On Dec. 4, U.S. intelligence officials and the FBI announced a hacking campaign affecting at least eight U.S. telecommunication firms, including Verizon and AT&T. In response, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), along with domestic and international partners, issued guidance for telecommunication companies to strengthen their security. Recommendations include implementing measures like end-to-end encryption to safeguard both company and customer data. Several news outlets reported that officials are advising against sending unencrypted text messages in the aftermath of the hack, so bad actors can’t read them. VERIFY readers Barbara and Joseph asked us if Chinese hackers can actually read people’s text messages. Here’s what we can VERIFY about protecting your text message privacy. THE QUESTION Can hackers intercept and read some types of text messages? THE SOURCES Joint guide from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), National Security Agency (NSA), the FBI and other international partners published Dec. 3 Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Apple Google WhatsApp , Signal and Telegram SoCRadar and How-To Geek , technology blogs McAfee THE ANSWER Yes, hackers can intercept and read some types of text messages. But there are ways to protect them. Sign up for the VERIFY Fast Facts newsletter here . WHAT WE FOUND Messages sent between Apple and Android devices, as well as some types of messages sent between multiple Android devices, can be susceptible to hackers. But there is a type of protection that can ensure no hackers can read your texts. It’s called encryption. Encryption uses an algorithm to scramble information, like text messages, that can only be un-scrambled by the recipient’s device. This layer of protection ensures that even if hackers or scammers intercept your texts, they can’t access the content. When text messages aren’t encrypted, they travel across networks in plain text, making them vulnerable to interception, the SoCRadar and How-To Geek technology blogs explain. It’s like sending a letter without an envelope . Encrypted messages aren’t plain text. They’re transformed into what’s called ciphertext , which appears across a network as a scrambled, unreadable string of characters. Hackers can use tricks like creating fake cell towers or spying on public wireless networks to capture the messages. Without protection, text messages can be read and other personal information can be stolen. So, hypothetically, if a hacker is monitoring a network and you send a message in plain unprotected text that says, “Meet at my house at 123 Elm Street, the door will be unlocked.” That is the message a hacker can read, leaving you (and your home) vulnerable. But, if you send it as an encrypted message, a hacker would only see gibberish, like "Ff8g$%qLq9d@8z.” Your intended recipient, though, would receive the real message. Cellular providers don’t directly provide end-to-end encryption automatically, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) says , but the device manufacturers and independent messaging apps often do. Here’s how some devices work and tips to protect yourself. For Apple users : iMessages sent between Apple devices – the messages that appear in blue bubbles – are encrypted from end to end. However, messages sent from an Apple device to a non-Apple device – the messages that appear in green – are not encrypted. For Android users : For Android users using Google Messages , there is a feature known as Rich Communication Services. If that feature is turned on ( here’s how ) on both devices, the messages are encrypted. Cross-platform messaging and third-party applications: Text messages sent between Apple gadgets are encrypted, as are those exchanged between users of Google Messages, but text messages between Android and Apple devices are not encrypted, CISA says . That’s where third-party applications come in. Apps like WhatsApp , Signal and Telegram encrypt messages automatically and work between any device. WhatsApp describes their encryption technology like having a key that is exchanged between recipients. The technology locks (encrypts) a message before it leaves a device, turning it into a jumbled code. Only the recipient’s device has the unique "key" to unlock (decrypt) it and make it readable again. Stay secure with updates While the use of these technologies is important to understand, you should also keep your software updated, McAfee , a security company, says. These security updates for devices and applications patch vulnerabilities that hackers or scammers exploit. On an Android device, go to settings and click on software update. On an iPhone, go to settings, then general and then continue to software updates. B.C. premier says feds and premiers have right-left strategy to tackle Trump tariffs A meeting last week between the premiers and Trudeau discussed Canada's diversity of representation, and how it could bring leverage and advantages in tariff talks. Dirk Meissner, The Canadian Press Dec 5, 2024 2:41 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message B.C. Premier David Eby holds a press conference at the legislature in Victoria, Nov. 13. