Article content Caitlin Clark raised the profile of women’s basketball to unprecedented levels in both the college ranks and the WNBA, and Tuesday she was named the AP Female Athlete of the Year for her impact on and off the court. After leading Iowa to the national championship game, Clark was the top pick in the WNBA draft as expected and went on to win rookie of the year honors in the league. Fans packed sold-out arenas and millions of television viewers tuned in to follow her journey. Clark’s exploits were far reaching, casting a light on other women’s sports leagues along the way. A group of 74 sports journalists from The Associated Press and its members voted on the award. Clark received 35 votes, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles was second with 25 and boxer Imane Khelif was third, getting four votes. Clark is only the fourth women’s basketball player to be honored as the female athlete of the year since it was first presented in 1931, joining Sheryl Swoopes (1993), Rebecca Lobo (1995) and Candace Parker (2008, 2021). “I grew up a fan of Candace Parker and the people who came before me and to be honored in this way, is super special and I’m thankful,” Clark said in a phone interview. “It was a great year for women’s basketball and women’s sports.” Shohei Ohtani won the AP Male Athlete of the Year on Monday for the third time. Clark broke the NCAA Division I career scoring record for both men and women finishing her career with 3,951 points while guiding Iowa to its second consecutive national championship game. After her Hawkeyes lost to South Carolina for the title, Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley took the mic during her team’s celebration and said, “I want to personally thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport.” For all the success Clark has had and the attention she has brought to women’s basketball, she is often the centerpiece of debates and online toxicity towards her and other players in the league. For her part, Clark has disavowed the toxic discourse. Lobo also has been impressed with the way the 22-year-old Clark has handled the pressure and attention that has come her way. “I would say she’s navigated it almost flawlessly. she hasn’t had an big missteps or misspeaks at a time you’re under constant scrutiny,” Lobo said. “She’s seemed to say and do all the right things. That’s just incredible at a time when it’s constant attention and scrutiny. She has not done anything to tarnish this sort of mild persona she has.” As Clark handled the praise — and the backlash — during the heat of competition, it was hard for her to appreciate just what she was able accomplish over the past year. But after having time to reflect on the whirlwind tour, she appreciates those who were there alongside her for the ride. “I’m thankful for the people I got to do it with,” Clark said. “A year ago I was still in the early part of my senior year in college. ... How fast things change, and now I can see how great a college season it was.” Iowa sold out all of its games at home and on the road with Clark as the main attraction. That momentum continued into the pros. Her No. 22 jersey was prevalent wherever she played during her rookie season and will be retired at Iowa. “You’d be remiss not to acknowledge how crazy her fan base is and the eyes she gets with everything she does,” said Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton, who was often spotted courtside at Clark’s Indiana Fever games. “It’s a different type of popularity, she’s one of the most popular athletes in the world. It’s not just women’s sports anymore. “It’s really cool to see and she just handles it with such grace.” Clark said she enjoys spending time with fans at games, usually taking a few minutes before and after games to sign autographs. “For me it’s still really fun,” she said. “Whether it’s 15 seconds or 10 seconds or 5 seconds can be very impactful in a young girl and young boys life. Seeing the fans going crazy an hour before tipoff, I never take that for granted. That’s super cool and I never want that to go away.” After a slow start to her WNBA career, Clark eventually found her stride there too. She set the single-game assist record with 19 and also had 337 assists on the season to break that mark as well. Clark, known for her logo-distance 3-pointers, was the fastest player to reach 100 3’s when she did it in 34 games which helped Indiana reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Lobo, who won the AP female athlete of the year award after lifting UConn to its first national championship, was on the court for launch of the WNBA two years later. The ESPN analyst sees Clark’s ascension as something different. “She’s brought unprecedented attention both in the building, but also viewership to the sport that was worthy of it but didn’t have it yet,” Lobo said. “There’s never been anything like this. “That timeframe from 1995-97 was a baby step in the progression of it all. This is a giant leap forward. I’ve never seen anything like this. There’s more attention then the sports ever had.” The numbers