The public naming of Jay-Z as the mysterious celebrity accused in an anonymous civil lawsuit of raping a 13-year-old girl with Sean “Diddy” Combs came after weeks of behind-the-scenes battling between the star’s lawyer and the Texas attorney representing the woman. Since Combs was charged by federal prosecutors in a salacious sex trafficking probe, numerous civil lawsuits have been filed from people claiming they were victimized by the entertainer. There have also been suggestions that other big names will be swept into the scandal. But the Jay-Z case offers a window into the machinations and big money behind such cases that could be a preview of the potential fallout involving other civil litigation that’s been filed against Combs. In October, Jay-Z received a demand letter from Texas-based attorney Tony Buzbee making allegations of misconduct and suggesting a meeting. Legal experts said such letters are a common way to begin settlement discussions. But this letter included picture of a ticking clock and Jay-Z came out swinging. The music mogul responded by filing his own anonymous lawsuit against the attorney in Los Angeles. On Sunday, Jay-Z’s name was made public as the celebrity in the suit, and he responded by blasting Buzbee on social media as a “deplorable human” and an “ambulance chaser in a cheap suit.” Jay-Z has denied any wrongdoing, calling the claims “idiotic.” Buzbee told The Times on Monday that he “won’t be deterred or intimidated,” but wouldn’t commit to whether other celebrities might be named. Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, on Monday sent a letter to a judge in the case asking to either dismiss the allegations against his client or disclose the accuser’s identity. Federal prosecutors have not named any co-conspirators. However, they have repeatedly emphasized their investigation remains ongoing. In a sprawling indictment unsealed earlier this year, they allege Combs for decades used his empire to coerce his victims into sex in gatherings known as “freak-offs.” Combs, who has denied any wrongdoing, was arrested in September after nearly a year of investigation by federal authorities. Jay-Z has not been charged with any crimes and it is unclear whether federal authorities are pursuing this allegation. Legal experts said it’s hard to assess the claims without knowing more about the evidence the plaintiffs have and how Jay-Z and any other celebrities ultimately named can rebut the allegations. “I think [Buzbee] knew there was going to be a fight,” added Laurie L. Levenson, a professor at Loyola Law School. “By the time he names them, he better have all of his witnesses, all of the evidence in order because the minute that the name goes out the fight really escalates.” The war between Jay-Z and Buzbee began in October when the attorney filed a lawsuit in New York on behalf of a woman, identified only as Jane Doe, who says she was 13 when she was raped by Combs and an anonymous male celebrity at a party after the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000. The woman, who had been outside Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sept. 7, 2000, trying to talk her way into the awards ceremony, was invited to an after-party hosted by Combs. A driver took her to a large white house with a gated U-shaped driveway and, once inside, she was told to sign a nondisclosure agreement, the suit says. A luxurious party was unfolding inside. Waitstaff carried trays of drinks, loud music blasted throughout the house and partygoers were snorting cocaine and using marijuana, according to the lawsuit. After finishing one drink — a concoction of orange juice, cranberry juice and something bitter — she says she began to feel lightheaded and found an empty bedroom to rest. Combs walked into the room with two celebrities, a man and a woman. He approached her “with a crazed look in his eyes, grabbed her and said ‘You are ready to party!’” the lawsuit states. The lawsuit alleges the male celebrity — identified Sunday by Buzbee as Jay-Z— raped the girl, while Combs and an unidentified female celebrity allegedly watched. Combs then raped the girl as the other two celebrities watched, according to the lawsuit. Before filing the lawsuit, Buzbee wrote Jay-Z a demand letter in which he accused the celebrity of raping “multiple minors, both male and female, who had been drugged at parties hosted by Combs,” according to a lawsuit filed by Jay-Z. The lawyer said that if Jay-Z did not agree to a confidential mediation then he would “take a different course,” according to a lawsuit. Jay-Z responded by filing his own anonymous lawsuit against the attorney last month alleging the