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chad Hipolito Listen to this article 00:02:29 VICTORIA — British Columbia Premier David Eby says his fellow premiers and the federal government have hatched a game plan to fight U.S. tariffs, with conservative premiers lobbying Republican counterparts, left-leaning provincial leaders courting the Democrats, and Ottawa focusing on president-elect Donald Trump. The premiers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau talked about using their political diversity and connections to thwart the prospect of Trump's proposed 25 per cent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, Eby said Thursday in a year-end interview. He said it was discussed that conservative premiers Danielle Smith in Alberta, Doug Ford in Ontario and Nova Scotia's Tim Houston are well-placed to lobby Republican governors and business leaders. Eby said as a New Democrat he will likely have more in common with Democrat governors and business leaders from the West Coast states. "I can easily have conversations with governors and businesses down the West Coast of the U.S., where we have close relationships and our politics are very similar," he said. "Premier Smith can have conversations with Republican governors. That would be more challenging for me, and (she) would have more connections potentially with the Trump administration than an NDP administration in B.C. would." He said a meeting last week between the premiers and Trudeau discussed Canada's diversity of representation, and how it could bring leverage and advantages in tariff talks. "It's interesting, there was a lot of talk about what unity means in terms of Canada's response to the tariffs," he said. "There's obviously a diversity of views around the Council of the Federation table of all the premiers. Certainly, mine is not the same as Premier Smith's or Premier Ford's or Premier Houston's, and that diversity of views is actually potentially a significant strength for us as we enter into these discussions." Eby also said he was prepared to appear on American's right-leaning Fox News TV network, as did premiers Ford and Smith. "Anything that I can do to support the national effort to protect the families in Canada from the impact of tariffs and also families in the U.S. from those unjustified tariffs," he said. "Absolutely, if I thought it was helpful." This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 5, 2024. Dirk Meissner, The Canadian Press See a typo/mistake? Have a story/tip? And last night, the star was caught breaking show rules as he was seen slipping a teabag into a pot of boiling water, leaving hosts Ant and Dec unimpressed. During Friday’s (November 22) episode of the ITV hit reality show, Danny and Dean headed down to the Bushtucker Trial area to face ‘The High Street of Horrors’. Horrified to learn they'd be joining them there, Maura and Richard also headed down to the Trial area for the day’s Bushtucker Trial, not knowing what lay in store. First to arrive were Maura and Richard and they were greeted by Ant and Dec and asked how they were enjoying the Jungle Junkyard. Ant and Dec explained to the duo that as they successfully got a bed delivered to them from main camp yesterday, they won three portions of food for the junk food buffet. They were also told that the Trial was their next opportunity to continue the charade, as they had to convince Danny and Dean that they had already taken part in ‘The Deadly Department Store’ to try and win 2 stars for their dinner, but failed. Maura and Richard both got stuck into the pretence, as they covered one another in feathers and molasses and put on their best acting performance. As Dean and Danny entered Ant joked: "Dean welcome once again. Two out of the last three you shouted ' I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. I'm not angry anymore just disappointed." Ant then told Dean and Danny what they were due to face in their part of the Trial. There were three shops, each containing a number of stars to win for camp. All they had to do was find them within the time allocated for their shopping spree. Dean and Danny stopped at the ‘Grim Grocers’ first, where there were three stars on offer and they had three minutes to find them. When the klaxon sounded, an eager Danny was in such a hurry to get into the shop, he tripped over. Plus, Dean had to come face-to-face with his arch nemesis - fish guts. Winning two stars for camp, they proceeded to the ‘Electrifying Electrical store’ where they picked up a further two stars out of three, within the three minute time slot. The star they missed was revealed by Ant and Dec to be hiding in the kettle, as they teased Dean: “We thought you’d have gone straight for the kettle, we know you love a cup of tea!” Viewers were quick to pick up on the dig after Deans rule break as they went straight to social media to share their reaction. One viewer took to X, formerly known as Twitter and said: “THE TEA SHADEEE I CANT #ImACeleb.” Another commented: “Ant and dec are absolutely trolling dean now with stars in the kettle #ImACeleb A third joked: ““How do you they know about the tea?” DEAN YOU ARE LITERALLY ON A REALITY SHOW WITH CAMERAS FILMING 24/7 #ImACeleb.” One said: “We know how much you like a cup of tea dean? #ImACeleb.” Meanwhile another added: “THEY PUT THE STAR IN THE KETTLE AHAHAHAHA DANNY IS LOVING THE TEA JOKES #ImACeleb.” I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! returns tomorrow at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX
Dating Don't miss out on the headlines from Dating. Followed categories will be added to My News. Social media users have been left horrified after a young influencer shared a “disturbing” video of herself dancing next to her much older boyfriend, who was lying in a hospital bed. In the video, Bronwin Aurora, 22, boasts about being included in the 80-year-old’s will. Ms Aurora, who has 1.5 million followers, showed off her relationship — which has a 58-year age gap — by kissing her boyfriend’s forehead before breaking into a trending TikTok dance. She danced around the bed, which was surrounded by medical equipment, to the song Keep Up by Odetari. The lyrics include, “Keep up, I’m too fast, I’m too fast, push my foot up on that pedal, then I’m gone, G-g-g-gone, gone, gone.” She captioned the clip, “Guys, I got on the will, should I pull the plug?” Her frail partner watched on and seemed either unbothered or unaware