To best protect free speech, it is essential to strike a balance between individual rights and society's broader needs to maintain order, protect vulnerable groups and encourage civil discourse. Legal safeguards, technological transparency and educational initiatives must work together to preserve free speech in an increasingly complex world. The protection of free speech in the United States originates in the First Amendment, ratified in 1791, which prohibits Congress from abridging the freedom of speech or of the press. Over time, Supreme Court rulings, such as Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969), have refined this protection, allowing speech to be restricted only when it incites "imminent lawless action." These rulings affirm the importance of free expression while recognizing the need for limitations when speech threatens public order. Despite the enduring strength of these legal protections, modern challenges complicate their application. Technological advancements, particularly the rise of social media, have created new dynamics in how speech is expressed and regulated. Tech companies, wielding unprecedented power over public discourse, are increasingly tasked with moderating speech on their platforms. As legal scholar Tim Wu argues, this power raises new questions about how private companies influence free expression, especially given their ability to amplify or suppress certain viewpoints. Social media platforms have transformed how people communicate, but they have also introduced significant challenges to free speech. While tech companies are not bound by the First Amendment, their role in moderating speech has sparked debates over censorship. Platforms like Twitter and Facebook are often pressured to regulate hate speech, misinformation and harmful content, yet their moderation policies can be inconsistent or opaque. The Knight First Amendment Institute v. Trump (2019) case, where the court ruled that blocking users on Twitter violated the First Amendment, highlights the tensions between private regulation and public access to free expression. Critics argue that cancel culture creates an environment where people fear reprisal, leading to self-censorship. Sociologist Robbie M.K.S. Brown notes that cancel culture can ultimately stifle free expression, as the fear of social backlash prevents individuals from engaging in open debate. While social accountability can be important, it is vital to ensure that it does not erode the principles of free speech. To safeguard free speech, the United States must uphold legal protections while adapting to the modern challenges of digital communication and cultural shifts. First, the government must resist attempts to regulate speech in ways that overstep constitutional boundaries. David Cole argues that the government must be cautious in regulating speech to avoid infringing on the fundamental rights enshrined in the First Amendment. Simultaneously, digital platforms must be transparent in their content moderation policies. While companies have the right to regulate content, their moderation practices should be fair and consistent. Data scientist Cathy O'Neil warns that algorithmic bias can amplify harmful or divisive content, distorting public discourse. To address this, tech companies should implement independent oversight boards to review controversial content decisions and ensure that they do not disproportionately silence marginalized voices. Furthermore, a cultural shift toward fostering civil discourse is essential. Educational institutions, from K-12 schools to universities, must teach critical thinking and media literacy, helping students navigate the complexities of modern communication. REFORM, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge ruled that the family of former NFL player Glenn Foster Jr., who died in law enforcement custody in Alabama, can pursue a lawsuit alleging his death was the result of excessive force. Foster, a former New Orleans Saints defensive end, died on Dec. 6, 2021, three days after being arrested and taken to jail in rural Pickens County for alleged speeding and attempting to elude police. A judge ordered Foster taken to a medical facility in Tuscaloosa for a mental evaluation. Foster was found unresponsive in the back of a law enforcement vehicle when he arrived at the facility. He was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later. His widow, Pamela Foster, filed a lawsuit against officers at the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and jail saying Foster had been beaten, shocked with a Taser and strangled while at the jail. The defendants then asked a federal judge to dismiss the case. U.S. District Judge Annemarie Carney Axon ruled Thursday refused to dismiss allegations of excessive force and failure to intervene. Axon dismissed other portions of the lawsuit. The ruling came a day before the third anniversary of Foster’s death. Turning snow into gold: China’s winter sports boom ignites trillion-yuan marketDan Huttenlocher, SM ’84, PhD ’88, leads the way up to the eighth floor of Building 45, the recently completed headquarters of the . “There’s an amazing view of the Great Dome here,” he says, pointing out a panoramic view of campus and the Boston skyline beyond. The floor features a high-end event space with an outdoor terrace and room for nearly 350 people. But it also serves an additional purpose—luring people into the building, which opened last January. The event space “wasn’t in the original building plan,” says Huttenlocher, Schwarzman’s inaugural dean, “but the point of the building is to be a nexus, bringing people across campus together.” Launched in 2019–’20, Schwarzman is MIT’s only college, so called because it cuts across the Institute’s five schools in a new effort to integrate advanced computing and artificial intelligence into all areas of study. “We want to do two things: ensure that MIT stays at the forefront of computer science, AI research, and education,” Huttenlocher says, “and infuse the forefront of computing into disciplines across MIT.” He adds that safety and ethical considerations are also critical. To that end, the college now encompasses multiple existing , including the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), and multiple , including the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. (EECS—which was reorganized into the overlapping subunits of electrical engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence and decision-making—is now part of both the college and the School of Engineering.) At the same time, the college has embarked on a plan to hire 50 new faculty members, half of whom will have shared appointments in other departments across all five schools to create a true Institute-wide entity. Those faculty members—two-thirds of whom have already been hired—will conduct research at the boundaries of advanced computing and AI. The new faculty members have already begun helping the college respond to an undeniable reality facing many students: They’ve been overwhelmingly drawn to advanced computing tools, yet computer science classes are often too technical for nonmajors who want to apply those tools in other disciplines. And for students in other majors, it can be tricky to fit computer science classes into their schedules. Meanwhile, the appetite for computer science education is so great that nearly half of MIT’s undergraduates major in EECS, voting with their feet about the importance of computing. Graduate-level classes on deep learning and machine vision are among the largest on campus, with over 500 students each. And a blended major in cognition and computing has almost four times as many enrollees as brain and cognitive sciences. “We’ve been calling these students ‘computing bilinguals,’” Huttenlocher says, and the college aims to make sure that MIT students, whatever their field, are fluent in the language of computing. “As we change the landscape,” he says, “it’s not about seeing computing as a tool in service of a particular discipline, or a discipline in the service of computing, but asking: How can we bring these things together to forge something new?” The college has been the hub of this experiment, sponsoring over a dozen new courses that integrate computing with other disciplines, and it provides a variety of spaces that bring people together for conversations about the future of computing at MIT. More than just a nexus for computing on campus, the college has also positioned itself as a broad-based leader on AI, presenting policy briefs to Congress and the White House about how to manage the pressing ethical and political concerns raised by the rapidly evolving technology. “Right now, digital technologies are changing every aspect of our lives with breakneck speed,” says Asu Ozdaglar, SM ’98, PhD ’03, EECS department head and Schwarzman’s deputy dean of academics. “The college is MIT’s response to the ongoing digital transformation of our society.” Huttenlocher, who also holds the title of Henry Ellis Warren (1894) Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and coauthored the book with Henry Kissinger and Eric Schmidt, has long been exploring such issues. He started programming computers back in middle school in Connecticut in the 1970s on an ASR 33 teletype machine, and eventually he studied at the University of Michigan as a double major in cognitive psychology and computer science, exploring speech recognition and visual perception. “AI work back then was relatively disconnected from the physical world,” he says. “Being interested in the perceptual side of things was kind of an outlier for what was going on in AI then.” When he looked at grad schools in the 1980s, only MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and Stanford were doing significant work in AI, he says: “I applied to those three schools and figured if it didn’t work out, I’d get a job.” It worked out, of course. He headed to Cambridge and gravitated to MIT’s AI Lab in Technology Square, where he first worked on speech recognition and then transitioned into computer vision, at the time still in its infancy. After earning his PhD, he served simultaneously as a computer science professor at Cornell and a researcher at Xerox PARC, flying between New York and the burgeoning Silicon Valley, where he worked on computer vision for the digital transformation of copiers and scanners. “In academia, you have more curiosity-driven research projects, where in the corporate world you have the opportunity to build things people will actually use,” he says. “I’ve spent my career moving back and forth between them.” Along the way, Huttenlocher gained administrative experience as well. He was a longtime board member and eventual chair of the MacArthur Foundation, and he also helped launch Cornell Tech, the university’s New York City–based graduate school for business, law, and technology, serving as its first dean and vice provost. When Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of the investment firm Blackstone Group, gave $350 million to MIT to establish a college of computing in 2018, he was eager to return to the Institute to lead it. “The fact that MIT was making a bold commitment to become a broad-based leader in the AI-driven age—and that it was cutting across all of its schools—was exciting,” he says. Schwarzman College took shape through task forces involving more than 100 MIT faculty members. By the fall of 2019 a plan had been nailed down, and Huttenlocher was in place as director with EECS head Ozdaglar named deputy dean of academics. “I never believed that everybody wants to do computer science at MIT,” she says. “Students come in with a lot of passions, and it’s our responsibility to educate these bilinguals, so they are fluent in their own discipline but also able to use these advanced frontiers of computing.” Ozdaglar’s background is in using machine learning to optimize communications, transportation, and control systems. Recently she has become interested in applying machine-learning algorithms to social media, examining how the choices people make when sharing content affect the information—and misinformation—recommended to them. This work builds on her longstanding interdisciplinary collaborations in the social sciences, including collaborations with her husband, economics professor (and recent Nobel laureate) Daron Acemoglu. “I strongly feel that to really address the important questions in society, these old department or disciplinary silos aren’t adequate anymore,” she says. “The college has enabled me to work much more broadly across MIT and share all that I’ve learned.” Ozdaglar has been a driving force behind faculty hiring for the college, working with 18 departments to bring on dozens of scholars at the forefront of computing. In some ways, she says, it’s been a challenge