have been record breaking when Clark is part of a broadcast: — TV viewership in the WNBA was up 300% thanks in large part to Clark with ABC, CBS, ION, ESPN, and ESPN2 all having record viewers when Fever games were on. — The NCAA women’s championship game outdrew the men on TV for the first time in the sport’s 42-year history with 18.9 million viewers tuning it to watch the event. It was the second most watched women’s sporting event outside of the Olympics in the history of U.S. television. — The 2024 WNBA draft was the most-watched in league history with 2.4 million viewers. Clark credits the community of women athletes for the popularity increase of women’s sports, saying “we” did this or “we” did that when asked about it. “It’s fascinating, you don’t always appreciate how many people 18 million is,” Clark said. “You see that number against a college football game or the Masters or whatever it is as far as the biggest sporting events in our country and it puts it in perspective. We outdrew the men’s Final Four.”
Man accused in burning death of a woman on New York subway appears in courtKirk Ferentz made sure to note the number one rule before offering his thoughts on Bill Belichick’s decision to return to coaching. “Rule number one for Bill is do not talk for other people,” Ferentz said. “Keep that in mind.” New North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick holds up a UNC branded sleeveless hoodie presented to him during an NCAA college football press conference announcing his hiring, Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024, in Chapel Hill, N.C. (AP Photo/Ben McKeown) To Ferentz, the decision from the eight-time Super Bowl winner to take over as the head coach at North Carolina demonstrated a clear passion for the game. “It says he loves coaching,” Ferentz said. “I think that is pretty evident. The other logical thing, if you watch his press conference, he talked about his dad. His dad was a career college coach at the Naval Academy, most of his career. Coincidentally, (he spent) a couple years at UNC, which is interesting. ... His dad was an amazing person. You can see where Bill’s love of football came from because his dad was all about football all the time.” New North Carolina head football coach Bill Belichick waves to the crowd at Dean Smith Center during halftime of an NCAA college basketball game between La Salle and North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024. (AP Photo/Ben McKeown) During his introductory press conference in Chapel Hill last week, Belichick cited his love for coaching as his reason for returning to the sideline at 72 years old, confirming Ferentz's suspicions. “When you love what you do, it is not work,” Belichick said. “I love what I do. I love coaching. I love the interactions with the players. I love building a team, working with assistants, game-planning, the game itself.” The all-time winningest head coach in Iowa’s history then jokingly offered his advice to his former boss from his time with the Cleveland Brown as Belichick joins the college ranks for the first time in his storied career. “Turn around and run like hell,” Ferentz said. Joking aside, Ferentz said he expects Belichick to find success with the Tar Heels despite his exclusively professional resume after starting as a special assistant with the Baltimore Colts in 1975. (AP Photo/Ben McKeown) “Football is football — pro, college or high school,” Ferentz said. “If you are coaching, then you love coaching. I think it is not a surprise at all. I think it is probably a genius move at UNC.” “Nobody is more adept at handling change or crazy circumstances. ... He is ultra-successful for a lot of reasons. He can take whatever presents itself and he is going to figure out a way to work through it.” Ferentz specifically cited the Browns’ decision to cut quarterback Bernie Kosar midway through the 1993 season, and the relocation of the franchise to Baltimore in the middle of the 1995 season, as evidence of Belichick’s ability to adapt on the fly. “He does not need my advice,” Ferentz said. “He will do really well. I know he will have really good people around him, starting with Mike Lombardi. He will be ready to roll.” Ferentz highlighted Belichick’s “firsthand exposure” through his father, Steve Belichick, and his son Stephen Belichick’s role as defensive coordinator at Washington and his scouting experience as additional reasons to be confident in the future Hall of Fame coach. “He spent time up there with Steve,” Ferentz said. “He has gotten firsthand exposure live and in-person. He knows the college game from going around scouting, talking to college coaches frequently regarding prospects.” Like Ferentz’s inclination regarding his love for coaching, Belichick also affirmed Ferentz’s inclinations regarding his familiarity with the college game during his presser. “This really kind of a dream come true,” Belichick said. “I grew up in college football with my dad as a coach at Navy for 50 years. As a kid, all I knew was college football. So, it is great to come back home to Carolina and back in an environment that I