Swindon Magistrates' Court heard that James Cousins, 31, of Salisbury, showed a “flagrant disregard for people and their property” when he was sentenced on Monday, November 11. He was sentenced after he indicated a guilty plea to one count of theft from a motor vehicle and two counts of fraud by false representation. He was initially due to make his plea a week earlier, but the defence requested an adjournment because Cousins refused to leave his cell. He used stolen bank cards to purchase goods worth £100.26 on the same day. The next day, he used stolen bank cards to “to make a gain, namely £2.90 for yourself”. Magistrates sentenced him to an eight-week custodial sentence. They said his offences were “so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified” and he had shown “a flagrant disregard for people and their property”. Cousins' guilty plea was taken into account when he was sentenced. No order was made for him to pay court costs.

Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to Noah Gray for the second straight week as the Kansas City Chiefs held off the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. A week after losing at Buffalo, the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (10-1) maintained their position atop the AFC. Mahomes completed a 35-yard touchdown strike to Gray on the game’s opening possession and found him again for an 11-yard TD in the second quarter. Gray has four touchdown catches in the last two weeks — twice as many as nine-time Pro Bowler Travis Kelce has all season — and has become a weapon in the passing game for the Chiefs, who lost top wide receiver Rashee Rice to a season-ending knee injury in Week 4. Kelce was still a factor Sunday with a team-high six catches for 62 yards, although the four-time All-Pro looked dejected after dropping one easy pass. Kelce has 62 receptions for 507 yards this season, while Gray has 26 catches for 249 yards. But Gray’s development is a good sign for the Chiefs — and he’s on the same page with Mahomes. On his second TD, Gray said Mahomes “gave me the answer to the test there” before the play. “He told me what coverage it was pre-snap,” said Gray, who had four receptions for 66 yards. “That’s just the blessing you have of playing with a quarterback like that. Offensive line did a great job blocking that up and the receivers did a great job running their routes to pop me open. Really just a group effort right there on that touchdown.” Gray said that’s nothing new. “Pat’s preparation, his leadership is just something that I’m fortunate enough to play alongside,” Gray said. “I love it. It gets me motivated every time we go out there for a long drive. Having a leader like that, that prepares every single week in-and out, knows defenses, knows the game plans. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “I’m just fortunate enough to play alongside a guy like that.” Mahomes completed 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three TDs, and he knew what to do on the second TD to Gray. “It’s not just me, it’s the quarterback coaches and the players, we go through certain checks you get to versus certain coverages,” Mahomes said. “I was able to see by the way they lined up they were getting into their cover-zero look. I alerted the guys to make sure they saw what I saw and I gave the check at the line of scrimmage.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Advertisement Advertisement
New Texas DPS Mounted Border Team Tracks Down Migrant Got-Aways on RanchesSecond periods have been a problem for Utah Hockey Club this season. That changed on Saturday. The team used the middle frame to score three goals against the Buffalo Sabres in the eventual 5-2 win at KeyBank Center. What’s more, Utah allowed just five shots on goal, zero goals against and was never shorthanded in the second. In the six games before Saturday’s matchup in Buffalo, Utah had been outscored 10-4 in the second. Utah often comes out strong in the first period and falls off by the 40-minute mark, letting its opponents steal the momentum heading into the final stanza. Things were different against the Sabres. “When we play with that kind of pace, we play as well with the puck, we make a lot of good plays, we use the weight of the ice and we went at the net,” said head coach André Tourigny who won his 100th NHL game. “I like the way we played offensively and defensively.” After Tyson Kozak gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead in the first period, Utah took control of the matinee matchup. Michael Kesselring , who skated in his 100th NHL game, tied things 1-1 at 3:18 of the second. A strong forecheck from Utah kept the puck in the zone before Kesselring got it at the point, carried it toward the high slot and blasted it in. “I think we just stayed on them, managed the puck pretty well, took advantage of our chances. Kind of got the momentum and kept it,” Kesselring said. Utah took a 2-1 advantage 24 seconds later thanks to Mikhail Sergachev . Michael Carcone — followed by three Buffalo players — drove to the net and opened space for Sergachev to wire the puck home from the left side after Alex Kerfoot pushed it up to him. Sergachev now has seven goals and 17 points in his first season with Utah — six short of Clayton Keller who leads the team with 23. (AP Photo/Jeffrey T. Barnes) Nick Schmaltz — who had a goal overturned for goaltender interference in the first period — cashed in with 51.5 seconds remaining in the middle frame. Kesselring controlled the puck through the zone before finding Schmaltz on the doorstep who knocked it in for the 3-1 scoreline. Schmaltz, after going 23 games goalless, has four in the last three contests. With the assists on the play, Kesselring logged a Gordie Howe hat trick (goal, assist and fight in one game); the 