to integrate the new hires into existing disciplines. “We have to keep teaching what we’ve been teaching for tens or hundreds of years, so change is hard and slow,” she says. But she has also noticed a palpable excitement about the new tools. Already, the college has brought in more than 30 new faculty members in four broad areas: climate and computing; human and natural intelligence; humanistic and social sciences; and AI for scientific discovery. In each case, they receive an academic home in another department, as well as an appointment, and often lab space, within the college. That commitment to interdisciplinary work has been built into every aspect of the new headquarters. “Most buildings at MIT come across as feeling pretty monolithic,” Huttenlocher says as he leads the way along brightly lit hallways and common spaces with large walls of glass looking out onto Vassar Street. “We wanted to make this feel as open and accessible as possible.” While the Institute’s high-end computing takes place mostly at a massive computing center in Holyoke, about 90 miles away in Western Massachusetts, the building is honey­combed with labs and communal workspaces, all made light and airy with glass and natural blond wood. Along the halls, open doorways offer enticing glimpses of such things as a giant robot hanging from a ceiling amid a tangle of wires. Lab and office space for faculty research groups working on related problems­—who might be from, say, CSAIL and LIDS—is interspersed on the same floor to encourage interaction and collaboration. “It’s great because it builds connections across labs,” Huttenlocher says. “Even the conference room does not belong to either the lab or the college, so people actually have to collaborate to use it.” Another dedicated space is available six months at a time, by application, for special collaborative projects. The first group to use it, last spring, focused on bringing computation to the climate challenge. To make sure undergrads use the building too, there’s a classroom and a 250-seat lecture hall, which now hosts classic Course 6 classes (such as Intro to Machine Learning) as well as new multidiscipline classes. A soaring central lobby lined with comfortable booths and modular furniture is ready-made for study sessions. For some of the new faculty, working at the college is a welcome change from previous academic experiences in which they often felt caught between disciplines. “The intersection of climate sustainability and AI was nascent when I started my PhD in 2015,” says Sherrie Wang, an assistant professor with a shared appointment in mechanical engineering and the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society, who is principal investigator of the Earth Intelligence Lab. When she hit the job market in 2022, it still wasn’t clear which department she’d be in. Now a part of Schwarzman’s climate cluster, she says her work uses machine learning to analyze satellite data, examining crop distribution and agricultural practices across the world. “It’s great to have a cohort of people who have similar philosophical motivations in applying these tools to real-world problems,” she says. “At the same time, we’re pushing the tools forward as well.” AI impact papers Among other researchers, she plans to collaborate with Sara Beery, a CSAIL professor who analyzes vast troves of visual, auditory, and other data from a diverse range of sensors around the world to better understand how climate change is affecting distribution of species. “AI can be successful in helping human experts efficiently process terabytes and petabytes of data so they can make informed management decisions in real time rather than five years later,” says Beery, who was drawn to the college’s unique hybrid nature. “We need a new generation of researchers that frame their work by bringing different types of knowledge together. At Schwarzman, there is a clear vision that this type of work is going to be necessary to solve these big, essential problems.” Beery is now working to develop a class in machine learning and sustainability with two other new faculty members in the climate cluster: Abigail Bodner, an assistant professor in EECS and Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (whose work uses AI to analyze fluid dynamics), and Priya Donti, assistant professor in EECS and LIDS (who uses AI and computing to optimize integration of renewable energy into power grids). “There’s already a core course on AI and machine learning­—an on-ramp for people without prior exposure who want to gain those fundamentals,” says Donti. “The new class would be for those who want to study advanced AI/ML topics within the context of sustainability-­related disciplines, including power systems, biodiversity, and climate science.” The class on machine learning and sustainability would be part of , an initiative cochaired by Ozdaglar and involving several dozen faculty members across MIT to develop new classes integrating advanced computing with other disciplines. So far, says Ozdaglar, it has generated more than a dozen new courses. One machine-learning class developed with input from nine departments provides exposure to a variety of practical applications for AI algorithms. Another collaboration, between computer science and urban studies, uses data visualization to address housing issues and other societal challenges. Julia Schneider ’26, a double major in AI and mathematics, took the Common Ground class on optimization methods, which she says demonstrated how computer science concepts like shortest-path algorithms and reinforcement learning could be applied in other areas, such as economics and business analytics. She adds that she values such classes because they blend her two areas of study and highlight multidisciplinary opportunities. Natasha Hirt ’23, MEng ’23, came to MIT thinking that computer science was peripheral to her major in architecture and urban planning. Then she took a course with building technology professor Caitlin Mueller on structural optimization and design—and it changed the trajectory of her MIT career. That led her to Interactive Data Visualization and Society, a Common Ground class, and several interdisciplinary classes combining computer science and field-specific knowledge. She says these provided the perfect introduction to algorithms without delving too much into math or coding,giving her enough working knowledge to