Colonialists exploited the nation’s valuable natural resources for their benefit and ruled oppressively. They deliberately prevented the Myanmar national races from accessing higher education and used various methods to hinder their ability to progress on par with the times. It is also the day that inspired patriotism and revitalized national pride among the entire Myanmar people. Therefore, it remains an unforgettable day for all citizens of Myanmar. The history of Myanmar’s struggle for independence showed the spirit of patriotism and unity which have proven to be a powerful force, as evidenced by the national victories that were achieved. The celebrations of National Victory Day, which were held annually without fail across the entire Union of Myanmar, have now reached their 104th year. As such, all national people need to preserve the national victory to commemorate National Victory Day yearly. To be able to do so, the whole nation must foster durable peace. Peace is the foundation for the country’s economic development, the improvement of the social lives of its citizens, the harmony and stability within the Union, and the rule of law. Through mutual respect and understanding between national races, cooperation between individuals can be fostered, and misunderstandings and conflicts can be reduced, resolving issues through dialogue. Relationships based on trust allow challenges to be overcome together, ultimately leading to a more harmonious and collaborative coexistence, ensuring long-term and sustainable peace. If political issues are resolved through armed conflict instead of political means, it will result in a situation where there is freedom but no peace. Furthermore, it is essential to be mindful that the non-disintegration of the Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity, and perpetuation of sovereignty must be preserved to avoid any potential risks. Everybody must join hands to build durable peace. They have to work together in unity to achieve national stability, peace, and development. Now is the time for all national brethren to eliminate misunderstandings and doubts, reject undesirable ideologies, and come together in mutual trust, respect, and love. Whenever everybody remembers National Victory Day, they have to forge durable peace for all through united strength to develop the nation without any hindrances.

If the lost bag has an Apple AirTag in it, that information can now be passed directly to United, the airline announced Thursday. The new feature, called Share Item Location, allows travelers with an AirTag or other Find My network accessory to share the location with the airline’s customer service team to help locate their luggage in the event it’s misplaced. United says more than 99% of its customers pick up their luggage without a hitch. The feature is now available with iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2 or macOS 15.2. “Apple’s new Share Item Location feature will help customers travel with even more confidence, knowing they have another way to access their bag’s precise location with AirTag or their Find My accessory of choice,” said David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer. Travelers on United whose bags do not arrive at their destination can file a delayed baggage report with United and share the link to the item’s location either through the United app or via text message. After the report has been submitted, customer service agents will be able to locate the item on an interactive map alongside a timestamp of a recent update. The shared location will be disabled after a customer has the bag, and customers can also stop sharing the location of the item at any time on their own. The location link will also automatically expire after seven days. Using AirTags or other tracking devices on luggage is increasingly popular among frequent travelers, with a significant boom following the 2022 Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown , which displaced thousands of travelers over Christmas and into 2023, alongside much of their belongings. United says lost bags are rare, with more than 99% of its customers arriving with their bags. It says the new technology will help those with lost bags to recover them more quickly because the airline will have more information about them. Apple previously announced the new service will also be integrated at other air carriers, including Delta Air Lines. Others include Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Vueling. It has been 140 years since Test cricket has been plagued by so many early finishes, but Australia captain Pat Cummins doesn’t want this helter-skelter era to prompt a change towards four-day Tests. The Gabba has traditionally been a faster-moving venue in recent years, with only one of the past four Tests there going into the second half of day four. Alarmingly for the sport’s bean counters, who forgo significant revenue when Tests don’t go the distance, the trend is nothing new. In the past three-and-a-half summers, only four Tests in Australia have reached the final day, with two of those rain-affected. Data also shows a recent drop in the number of overs per Test in Australia across the past decade, while the past two summers have had the least balls bowled per Test since 1887-88. Globally, the situation is similar. Some 58 per cent of matches have ended before the fifth day this decade, with balls bowled per Test at its lowest point since the 1880s. “It is funny, the wickets are definitely a bit juicier in the past few years. They have been played at a faster pace,” Cummins said. “You always go into a Test thinking it is going to go five days. But the most important thing is if it does speed up, making sure you can adapt quickly.” The opening two Tests of this summer have lasted an average of 243 overs, compared with the 395 per match during the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Early finishes have prompted Michael Vaughan and others to reignite the push to make four-day Tests commonplace, allowing for a Thursday-Sunday schedule. The International Cricket Council has previously discussed making four-day Tests mandatory, having dipped its toe into the experiment in 2017 and 2019. ICC rules allow nations to play a four-day match, but only in fixtures that do not count towards the World Test Championship. Host boards generally lose money in shorter Tests, through catering costs and decreased gate takings. CA does not incur financial losses in broadcast rights deals