really grew up in. “When you are little, you do not remember everything. I was too young to remember a lot of things from Carolina, but as I grew up, you hear the same stories over and over and over again. So one story I always heard was Billy’s first words were: Beat Duke.” Belichick also mentioned he saw a lot of parallels between the college and professional levels of college football. “There are certainly some differences, but there are some parallels,” Belichick said. “That is the reason for the general structure of (the staff) Michael (Lombardi) as a general manager, myself as a coach and working together collaboratively like we have done in a professional organization.” Belichick’s work is cut out for him. On Saturday, the Tar Heels fell to Connecticut 27-14 in the Fenway Bowl to finish the season 6-7 and 12 th in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). North Carolina’s 2024 recruiting class also ranks fourth in the ACC despite bringing in more recruits (33) than any other team in the league. Nonetheless, Ferentz sees success ahead for Belichick and the Tar Heels. “Just make sure they are not on our schedule,” Ferentz said. “That would be a task there.” Iowa’s backfield in good hands against Missouri despite Kaleb Johnson’s exit SEC Bias? Published 21:44 IST, December 24th 2024 Chairman of the Telangana Film Development Corporation, Dil Raju visited KIMS Hospital to meet Sri Tej's family to ensure that both the film industry and government would extend all necessary assistance. Film producer and Chairman of the Telangana Film Development Corporation, Dil Raju, has shared that Sri Tej, the victim of the Sandhya Theatre tragedy and the son of Revathi, who lost her life in the incident, is responding well to treatment and has been taken off the ventilator two days ago. Dil Raju visited KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, to meet Sri Tej's family. Speaking to ANI, he revealed that he had earlier met Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to discuss providing support to Sri Tej's family, ensuring that both the film industry and government would extend all necessary assistance. "He (the child injured in the Sandhya Theatre incident during the premiere show of Pushpa 2) is responding and recovering... He was taken off the ventilator two days ago," said Dil Raju. Sri Tej's father, Baskar, also spoke to the media and shared a positive update, stating that his son is slowly recovering. Earlier, the producers of Pushpa 2, Naveen Yerneni and Ravi Shankar, handed over a Rs 50 lakh cheque to the victim's family at KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad, in the presence of Telangana Minister for Roads & Buildings and Cinematography, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy. The cheque was received by Revathi's husband, the father of Sri Tej, who is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. The tragic incident occurred on December 4, when Allu Arjun attended the premiere of Pushpa 2: The Rule. A large crowd gathered to see him, and the situation escalated when he waved to fans from the sunroof of his car. Revathi lost her life, and her son, Sri Tej, was injured. Following the incident, Allu Arjun was arrested and later released on bail after posting a Rs 50,000 bond. The case took another turn when the Pushpa actor was served a notice to appear for questioning in connection with the Sandhya Theatre tragedy. "The case is under investigation, and your presence is essential before the undersigned officer to elicit answers about the incident and, if necessary, to visit the scene of the offence to ascertain the true facts," read the notice issued by the Telangana Police. Actor Allu Arjun has since returned to his residence after appearing at the Chikkadpally police station in Hyderabad in connection with the incident. On December 22, a group of protestors demanding justice for Revathi attacked Allu Arjun's residence. According to DCP West Zone, Hyderabad, the group arrived holding placards and shouting slogans. One individual climbed the compound wall and began throwing stones, prompting security to intervene. During the altercation, the protestors damaged flower pots and manhandled security personnel. Six individuals, claiming to be members of the Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OU-JAC), were taken into custody and later granted bail. The incident has also sparked political controversy. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy blamed Allu Arjun for the tragedy, stating in the Assembly that police had denied permission for any event at Sandhya Theatre due to safety concerns. The actor, however, dismissed the allegations, calling them an attempt at “character assassination.” Get Current Updates on India News , Entertainment News along with Latest News and Top Headlines from India and around the world. By Lori Powers Henderson I’ve been living in the Near Southside since I was 2. We lived in a house that my great-great uncle Andy (W.A. Powers) owned in Fairmount, and we were right next door to him. We ended up moving to Euless when I was in high school, but I grew up on the Southside of Fort Worth. I moved away to college, graduated and lived in Dallas, because you always want to get out of your town and do bigger and better things. And it’s funny that I ended up here; I would never go back to Dallas. It’s crazy chaotic. Fort Worth is such a great town to be in. You have everything that you need. It kind of feels like a small town but also a big city. It’s so walkable and it’s hard for us to leave this neighborhood. If we’re going to dinner with the family, we can all get in the car and drive someplace and try to find a parking place. But why do that when we can walk out the door and have a choice of every kind of food? Get essential daily news for the Fort Worth area. Sign up for insightful, in-depth stories — completely free. Two Sundays a month, we have gigantic markets. The Fort Worth Community Market has live music and 50 vendors selling fresh vegetables, artisan goods like candles and soaps, and flowers and plants. And then we have the Rock ’n’ Roll Rummage Sale with local art, jewelry and vintage clothing. It has 130 vendors and live music throughout the day. A Fort Worth couple, Blake and Tiffany Parish, with Honeysuckle Rose Events , put these events together. They bring thousands of people to the neighborhood. It’s been so amazing. People come to the event and end up walking our area and then walk over to the next block and go to a different restaurant that’s not part of SOMA , our development. They’ll go over to HopFusion and have a beer and discover what a great part of Fort Worth this is. There are so many fun businesses popping up and new residential. I can’t imagine what it’ll look like in 10 years. My buildings at SOMA are restaurant and retail. We now have Morgan Mercantile , Winton and Waits , Southside Cellar , Tarantula Tiki Lounge , Panther City Tattoo , South Barbershop and Tinies Mexican as tenants, plus all of our food truck vendors. When we first moved here, there weren’t that many people or retail restaurant-type businesses. Just a few small apartment buildings and industrial warehouses. None of these big apartment complexes was here. The growth is amazing. It’s been fun watching the changes. My kids have never known any different. Walking out their back door, there’s 100 small businesses out there with their pop-ups, and they love it. They can walk out and get churros on a Thursday evening from Leo’s Churro Bar . And just the fact that we’ve been able to do Volt Cowtown , our electric surf shop, has been great. About three years ago, my kids started coaching people on how to ride an electric surfboard called Lift . It evolved, and we decided to cut a tiny little piece out of our big Daggett Avenue warehouse and make Volt our family business. We sell personal electric vehicles plus all kinds of fun clothing and accessories. The triplets created their own candle line for Volt, collaborating with a Near Southside neighbor and candle maker, Apothenne . The kids mixed the scents and even created the label design on their school computers. The kids work in the shop. They run the cash register. They handle inventory. They help me with every part of it — and they’re great at it. They’re never going to have any fear about starting up a business, because they’ve been doing it their whole life. It’d be interesting if we were to move what the kids would like better. Would they like having a backyard to run around in or would they rather have this urban backyard? The micro park has been their play space. They come out here and play soccer, and they ride their Onewheels and electric skateboards. It’s very easy from here to get onto the Trinity Trails. My husband, Tucker, and the kids will just go through downtown, hop on the trail, ride all around and then come back. They do that most weekends when the weather is nice. And we get on the TEXRail train at T&P Station across the street and go to the airport for vacations. We just walk out the back door with our rollaboards. We’ve gone to concerts, games at American Airlines Center and the State Fair on the TRE train. When Tucker and I were living in Dallas, we had heard about all this stuff happening with this group called Near Southside Inc. We never imagined it would become what it is today. I’m so glad we took the chance, sold our house and started our projects here on South Main. My dad had been here since he was 17. And he watched it evolve to this bustling little area from way way back to where all the windows were boarded up. We had bars on the windows of all our South Main properties when we took them over. He couldn’t imagine it would be what it is today, because he’d been there so long watching it kind of deteriorate. I just started talking to him and asking why don’t we start developing it. I said, “Let me do it. Sell me some of the properties, and I’ll just start doing it.” And that’s what we did. We have partners in the buildings. We have a group called SOMA District Development, which is mostly family members. My parents, Tucker’s parents, us and then a couple of friends got together to buy the buildings from my dad and