set up models correctly and understand how things can go wrong. “They are teaching you what an engine is, what it looks like, and how it works without actually requiring you to know how to build an engine from scratch,” she says, though she adds that the classes also gave her the opportunity to tinker with the engine. She’s now working on master’s degrees in both building technology and computation science and engineering, focusing on making buildings more sustainable by using computational tools to design novel, less material-intensive structures. She says that Common Ground facilitates an environment where students don’t have to be computer science majors to learn the computational skills they need to succeed in their fields. And that’s the intent. “My hope is that this new way of thinking and these educational innovations will have an impact both nationally and globally,” Ozdaglar says. The same goes for recent papers MIT has commissioned, both on AI and public policy and on applications of generative AI. As generative AI has spread through many realms of society, it has become an ethical minefield, giving rise to problems from intellectual-property theft to deepfakes. “The likely consequence has been to both over- and under-­regulate AI, because the understanding isn’t there,” Huttenlocher says. But the technology has developed so rapidly it’s been nearly impossible for policymakers to keep up. “Even faculty who are leading researchers in this area say ‘I can’t read fast enough to keep up with what’s going on,’” Huttenlocher says, “so that heightens the challenge—and the need.” The college has responded by engaging faculty at the cutting edge of their disciplines to issue for government leaders. First was a written in the fall of 2023 by Huttenlocher, Ozdaglar, and the head of MIT’s DC office, David Goldston, with input from more than a dozen MIT faculty members. The brief spells out essential tasks for helping the US maintain its AI leadership, as well as crucial considerations for regulation. The college followed that up with a policy brief by EECS faculty specifically focusing on large language models such as ChatGPT. Others dealt with AI’s impact on the workforce, the effectiveness of labeling AI content, and AI in education. Along with the written documents, faculty have briefed congressional committees and federal agencies in person to get the information directly into the hands of policymakers. “The question has been ‘How do we take MIT’s specific academic knowledge and put it into a form that’s accessible?’” Huttenlocher says. On a parallel track, in July of 2023 President Sally Kornbluth and Provost Cynthia Barnhart, SM ’86, PhD ’88, issued a call for papers by MIT faculty and researchers to “articulate effective road maps, policy recommendations, and calls for action across the broad domain of generative AI.” Huttenlocher and Ozdaglar played a key role in evaluating the 75 proposals that came in. Ultimately, from interdisciplinary teams of authors representing all five schools. Each of the 27 teams received between $50,000 and $70,000 in seed funds to research and write 10-page impact papers, which were due by December 2023. Given the enthusiastic response, MIT sent out another call in the fall of 2023, resulting in an additional 53 proposals, with in March, on topics including visual art, drug discovery, and privacy. As with the policy briefs, Huttenlocher says, “we are trying to provide the fresher information an active researcher in the field would have, presented in a way that a broader audience can understand.” Even in the short time the college has been active, Huttenlocher and Ozdaglar have begun to see its effects. “We’re seeing departments starting to change some of the ways they are hiring around degree programs because of interactions with the college,” Huttenlocher says. “There is such a huge acceleration of AI in the world—it’s getting them to think with some urgency in doing this.” Whether through faculty hiring, new courses, policy papers, or just the existence of a space for high-level discussions about computing that had no natural home before, Huttenlocher says, the college hopes to invite the MIT community into a deeper discussion of how AI and other advanced computing tools can augment academic activities around campus. MIT has long been a leader in the development of AI, and for many years it has continued to innovate at the cutting edge of the field. With the college’s leadership, the Institute is in a position to continue innovating and to guide the future of the technology more broadly. “The next step,” says Ozdaglar, “is to take that impact out into the world.”WWE will perform on a stage next month that could be vastly larger than its current home on cable television when “Raw,” its weekly live show, makes its debut on Netflix. The Trailheads organized the tailgating lot, which was filled with excited fans decked out in face paint, glitter and even some hair dye. Brian Mcgary, who has been growing out his beard since the first game of the season, decided to dye it blue for Saturday's special game. "We make as much noise as possible inside, and it's a great release of the frustrations of a week to be able to just get out there, scream, and not have anybody looking at you like you're weird." The changes announced by the world’s biggest retailer followed a string of legal victories by conservative groups that have filed an onslaught of lawsuits challenging corporate and federal programs aimed at elevating minority and women-owned businesses and employees. The risk associated with some of programs crystalized with the election of former President Donald Trump, whose administration is certain to make dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion programs a priority. Trump’s incoming deputy chief of policy will be his former adviser Stephen Miller , who leads a group called America First Legal that has aggressively challenged corporate DEI policies. “There has been a lot of reassessment of risk looking at programs that could be deemed to constitute reverse discrimination,” said Allan Schweyer, principal researcher the Human Capital Center at the Conference Board. “This is another domino to fall and it is a rather large domino,” he added. Among other changes, Walmart said it will no longer give priority treatment to suppliers owned by women or minorities. The company also will not renew a five-year commitment