It wasn't DNA or facial recognition technology that cracked the case. Nor did amateur online sleuths make the breakthrough. In the end, it was a McDonald's restaurant employee - hours away from the scene of the crime - who spotted a man resembling a "person of interest" photo. The suspect was careful to wear a mask while traveling around New York City, but pulled it down for a second to flirt with a woman behind the desk at a youth hostel, and again to eat at McDonald's. That may have been enough. Police in Altoona, Pennsylvania, swooped into the restaurant and arrested Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old from a wealthy Baltimore-area family with a private and Ivy League education. After six dramatic days, the hunt for the man alleged to have gunned down UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson was over. On Monday morning, a regular at the McDonald's in Altoona told the BBC that one of his friends spotted Mr Mangione as he entered the restaurant and commented: "There's that shooter from New York." "I thought he was kidding," the customer said. Police were called and when officers first approached Mr Mangione and asked him if he'd been in New York, he became "visibly nervous, kind of shaking", Altoona's Deputy chief of police Derick Swope told reporters. As he was being led into a court hearing on Tuesday, Mr Mangione shouted about an "insult to the American people and their lived experience". He now faces charges of second-degree murder along with weapons offences. New York police say the suspect first arrived in the city on 24 November, in the busy run-up to the Thanksgiving holiday. He visited the Hilton Hotel, where the shooting would later happen, and his encounter with a clerk at the hostel, where he stayed, was captured on camera. Ten days later, on 4 December, Mr Thompson was shot dead on his way to a meeting at about quarter to seven in the morning. The suspect fled on foot, bike and taxi to a bus station near the George Washington Bridge. From there, he exited the city. The killing was identified as a targeted attack early on in the investigation. Video showed the suspect ignored several pedestrians on the busy Manhattan pavement and zeroed in on Mr Thompson. Shell casings at the scene had words written on them, thought to be references to the insurance industry: "delay", "deny", "depose". Mr Mangione comes from a large and wealthy family in Baltimore, Maryland, with business interests in nursing homes, real estate, a country club and a radio station, . He attended the all-male private Gilman School, where he graduated as valedictorian – at the top of his class. A former classmate, Freddie Leatherbury, told the Associated Press news agency that Mr Mangione came from a wealthy family, even by that private school's standards. "Quite honestly, he had everything going for him," Mr Leatherbury said. Mr Mangione went on to the University of Pennsylvania. There he received bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science, according to the school, and founded a video game development club. A friend who attended the Ivy League college at the same time as Mr Mangione described him as a "super normal" and "smart person". He worked as a data engineer and a video game developer, and most recently was living in Hawaii. Social media posts show that friends and family members had recently been attempting to contact him and asking about his whereabouts. In a post on X from October, someone asked Mr Mangione: "Hey, are you ok? Nobody has heard from you in months, and apparently your family is looking for you." Monday's arrest ended a dramatic six days in which the alleged killer seemed to disappear, leaving few clues behind and eluding police. Not only was he able to leave one of the busiest cities in the world using public transport, before Monday his name was not publicly known. It's also unclear exactly where he was hiding in the days after he left New York. Juliette Kayyem, former assistant secretary for policy at the US Department of Homeland Security, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that his background in technology may have helped him evade capture for nearly a week. "This was someone who was studying how law enforcement and how these cities try to protect themselves, which is essentially they have lots of cameras around," she said. "Now that we know a little bit about him - that he's a smart person, he went to great schools, he had higher degrees, he studied engineering technology, he was into electronic gizmos - some of it is beginning to make sense," Kayyem said. The suspect also wore a face mask almost constantly, and Mr Mangione was found with a fake driving licence and an untraceable "ghost gun" – a firearm assembled by the owner without a serial number, which police said may have been 3D-printed. Authorities said he used cash for purchases in New York City and fled the scene of the crime into Central Park, where there are few surveillance cameras. But he also appeared to make some elementary mistakes – including revealing his face in the hostel, and holding on to the gun and the fake identification card. The Mr Mangione family released a statement Monday night through Mangione's cousin, a Maryland state lawmaker. "Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi's arrest," said Nino Mangione. "We offer prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved." Mr Mangione's online footprint shows few messages about healthcare or the insurance industry. Instead there are comments about artificial intelligence and technology, science and pop philosophy, and reviews of a range of books, including 1984 and the Harry Potter series. But a number of social media accounts matching his name and picture offer some potential clues about his motivation. RJ Martin, a former roommate of Mr Mangione