uncle and get the money together to get them ready to lease. Tucker and I are the managing partners, so I’m here for the day-to-day operations. Tucker and I redid the warehouse — our home — in 2014. We designated it historic. We’re not sure when it was built. We’re thinking sometime in the early 1900s. It was used for storage, and we gutted it. We have four bedrooms, three baths, a huge living area, 6,200 square feet in total. It’s really way, way too big for us as a family. So big that when the weather is bad, the kids skateboard through the house. My triplets have grown up in our house since they were probably 11⁄2, almost 2, so this is the only home they’ve known. Fort Worth is so cool these days I’d imagine they’ll come back after college and pick up right where they left off in the family business. There is really something for everybody here. This side of downtown is more artsy, creative. You can’t walk too far without running into an artist or entrepreneur. North of downtown is just as interesting with the Stockyards, where you can hardly go without seeing somebody wearing boots or a cowboy hat. To me, Fort Worth is just a really fun, diverse town. Lori Powers Henderson, her husband, Tucker, and their 12-year-old triplets live in a warehouse in South Main Village that they bought from her father and converted into a home. Her great-great uncle W.A. Powers was a longtime business owner and property owner on South Main. Henderson has purchased those properties from her family and gradually redeveloped them with restaurant and retail tenants and urban amenities like permanently stationed food trucks and the South Main District Micro Park . The 18-team conference had three of the top-four teams in the AP poll this week — No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Penn State. A one-loss Indiana team is ranked 10th but is still very much a contender to make the playoff, given how many Southeastern Conference teams have three defeats or more. Indiana's rise has been perhaps the Big Ten's biggest story this season. Much of the spotlight was on newcomers Oregon, Southern California, UCLA and Washington, but aside from the top-ranked Ducks, that foursome has struggled to impress. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers won their first 10 games under new coach Curt Cignetti before losing at Ohio State last weekend. Oregon beat Ohio State 32-31 back in October, and if the Buckeyes beat rival Michigan this weekend, they'll earn a rematch with the Ducks for the Big Ten title. People are also reading... And it's entirely possible another matchup between those two teams awaits in the CFP. Star power Dillon Gabriel has quarterbacked Oregon to an unbeaten record, throwing for 3,066 yards and 22 touchdowns in 11 games. But don't overlook Iowa's Kaleb Johnson and his 21 rushing TDs, and quarterback Kurtis Rourke has been a big part of Indiana's improvement. Penn State's Abdul Carter has eight sacks and two forced fumbles and could be one of the top edge rushers drafted this year. Going bowling Oregon (11-0, 8-0), Ohio State (10-1, 7-1), Penn State (10-1, 7-1), Indiana (10-1, 7-1), Illinois (8-3, 5-3), Iowa (7-4, 5-3), Michigan (6-5, 4-4), Minnesota (6-5, 4-4), Washington (6-5, 4-4), Southern California (6-5, 4-5), Nebraska (6-5, 3-5) and Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) have already reached the six-win mark for bowl eligibility. Michigan State (5-6, 3-5) and Wisconsin (5-6, 3-5) can join them. Hot seats There may not be many firings in general at the top level of college football. The prospect of sharing revenue with athletes in the future might lead schools to be more judicious about shedding one coach and hiring a new one. Who should be most worried in the Big Ten? Well, Lincoln Riley is struggling to stay above .500 in his third season at USC. Purdue is 1-10, but coach Ryan Walters is only in his second season. Maryland's Mike Locksley has been there six years and his Terrapins are 4-7, but this was his first real step backward after guiding the team to three straight bowl wins. Cignetti has shown it is possible for a coaching change to push a previously moribund program to some impressive heights in a short amount of time — but the improvement has been more incremental at Michigan State following Jonathan Smith's arrival. Sherrone Moore wasn't a completely unknown commodity at Michigan after he won some massive games in place of a suspended Jim Harbaugh last year. But in his first season completely at the helm, the Wolverines have declined significantly following their national title a season ago. Youth movement The Big Ten is home to one of the most dynamic freshmen in the country in Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith. He has 52 catches for 899 yards and nine touchdowns. Highly touted quarterback Dylan Raiola has teamed up with fellow freshman Jacory Barney (49 catches) to lead Nebraska to bowl eligibility. Recruiting watch Ohio State is on track to land the Big Ten's top class, according to 247 Sports, but the big news recently was quarterback Bryce Underwood flipping from LSU to Michigan. If