24-year-old fought Beck Malenstyn before Schmaltz’s last-minute tally. The play also marked the defenseman’s 14th point of the season and second of the afternoon. Kesselring is now seven points away from matching his total last year (21 through 65 games) and is on pace for a career showing in Utah. “Great job. Scored a big goal, he skated well,” Tourigny said of Kesselring. “Skated the puck out of trouble a few times. I like the fact that he did not try to complicate his game a lot on the other side of the red line.” Despite winning only one of its last three games ahead of Saturday, Utah played some of its best hockey of the season last week. Those building blocks — finding consistency between periods, limiting opposing chances and fighting for offense — all came to fruition in Buffalo. Utah earned a two-goal lead as a result which lightened the to-do list in the final 20 minutes. The offensive burst carried into the third in which Jack McBain and Kevin Stenlund joined the fun. All aboard the Bain Train 🚂 Chooo Chooo 🚂 pic.twitter.com/9PdeNP18Du Logan Cooley — who has been skating with a heightened sense of confidence in his sophomore season — swerved his way to the front and swung the puck over to McBain who was stationed near the crease where he flipped the puck in. McBain’s ninth goal of the season made it 4-1. Stenlund’s snipe from the low, right circle put Utah up 5-1 at 12:07 and was his first goal since Oct. 12. Buffalo got on the board once more at 17:40 of the third with a wrist shot from Jiri Kulich to bring the game to its final 5-2 score. “It was a nice feeling,” Stenlund said. Utah’s depth is starting to show on a more regular basis. The team got goals from three of its four lines and two defensemen on Saturday while 12 players logged at least a point. When everyone is contributing, Utah has proven it can separate itself from its opponent and put together dominant wins. The team will look to do exactly that in back-to-back games as it faces the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night at Wells Fargo Center. “It’s huge. Obviously we want to get away with four points here,” Stenlund said of the two-game road trip. “Big game tomorrow. Focus on that and move on.”
CHICAGO (AP) — Cairo Santos had a field goal blocked — again. DeAndre Carter muffed a punt in the second half. And those were just the special teams mistakes for the struggling Chicago Bears. Santos' blocked field goal and Carter's turnover were part of another sloppy performance for Chicago in its fifth consecutive loss. The pair of miscues helped set up two of Minnesota's three touchdowns in a 30-27 overtime victory . The Bears (4-7) closed out a miserable three-game homestand after they won their first three games of the season at Soldier Field. They were in position to beat Green Bay last weekend before Santos' 46-yard field goal attempt was blocked on the final play of the Packers' 20-19 win . “It’s tough. ... When things just aren’t going your way, you gotta put your head down and just keep going to work,” tight end Cole Kmet said. “It’s not easy to do but that’s kind of where we’re at.” Chicago and Minnesota were tied at 7 when Caleb Williams threw incomplete on third-and-4 at the Vikings 30 early in the second quarter. Bears coach Matt Eberflus sent Santos out for a 48-yard attempt, but it was knocked down by defensive lineman Jerry Tillery. “I think it was the penetration with the trajectory of the ball,” Santos said. “Had the ball started 3 or 4 inches to the right of both those guys' hands, I think it still goes in through the uprights.” Brian Asamoah returned the blocked kick 22 yards to set the Vikings up with good field position. Sam Darnold then capped a six-play, 53-yard drive with a 5-yard TD pass to Jalen Nailor for a 14-7 lead with 6:29 left in the first half. It was the third blocked field goal for Santos this year, the most for Chicago in a single season since it also had three blocked in 2012. Santos also had a 43-yard try blocked in the fourth quarter of a 35-16 victory over Jacksonville on Oct. 13. The Bears became the first NFL team to allow three blocked field goals in a season since the Browns and Ravens each had three blocked in 2022. “Whenever that happens two games in a row we’ve got to make sure we take a hard look in terms of the protection, the technique and who we have in there,” Eberflus said. “So it's going to be a big thing to look at.” Chicago trailed 17-10 when it forced a Minnesota punt midway through the third quarter. Carter warned his teammates to get out of the way, but it hit the ground and bounced off the inside of his right leg before it was recovered by Bo Richter at the Bears 15. The Vikings turned the mental error into Aaron Jones' 2-yard touchdown run and a 24-10 lead. “Gotta get out of the way of the ball. That’s on me,” Carter said. “I let the team down today. Game shouldn’t have been in the situation it was in. I felt bad for the guys.” Santos and Carter both played a role in a late rally for Chicago. Carter had a 55-yard kickoff return, and Santos got an onside kick to work before making a tying 48-yarder on the final play of regulation. But the Bears stalled on the first possession of overtime, and Darnold drove the Vikings downfield to set up Parker Romo's winning 29-yard field goal. “We're losing in the most unreal situations,” Bears receiver DJ Moore said. “Now it's like the luck's got to go in our favor at some point.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL
SMU has plenty to play for when it closes the regular season against California on Saturday afternoon in Dallas. The Mustangs (10-1, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who checked in at No. 9 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, would like to send their seniors off the right way. They would also like to complete a perfect regular season before appearing in the ACC title game in their first year in the conference. Most importantly, they want to continue to strengthen their playoff case. "You've got the College Football Playoff, so every game matters. That's what's so cool about it now. The regular season is important," SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said. "We'd like to finish well in everything we do, particularly on Saturday, to finish off the regular season, continue our momentum into the following week. Hopefully, continue to show the committee and others that we're worthy of continuing to play this year." The Mustangs are a worthy playoff team to date. Kevin Jennings has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, throwing for 2,521 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also has rushed for 315 yards and four TDs. Brashard Smith has been another standout, rushing for 1,089 yards and 13 TDs. Defensively, the Mustangs rank tied for 14th in the country with 20 takeaways. "Obviously they've had a phenomenal season," Cal coach Justin Wilcox said of SMU. "As soon as you turn the tape on, it doesn't take very long to see why their record is what it is. They're very, very good really in every phase of the game - extremely explosive and quick and fast. They've got a dominant D-line. We've got a lot of challenges in front of us and our guys are excited for that." Cal (6-5, 2-5) is coming off an emotional win, defeating rival Stanford 24-21 on Saturday to secure a bowl berth. The Golden Bears will appear in consecutive bowls for the first time since 2018-19 and are now looking to clinch their first winning season since 2019. SMU is not overlooking Cal, as all five of the Golden Bears' losses have come by one score. "You'd be hard-pressed to find a better 6-5 team in America," Lashlee said. "I think you can conservatively say they very, very easily could be 9-2." Cal is led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who has thrown for 3,004 yards with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. Tight end Jack Endries leads the team with 555 yards receiving, while wide receiver Nyziah Hunter has caught a team-leading five touchdowns. Defensively, Cal has the ACC's top scoring defense (20.7 points per game) and is tied with Clemson for the ACC's best turnover margin (plus-13). Defensive back Nohl Williams is the star of the group -- he leads the country with seven interceptions. Even though oddsmakers are heavily favoring SMU, Cal is going into the game with a simple mindset. "Our task at hand is to make the best bowl game right now," Mendoza said. "And the way to do that is to go into Dallas, give it our best and ruin SMU's season." Saturday will mark the first conference meeting between these ACC newcomers, and just the second meeting between the programs all time. SMU won a 13-6 game back in 1957. --Field Level Media
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday said that the Ladki Bahin scheme, women's participation in voting in large numbers, and religious polarisation may have played a role in Mahayuti's victory in , reported the PTI. Sharad Pawar said that the Maharashtra election result 2024, declared on Saturday, are not on the expected lines but he would revitalise the party. Responding to a query on his retirement from active politics, Sharad Pawar tersely said he and his party colleagues will decide. Speaking to reporters in Karad city in Satara district, Sharad Pawar acknowledged that the NCP led by his nephew and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar secured more seats than the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), adding "Everyone knows who founded the NCP," according to the PTI. "The Ladki Bahin scheme and religious polarisation played a role. Women's participation in large numbers could be the reason for the Mahayuti sweep in Maharashtra. We will study the reasons for the debacle and take necessary steps," he said. Sharad Pawar asserted that the NCP (SP) would go to people by re-energising the new leadership. Responding to a query on EVMs, a day after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut expressed doubts over the massive verdict in Mahayuti's favour, Pawar said he would speak about EVMs only if he has official data, as per the PTI. Sharad Pawar suffered the worst-ever defeat in his political career in with the NCP faction led by him winning only 10 seats in the 288-member House, while the Ajit Pawar-led NCP bagged 41. The Mahayuti scored a massive victory with the BJP winning 132 seats, Shiv Sena led by Shinde 57, and NCP 41. In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi was restricted to 46 seats. Pawar said the poll outcome he had witnessed in his public life was unprecedented. "The MVA coalition put in a lot of hard work but the desired results were not achieved even though people responded positively to MVA during campaigning," the NCP (SP) chief added, the news agency reported on Sunday. Pawar said that the MVA was more confident after achieving success in Lok Sabha elections, adding that more work needs to be done. When asked if he was jolted by the poll outcome, Pawar said, "The poll results were declared yesterday. Today I am in Karad. Those who were demoralised would have sat at home". He also said fielding his grandnephew Yugendra Pawar against on the home turf of Baramati wasn't a wrong decision as someone had to contest the elections. Ajit Pawar defeated Yugendra by a margin of over 1 lakh votes to win the eighth term in Baramati. "Ajit Pawar and Yugendra Pawar cannot be compared. We were aware of this fact," Sharad Pawar added, as per the PTI. (with PTI inputs)Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs leaves game because of concussion