for a racial equity center set up in 2020 after the police killing of George Floyd. And it pulled out of a prominent gay rights index . Schweyer said the biggest trigger for companies making such changes is simply a reassessment of their legal risk exposure, which began after U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in June 2023 that ended affirmative action in college admissions. Since then, conservative groups using similar arguments have secured court victories against various diversity programs, especially those that steer contracts to minority or women-owned businesses. Most recently, the conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty won a victory in a case against the U.S. Department of Transportation over its use of a program that gives priority to minority-owned businesses when it awards contracts. Companies are seeing a big legal risk in continuing with DEI efforts, said Dan Lennington, a deputy counsel at the institute. His organization says it has identified more than 60 programs in the federal government that it considers discriminatory, he said. “We have a legal landscape within the entire federal government, all three branches — the U.S. Supreme Court, the Congress and the President — are all now firmly pointed in the direction towards equality of individuals and individualized treatment of all Americans, instead of diversity, equity and inclusion treating people as members of racial groups,” Lennington said. The Trump administration is also likely to take direct aim at DEI initiatives through executive orders and other policies that affect private companies, especially federal contractors. “The impact of the election on DEI policies is huge. It can’t be overstated,” said Jason Schwartz, co-chair of the Labor & Employment Practice Group at law firm Gibson Dunn. With Miller returning to the White House, rolling back DEI initiatives is likely to be a priority, Schwartz said. “Companies are trying to strike the right balance to make clear they’ve got an inclusive workplace where everyone is welcome, and they want to get the best talent, while at the same time trying not to alienate various parts of their employees and customer base who might feel one way or the other. It’s a virtually impossible dilemma,” Schwartz said. A recent survey by Pew Research Center showed that workers are divided on the merits of DEI policies. While still broadly popular, the share of workers who said focusing on workplace diversity was mostly a good thing fell to 52% in the November survey, compared to 56% in a similar survey in February 2023. Rachel Minkin, a research associated at Pew called it a small but significant shift in short amount of time. There will be more companies pulling back from their DEI policies, but it likely won’t be a retreat across the board, said David Glasgow, executive director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at New York University. “There are vastly more companies that are sticking with DEI,” Glasgow said. “The only reason you don’t hear about it is most of them are doing it by stealth. They’re putting their heads down and doing DEI work and hoping not to attract attention.” Glasgow advises organizations to stick to their own core values, because attitudes toward the topic can change quickly in the span of four years. “It’s going to leave them looking a little bit weak if there’s a kind of flip-flopping, depending on whichever direction the political winds are blowing,” he said. GENEVA (AP) — Netflix has secured the U.S. broadcasting rights to the Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031 as the streaming giant continues its push into live sports. The deal announced Friday is the most significant FIFA has signed with a streaming service for a major tournament. The value was not given, though international competitions in women’s soccer have struggled to draw high-value offers. “Bringing this iconic tournament to Netflix isn’t just about streaming matches,” its chief content officer Bela Bajaria said in a statement. “It’s also about celebrating the players, the culture and the passion driving the global rise of women’s sport.” Netflix dipped into live sports last month with more than 60 million households watching a heavily hyped boxing match between retired heavyweight legend Mike Tyson and social media personality Jake Paul. Some viewers reported streaming problems , however. Netflix also will broadcast two NFL games on Christmas Day: the Kansas City Chiefs at the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens at the Houston Texans. That’s part of a three-year deal announced in May. World Cups are typically broadcast on free-to-air public networks to reach the biggest audiences, and the last women's edition in 2023 earned FIFA less than 10% of the men's 2022 World Cup. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had publicly criticized public broadcasters , especially in Europe, for undervaluing offers to broadcast the 2023 tournament that was played in Australia and New Zealand. That tournament was broadcast by Fox in the U.S. “This agreement sends a strong message about the real value of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the global women’s game,” Infantino said. The World Cup rights mark another major step in Netflix’s push into live programming. It’s recipe that Netflix has cooked up to help sell more advertising, a top priority for the company since it introduced a low-priced version of its streaming service that includes commercials two years ago. The ad-supported version is now the fastest growing part of Netflix’s service, although most of its 283 million worldwide subscribers till pay for higher-priced options without commercial. But Netflix is still trying to sell more ads to boost its revenue, which is expected to be about $30 billion. Netflix executives have predicted it might take two or three years before its ad sales become a major part of its revenue. Netflix expects to spend about $17 billion on programming this year — a budget that the Los Gatos, California, company once funneled almost entirely into scripted TV series and movies. But Netflix is now allocating a significant chunk of that money to sports and live events, a shift that has made it a formidable competitor to traditional media bidding for the same rights. FIFA will likely use the Netflix deal to drive talks with European broadcasters that likely will be hardball