Twenty-three people died on Sunday (November 25, 2024) when a bus on a remote mountain road in Brazil's Alagoas State dived into a ravine, regional authorities said. Rescue services confirmed that 22 died at the scene and another person — a pregnant woman — succumbed after being taken to hospital, the Alagoas state government said in a statement. Brazilian media said "dozens" of people were injured, and that the bus had been carrying 40 passengers. The accident occurred near the town of Uniao dos Palmares. State governor Paulo Dantas declared on the social media platform X three days of mourning over the "tragedy." The bus went off the road in an area difficult to access, in a mountainous area called Serra da Barriga. Activate your Online Access Now Article content Weegar suited up for one season with the Raiders before he left to join the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Halifax Mooseheads, but he made his impact felt with 13 goals, 37 assists and 50 points in 53 games in 2011-12. “It’s one of those moments when you lay in bed and think about it that you can’t believe it,” Weegar told the Ottawa Citizen from his Calgary home on Friday. “It’s quite the honour, but it’s going to be special just having all my family and friends there. “It will be weird to be back in the Sportsplex because you relive those moments, and there will be quite a few people there.” The season Weegar spent as a 16-year-old with the Raiders was special. That club won the CCHL title and advanced to the Fred Page Cup. He was approached by the Mooseheads midway through the season to join them, but and though Nepean coach Peter Goulet urged Weegar to make the jump, he opted to stay. “It was a year that made a huge impact,” Weegar said. “It felt like the NHL to me because I was a late bloomer. I was asked to play for Mooseheads and said no because I was too committed to the Raiders. I wanted to stay with this team, and Peter was pushing me to go. I felt like after that year I could turn this into a living and I could see being a hockey player after that.” He did leave after the season and had a chance to play with Nathan MacKinnon in Halifax. His mother, Louise and uncle/agent Matt Ebbs both encouraged Weegar to take the next step. “It was tough leaving home the first time. I cried like a baby leaving. I remember being on the front porch, crying, when I was going away,” he said. Selected No. 206 overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2013 NHL draft, Weegar has had to work for everything. He split the 2014-15 campaign between the ECHL and American Hockey League. He also spent two more full years in Springfield before making the Florida Panthers’ roster in 2016-17. Weegar signed an eight-year, $50-million U.S. deal with Calgary in October 2022 after he was dealt to the Flames as part of the trade that sent forward Matthew Tkachuk to Florida. The journey hasn’t been easy for Weegar. “I was carving my path in minor hockey. I was playing for the ‘A’ team when there was a ‘AAA’ team. I was always a step or league behind,” Weegar said. “You stay motivated and dedicated and you have great support behind you with my friends and family. You have to have people around you. Sunday isn’t just about me, it’s about everybody that’s helped me get to this point of getting a jersey retired. Marcus Lum Nearly 60 percent of youngsters are not optimistic about Hong Kong's economic prospects, according to a think tank's survey. Youth IDEAS, founded by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups' Youth Research Centre, interviewed 600 young workers aged 18 to 34 from September 28 to October 4, who gave the economic prospects an average score of 5.95 out of 10. The survey found that 59.5 percent of those interviewed expressed concerns about "salary reduction" and "professional knowledge or skills falling behind." Over 80 percent agreed that strategies such as "promoting a mega event economy," "developing digital economy and promoting new quality productive forces," and "strengthening the development of eight major centers" would help promote Hong Kong's development. The survey also found that over 85 percent agreed with "nurturing local talent is a key factor in promoting Hong Kong's economic development" and "learning new technologies is a crucial skill for future employment." Tony Lau Hon-yiu, convener of the think tank's employment and economy group, said Hong Kong's economic transformation requires multiparty cooperation and well-positioned human resource policies. He suggested that the city promote collaboration between applied science universities and enterprises to offer technical training courses that meet industry demands. "Applied science universities should collaborate with enterprises to establish technical training courses focusing on industry needs, such as big data analysis and artificial intelligence, to increase the supply of local technical talent." Lau said companies should be encouraged to introduce paid study leave and tax incentives to strengthen local talent development. He added that mainland technology enterprises should utilize their advanced technologies to enhance training quality and market competitiveness. With Simpson averaging 19.7 points per game in his junior season, the second-highest mark in the Pac-12, its not hard to see why. Forcing his way onto the Hornets’ roster will take a fair bit more than that. Regardless of that though, he’s already flashed the ability to be a rotation-caliber player. With the Denver Nuggets showing interest in Micic, Simpson could earn a standard contract by or after the trade deadline. He just has to prove he deserves it. Most of the times, I don’t know what I’m going to do.