in Hawaii, said the suspect had a back injury, but he "never complained" about it. "His back injury prohibited him, at times, from just doing many normal things," Mr Martin said. The banner image on Mr Mangione's X account shows an X-ray of a spine with hardware in it. Mr Martin, who eventually lost contact with Mr Mangione, said he believed his former friend "would have never conceived of hurting someone else". And Mr Mangione's account on Goodreads, a user-generated book review website, indicated that he had read several books about managing back pain, one of them called Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry. Also on the Goodreads site, Mr Mangione gave four stars to a text called Industrial Society and Its Future by Theodore Kaczynski – better known as the Unabomber manifesto. Starting in 1978, Kaczynski carried out a bombing campaign that killed three people and injured dozens of others. In his review, Mr Mangione acknowledged Kaczynski was a violent individual who killed innocent people. However, he also argued that the essay should not be dismissed as the manifesto of a lunatic but rather the work of an "extreme political revolutionary". He quoted another online commentator who said: "When all other forms of communication fail, violence is necessary to survive." Mr Mangione wrote that he found this viewpoint "interesting". Police said a three-page, handwritten document Mr Mangione had when he was arrested expressed "ill will" towards corporate America. A senior law enforcement official told the New York Times that the document said: "These parasites had it coming" and "I do apologise for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done". Meanwhile, mixed reactions to the shooting and Mr Mangione's arrest continue – sympathy for Mr Thompson and his family versus . Online, the shooting prompted some criticism of the medical insurance industry, and Mr Mangione was even hailed as a hero. Police in Altoona said the department received hundreds of emails and calls, including death threats. Some members of the public called police in support of Mr Mangione, claiming they were actually the killer and that police "have the wrong guy". And police are advising McDonald's employees not to give interviews or statements out of concern for their safety. The restaurant received hundreds of negative reviews online, calling employees "rats" and criticising them for calling the police. Similar sentiments have been expressed online, often in posts by anonymous accounts. But others have condemned such sentiments. "In America, we do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint," Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro told reporters. "I understand people have real frustration with our healthcare system... But I have no tolerance, nor should anyone, for one man using an illegal ghost gun to murder someone because he thinks his opinion matters most. "In some dark corners, this killer is being hailed as a hero. Hear me on this: He is no hero," Shapiro said.
A trustee who oversaw the Infowars bankruptcy auction told a judge Tuesday that he picked The Onion's bid for the conspiracy-filled platform because was it far better than the only other proposal he received, from a company affiliated with Alex Jones. Trustee Christopher Murray testified during the second day of a hearing where a judge is scrutinizing Murray's decision to name the satirical news outlet's offer as the winning bid after a November auction that Jones alleges involved fraud and collusion. “Only two people showed up to bid and ... one was just better than the other,” Murray testified, referring to The Onion. Asked how much better it was, he said “by a lot.” It is not clear how quickly U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston will rule. Testimony on Tuesday was expected to go into the evening. The Onion, which wants to turn Infowars’ website and social media accounts into parodies , offered $1.75 million in cash and other incentives for Infowars’ assets in the auction that concluded on Nov. 14. First United American Companies, which runs a website in Jones’ name that sells nutritional supplements, bid $3.5 million. Although The Onion’s cash offer was lower than that of First United American, it also included a pledge by many of the Sandy Hook families to forgo $750,000 of the auction proceeds due to them and give it to other creditors, providing the other creditors more money than they would receive under First United American’s bid. Lopez could ultimately decide whether to void The Onion’s bid, name the Jones-affiliated company the winner or hold another auction, among other possibilities. Jones did not attend the proceedings and instead broadcast from his studios in Austin. “I can’t imagine the judge would certify this fraud,” Jones said on his show Tuesday. “I mean it’s head-spinning the stuff they did and what they claimed.” The trustee and The Onion deny the allegations from Jones and the company and accuse them of sour grapes. If The Onion wins, Jones expects to be kicked out of the Infowars studio and its web and social media platforms. The sale of Infowars is part of Jones’ personal bankruptcy case , which he filed in late 2022 after he was ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion in defamation lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas filed by relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Jones repeatedly called the 2012 shooting that killed 20 children and six educators a hoax staged by actors and aimed at increasing gun control. Parents and children of many of the victims testified in court that they were traumatized by Jones’ conspiracies and threats from his followers. Jones has since acknowledged that the Connecticut school shooting happened . Most of the proceeds from the sale of Infowars, as well