negotiations. Soccer finance expert Kieran Maguire, a co-host of The Price of Football podcast, suggested the deal was “a bit of a gamble" for FIFA and “saber-rattling” by Infantino. “(Netflix) get experience of football broadcasting, FIFA can say, ‘we are now partnering with a blue chip organization, so watch out you nasty Europeans,’” Maguire, an academic at the University of Liverpool, said in a telephone interview. FIFA and Infantino also want to raise the price of broadcast deals to help fund increased prize money and close the gender pay gap on the men’s World Cup. At the men’s 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the 32 team federations shared $440 million in prize money. For the women’s 2023 tournament , FIFA had a $152 million total fund for prize money, contributions to teams’ preparation costs and payments to players’ clubs. In FIFA’s financial accounts for 2023 , the soccer body reported total broadcasting revenue of $244 million. In the year of the men’s 2022 World Cup it was almost $2.9 billion. The next Women's World Cup will be a 32-team, 64-game tournament in 2027, played in Brazil from June 24-July 25. The U.S. originally bid jointly with Mexico. The 2031 host has not been decided, though the U.S. likely will bid for a tournament which FIFA is expected to try to expand to 48 teams. That would match the size of the 104-game format of the men's World Cup that debuts in 2026 in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Spain won the 2023 Women's World Cup after the U.S. won the two previous titles — in France in 2019 and Canada in 2015. More than 25 million viewers in the U.S. watched the 2015 World Cup final, a 5-2 win over Japan, played in Vancouver, Canada, in a time zone similarly favorable to Brazil. FIFA tried to sign Apple+ to an exclusive global deal to broadcast the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup which is being played in 11 U.S. cities next June and July. Broadcast networks showed little interest in the FIFA club event that will now be broadcast for free on streaming service DAZN, which is building closer business ties to Saudi Arabia. LOS ANGELES - As the Dodgers officially welcomed their latest gazillionaire pitcher to a remodeled Dodger Stadium on Tuesday, the churning of bulldozers in the infield was momentarily drowned out by whining from around the baseball world. Boo-hoo! The Dodgers are buying another championship! For shame! The Dodgers have an unfair advantage! It's not right! The Dodgers are ruining baseball! On and on the tears flowed - from Pittsburgh to Minnesota, from Northern California to South Florida - with many complaining that signing two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell to a $182-million contract officially makes the defending World Series champions bad for the game. Stop it. Just stop it. Far from being a blight on the major-league landscape, the Dodgers' front office is everything good about the game. They are smart, savvy and fearless. They base decisions not only on analytics but also on attitude. They spend a lot of money because they make a lot of money, and since when is reinvesting revenue in your fans a bad thing? Many think the Dodgers should be grateful to win the World Series this year and humbly behave like other recent defending champions by cutting corners, reducing costs and receding back into the pack. Forget that. These Dodgers are intent on running it back, going even harder for an encore, sparing no expense in an attempt to become baseball's first back-to-back champions in a quarter-century. Deal with it. Endure it. Maybe even learn from it. The Dodgers need not apologize to anyone for doubling down on a Commissioner's Trophy because they have created a championship the right way. They've built it, not bought it. Andrew Friedman spent nearly a decade creating the sort of smart culture that strengthened the clubhouse and stocked the farm system. Stan Kasten spent that same time running a Guggenheim business model that restored the fan experience at baseball's largest stadium, sold record numbers of tickets and endured justified criticism to score big TV money. Finally, with the infrastructure in place and the new money flowing, the Dodgers opened their fatted wallet for the players who created the championship. Players didn't come here only for the big money - they came for the winning baseball, which could happen with any team lucky, brainy and focused enough. "Winning is hard. There are teams that have a lot of resources that have trouble winning," Friedman said Tuesday. "Winning is hard. It goes way beyond money. It gets to culture, the type of people you have around." Everyone talks about the nearly $2 billion in committed money, the more than $1 billion owed in deferred payments from 2028 to 2046 and a current annual payroll exceeding $350 million, more than triple some of baseball's cheaper operations. But did you know that for the first five years of his tenure, Friedman did not sign a player for more than $100 million? He used that time to build an atmosphere where players wanted to be, and soon enough, the superstars essentially began signing themselves. Listen to Snell, who signed so early in the offseason that the stove was not yet even hot. "It was really easy," he said of his choice. "... You look at the team, you look at what they've built, what they're doing, it's just something you want to be a part of." Over the last couple of years, one has heard the same thing repeatedly. Mookie Betts was traded here, liked what he saw, and signed his giant contract four months later. Freddie Freeman wanted to stay in Atlanta, didn't feel the love and quickly moved into the Dodgers' embrace. Shohei Ohtani moved up the road from pleasant Anaheim because he desperately coveted a championship. Money was a major factor in all three signings, for sure, but the offers were maximized by the atmosphere. Players saw how other players got better here. They saw the Dodgers rescue the careers of Max Muncy and Chris Taylor. They saw how young Walker Buehler grew into a lights-out pressure pitcher. They saw Will Smith go from an ordinary catcher to a $140-million man. The final piece of the complicated economic puzzle occurred last winter with a simple handshake. Ohtani agreed to defer all but $2 million annually of his $700-million contract if it would help the Dodgers pursue championship players. The Dodgers agreed, living