lawyer tried to extort a payout in return for not identifying him as a sexual abuser tied to Combs. Attorneys representing Jay-Z said the demand letters included “wildly false horrific allegations.” Buzbee fired back by amending his October civil complaint on Sunday to add Jay-Z, whose given name is Shawn Carter, as a defendant. Jay-Z’s attorney then sent a memo to the judge asking her to either dismiss the case or disclose the accuser’s identity. “Mr. Carter deserves to know the identity of the person who is effectively accusing him — in sensationalized, publicity-hunting fashion — of criminal conduct, demanding massive financial compensation, and tarnishing a reputation earned over decades,” Spiro wrote in the memo. David Ring, a lawyer who has represented victims of sexual assault in high-profile civil cases including against Harvey Weinstein, said it’s not unusual for attorneys to send letters as a way to negotiate with a defendant before filing a case. “Jay-Z here called the lawyer’s bluff and so the victim’s attorney named him in the court filing,” Ring said. Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, said Buzbee either tried to leverage his belief that Jay-Z would want to keep the allegations private or his client didn’t want to be the first person to accuse such a high profile public figure. “This is why I don’t like demand letters in these types of cases and prefer to immediately file a lawsuit. Don’t bark if you’re not going to bite,” Rahmani said. Still, Rahmani said celebrities with connections to Combs are likely on edge. “If I were a celebrity who attended one of Diddy’s ‘freak-offs,’ I would ... have my lawyer on speed dial,” Rahmani said. In a statement issued Sunday by Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s entertainment company, he addressed Buzbee directly saying that the attorney had “made a terrible error in judgment thinking that all celebrities are the same.” “I’m not from your world. I’m a young man who made it out of the project of Brooklyn. We don’t play these types of games. We have very strict codes and honor. We protect children, you seem to exploit people for personal gain,” he wrote. Buzbee responded on Instagram by posting a picture of himself in the Marines, saying that despite what he called a “coordinated and aggressive” effort to intimidate and harass him by people following him and his family, and contacting his clients and former employees, he won’t be backing down. “I also won’t allow anyone to scare my clients into silence,” he wrote. “Sunlight is the best disinfectant and I am quite certain the sun is coming.”FORT SMITH, Ark., Nov. 25, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Rally House, a national sports apparel and merchandise retailer, officially opened their doors to their newest Arkansas storefront location on Friday, November 22 nd , with Rally House Fort Smith Pavilions. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A scruffy little fugitive is on the lam again in New Orleans, gaining fame as he outwits a tenacious band of citizens armed with night-vision binoculars, nets and a tranquilizer rifle. Scrim, a 17-pound mutt that's mostly terrier, has become a folk hero, inspiring tattoos, t-shirts and even a ballad as he eludes capture from the posse of volunteers. And like any antihero, Scrim has a backstory: Rescued from semi-feral life at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter, the dog broke loose in April and scurried around the city until he was cornered in October and brought to a new home. Weeks later, he'd had enough. Scrim leaped out of a second-story window, a desperate act recorded in a now-viral video. Since then, despite a stream of daily sightings, he's roamed free. The dog’s fans include Myra and Steve Foster, who wrote “Ode to Scrim” to the tune of Ricky Nelson’s 1961 hit, “I’m a Travelin’ Man.” Leading the recapture effort is Michelle Cheramie, a 55-year-old former information technology professional. She lost everything — home, car, possessions — in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and in the aftermath, found her calling rescuing pets. “I was like, ‘This is what I should be doing,’” Cheramie said. “I was born to rescue.” She launched Zeus’ Rescues, a nonprofit shelter that now averages 600 cat and dog adoptions a year and offers free pet food to anyone who needs it. She helped Scrim find the home he first escaped from. It was Cheramie's window Scrim leaped from in November. She's resumed her relentless mission since then, posting flyers on telephone poles and logging social media updates on his reported whereabouts. She's invested thousands of dollars on