as many of Jones’ personal assets, will go to the Sandy Hook families. Some proceeds will go to Jones’ other creditors. Murray testified that he did not favor either bidder over the other and was not biased. He also revealed that First United American submitted a revised bid in recent days, but he said he could not accept it because the Sandy Hook families in the Connecticut lawsuit objected. The Onion valued its bid, with the Sandy Hook families’ offer, at $7 million, because that amount was equal to a purchase price that would provide the same amount of money to the other creditors. In a court filing last month, Murray's lawyers called First United American's request to disqualify The Onion's bid a “disappointed bidder's improper attempt to influence an otherwise fair and open election process.” Murray's lawyer questioned him Tuesday afternoon. Attorneys for Jones and First United American were cross-examining him later Tuesday. In his opening argument Monday, Jones attorney Ben Broocks said there was no way The Onion should have been chosen over First United American. “How does a $1.75 million bid beat a $3.5 million bid?” he asked. “How is that $1.75 million greater? Well, it’s voodoo economics, to use a phrase.” Auctioneer Jeff Tanenbaum on Monday defended both the value of the bid and its selection. Up for sale were all the equipment and other assets in the Infowars studio in Austin, as well as the rights to its social media accounts, websites, video archive and product trademarks. Jones uses the studio to broadcast his far-right, conspiracy theory-filled shows on the Infowars website, his account on the social platform X and radio stations. Jones has set up another studio, websites and social media accounts in case The Onion wins approval to buy Infowars and kicks him out. Jones has said he could continue using the Infowars platforms if the auction winner is friendly to him. Jones is appealing the $1.5 billion in judgments citing free speech rights.Police are urging people not to travel on Scotland's roads on Saturday as Storm Bert looks set to bring more heavy snowfall across the country. A Met Office amber warning is already in place for parts of the Highlands, Aberdeenshire, Perth and Kinross and Angus. The Toronto Blue Jays have pulled off a trade, bringing in a big-time batter for next season. The team is getting Andrés Giménez from the Cleveland Guardians, . The 26-year-old second baseman has put up strong numbers in his MLB career thus far. Giménez has played five seasons for the Guardians and New York Mets. He has a .261 batting average, 505 hits, 49 home runs, 222 RBIs, 251 runs scored, and has won three Gold Glove awards. He was also an All-Star in 2022 when he was just 23 years old, finishing that season with a career-high 17 home runs and 69 RBIs. The Blue Jays are also getting reliever Nick Sandlin but losing infielder Spencer Horwitz, per . Sandlin is 27 years old and pitched 57.2 innings over 68 games with the Guardians last year. Heading the other way, the 27-year-old Horwitz hit 12 home runs with the Blue Jays in 2024 and batted .265. The Venezuelan Giménez has three straight seasons with a Gold Glove award and at least 60 RBIs. He’ll help solidify the middle of the infield and shore up the defence, as the club was 11th in the American League last year in runs-allowed-per-game. The Blue Jays finished last in the AL East this past season and are looking to improve upon that. The trade for Giménez is their second major addition of the day, as . Giménez is under contract through the 2029 MLB season. His salary will be just over $10.5 million this upcoming year before rising to just over $15.5 million in 2026. It will then jump one last time to over $23 million for the next three seasons. His contract also includes a club option for 2030. The Blue Jays do have Will Wagner, who can play second base, so it’s possible they move Giménez to another infield spot, or the two battle it out for the starting position.LAS VEGAS — With a restructuring at Andretti Global that pushed Michael Andretti into a smaller role, the chances of his organization landing a Formula 1 team have substantially increased. So much so that F1 and Formula One Management could have a decision to grant the General Motors-backed entry a spot as the 11th team on the grid in the coming weeks. Dan Towriss, now the majority owner of the Andretti organization, was at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Thursday scoping his chances of entering the top motorsports series in the world. So was the FBI, allegedly, as part of a Department of Justice investigation into why F1 denied the Andretti organization expansion into the series. F1 currently has 10 teams that field 20 cars and only one — the organization owned by California businessman Gene Haas — is an American team. Las Vegas marks the third race this season in the United States, more than any other country, as F1 has exploded in American popularity over the last five years. Even so, Andretti could not get approval from F1 to enter the series. But, the situation changed in September when Andretti scaled back his role with his namesake organization. Now with Towriss in charge, talks have amplified, even though it is not clear what the name of an Andretti-less F1 team would even be. Cadillac would do the engines — but says it won't be ready until 2028 — which means a 2026 Towriss-led F1 team would be GM branded but with a partner engine supplier. Most of the existing teams have been largely opposed to an 11th team entering F1, citing a dilution in prize money and the massive expenses they've already committed to the series. But, Andretti among others believed the teams' position was personal in that they simply didn't like Andretti, who ran 13 races in the 1993 season. His father, Mario, is the 1978 F1 world champion. The