up to their promise by signing players like Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow and Teoscar Hernández. It is no coincidence that Snell agreed to defer $66 million of his contract. The Ohtani agreement grows stronger and deeper. "The pledge that we made when we met with him about how aggressive we were going to be to try to win, we feel some responsibility and obligation to fulfill that," Friedman said of Ohtani. "I think no matter what, our mindset was, 'Let's be aggressive to add to the core that we had.'" So they recently added Snell, tacked on a $74-million extension for National League Championship Series most valuable player Tommy Edman and here's guessing they're not done yet. "What's really difficult is to win; what's even harder to do is repeat," Friedman said. "And to a man, all the guys that we talked to, our players, coaching staff, everyone was of the mind, 'Let's run it back. Let's do everything we can to be in a position to win.' We feel like we've got a really talented team in place. So everything for us was centered around, 'What can we do? What can we add to put ourselves in the best position to do that?'" And to those complaining about the Dodgers' passion - does your team have the same basic commitment? A chart called "The Scrooge Index," compiled by Travis Sawchik of The Score, would indicate it does not. Trump’s lawyers cited the ruling to argue that the hush money jury got some improper evidence, such as Trump’s presidential financial disclosure form, testimony from some White House aides and social media posts made during his first term. Prosecutors disagreed and said the evidence in question was only “a sliver” of their case. If the verdict stands and the case proceeds to sentencing, Trump’s punishments would range from a fine to probation to up to four years in prison — but it’s unlikely he’d spend any time behind bars for a first-time conviction involving charges in the lowest tier of felonies. Within that total, music volume was the most complained about issue - cropping up 281 times. Dogs barking attracted 172 complaints over the same period. A catch-all category of ‘other’ domestic noise racked up 228 reports, but that figure includes multiple different noise sources emanating from the home, such as DIY and shouting. The city council has also taken enforcement action on 161 occasions - with music and dogs being the main single reasons. That move usually involves the issuing of a ‘noise abatement notice’ - a breach of which can result in prosecution and fine. It can be quite frustrating to be trapped in [such a] situation,” Lucy adds. Preston City Council’s noise service swings into action to deal with persistent problems that could be classed as a ‘statutory nuisance’ because of the effect they are having on a person’s quality of life. Although the authority does occasionally intervene over one-off events like a party or an alarm sounding - which generate a large number of complaints while they are actually happening - its primary role is to gather evidence of noise that is occurring repeatedly over a period of time. For that reason, the noise service is mainly focused on gathering evidence of how disruptive and disturbing a particular activity is for those living within earshot of it. Advertisement Advertisement Since people prone to making an unreasonable noise often have no regard to the time of day or night they do so - which can, of course, be part of the problem - the city council operates an out-of-hours service to which reports can be made until long after dark. The authority runs a night-time noise phone line, designed largely to advance investigations into previously-registered complaints rather than look into new issues being reported for the first time. It is open between 7pm and 1am, Sunday to Thursday, and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. The service enables officers to be dispatched to hear complained-about noise for themselves when it is actually happening - and so helps determine whether it crosses the statutory nuisance threshold. Lucy Davies says the night noise facility is particularly useful for investigating the most common cause of noise complaint in Preston - loud music. So if I'm standing in somebody's bedroom at one o'clock in the morning - when it would be reasonably expected that they might be wanting to sleep - and I can hear loud music, [I can judge] whether I believe [it] would be sufficient to be a statutory nuisance. “We also have noise monitoring equipment that we can install...[but] there's really no better evidence than an officer saying: ‘I visited the bedroom at 1am, I could hear the music and these were the lyrics’...or even [testify to] something like a bass beat,” Lucy explains. Lucy Davies says it is a “common misconception” that nobody can cause a noise nuisance during the day. “There is no cut off time. If someone is living in flats and they're, for example, playing music really loud during the daytime, then it doesn't matter whether you're trying to sleep or not. Advertisement Advertisement “If it's loud enough to be disturbing you and your property, then we can look at it and we will make an assessment of whether it is a nuisance.” Once a noise nuisance has been established, the city council will contact the person causing it to bring the matter to their attention. The first step is usually to offer advice as to how they can stop being a source of misery to their neighbours. “[With music], we could arrange a sound check and agree a reasonable level at which their music can be played and at which they wouldn't then be causing a nuisance,” Lucy Davies explains. “If we can't have that conversation or the person isn't compliant and is not willing to take the advice on board, that’s when we do have to take a firmer line - and we would then look at a legal notice being served. But if they don't - and we witness further breaches - then we would be looking at potentially going to court to get a warrant to seize the noise-making equipment, such as stereos and TVs, for instance.” Prosecution for breaches of a noise abatement notice can also result in either a lump sum fine or a fine for each further day the recipient of the notice fails to comply with it. Ultimately, a local authority can apply to the High Court for an injunction, if a prosecution has not been adequate. However, even when a statutory nuisance is not deemed to have occurred, Lucy says