A.Fresh humiliation for CNN as ailing news channel is overtaken by Food Network in ratings war By MELISSA KOENIG FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 23:13, 10 December 2024 | Updated: 23:23, 10 December 2024 e-mail 3 View comments CNN is continuing its downward slump in the ratings, as it was overtaken by the Food Network and History Channel last week. The cable news network struggled to gain momentum despite a busy news cycle that comprised the point-blank assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the ensuing manhunt for his killer, news related to President-elect Donald Trump 's Cabinet picks and a rebel group gaining ground in Syria . Its primetime shows, Anderson Cooper 360, The Source with Kaitlan Collins and CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip only averaged 367,000 viewers for the week, Fox News reports. By comparison, Fox News Channel averaged 2.5million total primetime viewers. CNN's audience was also smaller than TNT, Food Network, Discovery, Hallmark Mysteries, TLC, TBS, History, HGTV, USA, MSNBC, the Hallmark Channel and ESPN. The network fared even worse among the 25 to 54-year-old demographic, which advertisers weigh heavily. It received a measly 67,000 viewers in the category, finishing behind networks like TV Land, MTV and Comedy Central. The statistics spell trouble for the legacy network, which has been on a downward spiral since its presidential election coverage. CNN continued its downward spiral in network ratings last week Its audience was smaller than that of the Food Network for the week of December 2 It then suffered its lowest-rated week among total viewers since June 2001 during the week of November 25, with only an average of 268,000 viewers. The dismal numbers set off infighting among the network's stars as they try to figure out who is to blame for CNN's failure. Former producer Carper Dulmage, who now works for KABC in Los Angeles, even quipped 'CNN is no longer significant,' as critics on both sides of the political spectrum claim that the channel caters to the other. Amid the low ratings, network executives announced in November they would be implementing massive layoffs that would affect hundreds of employees - mostly in the production sector. Reporters and correspondents will then be required to cover their slack, they told Puck News- describing how on-air workers will be 'asked to assume more of the responsibilities once handled by teams of producers and production assistants.' 'Redundant assignments will be nixed, and various divisions will be reduced or even eliminated,' reporter Dylan Byers wrote. 'Some of the on-air talent are also likely to be affected,' he went on to reveal. New CEO Mark Thompson (pictured) has planned massive layoffs across the company The dismal numbers set off infighting among the network's stars as they try to figure out who is to blame for CNN's failure The architect of the layoffs is new CEO Mark Thompson, a former New York Times boss who was brought in to overhaul the network under its Warner Bros. Discovery parent. He filled the position left by then-languishing leader Chris Licht this past August, and since then, ratings have fallen more than 20 percent after the network already went from being one of the most-watched cable news network on election nights, to one of the least. Thompson now plans to create new positions to support his digital-first vision, insiders told Byers. But one longtime CNN employee told Fox News that after news of the layoffs spread, staff across the company are left feeling 'very sad and deeply frustrated.' 'Feelings which are pervasive throughout the organization among those who have been here a long time and feel a deep personal connection to having helped build the organization,' the anonymous staffer added. Stars including Jake Tapper (left) and Wolf Blitzer have reportedly been denied raises on their multi-million-dollar salaries as the biggest names on the network fear for their futures The network had already laid off about 100 employees - or three percent of its workforce - earlier this year. Stars including Jake Tapper and Wolf Blitzer have reportedly been denied raises on their multi-million-dollar salaries as the biggest names on the network fear for their futures. On-screen favorite Chris Wallace also departed the network last month, although he insisted that he did so on his own terms . Most recently, anchor Alisyn Camerota, 58, signed off for the final time on Sunday. She had joined the network in 2014 after a 16-year stint at Fox News. She started off hosting a morning show alongside Chris Cuomo before moving to afternoons in 2021. After Warner Bros. Discovery took control of CNN, Camerota found herself in various positions at the network, including as the network's 11pm host before she became a political commentator and fill-in anchor with the network. In an emotional farewell, Camerota reflected on her remarkable journey with the channel which she said had included 'interviews with presidents, heroes, and extraordinary individuals'. She said experiencing such moments while working for CNN had been the culmination of her lifelong dreams in journalism. 'The journalists at CNN are the very best in the business,' Camerota told viewers as she expressed her deep gratitude for the opportunities and camaraderie she experienced at the network. 'It's been an honor to be in your homes this past decade through some of the biggest stories of our lifetimes.' Camerota also acknowledged her viewers, some of whom have credited her work with helping them navigate challenging times, and concluded her message by thanking her colleagues for the laughter, lessons, and shared passion for the power of journalism. 'To my dear friends at CNN, thank you for all of the laughs that we've shared, all you've taught me about the power of journalism, and for making my time here so deeply rewarding.' Oscilloscopes are essential tools used to analyze electronic signals by displaying their waveforms as a function of time. These devices measure and analyze properties such as amplitude, rise time, frequency, time interval, and distortion. Digital oscilloscopes, which are commonly used in 5G testing, employ an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to measure 5G signals. Attenuators and vertical amplifiers are utilized before the ADC to scale the waveform. Digital oscilloscopes also offer automated incident capturing and storing facilities, enabling a better understanding of component and signal issues. With the anticipated increase in 5G traffic, oscilloscopes supporting higher bandwidth applications will be in high demand among electronics manufacturers. In response, market players, such as Anritsu Corp. And Tektronix Inc., are introducing advanced oscilloscopes to cater to this need. For instance, Anritsu's BERTWave MP2110A oscilloscope supports 53-Gbaud pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) signals for 5G network and device testing. Tektronix's new 2 Series MSO is a portable, lightweight oscilloscope designed for both laboratory and field use. The launch of such advanced oscilloscopes and the rising demand from industries like communication, electronics, semiconductors, and others will fuel the growth of the oscilloscopes segment in the global 5G testing equipment market.