wildlife cameras, thermal sensors and other gear. She took a course offered by the San Diego Zoo on the finer points of tranquilizing animals. And she's developed a network of volunteers — the kind of neighbors who are willing to grid-search a city at 3 a.m. People like writer David W. Brown, who manages a crowd-sourced Google Map of all known Scrim sightings. He says the search has galvanized residents from all walks of life to come together. As they search for Scrim, they hand out supplies to people in need. "Being a member of the community is seeing problems and doing what you can to make life a little better for the people around here and the animals around you," Brown said. And neighbors like Tammy Murray, who had to close her furniture store and lost her father to Parkinson's Disease. This search, she says, got her mojo back. “Literally, for months, I’ve done nothing but hunt this dog,” said Murray, 53. “I feel like Wile E. Coyote on a daily basis with him.” Murray drives the Zeus' Rescues' van towards reported Scrim sightings. She also handles a tactical net launcher, which looks like an oversized flashlight and once misfired, shattering the van's window as Scrim sped away. After realizing Scrim had come to recognize the sound of the van's diesel engine, Murray switched to a Vespa scooter, for stealth. Near-misses have been tantalizing. The search party spotted Scrim napping beneath an elevated house, and wrapped construction netting around the perimeter, but an over-eager volunteer broke ranks and dashed forward, leaving an opening Scrim slipped through. Scrim's repeated escapades have prompted near-daily local media coverage and a devoted online following. Cheramie can relate. “We’re all running from something or to something. He's doing that too,” she said. Cheramie's team dreams of placing the pooch in a safe and loving environment. But a social media chorus growing under the hashtag #FreeScrim has other ideas — they say the runaway should be allowed a life of self-determination. The animal rescue volunteers consider that misguided. “The streets of New Orleans are not the place for a dog to be free,” Cheramie said. “It’s too dangerous.” Scrim was a mess when Cheramie briefly recaptured him in October, with matted fur, missing teeth and a tattered ear. His trembling body was scraped and bruised, and punctured by multiple projectiles. A vet removed one, but decided against operating to take out a possible bullet. The dog initially appeared content indoors, sitting in Cheramie's lap or napping beside her bed. Then while she was out one day, Scrim chewed through a mesh screen, dropped 13 feet to the ground and squeezed through a gap in the fence, trotting away. Murray said Cheramie's four cats probably spooked him. “I wholeheartedly believe the gangster-ass cats were messing with him,” Murray said. Cheramie thinks they may have gotten territorial. Devastated but undeterred, the pair is reassessing where Scrim might fit best — maybe a secure animal sanctuary with big outdoor spaces where other dogs can keep him company. Somewhere, Murray says, “where he can just breathe and be." Brook is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. Colorado star Travis Hunter says Coach Prime `ain’t going nowhere'The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and Fundação Getulio Vargas of Brazil, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance private sector development in fertiliser production, hybrid seed technology, and agricultural finance. The MoU was signed on behalf of the government by the Permanent Secretary of FMAFS, Mr Temitope Fashedemi, and the President of FGV, Prof Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, at FGV Headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit. “Under the MOU, private-sector projects on fertiliser production, hybrid seed technology, and agricultural financing are projected to attract $4.3bn in private-sector investment,” the State House Director of Information and Publicity, Mr. Abiodun Oladunjoye, revealed in a statement Sunday. The statement is titled, ‘Nigeria, Brazil sign MOU to boost agribusiness in 774 Local Government Areas.’ Oladunjoye said the agreement marks a new phase of strategic collaboration between Nigeria and FGV, the Green Imperative Project lead implementer, one of the largest international agricultural technology transfer initiatives. “Conceived in 2018, GIP is a $1.2bn cooperative effort between Brazil and Nigeria, designed to modernise Nigeria’s agricultural sector through Brazilian expertise in tropical agriculture. Accordingly, over the next five years, the project will identify and support one agribusiness in Nigeria’s 774 local government areas with technical and financial resources, driving sustainable development and economic growth. “This partnership paves the way for Brazil to engage with Nigeria’s dynamic and rapidly growing agricultural sector. “Together with FGV, we are poised to unlock the potential of private sector investment in key areas critical to our food security,” Fashedemi said at the signing ceremony. Six games more of this? Oy vey. It might be better for all involved in this complete and embarrassing mess to pack up and go home. What the Giants are putting out on the field is not doing anyone any good, and this slop is making it harder and harder to make a case that those employed in the front office and the coaching staff deserves to come back to give it another try in 2025. The easy throwaway line at this time is to say, “Guess it wasn’t all Daniel Jones’ fault.’’ Anyone watching the Giants stumble and bumble in the first 10 games knew that to be true. Well, Jones was benched and waived and is looking for a new team. Tommy DeVito was inserted at quarterback and the entire operation on both sides of the ball was inept. There were rows and rows of empty gray seats at the finish of Sunday’s pathetic 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers, with no traffic concerns exiting MetLife Stadium. DeVito did not spark anything and the Giants did not stop anyone. This was a bad team on display in every way possible. Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield might as well have been throwing from a rocking chair. He was having so much fun he mimicked DeVito’s Italian hand gesture celebration , unveiled last season, after vaulting into the end zone in the closing seconds of the first half to make it 23-0. Ouch. The Giants (2-9) have now lost six consecutive games and are 0-1 in the post-Daniel Jones era. The Buccaneers (5-6) came in on a four-game losing streak, but the Giants are the feel-better team of the NFL. They are healers for whatever ails their opponent. DeVito, rocked all day, was forced out with five minutes remaining for two plays and then was able to finish things out. DeVito’s numbers — 21 of 31 for 189 yards — were not indicative of how much he struggled. He was sacked four times and the offense was barely functional. This was never competitive. It was 30-0 late in the third quarter before DeVito ran for 17 yards and Devin Singletary scored from a yard out to put the Giants on the board early in the fourth quarter. Hurray. The Giants have not led in a game since Week 5 in Seattle. That was back on Oct. 6. It is almost Thanksgiving. That’s a long time to be constantly trailing. Down 23-0 on their opening drive of the second half, the Giants flirted with scoring when DeVito hit three passes to Malik Nabers — untargeted in the first half — and they advanced to the Tampa 5-yard line. Rookie Tyrone Tracy, fighting for extra yards, lost the ball on a fumble — just as he did on the first play of overtime two weeks ago in Munich. The Bucs proceeded to go 95 yards in 12 plays to make it 30-0, with Mayfield having the time of his life playing pitch and catch with his guys. Mayfield ended up 24 of 30 for 294 yards and did not have to do much after halftime. The Giants would have been better off staying on their bye week. They came out and looked either disinterested or disassociated with each other. The Buccaneers with the greatest of ease built a 23-0 lead with this degree of domination: They outgained the Giants 290-45 in yards and 17-3 in first downs. Mayfield was 19 of 23 for 230 yards. DeVito was 3 of 5 for 31 yards. DeVito, who went 3-3 starting six games in 2023 as an undrafted free agent, received a nice ovation — it was more like polite applause — when he took the field for the first series on offense. He was the choice of head coach Brian Daboll over Drew Lock, the backup quarterback the first 10 games. DeVito stepped on the field and was already in a hole, with the Giants having allowed a 14-play, 70-yard drive to open the game, as Mayfield completed seven passes and Sean Tucker ran it in from a yard out to make it 7-0. Anyone hoping for a lift from DeVito would have been better off searching for a unicorn. Changing one player was not going to enliven this sad-sack bunch. DeVito on his first drop-back was sacked in an instant and it did not get any better for him. On the next series, the Giants faced fourth-and-1 on their own 37-yard line and Daboll, showing his desperation, went for it. The play he called in was not a power run by Tracy — far from it. Daboll called for a jet sweep to diminutive Wan’Dale Robinson and it surprised no one, as Robinson