Andretti application had already been approved by the FIA, which is F1's ruling body, but later denied by F1 itself. F1 promised to revisit the issue once General Motors had an engine ready to compete. The existing 10 F1 teams have no actual vote or say in if the grid is expanded, which Mercedes boss Toto Wolff reiterated Thursday when The Associated Press asked why the sudden chance of acceptance in a potential 11th team. "We have an obligation, a statutory obligation as directors, to present the standpoint that is the best for our company and for our employees, and we've done that," Wolff said. "I think if a team can add to the championship, particularly if GM decides to come in as a team owner, that is a different story. "And as long as it is creative, that means we're growing the popularity of the sport, we're growing the revenue of the sport, then no team will be ever against it. So I'm putting my hope in there." Wolff has been eager to hear from Towriss directly on what the plans for the organization are now that Andretti has a smaller role. "No one from Andretti or Andretti Global or whatever the name will be has ever spoken to me a single sentence in presentation of what the creative part is," he said. "But they don't need to because the teams don't decide. It is the commercial rights holder, with the FIA, we have no say. If I want to be invited to a party and go to the party, I'm sitting down at the table and telling who I am and why I'm really good fun and sitting here and everybody will enjoy my presence. "That hasn't happened, but you know, that's now my personal point of view, not a professional, because there's nothing we can do, nothing we can say," Wolff continued. "And I don't know the people. I've obviously spoken to Mario. I didn't speak to his son. I didn't speak to any other people that are behind that. I don't know who they are. So I know GM, GM is great." Fred Vasseur, team principal at Ferrari, said he's not opposed to another team if it adds value to F1. "The discussion is between FIA, the team, and FOM. It's not our choice," he said. "For sure, as Toto said, that if it's good for the sport, good for the show, good for the business, and adds value on the sporting side, that we are all OK."MISTRAS Group Appoints Natalia Shuman as President and Chief Executive OfficerRAPID CITY, MI — Homebuyers have the unique opportunity of playing Yellowstone rancher to a Northern Michigan backdrop. Gen. Jennie Carignan responded to comments made by Idaho Republican Sen. Jim Risch , the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who was asked on Friday whether President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth , should retract comments that he believes men and women should not serve together in combat units . “I think it’s delusional for anybody to not agree that women in combat creates certain unique situations that have to be dealt with. I think the jury’s still out on how to do that," Risch said during a panel session at the Halifax International Security Forum on Friday. Carignan, Canada's chief of defense staff and the first woman to command the armed forces of any Group of 20 or Group of Seven country, took issue with those remarks during a panel session on Saturday. "If you’ll allow me, I would first like maybe to respond to Senator Risch’s statement yesterday about women in combat because I wouldn’t want anyone to leave this forum with this idea that women are a distraction to defense and national security," Carignan said. “After 39 years of career as a combat arms officer and risking my life in many operations across the world, I can’t believe that in 2024, we still have to justify the contribution of women to their defense and to their service, in their country. I wouldn’t want anyone to leave this forum with this idea that this is that it is some kind of social experiment.” Carignan said women have participating in combat for hundreds of years but have never been recognized for fighting for their country. She noted the women military personnel in the room. “All the women sitting here in uniform, stepping in, and deciding to get into harm’s way and fight for their country, need to be recognized for doing so," she said. “So again, this is the distraction, not the women themselves." Carignan received a standing ovation at the forum, which attracts defense and security officials from Western democracies. Hegseth has reignited a debate that many thought had been long settled: Should women be allowed to serve their country by fighting on the front lines? The former Fox News commentator made it clear, in his own book and in interviews, that he believes men and women should not serve together in combat units . If Hegseth is confirmed by the Senate, he could try to end the Pentagon’s nearly decade-old practice of making all combat jobs open to women. Hegseth’s remarks have generated a barrage of praise and condemnation. Carignan was promoted to the rank of general during the change-of-command ceremony this past summer, after being chosen by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to become Canada’s first female defense chief. Carignan is no stranger to firsts. She was also the first woman to command a combat unit in the Canadian military, and her career has included deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Syria. For the last three years, she has been the chief of professional conduct and culture, a job created as a result of the sexual misconduct scandal in 2021. Her appointment this year comes as Canada continues to face criticism from NATO allies for not spending 2% of its gross domestic product on defense. The Canadian government recently said that it would reach its NATO commitment by 2032. Risch said Friday Trump would laugh at Canada’s current military spending plans and said the country must do more.