of the message she was sending to her audience. The unsettling clip has left commenters shaken, with many sharing concerns about the relationship. This video, which some think might be satirical, has amassed nearly half a million views. An influencer has sickened the internet by sharing a clip of her dancing next to her elderly boyfriend's hospital bed. TikTok/Bronwin Aurora She says she is considering “pulling the plug” because she is on his will. TikTok/Bronwin Aurora One commenter quipped, “Love your care for humanity.” “Is that something to joke about?” asked someone else. A third commenter stated, “I’m going to cry. I hope he gives everything to his kids.” “A prelude to an episode of Law and Order ,” replied someone else. Meanwhile, others called the clip, “sickening”, “outrageous” and “a new low”. Some even suggested it appeared to be “elder abuse”, a term used when a trusted person mistreats an elderly person in a physical, social, psychological, sexual, or financial manner. “I have no words,” admitted another TikToker. The social media star, who also has an OnlyFans, is 22 and her partner is 80. TikTok/Bronwin Aurora She appears to have a “sugar daddy” arrangement with the man. TikTok/Bronwin Aurora Although Ms Aurora did not disclose her boyfriend’s medical condition, it appears he was out of the hospital by mid-November, as she posted another video of herself dancing near him in a jewellery store with the caption, “How should I repay him for spending $20K on Cartier for me?” This time, her boyfriend, who always remains silent in the clips, joined in, performing a slow boogie as she danced next to him. However in her most recent post, he can be seen in a wheelchair while the pair are out to dinner. The star doesn’t shy away from sharing the details of her relationship online, telling fans in one post that she “loves” him and “takes him to pound town” in exchange for lavish gifts. George R. R. Martin Isn't Sure He'll Ever Finish The Winds of Winter, 'but That's Still a Priority'The Vancouver Canucks return to a home schedule Friday on a high. Despite missing key players in Thatcher Demko , J.T. Miller and Filip Hronek , the team went 4-1-1 in six road games over the past two weeks. That’s an impressive run. But was it all just lucky? NEXT GAME Tuesday Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Vancouver Canucks 7 p.m., Rogers Arena , TV: ESP N Pacific, Radio: Sportsnet 650 If you look at some basic shot metrics, there’s a case for, yes, definitely. For instance, MoneyPuck.com has the Canucks being not just outshot over a 10-game average, but the quality of those shots tilt heavily toward their opposition. If you look purely at the public numbers, the Canucks have been, at best, playing coin-flip hockey. Sometimes you just get lucky — and you wouldn’t be wrong to claim that is all the Canucks have been of late. But there are caveats. The picture is not as clear as you might think. Let’s take a look at all the numbers and try to understand where the Canucks stand 24 games into the season. According to Natural Stat Trick, the Canucks’ defence has been the league’s stingiest so far, if you believe their expected goals model — they’ve yielded just 39.8 total this season. The Canucks are just incredibly tough to break down defensively because they command the slot very well. The numbers reflect this. Rick Tocchet ’s teams are known for being hard-edged defensively. Sure, there are moments of madness from the likes of Tyler Myers or Vincent Desharnais, for example, but zooming out to the big picture tells the truth: they’re just not giving up many good chances, night in, night out. Quinn Hughes is eating tons and tons of minutes. He’s playing great in those minutes, racking up point totals rarely seen from a blueliner. And that offensive production isn’t empty, either — it’s leading to utter two-way dominance. When Hughes in on the ice at five-on-five, the Canucks are giving up just 0.75 shot attempts per minute. That’s one of the best rates in the league. He’s 19:30 playing time at five-on-five per game. In other words, for a full third of the game every night, the ice tilted heavily toward the offensive end of the ice for the Canucks. That is a big factor in why they still look to be playing well overall, because they’re so rarely defending. As is well-documented by now, the Canucks have given up the first goal of the game a disturbing number of times. Out of the 24 games played so far by the Canucks, 14 times they have fallen behind first. They’ve ended the first period trailing 10 times. Five of those games they went on to win. That they have won half of the games where they were trailing after 20 stands out. Most teams lose most of their games if they are trailing after just one period. It’s just very difficult to do night after night. The Canucks need to start scoring first. What they’ve been doing so far is just not sustainable. The Canucks newly assembled first line is producing, and they are dominating play. The success that Jake DeBrusk, Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser are having is not a mirage. The Canucks are taking 63.6 per cent, nearly two-thirds, of the total shot attempts when this trio is on the ice. When your first line is dominating like this, that’s a winning formula. And playing at home, where you can control the matchups, means the Pettersson line stands an even better chance of dominating. Pettersson said Thursday it’s still a bit of a mystery to him why his team has struggled to play better at home — but it is difficult to fathom his line as they are playing right now, suddenly struggling because they’re now playing at home. If the Canucks’ performance at home is going to match the play on the road, it’s really going to come down to how he and Hughes play, above all else. pjohnston@postmedia.com