was hauled down by linebacker Yaya Diaby for no gain. That made it easy for the Bucs to move into field goal range — Mike Evans beat Deonte Banks for 26 yards — for a 10-0 lead. DeVito was sacked by Anthony Nelson to start the next series. Mayfield hit tight end Payne Durham for 26 yards and Evans for 30 and Bucky Irving then ran it up the gut of the so-called Giants defense, virtually untouched for a 5-yard touchdown to make it 17-0. Stop us if you heard this one before: DeVito was sacked on the next series. This time it was Vita Vea who power-rushed center John Michael Schmitz, driving him back, back, back directly into the helpless quarterback. The only surprise here was that it took until late in the second quarter for the boos and jeers to waft down from the stands. Showing no interest in actually stopping the opponent, the Giants sat back and watched the Bucs go 86 yards for another touchdown to make it 23-0. By then, some were heading for the exits. More would soon follow.Dec 13 (Reuters) - OpenAI said it would ask a judge in California on Friday to reject a request by billionaire Elon Musk to halt the ChatGPT maker’s conversion to a for-profit company. Wilkinson finished with 16 points and Rytis Petraitis 13 for the Golden Bears (5-1), whose only loss this season was at Vanderbilt. Jacob Holt went for a season-high 25 points for the Hornets (1-4), who dropped their fourth straight after a season-opening win over Cal State Maritime. Seeking a fourth straight home win, Cal led by as many as 12 points in the first half and 40-33 at halftime before Sacramento State rallied. The Hornets used a 14-5 burst out of the gate following the intermission to grab a 47-45 lead. Julian Vaughns had a 3-pointer and three-point play in the run. But Cal dominated pretty much the rest of the game, taking the lead for good on a Petraitis 3-pointer with 14:50 remaining. Stojakovic, a transfer from rival Stanford, went 11-for-15 at the foul line en route to his third 20-point game of the young season. Cal outscored Sacramento State 26-17 on free throws to more than account for the margin of victory. Coming off a 23-point explosion in his first extended action of the season, Wilkinson hit five of his 10 shots Sunday. The Golden Bears outshot the Hornets 47.2 percent to 43.1 percent. Joshua Ola-Joseph contributed 10 points and six rebounds, Mady Sissoko also had 10 points and Petraitis found time for a team-high five assists. Holt complemented his 25 points with a game-high eight rebounds. He made four 3-pointers, as did Vaughns en route to 18 points, helping Sacramento State outscore Cal 30-21 from beyond the arc. EJ Neal added 16 points for the Hornets, while Emil Skytta tied for game-high assist honors with five to go with seven points. --Field Level Media

Scrim, a 17-pound mutt that's mostly terrier, has become a folk hero, inspiring tattoos, T-shirts and even a ballad as he eludes capture from the posse of volunteers. Recommended Videos And like any antihero, Scrim has a backstory: Rescued from semi-feral life at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter, the dog broke loose in April and scurried around the city until he was cornered in October and brought to a new home. Weeks later, he'd had enough. Scrim leaped out of a second-story window, a desperate act recorded in a now-viral video. Since then, despite a stream of daily sightings, he's roamed free. The dog’s fans include Myra and Steve Foster, who wrote “Ode to Scrim” to the tune of Ricky Nelson’s 1961 hit, “I’m a Travelin’ Man.” “I'm a travelin' dog and I've made a lot of stops/All over this town...” Leading the recapture effort is Michelle Cheramie, a 55-year-old former information technology professional. “...And at every stop I own the heart, of at least one lovely ... " People like writer David W. Brown, who manages a crowd-sourced Google Map of all known Scrim sightings. He says the search has galvanized residents from all walks of life to come together. As they search for Scrim, they hand out supplies to people in need. “Being a member of the community is seeing problems and doing what you can to make life a little better for the people around here and the animals around you,” Brown said. “...If you're ever in the 9th Ward stop and see/My cute little mini poodle ...” Near-misses have been tantalizing. “It’s too dangerous.” "... and my Shar-Pei doll down in old Treme/Waits for my return ..." Scrim was a mess when Cheramie briefly recaptured him in October, with matted fur, missing teeth and a tattered ear. Somewhere, Murray says, “where he can just breathe and be.” ___ Brook is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative.