the city council will still try to broker a resolution to noise-related complaints. Here’s what we learned from Trudeau’s appearance, which was filmed on Nov. 24. Host Marc-André Grondin joked that he wanted to alert the prime minister’s security team about the name of one of the sauces, called Da’ Bomb, with Trudeau kidding him not to use the name at an airport. Tesla investor Ross Gerber doesn't think Elon Musk's ties to Donald Trump will benefit the EV maker. The longtime Tesla bull thinks the car company has a number of problems to sort through. Gerber says Tesla stock should be trading around $200, about 40% lower than current levels. Elon Musk spent immense money and energy helping Donald Trump retake the White House, but the Tesla CEO's new political influence may not do much to boost the fortunes of his carmaker, one of the company's longtime backers said. Ross Gerber, a Tesla bull and the president of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management, thinks the electric vehicle maker faces big challenges ahead, even as optimism about Musk's ties to Trump has excited investors and sparked a sharp rally in Tesla stock since the election. Traders are hopeful that Musk's close ties to the president-elect — which ultimately landed the Tesla CEO a new government role — could sway important policy decisions in favor of Tesla. But that doesn't solve the problems Tesla has been struggling with for years, Gerber said, pointing to concerns surrounding the success of Tesla's car business, and whether its new ride-hailing platform or artificial intelligence projects will amount to much. In Gerber's view, Tesla shares should be trading around $200, implying 40% downside from the stock's closing price of $338.23 on Tuesday. Gerber said his fund, which began cutting its stake in Tesla in late 2023, continues to sell the stock in small amounts, keeping Tesla's concentration in its portfolio to just 2%. The fund sold nearly 16,000 shares in the third quarter, though the total value of its remaining stake rose to $71 million, regulatory filings show. "We're still selling it," Gerber told Business Insider. "I used to have a 10%, 12%, even 20% stake in Tesla at some point in my life where it was like, Tesla was taking us to the moon kind of thing. And I just think its best days are behind it." It's worth noting that Tesla handily beat third-quarter earnings estimates, soothing some investor concerns after a tough start to the year. Countering Gerber's views, some also see Musk's new political influence as a big win for his companies. "The biggest winner from a Trump White House remains Tesla and Musk which made a strategic big bet on Trump that will pay major dividends for years to come," Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives wrote following the election. Skeptical of the tech Gerber believes Tesla's technology has plateaued in recent years, and Musk's ties to Washington won't help that. He pointed to issues with Tesla's full self-driving technology, which he's been using nearly every day for the last three years. "So the ultimate reality for full self-driving is it doesn't work, and the precision isn't good. And vision-only systems have flaws that I don't think Elon wants to admit." Gerber thinks the tech issues will persist, partly because Musk looks poised to devote more of his time to his role in the Department of Government Efficiency. Beginning with the acquisition of X, Gerber, in recent years, has been a vocal critic of what he sees as Musk's neglect of his core companies, primarily Tesla . "He doesn't work at Tesla. I mean, let's be real, "Gerber said. We all know where Elon is right now, and he's at Mar-a-Lago. So he hasn't worked at Tesla for a long time." Gerber is also concerned about some of the projects within the company. He pointed to Tesla's ride-hailing platform, which will be competing with more established companies like Uber and Waymo. "Why does it deserve this premium?" he said of the stock. "I get that Elon is now vice president of the United States, but that doesn't necessarily help Tesla." Trump's transition team has signaled that it would end the $7,500 tax credit for EVs— a move that Musk supports —but even that's unlikely to be a bullish catalyst for the company, Gerber said. Musk has said that repealing the tax credit would be more harmful to Tesla's rivals, but Gerber's firm has estimated that Tesla sales could drop around 25% if the tax credit was no longer available. That would be "devastating" to Tesla's business, he said, given that the company has already slashed prices on some of its models in the face of uncertain EV demand in recent years. "If the EV tax credit goes, that would be an extreme negative I would have to react to," Gerber said, adding that it was his biggest concern at the moment. Previously, Gerber told BI he would consider completely closing his position in Tesla by the end of the year if its business didn't improve, or if Musk didn't refocus his attention on his companies. Gerber has since adjusted his view and said he would continue to hold Tesla as a small investment in his portfolio, mostly out of bullishness on EVs in general. "Certainly if you want to get out of Tesla, it's a great opportunity," Gerber said, later adding that he was in "wait-and-see" mode. "And if you're a buyer of Tesla, boy, you're paying a lot for hope." Her family hopes that Mary could feel and appreciate their presence,” Hortman said in the post. “While heart-wrenching, the family has determined that hospice is the best solution.” As of Monday, Murphy continued to receive comfort care at a hospital until she could be placed in a hospice care facility, something the family expected to happen soon, according to Hortman. Murphy, 85, of Hermantown, was first elected to her Duluth-area district in 1976 and served 46 years before losing re-election by just 33 votes in 2022. She was among the few remaining DFL lawmakers in the Minnesota House representing a predominantly rural district. In a November interview with the Pioneer Press, Murphy said she thought political power used to be spread more evenly throughout the state. “The metro area, the other areas, still have to pull together, but it’s not as elastic as it used to be,” she said. Murphy, who taught social studies and American history at Duluth Central High School until retiring in 1997, was the second-longest-serving lawmaker in Minnesota history.