the Wolverines do in fact keep Underwood in his home state, that would be a big development for Moore. This is Carson City: Talents builds its own communityGreat politicians seem to have two main things in common: they pick the right time to be born and they pick the right time to leave office. Everything in between will be recast in their favour if they only get these two things right. Former German chancellor Angela Merkel recently released her memoir . She, without a doubt, picked the right time to be born. She was 35 when the Berlin Wall fell, creating a cause – an East German voice and self-determination in reunifying with the West – that impelled her into politics. She was undeniably smart, but also the right age and the right symbolic vehicle to catch chancellor Helmut Kohl’s eye and become his protegee. In just under 15 years, she became chancellor. If she’d left after one term – two at most – her greatness would never have been questioned. But after that, her legacy as a crucial advocate for East Germans in the process of unification and her historic ascent was overwritten by a series of decisions that have turned out to be disastrous for Germany, economically and geostrategically. A shadow has fallen over Anthony Albanese’s prime ministership in 2024. Credit: Alex Ellinghausen US presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton could also be said to have picked the right time to be born and, thanks to term limits in the US, also the right time to leave office. Reagan performed a necessary service in deregulating a sclerotic US economy, mired in stagflation, while presiding over the end of the Cold War. Clinton presided over a peaceful age of free trade and international co-operation. While neither was a flawless leader and the numerous mistakes they made can easily be identified, they avoided leading their nations into catastrophe. Anthony Albanese also picked the right time to be born: at the beginning of the ’60s, as the fruits of a social revolution against the rigid morality of the war generation were ripe and not yet spoiled. He was a beneficiary of the blossoming of the self-actualisation century, in which the chains of the traditional family were being rejected, to be replaced by a paternal social welfare state. As the child of a single mother, his timing was especially fortuitous; he and his mother were poor, but in highly relative terms historically. They lived in government-owned housing and his mother was entitled to (and received) a disability pension, as she was unable to work. His own university degree – nominally in political economy, mainly in ruthless campus politics – was free (to him, but of course not the taxpayer). Loading Albanese was, as it were, born into a cause: to call for more of this, which made him possible: more social solidarity delivered by the state to replace the sticky ties of family and community obligation that had been found to be unreasonably oppressive by his generation and some in the one before it. Though it wasn’t visible at the time – transformations of this kind are mostly visible only with the benefit of hindsight – Albanese was in on the ground floor of the transformation of Labor from the party of the worker to the party of the left-liberal, the party of welfare. Operating the politics of this movement, Albanese gained the respect of his colleagues and parts of the public. In retrospect, his ideal moment to leave, with this legacy at its zenith, might have been the day in 2013 when he fronted cameras to lament the self-harm playing out within the Labor Party during yet another spill of the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd era. Had he left then, he would have gone out channelling the disgust of Australians at the shenanigans of self-absorbed politicians, an avatar and hero of the people. Or maybe he could even have drawn it out a little longer and left a few years later, at the height of his “everyman” identity (according to The Daily Telegraph , which campaigned to “Save our Albo” in the face of a challenge to his seat from a group of further-left candidates).Boat explosion at Florida marina leaves 1 dead, 5 injured

Falcons drafting Penix no longer a head-scratcher
RADNOR — Having landed his dream job once, Eric Roedl wasn’t sure at first what to make of the chance to do it again. It would’ve taken a lot to get the Deputy Athletic Director at the University of Oregon to leave Eugene, where he’s spent 13 years. The chance to lead not just any athletic department but that of his alma mater was sufficient to bring him back to the Main Line. Roedl was introduced Tuesday as Villanova’s Vice President and Director of Athletics. He replaces Mark Jackson, who was hired in the fall to become the AD at Northwestern. The move brings Roedl home. He played tennis at Villanova, graduating in 1997. His wife Nicole is a 1998 graduate of Villanova. Roedl spent eight years in athletic administration at Temple, then a stint at William & Mary before venturing west to a power conference behemoth in Oregon. While Villanova President Rev. Peter M. Donohue joked at Tuesday’s press