense in multiple ways. I think it’s a navigation. While the fans have their favorites to be the next Chicago Bears head coach, having Kellen Moore could be a big get. He could be the most ready candidate to be a head coach. In addition to his experience with quality quarterbacks he has also worked with veteran head coaches who have helped him. Moore has worked with Jason Garrett , Mike McCarthy, Nick Sirianni, and Brandon Staley. They all helped him in how to make decisions Even Staley, who had his troubles as head coach, showed Moore how to think outside the box. Of course, Staley did it too much when he led the Chargers, Going with Kellen Moore could be a great decision for the Chicago Bears. Snapdeal's loss narrows to Rs 160 crore in FY24Yoon should not remain as South Korean president, his party leader saysJimmy Carter, the earnest Georgia peanut farmer who as US president struggled with a bad economy and the Iran hostage crisis but brokered peace between Israel and Egypt and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, died at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, the Carter Center said. He was 100. “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” A Democrat, he served as president from January 1977 to January 1981 after defeating incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford in the 1976 US election. Carter was swept from office four years later in an electoral landslide as voters embraced Republican challenger Ronald Reagan, the former actor and California governor. Carter lived longer after his term in office than any other US president. Along the way, he earned a reputation as a better former president than he was a president - a status he readily acknowledged. His one-term presidency was marked by the highs of the 1978 Camp David accords between Israel and Egypt, bringing some stability to the Middle East. But it was dogged by an economy in recession, persistent unpopularity and the embarrassment of the Iran hostage crisis that consumed his final 444 days in office. In recent years, Carter had experienced several health issues including melanoma that spread to his liver and brain. Carter decided to receive hospice care in February 2023 instead of undergoing additional medical intervention. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, died on Nov. 19, 2023, at age 96. He looked frail when he attended her memorial service and funeral in a wheelchair. Carter left office profoundly unpopular but worked energetically for decades on humanitarian causes. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 in recognition of his "untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." Carter had been a centrist as governor of Georgia with populist tendencies when he moved into the White House as the 39th US president. He was a Washington outsider at a time when America was still reeling from the Watergate scandal that led Republican Richard Nixon to resign as president in 1974 and elevated Ford from vice president. "I'm Jimmy Carter and I'm running for president. I will never lie to you," Carter promised with an ear-to-ear smile. Asked to assess his presidency, Carter said in a 1991 documentary: "The biggest failure we had was a political failure. I never was able to convince the American people that I was a forceful and strong leader." Despite his difficulties in office, Carter had few rivals for accomplishments as a former president. He gained global acclaim as a tireless human rights advocate, a voice for the disenfranchised and a leader in the fight against hunger and poverty, winning the respect that eluded him in the White House. Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to promote human rights and resolve conflicts around the world, from Ethiopia and Eritrea to Bosnia and Haiti. His Carter Center in Atlanta sent international election-monitoring delegations to polls around the world. A Southern Baptist Sunday school teacher since his teens, Carter brought a strong sense of morality to the presidency, speaking openly about his religious faith. He also sought to take some pomp out of an increasingly imperial presidency - walking, rather than riding in a limousine, in his 1977 inauguration parade. The Middle East was the focus of Carter's foreign policy. The 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty, based on the 1978 Camp David accords, ended a state of war between the two neighbours. Carter brought Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland for talks. Later, as the accords seemed to be unravelling, Carter saved the day by flying to Cairo and Jerusalem for personal shuttle diplomacy. The treaty provided for Israeli withdrawal from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and establishment of diplomatic relations. Begin and Sadat each won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1978. By the 1980 election, the overriding issues were double-digit inflation, interest rates that exceeded 20% and soaring gas prices, as well as the Iran hostage crisis that brought humiliation to America. These issues marred Carter's presidency and undermined his chances of winning a second term. On November 4, 1979, revolutionaries devoted to Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had stormed the US Embassy in Tehran, seized the Americans present and demanded the return of the ousted shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was backed by the United States and was being treated in a US hospital. The American public initially rallied behind Carter. But his support faded in April 1980 when a commando raid failed to rescue the hostages, with eight US soldiers killed in an aircraft accident in the Iranian desert. Carter's final ignominy was that Iran held the 52 hostages until minutes after Reagan took his oath of office on January 20, 1981, to replace Carter, then released the planes carrying them to freedom. In another crisis, Carter protested the former Soviet Union's 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by boycotting the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. He also asked the US Senate to defer consideration of a major nuclear arms accord with Moscow. Unswayed, the Soviets remained in Afghanistan for a decade. Carter won narrow Senate approval in 1978 of a treaty to transfer the Panama Canal to the control of Panama despite critics who argued the waterway was vital to American security. He also completed negotiations on full US ties with China. Carter created two new US Cabinet departments - education and energy. Amid high gas prices, he said America's "energy crisis" was "the moral equivalent of war" and urged the country to embrace conservation. "Ours is the most wasteful nation on earth," he told Americans in 1977. In 1979, Carter delivered what became known as his "malaise" speech to the nation, although he never used that word. "After listening to the American people I have been reminded again that all the legislation in the world can't fix what's wrong with America," he said in his televised address. "The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America." As president, the strait-laced Carter was embarrassed by the behaviour of his hard-drinking younger brother, Billy Carter, who had boasted: "I got a red neck, white socks, and Blue Ribbon beer." Jimmy Carter withstood a challenge from Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy for the 1980 Democratic presidential nomination but was politically diminished heading into his general election battle against a vigorous Republican adversary. Reagan, the conservative who projected an image of strength, kept Carter off balance during their debates before the November 1980 election. Reagan dismissively told Carter, "There you go again," when the Republican challenger felt the president had misrepresented Reagan's views during one debate. Carter lost the 1980 election to Reagan, who won 44 of the 50 states and amassed an Electoral College landslide. James Earl Carter Jr. was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, one of four children of a farmer and shopkeeper. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1946, served in the nuclear submarine program and left to manage the family peanut farming business. He married his wife, Rosalynn, in 1946, a union he called "the most important thing in my life." They had three sons and a daughter. Carter became a millionaire, a Georgia state legislator and Georgia's governor from 1971 to 1975. He mounted an underdog bid for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination, and out-hustled his rivals for the right to face Ford in the general election. With Walter Mondale as his vice presidential running mate, Carter was given a boost by a major Ford gaffe during one of their debates. Ford said that "there is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe and there never will be under a Ford administration," despite decades of just such domination. Carter edged Ford in the election, even though Ford actually won more states - 27 to Carter's 23. Not all of Carter's post-presidential work was appreciated. Former President George W. Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, both Republicans, were said to have been displeased by Carter's freelance diplomacy in Iraq and elsewhere. In 2004, Carter called the Iraq war launched in 2003 by the younger Bush one of the most "gross and damaging mistakes our nation ever made." He called George W. Bush's administration "the worst in history" and said Vice President Dick Cheney was "a disaster for our country." In 2019, Carter questioned Republican Donald Trump's legitimacy as president, saying "he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf." Trump responded by calling Carter "a terrible president." Carter also made trips to communist North Korea. A 1994 visit defused a nuclear crisis, as President Kim Il Sung agreed to freeze his nuclear program in exchange for resumed dialogue with the United States. That led to a deal in which North Korea, in return for aid, promised not to restart its nuclear reactor or reprocess the plant's spent fuel. But Carter irked Democratic President Bill Clinton's administration by announcing the deal with North Korea's leader without first checking with Washington. In 2010, Carter won the release of an American sentenced to eight years hard labor for illegally entering North Korea. Carter wrote more than two dozen books, ranging from a presidential memoir to a children's book and poetry, as well as works about religious faith and diplomacy. In a game where Nix completed 18 passes for 294 yards, his defense picked off three Jameis Winston passes for 171 yards. That defense is Nix’s best friend. Even in a game where it was getting shredded by Winston, Denver's D delivered a pair of pick-6s in a wild 41-32 win over the Cleveland Browns on Monday night. That side of the ball got gouged — allowing a Browns-record 497 yards passing from Winston and a career-best 235-yard receiving performance by former Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy — but made game-changing plays when it mattered most. “It’s pretty nice for the offense when they bail us out like that,” Nix said. “It was a complete team win." Next up, rest. The Broncos (8-5) enter their bye week two games clear of Indianapolis (6-7) for the final AFC playoff spot. They play the Colts coming out of the break. With a 76% postseason probability, according to the NFL, Nix and the Broncos are setting up for some meaningful football down the stretch. They mentioned the cat injured a back paw, which made me wonder why they didn’t try to make her an indoor cat where she would be safer. In 2011, we trapped a wild-born feral in our neighborhood, Sox. After getting her fixed and microchipped, we kept her in a half bath with a window for five months, spending time with her daily. It took years for her to trust us, but she eventually became a happy, content indoor cat, even bonding with two of our other cats. We moved across the country with Sox and four other pets, making stops to ensure they were comfortable. Sox remained cautious in our new home but eventually started exploring the house and stopped hiding. She would flop on her back, purr and show us just how happy she had become. She never did want us to touch her or pick her up, though. Sadly, we lost Sox in December 2022 to kidney disease and hypothyroidism. She was so ill at the end that I was able to pick her up for the first time and hold her. We miss her terribly, but we’re grateful for the wonderful life she had with us. — Ken, Las Vegas Dear Ken: Unfortunately, not all feral cats can transition to indoor life as well as Sox did. Cats have a much smaller socialization window than dogs, and if they miss that critical period, they may never adjust to living indoors. Some ferals become severely stressed or fearful in confinement, to the point where their quality of life suffers. In these cases, caretakers often make the tough decision to let them live outdoors. Injuries like the one described in the column are heartbreaking reminders of the risks and challenges outdoor cats face. It also underscores the importance of spaying and neutering pets to reduce the number of unwanted cats left to fend for themselves on the streets. Dear Cathy: My dog, Oliver, is about 2 years old. We’ve had him for a year. He was a stray captured by a Washington, D.C., animal shelter, who was fostered, neutered, vaccinated and operated on for a urinary tract issue. He was later adopted by a family whose “first” dog didn’t want a “little brother.” When we brought him home, his anxiety was understandably high, and he barked aggressively at new faces and visitors. Over time, this behavior has improved — his barking is now less aggressive and shorter. He approaches, backs up and barks a little more but calms down after a few minutes and becomes the friendly, quiet Oliver we love. He’s a terrier mix with a DNA profile showing a mix of about 15 breeds, including bully breeds and husky. He’s a small to medium-size dog. Any suggestions on how to build his confidence when greeting visitors? — Oliver’s Mom, Washington, D.C. Dear Oliver’s Mom: One way to help Oliver feel more secure is to practice controlled greetings. Start with familiar friends. When they arrive, have them enter quietly, avoid direct eye contact and let Oliver approach on his terms. Reward calm behavior with treats and praise, reinforcing that visitors are positive experiences. To strengthen these associations, guests may also offer him a favorite treat or toy upon arrival. The goal is to get Oliver to see new faces as opportunities for fun and rewards, not threats. Pair that with teaching him to sit when new people arrive, since dogs have a more difficult time barking when they are sitting. For extra support, tools like an anxiety wrap, pheromone collar or over-the-counter calming chews can help soothe Oliver and set the stage for success. Puzzle toys filled with high-value treats, reserved specifically for when guests arrive, can also redirect his energy.