for matches finishing early, while industry insiders suggest advertising slots and revenue for networks remain fixed. But shorter Tests have the potential to cause headaches for advertisers and broadcasters, potentially impacting future rights dollars. A belief also remains that four-day Tests would allow for more three-match series, given matches could be squeezed into a tighter time frame. Those against the move point to the high percentage of draws in women’s four-day Tests, the potential for bad weather to quickly ruin a contest, and how Test length varies so much around the world. Since Test cricket returned to Pakistan in 2019, some 12 of 18 games have reached a fifth day, usually on batter-friendly pitches. “It’s a pretty good format,” Cummins said. “In terms of length of game, it doesn’t really bother me. Washington: In the heat of the 2000 presidential campaign, Democratic candidate vice president Al Gore took a break from barnstorming battleground states to attend a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee in East Hampton, New York. Standing behind Gore onstage was Scott Bessent, a hedge fund manager and — at the time — a major donor to Democrats who cohosted the event at his home. On Saturday AEDT, Bessent was tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to be his Treasury secretary. Having won the trust of Trump and his inner circle, Bessent would lead a Republican economic agenda of cutting taxes, culling federal regulations and enacting sweeping tariffs. Credit: AP The selection caps an extraordinary career arc for an investor who was once a protege of liberal billionaire philanthropist George Soros and gave money to top Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Barack Obama. “He was very supportive of the causes and the people that we supported,” said Will Trinkle, a Democrat who cohosted the event with Gore. He noted that Bessent, who would be the first openly gay Treasury secretary, was a strong advocate for gay rights and marriage equality. If confirmed by the Senate, Bessent would help Trump as he attempts to remake the US economy. As Treasury secretary, Bessent would work to steer tax cuts through Congress, lead trade negotiations with China and help cull federal regulations that Trump believes are stifling the economy. Bessent, 62, declined to be interviewed. But friends and former colleagues described him as driven by data and as intellectually curious, with an ability to work with people from across the ideological and political spectrum. Raised in a fishing village in South Carolina, Bessent is the son of a real estate developer who experienced several of his own financial booms and busts. He went on to Yale University, where he was class treasurer, wrote for The Yale Daily News and wanted to become a journalist. In college, Bessent reflected on the challenges of being a Southerner in New England, writing in the paper in 1981: “I was the only one in the dorm who was heartbroken when George Wallace decided not to run for president.” Bessent studied political science but ended up working in finance after getting an internship with Jim Rogers, an investor and business partner of Soros’. In the 1990s, he worked as a partner at Soros Fund Management, gaining notoriety by betting against the British pound and earning the firm $US1 billion. After leaving to start his own fund, Bessent returned in 2011 to become Soros’ chief investment officer. By then, Bessent had become a major donor to Republican candidates. According to a summary of his donations provided by his office, Bessent has given about $US15 million ($23 million) to political causes over the years, and all but $US300,000 has gone to Republicans. Credit: Bloomberg Bessent was not part of Trump’s political orbit during his first campaign or term as president but has known the Trump family for decades and was close friends with the president-elect’s late brother, Robert. This past spring, when many business leaders were hesitant to back Trump publicly as his legal troubles mounted, Bessent took a different view. He saw Trump as a “stock that goes up on bad news”, as he explained it to political analyst Mark Halperin last month, because every apparent setback appeared to strengthen his candidacy. Concerned about the exploding national debt and the need to change the international trading system, Bessent set up a meeting with Trump and started exchanging economic policy ideas. In recent months, Bessent has pitched a “3-3-3” plan that would aim for 3 per cent economic growth, reduce the budget deficit to 3 per cent of gross domestic product and increase domestic oil production by 3 million barrels per day. He also came up with an idea that would allow the president to essentially sideline the chair of the Federal Reserve, although he has backed down from that proposal in the face of opposition. In some policy areas, Bessent has demonstrated an inclination to temper Trump’s economic impulses. He suggested that Trump’s idea of assigning a 15 per cent tax rate to companies that produce their products in the US could run afoul of international trade laws. And he has described Trump’s plan for blanket tariffs as a “maximalist” negotiating strategy, suggesting that tariffs should be phased in to give markets time to adjust. Bessent was chosen after an internal tussle among Trump’s aides over the job. Howard Lutnick, Trump’s transition team co-chair and chief executive of Cantor Fitzgerald, made a late pitch to secure the Treasury secretary role for himself. As Trump was deciding, sceptics of Bessent raised concerns about his ties to Soros and suggested he was not a true believer in tariffs. However, he won the public support of key advisers to Trump such as Larry Kudlow and Steve Bannon, who viewed him as the best choice. For Bessent, the challenge now will be remaining in Trump’s good graces as the president-elect once again looks to upend the international trading system and rewrite the tax code. Trump’s first Treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin, often tried to dissuade Trump from imposing new tariffs and would attempt to calm markets as trade tensions flared. Still, he managed to maintain Trump’s trust. Stanley Druckenmiller, a hedge fund investor who worked with Bessent at Soros Fund Management, said that although Bessent is soft-spoken, he can also be “tough and persuasive” and that he has the right temperament to work for a demanding boss such as Trump. “If anybody can handle it, it’s Scott,” Druckenmiller said.