conference that he hoped Roedl could bring a slice of the Ducks’ massive budget East with him, Roedl will carry some tangible aspects managing such a big organization to the mission-driven challenge at Villanova. “My big takeaways from Oregon are a commitment to building a championship culture in everything we do, very high standards, full-fledged commitment to holistic student-athlete development, always trying to be out in front when it comes to NCAA deregulation and the things that we can do to provide support for our student-athletes, and just creating a great environment for our student-athletes and our staff,” Roedl said. “People talk about resources and they talk about money, but to me, what really is the difference maker in building successful programs – and I know you know this here at Villanova – it’s about the people and how you operate in the culture.” Both Donohue and Roedl acknowledged several times the changing landscape of college athletics. Athletes are able to earn money for their name, image and likeness, and the House settlement requires colleges to share revenue with athletes. The pressure of those changes will exert much different responses at Roedl’s former employer, a public land-grant institution backed by the deep pockets of Nike’s founder, than at a small, private, Augustinian university. Roedl highlighted those differences in asserting how his approach would meet those challenges. “We have an exciting and compelling vision for the future,” Roedl said in prepared remarks. “Villanova has a deep belief in the role and value of college athletics as a part of this community. Nothing brings people together like sports, and I think Nova Nation is a true testament to that. ... Our priorities will be focused on what’s in the best interest of this university and alignment with our Augustinian values, and certainly what is in the best interest of the health, well-being and success of our student-athletes.” Roedl talked around a question about the basketball program’s recent struggles, beyond a pledge to “continue to innovate and strategically invest” in the men’s and women’s programs. The Wildcats, who won national titles in 2016 and 2018 under Jay Wright, have failed to make the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons under Kyle Neptune. Roedl won’t formally take over until January, but he’ll be monitoring how the basketball season progresses, with on-court performance as one of several factors in determining Neptune’s fate. Roedl is transitioning from a program that enjoys a revenue-generating football program to a Football Championship Subdivision squad that is a much different economic model. But he extolled the virtues of that competitive format for Villanova, which begins the FCS playoffs on Saturday. “I think the FCS football model is terrific,” Roedl said. “I love the fact that you’re competing throughout the year, and you’re competing to get into the playoffs, and you can play your way through. The CFP finally came around to that type of a model. It took a while, but the financial model is different, and football means different things to different schools. “There’s a lot of benefit to having an FCS football program and all the things that it brings to your campus. The team represents this university really well. We bring in tremendous, talented student-athletes from all over the country to come in here and compete for Villanova, and that’s a program that I really look forward to supporting and being a part of.” Roedl played a sport in college that, like many Olympic sports, feels economically endangered at the collegiate level. He calls his student-athlete experience “transformational,” in both his career and his life. He used the term “broad-based excellence” on several occasions to illustrate a goal of elevating all of Villanova’s 24 varsity programs, in terms of on-field success and off-field sustainability. In lamenting that “college athletics has become a little bit more transactional,” Roedl is endeavoring to lead Villanova through a middle path. If recruiting talent becomes a bidding war against bigger and better resourced schools, they don’t necessarily have the capital to compete directly. So the name of the game is to provide something more than just what happens on the field, whether that’s academically or via the community. “To me, one of the things that’s most special about college athletics is all the opportunity that it provides to young people to dream and be a part of a university athletic program, and that’s something that we’re going to be fully committed to here at Villanova,” he said. “We’re going to work our tails off to go out and find the resources. It’s a new time, and there’s going to be more pressure on each of our programs to find ways to be sustainable, to continue to be able to provide those opportunities. There’s a lot of pressure on resources right now post-House settlement and we look forward to engaging in the communities around all of our sports to continue to have them be thriving and successful.”Penneys block heel boot €85 cheaper than designer rival has customers flocking
